Ennis town lights up for Christmas

C

HRISTMAS in Ennis is set to be bigger than ever before with the arrival of a number of festive initiatives including the all-new Christmas Village.

The festive season is upon us and Clare County Council and Ennis Chamber have spared no expenses to make sure that local shoppers have the best family experience available to them at the merriest time of the year.

The Christmas lights will be switched on tomorrow (Friday, November 29) by Mayor of Ennis Johnny Flynn with Santa Claus expected to make an appearance, while ‘Music in the Market’ will be held on Saturday from 2-6pm.

Perhaps among the most exciting developments this year, Ennis Christmas Village will arrive at Abbey Street Car Park from December 1315 to help revellers soak in the festive fun, where there will be Santa’s Grotto, a carousel amongst other surprises.

Still no GP in Newmarket

EWMARKET-on-Fergus will continue without a GP until at least early 2020 with concern growing in the parish due to the gradual decline in services and amenities.

A provisional agreement to replace Dr Colm Hackett between a GP and the HSE broke down days before the scheduled September date for the implementation of a new GP with little progress made in the interval despite an ongoing recruitment process. The closing date for applications is December 12.

On Tuesday, TD Dr Michael Harty (IND) questioned Minister for Health, Simon Harris on plans to address “the failure to fill” the position. As of November 1, there are 22 vacant General Medical Services, GMS, general practitioner posts nationwide, Harris confirmed. He stated that the HSE is “actively” recruiting to fill the vacancies referred to by the Deputy and that a locum or other appropriate arrangement has been put in place to maintain GP services in the communities in question.

Meanwhile, an “urgent community forum” has been called in Newmarket on Monday at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Items on the agenda include the GP post, Garda presence and a lack of basic services, amenities and facilities in the village. FIVE year Traveller Accommodation programme was recently adapted by elected members of Clare County Council following a vote that one councillor described as “completely pointless”.

Twelve councillors voted in favour of the programme with six casting votes against, eight were absent while two Fine Gael representatives abstained.

Findings from the 2016 Census say there are 30,987 Travellers in Ireland, 910 of which are in Clare amounting for one percent of the county’s population. Clare County Council carry out an annual count on the amount of residents, as of November 2018 there were 305 Traveller Households resident in Clare.

Detail on the accommodation of Traveller families was provided in the November 18 count. 89 are in Standard Local Authority Social Housing, 42 are sharing with relatives, 35 have come under HAP, 32 are in Traveller Group Homes, 29 are in privately owned units with 19 in RAS / Leasing, 12 are on unauthorised sites, 12 are in Serviced Halting

Sites, 6 are in Voluntary Housing with 4 in Emergency Accommodation.

According to the Council’s document on the Traveller Accommodation Programme, “The survey provides information on need but this need is not reflected in terms of social housing applicants” of which there were 23. It added, “Traveller households who have expressed interest for standard social housing will be considered in their area of preference”.

In the local authority’s draft on the programme, it stated there was a total of 59 units of traveller specific accommodation in Clare, it listed eight houses and three serviced bays as being vacant. “As the basis of the needs assessment is unreliable, this Council will continue to allocate properties as they become available in line with our scheme of letting properties”.

As part of the programme, the Council “will consider the development of a maximum of two additional halting site/group housing schemes/single instance housing to accommodate traveller families based on assessment of housing need”.

This programme was proposed at the October meeting of Clare County Council.

Cathaoirleach, Cllr Cathal Crowe (FF) cautioned that if councillors did not adopt the programme, the Council’s Executive would which lead to Cllr Roisin Garvey (GP) describing the vote as “completely pointless”.

LARE'S Friday for Future protesters scolded county councillors for 'not doing their homework on climate change'.

Seven months on from first addressing elected representatives of the county, a delegation from Friday's for Future Clare were invited to speak at the November sitting of the local authority. Here they gave a reminder of the measures they called on Clare County Council to introduce.

These included declaring a climate and biodiversity emergency, more renewable energy infrastructure, a bottle refund scheme, grants for zero waste, sufficient segregated cycling infrastructure, free school buses for rural and urban areas, making the centre of Ennis pedestrianised and rewilding Council owned land.

"We demanded immediate action in April, climate change has become more talk in daily news, it has been all talk and no action,"Kate Harty declared. "This is not our job, we should be in school learning about history or something". She acknowledged the Council has made changes since April but added, "The effects of climate change are visible in Co Clare, we're most at risk of flooding and stronger topical storms will reach us". Áine Dempsey outlined that FFF Clare

were "very disappointed" councillors did not back a motion in September to introduce a climate emergency. "We commend you on the new cycling infrastructure in Ennis, cycling is now more enjoyable than stressful.

We have done our homework, now is the time you did yours. If it is too late, there is no going back".

“Thank you for listening, we hope you will continue to listen to the science and most importantly act," Eleanor Dagnell-Wise concluded. Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) who proposed the climate emergency and for the delegation to come back to the Council Chamber was in agreement, "We do not see enough action".

Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) stated, "I would have to say being of the age I am I was brought up in West Clare I'd be of the opinion the generation of the 50s were more environmentally aware than the current generation, a lot of the same proposals were put forward back then 'reuse, reduce, recycle'," the Miltown Malbay native reflected. He praised the group for their ongoing work and felt "there is a hell of a lot Clare County Council can do". The Shannon MD Cathaoirleach disagreed with the views that hedgerows should remain untouched.

For Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) the presentation "has opened my eyes to things that are happening and may happen in the future". He believed the group's input "will make the world a better place to come in twenty, thirty and forty years time".

