N Ennis man was yesterday charged with the murder of mother of two, Sharon Bennett.

At Ennis District Court, Patrick Ballard (34) appeared after being charged with the murder of Wexford native, Ms Bennett.

Mr Ballard has been on remand in prison after being initially charged with the assault causing harm of Ms Bennett (29) in the Market area of Ennis on Thursday, January 28th last.

Ms Bennett died 13 days later at University Hospital Limerick.

At Ennis District Court

yesterday, Det Garda Noelle Bergin gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution of Mr Ballard at 10.30am on Wednesday morning before court.

Det Garda Bergin told the court that Mr Ballard of Ashford Court Hotel, Ennis made “no reply” in response to caution and charge.

Sgt Aiden Lonergan applied that the initial charge of assault causing harm against Mr Ballard be withdrawn now that the murder charge has been made.

Judge Patrick Durcan acceded to that request and struck out the assault causing harm charge.

Judge Durcan stated that as it is a murder charge, the question of bail in the district court doesn’t arise.

Judge Durcan granted legal aid to solicitor, Tara Godfrey

concerning the murder charge.

Ms Godfrey applied that Mr Ballard be psychiatrically assessed while on remand in prison and Judge Durcan granted that application.

Judge Durcan directed that the completed assessment be made available to Ms Godfrey and that she also write to the prison governor concerning his direction to have the assessment carried out.

Mr Ballard and Ms Bennett were in a relationship at the time of the alleged murder and Ms Bennett was a mother of two girls, aged nine and six from a previous relationship.

Judge Durcan remanded Mr Ballard in custody to reappear before Gort District Court today (Thursday, March 25th).

LANNING permission is being sought for 28 housing units in Lahinch and 21 housing units in Ennis.

Victoria Cross Retail Limited have applied for permission to build 28 housing units at Station Road, Lahinch.

It will consist of a mix of three two storey dwelling houses, eight dormer dwelling houses and 17 single storey dwelling houses, the latter aimed at accommodating older members of the community.

Separately Cormac and Declan Finn have applied for planning permission of 21 housing units at Doire Mor, Knockaderry, Ennis. This will consist of a mix of two storey three and four-bedroom dwellings as well as modifications to four existing gardens and modifications to the existing stormwater outfall.

The site was originally planned as a 42 residential unit by McInerney Properties in 2006, however the firm went into receivership and only 20 of the housing units were finished. A further four houses were partially completed but have been boarded up for a number of years. Finn Properties Limited intend to complete the four partially completed units as well as add the additional 21 proposed units.

Planning permission for both sites in Lahinch and Ennis is yet to be granted and submissions remain open.

Ennis Hospital Outpatients Department is relocating.

‘We need to survive to raise our children’ ta.

EART failure patients have stopped hugging their children following the reopening of schools with their fear of new COVID-19 variants escalating in recent weeks.

Ardnacrusha mother of three, Pauline O’Shea has not stopped showing affection for her children but is aware of other heart failure patients that have done so.

After collecting her children from school each day, Pauline douses the trio in sanitiser as they enter the car where the windows remain down until they return home and immediately change out of their uniform.

She is the founder of SCAD Ireland, an organisation that educates medical professionals and points out pathways for referrals for individuals diagnosed with Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) with research ongoing in the Mayo Clinic in Minneso-

“Sometimes people can get it after having a baby which is what happened to me or they can get it after exercising, the average age is 42 so it’s typically in a stage of life where you have a young family and are active or presenting with any cardiac issues, one day it just happens and your life goes upside down”.

The inability to correctly diagnose Pauline left lasting devastating effects.

“Because I was misdiagnosed for a prolonged period of time, in the interim I experienced three heart attacks and a cardiac arrest, it was the damage from the heart attacks and cardiac arrests that left me with a second condition which is heart failure”.

“It is unfortunate but it is reality, it is what happens when you are misdiagnosed, if you survive you live with the consequences and you’re grateful to be alive so I try to focus on the fact that I’m here,” the Kerry native told The Clare Echo.

Prior to the return of schools, Pauline discovered that her nine year old daughter was deeply fearful about contracting COVID-19 and giving it to her mother. “Your heart sinks, you

want to protect your children from worry, as a parent thinking your the source of that is dreadful. A lot of parents regardless of if your diagnosis has been out of your control or whatever, there is still a kind of a guilt, it brings up all kinds of negative emotions”.

Heart failure is an underlying condition and it comes as no surprise that Pauline is very worried about her exposure to the virus. She felt the 7000 individuals in Ireland with heart failure should be included in cohort four of the vaccine roll-out but at nobody’s expense and noted they are described as high-risk but not treated in the same vein.

Pauline concluded, “We need to survive and be around to raise our kids, a lot of us are living with other generations in the house with young children, teenagers or college going children, we can’t cocoon or do the safety that is recommended, they need to recognise there is a big leak in our bubble, they must help us fix the leak otherwise lives will be lost”.

Bishop hopeful for Easter Stan Lineen laid to rest in Kilmihil

by PÁRAIC McMAHON A REQUEST for easing of restrictions to have a “meaningful” Holy Week has been made by the Catholic Church to the Irish Government.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Bishop Fintan Monahan acknowledged: “It may not be at a possibility for Holy Week, if that is the case and we expect that it is the ceremonies will just be online like they were last year which will be disappointing but at the same time it is understandable,” Bishop Monahan conceded.

Should lower levels of restrictions be imposed, the Catholic Church are anxious that smaller gatherings be allowed in church settings. “Technically we’re not supposed to have people present until

Level 2 which could be way out there in summer, they did give us an exemption at Christmas time on Level 3 and that is why we had ceremonies at Christmas. We’re hopeful but it could be May or June before any meaningful gatherings of people will be there”.

He continued, “We’re hopeful and we have appealed to have gatherings for Easter, at this stage we don’t expect we will and it will be online. We hope some leeway will be given after that for the review on April 5th”.

Bishop Monahan encouraged parishioners to link in with online to pray over Easter if their request is denied. “The vaccine is very close to being at a level where it is getting much safer and that will come eventually.”

THE death occurred last week of one of Kilmihil's best known residents, Stan Lineen.

Stan, who was 61, won under 14 A (1973), minor A (1977) under 21 A and senior (both in 1980) football championships with his beloved Kilmihil. His brother Michael was also on that senior championship winning team He helped the club to a Cusack Cup (senior league) title in 1990. One of six Kilmihil club players to play under 21 football for Clare in 1979, he

shone at a variety of sports.

He played badminton with Kilmihil for a number of years and was also a key player for the Kilmihil based St. Pats soccer club and helped them to victory in the Clare cup.

When his football playing days were over, he turned his attention to golf. Stan was also a leader in the local youth club for many years. He also excelled at set dancing regularly competed in the Fleadh cheoil set dancing competitions.

"He always seemed to have time on the ball and that is an attribute of all good players.

He was an excellent defender", according to former club team mate and current Clare senior manager Colm Collins.

'Big black hole' left after Covid robs family of precious events PÁRAIC MCMAHON

IFE will never be the same for Shannon woman Donna McGettigan who was denied the opportunity of having a proper wedding and also from giving her late husband a fitting send-off.

Everyone in their own mind has ideas of what a family carer does from day to day. It is not until the situation hits your own front door that you become fully aware of exactly what is entailed in the role, Donna reflected.

"Although I thought I knew the life of a family carer, little did I know how hard it was until I was thrown into it by a disease called cancer".

Her partner Noel had been sick for some time, he was a frequent visitor to hospital.

"We had guessed he was gravely ill bit our lives were on hold until we got a diagnosis".

Then they were informed Noel had pancreatic cancer and between three to six months left to live, "such a short sentence but with long ramifications".

Marriage had been considered by the couple, his diagnosis accelerated their plans and on July 29th they tied the knot. Restric-

tions prevented the possibility of their close friends and family joining them for such a momentous occasion, Donna's son Jamie and Noel's daughter Louise were their only witnesses. She vividly recalls crying the words 'I do' on the occasion.

