SPECIFIC campaign aimed at assisting individuals described as lonely is needed in Co Clare according to local representatives.

On Friday, the adjourned November meeting of Clare County Council heard about how loneliness can affect individuals and society. A joint motion from councillors, Paul Murphy, Pat Hayes and Ann Norton asked the Minister for Health to implement the report of the Loneliness Taskforce. They said “the devastating impact the epidemic of loneliness has on our health, society and economy as a whole” must be recognised.

In January, British Prime Minister The-

resa May appointed Tracey Crouch as the Minister for Loneliness. The move was one of the main recommendations of a report into the subject by the Jo Cox Commission. Cox was a Labour MP who was murdered by a rightwing extremist in 2016 and had been a vocal campaigner on loneliness. The Commission pointed out that loneliness cost UK employers £2.5bn each year.

Groups at the highest risk of loneliness are members of the LGBT community, individuals living with dementia or cognitive impairment, those with a physical disability, mobility issues or intellectual disability, carers and individuals from ethnic minorities. According to Childline, loneliness is now one of the main reasons children cite for contacting their service. Research from Brigham Young University stated loneliness increases the risk of death by 26%.

No Shannon flight to France ‘disgrace’ PÁRAIC McMAHON

ITH Brexit looming, concern has been expressed with Shannon’s lack of air connectivity with the rest of Europe.

Shannon Airport currently has UK hub connectivity through London Heathrow, but following Britain’s exit from the European Union the airport will be without connectivity into an EU hub. Shannon Group has appealed to the Government to safeguard its connectivity within the continent.

Fine Gael’s John Crowe called on Shannon Group plc and the Department of Transport to secure a route from Shannon to France in advance of Brexit. “It is an absolute disgrace there is no flights from Shannon to France. Ten different parishes in Clare are twinned with parts of France.

In Sixmilebridge we had 50 people fly over last year, they had to go Dublin and travel by bus all the way down. With Brexit, France will be our nearest neighbours. We haven’t one flight from Shannon to any part of France, it is an absolute disgrace in this day and age, we need it for connectivity.

France is a very popular destination for Irish tourists, how can we expect to have growth when we haven’t flights to a country like France”, he said at the adjourned November meeting of Clare County Council.

Responding to a query from The Clare Echo, a spokesperson for Shannon Airport said they are well aware of the need

to strengthen their European connectivity.

“While European connectivity is currently serviced through the London Heathrow hub, the reality is that in a post Brexit situation, the West of Ireland will be without this critical EU connectivity. We are engaging with Government on specific asks for a connectivity funding programme to secure strategic routes.

“We are looking for the mechanism to be put in place to ensure connectivity to a key European hub is in place for the West of Ireland. In light of the challenges Ireland would face from Brexit, particularly a hard-Brexit, it is of paramount importance that we safeguard our European connectivity. The Government’s Project Ireland 2040 recognises the fact that strong regions are the bedrock of a strong national economy.

We believe that a strategic route development fund and regional tourism targets are essential and we would welcome Government’s and stakeholder support to see these asks implemented”.

Meanwhile, Norwegian Air is to reduce its amount of services from Shannon and Dublin in 2019.

Daily flights from Shannon to New York Stewart International Airport will cease on January 12. The service will resume at the rate of five times per week on March 31, the airline intends to maintain the route as a summer only service from 2019 on.

September was deemed a successful month for Shannon as it boasted growth of 16 percent in its traffic. However with a total 15,490 flying Shannon it ranked behind Cork’s 18,780 and Dublin’s 171,845.

€1.4m for Parnell Street regeneration STUART HOLLY

LARE County Council has been allocated €1,600,000 towards the Ennis Town Centre Public Realm Regeneration Project which will lead to rejuvenation of key town centre streetscapes.

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD and the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoin Murphy TD on Monday announced that Ennis is among the first successful applicants under the Government’s €2 billion Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, which is intended to drive regeneration and rejuvenation of strategic and underutilized areas within Ireland’s cities and large towns.

The funding allocated to the Ennis Town Centre Public Realm Regeneration project will cater for the delivery of two projects, namely Parnell Street and the Lanes and Bowways (€1,411,000), as well as Barrack Square and Old Barrack Street, O’Connell Street and High Street (€189,000).

Meanwhile, support has been committed under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund to the principle of the development of the Venue, a new civic centre for Shannon. The funding, the details of which will be confirmed in the coming weeks, enables further development of the proposal as a community development and cultural project.

The €1,600,000 announcement for Ennis has been welcomed by Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy, Mayor of Ennis Municipal District, “The planned upgrade of key town centre locations is a very welcome development. I believe that Clare County Council’s proposed plan will deliver a new a vibrant town centre that will benefit residents, business and visi-

tors for many years to come.”