I Electronics have been granted planning permission for a major two-storey expansion of their Shannon headquarters which is expected to double its production facility.

On Wednesday morning, EI Electronics confirmed that Clare County Council had approved plans for the development which will consist of the demolition of an existing service area and carparking area to facilitate the construction of a two-storey extension to the current light-industrial manufacturing facility across a 2.1547ha site.

Other works include an additional ancillary office, R&D areas with a new entrance foyer to be constructed. The present car

park will be reconfigured to the south of the proposed building giving an additional 75 spaces while a new car park will be provide 44 spaces plus a set down area, secure bicycle parking and accessible spaces.

The development will also include the partial re-roofing of the existing facility to the northern corner of the campus among other works.

The Clare Echo reported in May of EI’s plans to undergo the major expansion.

It is yet to be confirmed how many extra jobs will be created as a result.

EI Electronics has been based in Shannon for the past fifty six years, its current workforce in the region of 750-800 makes it the largest employer in the Shannon Free Zone.

Construction is due to commence in early 2020, a spokesperson for the company confirmed.

SMOKY COAL BAN IN ENNIS, CLARECASTLE AND PARTS OF SOUTH-EAST CLARE Clare County Council would like to advise the public and fuel suppliers of the following: • The marketing, sale and distribution of bituminous or smoky coal such as ‘Polish coal’ has been banned in the greater Ennis area, Clarecastle and parts of South-East Clare in order to protect human health from the harmful emissions which result from the burning of bituminous coal high in sulphur.

• Any person or business marketing, selling or distributing bituminous or smoky coal for use within the greater Ennis area, Clarecastle and parts of South-East Clare covered by the ban is committing an offence.

Members of the public and fuel suppliers are encouraged to contact Clare County Council via the same contact details to report any suspected breaches of the regulations.

Inspections may be carried out by staff in the Environment Section to ensure compliance with the Air Pollution Act, 1987 (Marketing, Sale and Distribution of Fuels) (Amendment) Regulations 1998 to 2011.

• The public within the greater Ennis area, Clarecastle and parts of South-East Clare is advised to source only smokeless fuels from reputable suppliers for their solid fuel needs. The following are examples of smokeless fuels that are permitted:  Smokeless ‘Coal’, Blended or Unblended - containing some or all of manufactured ovoids, manufactured nuggets or anthracites.  Peat - loose turf and baled briquettes.  Wood - kindling, firewood logs, compressed wood logs, firestarter logs, etc.

LEVEN year old Clare boy Seán Healy from Cratloe has been sworn in as an Honorary Member of An Garda Síochána.

Assistant Commissioner Ann-Marie McMahon, who hails from Kilmurry McMahon, bestowed the honour upon the St John’s National School fifth class pupil at Shannon Garda Station recently when he was welcomed in as one of the organisation’s Little Blue Heroes.

A dual-player with Cratloe GAA, Seán has lined out for the club in gaelic football and hurling but admits to preferring the small ball having played in a number of underage competitions.

One day, Seán hopes to become a detective. Recently he paid a visit to Shannon Garda Station where he was met by Assistant Commissioner Ann Marie McMahon who was quite impressed with the young Clare man.

While there, he was given a tour of the cells, training rooms and met with the station party, he was also introduced to members of the Armed Response Unit and went for a ride along in an unmarked Garda car.

His interest in the Gardaí comes through the generations as his great great grandfather was one of the first members of An Garda Síochána.

His parents Catherine and Sean have helped make him and his two older sisters Maria and Aoife aware of the family’s pedigree within the Garda ranks.

Baby girl joy for Garrihy AOIBHÍN Garrihy and John Burke are this week celebrating the arrival of their second child on Monday afternoon.

Slightly earlier than expected, the baby girl arrived following ten hours of labour in Galway on Monday and followed a whirlwind 24 hours for the Clare couple.

“What a crazy 24 hours it’s been. One minute you’re painting your nails with notions of an awards night, the next you’re on the labour ward at 2am. The result? The ultimate reward, a perfect little sister for Hanorah, another beautiful Burke baby girl arrived today at 12:36pm and we are simply in love”, Aoibhín wrote on Instagram.

A popular columnist with The Clare Echo, Aoibhín gave birth to their first child, Hanorah in June of last year.

Owner of the Armada Hotel in Spanish Point, John is now outnumbered 3-1 by the women in the family home.

It caps off a busy few months for the Garrihy family following Ailbhe’s wedding which took place in Co Clare in October while both Doireann and Eugene completed a trip to Rwanda along with representatives of Bothar.

Mother Clare was also travelling earlier this month but to Abu Dhabi on a golfing trip.

Farmers: Govt will reap what they sow PÁRAIC McMAHON

SMALL group of Clare farmers were involved as one hundred tractors caused disruption across Dublin on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed was handed a letter on Wednesday morning in the lobby of his Department by five delegates from the group outlining their issues. The Clare Echo understands that these include, carbon tax, protecting family farms, barriers that are preventing the Beef Market Taskforce, reform of state agencies, neglect of rural Ireland and the dairy bull calf issue. The same factors led to the farmers decision to protest.

They have said if no progress is made by December 15 they will be back protesting on the streets of Dublin. However, a minority of farmers that were present in the capital insisted they would not leave until the price of beef is addressed and the injunctions lifted. Two Clare farmers currently have injunctions against them.

On Tuesday night, two tractors and a group of around 30 protesters blocked Oireachtas members and staff from leaving Leinster House for several hours. Dublin Bus advised of a numbers of diversions with Gardaí confirming a number of streets would remained closed to traffic until further notice.

