OCATING a bus stop in very close proximity to Blake’s Corner has been labelled “insane” by Green Party councillor, Roisin Garvey.

Speaking at the adjourned June meeting of Clare County Council, the first Green Party representative on the local authority since Brian Meaney claimed that all of Bus Éireann’s timetables at bus stops throughout North Clare were outdated by two years.

“Blake’s Corner is infamous and the bus stop is at Blake’s Corner on the T junction which is insane. All of Bus Éireann’s timetables for North Clare are two years old, I’ve contacted them several times to no avail, not everyone is smart phone savvy”.

When contacted by The Clare Echo, a spokesperson for Bus Éireann stated, “The Local Authority is the designated body for the approval of bus stops”.

An Garda Síochána previously held the function of sanctioning their appropriate location. “The location of any new stop has to be agreed and approved by the Local Authority on the basis of an

approved route timetable from the National Transport Authority”.

Regarding the outdated timetables, the spokesperson said, “Bus Éireann endeavours to provide bus stop information at all stops across its nationwide network (5000 plus stops) that have the infrastructure available to display this information. This information where posted displays the date the timetable was introduced and is updated as timetables are enhanced/changed as part of service improvements. If there are specific locations across our nationwide network where information is out of date, when this is brought to our attention through feedback from our customers, it is updated at the earliest opportunity”.

Director of Service with Clare County Council, Carmel Kirby outlined plans are in place to relocate the bus stop in Ennistymon. “The bus stop is being moved as part of redesigned Ennistymon bypass. We’re looking at the whole integration of traffic management, these issues are being raised by our own engineers too”

Harty to meet ESB chiefs on Moneypoint PÁRAIC McMAHON

EAD ESB officials are to meet Independent TD, Dr. Michael Harty to discuss the future of Moneypoint.

It is expected the meeting will take place next week and the Clare TD outlined his purpose in seeking the meeting with ESB CEO, Pat O’Doherty was to discover “what plans the ESB has for the future of the plant after 2025 when coal burning electricity generation must cease”.

A senior manager from the ESB Generation and Trading Directorate in Dublin will attend the meeting as will Seán Hegarty, Moneypoint Station Manager.

“I have made numerous efforts to discover what options the ESB is considering but even the Minister responsible for Energy

Richard Bruton doesn’t seem to know or if he does, he is not sharing it with the Dáil or with people of West Clare. I am glad that ESB CEO Pat O’Doherty has agreed to this briefing and I hope it will produce more information than has been available to date,” Harty told The Clare Echo.

O’Doherty has been advised that the key issues Harty wants to discuss are threats to the permanent workforce in the near future, employment opportunities for contractors and future plans as 2025 and the ceasing of coal burning nears.

“I am sure ESB senior management is acutely aware of local worries for employment and the economy. Failure to provide meaningful information to a TD who lives close to the power station would send out all the wrong signals and would suggest that all is not well. I am hopeful the ESB will be straightforward and upfront,” the Kilmihil resident added.

Clare communities tackle gum litter

A COUNTYWIDE campaign to reduce littered gum in communities across Clare has been launched.Clare County Council this week joined the students of Corofin National School and members of Corofin Tidy Towns for the launch of the Gum Litter Taskforce’s gum litter education campaign.

Research commissioned by the Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) and conducted by Kantar Millward Brown during the 2018 campaign has highlighted the campaign’s positive effect on behaviour towards gum disposal. The latest results show that 88% of people said that they always dispose of their gum correctly, up from 54% when the campaign first began.

Conor Leyden, Environmental Community Warden, Clare Co Council, said “The Gum Litter Taskforce is a fantastic initiative for communities to get involved in. Each year, we see communities coming together with the common aim of reducing the level of littered gum within their respective localities. The campaign has achieved positive results to date in this regard, and I hope this year’s campaign will continue to further build on those results”.

Kilrush-Ennis road causes frustration PÁRAIC McMAHON

ECENT alterations to the speed limit along a 43km stretch of road from Kilrush to Ennis described as “the main artery” between the county town and West Clare has caused widespread frustration and anger.

Modifications to speed limits across Clare were introduced at the beginning of June. Twelve speed limits are now in place along the N68 between Ennis and Kilrush, a 43 kilometre road.

What had been a 100km/h zone from Lissycasey to Kilrush has been reduced to 80km/h. Those travelling from Kilrush to Ennis have had 15 to 20 minutes added on to their commute which as locals have pointed out “could be up to 40 minutes a day”, equating to 200 minutes a week or 10,400 minutes a year for those using the road five days a week.

Former Kilrush Town Councillor, Paul Moroney outlined that the reaction in West Clare is one of anger. “Frustration at how it was introduced and how it seemed to arrive on the doorstep on June 1, anger at what they are seeing on the roads which is 10 different speed limit changes between the town of Kilrush and the town of Ennis. They are seeing lines of cars because they can’t overtake and there are some drivers getting impatient driving to overtake five or six cars at once.

It is going to make the roads more not less dangerous.

"It is confusing, people don’t know what speed limit they are supposed to be doing.”

Upon contacting Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), the manager of Patrick Bourke Menswear in Kilrush has only received “a general response” with an acknowledgement of his correspondence. “I’ve been in contact with the councillors who have adopted this last October and got their views on it... They are going to reserve judgement a bit longer, we’re coming into the busiest time of year for that road with the traffic going back from Limerick to Kilkee, the proof will be in the pudding in the sense that with extra volume of traffic you will see what could happen and that’s a concern”.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Paul pointed out that the changes will lead to drivers taking more risks on the N68. “I’ve seen side-roads, there’s a lot of them on the Kilrush to Ennis Rd, it’s only one lane wide and there is grass growing in the middle of it with a lovely shiny new sign post saying 80km an hour, tell me that it’s keeping things safe?"

Fianna Fáil General Election candidate, Rita McInerney told The Clare Echo the situation highlights the urgent need for upgrading works on the road to occur.

“The N68 is the main thoroughfare in terms of accessing the Wild Atlantic Way from the motorway and Shannon airport. The new restriction coupled with a lack of a meaningful upgrade on the road network is adding to the feelings of isolation in West Clare."

Man held Grounding of Boeing 737 Max to his bed has taken €60m from MidWest in robbery A SOUTH East Clare man was held captive by one thief in his bedroom as another conducted a robbery of the home on Friday evening.

On the longest day of the year, June 21st, two males entered a residence at Ardnataggle, O’Briensbridge. Upon gaining entry to the house, the robbers found the homeowner in bed, one of them held him to his bed while the other searched the property.

As they struggled to find what they were looking for, the pair then threatened the homeowner. They soon fled the house with a small sum of money and the man’s mobile phone.

Both males are believed to be in their twenties and left the house in a car in the direction of Clonlara Cross. The injured party did not get a description of the vehicle used. One of the men was taller than 5’10 and the other shorter, they wore dark clothing with knitted masks and gloves.

Gardaí have confirmed to The Clare Echo that the two thieves had “local accents”.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area of Ardnataggle, O’Brien’s Bridge between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on the evening of Friday, 21st June and may have seen anything suspicious or may have dash cam footage to contact Killaloe Garda Station on 061 620540”.

CONTINUED grounding of Boeing 737 Max aircraft has taken €60 million out of the MidWest economy according to Shannon Chamber, who have lamented the lack of financial support provided to Shannon Airport by the Government.

Less than a fortnight ago, it was announced that the Government would give almost €14m in taxpayers money to some regional airports in the country.

Minister for Transport, Shane Ross confirmed grant funding of €5.7m for Knock Airport, €2.2m for Kerry Airport, €884.912 to Donegal Airport and subject to conditions, to give €5 million of exchequer funding to Waterford Airport, a facility that has not had any commercial flights since 2016.

CEO of Shannon Chamber, Helen Downes felt it highlighted a continued lack of financial

support for Shannon Airport.

"If the Government is serious about its promise, in the National Planning Framework, to drive regional economies, it may be timely for them to broaden their support for airports that are vital catalysts for regional growth.

Shannon Airport suffers from a lack of support around capital expenditure projects and is in the process of investing €20 million in safety and security projects from its own resources. This funding would be better invested in securing new routes and services to feed the regional economy.

"However, unlike other regional airports, who recently received Government subsidisation in the order of €14m for capital expenditure works, Shannon receives no exchequer support despite the fact that under EU rules, as an airport with less than 3 million passengers, it should be able to access such funds”.

Air stated they would not be resuming transatlantic flights from Shannon or Cork this year and assess their plans for 2020. "The decision by Norwegian Airlines to reroute its transatlantic services through Dublin this year, and the associated loss of 120,000 seats for Shannon Airport is a major blow, not just for the Airport, but for the entire Mid-West," Ms Downes stated.

"Whilst this decision has been forced on the airline through the grounding of Boeing Max 737, the associated loss of passengers for Shannon will also take up to

€60 million out of the regional economy linked to reduced ancillary spend on car hire, hotels, restaurants and general spend by inbound passengers right along the Wild Atlantic Way”.

She added in a statement to The Clare Echo, "A loss of passengers at any level has to be counteracted through buy-in by all stakeholders to the existing 30 routes offered by Shannon Airport and a realisation that, without passengers, there is no airport. People grow routes, not airlines, therefore we call on everyone in the Mid-West to make a decision to 'fly Shannon'."

€1m Lotto ticket sold in Sixmilebridge

RELAND’S newest millionaire purchased their winning Lotto ticket in a Sixmilebridge store.

One punter scooped €1m in Saturday’s Lotto Plus One draw after matching all six numbers plus the bonus number having bought their ticket at Reddan’s Store and Sixmilebridge Post Office. The €3.26m Lotto jackpot now rolls over to Tuesday.