Unfortunately there was no honeymoon bliss for the newly-weds, instead Donna found herself as Noel's wife and carer, "it was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do," she admitted.

"I had to disconnect in order to be able to carry out my duties while watching someone I loved, someone I wanted to grow old with waste away in pain at times, suffering.

As Noel slowly lost abilities, my life as a carer became 24/7, having to do simple things like roll his cigarettes, holding Noel while he cried, laughing with him at memories, sometimes being so exhausted that you just stand in the shower crying, denied respite due to COVID-19, only allowing a small bubble to help which I will be eternally grateful for".

with COVID-19. She lamented "the whole debacle" whereby she was denied a test until Noel was deemed positive. When she was offered a test, Donna had to leave Noel "at home on his own, terminally ill and with COVID-19, so I could drive to Ennis to be tested. We beat COVID-19 despite the odds, it did however take its toll, it stole our energy".

When restrictions intensified life became tougher for the couple. The Belfast native said it denied Noel's friends and family the chance "to come and say goodbye, to have that last chat, that last match, that last movie, that last time to say I love you".

Around this time, a nurse from Milford Care Centre assisted Donna in caring for Noel as he required the attention of two people 24 hours a day.

Sadly, their time together ended at the beginning of March when Noel died peacefully at home in Purcell Park. Donna is content with her decision to have cared for Noel herself but looks back with anger on the precious moments they were deprived of.

"While I do not regret keeping Noel at home and would do it all again if it meant I got to look into his eyes, I am so angry and frustrated that we were robbed of a big wedding, robbed by having everyone around in those final months, as a carer not even being considered in the vaccine rollout.

"But the cruellest, saddest thing was having only 10 people at Noel's funeral. Because we have not been strong on testing and tracing, vaccine roll out, people being able to fly in and out of our country, we had to tell some of Noel's family that they could not attend his funeral, we will never get that time back, a big black hole sits in our lives and I never want to see anyone else have to go through that horrendous day again," she told The Clare Echo.

A CLARE councillor has highlighted with the HSE instances of individuals with suicidal thoughts being discharged from hospitals in Ennis and Limerick.

Cases of patients being discharged despite having suicidal thoughts were referenced by Cllr Susan Crawford (GP) as she put forward the argument for increased in-hospital support for each county during the pandemic.

"Professionals working in Ennis General have asked that further support be provided particularly to address those with acute psychiatric illness and distress," she commented.

Both Acute Psychiatric Units (Unit 5B at University Hospital Limerick and APU at Ennis Hospital "remain open to people requiring acute hospital treatment in the Mid West.

Additional capacity has been secured with a Private Hospital should the need arise for the Mid West to have access to additional beds. To date there has been no require-

ment/demand to access the additional beds secured," Chief Officer of Mid West Community Healthcare Maria Bridgeman stated.

Speaking at a meeting of Regional Health Forum West, Cllr Crawford detailed that there were "a couple of cases" where persons were discharged from Ennis and Limerick with suicidal thoughts, "one had a tragic outcome," she reflected. The supports inhouse are not sufficient, one doctor told the North Clare representative. She questioned if GPs were made aware of the additional capacity secured from private hospitals.

No change has been made to the referral process, Bridgeman explained. She confirmed that consultants were aware of the additional capacity.

"We have secured a number of beds in a private facility which are available to us if and when we need them. It was a challenge at one point in relation to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the acute psychiatric unit, maybe that is where one of the queries have come, admissions were not possible at that time".

'Becoming a mother is the biggest priority for women’ CIAN O’BROIN

OR many women looking to conceive and start a family in their late thirties, fertility treatments are often the last line when faced with a ticking biological clock.

Clonlara resident, Dr. Niamh Cummins, a public health researcher at University Hospital Limerick believes that COVID-19 has presented an extraordinary challenge through a lack of access to fertility services as well as state and family support.

Niamh suffered from a chronic illness for years, meaning that she and her husband Charles were unable to start a family for a long time.

One of the most difficult parts of the process, was watching their friends start families, with many having two or three children at this stage. "I was thinking it was

never going to happen for me," she admitted. She recalled being questioned by everyone, on their intention of starting a family. "It might be something so small, but that question alone can drive a dagger into your heart."

Following the resolution of her illness at 37, Niamh worried about whether she had gotten too old to conceive. After attending a fertility test at a private clinic, she received bad news. Her fertility levels were lower than expected for someone of her age. She was told by doctors that there was only a few months of a window to conceive and after that In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) would be the only option.

"It was difficult to be told this on top of recovering from a chronic illness and the cravings that I had for a child, for years. We started trying naturally and then miraculously, I became pregnant. It was a difficult pregnancy but fortunately Cathal arrived safely on January 2, 2020."

Unbeknownst to Niamh and Charles, a second surprise came

when Niamh took a pregnancy test later that summer. Tragically, Niamh miscarried seven weeks into her second pregnancy. Devastated by the news, Niamh turned to a friend for moral support and now advocates for the importance of women in speaking up about fertility issues. She urges those that are struggling to reach out and speak to those in a similar position.

"Fertility issues and miscarriages can be a lonely place to be. One in four suffer from an early pregnancy loss," she added.

In 2017, cabinet passed a bill on assisted human reproduction in Ireland. The crux of the issue, Niamh informed, is that it is not state regulated but only through private centres. For many, options like IVF can cost entire life savings.

"In late 2019, former Health Minister Simon Harris committed to six hubs nationally for public provision of fertility treatment.

Since COVID, it has not been a priority for them.

'I was the obvious choice' A FOUNDING member of the Irish Freedom Party, Michael Leahy has said he was the "obvious choice" to replace Dolores Cahill as the party's Chairperson, writes Páraic McMahon.

Professor Cahill who is a faculty member at the UCD School of Medicine resigned from the role on Sunday night. The Tipperary woman claimed last week that the "lockdown is based on lies" and has regularly questioned the science behind the wearing of face masks during the pandemic.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Corofin resident Leahy said: "Professor Cahill is a very capable person, we were lucky to have her

for a period of time but I would not consider her departure to be a blow".

Her departure was a mutual decision, Michael said with the party no longer content to stand by her views while Dolores was not willing "to remain quiet on the issue" of vaccinations. He was voted in as Chairman following her departure. "When we parted ways with Professor Cahill I was the obvious choice".

Michael who was a board member of An Bord Pleanála and spent time living in Kilrush is keen to ensure the party is better organised nationally. There is one cumann of the Irish Freedom Party in Ennis.

The cyber world has many advantages when it comes to providing students with opportunities to be innovative, creative and expressive. The Here Comes the Sun project, has filled a void for students who wish to express themselves in a visual and artistic platform.

In conjunction with the Clare Education Centre, Clare Sports Partnership, Clare Age Friendly Programme and the Clare County Council, the Here Comes the Sun Committee (Darryl Eade, Moira Murrihy, Gary Walsh, Gary Tyrrell & Natasha Coughlan) invited primary and secondary school students across Clare to be part of this exciting new initiative. Here Comes the Sun is a Keep Well initiative supported by the Clare County Council. This initiative com-

bines sport, music, film and poetry to offer a snap shot of what life during Covid 19 is like for people in Clare. This project was a resounding success with students from Killaloe to Kilfenora contributing video clips, poetry and short stories. Music plays a central role in this project which features musical performances from the Farrell family in New Quay and Craig Pete from Shannon.

This project also features a few well known faces from across County Clare which viewers will be more than familiar with.

The first of two productions was released on Friday the 19th of March. Part One paints a bleak picture of the realities faced by people during lockdown. Part Two, which is due for release on Friday the 26th of March celebrates communities across County Clare, fills people with hope and instils pride in the county. by PÁRAIC McMAHON N IMPASSE has been reached in Parteen with a decommissioning notice from Clare County Council issued surrounding the development of a wind turbine ignored thus far.