Chairperson of the Clare Beef Plan, Joseph Woulfe told The Clare Echo, “This protest was made up of individual farmers

and people from the four corners of Ireland, it was agreed we would come and protest on a set route. And we did, but the Gardai turned on the agreement, blocked the roads, but clearly following orders from Government of the day”.

A confirmed Independent candidate in the 2020 General Election, Woulfe was adamant rural Ireland would not forget this Government. “TDs and Ministers and even Leo Varadkar will be coming to rural doors all over the country in a very short period, what the Government is doing to rural ways of life will not be forgotten. Shutting down of financial, health, social outlets and the promotion of emigration”. The Quilty farmer referred to a farming quote, “you reap the seeds you sow” when referring to the consequences of such decisions.

McInerney calls public agri meeting FIANNA Fáil General Election candidate Rita McInerney is hosting a public meeting on Monday to discuss the future of Clare’s agriculture.

McInerney said, "Farmers across Clare are facing an uncertain future as prices remain volatile and costs continue to rise. Beef farmers in particular have been finding it exceptionally difficult; steer prices remain precarious, and we are still waiting for all of the reforms agreed in the beef agreement to come about.

"It's been over three months since that beef sector deal was agreed by seven of the national farm organisations and Meat Industry Ireland, but to date the Minister for Agriculture has failed to get the taskforce up and running.

This is extremely disap-

pointing for farmers in Clare.”

"Not only are farmers struggling with low prices, the cost of insurance is going through the roof.

This puts a major strain on farming families and many are struggling to stay afloat.

"The agri sector is also in the midst of a transition towards a more environmentally friendly way of doing business.

Many farmers have been engaging for years in green agri-schemes and are now looking at other ways to adapt to minimise climate change. We need to end the false thinking that agri-development and climate action are in conflict in a 'zero-sum game',” she added.

The public meeting will be held on Monday, December 2 in the Temple Gate Hotel Ennis at 7.30pm.

The Saoirse Foundation is a registered non-profit charity dedicated to making positive life impacts for sick children.

The charity was founded by Tony and Mary Heffernan in 2010 after their daughter,

Saoirse, was diagnosed with Batten Disease – a rare and fatal neurological condition.

The performance this year sees Sally Fox as Elle Woods whose failed relationship leads her towards an educational journey full of new friendships and discoveries.

The students have been treading the boards for months to put on a performance that lives up to true ‘Comp’ standards.

The production is being supported by many dedicated people in the Shannon area and the school is delighted with all the local input into the musical.

Past pupils Aidan Fox, Karen Barrett and Laura Gough are working alongside a dedicated team of staff members to bring this musical to life.

LARE Echo columnist Ronan Scully is asking readers consider joining him on a Christmas Jumper Day in aid Self Help Africa.

Self Help Africa works with some of the poorest communities – providing families with the ability to produce more food, earn more from their farming activities – helping mothers and fathers to provide a better life for their children.

The cozy jumper day is due to take place in schools, companies, pubs, cafes and businesses across the country on Friday, December 13.

The main focus of 'Christmas Jumper Day for Africa' will be on encouraging children and people to come to school or work or play on the day wearing their favourite Chrstmas jumper and make a donation to the charity.

Ronan is encouraging people to make use of old jumpers and old coloured clothes or maybe even designing your own Christmas jumper to avoid extra expence on families this Christmas.

Participating schools, businesses, clubs and companies will be invited to submit their favourite photos from the day, which will be posted on the Self Help for Africa website.

DEAN Casey had a weekend to remember as he was crowned a National Cross Country Champion.

Casey was first home in the U18 National Cross Country race beating Antrim duo Adam Ferris and Matthew Lavery to the top spot. His Ennis Track clubmates, Mark Hanrahan, Matthew Power, John O’Donoghue and Jason O’Regan finished in 13th, 87th, 92nd and 99th respectively.

A TY student at St Flannans College, Dean’s result was the highlight for the county at the Irish Life Health National Cross Country Championships. He had a top ten finish as did Donal Devane in the Junior Men’s race with Mark Hanrahan making it into the top 50, Padraig Cahill (87th), Matthew Power (112th) and Jason O’Regan (125th).

Laura Healy also of Ennis Track was 15th in the Junior Womens followed by Roisin Cahill (40th), Eva Carey (58th), Carla Griffin (77th), Róise Ní Lachtain (102nd). Finn Duignan of St Cronans AC took the silver medal in the Boys U12 with James Rochford (17th), Oliver Finn (21st), Ian Ryan (30th), Daithí O’Leary (34th), Brian Wallace (42nd), Aodán Ó Lachtain (56th), Ryan Kelly (79th) all putting in strong runs.

The death of ash and its impact on hurley makers

C

LARE native Sean Torpey is the third generation of a family tree steeped in elite level hurley making. Since 1981, Torpey Hurley’s has been arming the nation with the tools to perform the fastest field sport in the world. Operating out of Sixmilebridge, Sean traces the lineage of his family business back to his grand uncle, Patrick Torpey, who first put his hand to the craft in the 1930s, later indoctrinating his father and subsequently Sean himself. For over 30 years, Torpey Hurley’s has enjoyed critical acclaim and a thriving business model, however the recent epidemic of ash dieback threatens to wipe out the ash tree altogether, with great uncertainty surrounding the hurley making industry in the years to come.

The disease was first noticed in 2012 in mainland Europe, where its proliferation was sharp and severe. Reflecting on the initial threat to a thriving industry, Sean admits, “It would have been seen creeping into more mature trees, we were looking at other countries and seeing how they were progressing. Countries like Denmark were being completely wiped out by the disease. 90 per cent of ash trees are now dead or dying.