In July 2014, the same shop made one Clare family €4,433,754 richer after selling another million euro winning slip.

Tony Reddan, the shop owner expressed his delight with the latest success. “It’s incredible to have sold another winning Lotto ticket worth a massive amount of money.

“I couldn’t believe it when the National Lottery called last night and it’s almost five years to the day since we sold the €4.4 million Lotto jackpot winning ticket!

Although he was successful in last night’s draw, Tony was not the big winner. “It is really good news for the town and I really do hope it is one of our local customers. I’ve no idea who the winner is – it isn’t me even though I did win €3 on the Lotto draw last night”.

National Lottery chiefs are urging punters in Clare to check their tickets to see if their numbers match those from last night’s draw to nab a life-changing jackpot. The numbers drawn were; 3, 4, 19, 32, 39, 46 with a bonus number of 40.

GP services return to Newmarket

P SERVICES are to return to Newmarket-on-Fergus in September. A provisional agreement has been reached with a general practitioner and the HSE. “It is hoped that this GP will commence working in Newmarket-on-Fergus from the 23rd September 2019 on a full time basis. Once this is confirmed a letter will issue to all patients providing them with this information and confirming the date when service will resume,” a spokesperson for the HSE told The Clare Echo.

Newmarket-on-Fergus has been without a GP since the retirement of Dr. Colm Hackett in May who served the local community for the past forty two years. A temporary arrangement is in place with Dr. Yvonne Williams providing medical services to Dr Hackett’s patients at the Shannon Medical Centre until the position is filled.

In March, a panel was advertised with interviews held over the past month, three suitable candidates were identified with the HSE stating during the process that it intended to fill the role on a full-time

capacity.

Community development organisation, Obair had been “inundated” dealing with concerns from elderly local residents regarding the availability of a GP in the village as they found it “extremely difficult” to transport to the medical centre in Shannon.

Independent TD, Dr. Michael Harty felt Newmarket-on-Fergus was “unique in securing the appointment of a full-time replacement”.

“Sadly, this is not the norm in many villages who are often left with an outreach service from an existing medical practice when a long serving GP retires”.

“Colm Hackett provided an excellent caring service and it is inevitable that his retirement would cause anxiety among patients who hold him in high regard. The situation highlights once again the difficulty in finding GPs will to work in rural areas.

Unfortunately, other villages in Clare will face similar problems as doctors reach retirement age.

"There is no easy answer. Younger doctors don’t find single doctor practices attractive and want to work in a team environment.

It isn’t just about money alone, although the medical brain drain to more lucrative employment abroad is an important factor,” Dr Harty added.

Dubai Duty Free trophy comes to Clare schools

TWO primary schools in Munster have won a trick shot competition run by the organisers of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open - the second of eight Rolex Series events on the 2019 Race to Dubai - set to visit Lahinch Golf Club for the first time from July 3-7.

St Conaire’s National School in Shannon and Ennis National School, both in Co. Clare, were chosen by tournament host and 2014 Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley to have a special visitor come to their school ahead of this year’s tournament at the famous County Clare links.

Former European Tour star Des Smyth and Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Championship Director Simon Alliss visited both schools today with the coveted Dubai Duty Free Irish Open trophy in hand.

Pupils and teachers had the chance to get up close and personal with the trophy, which will be presented to the 2019 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open champion in just 12 days’ time at Lahinch Golf Club.

As part of the prize, students were treated to an insightful Q&A session with Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Championship Director, Simon Alliss and two-time Ryder Cup player Des Smyth. The students who entered the competition have also won tickets to the tournament and will receive a behind the scenes tour of the event from European Tour staff.

Clare's hemp farmers blazing a trail

Carrigaholt couple behind Canabaoil hope to collaborate with farmers across country

ENTION Carrigaholt and the first few things that tend to come to mind include dolphin watching, Coláiste Eoghan Uí Chomhraidhe and being part of the Loop Head Peninsula but one more item is set to be added to the list.

Carrigaholt is in fact home to Clare’s first hemp farmers, Daniel Lyons and Laura Foley whose company Canabaoil Ltd is part of an industry that is expected to take flight and could result in the pair becoming millionaires if everything falls into place.

Hemp is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant species. Clare has its fair share of suckler and dairy farmers but the married couple are unique being the only legal cannabis farmers in the county. Noting that they have “raised a few eyebrows” locally but received no negativity, Laura labelled the reaction as “hilarious” with few individuals asking them questions about their growhouse. “There’s a lot of people keeping their eye on the ball, saying if these lads start making money we might follow suit is what I think is going on,” Daniel surmised.

Late 2017 saw the couple set up the company from “savings and grit”, Laura having worked in Limerick Institute of Technology as well as running her walking tours business, the Long Way Round.

Daniel’s background is in the fishing industry and has been a central part in Sealyons Seafood.

His eyes were drawn to “a big gap in the market” which led to the formation of Canaboil. But his awareness of hemp stretches back to his youth and over the past 10 years the Car-

rigaholt native researched it extensively. It was because of this that Daniel gave a bottle of CBD oil to his wife in 2016, a purchase that would prove to be life-changing.

For Laura it was “really beneficial” and soon after they decided to see how far they could take the product, and went about securing a licence from the Health Products Regulatory Authority.

“What we’re producing is cannabinoid paste, cannabinoids are compounds found in the cannabis plant. Hemp is a cannabis plant and they are believed to have benefits for the well-being of your body,” Laura explained.

A lot of hoops have to be jumped through before the product enters the market where they will sell it directly as an ingredient to food manufacturers, being the first in Ireland to

do so. At present they have several clients on a waiting list keen to purchase “large quantities”. “The likes of Coca Cola, Budweiser in the States are trying to get into this industry,” Daniel outlined.

Eyebrows just like those belonging to some of their fellow parishioners do become raised due to hemp being part of the cannabis plant. The duo understand such concerns. “Our licence is for cannabis sativa which is the Latin name for hemp and cannabis, it

is legalised cannabis but saying that gives the impression that it is the illegal drug where really it isn’t, the element in the illegal drug that causes psychoactive effects is THC Tetrahydrocannabinol which is so low in hemp that it is negligible,” Laura said.

Legal reasons prevent them discussing its benefits. “People take it for their well-being and to feel good in general... which is all I can say about it,” Daniel stated.

CBD is not recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for medical use. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study lately saying there is some evidence it may be effective during epileptic seizures and in clinical trials it has been demonstrated as an effective treatment for at least some forms of epi-

lepsy. No case reports of abuse or dependence relating to the use of pure CBD exist.

Bodies such as the HPRA, the Department of Health, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland have ensured the product from the Clare company “is completely compliant with European and Irish Food Law”.

In total, they are farming on over 90 acres of land collaborating with half a dozen farmers in locations such as Moveen,

Ennis, Limerick, Wicklow and Leitrim. Laura continues, "We grow at the moment about four acres ... our hope is that as it’s a success and the farmers that are with us at the moment benefit from growing it, other farmers would be interested in growing it.

If we can grow the amount of farmers then we can increase the processing and it’s really a company that can stay situated in Clare, you have all the experience, all the farming”.

Next year they aim to be farming on over 1,000 acres of land across the country. “What we’re hoping to do is to set up a school ourselves to be able to encourage farmers and to teach them what way we need it grown to the standard that we need,” Daniel revealed.

For now, Laura indicated their timeline for the coming months. “Harvest in September, processing

by October, we hope to have our first shipment for our first customer in November, before Christmas we hope to have made our first sale. Then it will be about scale, it will be about satisfying the customers we have and scaling, planning for the year ahead and getting more licences, applications, increasing the acreage for what we are doing. A thousand acres next year is probably a bit of a stretch”.

Both are excited and positive about the possibilities for the business.

As Daniel alludes, money is not their main focus, “It would be nice to be comfortable, have a nice life, take a nice holiday and all the rest but you’re doing something nice for the environment as well and people appreciate what you are doing, it’s something people want.”

In May, they finished in second place of the 2019 LIT New Frontiers Start-up Awards. The recognition from Enterprise Ireland they felt was “a big

On top of it all, they are both completing Masters degrees from NUIG in Ag Innovation. “Part of it we were able to work together because we were both working on the hemp industry but our final thesis which are due in August are separate, Daniel’s was on the beginning of the hemp industry looking at the barriers there and mine is looking at where it can go or progress to, that would be the more controlled environment of indoor farming.

That’s been really interesting because I’ve got to talk to a lot of people in America growing indoors, a number of companies in Ireland that have very high-tech greenhouses, that’s been brilliant because it connects you with

people in the industry from other countries who you would never get the opportunity to talk to. We’re in West Clare, a million miles away from Canada but it’s nice to be able to connect with those people,” Limerick native Laura pointed out.

She added, “I never thought I would get involved in farming full stop, I’m not green fingered at all. I tend to do the business side of things”. “I do the farming side then,” Daniel chips in.

Like the walking tours she used to lead, Laura and Daniel’s venture has taken them the long way round, despite it being a journey without maps and planned routes, they are determined it will pay off.

l HISTORIC EVENT: The statue of the legendary Willie Clancy in Miltown Malbay, where the summer school and festival will come to life this coming week

VER the past decade a surge in Japanese visitors to Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy has been visible and organisers are expecting their strong presence to remain for the years to come as Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann expands across the world.

From Saturday July 6th and Sunday July 14th, the forty seventh summer school will take place featuring lectures, workshops, recitals, céilithe, instrument and dance classes.

Administrator Harry Hughes confirmed to The Clare Echo that 300 participants are already signed up with several more expected to register in the final days, of that he stated fifty percent were under eighteen with a further thirty percent aged in their mid to late twenties.