Welcoming the announcement, Carmel Kirby, Director of Services with responsibility for Ennis Municipal District, said “Parnell Street has a significant level of vacant property and an increasing lack of retail activity. The proposal will address the urgent need to reinvigorate this principal shopping street. The Lanes and Bow-Ways represent the medieval stage of the town’s history. The revitalisation will allow them to contribute positively to the Town Centre public realm, reinforcing their heritage character, and enhancing the permeability between key streets through increased pedestrian activity.

“A feasibility study has been completed for public realm improvements to O’Connell Square and High Street, and Barrack Square and Old Barrack Street. The grant of €189,000 will enable Clare County Council to develop the design further and bring it to part 8 planning stage with full public consultation. The objective is to transform Barrack Square and Old Barrack Street into a ‘café quarter’ that would act as a destination within the heart of the town."

WORLD renowned fiddle player and Clare native, Martin Hayes has been awarded a honorary doctorate from NUIG. At the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) winter conferring, Hayes became a Honorary Doctor of Music at the third level institute. Dr. Clare O’Leary who is the first Irish woman to scale Mount Everest and reach the South Pole, Phelim Murphy who was secretary of the Galway County Board from 1982 to 2004 and Bernie O’Connor an All-Ireland winning selector with the Galway hurlers the '80s were also acknowledged.

For 56 year old Hayes, it is another of many wonderful accolades he has to his name. He is one of only three fiddle players to be named All-Ireland senior champion in two consecutive years (1981 and 1982). As a teenager, he joined the Tulla Céili Band of which his father PJ was a founding member.

His performances with The Gloaming and more recently The Martin Hayes Quartet have wowed audiences all over the world.

When the Fleadh returned to Ennis, the Maghera man was more than delighted to play alongside his regular sidekick Dennis Cahill to a packed glór. Martin’s mother Peggy, his wife Lina, sisters Anna Marie and Helen plus his brother Pat were present in Galway to witness the ceremony.

Lack of certainty on Moneypoint jobs PÁRAIC

EAR has been expressed that ESB could follow the example of Bord na Mona by announcing sudden job losses in the future at its Moneypoint power station.

At the end of October, Bord na Mona announced they were cutting 430 jobs as it moves away from peat harvesting by 2025 under its decarbonisation agenda and begins closing productive bogs.

Speaking at the adjourned November meeting of Clare County Council, Cllr Gabriel Keating asked for the local authority to “invite representatives from the ESB to brief members on the future of the Moneypoint Power Station in view of Ireland’s commitments on climate change and recent development at Bord na Mona”.

“They are a really important employer in West Clare, it is important that they come and meet us.

We generally hear about these things too late like Bord na Mona,” the Fine Gael councillor added.

staff were worried about their future. “There is talk on the ground and people are getting concerned, the fear is they might convert to gas which would reduce the amount of people working there. We need to find clarity on this”.

Council CEO, Pat Dowling assured elected officials that they are working on the issue. “We have been involved in detailed discussions with management and have met the station manager, we have offered any support to them. They are currently engaged in a strategic process for post 2025 era when they won’t be using fossil fuels. At the moment they’re engaged in a planning process, by middle of next year they will be in discussion to reveal

where the journey will take them.”

When contacted by The Clare Echo, a spokesperson for ESB outlined that as part of their Brighter Future strategy they are committed to reducing the carbon intensity of electricity they generate by over two-thirds by 2030.

“This involves the planned transition out of coal and other carbon fuels. ESB is developing a number of options for Moneypoint as part of the transition to a secure and affordable low carbon future."

Although the representative said they will assess different options for the future of the plant, no commitment was given to the 194 staff that their jobs will be safe.

Seven killed by domestic violence in Clare since '01 STUART HOLLY

INCE 2001, seven women have been killed in County Clare. Five of those women were killed by a partner or ex-partner.

Now CLAN (Clare Local Area Network on Violence Against Women), is marking this year’s 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women, by welcoming a change in legislation that makes Coercive Control an offence under the Domestic Violence Act 2018.

Events in Clare throughout the 16 Days (from November 25 to December 10, 2018) will remember those women, while also raising awareness about Domestic Abuse, support services and changes in legislation.

The Domestic Violence Act 2018 is to commence in January 2019, having been enacted by the President on May 8. Included in the act is the newly recognised offence of Coercive

Control.

Sergeant Catriona Holohan, Sergeant in Charge of Community Policing at Ennis Garda Station and Chairperson of CLAN said, “For years victims of abuse believed that they could not contact the Gardaí or different agencies or avail of support services as they did not have a bruise or physical injury that indicted abuse. Those of us working with people who have suffered domestic abuse know however that abuse is not just physical.

Coercive control is abuse and is in fact an element in every single incident of domestic abuse.”

“This new legislation will change the way that all agencies move forward in 2019. It finally gives a voice to women that felt their voice wasn’t valid before now,” she added.