Being an island nation, we would have been shouting about it back in 2012 and warning people but unfortunately, we didn’t shout loud enough. We knew that whatever we saw in mainland Europe, we would see happen in Ireland two or three years later.”

Sean sources his ash from an FSC certified forest in the Netherlands, in what he describes as quite a labour-intensive operation. The company partakes on three to four trips every winter, where certain trees are selected for their high-quality ash. This selection process is incremental in producing unparalleled quality hurleys as the quality of the ash determines the overall final product. The ash is then sawed and planked here in Ireland where any defects to the wood are determined. Finally, the ash in machined, planed and spokeshaved before it can be placed into the hurlers hand.

The subsequent spread of the disease to Ireland was inevitable and ash dieback is now rampant in Irish forests. On local repercussions, Sean exclaims, “The disease became very prominent in Ireland in the last three years and we have 20,000 ash trees planted on our own land and half of them have got ash dieback disease now and they will have to come out of the ground.

It’s a big issue. My father would have sown those trees for the future of our business, and he sacrificed a lot of good farmland. We were originally farmers here before the business started taking off with Clare winning in ’95 and again in 2013. It’s sad in that he would have liked to have seen that as the next generation of the business and some of that ash being used in the fields around Ireland.”

Ash dieback begins at the top of the ash tree, where a parasitic organism takes up residence in the leaf. It creates a mushroom like structure that protrudes from the leaf and is subsequently blown by the wind and spreads to other ash trees in close proximity. Mature ash trees offer a great deal of resistance to the disease and often times suffer little consequence. Their younger counterparts are more susceptible and unlikely to survive due to an underdeveloped immune system. Although currently untreatable, Sean is hopeful that recent undertakings by Teagasc in looking at ash trees that are genetically resistant to the disease, spells hope for the hurley making industry.

Despite the onset of the fatal disease and a lack of alternatives, Sean feels the industry isn’t in jeopardy yet but warns of a sudden increase in the price of hurleys in years to come, “Ash dieback doesn’t have a massive effect in mature trees. There are four roots in every ash tree. You could have one root that could have decayed because of the disease but the other three roots are fine. It’s about maximising the material that we have. Every business has to take care of supply and demand. We only use the bottom 20 per cent of the tree, being the roots. We are competing a lot with other industries and the price of the material has gone quite high in the last number of years which will probably go up further again.”

Referring to alternative forms of ash, Sean mentions a certain slow growing breed of trees originating from Eastern Europe. “This material is being grown on ground where the soil spends a lot of the time in cold conditions. The growth rate is a little bit slower and the material is a little bit more brittle. What the customers are going to have to look at going forward is where the material is coming from and the price point will be judged on that.

As for the ash tree itself, Sean hopes that it won’t be lost to the planet as, “it takes 30 to 45 years for each ash tree to mature into a hurley. All I can say is that there is great uncertainty around the material at the moment.”

Not just one trick Circus Ponies THE Circus Ponies is a collection of like-minded, enthusiastic and energetic musicians local to Clare. They bring to you thier own dynamic twist on classics from multiple genres through an arrangement that includes violin, keyboards, rhythm, lead & bass guitars, drums/percussion, a wonderful brass section and plenty of energy & verve from the front. All this with the aim of providing positive vibes for punters in support of a wonderful cause - mental health in Co. Clare.

The collective is a merging of many Arts groups such as The Ennis Gospel Choir, The Ennis Brass Band, The Ennis Acoustic Club, The Whithorse Sessions, Bentley Boys and Eurovision singer Sarah McTiernan.

The talented group have been building and practicing a vibrant set over the past number of weeks, having serious fun in the process! Their first live show is penciled in for Christmas this year,

with hotly anticipated tickets due to be released towards the end of November Proceeds from the gigs will be donated to two hugely important organisations that look to reach out and provide support services for people in our community who have struggle in their lives. These organisations, namely Pièta House & Elevate, are support services that are becoming more and more important in our community. The Circus Ponies are looking to promote and create further awareness of their fantastic work.

The longer term goal of The Circus Ponies Project is to continue to promote awareness of mental health supports available in our community, whilst providing additional support through the medium of music and arts.

They aim to organize a festival tent which will become a regular on Co. Clare’s festival scene and provide a platform for local musicians and perform-

ing artists in 2020 and onwards. The ‘Good for the Ceann’ tent promises to be a haven for all - place to relax, unwind, chat, listen and enjoy a mix of locally curated music, art and well-being activities.

The unique spoken word of Stephen James Smith

LÓR is proud to present one of the most exciting and vibrant artists of our time acclaimed writer, poet and performer Stephen James Smith with guest artist Thunderclap Murphy in a unique performance of spoken word and music.

Stephen has performed his poetry at high profile events and festivals around the world and in 2012 he was invited to perform for the Irish Olympic team in London. In October 2018 Stephen appeared on a special edition of The Late Late Show live from London, where he recited his poem This Community to a TV audience of 1.1 million. Stephen has featured in several documentaries for television such as RTÉ’s IFTA Award Winning documentary WB Yeats: No Country for Old Men and has received numerous poetry video commissions from Listowel Writer’s Week, Creative Ireland and the London Irish Centre.

In 2017 Stephen was commissioned

by St. Patrick’s Festival to write a new poem as a “celebratory narrative” of Ireland. The resultant piece My Ireland is accompanied by a short film by Director Myles O’Reilly, arranged and mixed by Conor O’Brien (Villagers), with music by Colm Mac Con Iomaire,

Loah, Saint Sister, Eithne Ní Chatháin (aka Inni-K) and Ye Vagabonds. It has been viewed over 300,000 times online and was screened at London Film Festival in Trafalgar Square on March 17th.