A native of Foxford in Co Mayo, Harry has lived in Co Clare for four decades and was

a member of staff at St Josephs Secondary School in Spanish Point where he taught English and History. He became involved in the summer school after it's foundation and has been ever-present since.

“Some people have described it’s growth as phenomenal, maybe that’s the word to use but I prefer to describe it in terms of a gradual, organic growth, we set ourselves up to promote Irish traditional music, to people living in Ireland, locally and abroad and we employed and got together some of the best teachers and exponents of that tradition. People recognised what we were doing as authentic and from then on the summer school gained a reputation for authenticity, our growth was gradual rather than phenomenal and we’ve come from the sixty or eighty students at the beginning to a thousand plus nowadays”.

One noticeable change to the annual Miltown Malbay event is the growing amount of nationalities coming to attend. “We usually have very regular attenders from Western Europe, countries like France, Scandinavian countries, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Italy and Spain very regularly, we also have a reg-

ular influx from the United Kingdom, from North America, the US and Canada but in later years over the last decade or so, we seem to be attracting quite a number of people from Japan, particularly from Tokyo and that is due to the fact that there is branches of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Tokyo

and other major Japanese cities, we’re attributing the influx of Japanese visitors to that.

“We’ve also built up connections in Moscow and Romania, there are Romanians coming to the summer school, people coming from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Russia pretty continuously since 2012, we

have an exchange programme with Romania. We had students that came last year, performed at the summer school and some of them are coming again this year who will take part in the classes and participate in some of the recitals and concerts playing their own ethnic music”.

This year there is the unique situation in that it will clash, for one day only mind, with a major sporting event taking place just over 12 kilometres away, namely The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. “I don’t think it’s going to have any affect because the Willie Clancy Summer School starts on the 6th of July, the Saturday and the golf ends on the 7th so the only overlap will be that weekend, the 6th and 7th. I don’t see it having any impact, I’m sure there are loads of musicians who play golf and are delighted to do so, there might be some of them down earlier before the summer school starts just to get a look at the golf competition, I don’t think there is any impact. We have been marketing in our usual way by promoting the summer school and I’m sure if people know the summer school is on, those that are interested in music and want to see what it is like I’m sure they’re going to stay on anyway.

Hughes continued, "We have a new community centre in Miltown Malbay which the local community are very proud of, it will be

opening with the summer school next week and it will be a great asset to the town and the surrounding communities."

He maintained the summer school has held “a major role” in boosting the profile of Irish musicians by launching their CDs and books plus assisting with various research gone into the genre by different academics.

This year, Harry is proud that they will paying tribute to “two significant Clare musicians” in Tony McMahon who worked as a producer and presenter with RTÉ and John Kelly, a gifted fiddler and concertina player.

Each year Willie Clancy Week brings great enjoyment to Miltown Malbay but it also helps to sustain jobs in the West Clare town.

“It’s agreed that the annual Willie Clancy School gives a very important and necessary financial injection into the local economy and this has been true for many years, it is still the case particularly in more recent years certain businesses have shut down in the town, factories that were once there in the '70s and '80s are no longer there and the tourist trade has created employment in this area and it has created very solid employment and the Willie Clancy Summer School is part of this scene, therefore the Willie Clancy Summer School contributes largely and in a very significant way to the local economy”.

Music & dance at Armada Hotel T HE Armada in Spanish Point is all set for its annual Festival of Music & Dancing during Willie Clancy Week from 5th to 14th July 2019.

The 10-day programme of set dancing sessions and country music dancing coincides with Willie Clancy Week in nearby Miltown Malbay, the hometown of the late Piper Willie Clancy.

Always a popular event, and while regarded as a social and networking opportunity, the battle for supremacy is never far from the golfers’ minds as they get into full flow on the day.

The team representing Career Decisions, comprising Paudie Fitzmaurice, Tim Crowe, Mike Casey and Jodi O’Connor emerged as overall winners with a score of 93 points, taking home 4 pairs of return flights from Shannon Airport. They were followed in second place by Atlantic Aviation Group team 2 (92 points), who claimed a 4-ball in Trump International Golf Links and Hotel, Doonbeg. REVIEW in the make up of Shannon Group’s PLC has been sought by elected representatives in Co Clare.

Fianna Fáil councillor, Pat Daly at last Monday’s adjourned June meeting of Clare County Council criticised Shannon Group for rejecting an application from Pat Dowling, Chief Executive of the local authority to sit on the board as a Council representative. “It is disgraceful that Clare County Council are not associated with the Board of Shannon Airport. Clare County Council is the biggest working body in the county and it is not represented on the board which is a bloody disgrace”.

Cllr Gerry Flynn who was previously backed by fellow councillors to seek a position on the Board as their representative stood aside in favour of Dowling’s bid. The Independent backed the proposal from Cllr Daly to have the Chief Executive appointed to Shannon Group’s Board. “We should write to the Minister, he is very elusive and gets very sea sick when he gets outside of Dublin. We should unanimously support the request from Cllr Daly to have the Chief Executive appointed to the board”.

Their views were endorsed by Cllr Pat Hayes who maintained there is “a crisis at Shannon Airport” with significant funding being allocated to Waterford Airport and Knock Airport. “It is an utter disgrace,” the Fianna Fáil representative stated.

In a statement to The Clare Echo, Independent TD, Dr. Michael Harty declared that in light of “falling passenger numbers, the fast turnover of Chief Executives and the

continued grounding of Boeing 737 Max planes,” a review of the Board responsible for the Airport was urgently needed.

“Against the trend, Shannon’s passenger number fell in the first quarter of this year.

Dublin rose 7.3%, Cork by 10.7%, Knock by 8.6% while Shannon fell by 2.6%. This is a cause of great concern in the mid-west.

Since it became independent from the Dublin Airport Authority, Shannon has had two Chief Executives in the last six years. The first left after three years, the second is now leaving and the Airport must now seek a new CEO”.

Harty continued, “There is a perception in the mid-west that Shane Ross as Minister for Transport & Tourism doesn’t care about Shannon, won’t visit the Airport and is allowing things to drift. From my conversations with him, I don’t believe this to be the case but it would be helpful if he would visit Shannon and have discussions with local stakeholders. The difficulties facing Shannon must be seen in the wider context of the Clare economy and indeed of the midwest. We have lost the Roche pharma plant in Clarecastle. Worry does not begin to convey the depth of feeling in West Clare about the future of Moneypoint Power Station and now a growing concern that all is not well at Shannon Airport. The Government needs to get a grip on the situation,”the Clare TD concluded.

Currently, Shannon Group’s board consists of Chairperson Rose Hynes, outgoing Chief Executive Matthew Thomas, public policy consultant Kathyrn O’Leary Higgins, Managing Director of Clare FM and Tipp FM Liam O’Shea, Aer Cap Ireland LTD CEO Tom Kelly, employee representatives Kevin McCarthy and Linda Tynne, former Group Editor in chief of Independent News and Media Stephen Rae and Ambrose Loughlin an ex partner of Irish law firm McCann FitzGerald.

ITH Wimbledon just around the corner many of us remember hot summer days spent indoors in front of the telly, unable to tear ourselves away from some battle or other playing out on Centre Court.

Such is the power of the spectacle that we then head off to the nearest court and believe we can replicate exactly what we’ve seen on the lush lawns of SW19. Tennis has always been a popular sport and Ennis has had a club since 1888. It is a game you can take up an any age and play at any level. It can be as sociable or competitive as you’d like to make it. Many, many people continue to play into their 70s and even 80s. There are quite a few studies that illustrate the benefits of playing tennis particularly in terms of cardiovascular health.

Ennis is fortunate to have a lovely club in the middle of town with 5 tennis courts and 2 badminton courts. Most people are surprised to hear we play all year round, with competition and internal leagues running throughout the year. We have regular weekly sessions that cater for all levels and two coaches who can help with whatever your aims and ambitions for the game might be.

Ann-Marie’s camp is taking place from 12th-16th August so there is plenty to choose from this Summer.

SOUTH OF IRELAND EVENT AT LIMERICK LAWN TENNIS CLUB Ennis were well represented in seven out of 30 finals in 142nd Senior South of Ireland in Limerick Lawn Tennis Club last weekend.

First home to victory was Seamus Enright, who, after a 15 month sabbatical rocked up and won MS6 followed by Nick Lester & his partner winning XD4. Shauna Woods & Dave Enright both put in a massive effort in the WS5 & MS4 respectively but it wasn’t to be on the day.

Next up were finalists Róisín Moore & Ciaran O’Brien in their first ever XD1 final who went out in a valiant effort against the number one seeds.

Finally finalist Noel Gavin & Partner XD3 took it to a three setter in a nail biting finish well done to all!

CEARA LOOKING TO KICKSTART ALBUM DEBUT

C

ONNEMARA singer and visual artist Ceara Conway is launching a kickstarter fundraising campaign to raise funds to record and release her first album CAOIN. Produced by Clare man Jack Talty, it will be an album of traditional and contemporary laments from all over the world.

Jack Talty, a renowned musician and the producer of Raelach Records, is part of an eclectic team of prolific contemporary musicians on board who will work with Ceara on developing unique contemporary arrangements for each song.

The album will feature Nick Roth, Tommy Hayes, Mattu Noone, Francesco Turissi

and Liam Conway , Niall Ni Lochlainn. The album will include several traditional sean nós as laments from Lebanon, Africa, Georgia and Portugal.

Since 2013 Ceara Conway has been performing and using traditional songs as way to explores subject matters such as exile and migration her public art commissions. She is currently composing a new vocal performance commission for Galway University Hospital.