Earlier this month, Clare County Council ordered a local developer to decommission and remove a wind turbine and base structure in Parteen before April 8th.

Clare County Council detailed that the turbine was not situated at the location permitted. A warning was issued to the developer that he may be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding €5000 or for a six month imprisonment.

Although Clare TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) informed ESB Networks of the enforcement notice, locals have told The Clare Echo that ESB were spotted on site attempting to connect to the national grid subsequent to this.

Parteen resident Ger Gavin admitted his biggest concern surrounding the development was its proximity to the local primary school.

"I was never aware it was going up or that planning permission had been passed from conversations at the local bar, at mass or up at the school, I was driving home one day from the doctors and I saw this construction coming out of nowhere".

He does not believe the developer has taken heed of the enforcement notice "My own thought is that a lot of money was invested in it and I don't see it being taken down but we will have to see what happens".

Driving test backlog is ‘chaotic’

A CLARE TD has described the backlog for driving tests and lessons as chaotic.

Fears of a seven month wait for driving tests were voiced by Deputy Violet-Anne Wynne (SF) in a statement to The Clare Echo. She believed the introduction of a range of measures was necessary to deal with the backlog.

The Clare Echo has learned that over 3,200 people are scheduled to take the driver theory test in the coming month in Clare. There are currently 1,403 candidates eligible to sit a driving test with 79 scheduled to take a test in the county.

Last October, the Road Safety Authority requested approval for 80 additional testers. A spokesperson for the Department of Transport told The Clare Echo the hiring of a further 40 temporary testers for 22 months has been approved with the recruitment process underway.

“These new hires will also be in addition to the 36 temporary testers which were previously sanctioned by the Department for rehire during 2020”.

Approval of extra testers, longer opening hours and running more tests per day must also be considered along with moving the driver theory test online, the Kilrush woman outlined.

Cycle lanes requested

by PÁRAIC McMAHON INTRODUCTION of segregated cycle lanes on all main approach roads into the county town has been solicited by the Mayor of Ennis.

Funding to introduce segregated cycle lanes on the Kilrush Rd, Lahinch Rd, Gort Rd, Quin Rd and from Clarecastle needs to be applied for by Clare County Council “through one of the relevant funding streams recently announced by Minister Eamon Ryan,” Cllr Paul Murphy proposed at a recent sitting of the Ennis Municipal District.

Oversight for the Active Travel Fund is in the hands of the National Transport Authority (NTA), senior executive engineer with Clare County Council, John Gannon explained. The fund is part of the overall Sustainable Transport Measures Grant (STMG) programme recently announced by Government.

Improving the cycling infrastructure across the county including the provision of segregated cycle lanes “where appropriate” remains “an ambition” of the local authority, Gannon added.

VER €4m in funding has been granted towards the Ennis Town Centre Public Realm Regeneration Project while Shannon has lost out in bids to secure an allocation.

Ennis was among the successful applicants under the Government’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).

Rejuvenation of O’Connell Square, High Street, Bank Place, Barrack St and Old Barrack Square will result following the funding approval. The project has an overall cost of €5,390,391 with 75 per cent of the cost being granted funded under the URDF, and the remainder financed by Clare County Council.

More recycling facilities sought

ABSENCE of waste recycling facilities “on the southern side of Ennis” have led to calls for the installation of a bottle bank to cater for residents in this part of town.

An appeal to find a “suitable location” which will allow for glass, cans, plastics and clothes to be recycled in the southern part of Ennis was voiced by Cllr Mary Howard (FG) at the March meeting of the Ennis Municipal District.

Five civic amenity sites located in Ennis, Inagh, Lisdeen, Scariff and Shannon offer “a geographical spread across the county,” senior executive engineer with Clare County Council Brendan Flynn stated. “In addition, we also operate 50 bring bank facilities which are situated in many of our towns and villages, the majority of these can be accessed 24 hours a day”.

Ennis has bring bank facilities at Ennis Leisure Centre and on Francis St which Flynn outlined was “the most southerly location in Ennis” and “encompasses all of the Southern Ennis area within a 3km radius”.

He highlighted that a bring bank is also located at Deasy’s Centra in Clarecastle, the 3km radius of which stretches into Station Rd in Ennis. A commitment to work towards

securing a suitable location was expressed by the engineer.

Residents of Collins Park and Tobearteascáin that have carried out litter picks brought the matter to the attention of Cllr Howard.

“They would like to be able to bring their bottles to a local bank as opposed to going to Tesco”. Cllr Howard suggested the car park at the back of Ryan’s Centra which is 1.3km from the bring bank on Francis St and 3.2km from the Clarecastle equivalent be used.

“They want to do something good which we need to embrace,” she stated. Support for the proposal was echoed by Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) who underlined it as “a great idea”.

Inclusion of the south-west should be considered in a review Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) noted, while details of the costing and who fits the bill was queried by the Quin native. She was informed that a mix of grant aid and local authority funding cover the costs.

SHORTAGE of serviced sites in Shannon to construct private housing developments is leading to more younger people leaving the town, elected representatives have

warned.

Addressing the March meeting of the Shannon Municipal District, senior executive officer Jason Murphy outlined that the “housing situation” is under examination. As part of this, viewings of zoned lands are taking place.

Along with sourcing more housing options, the need to cater for step-down housing must also form part of the Council’s thinking, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) stated. “We need to identify sites within the town for serviced sites, young people are unable to build homes, it is something that needs to be addressed”.

There is “significant demand” for serviced sites in Shannon, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) detailed. He outlined, “There is significant demand for private sites in Shannon but they are not available”. This shortage was also voiced by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND). “I have been approached by constituents looking for serviced sites but they are not available”.

Projected population growths necessitate the need for a policy on the matter, Cathaoirleach of the Shannon MD, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) believed. “We are in a huge growth area, the projections from Government on population of this county are going to grow, into the future we will have to have a policy of serviced sites for them to be bought into heavy serviced areas. We have to push a policy”.

Tenure and housing balance between public and private mix has been regularly brought to the table, Director of Service Liam Conneally acknowledged. “We are building communities and as such we should be having a good mix on all tenures of housing. We have a significant land bank in Shannon, we will be looking at more recent Government proposals on housing”.

He revealed that the local authority would be interested in releasing some of their land bank for housing. The Director of Economic Development highlighted that topographical surveys and other steps must be taken to avoid getting “caught up in planning”.

Delight for Denis with recognition from Concern

'UNEXPECTED but delighted' summarised how Denis Bates felt at being honoured for his voluntary work by Concern.

From Shannon, Denis was awarded with a silver medal at last year's Concern Volunteer Awards for his involvement in the charity's debating competition.

Denis is a volunteer judge for the national school debating competition in which hundreds of schools participate. Previously

he was also a mentor for the debate team at CBS Sexton Street in Limerick City where he taught for many years.

His involvement with the charity goes all the way back 1975 when he worked alongside Concern as a school principal in rural Kenya. He later got directly involved with the charity in 1985 when Concern Debates began in Ireland.

Denis says the award was "unexpected" but that it was a "delight to be recognised in that way". He also expressed his admiration for the Concern Debates competition saying "Of all the debating forms for schools Concern was by far the best run and most supportive of students".

"I am delighted and honoured with this award," he admitted. "The Concern Debates is an excellent forum for young debaters.

Many students have taken part and along the way they have learned a lot about development issues around the world. It gives them the confidence and courage to speak out in public."

Concern debates has been running for nearly 40 years as a way of teaching school aged children debate and public speaking skills as well as educating them about issues in the world today.

Concern was formed in 1968 as a part of a major humanitarian response to the Biafran famine in Nigeria.

Living in Tullyvarraga, Denis continues to be involved in Concern Debates even this year when the debates have been forced to go fully online. The competition is currently in its quarter final stage.