Speaking at the launch of the 16 Days, Chief Superintendent John Kerin said, “As I prepare to retire from An Garda Siochana, I am delighted that the victim is central to this new legislation.

and specifically the offence of Coercive Control will provide an acknowledgment of the often silent suffering of both men and women living with domestic abuse.”

As part of the 16-day campaign, Clare Haven Services has organised a candle light walk in Ennis on the evening of December 10 to remember all the women who have died in Ireland through

violence. The walk will commence at Ennis Garda Station at 6.30pm on December 10 and proceed to Ennis Courthouse for the concluding ceremony. All are invited to take part in the candlelight walk.

Participants will also wear orange or an orange ribbon - the international colour for domestic abuse awareness.

Clare Leads the way for disabled ON MONDAY, December 3 the Clare Leader Forum invites you to join them in celebrating International Day of Disabled Persons 2018.

The theme of this year’s International Day of Disabled Persons focuses on empowering disabled people to ensure dignity and equality for all. The Clare Leader Forum embraces that theme and promises a fun-filled morning of solidarity for all on the 3rd of December from 11am to 1pm in glór Theatre.

The centrepiece of the morning will see a screening of a previously unseen documentary filmed in Clare 25 years ago, which captured the emergence of the Independent Living movement. Clare Leader Forum Chairperson Padraic Hayes explains the importance of this. “As a movement we are conscious of the perseverance shown by so many people who have dedicated their lives to improving ours. On the 3rd we come together to honour the work of the past and look to the future together with strength and commitment”.

Big Shannon jobs boost PÁRAIC McMAHON

B Schenker is to double its workforce in Shannon to 100 with a planned €10m investment in its operations.

In 2006, the German logistics firm acquired BAX Global which had been based in Shannon since 1981. Now the company’s site in Clare is to grow to 85,000 square feet, it is planned to construct a 45,000 sqft high bay controlled warehouse and 15,000 sqft of offices.

CEO of DB Schenker in the UK and Ireland, Ray Hennessy confirmed their big development plans at Shannon Chamber’s President Lunch on Thursday. He told The Clare Echo that strong growth over the last two years was central to the decision from Head Office in the past month to further commit to the region, while he stated they have grown year on

year for the last nine years.

Currently 50 people are employed by DB Schenker in Shannon, this is set to double.

“Some of the jobs will be warehousing based, many of them will be office based in process design, finance, account management, administration and operations, some third level opportunities, some warehousing and in some cases truck driving opportunities,” Hennessy said.

They are hopeful the new buildings will be ready for use by 2020. “We’ve got to start appointing project managers then doing building design, planning permission, selecting a construction company, that work has just started this week, we’ve had some internal meetings on that. Our goal is to have the new building open for business before the end of 2020”.

Ray has been in his role for two years and the Clareman is proud that this announcement will staple DB Schenker’s future in the Mid West.

A new song released by Ennistymon musician Susie Q is being praised for delivering a powerful message of hope.

Susie Q, also known as Susan Quirke originally hails from Limerick but recently moved to Clare. She has connections to the county as her grandmother Mary 'Baby' O'Shea was from Kilnamona, her sister Caitriona and her family live in Miltown Malbay, while her summers were spent with her family at Lahinch. "County Clare is one of the most special places on earth.

It has a certain magic to it and it is no accident that artists and musicians flock here for inspiration," she says.

"Sometimes we need to just hold on when we feel like giving up" the singer, songwriter said of her new track, ‘Hold On’.

‘Hold On’ was written in Spanish Point, Quirke is also a meditation teacher and has worked in the area of mental health for several years. She says this work has given her huge insights into many of the issues faced by people, something that has inspired much of her songs.

I’ve lived in Ennis all my life, my career has been based in the MidWest region all that time.

"For me I’ve from this region, my family has grown up here and I’m really happy that this investment cements Schenker for generations to come because it’s an asset we own, not just leased and it’s a commitment to the Mid West region for the long term, it’s a very positive statement of confidence of us as a team”.

With over 320 employees in the country, DB Schenker in recent years upgraded their offices in Cork and Dublin, Ray is quite pleased to see Shannon is now following suit. “Our business is very strong in Ireland, our customer base is some of the largest multinational companies in the country and we perform well within the organisation and that’s demonstrated by their confidence in giving us this latest sum of money”.

€1m for North Clare project CLARE County Council has welcomed the allocation of €1,023,300 towards the development of a Multi-Service Innovation Centre in the heart of Ennistymon.

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD and the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD announced the first successful applicants under the Government’s €1 billion Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, which aims to breathe new life into Ireland’s smaller towns and villages.

The Ennistymon project involves the conversion of an existing building on Parliament Street in Ennistymon into a Multi-Service Innovation Centre which will comprise an Digital Hub with business broadband, a family resource centre and community amenities.