Some of her recent performances include the Irish Embassy in Paris with the National Gallery of Ireland, a solo performance for Jean Claude Junkner at Dublin Castle, the Barbican, (London), the Edinburgh Fridge Festival, Poetry Ireland and for the Mountains to Sea Festival with Caoimhín O Raghallaigh (Gloaming) & Doireann Ni Ghríofa. Upcoming performances include a Poetry Ireland event with Olivia O Leary, Orlaith Ni Garbhaith in Cork in July/2019 and the Pocahotas Opera House in West Virginia.

2019 MUNSTER FLEADH LAUNCH The 2019 Munster Fleadh events program is set to be launched on Saturday next in Ennis town.

A group in excess of 30 young musicians from the Craobh na Coradh Comhaltas branch will assemble at 2.30pm at the O’Connell square with their teachers Mary and Denis Liddy to offer a sample of what’s in store for the week of July 14th to the 22nd.

This year’s Munster Fleadh will be the last of four major Fleadhs held in Ennis in a short space of four years. This could be the last hurrah for some time and the organizing committee are aiming to make it a major success and have adopted the slogan “A Fleadh for Everyone” Over recent years the focus of the Fleadh was generally on competitions but since the 2016 All Ireland Fleadh, the Ennis committee have strived

HIS year The Kilkee Playwright Festival is delighted to announce that Aindrias de Staic will be performing an awarding winning double bill in Cultúrlann Sweeney Theatre, that weaves storytelling, comedy and fiddle.

Come along at 7pm and catch The Man from Moogaga, the one man musical comedy about growing up in rural Ireland where music, friendship football and magic are the currency. Winner of the 2018 Celtic Media Awards for Best Radio Comedy, The Man from Moogaga sees de Staic in full seanachaí mode, using his exquisite fiddle playing and mastery of a loop pedal to embellish the narrative. The result is a riotous affair, which celebrates the rhythms of small-town life, taking inspiration from Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, and from Irish traditions of storytelling and music.

At 8.30 pm de Staic performs Around the World of 80 Quid, this autobiographical musical comedy has collected multiple awards and is not to be missed. Around the World on 80 Quid recounts the journey of an Irish fiddle player as he wanders across the globe encountering much craic and many musical genres with some trouble and strife

to develop the festive aspects of the fleadh and to bring the music and the craic into the town and onto the streets of Ennis. Munster fleadh 2019 will offer more free entertainment and free events than any provincial fleadh has ever offered.

The events coordinator Mary Liddy said the fleadh will have a very particular emphasis on events for families and visitors. The 2019 Gig Rig will run much earlier in the evenings with some great shows featuring music and dancing including Celtic Steps, Trad on the Prom, Open air ceili as well as a number of top class ceili bands and Comhaltas Seisiún groups from around the country under the lively direction of Oliver O’Connell who will be undertaking the task of MC for the weekend. The street session competition which is managed by John Hanrahan will also run over the weekend of the 19th to the 21st and already groups of musicians and dancers, young and old are getting their act together to compete in this fun competition.

There are numerous free events during the week including the Frank Custy morning Seisiún from

But behind the laughs and music is the story of a man deep in the grip of alcoholism and drug abuse, and his eventual triumph against them. A mixture of traditional Irish storytelling, music and stand-up, de Staic enlivens his traveller’s tales with poetry and, according to where he is supposed to be in the world at any given moment, Irish, Italian, Greek and gypsy music, jazz violin and Australian convict songs.

The Festival is supported by Clare Arts office and as is the custom this community festival will be running a series of playwright workshops in September. Aindraid de Staic will be one of the workshop leaders. The workshops will culminate in work in progress staged in Kilkee in October. Fleadh PRO Therese McInerney said that Ennis has proved itself to be Ireland’s trad capital and the leading town in Ireland to host a fleadh. She said the organizing committee are very grateful to the traders and businesses in the town and the people of Clare for their support over the past number of years. She said that if this is the last big fleadh of this decade, then we intend to go out with a bang and run a fleadh that will be talked about for years to come.

Fleadh chairman Joe Arkins said that Clare Co. Council has been very supportive of the All-Irelands and the Munster Fleadhanna and he also paid tribute to the local Gardai and emergency services for their support. Fleadh secretary, Frank Whelan paid tribute to the businesses in the town who have embraced the fleadh and are partaking in a fleadh window display competition. He noted that the pubs are putting together a free session trail with up to 150 gigs over the week.

A HUG A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY

‘H

UGGIE’ is the nickname I often call each of my two daughters, Mia and Sophie.

Every time I meet them, before ever a word is spoken, I know they are glad to see me and that they care about me. Why? Because of their warm hug! For me, one of the ways I sense God or become aware of His presence in my life is through other people. Hugging is part of that awareness. To me genuine hugs spell love, compassion, friendship, generosity, kindness, warmth, reliability, patience and real-love, God’s- Love. ‘God’s love’ is not just romantic love, it’s much more than that, it is a never-ending series of positive, creative, affirming, loving, caring, challenging, forgiving, healing and protecting feelings and actions whose purposes are to promote our sense of well-being for ourselves and others and helps us to be aware of how God feels lovingly and warmly towards us.

Hugs A hug is a part of that purpose and is a powerful means of communication. It is made up, not only of parted arms, but also of eyes, which sparkle or weep, eyes, which are full of tenderness, acceptance, humour, forgiveness, love, caring, kindness and compassion. Many people speak the language of hugs, especially children. I remember the hugs from orphaned and abandoned children in Africa recently and also the many I worked for and with in many parts of Africa and Asia and Eastern Europe over the years and the unspoken words of love and appreciation in their hugs is a memory I will never forget.

Hugs transform the faces of all people, giving them charm, grace and a beautiful radiance. Such hugs portray the presence of love.

They pour into others a portion of that love. Love changes people and it encourages them. So let us remember that love comes from God and that ‘God’s Love’, similarly, pours courage and strength

into us.

Research shows that hugging is extremely effective at healing sickness, disease, loneliness, depression, anxiety and stress. Research shows a proper deep hug, where the hearts are pressing together, can benefit you in these ways: 1. The nurturing touch of a hug builds trust and a sense of safety.

This helps with open and honest communication. 2. Hugs can instantly boost oxytocin levels, which heal feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger. 3. Holding a hug for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness. 4. Hugs strengthen the immune system.

The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates activates the Solar Plexus Chakra which keep you healthy and disease free. 5. Hugging boosts self-esteem.

From the time we’re born our family’s touch shows us that we’re loved and special. The cuddles we received from our Mom and Dad while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level, and hugs remind us at a somatic level of that. Hugs, therefore, connect us to our ability to self love. 6. Hugging relaxes muscles. Hugs release tension in the body. Hugs can take away pain; they soothe aches by increasing circulation into the soft tissues. 7.

Hugs balance out the nervous system. The galvanic skin response of someone receiving and giving a hug shows a change in skin conductance. 8. Hugs teach us how to give and receive. There is equal value in receiving and being receptive to warmth, as to giving and sharing. Hugs educate us how love flows both ways. 9. Hugs are so much like meditation and laughter. They teach us to let go and be present in the moment. They encourage us to flow with the energy

of life. Hugs get you out of your circular thinking patterns and connect you with your heart and your feelings and your breath. 10.

The energy exchange between the people hugging is an investment in the relationship. It encourages empathy and understanding.

And, it’s synergistic, which means the whole is more than the sum of its parts: 1+1 = 3 or more! This synergy is more likely to result in win-win outcomes.

But really we don’t need researchers to convince us that hugging can help protect against illness, cure depression and stress, strengthen family relationships and even help us sleep without

tablets. “Hugging is an excellent tonic,” said Dr. Harold Voth, “It breathes new life into a tired body and makes you feel younger and more vibrant. In the home, daily hugging will strengthen relationships and significantly reduce friction.” There is a saying that goes, ‘A hug costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive it, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it lasts forever. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad and it is nature’s best antidote for trouble, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a hug.

Give them one of yours, as no one needs a hug so much as he or she who has no more to give.’ A hug

is a wonderful thing. It’s a marvelous gift to share. It’s a grand way to say; “I care. I love you. I need you.” A hug communicates support, security, affection, unity, friendship and belonging. A hug shows compassion, brings delight, charms the senses and touches the soul. A genuine hug gives friendship, eases pain, reduces stress, cures depression, induces sleep and rejuvenates the heart. Another prayer that my Nana Scully kept in her prayer book when she was alive reads, ‘Hugging is infectious, you catch it like the flu, when someone hugged me today, I started hugging too. A single hug, just like mine could travel round the earth. So if you feel a hug is needed, give it, don’t leave it undetected. Let’s start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected!’

Hugs say it all A poem by one of my favourite poet’s, Erin Casey, called ‘A hug says it all’, might help summarise my thought this week and goes as follows, “A hug, Makes my cold body warm, and calms my heart during a storm. A hug, Silences the screaming thoughts in my head and speaks words that cannot be said. A hug, Adds love and joy to moments of thrill. It’s perfect for celebrating after climbing a hill. A hug, Reminds me that through life I walk not alone. As I am held, muscle and bone. A hug, Transfers energy from one person to the next. It is amazing to see its positive effects.

A hug, Helps me on life’s journey and path. But remember it takes at least two to hug. Do the maths. A hug, Is the perfect example of our need for each other. For we are all sister and brother. A hug, Demonstrates the power of a team. Especially when it feels we are walking upstream. A hug, Symbolizes how we were built for community and love. That’s how He wanted it – the big guy above. A hug, Relaxes the soul so we know it will be okay.

