WO males dressed in black with hoods left a woman traumatised after she confronted them at her home in West Clare.

At approximately 3pm on Thursday last, a woman living in Lislanahan, Kilkee upon hearing a noise in the back of her house was confronted by two males dressed in black with hoods over their heads. “They demanded money from her which she gave and they made good their escape. The lady was not physically injured but this was a very traumatic experience for her to have to go through,” Sergeant O’Rourke said.

Meanwhile, three separate attempted robberies in the county were foiled in the past week as homeowners were surprised to find intruders in their homes. The incidents occurred in Kilnamona, Kilmurry McMahon and Killaloe.

“DRAFT mortuary notice for West Clare” has been issued by Clare County Council based on its economic development plans for the area according to Clare’s longest serving elected representative.

For the second Council meeting in succession, Cllr PJ Kelly requested details from the local authority on economic development plans for West Clare relating to villages, towns, rural areas, the Shannon Estuary and Moneypoint.

Director of Economic Development Liam Conneally, who was unable to attend the meeting, in his written reply referred to projects awarded RRDF funding such as Lahinch Seaworld and Town Upgrade project (€2.86m), Loop Head Visitor Attraction (€865,500), Vandeleur Estate, Kilrush (€1.72m) and Doolin Pier Visitor Centre (€465,571) which he maintained would “provide a wider benefit to the rural areas and villages as they further complement the overall tourism product and contribute to the overall cumulative economic benefit”.

Conneally stated the Council was “committed to the implementation of the Strategic Integrated Framework Plan for the Shannon Estuary (SIFP) which identifies both Moneypoint Power Station and Cahercon as Strategic Devel-

opment Areas”. He referred to the allocation of €1.7m from Enterprise Ireland to the development of Cahercon as a Maritime Centre of Excellence, on which the local authority is preparing a detailed analysis of the development proposal.

An unhappy Kelly voiced his disappointment with the response and absence of Mr Conneally. The Lissycasey councillor was critical of Lahinch’s inclusion in the response as it is not situated in West Clare. “There is no response for rural areas or villages and only a vague reference to Shannon Estuary and no reference for future plans at Moneypoint, if this isn’t confusion or lack of commitment I don’t know what it is”.

“I did say there’s a hard border around Dublin and it looks like there’s a harder border around Ennis as far as West Clare is concerned. Fancy terminology and reports are no substitute for hard work or jobs. In my view this is a draft mortuary notice for West Clare, it’s bad for West Clare,” the Fianna Fáil representative cautioned.

Independent councillor Christy Curtin seconded the motion but stated, “I wouldn’t be as pessimistic as my colleague”.

On future plans for Moneypoint, Cllr Kelly warned the Council were talking to “the wrong people”. “If we’re going to have a role as economic developers, we have to have a role, we need a plan and we need to implement it”.

Shannon Airport is 'undermind' by DAA

NLESS an aviation policy in Ireland is drafted, Shannon International Airport is at risk of being downgraded “to a regional airport” it has been claimed.

What started off as a motion designed to praise the Shannon Group at the April meeting of Clare County Council, conversation turned to the current amount of traffic flying into Shannon Airport.

Newmarket-on-Fergus councillor, Pat McMahon asked the local authority to “commend the Shannon Group for the progress of its commercial property division and encourage the Group to examine the potential to leverage spin off employment for the strong aviation cluster based in Shannon.”

When speaking in the Council Chamber, Cllr McMahon felt Matthew Thomas’ decision to step down as CEO of the Shannon Group plus management’s decision not to renew the contract of his predecessor, Neil Pakey “leaves a no confidence factor out there”.

He believed Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) had been undermining Shannon in negotiations for potential routes. The Fianna Fáil councillor stressed the importance of a delegation from Shannon Group visiting China to establish stronger connections.

Noting that he fully supported “the contents of the motion”, Cllr PJ Ryan stated, “There is no doubt about it, Shannon Group have made fantastic inroads in the Free Zone. It’s a pity they wouldn’t put the same effort into the Airport itself, they need to get an awful lot

more passengers passing through”.

He warned that measures need to be taken to deal with DAA who he believed “stooped to a new low in recent times”. The Independent councillor said buses are taking people from Shannon to the capital and putting them on flights from Dublin Airport, “There is a bus outside the terminal building bringing them on transatlantic flights to Dublin, that is a new low.

It’s an absolutely crazy situation. An aviation policy needs to be looked at otherwise we’re going to have a regional airport on our doorstep”.

Following up on mention of China, Cllr James Breen recalled, “When I was Chair of Clare County Council myself and acting CEO Ger Dollard attended a meeting with a delegation from China signing a deal with Air Rianta for flights to and from China but that never happened”. The Kilnamona councillor claimed, “I believe Dublin Airport came along and took it instead of Shannon”.

Independent councillor, Gerry Flynn noted how the debate had steered from the original motion and flagged to the planning department that more emphasis is being put on the Shannon Free Zone as opposed to the town itself, “Look at the restaurant activity that is springing up in the Industrial Estate”.

“With Brexit the time is right for a European cargo hub in Shannon, the facilities are there, everything is in place, now is the time, it is an ideal location for a European hub,” Cllr John Crowe observed. His Fine Gael colleague, Pat Burke shared his concerns for the Airport, “It is a major issue within our own county. A successful tourism provider in East Clare told me about his concern of the lack of activity at Shannon Airport”.

Munster trio annoy environmentalists THE actions of three Munster rugby players has caused annoyance among environmentalists in Clare.

Last week, Conor Murray posted videos on his Instagram account from Lahinch where he, David Kilcoyne and Chris Farrell drove golf balls into the sea.

Murray and Kilcoyne are regular visitors to the coast of Clare but their latest trip has angered individuals who have questioned the environmental damage of their actions.

Some readers of The Clare Echo contacted our newsroom upon seeing the photographs online, and referenced recent articles included in the paper on young climate change protestors Kate Harty, Eleanor Dagnell-Wise, Katie Duson, Áine Dempsey and Wiame Kanane.

On the field, Munster suffered their seventh consecutive European semi-final defeat at the weekend, going down to Saracens 16-32. Farrell was the only one of the trio to play the full eighty minutes while Murray kicked one of their penalties.

NUMBER of infrastructural requirements for Ennis including the development of Our Lady’s Hospital have been identified as part of the Draft Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES).

Ennis has been included as a key town in the RSES which has been put together by the Southern Regional Assembly and sets out aims to be achieved as part of the National Planning Framework. Kilkenny, Carlow, Tralee, Wexford and Clonmel have also been declared as key towns due to their “critical population mass”, “sphere of influence” and generation of economic activity.

With a current population of 25,276, Ennis is the largest town in Munster and the fifth largest settlement in the southern region. Since the Lichfield report in 1965, the triangle of Limerick-Shannon-Ennis was recognised as the economic engine of the MidWest Region. The RSES acknowledged “the provision of the M18 has created a greater synergy and connection between Ennis and Galway” and the “potential to attract economic drivers/infrastructure such as Data Centres, in this context, Ennis should build on its current talent and skills offer and should attract a higher-level education campus”.

According to the draft, “the preparation of the ‘Ennis 2040 Economic and Spatial Strategy’ offers an op-

portunity to create a long-term strategy for the sustainable development of Ennis”.

It’s strategic location between Limerick and Galway, rail bus and motorway connectivity, proximity to internationally recognised tourism assets, electronics innovation, access to “high quality dark fibre broadband”, quality of life and culture plus Ennis General Hospital are deemed to be the main attributes of the town. Potential for development at the Roche site in Clarecastle (23 ha) and land at the Information Age Park (20.8 ha) are also highlighted.

Numerous infrastructural requirements are underlined in the RSES such as “to strengthen ‘steady state’ investment in rail infrastructure to ensure its continued renewal and maintenance to high level to provide quality levels of safety, service, accessibility and connectivity”. Several link roads including the Gort Rd (R458) to the Tulla Rd (R351) are also earmarked.

A Local Transport Plan including mobility management is essential to facilitate the delivery development of key town centre opportunity sites and public realm enhancement initiatives. The potential provision of a new access to the motorway from the Quin Road to alleviate "significant amounts of heavy traffic from the town” is also included.