The poem was in many ways a follow on from Smith’s previous poetry video Dublin You Are, which itself clocked up in excess of 250k views.

He will be joined on stage by songwriter, performer and multi-instrumentalist Thunderclap Murphy. Thunderclap was the host of Dublin’s monthly poetry slam, Slam Sunday for five years, and his live performance combines poetry, songwriting, live looping and hip-hop.

Expect a truly special mix of high-energy spoken word and live music in this cabaret style gig.

NORTH CLARE NCHS DECEMBER TALK The North Clare Historical Society will hold its next talk in the current series on Tuesday 3rd December entitled Reward of Valour - the Story of Patrick Sheehan' by Tom Hurley. When the Crimean War ended in 1856, Patrick Sheehan returned blind after fighting with the British army. He subsequently served a prison term having been arrested for begging. He wrote The Glen Of Aherlow aimed at discouraging other Irishmen from enlisting in the British army. The talk will shed light on the story of Patrick Sheehan, the Crimean War and the ballad. Included will be details of Sheehan's enlistment, Crimean War involvement, circumstances of his blindness, story of his arrest and the truth of whether his pension was ever restored by the British government. The talk will also investigate his death and access how accurate the song's lyrics are pertaining to the details of his life. Details of locations and landmarks connected with his story will also be incorporated. The Clare Connection will be revealed. Venue: The Courthouse Gallery in Ennistymon at 8pm. All are welcome.

FIFTY-FIVE YEARS OF YOUTH ACTIVITY IN COROFIN BOOK LAUNCH Days of Our Youth is an illuminatory compilation of photographs, press clippings and personal memoirs charting six decades of youth activity in Corofin. It is a celebratory history tracing the survival and evolution of a youth club set up in the monochrome low tech era of a rural 1960s village through to the present day multicolour, multi-tech urbanized rural hub that Corofin has become.

A young Garda Paddy Coleman stationed in Corofin with the help of the clergy set up the club in 1964; a maverick initiative and one of the first youth clubs to be inaugurated in the country. N A multicultural Ireland, we have many positive things to learn from one another. But, sadly, not everyone thinks that way. Racism is becoming a major issue in our society; in fact, it appears to be on the rise. Racism as we know is discrimination, pre-judgements or hostile behaviours directed at another person on the basis of their race, ethnicity, gender or cultural background. Racism can come in many different forms, from harsh comments to offensive actions. In more extreme cases, racism occurs in public spaces and comes from strangers, and can escalate to violent hate crimes. Any form of racism is unacceptable, even a comment or an action that is subtle or occurs in a casual environment.

It’s not on and we must end it now.

Racism is more than just physical pain; racism robs people of colour of their humanity and dignity and leaves personal, psychological, and spiritual injuries. Racism is traumatic because it is a loss of protection, safety, nurturance, and acceptance—all things children and people need to function in life. Standing up to racism isn’t easy, but it’s the right thing to do.

Whether you’re in school, college or the workplace, challenging accusations, assumptions and stereotypes is a good way of letting people know it’s not okay to be racist.

Remember, sometimes people can unintentionally make comments that appear racist.

Standing up to these comments can be a great way for people to learn about the negative impact they’re having. As long as I live, I will always champion the cause of those who experience hatred and bias because of their gender, ethnic origins, skin colour or religious beliefs.

In recent years, as right wing extremism has gained ground in our societies, we have become more aware of the overt threats to democratic principles and values. Yet, within our own societies and cultures there remain hidden prejudices and bias. Some such manifestations are often generated by poor communication, fear or ignorance and can result in public protest such as against the relocation of refugees or migrants in our own communities. We need to focus on changing behaviour before attitudes will change. Education, and particularly citizen

The Need for True Leadership Listening to people and indeed some people’s nasty racist rhetoric recently, one might think that leadership has to be aggressive and confrontational, but consider this parable about leadership. A student assigned to write an essay about an effective leader wrote this story: “I’ve been taking a bus to

Racism, bigotry, discrimination, sexism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, xenophobia, should have no place in our society. So as another new week begins, may you be blessed and may others be blessed by you. May you be blessed with all things good. May your joys, like the stars at night and the leaves falling in autumn, be too numerous for you to count. May your victories be more abundant than all the blades of grass on all the fields in all the world or grains of sand on all the beaches, on all the oceans in all the world.

May racism be absent from your life and may beauty, order, real love and abundance be your constant companion. May every path you choose lead to that which is pure and good and caring. And when there is only darkness and storms closing in, may the light at the core of your being illuminate the world. SUNK COST FALLICY

Once we have started to invest, we tend to struggle to close out investments that prove unprofitable. On Black Friday, if we have already made the initial upfront investment of getting up before sunrise, driving to town or to the shopping centre, finding

parking and waiting in line for the store to open, we will be inclined to buy more than we initially came for. No matter the upfront investment, it remains helpful to consider at each point whether the purchase is worthwhile and whether it brings us closer to our longer-term financial objectives. THE HALO EFFECT

One exceptionally good sales deal can create the perception that all of the retailer’s deals are also steals by association. This phenomenon – termed the ‘halo effect’ – means consumers will have difficulty viewing the deals on Black Friday in a nuanced way, where some may be highly discounted, but others may not.

A retailer baiting with one or two exceptional discounts may not offer uniformly discounted products and consumers should weigh each purchasing decision with equal scepticism.

