Seaside businesses feel heat of busiest summer in memory

A

PERFECT storm of forced staycationers and soaring summer temperatures have led to the busiest summer in living memory at Clare coastal destinations.

Owner of Spar Lahinch, Robert Kennedy estimated that there were 5,000 people in the village on Saturday and again on Sunday.

“It is like a tidal wave and no one

can prepare you for it. It is so busy with the sun, COVID is forcing staycations. We would normally be very busy but with staycations but this is colossal. We’re not complaining. It is very hard work but it is very good to have work to get through”.

Robert has been running the store for twenty one years, the amount of visitors over the weekend cannot be surpassed. “I can honestly say I’m born and bred in Lahinch and I’ve never seen the volumes”.

Meanwhile, concerns over traffic management have been raised across the county as cars clamber to the tourist hotspots. In

one instance, emergency services “struggled to get through” to the scene of an incident in Kilkee due to “cars parked illegally and trailers abandoned”.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) said it was very concerning that a woman who was in need of “serious medical attention” was left waiting for care due to “poor traffic management” hindering the access for emergency services.

LANNING permission for a controversial windfarm in Cahermurphy has been rejected by Clare County Council.

Mid Clare Renewable Energy (MCRE) Windfarm Ltd lodged the plans in September for the 10 wind turbines with Clare County Council on Friday opting against giving the development the green light.

Over 100 submissions were received by the local authority from the public, community groups and elected representatives. Locals cited the potential of depopulation and the consequences of the erection of further wind turbines to the area in their submissions. The windfarm was proposed to be built in the townlands of Cahermurphy, Knocknahila More South, Carrownagry South, Caheraghacullin and Drummin, together with the development of an underground grid connection cable to the National Grid in the townlands of Cahermurphy, Drummin, Doolough, Glenmore, and Booltiagh.

72 jobs would have been created as a result of the proposed project, the environmental impact statement lodged by the applicants stated and also detailed plans for a community benefit fund of €5.6m.

In a chief executive order signed last week, acting senior planner with the Council, Helen Quinn outlined that the proposed turbine height structures of 170m “would constitute strident and visually prominent features on the landscape”.

O CLARE remains under a yellow warm weather warning until Friday as heatwave conditions descend on the Banner

County.

Temperatures hit 31 degrees in parts of Clare on Wednesday in what was one of the hottest days of the year.

The yellow weather alert remains in place until Friday at least.

With the sublime sunshine has come huge volumes of crowds to popular coastal locations in Clare, subsequently this has caused traffic management issues.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) outlined that emergency services “struggled to get through” to the scene of an incident in Kilkee due to “cars parked illegally and trailers abandoned”.

Phenomenal crowds are flocking to North and West Clare, Cllr Shane Talty (FF) stated. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like it in Lahinch”.

To allow the county cope with the demand associated with extra visitors, increased resources are needed, Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) outlined. “This is what we want, this is what we market for, this is what the beauty of our area is for, we’ve never experienced

this volume before but this is what our economy needs. This is what we want for the future, if our area is going to be the destination for the country then there is a serious question.

Other parts of Clare and country has to be looked at. If Co Clare is to be used as a banner to attract people into Ireland, resources and funding are needed for the work to be put in on the ground. We have to be resourced, we have to be funded”.

CLARE County Council are to undertake a remedial works to a derelict building in Tulla if the owner does not carry out works as instructed by the local authority.

An update was sought by Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) at the July meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District as he cited Tulla’s ongoing issues with dereliction and vacant property.

Senior executive engineer, Niamh Madden said there had been constant engagement on the particular building in Tulla which was causing concern.

She confirmed that the owner had been given a final opportunity to have works completed within a matter of days. “If no works are undertaken in next week or so, fire services will organise a contractor to carry out the works,” Madden stated on Wednesday last.

She outlined, “the street is cordoned off and has been cordoned off since it was notified as a health and safety issue, the Council has moved as fast as possible to give the owner a chance”.

Heavy goods vehicles are getting stuck due to the temporary structures put in place around the building, Cllr Hayes flagged.

“We’re portrayed as Council for

inactivity, the public will say the Council are doing nothing.

This could take another month before we get a contractor in to do the works, the law is the law.

We really need to tackle this issue, it could go on for another twelve months, the process isn’t the one suitable going forward for us all”.

Progress had been made, Cathaoirleach of the Killaloe MD, Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) insisted. “We all want to see action in that part of Tulla, it is a disgrace to have it derelict in the heart of Tulla”. Cllr Pat Burke (FG) told the meeting that one man from Tulla accused the Council of letting the centre of the town die while building houses on the periphery, “I lay the blame at the owners who are difficult to get in contact with”.

Director of Service, Anne Haugh detailed that schemes existed for owners of vacant property to utilise. Acting senior executive officer, Morgan Lahiffe advised the meeting he met with owners of vacant property in Tulla in recent weeks, “they told us of their plans to upgrade and utilise some of the repair and lease schemes available. There is bits happening in the background”.

Following discussions among active divers in the locality, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) brought up the matter with engineers in the West Clare Municipal Distirct and received confirmation that the boards

will be put back up in the very near future. “I’m delighted to say the boards will be put back up very shortly, we are just waiting on some Covid signage and we will be ready to go,” Cllr Murphy stated.

Locals and visitors have welcomed the announcement and described it is “a sure sign that summer is really here”.

Excitement in Shannon as travel takes off again

New route added to Shannon

by PÁRAIC McMAHON A NEW service from Shannon Airport to Gran Canaria is to take off in August. On Monday, it was announced that Ryanair were to commence a new service from Shannon Airport on August 7th to Gran Canaria (Las Palmas). It is the third new service announcement for Shannon by Ryanair and will run until the end of October.

CEO of Shannon Group, Mary Considine welcomed the “great news”. She stated, “As we rebuild from the devastation of the pandemic this is a positive announcement for the region. Ryanair is a valued airline partner of Shannon”.

She added, “We have been working closely with Ryanair as we look to an anticipated recovery in demand on foot of the rollout of the EU Digital Covid Certificates and the acceleration of the vaccination programme across Europe. These new services are part of Ryanair’s commitment to reopen its Shannon base which is very welcome.

Ryanair now has a total of 17 routes at Shannon Airport for 2021, these include the new routes to Gran Canaria, Corfu and Turin plus Barcelona-Reus, Stansted, Gatwick, Kaunas, Krakow, Wroclaw, Warsaw, Manchester, Faro, Lanzarote, Malaga, Palma, Tenerife and Alicante.

SENSE of excitement filled the air at Shannon Airport on Monday with passengers taking to skies as the first day of the European Digital COVID Certificates took effect.

There were reunions as inbound flights arrived but also a palpable degree of anticipation as others got set to depart on the earliest flight out of the airport today, the 7:10am flight to Gatwick.

Among those boarding were Jack and Rita Fitzgibbon from Limerick who were travelling out to the UK hoping to be in time ahead of the birth of their first great-grandchild. “We are travelling because we hope to celebrate the birth of our great grandchild.

SAVE our Shannon (SOS) have renewed calls for Government intervention to safeguard Shannon Airport’s future ahead of a planned rally in Ennis next weekend.

A Mid-West based group, SOS will gather at the Daniel O’Connell Monument which is currently under construction on Saturday July 24th at midday to highlight their request for State intervention.

Changes to the country’s aviation policy and the introduction of measures to incentivise passengers and airlines to use Shannon Airport have been some of the requests put forward by the group.

Chairman of the group, Denis Vaughan repeated his call for Government action.

"The post Covid Government need to incentivise airlines and passengers to use Shannon Airport.

"The Government should be looking at doing what it can to force Aer Lingus back to Shannon. After all, Ireland subsidises the airline."

"Shannon deserves a fairer share of air passengers business. Dublin Airport increased their passenger numbers in 2019 by 13.8 million whilst all the other Irish airports increased only by 2.7 million.

"We demand justice, Dublin dominates, there is a country outside of Dublin”.

NEWLY established Patient Advocacy Service is offering support to people in the Clare area who want to make a complaint about the care they have received in a public hospital.

Free, independent and confidential information and support is to be provided by the Patient Advocacy Service to people making a formal complaint about their care in a Health Service Executive (HSE) funded public acute hospital.

People in the Clare area looking for support can contact the Patient Advocacy Service confidential helpline on 0818 293003 to speak to a trained advocate who will help them to get information on the HSE’s complaints investigation process, called ‘Your Service, Your Say’. The professionally trained independent advocate will support and empower the person making the complaint, with the aim of highlighting their views and concerns.

An advocate will explain to the person how to write a formal complaint and what to include in it. They will also help the person prepare for meetings with the HSE about their complaint, and they will help the person explore their options following a response from the HSE to their complaint.

Service Manager for the Patient Advocacy Service, Claire Lehane, said: “Until now, people in Clare and across Ireland who experienced difficulties in the Irish health service often felt there was nowhere for them to turn. The newly established Patient Advocacy Service offers patients the guidance and information they need to make a complaint when they are unhappy with the care they receive. It is free, independent and run by our professionally trained patient advocates who will use their com-

passion and knowledge to guide people through the HSE complaints process”.

For people in the Clare area looking for advocacy support to make a formal complaint, you can contact the Patient Advocacy Service helpline on 0818 293003. The helpline is open Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm, including lunchtimes.

The Patient Advocacy Service was comissioned by the National Patient Safety Office in the Department of Health in October 2018 to provide information and advocacy support to people wishing to make a complaint through the HSE’s ‘Your Service, Your Say’ complaints process. The development of a patient advocacy service is an action in the Programme for a Partnership Government 2016. It was also a recommendation in the Health Information and Quality Authority’s (HIQA) 2015 report on the Investigation into Maternity Care in Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise and the Ombudsman’s 2015 report ‘Learning to get Better’.

This HIQA report was developed in response to investigations into Portlaoise maternity services and recognised the need for patient experiences to be recorded, listened to and learned from. The report acknowledged the need for such learning to be shared between hospitals, within hospital groups, and nationally through the wider health system. It recommended the establishment of an independent Patient Advocacy Service to support this learning.

Following a tender process, the National Advocacy Service for People with Disabilities (NAS) was awarded the Department of Health tender to develop the new Patient Advocacy Service. NAS began development of the new service in January 2019, the service went live on 31 October 2019, and it was officially launched by then Minister for Health, Simon Harris (FG) on 13 November 2019 at the National Patient Safety Conference in Dublin Castle.

‘There must be no delays’

by PÁRAIC McMAHON ENSURING no delays in facilitating the planning application for a €1.2bn data centre campus in Ennis is essential, a Clare TD has said.

A vertical farm and six data halls designed on a flexible and modular basis, covering 145 acres/1.3 million sq ft are among the plans for the data centre which will be located on the Tulla Rd in Ennis.

Clare TD, Joe Carey (FG) (inset) outlined, “While a data centre in itself is extremely positive, it’s the potential spin off business that can be created that could be the real game changer for Ennis and Clare”.

“It’s essential that there is no delay in facilitating this planning application.

We are very much aware of the lengthy planning difficulties which ultimately led to the demise of the €850m Apple Data Centre in Athenry,” he said.