Redeveloping Our Lady’s Hospital and enhancing “recreational facilities at Lees Road, West Clare Railway line, Ballyalla Lake, the River Fergus and Clarecastle” are other objectives. All infrastructural requirements identified for Ennis are “subject to the outcome of the planning process and environmental assessments”.

Crows delighted to retain Kilmihil star

ADELAIDE Crows are ‘really pleased’ to have the services of Ailish Considine confirmed for 2020.

Last week, the Kilmihil woman was one of eight players to re-sign with the AFLW champions. It comes on the back of a debut season in which Ailish scored four goals including one in their 45 point Grand Final victory Carlton played in front of a record crowd of 53,034.

A former dual player for the Clare ladies football and camogie sides, Considine re-signed as a rookie with the Crows. She first signed for the club last September, off the back of the CrossCoders camp which saw 11 Irish athletes trial for AFLW deals in Melbourne.

Crows General Manager of Football Administration, Phil Harper said of their commitment to the club, “It’s really pleasing that ... Ailish believes our environment is the best one for [her] as a player and person”.

Harper singled out Ailish along with two other teammates who “came into our club from different backgrounds. They all bought into our culture immediately and played important roles in our team success”.

Ailish won’t be the sole Irish representative in the League next year, Western Bulldogs' Aisling McCarthy from Tipperary plus Greater Western Sydney Giants duo Cora Staunton (Mayo) and Yvonne Bonner (Donegal) have all received contract extensions.

Facilities boost for Clare clubs

KILKEE Golf Club and the Burren Ecotourism Network are the latest beneficiaries of LEADER funding in the county. €29,400 will go towards website development and the provision of facilities for disabled people at Kilkee Golf Club and €11,500 to the Burren Ecotourism network for a destination marketing programme.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has welcomed the allocation of more than €40,000 in funding to two rural tourism projects from the latest round of approvals under the LEADER fund. He calculated that the latest allocations brought total LEADER funding for Clare projects to more than €6.6 million.

Carey told The Clare Echo, “This increase reflects a significant expansion of activity over the last 18 months since the introduction of a range of measures to make the programme work better for both potential applicants and for the LEADER Local Action Groups which deliver the programme on the ground.

“We want to see this momentum continue over the coming months and the funding for the approved projects drawn down as quickly as possible. LEADER funding represents an enormous opportunity for rural businesses and communities that are in need of investment and it’s great to see the programme continuing to grow and make a difference for rural Ireland over the coming years”.

Ennis hosts seminar on important Irish language initiative A SEMINAR on a recently-launched Government initiative to promote Irish in areas outside of the Gaeltacht will be held in Ennis this weekend.

The seminar or ‘Tionól’ will take place in the Auburn Lodge on Friday and Saturday and is being hosted by Conradh na Gaeilge in association with An Clár as Gaeilge, the community partnership project set up to promote the language in Clare.

The background to the seminar goes back to 2016, when Ennis became a ‘Baile Líonra Gaeilge’ (Irish Language Network) following an application from Clár as Gaeilge. Ennis is one of only three in the country, the other two being Clodalkin and Loughrea, together with two centres in Northern Ireland.

Through the National Programme for Language Development Plan, Ennis received a funding allocation of €500,000 to establish a centrally located administrative hub, to co-ordinate the various aspects of the Language Development Plan.

There was also provision to fund the employment of a Language Development Officer for each centre.

The Tionól this weekend is being held to show how Irish has developed in the town in the past 40 years, what are the challenges going forward and how the ‘Baile Líonra Gaeilge’ concept is designed to further develop Irish use in Ennis.

The Tionól will be opened on Friday by Dónal Ó hAiniféin, Principal of Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Cíosóg in Ennis and Cathaoirleach of the Ennis Líonra Team. This will be followed by an illustrated talk by Domhnall Ó Loingsigh on the development of Irish in Ennis since 1980, and the achievements that have placed the town at the forefront of language development.

“This is an ideal opportunity for people to discover what is being planned for the future of Irish in the county, and we would welcome all those with an interest in the language to avail of the chance be part of this future,” said Dónal Ó hAiniféin. “The plan that will be put together will be a roadmap for the development of Irish in Clare for the next generation.”

Conroy leads Clare group Fun run set to raise funds for Uganda projects STUART HOLLY

ORTH Clare native John Conroy will once again lead a group of volunteers from around County Clare on a humanitarian mission to Uganda this summer.

The group will volunteer at a palliative care facility and assist on a project that involves the building of a new school.

The Carron man has been volunteering in Africa for the past 12 years, concentrating in Uganda for the past number of years. He is on the Board of Directors with Hospice Jinja, founded by retired GPs Patricia and Frank Hassett from Ennis.

Hospice Jinja is a palliative care service that deals with end-stage cancer and HIV and was founded in 2005 covering an area of 10,000km sq. with a population of 3.5million.

‘Postman’ Poulter set to deliver at Lahinch Ian Poulter is set to bring his renowned passion to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, the second Rolex Series event of the 2019 Race to Dubai, when the Ryder Cup legend makes his first appearance in the Republic of Ireland in 13 years at Lahinch Golf Club this July.

The Englishman, known as the ‘Postman’ to many fans because he always delivers at The Ryder Cup, was in contention for a maiden Major Championship title at the recent Masters Tournament – where Tiger Woods eventually emerged victorious.

Poulter’s commitment means that four of the current top five in the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex, alongside Shane Lowry, Justin Harding and Louis Oosthuizen, will play in a star-studded field at the famous County Clare links from July 4-7.

Major winner Danny Willett and former World Number One Lee Westwood have also been confirmed, meaning the last three winners of Rolex Series events will play in the historic national open – Lowry is the most recent following his win in Abu Dhabi in January.

Poulter last played the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in 2017 at Portstewart Golf Club in Northern Ireland, while his last appearance in the Republic of Ireland came in 2006, but this will mark his first appearance in the southern province of Munster since 2002 at Fota Island in Cork.

“I’m very much looking forward to playing the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open,” said Poulter. “It’s been a while and to play a run of tournaments leading up to The Open Championship is going to be great.

“Lahinch will be a good test, a great links golf course – I haven’t played it yet but Ireland has some of the world’s best golf courses. The Irish are great fans and always have been great fans. They’re true followers of golf, they’re respectful, they know good shots especially in tough conditions and I expect them to be as good as they always are.

“It’s going to be a great tournament with Paul McGinley supporting the event. Paul’s a good friend of mine – I’ve known him now for a very long time as a friend and obviously as a Ryder Cup Captain. He’s a guy that I really respect.”

The 2020 Ryder Cup Captain Padraig Harrington, his fellow Major champion Graeme McDowell and defending champion Russell Knox have also confirmed their participation in what is shaping up to be a world-class field for the July showpiece.

For the average Ugandan there is no radio therapy or chemotherapy as they cannot afford to access it. Once people are diagnosed with cancer they are simply biding their time.

Now thanks to the project, 17 local staff are employed to offer care. Each week the team travel out on home visits to see the patients in their family homes. Often people don’t have transport and are usually too ill to travel to the local clinics so the hospice is very dependent on the generosity of others to ensure they can afford to keep the two jeeps they own on the road.

John also volunteers with Soft Power Education, a British charity and Ugandan NGO working with communities in Uganda to improve quality of life through Education.

This year the group are fundraising to purchase a site where a new school will be built.

Buwenda Primary School, a three teacher school, situated close to Jinja, where the team will be based, currently has three classrooms. The school was built over 20 years ago and is in much need of being rebuilt on the new, larger site. The school gives prior-

to Africa... ity to children who have been orphaned and are living with an elderly relative who cannot work and earn money.

In addition to purchasing the site the group will assist in the painting and the fitting out of the school after it has been built.

Over the last two years John and his Clare based volunteers have raised €55,000.

This money has been used to refurbish two special needs schools, feed the children of the schools for a year, educate and upskill children about the benefits of a balanced diet through the Leap project and upgrade the Hospice Jinja jeep.

To raise funds for this year’s project in Uganda John, and the volunteers will once again host a 6km family walk/fun run in Barefield village on Sunday, April 28th at 12pm.