AHINCH singer and vocal coach Dora Gola is about to release Dark Sand, a brand-new electronic pop single exploring the power of the earth and its connection to feminine energy.

Arriving in Ireland 13 years ago from Poland, Dora recalls landing on the beach in Lahinch and feeling an instant connection to the pull of the ocean.

"Coming from a big city, I had never seen the ocean before. It was a nine-hour drive away. Arriving here and standing on the beach for the very first time, I said to myself, I really want to live here."

After studying Voice and Dance at the University of Limerick and a subsequent master's degree in music in Cork, she set up a singing school called Voice Progress Lahinch. The pandemic has meant that lessons now take place online, on a oneto-one basis.

Having previously released an EP, Dora decided to use the pandemic as a blank canvas to reinvent her image and place in the music industry. Always an enthusiast of both song and dance, her first furore in show business led to a neglect of her love for movement. Following on from confirmation last week that The Clare Echo is the most read newspaper in the county as per an audit from ABC, the profile of the media outlet continues to

rise. Eagle eyed viewers of RTÉ soap opera Fair City, noticed the character of Orla Molloy played by Sorcha Furlong taking time out in Carrigstown to read an edition of the paper (pictured below left).

Jim's Roofing which has become synonymous for its extensive advertising on the backpage of The Clare Echo was visible to viewers of the RTÉ soap. A potential appearance of Jim cleaning the roofs of Carrigstown's residents such as Carol Foley, Paul Brennan and Bela Doyle has not been ruled out.

Sources close to The Clare Echo have said that management are believed to be plotting to get a copy of the paper to Summer Bay for Home and Away icon Alf Stewart to have a glance over while sipping on his morning cuppa at the Diner.

Kildysart Drama look back on 21 years of treading the boards

by ELAINE TUBRIDY KILDYSART Drama Society is celebrating 21 years of success from their very first production of 'Sive' in 1999 to 'Nobody's talking to me' in 2019. They are taking a look back at some of their best and funniest moments down through the years.

A short 35 minute documentary produced by one of their youngest members Kevin Meaney, assisted by Sarah Walsh, showcases Kildysart Drama in all its glory.

“The documentary takes us up close and personal with some of the group’s most loved characters. The drama group was delighted with the prospect of an event being held this year,”said a spokesperson for the drama group.

“They reminisce on some of their fondest memories, many mistakes, and of course, they couldn't go without spilling the beans on some untold secrets and dishing out the backstage gossip. They explain what Kildysart Drama means to them and the wider community. If there's one

thing Kildysart Drama can always guarantee, it is entertainment, and this show is no different,” continued the spokesperson.

Kildysart Drama Society was founded in 1998 by Colin McMahon, a teacher from Limerick who moved to Kildysart in the late 1990s. Kildysart drama has gone from strength to strength over the years, from investing in the development of the local area and attracting larger audiences each year to their productions.

The society now attracts approximately 1,500 audience members over the course of 5 shows each year. The performances generate funding for the village as well

as local projects and charities.

The group started with a handful of members including Michael Keane, Grace Kelly, and Geraldine O’Connell, Therese McGoldrick and Paudie Clancy. The club has a core group of loyal members that have been there since the very beginning.

Many new members have joined over the years consisting of all age ranges, from people in their 80s down to enthusiastic teenagers. The Society now has a strong group of over 30 members. New members are always welcome.

A screening of the documentary will take place on March 27 at 8:00 pm via YouTube. All attendees can register on Eventbrite. ie. This event is free of charge.

ATIONAL Tree Week is an opportunity to be curious about your relationship with the world wide web of nature and celebrate the importance of one of the most vital components in our ecosystem.

Hometree, located in Silverhill, Glendine Valley, Clare, is a tree planting charity that has flourished by rooting itself in this very idea.

Founder Matt Smith decided to set up Hometree along with Mitchell Corbett in 2015 as a means of connecting people to trees and the natural world. Originally from Cornwall but living in Clare since 2007, Matt is also widely known for cofounding regenerative agriculture farm, Moy Hill CLG. In 2020, he decided to leave Moy Hill in a bid to focus solely on Hometree and its three main aims: afforestation, conservation and education.

“We initially set it up so that organisations could make a pledge to plant a tree and we would maintain and protect it throughout the course of its life. Since then, there has been a lot of interest in what we do in terms of landscape regeneration, supporting biodiversity as well as pest and disease control.

Covid-19 has been difficult, but we are still out there planting and running online workshops,” Matt stated.

Conversations about trees are essential in building awareness. Matt outlined the

decline in trees in Ireland that has led the country going from 80 per cent forested, to just one per cent today.

Hometree has planted over 30,000 pioneer trees like scots pine, willow and alder, while hundreds of volunteers have contributed both time and effort.

Matt informed that the registered charity is going to have its first official employees, later this year.

A highly qualified board of advisors and directors assist in ecological decisions and are firmly committed to natural abundance.

Matt asserted that this body of expertise allows for effective planning around bigger sites.

“Sometimes trees are seen as this silver bullet. Sometimes not planting is in fact the best decision for the land. It’s not good to be fixated on one single solution. We understand the value of permanent woodlands here and Clare has some of the most beautiful in the country.”

In terms of afforestation, Hometree acquire land and look at bringing back biodiversity. The registered charity supports the eco-system by planting the riparian zones by rivers, which has knock on effects on water quality.

Conservation is the second strand. This includes protecting existing woodlands and individual trees. Matt alluded to the weighing up of benefits to the ecosystem, stating that often a 300-year-old oak can be more beneficial than hundreds of one year old saplings.

The final strand is education. Hundreds of children and individuals come to learn the importance of Hometree’s work in agroforestry and how it helps producer high-

er yields and better grass growth. This is a technique that has been used internationally for decades.

“We are delighted to be part of a growing national movement around expanding natural woodlands. It’s nice to be able to inspire people with nature. We must all appreciate and enjoy the trees we have around us.

“My first love was growing vegetables at Moy Hill but I decided to leave it behind to focus solely on this. It wasn’t an easy decision. Now I speak to nearly 200 people per week, educating and informing them on planting practices.

We have a big vision for the future here and want to continue to help people develop their relationship with nature,” he concluded.

’M GOING to court controversy this week and give a recipe for Steak Tartare. For those of you not in the know, that’s raw fillet steak served with chopped vegetables basically.

People tend to freak out when it comes to this dish, when really there is no need.

It is however important to use the best ingredients available. Use whole lean beef from your butcher.

Tell them what you want it for and that you need good fresh beef.

Also make sure you use pasteurised eggs as you will also be eating a raw yolk with this recipe.

If you are pregnant or immuno compromised then you shouldn’t eat this recipe.

Also keep all of your ingredients in the fridge until you are using them.

YOU WILL NEED: • 100g organic beef fillet • 2 cornichon, finely chopped • 1/2 tsp capers, rinsed and drained, finely chopped

Step 1 Trim any fatty bits or sinew from your steak and then chop it finely or dice it up into small cubes.

HIS week I had a zoom call with Elaine Ryan and Associates HR and Business Consultants about the new code of practice issued by the Workplace Relations Commission and the Health and Safety Authority about anti-bullying in all workplace locations, including working from home and mobile locations.

I really wanted to write about this because I think it will be extremely helpful and informative for businesses. This new code of practice provides you with information about what to do and what not to do in terms of managing the workplace.

I was horrified at the idea.

Risk assessments should be carried out for health and safety purposes during and post Covid 19 for those employees who have a disability, or are medically susceptible or compromised.

CONTACT PERSON Appoint a suitable and supportive contact person who is a good listener and ensure they are trained and are very educated on the anti-bullying policy. This person would be an approachable person and would act as a first responder for anyone enquiring about bullying and would offer confidential guidance in line with the workplace policies. This person would not have any further role in the investigation of complaints.

The main goal is to promote anti-bullying culture when creating your anti-bullying policy and to ensure your workplace environment is safe and positive for everyone. Employers should review their workplace practices and procedures. This column is only some of the information about this code of practice.