Deputy Carey added, “Data centres are central to the digital economy.

“They contribute to job creation and generate significant added economic benefit by providing a range of services to other firms that undertake production, R&D, marketing, sales, service and support activities in locations with no physical/ geographic connection to the data centre”.

Facebook’s data centre in Lulea, Sweden was visited prior to work commencing on the plans for the Ennis equivalent.

Retired county councillor, Tom McNamara (FF) was involved in the trip to Lulea. “I’m delighted Clare County Council have led from the beginning. It will be the same as having a goldmine,” he stated of the proposed data centre.

Construction is to be phased over six years commencing late in 2022. Data centre specialists Colin Hyde of ARC:MC, and Robert Thorogood of HDRInc have designed the plans. It has access to 200 mega-watts of power from both the network grid and gas generation on site.

The Ennis Eirgrid Network Sub Station adjacent to the new Art Data Centre Campus will provide a very high level of power supply-side diversity with grid power being supplemented by a gas generator-based energy centre to generate additional power.

‘Time to transcend negative stereotypes’ of young mums CIAN O’BROIN cian@clareecho.ie

YOUNG mother from Clare has called for more comprehensive education around relationships and sexuality, referencing her own teenage pregnancy as an example of ‘living outside the norm’.

Doora native Rachael O’Connor (23) recently featured in Leah Moore’s documentary ‘Deliver’, which looked at the perception of being a young mother in Ireland today. Premiered at the Lasta at Glór festival in late June, Rachel, who discovered that she was pregnant at 17 during her Leaving Certificate year found the festival a vital talking point and “an opportunity to celebrate my experience of motherhood”.

Her daughter Ella, now six, was born in July that year, just one month after sitting her Leaving Certificate.

“It was definitely a really dark, lonely and stressful period of time. Growing up in a Catholic country, I think

the majority of people hear about young mothers or teenage mothers and there’s often a shameful stigma attached to them. Finding out I was pregnant so young, I definitely felt the weight of that shame and guilt, and I didn’t want to bring that on my family, I felt like I was a problem for them at the time,” the Rice College past pupil admitted.

There are many benefits to being a young mother, Rachael believed.

Whilst in the hospital at the time, a midwife imparted that “it doesn’t matter if you are 17, 27, 37 or 47, you’re going to be scared having your first baby.” In spite of this, nothing could have prepared her for the incredible experience of motherhood. Being a young mother, she feels that she has a closeness with her daughter that older parents may not have. Having young grandparents that Ella can spend quality time with is another benefit, Rachel added.

Becoming a young mother infused a drive in Rachel to continue through her education and receive a BA degree from Mary Immaculate College. She is currently enrolled

in a Master of Education in NUI Galway. “Ireland definitely has a more mature generation of first-time mothers, but I think that’s reflective of society and what women in their twenties and early thirties are told that ‘you can’t have the career and the family’ which is ridiculous in my eyes. You absolutely can have both, it’s just about finding the right balance that works for you”.

Having a network of support was essential for Rachel after giving birth to Ella. For other young and expecting mothers, she urges to reach out for help, empathising with the feeling of being a burden to everyone around, “but everyone needs someone to turn to for support, no matter how great or small that is.”

Her hope is that the documentary will open a talking point and transcend the negative stereotype pushed onto young mothers. Her belief is that increased education has “the power to break down this stigma attached to young mothers and create a greater acceptance in society for individuals who live outside the norm”.

Plans for €25m Ennis community hospital to be lodged this year

WOMAN who rented a beach-friendly wheelchair at Kilkee for her son this weekend has stressed the need for increased information as well as changing facilities at the seaside town.

Last year, Clare County Council launched an initiative which saw the introduction of beach friendly wheelchairs at Lahinch and Kilkee for those experiencing mobility issues in July and August.

One wheelchair was made available free of charge in each of the Clare coastal towns, with pickup points listed as Leisure World in Lahinch and Waterworld in Kilkee.

When Amanda Coughlan from Santry pursued this line of enquiry for her son TJ (16) with Spina Bifida at the start of the summer, her emails to both facilities were met with resounding silence.

A member of several private groups, Amanda flagged that eight other families were making similar enquiries but to no avail.

Shortly after, Amanda discov-

ered that the wheelchairs had been returned to Clare County Council due to renovations in both locations.

Beach Ambassador Marcella O’ Callaghan is now taking the wheelchair in Kilkee, whilst Ben Bennett of Ben’s Surf Clinic will be taking the wheelchair in Lahinch.

“I have asked Clare County Council to make the information more publicly accessible,” the paediatric advocate stated.

PLANNING is to be lodged for a €25m community hospital in Ennis later this year.

The site is to be located on grounds adjacent to St Flannan’s College in Ennis.

In early 2016, a Capital Programme for Older Persons Residential Centres was developed and agreed with the Department of Health in response to the introduction of HIQA’s, National Residential Care Standards for Older People.

5.09 acres of land have been secured by the HSE at Turnpike junction for the new 100 bed community nursing unit, Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly (FF) stated.

The project is included for funding in the HSE Capital Programme for 20021 with a design team procured, they have already began an outline design of the project.

He added, “The contract for the purchase of the lands, which is subject to obtaining planning permission, will see a new 100-bed HIQA compli-

ant Community Nursing Unit for long stay and short stay residents developed on this green field site within walking distance of all community services and the town centre.

The unit will include 88-single and 4-twin rooms, and 4-palliative care facilities”.

A timeline for delivery was not outlined by the Minister.

“It is important to recognise that the delivery of capital projects is a dynamic process and is subject to the successful completion of the various approval stages, in line with the Public Spending Code, which can impact on the timeline for delivery”.

Clare TD, Joe Carey (FG) confirmed the application will be made later this year.

“It is important to have got clarity with regards to when planning will be lodged.

The fact that funding has been allocated is important but I am delighted to hear that the design team have been appointed and are working on this important project”.

‘Menopause myths and taboos need to be dispelled’

by PÁRAIC McMAHON FEMALE councillors in Clare have spoken of the need to remove taboos on conversations about menopause.

Citing a “huge unmet need”, a joint motion from Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) (inset), Cllr Ann Norton (IND), Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) and Cllr Susan Crawford (GP) issued a plea to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly (FF) and the Department of Health to bring in improvements surrounding menopausal care in Ireland.

They asked that more funding be provided in hospitals and general care, that a campaign be initiated to inform the public of the multiple and diverse symptoms attributable to menopause, that all necessary resources be in place to allow Irish Gps upskill in this area, they sought the introduction of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) “body identicals” in drugs schemes and for more communication with health insurance companies to ensure that menopausal care coverage is provided.

This motion was sparked following a week-long series on Joe Duffy’s Liveline in May where women of the country shared their stories on menopause including many of whom were put on anti-depressants when they should have been on HRT and others flagging how HRT was wrongly characterised with causing cancer.

Dr. Deirdre Lundy, specialist in Women’s Health highlighted that Ireland has no faculty of sexual and reproductive health, “we either have a gynae-

cology surgeon or a GP”.

In the UK, a faculty of sexual and reproductive health manages menopause, "I use their guidelines because we don’t have any Irish equivalent. Were I in the UK, I’d be a consultant in sexual and reproductive health, but we don’t have that, so I’m just a doctor,” Dr Lundy stated.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the County Council, Cllr Norton detailed that menopause was something every woman had to go through.

“I hope it opens up this conversation, we shouldn’t be ashamed to talk about going through the menopause at whatever stage of our lives, men need to understand that we are the ones that bear the children and go through the menopause”.

Health professionals and policy makers must be aware that a high amount of women were misdiagnosed when they shouldn’t have been, Cllr McGettigan commented.

Exercise and diet were important aspects of pre-menopausal care, Cllr Crawford said.

Of the 24 male county councillors, Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) was the only one to speak on the motion.

He remarked that it was surprising and alarming to hear “the misdiagnoses of the symptoms and the help available didn’t seem to be redirected to them”.

“People like us in elected positions need to dispel myths and taboos.

If I’m learning that in 2021 that our women in Ireland are not getting the same level of care than those across the sea then I’m going to act,” Colleran Molloy concluded.

IARY constraints” are preventing the Taoiseach from meeting representatives of Clare County Council to discuss Aer Lingus’ decision to permanently close its cabin crew base at Shannon Airport.

A special meeting held by the local authority in June called for the Taoiseach Micheál Martin (FF) (inset), Tanáiste Leo Varadkar (FG) and Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan (GP) to meet with senior officials and some elected representatives from the Council in the aftermath of the setback for Shannon Airport.

Almost a month passed before correspondence from the local authority to the office of the Taoiseach was acknowledged. “The Taoiseach has asked me to say that, due to diary

constraints, he is not in a position to accede your request,” an officer in the Cork man’s Department outlined.

Clare County Council were thanked by the Minister for Transport’s office with a more detailed response from Eamon Ryan promised. Correspondence to the office of the Tanáiste was acknowledged.

Of Clare’s seven Oireachtas members, only Cathal Crowe TD (FF) acknowledged the local authority’s request to hold a discussion on Shannon Airport’s future. “I want to assure you all that I am working constantly, on a cross-party basis, to pressure Aer Lingus to reverse their decision. In particular, I have asked the Taoiseach and colleagues in government to make any further financial supports that Aer Lingus seek from the state be conditional on retaining its staff, committing to its bases and resuming its routes.

The situation remains fluid but I will continue to do everything possible to bring about a satisfactory outcome for all concerned,” the Meelick native stated in correspondence to Council officials.

Council clash over key projects

by PÁRAIC McMAHON A SHANNON councillor has clashed with senior officials in Clare County Council on the pace at which two key projects for the town are moving at.

In December 2018, a €27m fund was created to upgrade flood defences at Shannon town, the airport and the industrial zone, all of which lie along the Shannon Estuary. Embankments bordering the three vital pieces of infrastructure are not constructed to modern engineering standards and could not protect against a one in 200 year tidal flood event. Parts of the Airport and Shannon Golf Club were flooded in 2009 and 2014.

Under the N19 Shannon Airport Access Road Improvement Scheme, high-quality road improvements are to be provided on the N19 National Primary Road between Drumgeely Roundabout and Knockbeagh Point Roundabout on approach to Shannon International Airport. Clare County Council appointed

Fehily Timoney & Company and Clandillon Civil Consulting Joint Venture (FTC JV) in October 2019 as the technical consultants to progress the scheme through phases 1 to 4 of the TII Project Management Guidelines.

Speaking at the July meeting of Clare County Council, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) remarked that both projects “seem to be moving at a very very slow pace”. He added that he would “failing in my role” as an elected representative if he failed to highlight the matter.

Seán Lenihan of the Council’s project management office admitted he was surprised by the comments. “I think there is great progress being made on both schemes,” he said and added that capital projects “by their nature are very slow”. He detailed that “a lot of work on the ground” is ongoing such as tender contractors and contractors and offered to attend a meeting of the Shannon

Municipal District to discuss the matter further.

“Senior officials are getting upset with me making my case, my mandate makes me a messenger for the people, I do that, that is my job and I make no apology for that, when schemes are complete I will have no problem jumping up and down with you,” Flynn responded.