Last year’s event was a huge success with over 500 people taking part and €6,500 was raised. The group are hoping that this year’s event will be even bigger.

There will be spot prizes and face painting on the day. Registration will open from 10am at Hassett’s Bar in Barefield and all are welcome.

All funds raised will go directly towards the two projects as the volunteers will pay all their own travel and living costs.

The main aim of the fundraising is to

give directly to those most in need, in a country with a population that is growing at a rapid rate and where 35 per cent of the people live below the poverty line, earning less than a dollar a day.

The Education system is struggling to cope with this population growth and children are forced to learn in classrooms that are grossly overcrowded, have poor teaching methods and lack proper materials.

John is being re-joined in Uganda this summer by Annemarie Carpenter, Kevin Twomey, Martha Pietrzyk and Ann McMahon. New volunteers for this year’s project include Sonya Maher, Lorraine Harney, Angela Behan, Ann Moloney, Ronan McMahon, Bridget Dence, Colm Clarke, Elaine Gavin, Joanne Lynch, Rebecca Ludden, Sinead O’Callaghan, Lillian and Lilly Hassett.

The group will fly from Shannon at the end of July and return at the end of August.

Cycle in memory of Sixmilebridge's Ella A FIVE-DAY cycle from Mizen to Malin will take place to raise funds for Blackrock Hospice in memory and celebration of Ella McMahon (nee Costelloe) who sadly passed away in November last year after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ella, originally from Sixmilebridge but living in Delgany, Co Wicklow, was a beautiful and inspirational lady. She was a loving and devoted mother to her two beloved children, Louis and Evie, a wonderful wife to her dedicated husband Jack as well as a loyal lifelong friend to many.

Having attended St Joseph’s Secondary School in Tulla, Ella trained as a hairdresser and stylist. In 2001, she moved to Australia with Jack where they celebrated their wedding three years later. Their family was completed when they welcomed Louis and Evie in 2010 and 2012. Unfortunately Ella was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, however owing to her strength of character and resilience, she successfully battled it through a combination of treatment, diet and a positive mental attitude.

In 2014, they returned to Ireland where they settled in Delgany and Ella became actively involved in the Bray Musical Society. Unfortunately the cancer returned and despite further treatment, Ella lost her brave battle in November. She is sorely missed by the McMahon and Costelloe families and her many friends.

Ella’s husband Jack, who hails from Dromore in Ruan, and a group of his school friends from Rice College along with members of Ella’s family and other close friends are completing the Mizen to Malin challenge. The cycle kicks off in Mizen on May 2 with overnights in Killarney, Ennis, Knock, Rossnowlagh and finishes in Malin on May 6, covering c.700km overall. All participants are covering their own costs to ensure that any funds raised are donated to Blackrock Hospice, who took such wonderful care of Ella and were a vital support to her family.

Kelleher eyes MEP seat STUART HOLLY

IANNA Fáil party leader Micheál Martin wants him to stay in Dáil Eireann, however Cork TD Billy Kelleher has other ideas. Not just content with representing the people of Cork North Central, Kelleher is endeavouring to be elected as an MEP for Ireland South.

While on the campaign trail in Clare on Thursday, Mr Kelleher sat down with The Clare Echo where he admitted, “Micheál Martin would like to see me contest the constituency election but he also accepts I have served for many, many years in the Dáil and that my experience would be a positive attribute for the party, but more importantly the constituents of Ireland South. So I have his support and he’s been out canvassing with me and for me.”

Having had a 6.30am start to his day at Shannon Free Zone where, accompanied by Timmy Dooley TD and Cllr Cathal Crowe, he met employees on their way to work. Mr Kelleher continued onto Ennis, where the Mart was one of his stops, before heading for West Clare.

He told The Clare Echo, “We will be in the county on many, many more days. I think it’s important to engage with people about the election, on what Europe is about, what my candidacy would mean in terms of the impact I could have in Europe and decisions I make that would impact on the lives of people of Clare.”

Mr Kelleher, who holidays in Lahinch every summer and considers Timmy Dooley “a personal friend”, continues, “Clare is

a large county, it’s a changing county in the sense you have larger urban areas, a huge rural hinterland, you have changing demographics, so there’s many things happening in Clare that are happening across the rest of Ireland as well. So it’s to ensure that we have policies that will positively affect the county.”

The 51-year-old pinpoints rural broadband and the beef crisis as two areas he understands are of huge concern to Clare constituents, while noting that people he met in Shannon raised Brexit as an area of concern. “We’ve been talking about Brexit for so many years since the referendum in the UK, and there’s no finality to it and the uncertainty that creates - uncertainty is the enemy of investment so it does have an impact on how people decide whether they will invest.

“Whether it’s a farmer on deciding to build a new milking parlour, whether it’s a business deciding on whether to expand their company, whether people decide to take on extra employees because they’re unsure of the orders they may or may not get from the UK, whether there’ll be tariffs on trade, whether the Sterling-Euro exchange rate will fluctuate beyond what they can tolerate as a business. They’re things that can impact on the person living in Clare.”

The married father of three said that the two key areas he sees where he can influence positive development in Ireland South are the safeguarding of Ireland’s 12.5% corporation tax, and the common agricultural policy.

“Our 12.5% corporation tax rate is something that’s always being discussed in Europe and we need to defend that to the hilt. My view is that the 12.5% corporation tax is sacrosanct…My experience over the years as a TD, as a minister of State in trade, commerce and labour, would give me an insight into how we would negotiate our way to ensuring

that is protected.” He continued, “The other area is the common agricultural policy, which is up for review.

“I come from a farming background.

My constituency is half urban, half rural, a microcosm of the constituency of Ireland South, so that’s very reflective and that would give me an insight into the importance of the common agricultural policy, its funding, and the policies that will be pursued by other governments and political parties across Europe could have a negative impact on Ireland so we have to ensure we fight our corner vigorously and robustly. That does mean changes to the policy in terms of ensuring the vulnerable areas of agriculture are pro-

tected and the rural commerce of sucklers, the tileage farmers, sheep farmers and of course the commercial system that underpins that, the agri-food sector.”

Kelleher adds that while there are uncertainties around Brexit, Ireland must take advantage of its geographical location and position as the largest English speaking country in the European Union. He also had a word of warning on the possibility of a hard border, adding, “The critical issue is that we must make sure regardless of what else happens, is that there’s no border on the island of Ireland, that we don’t end up in a scenario where we have a breakdown of negotiations with the UK… That is of profound importance.”

Seán Kelly sets out European priorities MEP for Ireland South, Sean Kelly, has outlined his priorities for the upcoming EU elections, which take place on Friday, May 24. Mr Kelly was selected by Fine Gael last month to join the race for a European Parliament seat in the Ireland South Constituency, having been elected in 2009 and 2014.

Mr Kelly has served as Fine Gael’s leader of the European Parliament for the last five years, having been appointed to the role by an Taoiseach Enda Kenny in 2014.

“Today I am outlining my priorities that I hope to be able to implement if I am fortunate enough to return to Parliament following the elections on May 24,” said Kelly.

“First of all, I want to see the establishment of a comprehensive EU Just Transition Plan, to ensure that we tackle Climate Change in a way that is fair for all, and that workers in carbon-intensive economic sectors are adequately supported.

“Secondly, I will continue the fight against the budget cuts to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) until we ensure an adequately funded CAP for all Irish farmers.

“Thirdly, I recently negotiated and finalised the EU’s new €650 billion Investment plan. It is now time to ensure that Irish businesses and communities feel the benefit. I continue my work to connect local businesses with opportunities for support at EU level.

“Fourthly, Trade is vitally important to the Irish economy.

With continued uncertainty around Brexit, the next five years will be vital to strengthen trade ties with Asia and the USA in particular. I prioritise work towards new, ambitious and fair agreements as Ireland’s only member of the International Trade Committee.

“Finally, I will work to ensure that child safety is maintained as a key priority of the EU’s Digital Agenda. In an increasingly digital world, we must make sure our children are safe when using online apps and browsers; I will ensure that every digital policy we put in place puts child safety front and centre.”

He concluded, “I have been honoured to represent Ireland South at EU level for the last ten years, and I would be most grateful to have the support to continue my work for the next five. I look forward to the next few weeks of the campaign and particularly meeting with constituents to discuss my priorities for the next term in Parliament.”