Generally the time limit on returns is 28 days but many retailers have variations on their return policies so it is important to check each company’s respective guidelines before you buy to ensure you don’t accidentally breach their policy terms. Some terms (like giving you 14 days to notify the company of your intent to return and a further 14 to physically return the item) can trip unsuspecting consumers. There is also the risk that your order doesn’t arrive on time or goes missing; the best way to avoid this scenario is to only deal with trusted retailers!

You might also get a better deal in a local shop and the owner or the person might give you advice on the product you are buying, or you are going to buy.

CLARE ALL-IRELAND WIN 1995 On September 3rd, 1995, Clare took on Offaly in the 108th All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final. The Banner men were looking to add to their single All-Ireland title win back in 1914, having beaten Laois 5–1 to 1–0 after Laois defeated reigning champions Kilkenny in the build up to the final. Eighty-One years later the Banner men were back to their brilliant best under the guise of manager Ger Loughnane and captain Anthony Daly. Having beaten Limerick to win the Munster final and schooling neighbours Galway in the All-Ireland Semi-Final, things were looking bright for the men who bore the same colours as the mighty Brian Boru in 1014. Offaly drew first blood at Croke Park with a point from Daithi Regan after twenty seconds. Seanie McMahon got Clare’s first point of the day being inaugurated as Clare’s first player to score in an All-Ireland final for 63 years. After a spectacle of sublime defending from both sides, it was Offaly who finally cracked the back of the net from a strike off Michael Duignan’s hurl, sending the Clare crowd into a plight of panic on the cusp of half time. Offaly nabbed a second goal after half time, with the score now reading Offaly 2-07 Clare 0-10. Following an Anthony Daly free which was blocked by Offaly goalkeeper David Hughes, the ball subsequently made its way to the hurl of substitute Eamonn Taaffe, who buried it high into the net, sending the entire population of Clare into jubilation. The final whistle sounded as County Clare were crowned 1995 All-Ireland champions, winning 1-13 to 2-8. After being presented with the Liam McCarthy cup from GAA President Jack Bootham in the Hogan Stand, Captain Anthony Daly famously remarked over the intercom, “There’s been a missing person in Clare for 81 long years.

Well today that person has been found alive and that person’s name is Liam McCarthy.”

FATHER TED COMES TO CLARE In 1995, in and around the village of Kilfenora, one of the national treasures of Irish culture began to spread its wings. Set in the fictional village of Craggy Island, Father Ted starring Dermot Morgan as Father Ted Crilly, Ardal O’ Hanlon as Father Dougal McGuire and Frank Kelly as Father Jack Hackett, aired for a total of 25 episodes. The Parochial House where the show is set lies at Glenquin, on the Boston Road from Kilnaboy. Hundreds of Father Ted enthusiasts make this pilgrimage from far and wide, each year. Most of the location work was filmed in County Clare, in places such as Corofin, Kilfenora, Ennis, Ennistymon and Kilnaboy. The series was discontinued after three seasons prior to lead actor Dermot Morgan’s untimely death due to cardiac arrest. The show soon gained international acclaim from Ireland, Britain and Australia with deep ties to simplistic Irish life and stereotypes. In January 2007, a heated dispute began between the island of Inisheer and Inishmore over which island could claim the honourary title of Craggy Island. Much like the slapstick nature of Father Ted, the two islands battled it out in a five a side football match, with the winner of the bout receiving the fabled emblem of being called Craggy Island. Inishmore won 2-0. Since 2007, Father Ted has been celebrated by the annual ‘The Friends of Ted Festival’, also known as Ted Fest. The show aired from 21st April 1995 to 1st May 1998.

SISTERS OF MERCY ENNIS The Sisters of Mercy came to Ennis to establish a convent on May 29, 1854.

Catherine Mc Auley opened the first house in Baggot Street, Dublin on September 24th, 1827. Convents at Tullamore and Limerick were the inspiration for the Sister to come to the Clare capital. The Sister’s participated in local education and worked closely with the sick. A brand-new convent was established in 1861 to house an influx of new sisters. The site that now hold the Clare Museum was constructed as a primary school in 1865 and the main convent complex and classrooms were built in 1869. Expansion and progression were the hegemony of the organisation at the time with Branch Houses established in Killaloe and Spanish Point and Colaiste Muire constructed in Ennis in the year 1860.

The Sister’s of Mercy helped the poor and were enrolled as administrators and nurses in the workhouses of Ennis, Kilrush, Corofin and Roscrea. Sisters from Ennis formed connections in the USA and organised a migrant trail to California in 1857 and Connecticut in 1872. The twentieth century solidified the Sister’s large communal profile internationally. The foundation comprised of 49 sisters in Ennis as documented in the 1901 Census, later establishing the Holy Family School in 1962. This school was to mimic a Californian model whereby classrooms faced southwards and contained a bathroom and cloakroom. Finally, in 1995, the sisters moved location and the original building was demolished.

An inside look at Clare’s political spectrum

Claremen’s pivotal role in history & the State’s indifference

L

AST Sunday, I, alongside many other Clare natives and descendants, gathered in Dublin’s Dame Street at noon.

The reason for our gathering was that of the 99th anniversary of the death of our relatives Peadar Clancy and Conor Clune. They, alongside Dick McKee, were killed

by Crown Forces in Dublin Castle on Bloody Sunday 1920 in reprisals for the assassination that morning of members of the British security and intelligence operation in Dublin. In all, Michael Collins’ Squad, hand picked by McKee and Clancy, my great grand uncle, killed 15 British operatives including members of the infamous Cairo gang as well as auxiliaries and an informant. Clune was an innocent bystander, but avid Gaelic Leaguer, who happened to be in Vaughan’s Hotel along with Clancy and McKee when it was raided.