Cllr Michael Begley, Mayor of Clare, said, "I welcome that Clare has benefited in the initial tranche of funding under this scheme and I look forward to Clare featuring in the next announcement about funded projects in early 2019."

Pat Dowling, Chief Executive of Clare County Council, said the development of a Multi-Service Innovation Centre in Ennistymon is a key target under the Clare Rural Development Strategy, which was launched in late 2017.

"This new centre project is going to have a significant, positive economic impact for the town of Ennistymon and wider North Clare area."

HE world's top golfers are being lined up to visit Clare next year for The Irish Open.

Paul McGinley who is hosting the European Tour event was the keynote speaker at Shannon Chamber’s Winter Lunch in Dromoland Castle last week. A video highlighting the beauty of the South West, the proximity to Shannon Airport and five star hotels was shown to those in attendance - the same clip has been sent to golfers all around the world encouraging their

participation.

He explained why the video was produced. “It’s basically to showcase what Lahinch will be like and how good the golf course is... but I also want to create that festival spirit. We all know how great the town of Lahinch is with the pubs and restaurants and the craic with everything that goes on there and I think that’s a big part of the success that we’re trying to build, as much as the golf is important”.

Golfers such as Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson have been contacted by McGinley. “I’m in touch with everybody, the top 50 in

the world... whether they come or not is another question but I’m certainly pushing the boat out to try and get as much engagement as I can from all kinds of players. Why wouldn’t we be in touch with Tiger Woods, obviously it’s a long shot, he doesn’t come over to Europe very often but why not ask the question."

Speaking to The Clare Echo, the Dubliner revealed he is confident confirmed participants will be announced before the year is out. Ireland’s highest ranked golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy seemed to suggest in recent weeks he would not be travelling to Lahinch as he focuses on winning a Grand Slam but

the 51-year old is still optimistic Rory will be there, saying we'll "get more clarity" once Rory's bid to win the Masters is complete, which would make him one of a select few to win every major.

“It’s always a blow if Rory McIlroy doesn’t play, he’s one of the super stars of the game, he’s been front and central to the Irish Open over the last four or five years, he’s a huge draw and we’d love to have him. At the same time I’m not going to put any pressure on him, his focus at this moment in time rightly so is trying to win the Masters and ..we’ll have a little bit more clarity after he plays the Masters."

YAN arrived into a musical family in 1992. It soon became apparent that his love and panache for music was equaled with acting also.

So its no surprise that when he turned 8 years of age Ryan landed the role to play the character Mark Halpin in RTE’s long running TV soap Fair City, a role in which he claimed for almost a decade.

Having spent his teen years on the Irish screens, it was when he turned 17 that musicality became a priority and he left the hit TV soap to begin a career in music. While studying at renowned Music College BIMM Dublin as a songwriter in 2012, Ryan began honing in his songwriting skillset. He went on to compete in TV shows such as The Voice of Ireland, Britain’s Got Talent & The Hit. During this time, Ryan’s self-penned song ‘No Name’ accumulated over 45 million hits on YouTube.

He was then signed to Sony RCA in the UK, where he worked on his debut EP that reached No.1 in Ireland for 2 consecutive months.

As well as writing and working for different publishing companies and studios, O’Shaughnessy has toured Ireland, the UK, USA and Canada.

F YOU think a pension plan is something you start and then forget about until you retire, then think again. Although a pension is indeed a long-term plan, that does not mean that there is nothing you should be doing about it until you retire. In fact, a pension plan is one financial product which can really benefit from some careful attention during your working years.

The first thing you should do is review your pension plan to make sure that it is still capable of delivering an income in retirement that meets your expectations.

Markets have boomed over the last ten years since the crash. Will they continue in this fashion over the next five years? Is the fund that you are invested in currently best suited to your needs? These are questions that should be considered in conjunction with your financial advisor.

When you begin your career, your retirement will look like a long way away and your attentions will be on advancing your career. However, as you get older it is only natural that your ambitions for retirement will come under closer scrutiny.

You might want to retire early to focus on family, an interest or hobby. Equally, you may be enjoying the challenges of working life more than you expected to or have a financial goal in mind and therefore want to work for a few years longer than planned.

Choices and decisions such as these are very much dependent on your pension plan and the contributions you make to it, and for this reason they should be regularly reviewed. Will your contributions still deliver the lump sum and regular income you expect when you retire?

Should you be contributing more to make up for any fund under-performance or the effects of inflation? Could you afford to contribute more now and be able to retire earlier? Could you be making more of the generous tax reliefs associated with pension contributions?

Another thing to consider when reviewing your pension plan is the changes that have taken place in pension legislation. Broadly speaking, you now have more of a say in how the money in your pension pot is invested. When you retire you can take up to 25% of your fund as a lump sum. With the rest you can purchase an Annuity from which you then draw an income until you die or, subject to conditions, invest your money in an Approved Retirement Fund (ARF) or Approved Minimum Retirement Fund (AMRF). An ARF is an investment fund which is under your control and from which you can make withdrawals. Capital invested in an AMRF, on the other hand, will deliver an annual return but you have no access to the capital until you reach 75.

