LAHINCH WATER QUALITY RAISES RED FLAGS PÁRAIC McMAHON

UTURE housing developments should not proceed in Lahinch unless wastewater infrastructure is improved, local residents and business persons have said. Clare County Council has sought further information on plans for a proposed 28 house development on the Station Rd while the green light was granted for 26 houses on School Rd with an application lodged last week for a separate eight house development also on School Rd.
In submissions to the local authority, Lahinch pharmacist Sasha Welleans cautioned that water capacity was already at capacity. “During holiday periods, there is an increase incidence of gastrointestinal complaints that present in the pharmacy”. Occasional instances of swimmers developing e-coli as a result of swimming in Lahinch have occurred in recent years. In 2019, the Environmental Protection Agency flagged that raw untreated sewage was being released into the sea at Lahinch. Do not swim notices have been issued at the location following extended periods of heavy rainfall in recent years, the latest occurrence being in August of last year. Full Story pg 4