Without there even being words to say. A hug, Goes a million miles to Heal the pain, Ease the strain, Release the blame, Remove the shame, Say I love you, Help us to get through. A hug, Most of all, Breaks down the wall that keeps me from knowing you. After all We are both beautiful that is true.

You might find that you should hug more often and that the power of a hug will do wonders for you and for others. No matter whether you’re the sender or receiver, hugs touch your inner being and soul.

From friends, to family, to loved ones, to neighbours to those in need; a hug warms the cockles of the heart and soul. A hug is truly amazing. It brings blessings to those who give and joy to those who receive. Hugs are one of the reasons God gave us arms. So, stretch out your arms to someone this week, especially to those in need. Reach out to those you love. It will warm the heart of the giver and give light to the soul of the recipient. Reach out to your neighbor. It will show that you care. Reach out to someone in need. It will show that you are responsible. Reach out to the world.

It will show God that you care for His creation. A genuine hug is a light in the window of the soul, indicating that the heart is at home.

God gave us arms to hug so that we would see that the world needs that aura to lighten the darkness of iniquity and inequality that we live in today. A day without a hug is a day wasted. It can penetrate the soul and release good into the world. It can make friends of strangers. It can bring friends closer together. It can bridge the generation gap. It can fill the heart with love. Give someone a genuine hug this week and if you see me, my arms are always open for one, for God knows we all need one!! Let’s start a hugging epidemic!! And remember a Hug a Day keeps the Doctor away!!!

Fun-filled day lined up as Regatta celebrates 10th year in operation STUART HOLLY

HE Clarecastle Regatta is celebrating its 10th year this weekend, with 2,000 people set to descend on the historic village for one of the county’s biggest family fun days of the year.

Having grown steadily under the stewardship of its chief organisers, namely Donal Carey and Fergal Griffin, the Clarecastle Regatta is now a strong fixture on the calendar for people of the proud parish. With an array of activities taking place on the day, families from across the county are expected to attend. The event takes place at Clarecastle’s quay, which has become a hive of activity in recent years between the regatta, local currach club and its growth in popularity as a local beauty spot worth visiting.

Clarecastle Regatta certainly lives up to its own tagline ‘fun for all the family’. Included in the activities list (take a deep breathe) is

Zorbs, stand-up paddle boarding, a raft race, soccer darts, a circus workshop, petting zoo, bouncy castle, pony rides, clay pigeon shoot, live music and barbecue, a dog show, boat trips and kayaking, a singing competition, vintage cars, long puck and ‘hanging tough’.

It’s all listed in the poster but well worth listing again to emphasise that the organisers of this event go above and beyond to make this an enjoyable day for all visitors.

“This is the 10th year,” says Fergal Griffin, admitting that celebrating the milestone year has been low key. “I’ve been involved nine years. It started off the first year as a fundraising event for the GAA club. The curragh club was established 10 years ago as well and they decided to relaunch the Clarecastle Regatta which used to be a prominent feature in Clarecastle about 30 years ago. So it started as a fundraising event and it spread from that into just to being more of a family day and it’s grown a bit every year.

“This was the main regatta for Clarecastle Currach Club, their competition day. But as it grew, the water became more used and

busier and the Curragh Club found it difficult to have their regatta on the same day so the Currach Club now has their regatta competition day on another day, so this is just a fun day now. There are still a few fun currach races on the day.”

Fergal continued that every year the organising committee tries to inject some fresh fun into proceedings. In recent years,

the ‘slippery pole’ saw contestants try to grab a flag at the end of a greased up pole, before plummeting into the River Fergus. This year, that will be replaced by an event made famous by Ireland’s Fittest Family. “We’re trying to do more stuff in the water like the kayaks, SUPs coming on board. Where we had the slippery pole before, we’re going with the hanging tough now this year, some-

thing like what you see on the Fittest Family.

We’ll probably have some prizes, we’ll set up a couple of different age groups.”

Of course it’s not all high-level and energetic activities; there are also the market stalls for the grown-ups to browse, which have grown in popularity over the last few years. Mr Griffin explains that while it began as a fundraising event, these days it is first and foremost about bringing the community together for a day of enjoyment, while some local clubs and organisations do benefit from the event, such as Clarecastle Tidy Towns, Clarecastle Men’s Shed, Clarecastle Community Development, and the local gun club .

“We’re expecting between 1,500 and 2,000 people and it’s all about family these days, so any money that is raised goes to local clubs and charities.”

Fergal also moved to thank those who have come on board in recent years to help with the organising of the event, which has been in motion since February with the final touches being put together with just two days to go.

Being the biggest community event to happen in Clarecastle every year - it’s certainly the highlight for families, as Fergal says “especially for families, and those who maybe aren’t involved in the GAA. It’s great for peo-

ple who are new to the village, it’s something everyone enjoys. A lot of people wouldn’t really realise the quay is there sometimes, you might see it passing but you wouldn’t realise what it is. You often get people saying they didn’t realise it was here and it’s a lovely area, and it attracts people as it’s a nice area for people to go for walks.”

Fergal added that this offers a great opportunity for Clarecastle to showcase all that’s great about the village. “The Tidy Towns have done tremendous work over a number of years but recently they’ve really revamped the village. They’ve got rid of all the ESB wires and redid all the paths and they’ve just recently got a lot of the older buildings painted. Obviously every year they’re working on the flowers and keeping it as tidy as possible but this year they’ve done huge work which is great, and it will be great to showcase the village on regatta day and we hope that people will come from around to see the village and what it has to offer.”

With the sun expected to shine, what better way to enjoy family time than at Clarecastle Regatta? Entry is free however donations at the gate are welcome, while costs are kept to a minimum across all attractions.

The Clarecastle Regatta takes place this Saturday, June 29, from 2pm.

Green Flag delight at Clarecastle NS

N AWARDS Ceremony was held at Clarecastle National School on Monday, June 24th.

The ceremony was held to celebrate the school’s success in being awarded its sixth Green School’s Flag from An Taisce for Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste, the Plaque of STEM Award from Science Foundation Ireland which acknowledges the school’s engagement in STEM activities, winning the Cumann na mBunscol Mini Sevens Camogie Final and being placed second in the Munster Hurling Skills Competition.

The School Choir and Trad Group performed at the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Third Class children took part in Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles initiative and were awarded one of the six top prizes of the ‘Best Online Logbook’ in the competition.

Day Care Centre hits 20 years

HIS August will mark twenty years since the opening of Clarecastle Day Care Centre, a facility that has welcomed thousands of people within the county through its doors in two decades.

Mary Morrissey is Chairperson of the Day Care Centre and one of the co-founders. The opening followed years of planning, fundraising and hard work by the dedicated committee, she explained her reasons for getting involved. “It was while I was looking after my mother that I realised you couldn’t get a break, I did a bit of research and I found a lot of elderly people were very neglected, apart from being lonely and isolated, some of them were in a not so good state so I said to myself ‘God this is dreadful’, especially for a generation that had done so much for this country”.

“We decided we were going to build a Day Care Centre for Clarecastle but because of the lack of services and the amount of people we decided to build a Day Care Centre for a ten mile radius, that took in Ennis and all the other areas,” the Sixmilebridge native reflected.

Now it offers a wide range of services including; a dementia specific daycare unit, personal care, blood pressure checks, wound dressing, medications, injections, health promotion, physio-

therapy, chiropody and numerous leisure activities. From Monday to Friday, the centre is built to look after sixty people a day, coming from sixteen different parishes all within a ten mile radius of Clarecastle.

Though it’s users have increased over the year, funding has been a constant issue according to Mary. “The Alzheimer’s is what started it, my mother had dementia and we decided to build an Alzheimer’s unit, that unit my heart is broken over it because the health board are not providing the running costs for it, even though there is over 900 with Alzheimer’s in our catchment area, we have to fundraise all the time, we have a charity shop and we’re working there every weekend, I work there every Saturday, we do it in turns and we’re doing that for about fifteen years”.

As Chairperson of the group responsible for the Day Care Centre, Morrissey praised Clare County Council for their assistance when it came to purchasing the site for the Alzheimer’s unit. “The

Alzheimer’s unit is state of the art, it has it’s own garden, it’s built especially for them and we don’t get any funding for it and that is heart breaking”.

“We had to pay the bus ourselves, we have to look after the upkeep of the Day Care centre, after twenty years something needs replacing, we’re finding it hard, the budget is not enough to do the work we’re doing. When you think of the shortage of nurses and we can provide the services they need, the only thing we haven’t got are beds. Very few of them need to go to hospital because of the care they get in the Centre, we have wonderful nurses and care workers, they are all dedicated,” she added.

A budget from the Health Board ensures the doors stay open but Mary highlighted “it’s not enough”. Support from local communities and organisations has been more plentiful as they realise the value of the service provided. “A lot of people have to go to work and they wouldn’t have the time, it keeps them healthy, the nurses will spot if there is anything wrong with

them, they are well nourished with tea and scones when they come in, a three course dinner and tea then again before they go home. Everything that they need is provided, when they go home all they need is the care worker to look after them and put them to bed”.

For many opting to go to the Day Care Centre to avail of their social activities such as music, dancing, singing, library, crosswords, puzzles and board games may be pondered upon but Mary declared once they come in the doors they don’t regret it, such is the offering that she claimed those have visited the Centre regularly in it’s twenty years have not had to visit a doctor.

“People that are living alone or with family are always welcome to the Day Care Centre, if they just want to come and see what we have and talk to us. I can tell you they might be reluctant the first day but once they get in they love it, they are meeting their own people from their own area, we’ve all the different parishes that come in five days a week so they meet other people they wouldn’t normally meet during the day.

They are a lovely generation because they are so grateful for everything that is done for them, I’d love to be able to collect them all and bring them in. We would love referrals or their carers to bring them in and we’d look after them”.