So, as you can see, ‘leaving well enough alone’ is not necessarily the best plan when it comes to your pension. Which is why it’s a very good idea to speak to a financial adviser about your retirement plans. They’re fully qualified to help you find out whether your pension plan is in a position to realise your retirement ambitions and guide you on the steps you can take to improve your retirement prospects.

ITH Christmas approaching, it’s easy to get caught up in all that ‘needs’ to be done - it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the stress and anxiety rife at this time of year.

With that in mind, it’s important to take some time to focus on personal wellbeing and mental health over the weeks ahead. To help with that, Elevate, a non-profit organisation promoting wellness in young people, and Clare musician Seán O’Malley have come together to create an event called ‘Mind Yourself ’, focused specifically on wellness and wellbeing, which takes place this December.

The event came together when Miltown Malbay based singer-songwriter Seán O’Malley approached Elevate founder John Burke about launching his latest single in aid of Elevate.

Seán says: “I wanted to do something for Elevate through the launch of my new song The Evangelist. The content of the single is very much focused on the impact anxiety can have on a per-

son, how negative thoughts can come to you out of nowhere in the middle of the night, and how your mind can blow them out of proportion. John [Burke] and I had a chat about incorporating a performance of the song and the launch of the single into a bigger night, providing talks on promoting wellbeing from some amazing speakers, in a relaxed setting and the event was created from there!”

‘Mind Yourself ’ takes place from 7.30pm on Wednesday December 5th in The Armada Hotel Spanish Point.

The free event will feature a series of talks on topics including how things like sport, music and mindfulness techniques can have a really positive impact on mental health. The amazing line-up of speakers includes Clare sports star Podge Collins (inset), singer-songwriter Luka Bloom and the first Clare man to scale Everest, John Burke. The night will be MC’d by Seán O’Malley and will include a performance of his new single, with all proceeds going to support Elevate. Tickets are free but must be prebooked via Eventbrite at mindyourselfclare.eventbrite.ie.

Clare wins Co Council of year

CHAMBERS Ireland has named Clare County Council Local Authority of the Year 2018 at its 15th annual Excellence in Local Government Awards.

The awards which were presented at a ceremony in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, Dublin last Thursday night in association with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, aim to acknowledge and encourage best practice and constructive initiatives by local authorities.

Clare County Council was also named overall winner in three award categories having been nominated for a record 11 out of 16 categories on the night.

The winning Council initiatives were Friars Walk Coach Park Ennis (Outstanding initiative through the Municipal Districts), Community Mobilisation Unit: Rural & Community Development Officer (Best Practice in Citizen Engagement) and The Burren & Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark (Sustainable Environment).

Cllr Michael Begley, Mayor of Clare, said, “Being named Local Authority of the Year is a well-earned acknowledgement of the hard work of all staff of Clare County Council and is reflective of energy and initiative being shown by management across the organisation with the support of all 28 Elected Members.”

ARE YOU A POTATOE, EGG OR COFFEE BEAN?

I

SOMETIMES as the nights get darker ealrier feel a bit down or start looking at my life and start asking a few questions. When people experience hard times, it can sometimes seem that they’re never going to end. The dictionary defines adversity as “a serious or continued difficulty.” Although some people going through adversity are more likely to define it as hell. It is the long drawn-out nature of adversity, rather than brief spells of misfortune, that can crush the human spirit and cause related illnesses such as stress, anxiety and depression.

However, it’s also at such times that people can discover their inner resilience and optimism, while having strong faith that the difficult times will come to an end. Adversity visits us all from time to time, some more than others and in many different ways. It can come disguised as marriage trouble, sickness, financial calamity and debts, hardship from personal attacks, or even difficulty in the workplace or even the lost of one’s job, or death of a loved one. Adversity is no respecter of persons.

All of us will face it at sometime or other.

The question is how we will respond to it. Try if you can muster up the energy to “Encourage Yourself ”!! For me through my prayer life encouragement is one of my most powerful antidote’s against adversity.

Have you ever heard a car engine knock or splutter because it was low on oil? Then after oil was added the engine hummed along smoothly? Our lives are the same.

Many times we get so busy with the cares and worries of this world and just getting by, that we run low on oil and get knocked and spluttered around. We stop putting the encouragement, prayers, care and love into our hearts and souls and that only lends to putting our lives in jeopardy. Learning how to overcome adversity should be always a major part of our character that we all must continually try to develop. Even though these situations can be devastating, life still goes on and we must do what is necessary to get through these difficult circumstances. As usual a story may help to explain.

Potatoes, Eggs and Coffee

“Once upon a time, a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it through.

She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes, he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He

then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.

