LANS for an €8m maritime training centre in Kilrush could hit a stumbling block in the form of pyrite, it is

feared. Funding has been applied for

by Clare County Council under the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Rural Regeneration and Development Fund to create a maritime centre in Kilrush which is earmarked to create 28 jobs and train 1,200 people each year. A key aspect of the proposal is the purchase, renovation and use of a currently derelict building, Creek

Lodge at Kilrush Marina. However, as previously reported by The Clare Echo, Creek Lodge is one of the more prominent public buildings that has showed signs of the presence of pyrite and defective concrete blocks which would greatly impact on its future use.
