Seaside businesses feel heat of busiest summer in memory

PERFECT storm of forced staycationers and soaring summer temperatures have led to the busiest summer in living memory at Clare coastal destinations. Owner of Spar Lahinch, Robert Kennedy estimated that there were 5,000 people in the village on Saturday and again on Sunday. “It is like a tidal wave and no one
can prepare you for it. It is so busy with the sun, COVID is forcing staycations. We would normally be very busy but with staycations but this is colossal. We’re not complaining. It is very hard work but it is very good to have work to get through”. Robert has been running the store for twenty one years, the amount of visitors over the weekend cannot be surpassed. “I can honestly say I’m born and bred in Lahinch and I’ve never seen the volumes”. Meanwhile, concerns over traffic management have been raised across the county as cars clamber to the tourist hotspots. In

one instance, emergency services “struggled to get through” to the scene of an incident in Kilkee due to “cars parked illegally and trailers abandoned”. Speaking on Tuesday, Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) said it was very concerning that a woman who was in need of “serious medical attention” was left waiting for care due to “poor traffic management” hindering the access for emergency services.