Turning to her, he asked, “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied. “Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it.

After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. It’s rich aroma brought a smile to her face. “Father, what does this mean?” she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs, and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity, the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard and unrelenting, but in boiling water it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. “Which are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

Don’t Throw in the Towel!!

I don’t know about you but there have been times in my life where I just wanted to throw in the towel. I am sure we have all been down on our luck at some point. Personally, I have had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows through my journey through life so far. I have been depressed, discouraged, hurt, sad, worried, anxious and even terrified. I have even done some things I am sure no one could be proud of. But let’s make one thing clear, Life is a continuous succession of both small and large problems or joyful and sorrowful mysteries as i would like to call them.

They never end.

“God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as

Thought for the week

As your thought for the week, always remember that one of your main jobs in life is to become an expert in dealing with adversity, to triumph over difficulty, to rise above the challenges of day-to-day life. Keep your thoughts on where you’re going, not on where you’ve been. Keep your eyes on your goals, and keep your chin tilted upward towards the heavens.

Resolve in advance that you will meet and overcome every difficulty, and then, no matter what happens, don’t give up until you do.

Remember In life, things happen around us and things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us. Sometimes when we’re heartbroken, our heart is broken open and we’re able to give and receive more love. As long as we choose not to shut down around the pain but stay with the feelings and trust that we can survive them, heartbreak can be an opportunity to experience more love for ourselves, for a sick loved one or really for anyone in our lives. “God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. T WAS one of those sublime motoring Clearly, those ranks and lines of SUVs and 4x4, waiting (im)patiently outside the gates of the nation’s schools, swimming pools, football pitches, and rugby clubs, speak of a need felt keenly in the heart of the Irish motorist. A need that can only be sated by a sensation of ruggednes, of living the outdoors-y life, of being ever prepared for some freakish weather event that would leave an ordinary car stranded. That’s the only thing I can think of that explains our SUV obsession. By any rational reckoning, it’s utter rubbish — after all, most SUVs are nothing more than normal hatchback with around an extra inch of suspension travel, and are no better at traversing floods or the steppes of some far-off land than the neighbour’s Golf. If its ruggedness you’re after, then with all due respect, you’re not going to find it in a Qashqai.

You will find it in a Volkswagen Amarok. Now, while it’s hardly at this point in time the politic thing to be American in your thinking (I have, for example, no red baseball caps in my wardrobe) I have always admired American cars. I’ve driven, and loved, Cadillacs. Some day I fully intend to own an ex-police Crown Victoria. And I really want a Mustang.

And I like pickups. Well, if what you want is something rugged and utilitarian, why wouldn’t you? It’s why I’ve been so delighted at the recent influx of double-cab, one-tonne pickups into the Irish

market. The likes of the Nissan Navara, the Ford Ranger, the Toyota Hilux, the Mitsubishi L200, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class — they’re all, for me, dripping with rugged coolness. And the Amarok is the undisputed king of them all.

How so? Well, for a start, just look at it. Pickups are supposed to be just simple, blocky things but the Amarok really does seem to have some style about it.

I guess that’s helped by the matte-grey paint finish of our test car, and the bulky empennage of the ‘Aventura’ bodykit that really fleshes out the shape. It’s easy to dress-down a pickup, to make it plain, white, and built solely for work, not aesthetic pleasure (and there’s a certain coolness to that, too) but I love the way the Amarok looks when you tart it up a touch.

That continues inside, where there are huge, and hugely comfortable, leather seats and a neatly-laid out dashboard. Yes, the main dials, the column stalks, and the relatively small touchscreen are all very clearly lifted from old Golfs and Skodas, but they all work well and look good enough.

There’s always a sense, with pickups, that their interiors are stuffed with things considered not good enough anymore for mainstream cars, but the Amarok seems to sidestep that — the cabin looks good, feels good, is comfortable even for longer journeys, and there’s more space in the back seats than you’ll find in most rivals.

There’s even enough width for a child safety seat in the middle of the back seat, so

yes — this really is a practical family car.

Besides, you know how you’re always complaining that your kids have to carry a tonne of stuff around with them whenever they travel? Well, now you can actually carry that tonne — the Amarok’s load-bed can handle that much cargo weight. True, some kind of cover would be helpful (and many such are available) to keep the rain off whatever it is you’re carrying, and true too that smaller items such as shopping, luggage, and actual kitchen sinks slide around back there unless you’re tying them down, but you really can keep packing stuff in.

You can haul it at speed, too. The Amarok now comes with a 3.0-litre TDI V6 diesel engine, which replaces the old 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-banger. Almost unbelievably, this engine is available in a 258hp version, but our test car came with the lower power 224hp version of the same engine. Which seems to make no difference at all, as this still seems indecently quick for a pickup. There’s a touch of turbo lag low down, but when the engine comes on song, and the eightspeed automatic gearbox picks the right cog, the Amarok V6 flings itself at the horizon with unexpected vehemence.