The three men were brutally killed in Dublin Castle and their deaths covered up as “shot while trying to escape”. It was a pivotal day in Irish history and one worth remembering.

Some 99 years on from the events of Bloody Sunday, most widely remembered by the cold blooded murder of civilians in Croke Park which also happened that day, and the small crowd of people who met outside the room where the three men died met once again to remember the sacrifice they made for the cause of Irish freedom. It was a nice commemoration with speeches from relatives of the men, including my cousin Conor Clune from Quin who, along with his brother Seamus, uniquely claim ancestry from both Clancy and Clune from each side of their family.

The 1916-21 Club are responsible for hosting it each year and once again, stepped up to the plate.

However, there was agreement

from all parties in attendance that something was amiss.

The fact that the commemoration was taking place on Dame Street outside the room in the Castle where the events unfolded 99 years previously rather than inside the Castle irked many. The reason for this being that the Castle wanted to charge the group a fee to be on the grounds. The fact that the State wishes to charge for the celebration of the lives of men without whom it would not exist, rankled with many. It is a symptom of where we have come as a society. There has been such a dramatic underfunding of almost all branches of State operations, going back years, that each one now feels their primary focus is to balance the books more than anything else they’re supposed to do. How much would the cost to the Castle be to let the group mark the passing of their patriot dead? Not a penny, but the opportunity to make a few quid cannot be missed! And that’s what’s going wrong with the country in my view. We’ve long drifted from being a society but instead become an economy.

It can be seen in so many facets of daily life as State and public services are closed, or “streamlined” as the political jargon goes. “The market will prevail”, a refrain we’ve heard to justify this ideology. However, that has never been the case when it come to a society that treasures its heritage and looks after the needs of the must vulnerable. A country that is based primarily on an economy will always leaves those on the fringes behind as looking after them is more costly. It will also fail to fund the arts, heritage and other such endeavours adequately. Such things ultimately don’t generate wealth back into State coffers.

The most obvious example of the heartlessness of this ideology is with the current housing crisis. In the past couple of weeks,

Dublin City Council agreed a landmark deal with a developer that would see them redevelop a site in Stoneybatter in the heart of the city that would deliver almost 640 units for social and affordable housing, 400 of which the Council would get for free. The developer would then sell the remaining 20 per cent of the 820 units as private dwellings. The deal though looks to be at risk because Minister Eoghan Murphy has since said that Central Government will not approve funding to buy the 240 units on offer, at cost price, from the developer for affordable rental units. For a housing minister to say he wants to solve the housing crisis one breath, then shoot down 240 such units at cost price in Dublin city centre with the next breath is extraordinary hypocrisy.

It’s not though that he or his Fine Gael party don’t care, it’s that ideologically they are wedded to the idea that the market can solves the housing crisis on its own, without overbearing State intervention. This even though it has never done so in any country’s history. Just like pure socialism has been a failed political ideology in every country it has been tried, pure capitalism is a failure as well, albeit, a less visible and less widespread failure. Its failure masks itself as a personal failure of those who can’t afford the rising prices, even though that’s in reality a failure of the system that always keeps prices out of reach.

We’re sadly not alone in Ireland in looking to ever more extreme political ideologies. Even at that, we’re not even in extremist territory in what is now considered popular public political opinion.

One need only look to the US and UK where Republicans/Tories are going ever further right while Democrats/Labour are veering dramatically to the left. Both sides wishing to career their respective countries further towards ideologies that are proven failures.

Social Democracy had been the dominant political ideology in the Western Hemisphere post WWII and is responsible for the shared peace and prosperity we have enjoyed in that time. How sad it would be to think we might abandon that in favour of emotive populism from extreme points of view.

There’s a reason history should remain a compulsory school subject; the hope that we don’t repeat its mistakes. Sadly, it looks like some don’t wish to learn.

limate change is the biggest universal challenge today but the battle against it must begin at home - the message Clean Ireland Recycling is sending as it proudly celebrates 30 years in business as a leading provider of environmentally focussed solutions to waste management.

But, as Brian Lyons, General Manager of Clean Ireland Recycling reflected on three decades as a proud market leader, the next 30 years and more are absolutely critical for our and future generations’ lives.

“From the very origins of the company, we’ve always been looking for new and better ways to manage the publics’ waste. If you think back to 30 years ago, the solution to waste was, by and large, dump it in a great big hole – a landfill. It was unsustainable but thankfully we’ve moved beyond that yet we have never had a greater need to find environmentally friendly solutions than we have today due to climate change.

“When your origins are where ours are, just a few miles from the Atlantic here in West Clare, you have to care about the environment. That’s what drove our founders. They were determined to find a way to do it better and that’s what we’ve been doing for 30 years. Doing it the right way. So much so that it’s become our slogan – Doing it Right,” Brian said.

One innovation rolled off after the other and today the Clean Ireland Recycling truck is effectively a mobile civic amenity site. A multi-compartment truck that, because of its unique design and capacity to collect all waste streams in one visit, has less journeys, therefore lowering customers’ carbon footprints.

In a latest initiative that most definitely turns the company and their customers towards the future, Clean Ireland Recycling is powering its trucks from Compressed Natural Gas – a significantly lower emission fuel source than the diesel trucks used by others. And they have plans for more.

“We are changing our diesel trucks to CNG trucks as they fall due for replacement. Better still, the food waste that we collect is going for anaerobic digestion which creates BioGas which in turn is used to create renewable electricity for the national grid. In just a few years, that gas will be used for our trucks.

That means the waste you create at home or in your office can be used to fuel the truck that comes and collects it.