Chief Executive of the Council, Pat Dowling outlined, “four years ago these didn’t exist as projects, we have brought them to where they are today”. He referred to the work undertaken by the local authority to pull different bodies together to secure funding, “it is on a trajectory, they will be built”.

Flynn responded, “It seems nothing was done before Pat came”.

“I didn’t say that members,” Dowling told the virtual meeting and the Shannon representative replied, “you inferred”. The Chief Executive concluded, “You can interpret it anyway you want. There was not a plan before that, they are being dealt with now”.

LARE businessman Diarmuid McMahon has completed a 10.9km swim across Galway Bay to raise vital funding for Cancer Care West.

The 15th annual Frances Thornton swim was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, but the Sherry Fitzgerald Managing Director decided to take to open water last weekend, starting in Aughinish Bay and finishing up four and a half hours later at Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill.

A member of the Atlantic Master’s Swimming Club, the chartered accountant has been enjoying the “comradery felt through diverse backgrounds” during open water swimming sessions for the last five years.

Going into the challenge, Diarmuid was swimming 15km per week, with lockdown providing an “opportunity to do more.”

by PÁRAIC McMAHON ALDI have announced plans to open a second store in Ennis.

On Friday, the discount supermarket chain submitted a planning application to Clare County Council for a 1,000sqm store at Westpoint Retail Park, on the Kilrush Road in Ennis.

If the project is given the green light, the store will open in late 2023. Aldi have said the new store would create 30 permanent jobs and up to 50 in the construction phase. It is to be powered by 100 per cent green electricity with 96 dedicated customer car parking spaces included in the plans plus four electric vehicle charging points.

The target of €1,250 for what he highlighted as “an excellent charity” has now been reached, with donations still being received until September 1, 2021.

“All funds raised here will go directly to this great cause. We had originally hoped for only €1,000.

“The Thornton family would be big in the swimming community. They started the Galway Bay swim many years ago. Frances Thornton died from cancer after the first swim in 2006. The family have done so much for Cancer Care West. I hope people can help by donating whatever they can.”

Hotel Doolin continues to earn plaudits for environmental action CIAN O’BROIN

RELAND’S first certified carbon neutral hotel recently picked up a number of environmental awards for waste prevention and sustainable on-site practices.

Founded in 2008, Hotel Doolin now boasts 17 rooms and nine holiday homes. Forming part of the Burren Ecotourism Network, the establishment’s green journey began eight years ago in an effort to “protect the beautiful environment where we are located” stated human resources, purchasing and Green manager Áine Martin, who oversees a staff of 110 in one of North Clare’s largest employers.

The catalyst came in the form of positive community integration, where initiatives were partnered with clearly set corporate social responsibility work such as fundraisers and working with local groups.

The establishment birthed a Green Team, subdivided into waste, water and energy teams.

The groups convene frequently to discuss ideas, projects and targets. This was what led to winning the Green Award for Best Sustainable Team in Ireland as well as winning the Best Medium Sized Organisation Award for three years running, in recognition of the value of sustainable work completed by the Hotel.

On top of this, Hotel Doolin clinched first place at Repak’s 2019 Pakman National Environmental Awards, winning the Waste Prevention Business Award. Last year, Áine admitted that the focus was on obtaining “a carbon neutral certificate” for the hotel and will this year, be re-entering the seventh annual Pakman Awards.

“Since then, we have been recognised for our waste prevention.

We have decided to paint the programmes for the Doolin Folk Festival in September on the walls of the hotel, saving thousands of printed pieces of paper. We also offer a 30-cent discount on tea and coffee when someone brings a reusable cup and we are big on upcycling.

“The new bar which we built in

2018 to replace the marquee has lampshades made from old fishermen’s eel baskets in County Sligo.

The bar counter is also refurbished from old whiskey bars,” she told The Clare Echo.

The pioneers in ‘green hospitality’ also made the transition to 100 per cent green electricity in 2019.

Heating systems were changed to air to water, equipment was analysed for waste and the carbon footprint was reduced from 404 tonnes in 2018 to 114 in 2021.

This current footprint, Áine informed, is “offset by tree planting and the growing of on-site Glas

With eco-conscious guests central to the philosophy and running of the hotel, Aine added that for each wedding, 10 native trees are planted between Lahinch and Ennistymon.

“So far we have planted 2,050 trees. These include alder, willow, rowan, whitethorn and blackthorns. Each tree offsets one tonne of carbon in its lifetime. Feedback has been immensely positive, and our guests often offer us great ideas of their own.”

Seventy per cent of the food produce used in the restaurant is purchased within a 30-mile radius of the hotel.

Aine enthused that they are always looking to do more, and that the current drive is to “implement both wind and solar energy systems.”

This is currently in the research stage, split amongst the various inhouse teams. An energy audit is also being looked into and will offer a critical insight into waste and room for improvement.

The final project on the horizon for now is the setting up of a full composter, meaning that biofertilizer can be used by the likes of local suppliers to the hotel such as Moy Hill Community Farm.

ELL Hensey’s short film ‘Try n’ Touch’ has been chosen as the winning Clare entry in the Engine Shorts film competition. €12,500 in funding has now been awarded to Barefield’s Nell to allow her to make her short film with producer Gemma O’Shaughnessy. The commissioned teams will also receive further industry training as they prepare for production.

Filming will then begin from next month with the completed films delivered in the autumn ready for distri-

bution to film festivals internationally.

The Engine Shorts initiative is run by Innovate Limerick through Film in Limerick, and is a partnership between the Local Authorities in Limerick, Clare and Tipperary, and Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. The new scheme aims to inspire and support up-and-coming writers, directors and producers to create inspiring, engaging world-class short films that resonate with a wide international audience.

Five applications from Clare were shortlisted. Each team went through a development process with training and support from Film in Limerick. Following the development stage, the 15

shortlisted teams pitched to an industry panel of Oscar nominee Ruth Negga, Juliette Bonass and Clare Dunne.

Ennis will be the backdrop for Nell and Gemma’s short film which tells the story of a shy rugby star, Emer, who has caught feelings for a classmate and it explores whether she has the courage to act on them.

Gemma outlined that the search to find actors to star in the short film is now underway. “We are looking forward to finding fresh new talent for our lead role in 'Try and Touch’ and delighted to be able to make Nell’s film in Clare”.

by CIAN O’BROIN A CLARE contestant pushing the benefits of gardening for mental and physical wellbeing will feature in a brand new RTÉ show this week.

Ireland’s Garden Heroes, which will premiere on RTÉ One on Thursday at 8pm, has captured the imagination of ordinary people across the island and how this translates into what for many people like Clare contestant, Carl Wright (inset), can be defined as a “life’s work.”

Moving from Devon in the United Kingdom to Caher Valley behind Fanore in 1996, Carl accidentally fell in love with the process of gardening, when, after purchasing a derelict traditional Irish cottage overgrown with blackthorn, hawthorn and hazel, he decided it was “time to clean up outside”.

With a vested interest in restoring old houses and buildings, Carl quickly realised that he was afforded a unique opportunity to combine his background in ecology with his building skills and a newfound love for plants.

“I found that I was interested in garden design and buildings. The garden quickly grew bigger and bigger. It’s now almost two acres. It’s a woodland garden with a series of separate interconnected rooms. It has everything in it from a pond to a river, woodland garden, wildflower meadows and lots of rocks. It’s very unusual,” the Caher Bridge Garden Centre owner stated.

For years Carl has been collecting different species of plants traditionally grown in Ireland, either historically or recently.

Drawing on the natural beauty of the Burren, he avoids following trends or ideas and operates solely on instinct. I

T'S just unimaginable at times how fickle and how fragile life can be. We could be here today and gone tomorrow, but worse yet is when someone we really love and adore departs from us and we all have lost so many loved ones like that over the past twenty months of our journey through the Coronavirus pandemic.

There are times in our lives when the unexpected and undesired becomes our reality. When things seem to fall apart, moments when life seems to break, and our ability to keep it together weakens. Things can change in an instant and the fragility of our humanity can be quickly brought to focus.

I have experienced that sense of loss and fragility a lot over the past 20 months of the Coronavirus and especially the loss of my beautiful niece Aoife also during that time along with many other family members and close friends and neighbours who have journeyed on to heaven. It has taught me to value each moment because if we are honest with ourselves we know deep down that tomorrow may never come.

Sometimes it is really scary to think of how uncertain life is because it makes you very sensitive to life. Grief can feel very heavy in the chest. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the death of a dream, or the acceptance of our bodies' limitations, at the core is a seed of sadness. But I guess when the inevitable happens we just have to try to be strong and carry on as best as we can day by day. Just as everything is uncertain the only other certain thing is that one day we all have to bid farewell to this world.

We all have to be constantly prepared to exit this world because our last hour is unknown. I just hope and pray that all of us, especially after these long months of uncertainty because of the ongoing challenges of Covid-19, will be able to live more meaningful lives and live life while it is ours to live.

The Light of Your Soul

Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach, the part that we come in contact with in our own daily living. After my niece's Aoife's sad passing last year I have realised that any small, loving, caring, compassionate, merciful, prayerful and calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will

cause the critical mass to tip towards an enduring good and peace.

What is needed for dramatic change for the good to take place is an accumulation of good, honest, loving and caring acts, adding, then adding more and then continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on this beautiful planet we call Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale or wave.

One of the most calming, revitalising, refocusing and powerful actions you can do, to intervene in a stormy world or to make the storm or in this case the virus within you and without, is to stand up and show your own soul.

A Soul for example, is like a shining light on the deck of a ship at sea that shines brightly in dark times.

The light of the soul, actually the light of your soul can throw sparks, can send up flares, build signal fires and cause proper matter to catch fire. To display the light of your soul in shadowy times like these, to be fierce and to show mercy, love, care, compassion toward others, are all acts of immense bravery, kindness, empathy and greatest necessity, especially during these worrying times. Struggling souls like mine, at this bereft time, catch light from other souls, who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult and the fear, this is one of the strongest things you can do.

The Reason is this

In my bones I know something, as do you and if we are honest we all do at times. It is that there can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here. The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours: They are the words and deeds of the One who brought us here. In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: "When a great ship is in harbour and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for. This comes with much love and a prayer that you remember who you came from, and why you came to this beautiful, needful Earth. We will all mourn at some stage in our lives.

My grief is not unique, nor is yours. It is ours, together, and we will see it through together. The normality we think we need to process our trauma may have been swept away, but rushing into the vacuum is something else. These are the new connections, the new shoots that appear after the destruction of nature.

The new friendships, the new ways

of helping each other, the new ways of being, and each one is precious in helping us to build up again our most fearsome strength. In this way - seeing these precious jewels, cradling them gently, nurturing and growing them - we best honour the people we are losing to this deadly Coronavirus disease, and my family in losing our beautiful Aoife and share all the things they have taught us. You don't have to balance the seesaw. You don't have to write the next best seller or be the next top class sports person or the next millionaire. But try to be the reason someone believes in the goodness of people. You are not alone. Rest. Be gentle. Be kind.