Patient's mam: 'If I was dying I would not go to hospital' PÁRAIC McMAHON

ONE Ennis woman whose daughter spent six days in hospital last week has declared she would avoid going to University Hospital Limerick even if she was dying.

Brenda Conlon’s 17 year old daughter, Eileen was rushed to hospital last Sunday week having suffered a serious asthma attack. Having been treated at University Hospital Limerick, Eileen was transferred to Ennis General Hospital until her discharge on Saturday.

Though praiseworthy of the care afforded to her daughter, Brenda was appalled with what she saw in Limerick and noticed a big contrast between that and Ennis General Hospital.

“It is an absolute disgrace, I do not know what is wrong

with our Irish Government.

I do not know what is wrong.

I said to myself ‘thank God I’m not the one in there and thank God my daughter is out of there.

“I’m used to going in and out of hospitals but I can tell you if I was dying in the morning I wouldn’t go there. They are run off their feet, they don’t have enough doctors, not enough wards to look after that many people. I wouldn’t go there if you paid me €200 or €300, I would not go”.

Having initially contacted The Clare Echo to share her concerns, Brenda was then asked where she would go if in need of serious medical attention. “I would actually go to Galway, thank God I haven’t been sick for a while but if I was really sick I would go to Galway”.

When speaking to The Clare Echo last week, man-

Responding to this, Brenda stated, “What’s going to happen then, more people are going to be dying, there’s going to be more people on trolleys in Limerick, more strikes. We could all be dead by the time they deal with it.

The way it is at the minute in Limerick people are dying. It’s not fair but if it was one of their families or say our Taoiseach he’s a GP he should know, if it was one of his family in the morning it would be VIP treatment the whole way”.

The cherry blossom tree which was planted represents life, death and renewal, echoing the Celebrate, Remember and Fight back ethos of the Relay For Life event. Before planting the tree, some shredded Candle of Hope bags were placed in the ground at the tree’s roots to symbolically nourish the tree with the memories of, and hopes for, loved ones affected by cancer.

This year’s event will be held on June 22 and 23 in the Fairgreen, starting at 2pm on Saturday and finishing at 2pm on Sunday. The Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life is a 24-hour event that brings the whole community together to Celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, to Remember those lost to the disease, and to Fight Back by increasing our knowledge of cancer and by raising money to fund life-saving cancer research and providing free services for cancer patients and their loved ones.

At Relay, teams of family members or friends commit to having at least one team member walking around the track at all times. While they are doing that, a festival of fun and entertainment takes place which unites the community in the fight against cancer.

Accidents in the workplace - what to do

T

HE Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Acts 2005 and 2010 set out the rights and obligations of both employers and employees and provides for substantial fines and penalties for breaches of the health and safety legislation but it’s practicalities of what to do on the spot that we address in this article, writes William Cahir Solicitors.

TYPES OF INJURY Accidents can happen at work - small examples are a trip or a fall from a height from scaffolding. Falls from stairs or ladders, or a slip on surfaces where slippery/wet surfaces are not seen or expected or injuries where you have been exposed to dangerous or substances without proper protective equipment and clothing. Machinery which was faulty or inadequately serviced. Injuries happen involving lifting heavy objects and general manual handling of persons or items with weight. Safety and Manual handling training in a work place is carried out under The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, (General Applications) Regulations 2007, so the requirements that must be adhered to in relation to manual handling must be followed to avoid injuries.

SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION Attending to the injured is the priority.

Reach for the first aid box, calling the onsite medical team or calling 911 for accident and emergency care is the first action to take at the scene. Try to remain calm and get the medical assistance needed on site or at another location wherever the injured party is.

REPORT THE ACCIDENT FORMALLY Report the accident immediately to your employer and do your best to ensure that an accident report form is completed. The obligation is on the employer to record the accident but for the injured it is important to record the detail of the incident as soon as possible afterwards on site or remotely at some stage if you must be removed from the scene to hospital due to injuries. If you think it may be helpful take a picture at the location of the accident then arrange one. It may assist your explanation and description of the accident to the employer or solicitor as to what happened. A faulty machine may be obvious but slips, trips and falls or injuries arising from repetitive injury arising from stress on joints may be more challenging to describe so describing the repetitive work process or capturing the location of the accident or machine involved in the incident a picture may assist.

REPORT LOSS OF EARNING If you have been injured in a workplace accident and are out of work and remain unpaid for the duration of your recovery from an injury at work you may be entitled to a full reimbursement of immediate lost earnings and future earnings in circumstances where the injury has damaged your future opportunities and future loss of earnings important particularly if you seek to claim.

STATE SUPPORT OR PAYMENT You may be entitled to a state support while you are out of work. Injury Benefit is a weekly payment if you are unfit for work due

to the accident. If you are still unfit for work after 26 weeks you may be eligible to apply for Illness Benefit or Disability Allowance.

Disablement Benefit is paid if you have a loss of physical or mental faculty after the accident at work, your eligibility will be assessed on application. Any state support is taken into consideration when your claim is successful and a payment for the agreed value of your injury is assessed for payment.

GET ADVICE AND SUPPORT EARLY ON We can advise you in early course of your rights and obligations. Often the first conversation may be to record and report the event, describe what happened and outline the injuries whether serious or minor.

We can outline in early course the way the damages for injuries sustained is paid to you and how the out of pocket expenses can be recovered by you or the injured party. You may not be seeking to take a claim until you see the full extent of the injury, the personal cost to you and how it may come against you later in life. You may only wish to receive your out of pocket expenses. Sometimes the onset of post traumatic injury is not immediate. Understanding the straight forward procedure by which you can be reimbursed is the first step to remove worry.

Where a workplace liability is accepted and uncontested the application to review your injury and out of pocket expenses is an out of court process. Seeking clarity as to the simplicity of the claim’s procedure can assist the personal and financial stress.

KEEP A DIARY Mae West once said "Keep a diary, and someday it’ll keep you" and it's true. Detail the date of the accident, who was there, what happened next, your ongoing injuries, medical appointments, recovery of injuries as they occur, out of pocket expenses & receipts. The mind cannot hold all the information that you will be asked to recall so note it, jot it down and diary it.

GET AND KEEP WITNESS DETAILS Another person’s recollection and record of the event can be helpful in gathering details but it can also be helpful to support your version of events. If there are witnesses ask them to give their account of the incident. If there is a dispute as to liability an independent person's account can be helpful to clarify what happened and their statement can help you and your employers.

GET AND KEEP WITNESS DETAILS Taking a picture or asking a work mate to take a picture at the scene may be helpful in assisting to identify the location of the accident. It will aid your description of the incident that happened. It will also be helpful to your employer to have a picture for the mandatory accident report form that will be completed on site. A picture may be better than a thousand words in showing who or what was where at the time of the incident. "An accident won’t arrive with a bell on its neck" - Finnish Proverb

DOONBEG DRAMA GROUP SET FOR OPEN FESTIVAL CIRCUIT This is Doonbeg Drama Group’s first year on the Open Festival Circuit having won the All Ireland Confined Finals in Tubbercurry in 2017 with their production of ‘The Night Alive’ by Conor McPherson.

The Group have been very successful with four first placings in Charleville, Claregalway, Claremorris and Glenamaddy. Doonbeg Drama Group has also had many individual awards including a number of Best Director awards for Mary J. Egan, Best Actress for Anne Marie Doyle in four Festivals, three Best Supporting Actor awards for Dave Hanley, two Best Actor awards for Kenneth Blowers, Best Moment in Theatre and many nominations for Set, Sound Effects and Lighting.

A spokesperson for the group said, “A production needs a committed backstage crew and here in Doonbeg, we are fortunate to have people who give their time to constructing and putting up theset, the lighting crew who work tirelessly, those doing soundeffects, stage managers, costume, props and make-up personnel. They are not seen on stage but without their input the show can’t go on.

“We are proud to be the only Group representing Co Clare at the RTE All Ireland Finals in the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone in 2019 and also the First Group from Doonbeg to qualify for the Open Finals.