That’s our ambition and we will get there.”

The company’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Last year Clean Ireland Recycling won the top award at the prestigious Repak sponsored Pakman Awards. In short, that meant it was seen by leading experts as Ireland’s best company when it comes to protecting the environment. The company took home the title of Household Collector of Year.

50 disqualified Clare households could now be eligible for Mortgage To Rent scheme

A

large proportion of Clare householders previously disqualified from a Government scheme designed to keep them in their homes could now be eligible to re-enter.

New figures from the Housing Agency show that 50 households in the county were ruled out of the Mortgage To Rent scheme that aims to keep homeowners with unsustainable debt in their current homes.

However, a leading expert in the field says many of those who had their applications rejected could now find solutions thanks to changes in the scheme which allows householders to remain in their homes as tenants of their local authority, paying an affordable income-based rent.

"There has been a widening of the house value eligibility parameters by the Government, which have risen to €305,000 in Clare," said Paul Cunningham, CEO of the only Government-approved Mortgage To Rent private operator, Home For Life.

"Another reason is Home For Life's arrival into the scheme. Unlike many other operators, we are happy to consider rural dwellings or houses that need money spent on them to bring them up to a good standard.

"In the past, those two categories were responsible for high numbers of termination

decisions.

"Home For Life is happy to assess each case on its merits and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those wanting their mortgage debt resolved can achieve that.

"We do not reject cases because of the location of the property or the level of repairs needed which was a problem in the past."

According to Central Bank figures, there are over 700 family home loans around the county in arrears for two years or more.

Under the Mortgage To Rent scheme, 26 cases have either been completed or are being actively progressed, and this number is expected to increase significantly in the coming 12 months.

"There is a growing realisation that Mortgage To Rent provides a real alternative for both the householders and the lenders to find a solution that works for all sides," said Mr Cunningham.

"The Government has developed the scheme over the years by widening the eligibility bands while now all lenders including banks and credit servicing funds are offering Mortgage To Rent as an important part of their options for homeowners in long term arrears.

"Because lenders want to avoid reposses-

sions, Mortgage To Rent is now the ethical alternative to repossession.

"With the upcoming elections, it is also important that electoral candidates under-

stand how the MTR scheme could work for many of their constituents who find themselves in serious mortgage arrears."

Sweeney: ‘Breckans will not give up’ NINE years ago, St Breckans clashed with Kerry opponents in the Munster intermediate football final and came up short, they are in familiar territory on Sunday as they face Kerry’s Templenoe in the provincial decider, writes Páraic McMahon.

Alan Sweeney was a 13-year old spectator watching his club suffer a seven-point defeat, the standout memory being the rapturous reception St Breckans received as they made their way onto the field at the Gaelic Grounds. This weekend, he will have the honour of leading the North Clare men into battle.

“We know we don’t get these opportunities every year. A lot of us were there on the day nine years ago, it was a massive day for the parish, the lads just fell short after a massive

performance. Going into this final, it’s great to have two or three of them lads still on board, they’ve shown great experience this year, all of them haven’t been playing but they’ve really helped us get through the tough games”.

On Sunday gone, a last minute Ciaran Downes score sent Kilmihil/Shannon Gaels to glory over St Breckans in the U21A final. Having picked up some knocks, the fitness of the younger Lisdoonvarna and Doolin men will be monitored at training on Wednesday night.

A selector to the U21 side in which eight starting members are expected to feature in the intermediate final, Sweeney admitted that picking up the spirits hasn’t been easy. “It’s been very, very difficult. They went

into the 21s game and knew it was going to be a massive challenge, Kilmihil/Shannon Gaels are a very strong team.

“Anyone that has ever lost a county final like that with the last kick of the game knows it’s so hard to pick yourself up.

Not many teams get a chance to make amends a week later, we’ll be going down to Mallow on Sunday with a lot of fire in the belly and some hurt bottled up from last week.”

Preparation is key to winter golf

INTER is well and truly here and it does not always mean your golf season has to come to an end. Most of us only enjoy playing golf when the sun is shining, however golf can also be enjoyable even during those colder winter months, as long as you are prepared for it with the correct clothing attire and accessories.

I’ve always struggled with the cold weather myself, my hands especially get cold quiet quickly when I’m golfing over these winter months.

When my hands get cold I can’t properly feel the golf club and the numbness effects my ability to release the club effectively and efficiently.

A few years ago I was playing a tournament on a cold winter day and because of the cold wind chill I literally couldn’t clinch my fist while out golfing. I promised myself that day I will never play another game without the correct attire in my bag to cater for any possible climate. The following day I filled my golf bag with a warm woolen hat, neck warmer, warm winter mitts, handwarmers, umbrella, rain hat, rain suit - basically all the attire you needs for playing golf in Ireland.

Let’s face it, in Ireland we can get cold and wet days during the summer as well as those cold and wet winter days, therefore our golf bag needs to be kitted out correctly for every type of weather all year round.

Since knitting out my golf bag regardless of the weather, I have the extra layers and accessories available

so I can still enjoy my game of golf even when the sun isn’t shining. I’ve learned that although it might be particularly cold or wet during the winter, when you have the right attire on you can still be warm and dry. Let’s face it, if you just wait for the perfect weather in Ireland you won’t get to play that often. So why not look at your own golf bag and make a list of items that you are missing to help you enjoy the game regardless of the weather you might have to endure while playing.

A simple addition to your golf bag like a neck warmer, rain hat, rain gloves, warm winter mitts can make all the difference in your enjoyment on any particular day as well as helping you to shoot a lower score than you thought was possible.