As your thought for the week, always remember that life's road is sometimes extremely tough, because the time we have with our loved ones is just simply not long enough, especially when they are taken away tragically or by an awful virus like the Coronavirus. Also another young person sadly passed away on our roads these last few days and well do I and my family know what that is like! Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, neighbours and team mates of Monaghan U20 football captain Brendán Óg Duffy who sadly so tragically passed away in the last week after captaining and guiding his under 20 side into an Ulster Under 20 Football Final.

May he rest in peace and much prayers of strength and comfort to all his family, friends, neighbours, team mates and all the Monaghan and Ireland GAA Fraternity at this very sad and awful time in their lives. You never know what life's journey will throw up at times. A candle of mine lighting for you and your family, friends, neighbours, team mates and all the Monaghan and Irish GAA fraternity and for all people young and old that have died so tragically on our roads over the years. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h'anam dílis.

Here is a lovely prayer poem that I pray by Gloria Ames - "Remember that Jesus will always be there. To hear our problems and to gather our tears, To calm the storms, and to settle the fears. It does not matter how great or how small, Jesus will answer to our every call. Just call on the Lord, it matters not when, His office is not closed at half-past ten.

lFLORA AND FAUNA: Helen Browne is offering guided tours of the Doolin Cave Nature Trail

O MARK this year’s National Heritage Week, Doolin Cave will host a guided tour of the nature trail that surrounds the Doolin Cave Visitor Centre, in the heart of the Burren region.

Doolin Cave, also known as Pol an Ionáin, was formed more than two million years ago.

It was first visited by human explorers in 1952 and was opened to the public in 2006.

Within Doolin Cave ‘The Great Stalactite’ proudly suspends from the roof of the main cave chamber to an impressive length of 23 feet long. It is the longest free-hanging stalactite in Europe.

Helen and John Browne wanted visitors to extend their adventure at Doolin Cave from underground to overground and so the Doolin Cave Nature Trail was born. The theme

of biodiversity is very close to Helen and John’s hearts.

Keeping this theme to the fore they planted native, indigenous shrubs and trees and native wildflower meadows around the grounds of Doolin Cave thus, creating the Doolin Cave Looped Nature Trail.

On Saturday 14th August and Saturday 21st August at 11.30am, Helen Browne will give a guided walk around her labour of love the ‘Doolin Cave Nature Trail’. The nature trail is home to indigenous species of flora along with rare and miniature breeds of animals. While ambling along the Nature Trail, Helen will give you an insight into the flora and fauna found along the trail and why certain varieties of trees, shrubs and plants thrive so well above the limestone cavern.

This is a free event. Social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Tulla to benefit from €10k paint scheme TULLA has been chosen as the one East Clare area to avail of this year’s paint scheme, writes Páraic McMahon.

Agreement was reached by elected members of the Killaloe Municipal District to select Tulla for the 2021 Community Supports Scheme Town/ Village Paint Works which is worth €10,000.

In proposing Tulla, Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) acknowledged the efforts of the local tidy towns to improve the look of the area.

He urged the local authority to take note of the amount of derelict buildings in the town.

“This is a great incentive for every town and village to bring a bit of colour back to it,” Cllr Alan O’Callaghan (FF) commented. Cathaoirleach of the Killaloe MD, Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) outlined, “Tulla needs an upgrade, there is no point saying it don’t need it. We have seen how other villages and towns have progressed after getting the paint scheme”.

EXTRA toilets are to be provided in Fanore and Kilkee as high numbers of visitors continue to choose Clare as their county of choice for domestic holidays, writes Páraic McMahon.

Director of Service with Clare County Council, Leonard Cleary confirmed that the local authority is to provide additional toilets in Fanore and at Diamond Rocks in Kilkee. “As restaurants, bars and hotels reopen post COVID-19, the availability of public conveniences will be extended”.

He stated of the provision of extra toilets, “it is a challenge to provide them in more remote locations without causing more hazards in that it is difficult if they are not maintained continuously. The Council has increased our resources at numerous facilities with additional waste collection services”.

Facilities and appropriate parking have also been identified by the Council in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), Gardaí and relevant agencies including the hospitality sector, the Corofin man added.

No short-term works are to be carried out with the NPWS. Cleary’s comments came in response to a motion from Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) which urged the groups to work in collaboration for the “summer staycation and make the changes necessary including temporary

emergency parking, provision of extra toilet facilities and refuse collection in order to promote greater preparedness for the anticipated influx of tourists”.

Increased resources and manpower are needed to capitalise on the rise in visitors to Clare, Killeen maintained. “The opening up of amenities will dilute the impact of tourists at seaside resorts,” the former primary school principal said as he referenced the addition of extra car parks in Lahinch for the 2019 Irish Open.

“The Gardaí need to be in the loop with Blake’s Corner because it is difficult at the best of times never mind when we have more people in the area”.

Killeen added, “We welcome the tourists, we’re delighted with the business, it underpins the economy of rural and urban Clare”.

Staff within the local authority have responded well to “a tsunami of demand for services,” Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) believed. “I hope the staycationers will enjoy the summer and come back again, maintaining staycations is something we would like to have”.

He viewed it as unfair that a lot of the burden in catering for the numbers of visitors fell to the Council.

East Clare needs assistance with the demand for parking, Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) flagged while Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) stressed the importance of more toilet facilities.

CULTÚRLANN Sweeney is delighted to present ‘’Wild Atlantic Views’’ by visual artist Gene Clohessy.

Gene Clohessy is a visual artist from Limerick now living in Doonbeg, Co. Clare for the last 14 years. Gene has always had an interest and a flair for fine art and crafts and her children Lauren and CJ continually inspire her to follow her passion. In 2018 Gene set up her own studio called ‘’Doonbeg Creative Art Studio’’ to which she received a great positive response.

From her studio she runs workshops both for groups and on a one-to-one basis. Gene’s

skills are broad and she works in a variety of fine art and craft mediums, including painting, needle felting, photography, card making, jewellery and more recently acrylic pour and enamelled copper. Gene is continually renewing her practice and the forms that she uses to express her ideas. ‘’Wild Atlantic Views’’ is her second solo exhibition and in this show she presents yet again colourful, fun and exuberant art works.

The show runs from the 2nd August to 28th of August, 2021 and is open to all members of the community.

lREMEMBERING JAMES: Family, friends and community members gathered in Corofin

on Saturday afternoon for the unveiling of a large plaque in honour of local mechanic, engineer, and inventor James Tierney. Renowned in the village for introducing television in the 60s and creating an electric vehicle for his son in the 70s, his character caught the eye of those in the United States following a BBC and RTÉ interview on one of his most notorious inventions, a yellow submarine. The plaque, located at the side of his ancestral home within the village of Corofin, tells the story of his fruitful life. Working with Corofin Tidy Towns, his granddaughter Lyndsey (37), who fondly remembers him, having been raised in the same house, opened the gathering by sharing some heartfelt sentiments: “I would like to thank everyone for coming today as we unveil this display in memory of James. I myself have fond memories of my grandparents growing up in the home house. Anything I wanted I got, such as a drive on lawnmower, even at the age of 10. We also got doll houses. He wasn’t just a mechanic; he was a carpenter too. PATATAS BRAVAS TAPAS

I

T’S hot as hell outside and my appetite goes right out the window when the weather is this good. I can’t be dealing with big meat and two veg dinners. I much prefer to graze away at lots of nibbly bits and small plates when the weather is this good. That’s why tapas is a brilliant style of dining in my view. Lots of small plates of food lobbed into the center of the table and everyone can help themselves.

Today I will be focusing on Patatas Bravas. A cornerstone of any tapas feast but equally good on its own. Fried potato cubes, sitting on a tomato sauce and topped with garlic aioli. What’s not to love? This recipe serves 4-6 people.

YOU WILL NEED: • Serves 4-6 • 600g waxy potatoes • 60ml olive oil • Rosemary and thyme (a sprig of each) • 1 small onion, finely diced • 1 red chilli if you’re feeling edgy • 400g tin chopped tomatoes • ½ tsp sugar • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 100ml mayonnaise • 2 cloves of crushed garlic • Half a lemon • Some chopped parsley or chives to sprinkle over the top at the end

the tomatoes, sugar, salt and smoked paprika and stir well.

Bring to the boil, and then turn down the heat and simmer for 20 minutes until thick. Take off the heat and adjust your seasoning.

Step 3 We are going to cheat a bit for the garlic aioli. We are gonna get 100 ml of mayonnaise and add 2 crushed garlic cloves some salt and pepper and the juice of half a lemon. You can mix with a fork or a hand blender. It’s up to you.

Step 1 Preheat the oven to 200c. Peel the spuds and cut into 2cm chunks. Put a roasting dish with 30ml olive oil into the oven and leave to heat for 5 minutes, then take it out, toss the potatoes, rosemary and thyme in the hot oil, and bake for roughly 40 minutes until crisp and golden.

Step 2 While the spuds are on we can crack on with the sauces. Fire 30ml of oil into a pan on a medium heat, and fry the onion for about 5 minutes until golden and soft. Lob in the chilli, and cook for another couple of minutes, then add

Step 4 Get your spuds out of the oven and sprinkle with a little salt. Spread the tomato sauce on to the plates, put the spuds on top, then add a drop of aioli and a sprinkle of green stuff and serve straight away as either a delicious snack or as part of a tapas.

Oversized mom jeans have been all the rage this year paired with a simple crop top.

I love this idea for the summer months especially because it compliments any figure. I recommend oversized clothing paired with a tight piece of clothing because it will always compliment the whole look.

WHITE RUNNERS FOR THE WIN Since the series of lockdowns started, we have embraced the flat shoe more than ever before.

This is probably because we have had no reason to wear high heels, but this has worked so much in our favour. White runners with a summer dress or skirt is the most simple yet elegant fashion statement of our time. It creates a trendy style for any summer outfit.

BRIGHT COLOURS ALL DAY EVERYDAY Embracing the bright colours during the summer months can create the most flattering style.

In this week’s column, Joe Melody praises the quality of Clare’s suckler cows

T

HERE is something about a scent and its power to transport you away to another time or place. To even an urbanite, the sweet fragrance of hay wafting through the air on a balmy summer’s breeze can arouse a nostalgia for summers past.

I often feel when we decide on making some hay here that the decision is based more around novelty than practicality.

Hay however is handy and in this country we do not always get the chance to string enough dry warm days together to make nice hay so for old times sake why not make at least the minimum amount.

Anecdotally there is plenty of quality hay already saved. The more forage conserved on the island of Ireland the better, it means that we won’t have to import hay or silage should there be another late spring like 2013 or 2018.

It is food security from an animal point of view. Old hay after all is old gold.

The Department of Agriculture published its report recently on cattle numbers in Ireland giving a county by county breakdown.

What really stood out to me was that Co. Clare has the third most suckler calves born each year at some 66,232 making up just over 66% of calves born in Clare in 2020.

Amidst all the talk of dairying replacing suckling, Clare is still a major player in the industry and a vital hub for producing quality weanlings for export and stores for big finishing farms on the east coast.