AM an Irish republican and I strongly believe that the only way to deliver on the promise of the 1916 Proclamation to 'cherish all of the children of the nation equally' is through the delivery of a 32 county Irish republic.

Several studies and reports in recent years have shown that Irish Unity would boost the economy of the whole island.

Dr Kurt Hubner, of Vancouver University, estimates that in eight years following unification the economy would grow by over €36 Billion.

In a recent book, David McWilliams wrote "In short, in pure budgetary terms, there is little doubt that the Republic's economy could absorb the North, even before the commercial dynamism of unification kicks in."

As we now face the fallout of Brexit, the reality of British jurisdiction over part of our nation means that in a few months part of Ireland will be inside the EU and part will be outside. There will be dreadful impacts on businesses here

plan. Pandemics do not observe borders. We have an all-Ireland approach to animal health, but not to human health.

This crazy situation arises because six counties of Ireland are ruled by Britain and by a Tory government that was never elected by people in this country.

Recent opinion polls, North and South, have

consistently shown support for Irish Unity. Unionist political parties in the North no longer have a majority at election time.

In the Brexit referendum, the people in the six counties voted solidly to remain in the EU. All of these indicate that people would consider changing the constitutional arrangement, and vote for Unity, but it won't happen unless we plan for it and make it happen.

We have had a hundred years of the division of partition. It's time to build a real, national, Republic that treats everyone equally.

Irish Unity is a threat to nobody. It offers the potential of a better future for all our citizens, including the unionist community.

Partition has been bad for us all. It has damaged the economy of all of Ireland for a hundred years.

Irish Unity is now a doable project.

Irish Unity will be good for everyone. It's not just an issue for the North.

It's an issue for everyone, from Clare to Dublin, and Kerry to Derry, and beyond.

I

N DAYS gone by, the easiest way to ascertain someone’s political leanings in this country was to ask them, “where do you stand on the national question?”.

Whereas this turn of phrase has since largely fallen out of use, it is inevitable that it will make a comeback in the not-so-distant future.

As demographics change in Northern Ireland, and in the wake of a divisive Brexit result, which the North voted against, there are growing calls for a renewed examination of the constitutional position of Northern Ireland.

The Good Friday Agreement allows for a referendum on the status of Northern Ireland, or Border Poll as it is more commonly called, to be arranged by the British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, should they feel such a poll is warranted. The last round of NI Assembly elections saw the Unionist MLAs lose their majority for the first time.

This is a sure sign that the green vs orange politics of old are fading away with non-aligned parties like Alliance and PBP making ground and taking new seats.

Subsequent Westminster elections and recent polls have shown that this trend has continued as the centre ground in the North continues to strengthen and grow. But does this mean it is now a good time for a Border Poll?

In short, no. If one were to hold a vote tomorrow, it would most likely be defeated, thereby setting back the reunification movement by decades. As we learned from Brexit, going into such a massive constitutional referendum without knowing the future consequences on the other side is perilous and can lead to disaster.

On the contrary, our experiences here with

by Oireachtas committees preparing legislation in advance of any referendum, so people know exactly what they are voting on, gives assurance and can bring people along which previously may have been hesitant. In short, I believe that those calling for a Border Poll now, although ideological and enthusiastic, are jumping the gun.

Such an approach will only serve to alienate moderate people from a traditionally unionist background and even those non-aligned that have grown accustom to certain public services like the NHS and having a large say in the legislative process which may become diluted in a United Ireland.

The Taoiseach did inaugurate the Shared Island unit in his Department on taking up office last July, but this is yet to produce any concrete proposals or results. His Fianna Fáil backbench colleague Jim O’Callaghan (inset), though, spoke this week at his alma mater, Cambridge University, outlining a position paper of his own that would see the island take up a somewhat federalist approach in the event of unity.

O’Callaghan is not the first Fianna Fáil politician to do a large volume of work on the prospect of a United Ireland.

Senator Mark Daly also produced a detail financial analysis as to the cost of such a unification, in doing so dispelling many myths about the supposed cost being too great.

It was based on many assumptions, mind you, but the logic was sound.

Nevertheless, Míchéal Martin remains hesitant

to discuss any such grand plans of unity with growing threats of violence from Loyalist gangs and poor EU-UK relations playing front and centre in his mind.

That said, it is still remiss of him and his Government not to be more forthcoming on the promise to progress unity planning.

Not only was this a promise to the wider electorate ahead of the 2020 election, but a distinct promise to his own members ahead of the Programme for Government vote. As Sinn Féin continue to beat the Border Poll drum, hoping to simply win a Catholic versus Protestant headcount, Fianna Fáil has a real opportunity here.

The party is stagnant with many members across the island refusing to renew their membership at the end of 2020, unhappy with party communications and performance in Government. A return of the party to the forefront of conversation on the national question is exactly what they need.

If Fianna Fáil can establish themselves as the only party with a concrete plan to delivery an inclusive United Ireland it would not only reinvigorate the party membership but grow popularity with a new cohort of younger voters for whom a 32-county state is a viable goal to be aiming for.

The first stage in that process is planning. If FF cede this to SF, who presently do not seem to have any realistic UI plans of their own, they will be giving up one of the few unique characteristics it could possibly boast in what has become a crowded political field in Ireland.

The main reason the political centre ground in the Republic is receding is because of a lack of a grand, bold vision. What could be more bold or grand an idea, than a one state island?

Thought for the week

T

HE first few months of our calendar year along with dreaded lockdowns and restrictions because of the Coronavirus can be dark, debilitating and dreary.

It seems to make some people feel very depressed and down and contemplate doing drastic things.

Say a prayer and light a candle for whoever needs one or anyone that is worried or in pain at this time especially anyone badly affected by the Coronavirus or any illness, mental illness and the worry that it brings. It's OK to ask for help or to talk to someone you trust or who cares for you.

Please mind yourself, look after yourself, love yourself and love others. Let's smash the mental anguish stigma that sometimes surrounds us all! Talk to a family member, a friend, a neighbour, a relative, a colleague and ask them if they're doing ok.

Mental illness is often easy to conceal, but never easy to escape.

Please reader, love yourself—accept yourself—forgive yourself—and be good to yourself, because without you the rest of us are without a source of many wonderful and amazing things. People and I mean me and you, all of us need to reach out, to have a chat, to have a conversation, to have a walk and talk with ourselves and with each other so that we all know that we are doing OK!

Reach Out

I have found out over time and especially over the last year of lockdowns because of the Coronavirus that it is so important to acknowledge to yourself how you are truly feeling. Also, to check how your family, friends and colleagues are feeling at times. It is so important to not only identify, but also to verify our feelings. Be honest about how you feel even if you don't think people will understand or relate or care.

I can't count the number of times someone has asked me how I am and I respond with "I am good" or "I am the finest" when I'm really not. It's my automatic response to that type of question. And it doesn't do me any good.

It doesn't make me feel better, sometimes I feel worse for not being honest. I try to go to my local church mass every evening, if I am in the vicinity, and it is there that I have my chat with God!!! I learn to acknowledge the negative feelings and offer them up.

I have learned not to be afraid to admit that I am having a bad day or

a rough week, or a hard month or that I am totally fed up of these restrictions and lockdowns. It's okay.

We all have them at some point.

That's life as they say.

What I'm still learning to do though, is not sink into the feeling.

That's when it becomes difficult for me to get out of the situation or rut that I might find myself in.

I remind myself that I will feel better at some point and my personal faith in God through prayer helps me get myself back out of the dark place that I might be in and out into the light again.

A few other things that help me is, a good night sleep usually does the trick.

Or going for a walk or a run. Or writing things out on paper or doing what I am doing now, writing a thought for the week. Sometimes I call one of my closest friend's Paul, because I know he will tell me jokes and lift my spirits. It's important, I think, well in my case anyway to find something that works for you so you don't get stuck in the "not okayness" for too long.

