That sinking feeling

Springfield a ‘warzone with water’ PÁRAIC McMAHON paraic@clareecho.ie

LARE residents are living in fear with heavy rainfall causing widespread flooding in parts of the county. Flooding remains a possibility for ten homes in Springfield, Clonlara with up to seventeen houses inaccessible from a local access road. Water continues to be discharged from Parteen Weir by the ESB with 400 cubic metres per second released on Wednesday. Daily meetings have been held by Clare County Council’s Crisis Management team as the situation in South East Clare is monitored. Some families were evacuated from their homes over the weekend with others unable to sleep as they fear the worst. One resident described her fear, “It’s like a warzone here with water”. Another resident commented, “When I pass away, I’m going to go straight to heaven because at the moment I’m in hell”. Parts of Gort are also heavily flooded, in areas this is the fifth time it has happened since 1995. Ballylea is submerged in huge floods with a boat the only means of transport by which the area can be accessed. St Flannan’s College was forced to close on Monday with extensive flooding on the school grounds. Spot flooding has also been reported on roads across Clare.

l James Curley steers the boat while his father Jimmy assesses the damage at Yeats Tower in Gort.