TRACTOR RUN RAISES FUNDS FOR STELLA MARIS DAY CENTRE The Stella Maris Day Centre, Lisdoonvarna would like to thank Tom Howley, Ken Scheunemann and the hard working committee for organising the “ Ballyvaughan Tractor and Truck Run “ which was held in memory of Mikie Irwin, Ballyvaughan and took place on Sunday the 20th of January. Proceeds from the run in the amount of €1,865.00 were presented to the Day Centre on the 17th of April. for my project. Some of the interviewees were republican, and their political activities were a factor in moving. I learned a lot about republicanism in Shannon during the 1970s and began to look more into IRA activity in the South as a whole during the ‘Troubles’.

The extent of activity - training, financing, armed robberies, demonstrations, support and sympathy - amazed me.”

This book provides the first analysis of IRA volunteers from the Republic of Ireland during the ‘Troubles’: their social background, motivations, age and occupations. It documents the activities of the Provisional IRA in the South and contains hitherto unpublished descriptions of training camps in the Republic of Ireland as well as interviews with former republican activists.

SHANNON AUTHOR’S BOOK ON PROVISIONAL IRA THE official launch of A BROAD CHURCH, The Provisional IRA in The Republic of Ireland, 1969-1980 (Merrion Press) will take place at Shannon Rowing Club house, Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick, Friday, May 3 at 7pm.

The Author is Gearóid Ó Faoileán from Shannon, County Clare.

A Broad Church has been extensively reviewed in Northern Ireland, to critical acclaim and also some controversy, with several prominent Unionist MPs calling on Taoiseach, Leo Varadker to instigate a Public Inquiry into the role of politicians in the Republic during the time period covered in the book.

Ulster Radio, Ocean FM, and the BBC radio have conducted interviews with the author.

Gearóid was born and raised in Shannon, to a mother from Belfast and father from Athlone. He attended Gaelscoil Donncha Rua and St.Patricks Comprehensive School, Shannon before completing his B.A in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

According to the Shannon man, “I had previous experience and interest in oral history and was interested in the Northern Irish connection with my hometown, Shannon.

During the 1970s/early 1980s, upwards of one-third of the town’s population was from the North, particularly Belfast; my mother’s family included. I interviewed Northerners about the push- and pull-factors of their migration

THE PAPAL VISIT Our final visit back to the seventies places us into a time of papal prosperity. Pope John Paul II, newly elected, makes his first visit to the devoutly Catholic nation of Ireland. Thirty years on with the visit of the respected, yet less favoured Benedict the country embodies an entirely different landscape. Social issues of homelessness and needless expenditure make the headlines, second to the indignant protests of people against the papal visit.

The Ireland of 1979 bore little resemblance to this inquisitive, liberal Ireland. Preparations were thorough and elaborate. Pope John Paul II ended his visit on October 1, 1979, leaving from Shannon Airport. During his short stay he blessed the Fountain Stone for St. John and Paul Church.

He also handed a sapling to the bishop of every diocese shortly before his departure.

There was a spark of enthusiasm amongst the Polish c o m munities in Ireland, lauding the reputation of their fellow clergymen.

Perhaps the most iconic image of the Pope’s

visit was captured by a freelance photographer on that very day, then working for the Clare Champion. An image deeply associated with the air of enchantment surrounding the then head of church.

Native Clare man, Padraig O’Reilly was commissioned by the paper to cover the Pope’s departure from Ireland. Due to tight security protocol, Mr O’ Reilly nearly missed the opportunity to complete his task. Perched over 50 yards away, he put his long lens to good use and dubiously seized the moment.

Imagine if that never came to pass. A standstill moment in time that connects the Ireland of old to the Catholic Church.

BARRETT GOES ON THE DEFENCE

In 1979, Clare man Sylvester Barrett was appointed Minister for Defence. It is not often we hear of a Clare man resting at the top of the political food chain. Mr Barrett subsequently retained this position until 1981, when he became Minister of State for finance.

Eulogies commemorated the tireless work he did for the people of Clare and the constant motions he put forward on their behalf. He was immensely proud of his roots, having been born at Darragh, near Ennis in 1926. Ironically, Sylvester Barrett was born on the same day that Fianna Fail were founded. Perhaps his fate was written in stone.

He was educated in St Flannan’s College and later progressed to University College Galway. His longstanding political career came to fruition in 1968, whereby he was elected to the Dail in a by-election. His lifelong link to the people of Clare did not only manifest itself in the spiritual form as Mr Barrett had his office near Ennis all his life. Mr Barrett passed away on May 8, 2002 leaving behind his wife, four sons and a highly decorated political career.

THE WREN BOYS OF CLARE In November 1979, RTE took to West Clare in order to film a documentary entitled, ‘The West Clare Wren.’ The location was the small fishing village of Kilbaha. Donncha O Dulaing presented the documentary to the world on 21 December 1979 as a Christmas special.

In it, the Wren boys can be seen in action in the cottage of Jack and Mag Lynch, sporting the traditional wear of the festival of the Wren. But what exactly is this obscure festival? Taking place on December 26 each year, the festival is imbued in Celtic Mythology. The act is seen as one of attrition, a so called cleansing or purge. We are all familiar with the story of the Wren, the most fearsome of all birds in the sky. One day all the birds took to the skies to see who could fly the highest. At the end, only two remained. The great eagle and the wren. The wren ultimately outwits the eagle with an act of deceit. As the eagle grows tired, he begins to sink and lose altitude. In the meantime, the wren unfurrows itself and soars to exorbitant heights.

The wren’s untrustworthy demeanour is said to have been the demise of St Stephen, which explains the hunting of the wren on this particular day. In places like Dingle and Kilbaha, people take to the streets dressed in straw suits to celebrate this pre-Christian tradition.

The festival had great opposition from the Catholic Church which determined its rituals as heretical and sinful. The efforts of smaller isolated populations is all that keeps this esoteric tradition alive.

When a Golden Eagle was king of the Burren I ALL,

Last time we linked up, you may recall me referring to the relocation of St Colman in an area of the Burren called Sliver Carron, which was sheltered by the plateau of Eagles Rock. You may also have wondered why I referred to Eagles Rock. On reflection of the same, let me explain.

It was named Eagles Rock for the reason that, up until the early 20th century it accommodated an eyrie which was 6ft in diameter, 2ft high and which was carefully constructed from materials that reflected the habitat in which it was built, and was home to the most powerful predator in the avian world and king of the Burren sky, the Golden Eagle.

At the foot of this meter-high cliff lay a carst landscape, predominantly carpeted by a mass of calcareous grasslands, petrifying springs and scrub plus light woodland, but most importantly it was as-yet undisturbed by human civilization, which offered the ideal balance of habitat to the Golden Eagle who hunted and feasted at its own leisure. This activity usually took place during the hours of daylight and consisted mainly of young foxes, rabbits, other birds, squirrels or whatever was available in any given day, unless at eaglet birthing season when they could be spotted foraging before sunrise or after sunset.

Here they have been known to demonstrate breath-taking aerial displays before swooping down on an unsuspecting victim - once contact was made there was no escape as the powerful talons of the Golden Eagle’s crushing grip, piercing the organs of the victim leaving it for dead.

All things considered, it seemed as if the Golden Eagle adapted very well to the conditions of this geographical region until the 1700s following the Industrial revolution, which in turn resulted to a sudden change in the demographic balance of this otherwise remote area. Notable ecological changes within the Burren included the clearance of pine and hazel [cultivation] in preparation for

grazing of cattle, pigs and sheep and the growing of crops. As the dynamics of farming changed over time, so did the habitat and ecosystem of the surrounding area. Increasing agricultural activities such as this had a lasting effect on the environment as in the case of our friend the Golden Eagle. You see these terrestrial predators are opportunists by nature and will approach virtually any animal of a reasonable size by determination of local availabity, therefore this increasing abundance of domestic species resulted in a much greater variation of which the eagle was quick to adapt.

Such massacres were most prevalent around calving and lambing season as this would also have been the birthing period of the eaglets. The previously closed canopy of woodland had now been exposed in many areas, leaving wide open spaces thus increasing the variety of prey from which the foraging hawkeyed eagle keenly observed.

