IDESPREAD joy has been evident following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions but pressure remains on the region’s main hospital with record levels of patients on trolleys recorded on Wednesday. Clare TD, Michael McNamara

(IND) has called for an independent investigation into overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), where a record 111 patients were on trolleys on Wednesday. Addressing Taoiseach Micheál Martin (FF) in the Dáil, McNamara said the exponential growth in trolley numbers at UHL was unlikely to be halted by the introduction of additional beds alone and that consideration should be given to upgrading other hospitals within the UHL

Group. The Taoiseach said he would request the Health Minister and the HSE to review the proposal around the causes of ongoing overcrowding. Meanwhile, the people of Clare basked in the joy of easing restrictions with huge crowds flocking to pubs and nightclubs across the county. “It was like freedom day,” Ennis DJ Trevor White said of the electric atmosphere in the Queens on Saturday night.