Murphy gets most appointments

LARECASTLE councillor, Paul Murphy will sit on the most boards and committees of all twenty eight elected members of Clare County Council for the next five years.

Negotiations have taken place between the various political groupings on the local authority with all positions ratified during the June meetings at County Council and Municipal District level in recent weeks.

Fine Gael’s Paul Murphy will sit on nine different bodies such as the Limerick Clare Education Training Board, Hunt Museum Trust, Local Traveller Accommodation Advisory Committee, Twinning Committee, Standing Orders Sub-Committee, Memorial Committee, Promote Ennis, Joint Policing Committee plus one of the local authority’s Strategic Policy Committees.

However only his post with the LCETB will result in payment.

Clarecastle development an opportunity to live in ‘a very inclusive society’

HE final stage of Creggaun na Hilla has just been launched, with huge interest already in the 24 houses under construction.

Selling agent Helen Gallery explained that this is the sixth and final phase of the development which has been released over a threeyear period, with more than 130 closings already being made.

Despite the relatively large volume of house, Helen Gallery says that each development is within its own area with large, open green area and little tight-knit communities are already forming.

“It’s very nicely done, the density would be very low,” explains Helen. In the final phase there are 24 houses, a mix of 3-bed bungalows, 3-bed semi-detached, four-bed linked and a couple of four-bed detached.

Helen adds that the estate has in particular attracted young families starting out, and single people while the bungalows have attracted people whose housing needs have changed as they enter a different chapter in their lives. “They’re lovely little communities, the bungalows are done in little developments of 10, it’s working out extremely well.”

Helen adds that this is the only development in Clare of this scale since Clare began to see signs of economic recovery after the downturn. However, Helen says she hasn’t been surprised by the

demend for buyers in the development, which is under construction by Martin Fitzgibbon Construction. “You’re catering for the various different markets and it’s worked well - the proof of the pudding is that it’s friends of friends coming back to buy and members of the same families.

“They’re fine, fine houses and they’re well built.

For a first-time buyer, they’re purchasing a fully finished house. After buying a house they don’t have to come in and pay for tiling, or flooring or a kitchen - it’s all included in the price. The ‘help to buy scheme’ has also really helped first time buyer, saving five per cent.

“That scheme is supposed to end this year.

We’ll have to wait for the budget but the indications from the Government are that it will finish out this year.”

She added that Clarecastle is proving a very attractive prospect for first time buyers due to its location and strong community.

“It’s the fastest growing village in Ireland, there’s no doubt about it. It’s got a fabulous national school that’s been extended and renovated, it’s fabulous. It has a chemist, doctors, coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, it has the church, everything on your doorstep and right beside the interchange so you can head off to Limerick, Galway, Shannon, wherever you need to go. There’s a great

GAA club there as well, they’re very inclusive.

They held meetings to try and encourage all new children to join the club, it’s a very inclusive society.”

Repurposing Moneypoint could open door to future

S

YMBOLISM is so important in politics.

Symbols be they logos, flags, badges or similar, give people a sense of shared identity; something to buy into. Modern politics is as much about brand marketing as it is about policy initiatives. But occasionally, the two collide and there is a flurry of activity that’s not seen all too often. We are currently at one of those points. The “Green Wave” may have benefitted that party this time, but it was as much a warning shot to the rest of the parties to develop better green policies and take their environmental commitment seriously.

Hence, we recently saw photos of Cabinet Ministers on a hybrid-bus (one of only three in public ownership in the State) as well as photocalls for new environmental initiatives, many of which have been dug out of already existing policies. However, rather than chastise the Government for their rush to be seen as green, I for one welcome it; provided of course they’re serious about following through on their new-found climate advocate credentials.

All this comes at a time that residents of West Clare become increasingly worried about the future of Moneypoint with morale at the Killimer power generation facility apparently in the dumps.

We do, as a society, need to move away from burning fossil fuels. Almost everyone accepts this. Not only is there an environmental cost to burning coal in West Clare for energy, but there’s the very real monetary cost given the fact that we’re importing the coal form abroad. This even though Ireland has among the greatest potential for renewable energy in the world.

It’s true, that the country has a unique position for wind and wave power, yet we’re only using a small fraction of the potential. Offshore wind surely needs more investment if we’re to finally ditch fossil fuels. “But what about Moneypoint?”, I hear people say. People have very real fears

that in the great green future that facilities like Moneypoint, and the hundreds of direct and indirect jobs that go with it, will be lost. However, as we well know, the wind doesn’t always blow and certainly not always hard enough to generate the power needs of the country.

This is where Clare can really step up to the plate and count ourselves as trail blazers of the environmental agenda. By closing the coal burning facility, it could open the door for the plant to be converted into a bio-mass fuelled power plant. A lot of the infrastructure already in place would be compatible for such a switch around and the investment would safeguard hundreds of jobs for decades to come. Not only would there be a jobs benefit to the economy at the plant, but the production of the bio-mass in question would also lead to a major jobs boost throughout the country. We’d also stop importing large amounts of foreign coal, again further enhancing the economic argument for the conversion.

An added environmental argument is that, should we in Ireland aim to grow enough fuel for such a plant, a lot of land would have to change designation from dairy to arable or forestry. This in turn would reduce the amount of methane production from our agricultural industry.

Whereas, across the world, biomass is seen as less favourable due to the amount of space required to grow and store the fuel, as well as the cost of harnessing it, these are mitigated here due to the fact that we’re among the least densely populated countries in the Western World, the cost of production is offset from the importing of fuels we currently have to undertake and we have the existing infrastructure to power from a rural setting to the high-demand urban centres. The reality is either we close the plant, we convert it to biomass, or we convert it to a nuclear power plant. The latter I’m assuming would lead to huge protest,

even though nuclear power has been proven to be among the safest energy production methods in recent history, even with certain high-profile accidents considered. That said, no Irish Government is going to try build a nuclear power plant given the public’s, in my opinion, misguided mood towards such power generation.

Yes the symbol of thousands of people across the country going to the polls to vote Green sent a message.

However, will those people hold their resolve in that symbolism once carbon taxes take effect, once their car tax goes through the roof and when their general, non-recycling waste collection charge doubles? I hope so, but only if ability to pay is factored in.

If we are to change people’s mannerisms for the future and bring about a new age of ‘green politics’, we need to live in a green society too.

Politicians cannot wave a magic wand and bring down pollution and reduce carbon emissions on their own.

People’s individual actions need to change too. Stop driving your kids the 500m to school or the 250m to the shops. Stop buying pre-pealed oranges or pre-cut carrots in plastic packaging. Stop leaving the lights and appliances on unnecessarily. Start segregating your waste properly. Plug out the TV occasionally and go for a walk in our gorgeous country’s natural beauty.

And instead of the digital edition of The Clare Echo, read the paper one that’s waiting to be picked up in your local shop. It’s the little things that make all the difference.

Don’t give politicians the excuse that the public weren’t willing to play our part. Otherwise, the green wave will be a future symbol… one of how lazy and greedy people can be instead of our shared resolve to be better for all our children’s sake.

HIS year we take a look at the tireless and compassionate efforts of Sister Mary Nicholas Griffey for the deaf and blind. In addition to this we have a controversial planning dispute in Ennis in 1987 leading all the way to the High Courts as well as a lesser know truth about the infamous ‘Fairytale of New York’, which ties it ambiguously to our wonderful County Clare. Shall we begin….

LEGACY OF SISTER MARY NICHOLAS GRIFFEY Honorary titles come and go. We attribute higher value to some rather than others. It’s certainly something that lies in the subjective realm. However, ‘Clare Person of the Year’ is an award that doesn’t sit lightly within the county. It is the cornerstone of community and in 1987, the honour was bestowed upon Sister Mary Nicholas Griffey of Ennis.

Born on June 15, 1916 Sister Griffey’s life of devotion began in the Sisters of Mercy in Ennis and continued on to a Dominican boarding school in Cabra. Astonishingly, Sister Griffey was not permitted to return to her hometown until 1967 following a leniency in religious regulations birthed in the Vatican. These previous restrictions impeded her from returning for any reason, even for her mother’s funeral. Her introduction to the deaf community came about in 1935 when she was introduced to a school untouched by the concern of the local community. The liberation of deaf people became her lifelong purpose, with members of the deaf community being outed and ostracised for their inability to connect with others in everyday life. After training as a primary teacher, Sister Griffey stepped into the role of principal of a school for the deaf in Cabra. She later felt that sign language wasn’t enough and through a great deal of research introduced the skill of oralism or lip reading for the students. Her most notable achievements were UCD’s diploma for teachers of the deaf as well as educating doctors, nurses as well as various health administrators on the needs of those within the deaf community. She passed away in February of 2002, having chosen to retire at St. Joseph’s home for the deaf in Dublin.

A COSTLY EXTENSION IN CORBALLY

“The poorer sections of the community are treated unfairly where civil or quasi-civil matters in law arise”. These were the words of William Moloney who held the position of Clare County Secretary in 1987. Mr Moloney was interviewed following a rather contentious case concerning a man in Corbally who decided to build an extension on his house and failed to abide by the terms of the granted planning permission.

Pat Murphy, who felt his idea to follow through with an extension on his house was something which wouldn’t rouse the local community, termed his own actions as hasty. “I agree that I jumped the gun but the position I was in, I thought everything was okay. I’m very friendly with my neighbours. As it turns out, things went against me and I must suffer the consequences.” Pat incurred a stipulation of 6,000 pounds. A gruelling sum for a husband and father of five who was unemployed at the time.