When the Sheikhs and Coolmore want nice orange Charolais cattle to graze their extensive stud farms, it is to the marts of Clare they go to acquire their quality stock.

GREAT STOCK: Sucklers on the Melody farm

It is important to remember that much of our county is unsuited to the likes of dairying tillage or fattening cattle.

The sturdy Co. Clare suckler cow has proven herself adaptable and capable of producing something of value in a quality calf.

While the temperatures have been sizzling over the past week, the cattle trade continues on its rich vein of form. This is a great boost to the farmers of the county and a badly needed one.

Our local economy cannot function without many strands of industry.

The humble suckler cow is the four legged steward of much of our landscape.

She prunes down the grass which in turn creates a lush pasture that stops our countryside being encroached with scrub and overgrowth. Clare has a unique economic tapestry

where industries like agriculture and tourism have a symbiotic relationship, our suckler cow is central to this.

The suckler farmer in many cases has off-farm employment, and many of these farmers are employed in Shannon within some field connected with the Airport and tourism.

The lower labour requirement of the suckler cow versus her dairy cousin boded well for this type of part-time farming.

Many of these farmers would tell you whatever they make from their farm is reinvested back into it along with some of their off-farm earnings.

In many cases across rural Clare, this is the model that fields GAA teams and keeps young people in the area and helps stem rural decline. Long live the Suckler cow!

Bed of Silk a gem of the Estuary Way

ABASHEEDA has that romantic vibe etched in its landscape – hills rolling gently into the calm waters of the Estuary, the picturesque village with vernacular fisherman-style cottages and farmhouses nestled by the shore – it is idyllic and has been a type of off-thebeaten track destination for visitors over the years. The Bed of Silk is derived from the Irish translation Leaba (Bed) Sioda (Silk).

Manus McGee and Pàdraig Neylon were two adjoining landowners in the village who knocked heads a few years back and decided to create a unique type of accommodation destination for visitors to the area.

“Labasheeda is unique so we wanted to create something that would be a fitting destination. Our research showed that

the trends in inbound tourism figures to Ireland are couples who are looking for something a little different, or that unique experience,” Manus explained.

“Lab is within 45 minutes of an International Airport, within 90 minutes of two major cities Limerick & Galway as well as the town of Ennis. Sometimes people just want that escape which is within easy reach. So that is where we started the idea of a relaxing getaway for adults with true peace and relaxation being the central theme.”

Beds of Silk Retreat is luxury glamping and the shepherds hut style units are finished to an extremely high standard.

The aromas from the external raw cedar cladding are something to behold. Inside the self-contained unit is a king size bed, kitchenette, toilet and shower. The units have been handcrafted and fin-

ished by local craftsmen and have been finished with stunning materials with a very high level of attention to detail.

“The site itself is surrounded by beautiful trees and natural hedgerows and there is a lovely stream flowing through the site. So it was critical that we use natural materials throughout. It was also very important to us that local tradespeople were involved at the outset. And we think that our philosophy has paid dividends”, Pádraig said.

The units are heated using Biogas which will keep the carbon footprint low. There is also a gas BBQ at each unit along with an outdoor seating area. It’s a short two minute walk to the local pub and grocery store with gorgeous views down to the river along the way.

“3 of our huts opened this summer and another 3 huts are to follow on lat-

er in the year. We hope to make this a year round enterprise which would be more sustainable. It will take a little time but over the years we’re confident we can do this. That’s why we’ve insulated the huts and installed heating, so that comfort can be retained no matter what the weather is like outside” Pádraig explained.

SHOPS across Co Clare have recorded an increase in demand on account of the glorious weather and influx in tourists to the county.

Owner of Spar Lahinch, Robert Kennedy estimated that there were 5,000 people in the village on Saturday and again on Sunday. Water is proving to be the biggest selling item in their store along with fresh fruit and vegetables with a high demand for ice-cream.

He told The Clare Echo, “We’re under pressure with supply the whole time, it is like a tidal wave and no one can prepare you for it. It is so busy with the sun, COVID is forcing staycations. We would normally be very busy but with staycations but this is colossal. We’re not complaining.

It is very hard work but it is very good to have work to get through”.

Robert has been running the store for 21 years, the amount of visitors over the weekend

General Manager of Crowe’s Grocery and Bakery in Mountshannon, Marie Starr revealed that they almost ran out of ice-cream and have been forced to increase their deliveries of icecream due to the hot weather.

Local support continues to be fantastic as Mountshannon, Scariff and Lough Derg experienced a hike in visitors, she said. “We’re very busy all the time, with the hot weather it is bringing a lot of tourists in for ice cream and slushies”. Breakfast items and home baking are also proving popular, “we can’t keep apple tarts in the shop,” the Whitegate woman commented.

“There is great potential for Mountshannon, the harbour is very busy”.

HR Manager of Queally’s SuperValu in Killaloe, Priya Wallace noted the local attractions in the East Clare town have become more popular since the pandemic. She said, “We have seen loads of people from different parts of Ireland, we can tell by the accents there are loads of tourists”.

OLUNTEERS are needed for a new mobile tourist information office planned for the Kilrush Market Square, which hopes to assist visitors as they enter the gateway to West Clare.

The free-standing unit, which will serve as a multi-purpose community centred hub throughout the year was a project co-funded by the Clare Local Development Company’s Market Towns Initiative and implemented by the Kilrush Town Team.

Highlighted as a “key to capturing passing traffic off the ferry from Killimer”, the Town Team identified the need for the tourist office in a bid “to promote the town and the local West Clare area.” The office forms part of the tourism strategy developed by the Town Team under the Tourism Development Plan, which also availed of LEADER funding.

Kilrush Town Team Tourism Lead Irene Hamilton stated: “The square is the heart of the town.

Tourism has been a very important focus area for Kilrush. We have seen a lot changing with the increased numbers in Kilrush the last two years.

“Kilrush has also been building as an activity centre. There are

'This merger makes it ideal to take on the Spa Wells'

by PÁRAIC McMAHON ADDITION of Shannon Heritage staff to Clare County Council reignites the potential to bring the Spa Wells in Lisdoonvarna into the ownership of the local authority, elected representatives have said.

Work is underway for three tourism sites and the retail outlet at the Cliffs of Moher to transfer from the ownership of Shannon Heritage to Clare County Council.

Last October, Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) appealed to the Council to take Lisdoonvarna Spa Wells under its umbrella.

However, Director of Service, Leonard Cleary at the time flagged feasibility studies by Lisdoonvarna Failte CLG and the Rooska & SPA Wells Trust which indicated a multi-million euro investment is required. He admitted that an insufficient staff capacity would prevent the Council’s rural development directorate and West Clare Municipal District from taking the project on, he admitted.

Potential for wellness tourism could be exploited by acquiring the Spa Wells, Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) maintained. He noted that when Killarney became a tourist hotspot because of a visit from Queen Victoria, “Lisdoonvarna was already a Victorian hotspot because of the waters there”.

He described the Clare Tourism Strategy as “an extraordinary piece of policy making” and referenced its mention to wellness. “With 120 staff coming on board from Shannon Heritage with extraordinary expertise in tourism, we should be looking at taking over the Spa Wells to drive wellness in the county. This merger makes it ideal to take on the Spa Wells”.

RELAND is viewed as one of the most desirable locations for data centres and Ennis is now tapping into this potential.

Data centres are often referred to as a singular thing, but in actuality they are composed of a number of technical elements.

These can be broken down into three categories, compute (memory and processing power to run applications), storage (housing important enterprise data) and networking (interconnections between the data centre components and the outside world).

Both software and hardware security measures are a must as the components that the IT system needs to store and manage the most critical resources are vital to its continuous operations.

Combined with technical equipment, a data centre also requires a high amount of facilities infrastructure to keep the hardware and software up and running. This includes power subsystems, uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), ventilation and cooling systems, backup generators and cabling to con-

According to a report by grid operator EirGrid, data centres will put greater demands on electricity supply in Ireland and could account for 29pc of electricity demand in Ireland by 2028.

Tom McNamara of the Development Managers for the Ennis Data Centre, Tom McNamara & Partners detailed that there is an increasing focus on locating data centres away from Dublin and the east coast to reduce pressure on existing grid infrastructure.

“More dispersed data centre developments like this help diversify economic growth and job creation to regions outside of Dublin. Over many years, Ennis, as the largest town in Munster, has been striving to lay the foundations for inward investment and has been successfully building connectivity as part of becoming an 'Information Age Town' and because of its access to power, fibre and location close to Shannon International Airport, it is a natural home for this project,” he stated.

T was never this easy before. When electric cars first launched, a decade ago, those early models came with built-in hassle. Short ranges, inconsistent charging opportunities, high prices, and a sense that you were driving something that was closer to a fridge than a car.

Well, that has all changed and this new Renault Zoe is an exemplar of that change.

When the Zoe originally launched, it suffered from most, if not quite all, of those early electric car shortcomings. Renault kept updating and refining the Zoe, though,

making it better every time, and for 2020 there’s this, the all-new model.

Well, I say all-new... Actually, under the skin, the basic structure and chassis of the Zoe are much as they were, but the body, although familiar, looks a little sharper, and Renault has managed to carve out a little more space inside, so that you no longer have to constantly rub elbows with your front-seat passenger.

Much more importantly, the Zoe’s battery and electric motor are new. The 52kWh battery in Zoe is far, far larger than the pair of AA Duracells you got in the original. In fact, with only an extra 2kWh to play with relative to the Zoe’s closest rivals — the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Cor-

We must disrupt Cork from the front Darach Honan’s CHAMPIONSHIP ANALYSIS

‘THE heat of championship’ took on a very literal meaning in Thurles under the blistering sunshine. The game got off a frantic start with Wexford scoring a point immediately from the throw in and that was as good as it got for them.

Tactically Clare were far superior. Wexford’s formation was dysfunctional as they played without a full forward line, leaving them no target to hit with long ball.

They obviously had planned to run the ball but by filling the middle with their bodies, they crowded themselves out and were easy to break down.

Ryan Taylor, Cathal Malone and David Reidy were particularly active in benefitting with scores at this point.

The Wexford puckout was a source of serious bother for them. Inexplicably, they sent their wing backs up the field to the half forward position.

They also brought out the full forward line and played noone close to the Clare goal resulting in them completely crowding out their own options. They proceeded to hit the ball short to a defender who had no options.

In stark contrast, Lohan

set the Clare team up with enough balance to stifle the Wexford attack while maintaining a forward threat.

Shanagher offered a good long ball option and our forwards remained an attacking threat while also keeping a high work rate to track back.

After Malone’s goal, Clare were good value for their 11-point lead but did take the foot off the gas approaching halftime.

Wexford got a huge boost from a goal they scored against the run of play, which was a result of one of many aimless balls into the Clare half. It looked to be easily dealt with when Conlon intercepted it outside the D before the ball squirted out to Diarmuid O’Keefe who took his chance well. Wexford

closed the gap to five as half time could not come quick enough.

It may be no surprise given the intensity of the heat, that the third quarter led to a slight lull in the action. Clare were able to keep Wexford at bay and maintain the lead we had built. Our full backline were comfortable throughout as they totally outplayed their opponents. Our halfbacks had a more taxing afternoon and that will be cause for some concern before the next round.