It handles too, up to a point. Clearly something that weighs this much, and is this tall, is not going to be giving any Lotus Esprit drivers a hard time, but the Amarok swings itself around corners with surprising ease, and really you only feel the weight if you’re not quite pay-

ing attention and have to brake sharply.

Then the nose dips deeply and the Amarok takes just a little longer to stop than you might expect or hope. Aside from that, it’s actually pretty decent to drive.

It’s not cheap, though. Even a pretty basic Amarok costs €47,000 to put on the road, and this range-topping Aventura will need a hefty €62,605 to park on your driveway. That’s a significant amount for what amounts to a posh commercial vehicle, and it puts it within shouting distance of the cost of the new Touareg — which is a whole other ballgame.

I still like the Amarok, expensive and all as it is. It’s the real deal — rugged, tough, endlessly capable, yet with the sort of saloon car comforts that make it an effortless everyday companion. Get one of these and you’ll be the king, or queen, of the school run.

TOYOTA REVEALS ALL-IMPORTANT NEW COROLLA SALOON

BIG-SELLING COROLLA WILL, FINALLY, COME AS A HYBRID

OYOTA is finally adding hybrid power to its biggest-selling model.

While everyone waits with baited Brexit breath to see what sort of shape the Irish car market will take in 2019, most manufacturers are at least playing the saintly card and offering as many diesel alternatives as possible. None more so than Toyota, which has been peppering us with hybrid headlines, including those for the new Camry, the new RAV4, and the new Corolla hatchback, in recent weeks.

Toyota’s big news this week, and following on from the reveals of the new RAV4, Camry, and Corolla hatchback and Touring Sports estate this year, is the new Corolla saloon. Revealed at the massive

Ghangzhou motor show in China, display models of the new four-door Corolla will arrive in Ireland in December, with first sales starting in February.

Clearly sharing much of its styling, and certainly sharing all of its chassis, with the

hatchback and estate versions, the Corolla saloon is being a little more conservative in its powertrain choice, possibly reflecting the more traditional natures of its buyers.

The saloon misses out on the 2.0-litre 180hp hybrid that you’ll find in the hatchback, and

instead uses the tried and trusted 1.8-litre version, with 122hp. Under the new WLTP test, claimed emissions are 98g/km, with 4.8-litres per 100km fuel economy.

The saloon borrows the estate’s long 2.7-metre wheelbase, so rear legroom should be pretty impressive, and there’s an eight-inch touchscreen to keep those in the front happy. Safety kit is good too, with the expected autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. New on the safety front is a system called Lane Trace Assist (LTA), which is like a more subtle version of lane departure steering, and works with the active cruise control to help the driver keep the car neatly in its lane.

Prices for the new Corolla saloon will start from €26,820 with PCP finance starting from €208 per month.

Community ENNIS CLARE PPN EVENT Clare Public Participation Network is holding a county meeting and a Christmas get-together for its members and the general public on December 6th @7 pm in Glor Theatre, Ennis.

This meeting is open to all and will include an introduction to the purpose and work of the network

by Sarah Clancy the PPN’s Coordinator. It will also serve as Clare PPN’s second plenary meeting of the year which means that all member groups are invited to attend and have their say on the decisions and plans for the year ahead.

The Public Participation Network in Clare has had a very successful year in 2018 with its membership increasing and many successful training, policy and awareness events under its belt. 2019 will be a key year for the organisation which has representatives on a host of committees and boards in County Clare. Following the local government elections due in May 2019, Clare PPN will be organising its own elections of community representatives to these boards and committees. They are calling on all of those involved in their communities to get involved with the PPN and have their voices heard. This meeting is the perfect chance to learn about the work Clare PPN has been doing and how community group members can influence its future work.

NORTH/WEST CLARE HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Kilrush and District Historical Society’s November lecture will be given in the Teach Ceoil at 8 p.m. on Tuesday 27 November by Tom Donovan, who will present the story of the Colleen Bawn.

The bicentenary of the murder of Ellen Hanley, the teenage bride of John Scanlan, occurs in 2019.

Their marriage that summer may have taken place in Kilrush, but within a few months her body was washed ashore at Moneypoint and buried in Burrane.

The victim, now known to story, drama and opera as the Colleen Bawn, was not quite sixteen years of age. This lecture will give an account of what became one of the most well remembered crimes of that period.

KDHS lectures are free to members, EUR5 for non-members.

New members are welcome. The annual membership fee (July-June) is EUR20.

This will be the last lecture of 2018. Our next event is the annual Christmas Social on Saturday 29 December, of which more details will follow.

Miltown style can’t match Crokes Martin Daly GAA ANALYSIS

URIST, footballing footballers on top of their game are hard to beat - and last Sunday was an example of chalk and cheese in terms of style. That’s said with all due respect because Miltwon Malbay are by far the best team in the county of Clare. But they met their inevitable demise in the form of Dr Crokes of Killarney on Sunday.