The motto for the "Cycle against Suicide" Charity says, "It's okay to not be okay", I have found during this journey of life and indeed over the last year of the Cooronavirus with its lockdowns and restrictions that it's alright to reach out to people and say, "hey I'm kind of in a bad way here right now and I was wondering if you could say an extra prayer for me or light a candle for me or give me one of your great hug's or I need your ear for a few hours can you listen?"

It's okay for us to answer the question, "How are things?" to say "not so good, can you help me out?". It's okay to let people see you cry, it doesn't mean you are weak, it means you have enough courage to not hide who you are. It's okay to need someone to sit with you in silence for a while just because you can't be alone.

It's okay to have those days where you don't accomplish anything because you just don't want to go out the front door. What's not okay is not wanting it to change. What's not okay is not asking for help and support.

So please reach out for help, say a prayer, light a candle, sing out loud to your favourite song, enjoy some coffee or tea with a good and close friend, read one of your favourite books, call a friend and don't be afraid to get help from a charity or from a professional body.

I really believe that saying a problem shared can be a problem halved and when we share our problems with someone who truly cares, or

with a qualified professional we can get help and support.

Then go take on the world because, you know you can do it. Please love yourself—accept yourself—forgive yourself—and be good to yourself, because you are awesome.

Courage to be Honest

Let me be honest with you as I write this thought, which I always do after I have lit a candle and said a prayer for all who will read it.

I am definitely not okay at times and I am totally and utterly fed up of lockdowns and restrictions and the losing of so many family members and friends during this awful time of the Coronavirus. At times I need help.

I need support. I need care. I need love. At times I feel wrecked.

There I said it! We should all say it if we feel that way and have a good honest to God chat about how we feel at times. At times I am not okay. I do get stressed, and I worry at times excessively.

I worry about my family, my friends, my work colleagues and I worry about the things I have to achieve with work. At times I am sad and sometimes confused. I can be distant.

At times I worry that I may not have the resources or wisdom to help my family through the journey of life or to get out the far side of the Coronavirus. Indeed there are times when I feel alone albeit that I am surrounded by loving and caring people. I get upset about things in life and in our world, particularly the many injustices in society. So at times I am not okay. At times we are all not okay.

And you know what. That's okay.

Because I know I won't always feel this way. As my good friend David used to say to me regularly before he sadly passed away during the last year, "This too shall pass."

Giving myself time, I will figure things out. I will discover or rediscover my purpose or focus in life. I will be okay. I am learning to forgive myself for not being perfect.

And I'm learning to forgive myself for not always being okay.

Because right now as I write this thought for the week, I'm not. But I also know that I have the ability to change that and that who I am makes a difference for good in our world.

As your thought for the week, remember, everything will be okay if we love and believe in ourselves, and understand that hope floats around us and when we can we should always spread that hope and love with others especially those who mean the most to us.

Please everyone look after yourself and one another and don't be afraid to be good to yourself and always remember how truly awesome you are.

Farming columnist Joe Melody believes farmers need to show due diligence for any agri-environmental scheme that may arise in the near future

ALK of a new agri-environmental scheme is making news of late. The murmurings are that it will pay farmers an average of €4,500 or a top payment of €6,900.

This should be music to our ears but in some cases there is an opportunity cost with these schemes i.e. in managing the land designated to the scheme in a more flexible way. There is also much bureaucracy attached so farmers ought to do their due diligence on whatever scheme arises.

I often feel that although these schemes are well intentioned at their best, at their worst they are green washing box ticking exercises by government. If a farmer is sacrificing their time and resources they ought to be remunerated for it as it is all amounting to a social good in encouraging a healthy environment for not just our flora and fauna but all of us who inhabit this island.

Environmental stewardship schemes don’t just affect the farmer financially. In these strained times for small businesses, it is worth remembering that farmers nationally spend €4bn on farm inputs within a 35km radius of the farm while the farm household is spending a further €4bn on living expenses which goes to local towns and villages. Farmers seem to have a similar mantra to a former Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy who said “when I have it, I’ll spend it” speaking of his attitude to budgetary spending. This is exactly what our SMEs will want coming out of this shutdown of business, economic stimulus. What better way than channelling that money through our most reliable spenders?

However farmers must be rewarded for his time and labours for these environmental stewardship type schemes. It always strikes me that in many cases farming is a white collar profession that pays a blue collar salary. In the past there have been REPs schemes that have made a tangible differ-

ence to the aesthetic of the nation’s farms and farmyards by planting trees and hedgerows as well as supporting farmers in painting old sheds and hay barns. These were good schemes that were replaced by various different iterations right up to GLAS today of which we are participants in on our own farm.

Back in Bunratty the focus is all on grass now, we measured the farm’s cover of grass during the week and there is 620kg of dry matter of grass per hectare on the first paddock we grazed in late January and early February. We need these paddocks to have at least 1,100kg dm/ha on them before we can commence our second round of grazing, so we will continue to monitor the grass supply situation carefully going into April.

April is a make or break month. If it goes well, we will hopefully have gone a long way to setting up our cows well for the coming breeding season. Hopefully we will also have set up the farm well to grow plenty of high quality grass to keep the cows on a rising plane of nutrition going into breeding season. It is simple in theory but like most things in life, it is about doing the ordinary things in an extraordinary way.

"Workers did not cause pandemic yet they are struggling financially. It is an unfair tax".

"It is most ironic that the people on the bottom rung of the ladder had this tax bill. These people have lost their employment, reliant on PUP to survive and the last thing they need is a tax bill," Cllr McMahon outlined.

RAMATIC drops in the level of income among the Clare public has led to three local elected representatives seeking a waiver of the tax bill for workers on the pandemic payment.

Citing "the hardship suffered by people on the average industrial wage" that experienced a dramatic drop to their income having went on the temporary wage subsidy scheme and the pandemic unemployment payment, Cllr Pat Daly (FF), Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) and Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) called on the Irish Government to waive the tax bill associated with the COVID-19 support schemes.

Around 420,000 people in Ireland were issued with bills as a result of payments they received under the two schemes.

71% of those in receipt of the TWSS in 2020 underpaid tax and received a tax bill. Just 33% of those who received the PUP will have to pay up, while 48% will actually be entitled to a refund.

LARE Oireachtas members have criticised the manner in which a North Clare woman became the interim chairperson of the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA).

Five months after her twelve month contract extension as the Chair of Shanon Group concluded, Rose Hynes was announced by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan (GP) as the IAA's interim chairperson.

The period will last until the IAA is split into two when the Air Navigation and Transport Bill is enacted, she will be entitled to apply to become Chair of either of the new bodies.

Assistant Secretary at the Department of Transport Fintan Towey informed a sitting of the Joint Oireachtas committee on Transport and Communications Networks that the New Quay woman came into the role after a vacancy "occurred at short notice".

He later clarified that it was known Hynes' predecessor was stepping down two months prior to her appointment and that a decision was made in December to fill the post

with an interim chair.

No list of candidates was produced to fill the vacancy but three persons were considered for the role.

"The average punter looking in will ask why two or three people sat in a room, tossed around a few names, did an eeny, meeny, miny, moe and picked an individual.

That does not look good in terms of transparency at the level we are dealing with it.

Quite frankly, it looks appalling," Senator Timmy Dooley (FF) remarked. He said the process was "a major lapse in good governance".

Deputy Joe Carey (FG) queried if Ms Hynes had assumed the position or if another step was required. Towey confirmed Ms Hynes was chairing IAA meetings, taking executive decisions and being remunerated.

Confusion and frustration were sentiments expressed by Deputy Cathal Crowe (FF) who felt the appointment was "out of sync" with other appointments.

Treatment of journalists in Mid-West highlighted

by PÁRAIC McMAHON SEVERAL journalists in the Mid-West have been treated inappropriately by their employers, a Clare Senator has highlighted.

