UNDS OF €15M have been requested from the Government by Clare County Council as part of a transfer of Shannon Heritage operated tourism sites. Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, Knappogue Castle, Crauggownen and a retail outlet at the Cliffs of Moher had all been operated by Shannon Heritage but the Council have been requested to take over ownership by the Government. Details of the negotiations between the local authority and the Government were outlined to county council-
lors at a behind closed doors briefing on Monday. €5m has been sought by the Council for the first year of running the sites with an approximate €3m per year needed subsequently for three years. This is to cover an estimated €1.5m repair of the roof at Bunratty Castle, provisions for the 150 Shannon Heritage staff that would be added to the Council’s payroll and additional repairs to enable a full revamp. “Clare County Council are willing to go on the dancefloor and dance if we’re let. It’s about saving jobs and protecting tourism and heritage in the county,” Director of Rural Development, Leonard Cleary remarked of the task at hand.