We are still wasting possession through long pot shots.

back when those balls could have been delivered to our forwards. We also overplayed the ball a little in the middle and John will be disappointed at being turned over a couple of times in the second half.

The half backline will look to rediscover their form of the Waterford game against a pacy Cork half forward line.

We know management were looking for more from their bench last weekend and they got it in abundance. David McInerney, Jack Browne and Aaron Fitzgerald all came in to bolster the defence. Many would consider Jack a mainstay and that cameo will have done his chances of breaking in no

harm. Mark Rodgers, finishing with two neatly taken scores, and Gary Cooney with his limited time impressed with a poacher’s goal.

The draw on Monday threw up a repeat of the 2013 final.

Cork had a productive league and scored 12 goals in their opening two games, many of which came from direct running and overlaps. They have huge pace through Robbie O’Flynn, Shane Kingston and Darragh Fitzgibbon who will cause problems if they can get a run on our defenders.

Cork had a noticeable style change where they reverted to their short passing game more associated with their teams of the 2000s. Donal

O’Grady’s influence is obvious here, as they work the ball out of the defence. When working well it can be hard to combat, and at times it flows beautifully. However, when broken down by opposition it looked a shambles and there is a huge opportunity for the Clare forwards to dispossess Cork high up the field and be on the front foot in possession immediately. One of our biggest strengths this year has been the work rate of our forwards who were able to turn over Wexford regularly in our last outing.

This will be a huge opportunity for Clare to disrupt the Cork gameplan and give us a platform to go on and win.

NO NEW INJURY CONCERNS

NO NEW injuries have been reported in the Clare senior hurling camp while Shane O’Donnell and Cian Galvin are both major doubts for the upcoming club championship.

Man of the match in the 2013 All-Ireland SHC final replay, O’Donnell has not featured for the county since the beginning of June when he scored 0-02 against Dublin in the Allianz National Hurling League.

Prior to their final league outing with Kilkenny, the Éire Óg forward sustained a concussion injury and has not returned to training since then. The Ennis man is believed to be a major doubt for the upcoming club championship and is not expected to feature for Clare this year.

O’Donnell has not been spotted at any of Clare’s championship matches. When asked

by The Clare Echo for an update on the

All-Ireland winner’s recovery, Clare boss Brian Lohan said, “Shane is making progress, he is making progress so we’re just hoping he will be okay regardless of hurling at all”.

Dr Harty Cup winning joint captain Cian Galvin is also set for a spell on the sidelines.

The Clarecastle native underwent an operation last Friday which has ruled him out for the rest of the inter-county championship and is likely to leave him out of action for six months and unavailable for the Magpies senior hurlers.

Clare will also be without Newmarket-on-Fergus’ Colin Guilfoyle for this week’s qualifier clash against Cork. The primary school teacher sustained a hand injury in training in recent weeks which have put him out of the reckoning for a place in the matchday twenty six.

SEAN Doyle, Clare U20 hurling manager, after his side’s defeat to Limerick said that the 10-point defeat doesn’t reflect the standard of hurler being produced in Clare.

“As a management team we are very disappointed. We thought we would get more out of this. We were down players but I still expected a closer game and it was disappointing the way it finished out”.

“Our six backs did fine Adam Hogan had a speldid game at corner back, Darragh Healy worked hard at full back and Aidan Moriarty at centre back read the game well. We didn’t have enough energy in the middle third, we needed that to drive forward. You can see the difference in S and C in the Limerick boys. We had the best players on view out there bar the ones missing. We are disappointed”.

“The lads kept going to the bitter end. The Limerick backs are good. We made a lot of mistakes, a lot of misplaced balls that should not happen at this level. You can’t give away the ball and if we look back on that game, you cant give 8 or 9 points to these boys and then expect to get it back”.

Another Cusack Cup for Miltown SEAMUS HAYES THE winners of five of the seven adult football leagues were confirmed at the weekend with St Josephs Miltown (Cusack Cup), Lissycasey (Division 2, Garry Cup), Cratloe (Div 3), Doonbeg (Div 5) and Ennistymon (Div 7) all capturing the spoils.

Going into the last round of Cusack Cup games, Miltown, Ennistymon and St. Breckans were all unbeaten with three wins and a draw from their opening four games. St. Breckans suffered their first defeat while Ennistymon were held to a draw by Kildysart leaving Miltown the only unbeaten team.

Lissycasey were crowned division 2 champions, receiving a walkover on Saturday from Shannon Gaels who cited injuries as the reason for their inability to field a team.

A six point win for St Josephs over Kilrush Shamrocks sealed second place in the division for the Doora-Barefield outfit.

Cratloe proved too strong for Wolfe Tones in Shannon to seal Division 3. This was the home side’s first defeat of the campaign.

In division 5, Doonbeg completed the campaign with victory over Meelick who finished the game with 10 men having had five sent off while Doonbeg had one player dismissed. The magpies went through this league with full points.

Ennistymon did likewise to win division 7 beating Lissycasey in their final group game on Saturday.

St Josephs Miltown 2-15 Clondegad 1-11 Champions in 2019, Miltown St. Josephs retained the Cusack Cup after a year of the competition’s hiatus with this merited win over Clondegad on Saturday.

The visitors scored first but the home side responded with a brace of points before Eoin Cleary struck for the game’s first goal. Clondegad responded with a goal from Podge McMahon but when the half

time whistle sounded Miltown were 1-9 to 1-6 in front. With Clare captain Cleary in sparkling form and a second goal to boot, the home side sealed victory on a day when Cleary’s tally was 2-7.

Kilmurry-Ibrickane 1-15 St Breckans 1-12 Having failed to field a team in the previous round against Ennistymon, Kilmurry-Ibrickane recorded their second win when they accounted for hitherto unbeaten St Breckans at Quilty on Saturday.

Fielding their strongest team to date, Andrew Shannon struck for their goal in the early minutes. Colm O’Brien replied with a like score for the Lisdoonvarna side and the side were level at the half way point with 1-7 each. A strong finish from the home side for whom Daryn Callinan and Keelan Sexton kicked some good points, proved decisive. Éire Óg 0-10 Doonbeg 1-7 Éire Óg and Doonbeg who will meet in the senior championship shared the spoils win the concluding round of the Cusack Cup in Ennis. David Tubridy top scored for the magpies with 0-4 while Brian Egan was the game’s goalscorer as they collected their first point in this campaign. Philip Talty and Gavin Cooney each scored 0-4 for the Ennis side that welcomed their Clare under 20s, Manus Doherty, Mark McInerney and Gavin D’Auria back from inter county duty.

Ennistymon 3-12 Kildysart 2-15 The spoils were shared at Ennistymon on Saturday. Kildysart got a good early lead and raced six points clear but the home side fought back and were just two points adrift at the break.

It was tit for tat throughout the second half and a share of the spoils was probably a fair result on the day.

The winner’s goals came from John Murphy, Michael Leigh and Sean McConigley while Kildysart goalscorers were Kieran O’Brien and Keith O’Connor.

Points difference separates top three in U15 Football

THE Under 15 Football Championship contenders were reduced by a third (21 to 14) on Monday evening after the group stages concluded in all three divisions.

In Division 1, four goals from Gearoid Barry, Neil Hegarty, Daniel Brody and Seanaí McMahon proved just enough for Ennistymon to edge a compelling away tie against St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield by 4-05 to 2-10 but not sufficient to halt their hosts from securing the coveted top spot in the table.

With Doora/Barefield (+38), Lissycasey (+31) and Ennistymon (+28) finishing on level points, score difference dictated that St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield are paired with fourth placed Clondegad in the semi-finals on Wednesday week while in the other penultimate stage clash, Lissycasey and Ennistymon are set for yet another showdown following their U14 Division 1 Final encounter.

In the U15 Div 2, Cooraclare protected

their perfect start to clinch Group 1 and progress directly to the semi-final stage where they will be joined by Clooney-Quin who squeezed through on score difference after finishing joint-top with Wolfe Tones and Parteen. With Wolfe Tones storming to the finish line with sizeable wins over Éire Óg and Cratloe, Clooney-Quin had to overcome the Townies by 5-9 to 3-9 on Monday to confirm their passage to the last four.

Group 1 runners-up Corofin meet Parteen while Wolfe Tones face St Joseph’s Miltown who themselves only cemented their knockout place thanks to a final round home win over Claecastle by 4-11 to 3-06.

Also set for early August are the Under 15 Division 3 Football Championship Semi-Finals comprising of a derby between an unblemished Kilmurry Ibrickane and Doonbeg while St Breckan’s and Naomh Eoin/O’Curry’s/Kilkee also face-off.

Ballyvaughan’s experience may prove decisive in Junior A decider

by SEAMUS HAYES INTERMEDIATE status awaits the winner of this Saturday’s 2020 junior A football championship final between Ballyvaughan and the Banner which will take place at Hennessy Park in Miltown with a throw in time of 7.15p.m. It’s a final that both teams have been eagerly awaiting since they qualified last year before the lockdown put paid to playing the game.

Both clubs will have little time to rest as the winners will face into the intermediate championship a week later while the losers on this Saturday will set out on the road of trying to get back to the 2021 Junior A final and going a step further.

Ballyvaughan will carry the favourites t a g as they seek to bridge a 17 year gap to their last junior A title.

Following that success they went on to win the intermediate title in 2007 and they made a successful start to the senior championship the following year when they defeated a highly fancied Éire Óg side.

Pat Costelloe manages the North Clare side with James Callinan, Ruth Costelloe, Brian McGann and Killian Maher as selectors while Killian Malone is the coach.

Kieran Casey and Mark Walsh are survivors from the junior winning team of 2003 while Cian

Walsh, Damian McNamara, John Martyn, Phelim Coyne and James Hynes were key to the 2007 intermediate success. Captain is James Howard.

The Banner are managed by John Burke and his management team includes Martin Griffin, Flan O’Halloran, Paddy Hogan and Pat Crotty.

They go into this final without one of the brightest young players in Clare GAA in Shane Meehan who misses out due to injury. His loss is a huge blow to the Ennis based side which lost the final of this championship in 2019 when Michael Cusacks were crowned champions.

The team is captained by Cian Rynne and amongst those challenging for places in Saturday’s team are Eoin and Niall Walsh and Thomas Meenaghan, all three of whom were part of the Clare U20 panel this year. Victory for the Banner would represent major progress for this young club and would complete a junior hurling/ football double for 2020 as they captured the junior B hurling crown last year.

Football manager John Burke has played a key part in the club’s progress in football.

He led them to the junior B title and managed them to the A final in 2019 and a win this week would be a just reward for his efforts over the years. The sides met three weeks ago in the league when the Banner were 0-13 to 0-8 winners but both sides were short players on that occasion.

The popular view is that there is little between the teams and that the outcome will go down to the wire.

It was really easy to motivate these girls because there wasn’t a whole pile of people that gave us much of a chance here today. It was an opportunity for us to go out, play, enjoy ourselves and show what we’re capable of doing so I’m delighted to get across the line to be honest.