I have also learnt that these aggressive raptors can lift more than their own body weight while still in flight [12/14 lbs female] [8/9 lbs male], and have been known to attack and snatch up young deer. Their usual exhibits of effortless mastery would entail gliding at sky line level, then circling the air where they would observe the movements of their intended victim which they hoped to select and ambush. Swooping downwards, they would spread their 8ft wide wing span and while covering the target, sink its razor sharp talons into the

innocent animal, often dragging it right out from under its mother’s legs. The key to success here is the eagle’s agility and the prey’s inability to find cover.

They have also been known to drag game from a cliff, for example a mountain goat, hence confirming the farmer’s worst fears for their flock.

When you stop to appreciate the difficulties which these small-holders must have encountered while trying to cultivate and make a living out of this rocky landscape, you can nearly understand why they had to combat the horrifying torture of their herd, which regrettably resulted in the eagle’s demise.

Nevertheless, I now understand that since 2001 Irish conservationists have made great efforts to reintroduce the Golden Eagle to our beautiful island of Ireland, which has sparked controversy among some farming communities.

Personally, I was delighted to learn that eagles nest in Sliebh Carron - the Burren Co Clare is presently being inhabited by the majestic Peregrine Falcon which is much kinder to the biodiversity of the Burren region.

That being said, I’d better head now if I am to get to Sliebh Carron before sunset, and who knows I might even get to experience the flight display of these crafty predators for myself.

S

OMETIMES at the start of a new day or week or a new beginning we are afraid to wish or pray for good things to happen to us or to show gratitude for the good things in our lives or to go after good things for ourselves, our families and our friends. A lot of us spend our time stuck in regret, wishing our lives had turned out differently, and beating ourselves up for the decisions that have led us to this place. We feel cheated out of a life that could have been something better.

We feel angry and sad and disappointed. And most of all, we feel stuck. In these moments, it’s easy to focus on all of the things that have gone wrong. It’s easy to focus on the loss and the heartbreak and the pain, but it’s also important to remember all of the things that have gone right. The start of a new beginning can be a time when we can and should focus on the positives and good things in our lives. It’s important to remember all of the positive experiences and friendships and growth and laughter we have gained, things you would have never taken part in, lessons you would have never learned, and people you would have never met had you not veered off the desired path. The start of a new beginning is a time to look at one’s life and to look at how one can make it better, more good, more healthier, more loving, more caring, more thoughtful, more hardworking, more thankful, more compassionate, more spiritual, more positive, more inclusive and more fulfilling.

The truth is that every time you thought you were missing out on something important, you were given the opportunity to experience something valuable in its own right. Every time life’s obstacles rejected you from something good, you were being redirected to something, or someone, equally wonderful. You may not have ended up where you intended to

go, but trust, for once, that you have ended up where you need to be. Trust that you are in the right place at the right time. Trust that every experience has something to offer you. Trust that something that feels like a curse in the moment can blossom into a blessing.

Trust that your life is enough.

Trust that you are enough. Why are most of us afraid to follow our dreams? Why do the majority of us find it difficult to achieve what we want, while the minority can somehow set out without so much as a care in the world?

“Don’t give up on yourself” ‘One day a Man in his 40’s got fed up and decided to quit. “I quit my job, my relationship, my spirituality, in fact I want to quit my life”, he said. Then He went to the woods to have one last talk with God. “God! Can you give me just one good reason not to quit?” He said. But God’s answer surprised him. “Look around”, God said.

“Do you see the fern and the bamboo tree’s?” “Yes”,The Man replied.

Then God continued, “When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds at the same time, I took very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water.

The fern quickly grew from the earth. It’s brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed.

But I did not quit on the bamboo. In the third year, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit! In the fourth year, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit! Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant. But just six months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall.

It had spent the five years growing roots but six months to Shoot to the Sky! Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed

not just to Survive but to be Significant amidst its peers. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle because I love them too well!” God said to Him, “Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots.” “I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you. Don’t compare yourself to others.” “The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern.

Yet, they both make the forest beautiful. “Your time will come and You will rise high!”, God said.

“How high should I rise?” The Man asked. “How high will the bamboo rise?” God asked in return. “As high as it can? The Man replied. “Yes!” God said, “Give me glory by rising as high as you can!” You see God will never give up on us because we are close to His Heart. Never regret a day in your life. Good days give you happiness and Bad days give you experiences. Both are essential to life! A happy and meaningful life requires our continuous input and creativity. It does not happen by chance. It happens because of our choices and actions. And each day we are given new opportunities to choose and act and, in doing so, we create our own unique journey. Keep going and be positive and faithful to your journey as much as you can be. Remember, God will not give up on you.

Don’t give up on yourself!!

Thought for the week As your thought for the week, dare to dream, but, even more importantly, dare to put action behind your dreams and be the best you can be and know and trust that you are enough. Be grateful for all the good things in your life. In finishing I would like to give you this prayer of gratitude that I have adapted to suit what I am grateful for from a prayer by Fr. James Martin and maybe you should try and adapt it for what you are grateful and thankful for in your life as you begin into a new day and new week. “Thank

you, God. I’m grateful for so many things that you have given me. I am so grateful for the gift of life that you have given me with all its ups and downs. Without you I wouldn’t be here. Without you nothing would be here. Without you nothing would be at all. I’m grateful for my beautiful and loving parents. They love me with every breath of their being, and they work so hard to make sure that I and my family have enough to eat, that I am clothed and that I have a place to sleep. I’ll never know all that they did for me, but I can be grateful for the things that I know.

Help me to be a grateful child, and remind me to be grateful in person. If your parents have ended their time on earth and are with God, be thankful for their lives.

I am so grateful for my friends.

Even if I have only one, two or a few good friends in my life right now, I’m so grateful. God, you show your love for me through my friends in ways that I sometimes overlook.

They give me advice, sometimes when I need it, sometimes when I don’t, which in both situations is a sign of their care for me. They listen to me complain, which I do too much, and they celebrate with me, even if things aren’t always going well for them. They help me to laugh. And they help me to laugh at myself. That alone is reason to be thankful. Help me to be always a good friend in return. I am so grateful for my family. Yes, I know that all families are a little nutty, and mine is no exception. Even Jesus’s family tree had its share of complications. But I’m thankful that, even with the nuttiness, I’m part of a family that has helped to make me the person I am. I know that they try to love me the best that they can.

Help me to be a good family member, trying to help out when I can, make the phone call or pay a visit when they’re lonely, and keep my mouth shut when I should be listening, or when I don’t have anything sensible to add to the

conversation. I am so grateful for my job. It’s not always a bed of roses, but at least I have a place to work and I am able to make ends meet. That’s more than many people have. Help me to be a good co-worker, to give people the benefit of the doubt, to care for the people and children who are in need and in extreme poverty with whom I work. And help me remember that all work done freely and with a loving heart is worthy in your sight. I’m grateful for all the things that I know many people in this world don’t have. And that’s a long list. So I’m grateful for food. And clean water that is easily available. And clothes. And a roof over my head and my family’s head. And heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. I’m grateful that I can go to the doctor and get a check up and even get shots to help me avoid illness.

That’s a lot more than most people have. Help me to be grateful, and help me remember that I can help those who have less by being generous, caring, compassionate, merciful and loving. That’s one way of thanking you. Most of all, God, I’m grateful for your presence in my life. You’re everywhere, and if I remember to pay attention I can see your invitation to meet you in every moment of the day. I know that it is you who turn my mind to thoughts of gratitude and I pray to you to be more mindful of the positive during the next few weeks than the negative.

And when I’m tempted to focus only on the problems and worries and fears, I know that I’m being led away from you. Now, I’m not always as thankful as I should be, but today as we start into a new year, a new beginning, I am. This week I will try to be grateful for family, friends, colleagues and everything in my life every day, since you are generous to me, like you are every time. Amen.”

Sweet n Green keeps us keen

IDING in the friary car park in Ennis SweetnGreen are a family run healthy cafe and restaurant with a twist. Sweet n Green by day are a healthy cafe offering healthy, tasty breakfast and lunch as well as some delicious deserts, hence the name. Friday and Saturdays however offer a little extra. Evening elegant small plates and tapas with amazing craft wine and homemade desserts that are to die for.

