HE fight to keep Shannon Heritage sites open has intensified with the planned closing date of August 31st edging closer. Speaking at a Dáil sitting yesterday, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin (FF) hinted that Shannon Heritage would benefit from the July Stimulus Package. Deputy Michael McNamara (IND) claimed “Shannon Group appear not to want Shannon Heritage”. Management have said up to €4m is required to keep the sites open following a sharp decline in

international visitors and a poor uptake in domestic tourists thus far. They plan to keep their Dublin attractions including Malahide Castle while Knappogue Castle and Craggaunowen remain shut with Bunratty Castle & Folk Park and King John’s Castle to close next month. West of Ireland Tourism Matters is the slogan of a newly created action group comprised of local business operators that have stated “closing Bunratty is not an option”.