“We took a lot of stick last week for the way that we beat Fermanagh. I mean we missed a lot of opportunities and it just goes to show what difference a week can make. Last week we missed two penalties and multiples scoring opportunities whereas this week we got those goals and it allowed us to grow in confidence so it was a massive turnaround.

“We were hungry because we had nothing to lose. Very few in the country gave us a hope of beating Clare and we ultimately did it for ourselves because

we want to progress up through the leagues in due course so the only way to develop is to beat good teams like this.

“Topping the group wasn’t something that we were looking to do. We just wanted to work on our performances, build consistency and allow the results to look after themselves. “And yes, it is a massive added bonus to top the group because our initial objective was to not be in a relegation dogfight but now anything can happen.”

EVAN TALTY, CLARE MANAGER “It was always something that could happen as they [Leitrim] had a game played before us and were probably up to the pace of championship.

“We started well and were 1-2 to 0-1 up but the longer we left them in the game, the more they grew in confidence. We then started to panic, reverted to type and we didn’t play to our system which made us look pretty average then. It

meant that we ultimately couldn’t break them down and when we did, we left ourselves wide open at the back with some very basic schoolgirl errors from the goals they conceded.

“The most disappointing thing from my point of view is that the way we’ve been playing in challenge matches and training, we didn’t bring any of that here today. We looked very ordinary and very clueless whereas we have a pretty unique system that we

play but we couldn’t see any of that today. There were no options off the shoulder, we weren’t kicking the ball in and made basic errors by bringing the ball into the tackle.

“In training they were going really well and there was great competition for places and sometimes if things are going too well, you can perhaps get overconfident. So maybe there was a bit of that about it as well today but as we saw last week with Longford and

Westmeath, anything can happen in championship football so we should have been ready for this.

“But look, we’re still in the championship and if we can get a performance against Fermanagh, we’re still in the same position as if we had won today. However, for our long-term ambitions, that wasn’t next or near good enough.”

Clare are capable of causing an upset when they travel to Galway this Saturday for their second outing of the All-Ireland senior camogie championship.

Reflecting on Clare’s opening round six point loss to Kilkenny, coach Conor Dolan said. “They are All-Ireland champions and league champions for one reason, they are clinical in front of the posts. Being honest I thought we were the better team for 75% of that game but we killed ourselves in the first fifteen minutes giving away stupid frees.

Denise Gaule is one of the best freetakers in the country and she punished us. They kept us at arms length with that five point advantage”.

“We can’t fault the girls, they have a fantastic attitude, they worked well, kept it going to the very end. Their keeper made two

or three great saves at the end. We finished very strong and its still there for us. We face Galway next week and we will go again”, Dolan added.

Neither side was used to the conditions of the searing heat for Saturday’s game, Dolan remarked. The Meelick native was well aware

of the task facing the Banner in trying to overturn Galway away from home.

“It’s massive but we have proved in the league that we are capable of being up in the top group. We went toe to toe with Galway in the league. We outscored them but they got three soft goals, It was twelve scores to five in the first half. They ended up winning by 5 points. Our girls showed massive character up there and we will be expecting the same and a little bit more next week.

We have a couple of girls back in the panel now that didn’t play that day”.

Dolan concluded, “We are as good as what’s there, it’s just getting that belief into the girls. It’s slowly but surely happening.

From now on we are concentrating on Galway. It’s still there and we still have a chance

of getting to the quarter finals. Anything could happen in this group yet”.

AOMI Carroll’s Olympic dream begins this Saturday when the Irish hockey side face South Africa in their Pool A opener.

Getting to the Tokyo Olympics was made all the more difficult as Naomi’s involvement with the national side was put into jeopardy when she sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2018; this coming months off the back of the Irish side reaching the World Cup final.

Despite the rigorous rehabilitation and the task on her hand to get back into contention with the national side, the Cratloe woman remained determined as ever.

She has done this remarkably with the Irish and Maths teacher at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh among Ireland’s most impressive performers during the recent European championships. “With me a lot has come to my mindset since I came back from injury and just enjoying everything, not really focusing on mistakes and looking to improve on everything I’ve been asked to do,” Naomi told The Clare Echo.

A former dual player for Clare’s senior camogie and intermediate ladies football side, the past pu-

pil of St Patrick’s Comprehensive in Shannon also lined out at U17 level for her country in soccer. Becoming an Olympian is the latest addition to her impressive CV. The fact that she hasn’t played in Croke Park is something she is keen to rectify in the coming years.

Part of a gifted sporting generation in Cratloe that also includes All-Star siblings Conor and Maire McGrath and All-Ireland winners Podge Collins, Conor Ryan, Sean Collins, Cathal McInerney and Liam Markham, Naomi is fully appreciative of the people that shaped her into a sporting star. “I’ve been very lucky growing up to have had the opportunity to play with such talented people. Myself and Maire McGrath started together and we would still be in constant contact, to have someone like that around you and pushing you all the time is huge. For such a small area, there is so much achievement.”

Becoming a member of Team Ireland was always a dream for Naomi. “When I was younger it was something I would have looked at, you’d think it was farfetched watching the Olympics, the likes of Sonia O’Sullivan and Katie Taylor, it was always a dream of mine. Getting injured made me think it was a stretch too far,” she revealed.

come of it and you’ll try get back as fast as you can. People will ask questions of you and they’d say ‘will you do this, will you do that’ but you have to come across confident that it will happen, there is a huge amount of work that goes in the background. First of all, I got back in with the Irish indoor squad so I was lucky to be in there and get back competing at a high level before I got back to the outdoor team, a lot of it is getting opportunities and taking it.”

It was Sonia who she looked up to but over the coming weeks, young girls in places such as Bodyke, Clonlara, Doora and further afield will take inspiration from the

Her downtime in Tokyo will be occupied by reading a mix of genres on the Kindle. But back in Cratloe, excitement levels will ratchet up. Getting to the Olympics ‘the best reward’ for Ballina’s Finn

GETTING to the Olympic stage is “the best reward one can get from their sport,” according to Ballina swimmer Finn McGeever.

He is part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team that will take to the water in Tokyo and the past pupil of St Anne’s Community College in Killaloe is anxious to make a splash.

Now in his second year studying Maths and Physics at UL, Finn had been part of the National Transition swimming squad in Limerick, reaching the European Junior Championships in 2018 in Helsinki.

Enjoyment has become a key aspect of his performance. “Before when I was swimming bad, swimming

was just my entire life. I was in college and I wasn’t going out much because of swimming and I just think it was the wrong decision.

A happy swimmer is a fast swimmer, so I learned to enjoy myself ”.

This shift in perspec-

tive arrived after he broke his left arm less than two years ago, a run of poor form before the onset of COVID-19 made him question his future in the sport, “I was nearly ready to hang up the hat and goggles,” he admitted.

Regular swims in Lough Derg with his mother Roisin combined with Zoom classes and use of a punching bag helped to find form and speed.

In April, he set the new Irish record for 400m freestyle with a time of 3:52:83 as he knocked a very impressive fifteen seconds off his preliminary time.

For Tokyo, Finn is one of two ‘relay only’ swimmers Jack McMillan is the other, they will compete alongside Brendan Hyland and Shane Ryan. For the future, he is optimistic, “I’m just hopeful anyway for the future of my swimming just because things are kind of going well and when this is happening, sport almost feels like you can’t be stopped. It just feels great”.

Since her place on the Irish team was confirmed, the 28 year old was bowled over with the level of support received. “I’ve been incredibly lucky, there was a week or so when my phone didn’t stop and which was mad with messages from everyone I’ve played with before and against at all different levels with the Banner, Sixmilebridge, Lifford Ladies, Clare camogie and football. The support has been incredible and in particular my family, they’ve been there since the very start and that support around you does help you all the time.”

With four games in a seven day window, Ireland’s hockey side come up against South Africa, Holland, Germany and India. The target according to Naomi is a quarter-final spot, “It is our first time going so there is huge excitement but there won’t be a huge emphasis on us because we’ve come off the back of a sixth place finish in the Europeans so there won’t be that pressure on us. We’re hugely excited, I definitely think that we can target a couple of games in the group and if we get to a quarter-final stage then after that anything can happen.”

'Once in a lifetime' for Shannon's Ed Slattery IRELAND’S rugby sevens team secured last ditch qualification for the Tokyo Olympics last month, their set-up includes a Shannon man in a prominent position.

Ed Slattery is the side’s strength and conditioning coach, the Shannon native has worked with the IRFU for the past six years but this will be his first foray into the Olympic sphere in what he labelled “a once in a lifetime opportunity”.

During his four year studies at LIT, Ed volunteered with Munster Rugby in S&C roles while also getting involved with the Tipperary minor hurlers. “When I finished college I was lucky to move up to Dublin and get a position with the IRFU with the women’s 15 team and I did four years with them, a 6 Nations and a World Cup, through

that I started working with the Men and Women’s 7s teams,” he recounted”.

Since then he transitioned to working full-time with the IRFU’s 7s team and since COVID-19 he has been fully immersed with the men’s team.

Coming from a staunch rugby family, it comes as no surprise to see Ed holding such a prominent role. Jimmy Slatttery Park, the home of St Senans RFC in Shannoon is named after his late father, a former President of the club.

“Rugby was always in the family and in the blood,” Slattery outlined.

Also the Head of S&C with Ballyboden St Enda’s, Slattery will for now keep his focus on matters in Tokyo with Ireland’s first outing on July 26th.

Longest wait of all for Ballyvaughan’s Liam BRITTANY born but Ballyvaughan bred, Liam Jegou has expressed confidence with his preparation ahead of Sunday’s heats of the C1 category for the Kasai Canoe Slalom Centre in Tokyo.

Excitement levels were rising as Liam spoke to The Clare Echo from Tokyo this week. “It feels a bit surreal, it feels like we’ve been waiting for this forever. I qualified at the end of 2019, that is a long time to wait, we’re finally here and it’s all starting to get real.”

Born in Brittany, Liam shortly moved to Switzerland before spending five years in Ballyvaughan from the age of two to seven with his parents Mark Jegou and Denise Sheridan and his sister Chloe. Mark had a sea kayaking business while Denise worked as nurse with Dr John O’Dea. Ballyvaughan has nothing but positive memories for the 25 year old. “I went to Ballyvaughan NS and have great memories of playing gaelic football there and of kayaking with my Dad seeing seals and dolphins, great memories for a child because when I went to France people wouldn’t even believe me that I went kayaking with dolphins, it is something you can do in the West of Ireland that is brilliant. My Dad worked as an elf in Ailwee Caves and I couldn’t understand at Christmas how Santa Claus knew exactly what I wanted, it blew my mind every time.

I love going back to Ballyvaughan... I will definitely try to get back after the Games.”

Friends of his will be supporting him from Ballyvaughan while his Irish “diaspora family” in Mayo, Dublin, Europe, the United States and France will also provide encourage. So too will his grandfather Leonard Sheridan in Shannon and his aunt Trixie and her husband Don Murphy in Newmarket-on-Fergus.

As the first confirmed member of

Team Ireland, Liam had the longest wait of all with the Games deferred one year due to the pandemic, “it was madness, 2020 was just crazy, who could have predicted something like it”.