Being my first time in Sweet n Green I was surprised at just how big the restaurant is. Arriving at roughly 7pm, Sweet n Green had some traffic flowing in and as we were informed it can fill up quite quickly on a Friday or Saturday so it is important of course to always book ahead. At reception we were greeted by Siobhán who owns the cafe/ restaurant along with her husband who is head chef. The staff where extremely friendly and ran through everything on the menu which was very helpful.

On first looking at the menu I knew immediately I would like the food. The menu had an array of flatbreads and small plates to choose from such as slow cooked Hoi Sin duck and buttermilk panko chicken goujons. All ingredients are healthy and locally sourced that will be sure to tick the box for your weekend eat out. You also won’t go thirsty with Sweet n Green offering some amazing craft wine from different regions every week, non-alcoholic beer and wines are also on offer. The small plates are a great way to taste and chat. It’s such a great place for a group to get together to try and share different dishes.

The dishes I tasted where the slow cooked Hoi Sin duck flatbread, Thai green coconut basil celeriac curry with Monkfish and sautéd prawns and cubeen chorizo on sourdough bread.

DESSERTS: An amazing range of desserts freshly made.

A healthy cafe/restaurant serving smallplates and tapas we impressed.

Flatbread was crisp and had a snap like a pizza base which was topped with the slow roasted tender duck and was drizzled with the sweet Hoi sin sauce. The fresh salad popped with citrus notes from the shears of apple and pomegranate. As duck is my favourite meats I was of course in heaven with this meal and would most definitely order it again.

The second plate we ordered were fresh sautéed prawns coated in cubeen chorizo oil. The fresh prawns were cooked perfectly and accompanied with chorizo, you can’t go wrong. The chorizo gave a nice salty contrast to the sweetness of the prawns. The homemade sourdough was perfect to tear, share and dip flavours left from the prawn and chorizo oil.

Two essentially very simple dishes but when done properly with fresh ingredients can produce great depths of flavour.

DISH OF THE DAY: THAI GREEN COCONUT BASIL AND CELERIAC CURRY WITH MONKFISH My dish of the day is definitely the Monkfish Thai curry. This dish tastes as good as it sounds. While a lot of Thai curries typically use quite a bit of coconut milk and this can often drown out the primary flavours of the curry created by the paste. However this curry is different. While the taste of coconut is present the curry focuses more on bringing out the other Thai flavours as well as the basil and celeriac more without an overwhelming taste of coconut. While you can have the veggie option we opted to add the monkfish which any fish fan knows is such a great and meaty fish. The monkfish was very delicate and sweet which in my opinion added so much more to this already tasty dish. This curry is sure to hit the spot with anyone that is a fan of curry so make sure to give it a try.

I would honestly reccommend anyone thinking of dining out in Sweet n Green to go for it. You will not be dissappointed but remember to book in advance for Friday and Saturday evenings. Even if you are popping in for a spot of lunch or grabbing a healthy snack and coffee on the go Sweet n Green really does have you covered.

Having established a fine dining bistro called Kristian’s in Puerto Del Carmen in Lanzarote, the West Clare establishment’s new owners returned to Eimear’s native Clare last year. While Christopher set about continuing his cheffing career, Eimear and their two young daughters adjusted to life back in the Banner. And as Eimear tells The Clare Echo, “It was like we never left! Chris was working in Vaughan Lodge for the season when we got back, and I was fortunate to be able to take six months off.”

Award-winning chef Christopher and Eimear’s journey began only down the road many years ago in the Atlantic Hotel, where the pair first met. Chris was chef while Eimear, a qualified secondary school teacher, would work there on the weekends. Married in 2007, they wasted no time in relocating to Spain the following year to build a life together (and a young family to boot). It was here they began a journey which would bring them back to Spanish Point, only a stone’s throw from Mullagh where Eimear grew up.

With five years under their belt in Madrid, the pair moved to the popular Canary island of Lanzarote to establish Kristian’s, which they put firmly on the foodie map. It became the only Irish restaurant to be included in the Spanish Qui Bueno guide for good food, while it was the first non-Spanish restaurant to participate in a prestigious gastronomy food festival in the island’s old capital, Teguise. However the draw of home became too much and - with the future of their two girls Sofia (3) Isabel (5) in mind - they left Spain behind to establish their future on the Wild Atlantic Way. With the opportunity in Spanish Point coinciding with with the young family’s return to Ireland, Eimear says

it was too attractive an opportunity to refuse.

Eimear tells The Clare Echo that the couple plans to build on the reputation built by Red Cliff Lodge’s previous owners. She explains, “It had a good reputation for its restaurant and accommodation anyway - the restaurant had been closed for a year and a half so we’re delighted to get it open again. John and Bríd O’Meara who have taken over the Lahinch Coast Hotel, they are very professional people so we were delighted with where they had brought Red Cliff Lodge.”

Fresh ingredients from local suppliers (including butcher Noel O’Connor, CS Fish, Burren Smokehouse and Gerrihy’s Seafood) are brought to life on their exquisite menu.

When asked to elaborate on what a customer at RedCliff Lodge can expect, Eimear expresses that a reputation of fine dining should not be confused with silver service “It’s a really good dining experience, and we offer luxury rooms but it’s not pretentious.

The Redcliff Lodge is a relaxed environment.”

Eimear, a former Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon student, adds that she is delighted to enter the world of accommodation with Red Cliff Lodge offering a selection of suites and lodges. And happily for her, it is a real family affair - her sister and niece are among those employed as they head into their busy summer season. With the Willie Clancy Festival festival around the corner and Irish Open being hosted in Lahinch for the first time, there’s a great air of anticipation for the Kings as they look to flourish in their first year.

“Any phone call that’s made, people are asking about accommodation for the Willie Clancy and the Irish Open. The Willie Clancy week puts Miltown Malbay and Spanish Point on the map and then the golf coinciding with it, the surrounding areas of Lahinch will definitely aid from it.”

Having taken over officially in February, she adds, “It’s great, the weekends are busy and accommodation is just starting to take off now.”

OUNCILLOR Cathal Crowe, Fianna Fáil general election candidate, says the Government’s failure to deliver on its promise to bring in changes to the Fair Deal scheme for farm families is further evidence of Fine Gael’s disinterest in rural Ireland.

Farmers were forced to protest outside the Dept of Health last week to highlight their frustration with the current Fair Deal scheme.

In recent weeks, Cllr Crowe said he met with his local IFA branch where the matter was raised.

Cllr Crowe said, “The Government has made great hay out of the announcement to amend the Fair Deal legislation to make it fairer for farm families but have done little in terms of progressing

the Bill needed to make it a reality.

“Fine Gael committed back in 2017 to bringing forward legislation, which would cap farm contributions from farm assets at three years, if a family member is continuing to work on the farm.

However, the Heads of Bill have still not been published. This delay is unacceptable and means that farm families throughout Clare are losing out on the benefits of this scheme.

“This has been a bug-bear for farming families for years, and these changes are desperately needed to make the scheme fairer and to ensure that older farmers can access the care they need.”

The Meelick man continued, “As it stands,

Clare farmers could lose a substantial portion of their farm if they spend a long time in a nursing home – this is because the 7.5% contribution charge on assets is applied on a yearly basis with no cap in place. Farm families want to see this capped at three years, similar to the cap on residential homes.

“Farmers are being unfairly discriminated against in this Fair Deal scheme. The government committed to bring in a cap but has dragged its feet ever since.

This legislation must be made a priority so that farm families have the same options open to them as other families. “The longer this legislation is put on the back burner, the more farm families are affected. However, there is no sense of urgency from Government on this. This antirural bias must end”, he concluded.

FA National Sheep Chairman Sean Dennehy said sheep farmers should not accept the unrealistic low quoted prices offered by the meat factories this week for lamb.

The IFA sheep farmers leader “accused the factories of trying to undermine the market at this key time of the year, when prices should be peaking”.

Sean Dennehy said despite some quotes as low as €5.00/kg, factories are having to pay €5.50 to €5.60/kg for hoggets and up to €1 more for spring lambs. He said some larger finishers were securing deals above these price levels.