Prior to the county final, I wrote in this column about Miltown’s supreme ability to play a handpassing game, working it up from defence to create scoring opportunities. Miltown have the speed, fitness and intensity required and they won the County championship with ease using it. They went on to beat The Nire down in Waterford putting up a score of 2-11 and followed it up with another strong scoring performance against Crokes, putting 2-09 past the Kerrymen. But they conceded 1-21, and the style that saw them flying in Clare actually played a part in their demise.

In Clare, when play broke down, more often than not Mil-

town had time to regroup as the opposition were trying to handpass back up the field - not on this occassion. Crokes use the footpass like it’s second nature. Three kicks later from full-back and it’s over the bar. The movement of the ball by foot was far too much for the West Clare men.

Take nothing away from Miltown - this was a year when they rose and fulfilled their potential. The way they won the championship was second to none and they performed well in Munster, actually competing man for man with Crokes after a terrible start which saw them down by 1-06 to no score against a side with plans to win an All-Ireland. They fought to the end with a late Darragh McDonagh goal. You could see after the game that this defeat hurt Miltown and they had ambitions to beat Crokes, but the reality is the Killarney outfit are going on a purple patch and if the two sides were to meet again next year, you would predict a similar outcome. The plain Crokes live on - where you can ping the ball over from 40 yards with both feet - is a level unique to Kerry teams.

To compete with that, firstly Miltown would have to produce another three Eoin Clearys. Secondly, unless the style of play changes across the board in Clare or a team decides to change it, when you do meet a Kerry team on top form who live with the foot and not the hand, you won’t be able to compete with them. And that’s not something that can be done overnight.

Unfortunately many club teams, even county teams, don’t have the level of player so that they can just switch gameplan. A gameplan has to be worked on consistently over a long period of time until people get it right and it can be done at their ease without even thinking about it. Miltown,

The importance of correct aligment...

I

HAVE discussed the importance of alignment in one of my previous articles, however even since that article I’m further convinced the main reason for a golfers inconsistency on the golf course is in fact mainly down to poor alignment.

I recently played nine holes where I used alignment sticks for every shot and immediately I saw a noticeable improvement on the consistent direction of my ball flight. Humans generally find it easier to align themselves when they are forward facing a target rather than having to face 90° away from your target like you have to do in golf. The setup for golf isn’t natural for us therefore the only way to find a consistent setup is to practice it using alignment sticks.

If you have these sticks next time your out playing place one of them between you and the ball to check out your current setup aim. You might be surprised how poor your own alignment is and realise that it can be improved.

When I discuss alignment I’m talking about two key areas; (1) Clubface aim and (2) Alignment of your feet and shoulders.

It isn’t easy to aim a clubface at a target that is hundreds of yards away, so a simple trick I use is to stand behind the ball and I choose a piece of

ground just in front of my ball that is in line with my target. Then I aim my clubface at this point on the ground before I aim my feet and shoulders. Always remember the golf ball always starts where your clubface is aiming therefore it’s important to have your clubface aiming correctly at your target as you address the ball. This is one of the first tips I received from a golf professional as a kid and I can honestly say it’s the best tip I’ve ever received.

In practice at the driving range I often place a 1 cent coin about 4-6 inches in front of my ball in line with my target and I hit every shot in that practice session with the coin there, to help me to improve my clubface alignment.

The second alignment you need to address is your shoulders and feet. In particular your shoulder alignment because the path of your golf club follows your shoulder alignment not your feet. In fact most golfers don’t aim their feet and shoulders in the same direction - their shoulders are either open or closed in relation to their feet.

To check your own alignment, set up to hit a golf shot and place one alignment stick at the toes of your feet and hold the second across your shoulders and see where your shoulders are aiming in relation to your feet. Once you begin to understand where your shoulders are aiming you can then clearly see if you need to change or improve their alignment.

Alignment sticks are inexpensive and are the fastest way to improve any aiming issues you may have on the course.

I highly recommend every golfer should have them in their bag and I guarantee if you use them you will see a big improvement in your game and those destructive golf shots will eventually vanish from your golf game.

The majority of golfers I see on the golf course suffer with poor alignment and they will never realise it unless they work on it using alignment sticks.

Improve and begin to understand your alignment this winter and make 2019 your most enjoyable golfing season to date.

Photo by Martin Connolly although they’ll have to work just as hard for it as they did this year, are good enough to win the 2019 championship but if they risk fiddling with their style it could be a different story so there’s an element of catch 22.

The beauty for Miltown is that they’re in a position now where they can sustain their momentum. They have youth on their side, they have plenty of football and all reports from their camp is that the work ethic is excellent. And until then, they can deservedly sit back and reflect on a brilliant year.