Unsurprisingly, Liam was not idle with the extra time at his disposal. “I think I really put it to good use to better myself as an athlete and a paddler, I love what I do, I love my sport, I feel I’ve the best job in the world. I spent the summer training a lot and I probably paddled more than I usually would, we were competing during summer but in 2020 we barely got any competitions so I was out on the water training the whole time. It was different to what I’m used to over the last few years but it was good and I got to paddle with some of the younger kids from my club in the north of France. We made it work, we had two competitions towards the end of the year which were brilliant to boost motivation going into winter training.”

He made history in November when winning Ireland’s first gold medal in a canoe slalom World event. The challenge he now has is to qualify for Monday’s semi-final and final runs. “I know I’m super confident in the way that I prepared, I know I’m good enough for it. It’s sport so you have to perform on the day, I’m excited to go out there and do my best and try get a final spot.”

Technical excellence is essential for the sport. It is mainly a race against the clock with 25 numbered gates to paddle through, eight of which are upstream. 100 seconds would be the target to complete the route, one mistake could be fatal.

Jegou explained, “The technical aspect is huge in canoe slalom and it’s something I’ve been working on since I sat down in a canoe all those years ago. I was very lucky to have my Dad as a coach growing up, he was really big on technique and finesse on

the water and using the water to your advantage, that definitely helped and there is the huge physical aspect of the sport that comes later... Technique is years and years of work especially in a sport like slalom.”

Mike Corcoran was the last Irish representative in the Olympics for the canoe slalom back in 1996, the same year that Liam was born. He admitted that it is easier to progress in the sport if you are living abroad. “I’d be hopeful in the future canoe slalom would really develop in Ireland, I think it is a brilliant sport, maybe I’m biased but it is a sport we could be really good at and we are good at, we just need the infrastructure. It is really important when you’re young to find a passion be it sport or whatever, if I can inspire younger generations to take up something and be there absolutely best at it that would be brilliant”.

His time spent in Clare may have been short but Liam has never had any doubts about wanting to represent Ireland. “It is one of those things you don’t really

pick, I remember going to a restaurant or a bar with my Dad when I was little after we just moved to France, the 6 Nations was on and Ireland were playing France, I was pissed off because it must have been one of those years where the French were really good at rugby. You just don’t choose, the fact that I moved to France at an age where you’re building your identify and I didn’t speak French so I was identified as the Irish guy by all my friends and that has stayed with me for life.”

Family will not be with him this week but Liam maintains the clear focus that will be required in abundance once he steps into the canoe. “At this stage I’m really grateful to be out here and happy that it is all going ahead, I went through every single emotion, being disappointed and not caring, now I’m really happy I can be at the Olympics and do my best. Sure there won’t be spectators, my family won’t be allowed in but the medals are the same colour.”

Lahinch’s Talty leads Team Ireland swimming prep

LAHINCH man is leading the preparations of Team Ireland’s swimmers as they dive head first into the Tokyo Olympics.

Since November 2018, Paul Talty has held the role of Associate Head of Performance Services (Physical) at Swim Ireland. His move from S&C coach at Sport Northern Ireland Sports Institute to his current role with Swim Ireland was “a sliding doors moment, I was in the right place at the right time.”

His primary responsibility focuses on the physical preparation of athletes. He delivers the strength and power programmes for athletes training full-time in the National Centre in Dublin. When it comes to travelling for competitions, Paul will ensure athletes have the ap-

propriate sport science and support around them.

“When we go away to competitions like this, all the hard work has been done, it is just about helping to support the refining of preparations for competitions and in many ways, people in sport science support roles when it comes to competitions like this you will find yourself being a jack of all trades in some ways, I could find myself picking up the laundry bag or in the gym.”

Aspirations of becoming an Olympian were not too dominant during Talty’s childhood, with his interests fixed on hurling and football so the thought of getting the chance to go to the Games was a distant notion. Paul is the younger brother of county councillor Shane and Noirin and the son of Mairian and the late Francis who was a postmaster for over three decades.

Speaking to The Clare Echo,

Paul described his involvement with swimming as “coincidental”.

Formerly a member of the SeaWorld swimming club in Lahinch, he admitted that he was never overly proficient in competitions.

Undertaking a sport science degree in UL after completing the Leaving Certificate in 2005 was a case of going against the grain for the Ennistymon CBS past pupil. “At that time sport science was still a fairly new entity in Ireland, the first sport science degree course in Ireland was established in around 1995 at the University of Limerick. “ I t

was something a little out of the ordinary in a way but as well at the time I hadn’t the subjects to apply for physiotherapy.” Despite this, Paul found that sport performance piqued his interest more than physiotherapy, “and that’s how it ended up I going down the strength and conditioning line”.

Leading the preparation of Ireland’s swimmers for an Olympics is the “pinnacle” for anyone in his line of work. “When you’re working as a strength and conditioning coach in Olympic sport, this is the pinnacle when you get an opportunity to support athletes in preparation for the world’s biggest event, it doesn’t get more prestigious or exciting than that. Unquestionably there will be

memories to last a lifetime.”

For the Irish swimmers, lifetime best performances are essential, Talty outlined. “For us as a swimming nation we don’t have a particularly strong record at Olympic Games levels, our primary ambition for all our swimmers is to go out and produce lifetime best performances at the Olympic Games and see where that takes us. The reality is for the vast majority, best performances will be required to advance out of the heats and into the semi-finals and onwards from there. Once you start advancing through the rounds, championship events can start taking on a life of their own and who knows from there. Priority number one for us is get there and produce lifetime best performances at the event that matters”.

Martin Griffin (22) was in third spot with 41 points followed by Padraig Hayes (25) with 40 points, Kieran Golden (13) with 40 points and Brian Shanahan (19) who also has 40 points.

In the weekend’s singles stableford competition the winner was Hugh McNally from Sean Moloney with Kieran Golden in third spot. The nines were won by Sean Moloney junior and Michael Horgan.

Five Clare women in Munster squad FIVE Clare women have been included in an extended 39-woman squad ahead of the Senior Women Interprovincial Championships which take place in August and September.

Kilmaley’s Eilish Cahill and Ennis trio Aoife Corey, Alana McInerney, Chisom Ugweru (pictured, photo by John Mangan) all of whom are members of Ennis RFC have made the squad alongside Kilkishen’s Clodagh O’Halloran who plays for UL Bohs.

The Munster Rugby Senior Women’s Head Coach for the campaign is Old Crescent and Crescent College Comprehensive coach Matt Brown who previously coached the province’s female U18 side.

Former Ireland captain and current UL Bohs Women’s Head Coach Niamh Briggs is the Backs Coach with ex-Munster prop Mike Storey assuming the position of Forwards Coach. They are joined by technical coach Willie Shubart and team manager Sara Hartigan.

Members of the Ireland’s women’s squad will not be available for selection ahead of their World Cup qualifiers. The Senior Women’s Interprovincial Championship will take place on three successive weekends – August 28th, September 4th and September 11th.

A finalised squad will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Sixth place finish for Casey at Euros ENNIS’ Dean Casey recorded a sixth place finish in the final of the men’s 5000m final at the U20 European Championships.

Casey finished sixth in a time of 14.40.74 ahead of fellow Irish men Abdel Laadjel (Donore Harriers) in eleventh place in a time of 14.50.07 and Callum Morgan (St. Malachy’s AC) who was home in twenty first spot with a time of 15.15.52.

Dean is only the second Irish Junior to record a time under fourteen minutes in this distance, his sixth place finish is the latest achievement to a very promising career. The Ennis track athlete is trained by Pat Hogan.

Success for Gavin’s Ballyea Sydney BALLYEA Sydney claimed the spoils in the Michael Tobin Memorial Sweepstake over the weekend.

It was another busy last weekend at the Limerick Track with the Final of The Michael Tobin Memorial Sweepstake on Saturday Night the main focus of attention.

The Michael Tobin Memorial A4 525 has provided some brilliant racing at the Dock Road circuit in the past three weeks and Saturday night’s €1800 decider saw Ballyea Sydney follow up on his terrific semi final victory with another emphatic display on the night that mattered.

Owned by popular Ballyea man Noel Gavin, Ballyea Sydney went to traps a 7/2 chance in the market and he was quickest into stride wearing the black jacket where he immediately drifted wide on the run to the opening corner. A closely run contest entering the first bend, Blastoff Butch was making swift progress in trap two but as Ballyea Sydney swooped the corner, both greyhounds came together and it was ‘Sydney’ who rode the bump better to go clear.

Taking a length advantage into the back straight, the son of Droopys Sydney - Sarista, trained by Tom Flanagan of Ennistymon, maintained a good gallop down the back and he extended his lead entering the home straight. Staying on powerfully thereafter, Ballyea Sydney stormed across the line to seal a four length win, The time was 29.04.

Friday night’s card at the Galway Track saw the semi-final of the three Welcome Back To Sports Stakes. The starter got them away as one for the opening Semi Final of the A2 525 Stake but as they raced towards the opening bend the Jack Browne of Ballyea owned Cascade King showed the best early on to lead by a length from Springwell Thomo as they approached the opening bend. Tracking well out front Cascade King opened up a two length advantage on his rivals heading towards the halfway mark. Leaving the back straight the lead was still a couple of lengths but off the home bend Springwell Thomo and Come On Charlie began to close but Cascade King(Droopys Sydney-Coolavanny Spice) held off Springwell Thomo by half a length in 28.95.

In the early strides of the opening semi-final of theA3 550 Stake, all six runners were lined across the track but on the long run towards the opening bend the Michael Costello of Ballyvaughan owned Pinnacle Rio showed pace towards the inner to lead by over a

length to Springwell Janey and Upandatit with Millrose Brandy in fourth place entering the back straight. Out front though Pinnacle Rio set sail for home racing towards halfway and gradually increasing his advantage racing along the back the son of Rio Quattro and Fawn Samantha routed his rivals headed by Upandatit and Millrose Brandy by upwards of five and a half lengths in 30.38.

Both Croaghill Linda and Ballylean Rogue were smartly into stride in the second semi-final and the pair matched strides on the long run to the opening bend where Ballylean Rogue kicked on to lead by two lengths entering the back straight. Racing along the back Ballylean Rogue led from Croaghill Linda as the Colm Fitzgerald of Kilrush owned Hazlehill Hare began to close on the pair on the wide outside. Off the home bend Ballylean Rogue still led but Hazlehill Hare swooped late to score by half a length from Ballylean Rogue in 30.45.

In the opening heat of the Grangeeview Ten Stake on Saturday night’s card, Grangeview Best came away well in the centre of the track but on the run towards the opening bend the Hey-You-Sir Syndicate of Ennis owned Askingforafriend surged through on the leaders inner to take command rounding the opening bend. Turning down the back Askingforafriend opened up a three length advantage over Grangeview Ten and Raha Ranger. Approaching the penultimate corner the lead was still three lengths as Raha Ranger began to close but the Shane Flannagan of Rockmount, Ennis handled Askingforafriend was still three parts of a to the good at the line in 29.13.