He said with Ramadan beginning on the first week of May, demand for lamb should continue strong and supplies will remain tight. “The factories are trying their hardest to undermine the market and pay lower prices to farmers, which in turn will hit farm income. Farmers must resist this and insist on prices significantly above the low quoted prices.”

ORD hass unveiled an extensive range of new vehicles that are designed to help make cities cleaner and quieter by increasingly using more environmentally friendly electric power.

The comprehensive line-up, under a new Ford Hybrid banner, will cover everything from small family cars to SUVs and people-movers – with a Mustang-inspired performance SUV and fully electric Transit van on the way.

In a move that marks a new milestone for the company, Ford is committed to delivering a fresh range of fuel-efficient and funto-drive vehicles that are tailored to meet the diverse needs of its European customers – whether tackling the school run, delivering parcels or looking for performance.

“Ford Hybrid vehicles will make electrification relevant and attainable for more drivers than ever before. From Fiesta to Transit, every new vehicle we introduce will feature an electrified version that best suits the needs of our customers in an affordable

way,” said Stuart Rowley, president, Ford of Europe. “Along with advances in technology and connectivity, the models introduced today are just the start of our plans to develop a comprehensive line-up of smart vehicles for a smart world.”

Earlier this year, Ford committed that all the company’s future nameplates would include an electrified option.

The all-new Kuga mid-size SUV will offer the widest range of hybrid options the company has ever made available and will deliver a pure-electric driving range in excess of 50 km (31 miles) with the Kuga Plug-In Hybrid model; the same range being targeted by the new Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid eightseat people-mover. The line-up of hybrid SUVs will be complemented by the all‑new seven-seat Explorer Plug-In Hybrid.

Ford also revealed new electrified passenger vehicles – the Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid and Focus EcoBoost Hybrid models – that feature sophisticated mild-hybrid technology for reduced CO2 emissions, better fuel‑efficiency, and a more responsive and re-

warding driving experience.

For commercial vehicle customers, Ford also announced that a new all-electric Transit will join its line-up of electrified commercial vehicles in 2021. Designed to deliver pure-electric power, the new van will both contribute to cleaner, quieter towns and cities, and reduce costs for business and operators. Ford’s Mustang-inspired all-electric performance SUV will arrive in 2020, with a pure-electric driving range of 600 km (370 miles).

“There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution when it comes to electrification – every customer’s circumstances are different,” Joerg Beyer, executive director, Engineering, Ford of Europe. “Ford’s nuanced powertrain strategy is designed to help our customers find

the right solution to make their electrified vehicle experience easier and more enjoyable.”

Ford also is exploring solutions to further optimise the energy efficiency and driving range of its electrified vehicles by testing a one-of-a-kind Ford Transit Smart Energy Concept 10-seater minibus. Delivering a 150-km (93-mile) range from a 4-hour charge, the concept uses a Ford Transit chassis fitted with battery-electric technology.

To date, Ford Hybrid models available on the market include its popular Mondeo model, Tourneo Custom people-mover, and Transit and Transit Custom vans. Future all‑electric vehicles will be supported by the IONITY consortium that aims to build 400 stations in key European locations by 2020.

Ei Electronics to double production facility

I Electronics will undergo a major expansion at their Clare headquarters, writes Páraic McMahon.

Last year, the company celebrated 55 years in Shannon and 30 years as an Irish owned business. As it looks to the future, EI will expand on its workforce of 750 when it doubles their existing production facility.

Speaking at a Shannon Chamber breakfast briefing, Owner of EI Electronics, Michael Guinee outlined their ambition to create a three storey production facility by the end of 2020.

In 2018, the company sold 10 million smoke alarms and are presently exporting to 30 countries. Guinee confirmed that the group turnover is in the region of €200m. Although 66 percent of their

foreign market is in the UK, he was confident that regardless of the outcome from Brexit, the company would not be dramatically affected.

“We expect to double our revenue to €400 million in the next five years, all our growth is organic.”

EI is the biggest employer in the Shannon Free Zone and one of the largest in the Mid-West. The expansion will lead to additions to their workforce.

In 1963, General Electric (USA) established a fledgeling Irish manufacturing operation in Shannon, the EI or ‘Emerald Isle’ Company as it was originally known. The 1980s was a period of uncertainty for the company with a significant drop in employment. GE announced its plans to close in November 1986 however they soon agreed to a buyout in their Irish interests

from management led by then managing director Mick Guinee along with Dr Mike Byrne and Jim Duignan. The company then became EI Electronics.

In 1990, they launched their own brand of smoke alarms into the UK retail market and have been regular supporters of local organisations and events in the region since. “We made the voyage from an Irish company trading internationally to an international company that is proud to be Irish”, Guinee stated.

CEO of Tekelek Europe Ltd and a former employee of EI, Peter McCarthy said at the briefing, “EI is not just a company, it is an institution. You can never leave it. It was the best training ground”.

Remarking of EI’s Centre of Excellence, Ian Bolger, co-managing director of Bolger Engineering added, “It is a testament to what can be achieved in what is sometimes considered to be a remote location”.

Naughton appointed to new role

SVP hosts JP McManus Pro-Am Pre-Qualifier

T

HE Society of St Vincent de Paul in the Mid-West Region will be participating in the JP McManus Pro-Am which will take place at Adare Manor on July 6 and 7, 2020. This event generates significant funding for participating Charities in the Mid-West, and in 2010 proved a major success with record crowds in excess of 40,000 turning out each day at the event. In order to be eligible to participate SVP is required to run a Pre-Qualifier Singles Golf Classic which will take place at the Shannon Golf Club on Friday May 31st, 2019.

The cost of entry to the pre-qualifier event is €100 per player which will cover green fees and a meal on May 31st as well as the entrance cap which is a traditional golfing flat cap and which enables admission on both days of the ProAm Competition next year. SVP hopes to field fifty groups of three players at their Pre-Qualifier event on May 31st. Following the conclusion of the Singles Classic Competition, teams of three from all the returned cards will be picked at random at an open draw and the team picked with the highest cumulative total, based on two scores to count at each hole, will go forward to the Grand Qualifier in May 2020.

John Lupton, Regional President, said that the Pre-Qualifier event provides golfing enthusiasts with an opportunity to support SVP, enjoy a game of golf, receive a souvenir cap providing admission to the Pro-Am and the opportunity to spectate and perhaps even play at Adare Manor next year.

SVP’s participation in this event contributes significantly to the charitable work carried out by SVP Members providing, as it does, much needed funds to support individuals and families in need locally. The Society in the Mid-West Region spends an average of €2,000,000 per annum providing support to those in need through its impressive network of Volunteer Members. Such support includes assisting families and individuals through the provision of food, fuel, assistance with household bills and education. The Society in the Mid-West responds to in excess of 16,000 requests for assistance per annum and contributes significantly to alleviating homelessness through the operation of two hostels and in excess of sixty social housing units. Improve putter aim to hold more putts

I

’VE always felt that putting has been the weakest part of my own golf game, but apart from trying to practice more I never understood exactly why I struggle so much until last week.

I read about a student in UL, Eoghan McNeil who was looking for candidates for a study he is carrying out for college. He is gathering data on putting strokes from professional golfers to non-golfers using the Sam Putting Lab. I was eager to book in to find out once and for all what my putting stroke looked like and how I could start to improve it. What I learned about my putting that night I visited Eoghan highlighted exactly why I’ve always been inconsistent with my putter.

Everyone of us have different putting strokes and I’m convinced our putting strokes stem from our initial clubface alignment. For instance, I aim my putter face open - or right - of my target at address. On a straight putt from roughly 4ft my putter was aiming right of the hole. The issue here is now my putting stroke has to alter its path in order for me to get the ball started on line with the hole.

Basically I have to pull my putts and close down my clubface to get the ball started on the correct line. My follow-through stroke has to pull my putts left in order to compensate for my alignment to the right. Due to the severity of my putter face having to shut close through impact, my consistency is going to be poor. I have definitely seen an improvement in how many putts I’m holding however I know this will improve even further once I get more comfortable with my new set-up. Learn your own putter face aim at address and your putting stroke using alignment sticks and see if you can drop 1-3 putts off your average putts per round total by the end of May. Most of us don’t aim our putters correctly and a simple change of your alignment can lead to a huge improvement in the amount of putts you hold.