Iconic Newspapers own more local and regional newspaper than any other media company in Ireland including The Limerick Leader, The Tipperary Star, The Kilkenny People and The Donegal Democrat.

The Clare Echo understands that up 10 members of staff in Mid-West titles owned

by Iconic are laid off since last March with four redundancies issued while workers that have retired or left have not been replaced.

Across the entire Iconic group, The Clare Echo understands that 10 to 12 redundancies were issued in the first round of cuts and a further eight in the second round. Up to 20 persons are believed to be on shortterm with upwards of 20 on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment. Last March, The Limerick Leader had an editorial staff of 16, they are now operating from a figure of seven, three of whom are working a four day week.

A Clare based journalist is among those affected. Speaking in the Seanad, Ennistymon native Senator Martin Conway (FG) brought the matter into national focus.

"During the pandemic, we have seen the important role that local media has played in keeping communities connected and giving them valuable, useful and correct information, and none more so than local newspapers throughout the country. It is appropriate that the Government would provide financial assistance to help local newspapers during this difficult time for them".

He continued, "That requires a responsibility of local newspaper to treat their journalists and other staff appropriately. It has come to my attention that Iconic Newspapers, which owns more than 25 local newspapers, has shredded its editorial workforce and reduced the hours and working conditions of many editorial staff, photographers, journalists and so on. If we are giving support to local newspapers, they have a responsibility to retain their staff".

Senator Conway called on Iconic Newspapers "to reverse its cuts immediately and engage properly and meaningfully with the National Union of Journalists" (NUJ).

Leader of the Seanad, Regina Doherty (FG) added, "It is a tragedy and a pity when we hear of staff being stood down because most of us know the people representing our local newspapers, whether photographers or journalists. They are being stood down because advertising in local newspapers has fallen to a trickle. The number of people purchasing newspapers has dropped significantly in the past 12 months".

A special meeting of Limerick City & County Council took place last week whereby Iconic were requested to recognise the NUJ and engage with workers representatives "to address concerns of their employees working in the Limerick Leader newspaper". Strong criticism of Iconic's actions have been voiced by the NUJ. They believed further acquisitions of media outlets by UK businessman Marcus Denmark should be subject to further scrutiny.

Senior personnel within Iconic Newspapers failed to acknowledge or respond to The Clare Echo's multiple requests for comment and further information.

‘Much more than a caretaker’ - glowing tributes to Flanagan PÁRAIC MCMAHON

NE of the most recognisable but understated figures associated with Clare GAA was laid to rest on

Wednesday.

Martin Flanagan spent 22 years as the caretaker of Cusack Park, his time with the keys coincided with Clare’s senior hurlers celebrating All-Ireland glory in 1995 and 1997, the breakthrough of the U21s in 2009 and Juniors in 1993 plus the glorious success of the Clare footballers in 1992.

His responsibilities also extended to Ballyline and Clareabbey but Martin was much more than a caretaker. The Ruan man perfected the art of the céad míle fáilte to the thousands of visitors that passed through Cusack Park during his two decades there, greeting everyone with a smile, one that exuded a warmth but also gave a hint of the devilment Martin was noted for.

Hurlers, footballers both past and present, former mentors and

supporters were among the many paying tribute to Martin. Without question, had his funeral taken place in normal times it would have been a who’s who of GAA greats.

line with Chairman Jack Chaplin and PRO Michael O’Connor paying their respects. Ex Clare boss John Maughan mentioned the warmth of a smile from Martin and the positive form he reverberated around Cusack Park.

Cyril Lyons featured in Clare’s All-Ireland glory of 1995. He frequently met Martin prior to and after training sessions during his thirteen year stint as a county senior player. “Given his personality and his nature people got to know him as Martin the person more so than Martin the caretaker”.

“It’s hard not to think of Martin Flanagan and not have a smile on your face. He was always in such good humour, there was a sense of roguishness and devilment about him, he loved the banter, he was able to give it and take it. He was so personable to everybody, people didn’t know him as Martin Flanagan, they knew him as Martin,” Cyril added.

During his time as Clare manager, Cyril observed how Martin always appeared to be busy around Cusack Park but never missed a trick. “When I finished playing and if I met Martin he would be able to tell me who was playing well in training, who was likely to play in the next match or who would get a run out even though he wasn’t a selector but nothing passed his eye”.

President of Ruan GAA club, Christy O’Connor was struck by the amount of phonecalls he received this week by people wanting to talk and share their memories of Martin.

His knowledge of the GAA was hard to match, “he was so good that he won a competition for The Sunday Press way back for an All-Ireland competition. He was real happy when Jimmy Smyth was honoured with a plaque in Ruan, he said it mildly to me that it was one good job done with Jimmy alive to see it, he was a quiet fella.

His big contribution was in Cusack Park for 22 years, he was most popular with the 95 and 97 teams, everyone that went in there he attended to them and he was great to disabled people, he always made sure they were looked after”.

Former county board official John O’Sullivan was friends with Martin for over forty years, the pair religiously shared a pint on Saturday nights in Moloneys. Their friendship grew from being in Cusack Park on matchday, Martin diffusing any problem with John assisting radio crews prior to their

broadcasts. “He had everything under control at Cusack Park, if you saw something you rang Martin and the problem was solved.

The people coming into Cusack Park be they players, mentors or spectators, they were always greeted with a pleasant smile from Martin which sometimes when he was under pressure it wasn’t easy to do but he always did”.

“Before backroom teams came into existence Martin was the backroom team,” O’Sullivan outlined. He detailed how Martin had the task of bringing players’ gear bags to Croke Park for big matches completing everything “smoothly and efficiently”.

Given the plaudits extended to Martin this week, Cyril underlined how it showcased the “esteem by which he was held by people, that is not common for everybody, in many ways it marks Martin out as a special person”.

Martin is survived by his wife Maura, son Pat, daughter-in-law Lourda, grandchildren Luke, Orlaith and Kate, sisters Mary and Brid, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

‘Financial support of big counties must be matched’

FINANCIAL support of big counties must be matched to ensure Clare is not at a disadvantage Clare hurling and camogie teams will find themselves at a disadvantage to other counties if they cannot match the financial support at their disposal, the newly appointed secretary of Club Clare has said.

During a 26 year career in public office, Tony Killeen served as a TD and councillor, his most high-profile role arising towards the end of his political career when he succeeded his Fianna Fáil colleague Willie O’Dea as Minister for Defence. Now the former primary school principal has taken over from Pat Keogh as secretary of Club Clare with Keogh replacing John Kerin as Chairman.

By getting involved with the supporters club, Killeen believed it was his way of making a “little contribution” to aiding the efforts of Clare’s hurling and camogie teams. “I look around me and see very substantial levels of support for other counties from various

fundraising events, it clearly has a positive impact on their preparation and ultimately on their performance”.

This year, Club Clare will also be aiding county camogie teams. “We’re all becoming a bit more aware how half of the population has been excluded to an extent heretofore, on that basis we were happy to include camogie”. He referenced the valuable contribution of female players to primary school and underage sides in the past. “We thought it was timely, sensible and good practice to include the game of camogie with our efforts to fundraise and support the county.

I’ve been to Croke Park, Birr and all kinds of places for camogie matches, the atmosphere is fantastic, you’re every bit as proud that the Clare girls won whatever it was as you would be if the Clare senior hurlers did it”.

What were once considered extras are now staples for most high-performing sides prompting the expense associated with inter-county outfits.

Tony outlined, “The truth is that we’re in a professional era in terms of the preparation input, we have wonderful athletes in this county and other counties who dedicate a huge amount of time and effort and bring us all a great deal of enjoyment and pride to be watching our own national games and seeing them perform to such a standard. The counties that don’t provide this additional level of finance find themselves at a huge disadvantage, any of the high performers are accessing finance”.

Corporate support has been ever-present since Club Clare’s establishment in 2017.