The Clare County Council wished to make an example out of Pat Murphy for those who dared to grip legal requirements with loose intentions.

FAIRYTALE OF COUNTY CLARE County Clare is infamous for its ballads. Whether it’s the heartfelt ‘My Lovely Rose of Clare’ or the age old ‘Are you right there Michael’, each rendition is powered by a flurry of passion. But did you know that perhaps the most famous Irish tune of all had its origins buried in our beautiful county?

Shane MacGowan of The Pogues told a BBC reporter that ‘The Fairytale of New York’ was originally conceived as the ‘Fairytale of County Clare’ and held this accolade for two years before finally evolving into its iconic final form. The 1987 hit previously revolved around a sailor based in County Clare looking out across the vast Altantic Ocean at the dreamy New York City. With numerous revisions, MacGowan eventually opted to go with more widely know New York as opposed to the quiet coast of County Clare. Who knows how the Christmas hit single would have fared had it been set along the Wild Atlantic Way!

DOONBEG GAA GOES SMOKE FREE Doonbeg Football Club launched their Smoke Free Campaign this week. This launch took place at ShanahanMcNamara Memorial Park.

This initiative is part of Doonbeg’s continuing plan under the National Healthy Clubs Programme. The complete grounds of the club is now smoke free. The club asks all patrons, supporters, mentors and players to respect this new rule as they strive to enhance the experience of all its patrons and members.

LAHINCH FEATURES ON RTE NATIONWIDE RTE Nationwide last night broadcast a special programme from North Clare about the preparations ahead of the Dubai Irish Open golf championship in Lahinch on the 3rd -7th July.

The programme featured many Lahinch businesses including Randaddy’s restaurant, the Lahinch Coast hotel, Vaughan’s lodge, John McCarthy’s Surf school as well as the Lahinch Golf club and the Little Fox restaurant in nearby Ennistymon.

Preparations for the landmark event have stepped up in recent weeks including the installation of purpose-built marquees on both golf courses, road resurfacing and many local businesses painting their premises.

Nationwide presenter Anne Cassin was in Lahinch earlier this week, where she met Lady Captain Helena Tiernan from Lahinch Golf club and John Gleeson, chair of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Committee who told her about the upcoming tournament and the positive effect the event will have on Lahinch.

She also interviewed Brid and John O’Meara, co-owners of the recently refurbished Lahinch Coast Hotel which reopened in March this year. They spoke to Anne about the positive effect the Open has already had on accommodation providers in the area.

More than 90,000 people are expected to visit Lahinch during the week of the Irish Open, while TV coverage is set to reach an audience of 650 million people.

CLARE PRIMARY SCHOOLS COMPETE FROM COUNTY HONOURS The 19th of June saw the 2019 Clare primary schools tennis tournament take place in the Ennis Tennis & Badminton club. It was an action packed day from 9.30 to 3.30 with children from schools around the county taking part. Coach Danny Comerford oversaw the proceedings & the club’s tennis captains were on hand to help umpire & encourage all players. The weather for the most part held out with only few scattered showers, but not enough to dampen spirits or delay play. The morning commenced with a “ fun “doubles to get everyone warmed up followed by the serious business of the day, the defending of the coveted cups! The Mixed Doubles Cup was won by Mia Gavin & Conan Kochhar from the Ennis National school. The Girls Cup went to the panel of girls from Ennis National school, Caoimhe Collins, Aoibhinn O Connell, Mia Gavin, Ruth Nihil, Jennifer O Donnell, Abbie Doyle and Laura Burnett. The boy’s Cup was brought home to St John’s school in Cratloe by Harry & Sam Mulholland after a thrilling final that was brought to a tie break.

RELAY FOR LIFE A HUGE SUCCESS Relay For Life Ennis organisers have moved to thank all those who participated and helped in fundraising efforts after hosting a hugely successful event at the Fairgreen last weekend.

The event, which was supported by Quinn Property Management Ennis, brought together cancer survivors who got VIP treatment for the 24 hours while participants including inspirational survivors carried out a continuous lap of the park over the 24 hour period, while also raising thousands for the Irish Cancer Society.

In a statement by PR & Social Media Chair Elaine Gannon, organisers said, “To the Community of Ennis, Co Clare, ye are just amazing. No words can describe how wonderful our community is and the last 24hrs just showed that we are absolutely overwhelmed once again.

“We did have the child of Prague the last few days before we relayed in Ennis for our 2nd year.. but by God the rain didn’t stop ye! At 6.50am [on Sunday] morning the rain started again and never stopped.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed as the committee of Relay for Life Ennis 2019. Thank You.” Ms Gannon also paid tribute to the teams who “are the heart of Relay”.

While the event was going on, various fun activities were going on including live music, yoga, tae bo, Zumba, pound fitness, ballet, face painting and much more.

The Candle of Hope ceremony at 10:30pm on Saturday night saw the track lined with lit candle bags, each one individually decorated and dedicated to a loved one lost or someone currently on a cancer journey.

Clare FM scoops international award

A

Clare FM documentary, which told the story of Clare’s cave rescue hero Jim Warny, has been recognised as one of the best radio programs in the world over the past

year.

The Rescue is a revealing insight into the remarkable rescue that saw Ennisman Jim join a team of international divers in the unique operation to safely extract twelve boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand. Along with Jim, who was the focus of the documentary, it also included contributions from fellow members of the Irish cave diving community, two other members of the international team who took part in the operation in Thailand, Belgium’s Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Pierre Emmanuel de Bauw, and An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

The programme was produced by Padraic Flaherty and Gavin Grace, and was honoured with a Gold Award at the New York Festivals Radio Awards at this week’s ceremony in Manhattan. The awards attract hundreds of entries from radio stations in almost 40 countries, and the Gold Award is among their highest accolades.

Padraic Flaherty, who is also Clare FM’s Head of Operations, said “We are delighted to receive this award, which is one of the biggest in Clare FM’s near thirty-year history. Only a small fraction of the programmes entered into the New York awards receive Gold, and we are proud to say that The Rescue and Clare

FM now stand alongside the best of work from the likes of the BBC, the Canadian Broadcast Company, Al Jazeera and other entries from Sweden, Germany, the UK, USA and South Korea.”

“Clare FM is the only local radio station in Ireland to receive a trophy of any colour in this year’s New York Festivals Radio Awards.

OBODY wants anything ordinary anymore. Our mums and dads drove around in Cortinas and Renault 4s and Minis and they were quite happy with them, too. Mainstream wasn’t seen as being something of which to be ashamed. That has all changed, though. Now, certainly in the motoring world, what we want — all of us it seems — is premium. Something with leather and an expensive-looking badge, something that supposedly separates us from the hordes (not that there are hordes anymore because everyone’s buying premium, but that’s a debate for another day…).

That’s why Seat has decided to try and spin off its Curpa badge as a fully-fledged brand in its own right. Cupra has been around for a while, a name affixed to various hot versions of the Leon and Ibiza, drawing on the same engines and technology that also power VW GTI and Audi S models.

They’re good cars, these Seat Cupras — fast, fun, and usually much more affordable than their German relatives.

Now, though, Cupra has to stand on its own four wheel. Seat has decided that being an affordable and mildly sporting Spanish brand is no longer enough, and that our obsession with having something posher than them’uns next door means that it has to have its own high-end offering. Doubtless cognisant of how long it took Toyota to establish Lexus as a ground-up premium offering, Seat has decided that its existing

Cupra badge would become a brand.

Curpa, then, will be a Spanish AMG, or a Catalonian BMW M-Sport (take your pick). It will, hopes Seat, become a premium-style offering — still with value in mind — but able to command the kind of prices, and profit margins, that the sporty German models draw in.

Cupra will, in due course, get its own, standalone models, to help separate it from Seat. In fact, at the recent Geneva motor show, we’ve seen the first one — called Formentor, it’s a rakishly handsome SUVcoupe thing, with a 245hp plugin hybrid powertrain.

In the meantime, we’ve got this — the Cupra Ateca. This is badged entirely as a Cupra (you’ll not find a single Seat badge anywhere on it) it is instantly and unendingly recognisable as the same family-friendly SUV that normally comes with a stylised ’S’ badge front and rear. Not that Cupra has been unstinting in its efforts to create some differentiation — our test car seemed at times more bodykit than car, those copper-and-black alloy wheels were certainly distinctive (if rather carrying the whiff of the aftermarket tuning community — something that could also be said of that daft double-pronged badge), and such items as gorgeous high-backed bucket seats, swathed in Alcantara suede, certainly help. It also has that unique double-pronged Cupra badge, which is arguably less successful, looking a bit like a tattoo you might get after one too many shandies on a night out…

It’s still an Ateca, though. That upright shape, the entire interior, the big, useful, boot — all available just across the showroom floor for considerably less cash than the €58,732(!) Seat — sorry, Cupra — is

asking for this one.

Ah, but of course this one does come with an engine you can’t have in a ‘norm’ Ateca. It’s the same 2.0-litre turbo that you’ll find in a VW Golf R and indeed Seat’s own Leon Cupra (which, confusingly, remains a Seat Cupra rather than a Cupra… Probably best just to ignore that) and it’s packing 300hp. Performance is impressive. A 0-100km/h run time of 5.2secs is pretty exciting for a tall, family SUV and the gravelly exhaust note that this engine makes as the revs climb is more than a little reminiscent of the old 1970s Ford Escort BDA rally cars.

The only drawback is that with 400Nm of torque on offer, this mighty turbo petrol is only matching, not exceeding, the torque level of the standard Ateca 2.0-litre 190hp TDI diesel. So, unless you’re really spanking it, and making full (and thirsty) use of the upper reaches of the rev range, this Cupra doesn’t feel all that much quicker than a well specified diesel Ateca.