With the prospect of fans attending games in 2021 unlikely, the committee have invited the public to become members at a cost of €50 (individual) or €100 (family).

“All of that money would go toward the support for this particular season to both hurling and camogie teams from U14 to senior,” he explained. No specific target has been set for the desired amount of members but Killeen is hopeful the figure will hit 1500.

90 years since Smyth’s remarkable feat SEAMUS HAYES

arch 28th 1931 will always hold a special place in the history of Clare sport and particularly athletics.

On that date ninety years ago this weekend, the legendary Tim Smythe beat all entries at Baldoyle in a 9 mile cross country race.

Born in Garraun near Feakle on April 12th in 1905, the death of his mother when he was just 3 and of his father when he was only 12 resulted in Tim moving to Clonloum in O’Callaghans Mills where he was reared by his aunt, Mrs Lenihan.

From an early age, Tim was prominent in athletics and this despite suffering

serious leg injuries when he was 17 years of age.Starting out in 1925 he was second in both the half and one mile races at Feakle sports. He recorded his first win at a race in Quin and soon realised that the longer distances suited him better.

In 1928 he helped form at athletic club in O’Callaghans Mills under the governing body of the NACA and in February of 1929 the club entered the National junior championships at Limerick Junction racecourse. The team finished in eighth place while Smythe won the silver medal in the individual section.

In the senior championship a month later Tim finished in third place and this qualified him for a place on the Irish team for the World championships in Paris. He was Ireland’s second man home in that event but was

unplaced.

The Irish senior championship in 1930 was held in the Phoenix Park where Tim was crowned the Irish champion. He was on the

Irish team for the international championships held at Lemington Spa where he finished down the field.

He helped the O’C. Mills team to win the county

championship in 1931 when the race was held in Sixmilebridge.

The Irish championship was held in Baldoyle and here Smythe retained the title he had won twelve months earlier and he led the Mills team to second place in the team race.

He was one of four Clare athletes selected to represent Ireland in an international event at Baldoyle on March 28. Smythe won the event, beating runners from England, Scotland, Wales, France and Belgium. Starting the last lap he opened a 150 yard advantage and went on to win the race by 19 seconds.

In the Spring of 2001 a memorial plaque was erected in O’Callaghans Mills village to honour the achievements of Tim Smythe. “Because of the Covid 19 lockdown, we are unable to hold a celebration

ACK-TO-BACK Women’s National League champion Chloe Moloney is hoping to also nudge Galway WFC into title contention after re-signing for the club ahead of the new season lift-off this Saturday.

Having cut her top flight teeth with ‘The Galway Girls’ in 2015 & 16, the Quilty native’s switch to Peamount Utd in January 2017 coincided with the Dublin club establishing themselves as the dominant force in the country, thanks to successive National League titles in 2019 and ’20 along with completing a historic domestic double with the FAI Women’s Cup in December.

The dual soccer and ladies football star’s sporting relocation back west is as much to do with practicality as embracing a new challenge though, having moved back home after graduating from IT Carlow with a degree in Sports Coaching and Business Management in 2020.

“Galway are a great club and

with what’s going on in the world right now with COVID and everything, just even travel-wise it was a better option for me. I obviously played with them before I went to Peamount as well so I’d still know a good few of the girls there. As well as that, Dave Bell, who has come in as coach this year, was actually my coach when I played with the Ireland Under 17’s so I’d know him very well too which is a bonus”.

Having finished mid-table for the past three seasons, Billy Clery’s side are eager to break into the top three according to Moloney who feels that their new signings on and off the field allied to an enviable home record could be crucial ingredients to Galway’s potential progression this term. “When I was with Peamount, the one game each year that they dreaded was Galway away. Eamonn Deacy Park is always a tough place to go to try and get a result and I can guarantee you that even the likes of Shelbourne or Wexford don’t like going there either.

“Galway have always been a difficult team to play against and now with the likes of Rachel Kearns (Mayo LGFA player) coming in along with Dave [Bell] coaching, it’s a huge boost for us. So hopefully

we can push up the table and start competing for honours because obviously if you don’t set out to win it and don’t believe you can, you’re realistically not going to win it.”

Galway’s first test of a 24 match league campaign is at home against Cork City on Saturday, with the prospect of an eight month season fully appreciated. “Every time we go out to play even a pre-season match, our manager stresses the need to recognise how lucky we are because there are a lot of people that aren’t able to play sport.”

Cotter departs Ipswich

“I plan on playing with Clare too unless it gets really, really tough so hopefully it all works out on both fronts and nothing clashes too much. It should be okay because with the way the football is going at the minute, it will probably just be championship but we’ll just have to wait and see what develops. For the moment, I’m just extremely grateful to be playing competitive games at all, starting on Saturday against Cork. It will be tough but I’m really looking forward to getting going”.

BARRY Cotter’s departure from Ipswich Town has been confirmed by the club.

On Monday evening, Ipswich Town confirmed that the Ennis man would not be offered a new contract at the end of the season.

“The Club thanks Barry for his efforts while at Portman Road, and wishes him the very best of luck for the future,” a spokesperson for The Tractor Boys confirmed.

His contract was due to expire this summer, but the two parties have reached a mutual agreement for him to leave early. Barry is now looking for a new club.

Cotter signed for the English club in January 2018 from Limerick FC and made four appearances for Ipswich’s first team, none of which occurred this season.

Reflecting on his time with Ipswich, Barry maintained it was a “great club” with “quality people inside there”. He paid tribute to all individuals involved with the club’s academy for their guidance on and off the pitch.

Newmarket’s Cullinan signs pro contract

by PÁRAIC McMAHON Newmarket-on-Fergus’ Harvey Cullinan has signed his first professional contract with Sheffield United.

In April 2019, Cullinan first joined Sheffield Utd forming part of their professional development squad, it followed a number of trials with English clubs off the back of his exploits at club and county level.

He has now put pen to paper on his first professional contract with The Blades having shown himself to be a key member of their U18 side this season. The displays of the midfielder have resulted in him lining out at U23 level for the club.

Announcement of his contract signing comes days after his former club Newmarket Celtic posted an old picture online ahead of Shane Cusack’s move to Colchester Utd which also featured Harvey who was then part of the club’s youngest side.

Cian Nolan of the Smith O’Briens club in Killaloe has been recruited onto the county senior panel for the first time in his career. The Cullinan link to Newmarket Celtic has existed for some time with Harvey’s uncle Darren a former captain of the club’s A team while his uncle Donal is a former treasurer of the club.

“All at Newmarket Celtic are immensely proud and would once again like to congratulate Harvey, his family and all the coaches who have helped in his development,” a spokesperson for the club said on Thursday.

Even while appearing for the Newmarket-on-Fergus hurlers, Harvey’s kicking and scoring ability was clear to see. The concluding race on Friday went to the Niall Arthur and Bernard Farrell of Inagh owned Wishful Ben who made all to defeat Lakeside Milly by a length and a half in 29.21. Breaking smartly the winner moved to the centre on the run towards the opening bend where he led by two lengths from Lakeside Milly. Racing down the back the son of Ballymac Vic and Wishful Flyer extended his advantage to over three lengths to Lakeside Milly and the result was never in doubt.

In the penultimate race at Shelbourne Park on Saturday last, Buttsys Blackie continued the tremendous run of form of Gerry Holian and his owners the Buttsys Buckos Syndicate of Shannon. In a race that turned into a three-dog battle with Buttsys Blackie forced to get the better of Magical Cormie and Deadly Samuri. All three had their chance in this contest but Buttsys Blackie made a decisive move into the third turn. The son of Pinpoint Maxi and Killeacle Tammy flashed from traps and led the field early but both Deadly Samuri and Magical Cormie were soon challenging. The latter actually led the trio into back but Buttsys Blackie drove between his rivals at the third turn to assert again. From there he raced into two length lead and he maintained that advantage to the line to stop the clock in 28.87.