It does drive very well, though. There is some body roll and lean, of course, and those Pirelli P-Zero tyres do their usual thing of inducing scrubby understeer if you’re a little too optimistic with your cornering speeds, but the Ateca’s naturally sharp steering comes to the fore, and there’s certainly no shortage of grip and traction when the going gets rapid. It’s fast, it’s fluent, and it’s fun.

Cupra has to start somewhere, and starting with the popular Ateca as its base is probably no bad thing. One would think that a lower-slung Leon would be a better fit, and more enjoyable to drive, but the inexorable pull of the SUV market has done its work here. It’s going to be fascinating to see how Cupra turns out for Seat, and if it

can indeed draw buyers away from their GTIs, and maybe even their AMGs. For now, the Cupra Ateca is a decent start.

CROSSING south over the River Shannon last Saturday after an evening spent at Pairc Sean MacDiarmada, I faced into two hours and 10 minutes to savour in the car as myself (and my son) reflected on an impressive win.

With Clare having accounted for Leitrim, I left the ground on a a high - it was the first time in a long while I came away from a 70-minute period of Clare football satisfied.

Lots of boxes were ticked. Clare put up 3-17 in a championship game; they put up 2-12 in a half of football to lead by 11 points; Clare even emptied the bench and got valuable gametime for some panelists. And most importantly, we finally got to see some real positivity from the team.

There are three areas of improvement that have all helped to ignite a flame for Clare, each of which are worth looking at seperately; a) our tactical approach; b) Gary Brennan being freed up to play a more attacking role and c) our four key scorers firing on all cylinders at the same time.

TACTICS ON THE MONEY Positivity is the key word here, because the tactical approach was the biggest contributor to this performance. The gameplay Colm Collins implemented was a continuation of what worked so well in the second half against Kerry in the Munster semi-final. Running at the opposition defence with intensity, breaking off teammate’s shoulders and refusing to settle for keep-ball for the sake of possession. And they worked it to a tee, in perfect conditions on a perfect field. The game was over after 25 minutes and it just showed what could have been against Waterford (who I believe are a step below Leitrim), and certainly Collins might rue a missed opportunity against Kerry, who we really troubled with this style of play in the second half.

As a unit Clare always cover back excellently but at times they can be caught a bit flat on their feet when in possession. A good example of this is Cian O’Dea, a guy who always works hard but who had a habit of giving the ball away a bit cheaply. His distribution was excellent on Saturday and our high-tempo gameplan definitely helped

players like Cian reach their potential. It’s brilliant to see is how slick Clare looked as a unit going forward, especially in the first 35 minutes. Gary Brennan, Conal O’hAinifin, Sean Collins, Cathal O’Connor, Jamie Malone, Eoin Cleary, all running hard at them. People coming off the shoulder at pace, breaking tackles, making an extra 10 or 15 yards, forcing their opponant to pull them down or creating a score for a teammate. What we had seen all year except for the second half against Kerry was them passing the ball along the line, never breaking a tackle, giving it to a man in a static position, pass it to another man who was behind him, never really attacking. It was just keeping possession.

Leitrim was a tricky assignment, having won six league games to be promoted for the first time in two about decades, they were really on a high. It was great to see us continue that gameplan and attitude from the second half against Kerry, and Leitrim couldn’t live with that at all, they were at sixes and sevens. We put 2-12 up in the first half alone and Clare were definitely worth that, and maybe even more.

FREEDOM FOR BRENNAN The arrival of Sean O’Donoghue in the midfield has given Gary Brennan a lease of life - the Clondegad talisman can now slide into the forward line and cause more destruction. That freedom suits him, illustrated when he bagged his goal after drifting into full forward. When he runs at a centre or full back, it’s very hard to stop him and it’s great to see we can expose him to different areas of the field with the strong pairing of Cathal O’Connor and O’Donoghue now marshalling the middle of the park. That freedom that Brennan plays with now is a part of the spark that saw Clare step their game up to another level.

LEADERS ON THE PARK Eoin Cleary coming into a full bill of health has also helped. You could see that Cleary was really back to himself; his pace, fitness and sharpness hadn’t been up to his Championship standards but it was all on full show against Leitrim and proved the class that he has. From long range points to running into the heart of their defence, Leitrim had no answer to him. Thankfully, this has come as great timing for the rest

of the campaign because our four most important scoring players are all going well at a very crucial time in the year. Jamie Malone, I always felt had more in him.

There was a nagging feeling that he drifted out of games at times but his fitness levels and sharpness also looked to be up, with his driving runs capable of splitting open any defence. He produced 1-2 from play, really thriving on this new penatrative style of play. Tubridy and Brennan are pretty much always reliable, but again Brennan’s ability to play with freedom gives Clare an extra edge, I feel. You’re going to need them four men firing going forward because every match gets a step harder.

In fact if I was to be critical of one thing, it’s that these four guys stood out a bit too much. We got one goal from a sub, young Eibhin Courtney, but the rest of our 2-17 came from those four players; Gary (1-3), Jamie (1-2), Tubridy (0-5) and Cleary (0-7).

When you see a 3-17 scoreline you’d have hoped to see a Cathal O’Connor on that scoresheet, a half-back or even a corner back chipping in with a score.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY Tomas O Sé said on the Sunday Game that Clare punch above their weight at times, and I have said in the past that Colm Collins is getting the best out of these guys.

We’ve seen brilliant spells at times, particularly in the second half against Tipperary in the league and against Kerry in the Munster semi-final. In general, it’s 10 or 15 minutes of a purple patch here and there. However on Saturday, it was a full on performance and I don’t believe we were punching above our weight - this is what they’re capable of doing every week. Westmeath will be a different kettle of fish and to come away with a win would be a huge achievement.

Westmeath are in flying form having won Division 3 and this is a genuine 50-50 tie.

However if this system is implemented to good effect, there’s no reason why we can’t go on and get another win. Home advantage is worth a point or two, and I hope that’s not the point or two we fall to. Even if we perform the same way we did the last day, the game will not be over after 35 minutes. Clare must maintain their level and the men who come off the bench will have to do more to match the level of intensity of the guys they’re replacing. That’s how we will exploit Westmeath, and ultimately, I believe defeat them.

Prediction: Clare by 2 points.

WIN was the aim for Clare’s senior footballers when they travelled to Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday, they succeeded in this regard but David Tubridy insisted that they cannot afford to perform like they did in the second half as the qualifier campaign continues.

Clare kicked 3-17 over the hour with Tubridy accounting for five points of this tally. Understandably he was happy with the outcome but he lamented their second half showing which included Leitrim firing six unanswered scores. “We’d a very good first half today, we put up a good scoreline but to concede 17 points is very disappointing and it’s something we have to look at for next week”.

On what led to Colm Collins’ side easing up on the gas, the Doonbeg forward felt it was a drop in intensity and complacency drifting into their game. “I don’t know was it complacency with fellas thinking the game was over, we have to learn from it and keep pushing on whatever lead we have going into a second half, I’m very disappointed with the second half”.

Donovan determined to become a world champ

NNIS’ Paddy Donovan has declared his aspiration is to become a world champion having turned professional last Thursday, writes Páraic McMahon.

A Junior World silver medallist and thirteen time Irish champion, Paddy has put pen to paper on a multi-year professional contract with Bob Arum’s Top Rank. Fellow Irish boxers represented by the US group include Michael Conlan, Carl Frampton and Ryan Burnett.

Speaking following the announcement, Paddy said he was “honoured to sign with Top Rank,” he added, “they are the best in boxing”.

“My goal is to become a world champion, and there is no one better than Top Rank to help me achieve my goal.”

Donovan has been described by boxing pundits in the country as “a slick, stylish southpaw with blistering hand speed and Matrix-like reflexes”.

He has 161 wins as an amateur with a handful of defeats.

From Clancy Park, he competed for Our Lady of Lourdes club in Limerick and had been tipped to represent Ireland in next year’s Olympics which

take place in Tokyo. As well as winning everything at national level in the underage ranks Paddy has twice won the Haringey Box Cup. Paddy’s goal of becoming a World Champion will be boosted by the presence of former middleweight champion of the world, Andy Lee in his corner. The former Olympian who retired last February has been out of the sport since apart from media work, however the Limerick man had decided to return to boxing a full-time capacity as Donovan’s coach and manager.

Lee will split the training between Dublin and Limerick for an “exciting” boxer he has studied for a long time. “My brother trained him when he was 11 years old and won his first Irish title. Then I saw him in the national championships and was blown away, I thought he was outstanding and saw so much potential. I met his dad there and he said there had been a lot of people getting in touch about him turning professional and he asked if I could give him some advice. I said I’d do more than that and that I could put out a few feelers. As soon as I did, everyone was interested and I mean everyone.That was when I got drawn in.”

Andy confirmed they will go to the US and UK for sparring and emphasised there was no need to rush the ex-Ennis CBS student into the ring just yet while Top Rank have confirmed a debut date will be announced shortly.

“In terms of what you’d want in a prospect he has all ingredients and after getting to know him, he has the right character and the right personality which will serve him well in the pro. He’s a bit flashy but I don’t mind that I like that,” he told The Irish Examiner.

“I think we’re looking at around three and a half years before he’s a contender. In year four he will be 24 or 25 and that will be the right time, he will be coming into his peak as a welterweight. For me he has it all, he even has a great name and the blonde hair. He looks like a star in the making.”

LARE’S senior camogie side have picked up their first championship win of the year following a hard fought battle with Meath.

Level entering additional time, Clare survived what would have been a massive setback to put two points on the board and get their first championship win under the management of Ger O’Connell.
