Events in Shannon ‘like Wild West’ VENTS that occurred in Shannon over a four day period in the past week have been compared with scenes from “the Wild West”.

Tensions had been building between two families within the town prior to the release of a firearm on Wednesday last. No individuals were injured in this incident but it caused deep worry within the community.

A Garda investigation later resulted in the retrieval of the firearm and the arrests of two men. Sergeant Seamus Mulligan has told The Clare Echo that calm has returned to Shannon amid vocal concerns since the incident.

Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) was among those to air his frustrations. Speaking at a meeting of the Shannon Municipal District on Tuesday he expressed the view that the activity in Shannon resembled the Wild West in what he coined “absolutely disgraceful behaviour”.

‘We cannot tolerate Direct Provision any longer’

WEST Clare councillor has flagged that Direct Provision could be regarded as the modern day equivalent to Mother and Baby Homes if it is not abolished, writes Páraic McMahon.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) supported requests from fellow elected representatives that Clare County Council issue a fulsome apology for its involvement in the ownership of the County Clare Nursery Home which was the only registered Mother and Baby home in Clare.

By the end of April 2020, there were approximately 7,400 men, women and children living in the 38 direct provision centres across 17 counties in Ireland.

Direct Provision was originally introduced as an emergency measure in 1999, four years later there were almost 12,000 applications for asylum.

The system of asylum seeker accommodation and the length of time people spend in Direct Provision has been criticised by human rights watchdogs, with

the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission labelling the delays faced by asylum applicants as “systemic and pernicious.”

As he acknowledged the discussion was focused on past and historic actions, Cllr Murphy stated, “”It is also incumbent on us to ensure another group of councillors and a Council Executive aren’t apologising in thirty years time for stuff that is happening right now

and I include Direct Provision in the centre of that”.

“It is a stain on us as a country to tolerate Direct Provision any longer,” the Kilkee representative added.

Under the Programme for Government (PfG) agreed

by Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and The Green Party last June, there is a commitment to end Direct Provision under the lifetime of the current Government.

Shannon ‘like The Wild West' CENES in Shannon over the past week have been equated with "The Wild West".

Councillors expressed their concern with the "serious situation" that has developed within Shannon that saw the release of a firearm, two arrests coupled with the setting up of an illegal encampment in Illaunmanagh.

Disgust was the feeling relayed to Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) by local constituents. "People are talking about being intimidated and impeded from entering the graveyard.

That situation looks very bad for people coming all over the country to the crematorium. The bad publicity Shannon is receiving from

the gun shots, the people of Shannon don't deserve that, the people of Shannon are law abiding people and they don't deserve that".

Incidents in Illaunmanagh were described as "appalling" by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND).

He acknowledged the work of An Garda Síochána and Clare County Council to attempt to tackle "absolutely disgraceful behaviour".

He stated, "Illegal encampments are something successive Governmentts have run away from".

Shannon resembled "The Wild West" in the past week, Cllr Flynn remarked but with the difference of the activity occurring in a residential area surrounded by recreational facilities. "This is a national issue that the Government have run away from".

Speaking at Tuesday's meeting of the Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) re-

vealed she issued a request to the persons on the illegal encampment during the week to move. "It was a waste of time but I felt I had to approach them". She felt "the lack of information" was not helping the situation and called for the matter

SHANNON residents have been on edge following recent incidents in the town, writes Páraic McMahon.

Tensions have been escalating in the past fortnight between two families, one of which has set up an illegal encampment at Illaunamanagh.

Between the hours of 10:45 and 11:15 on Wednesday morning last, there was a shooting incident where no persons were injured with no damage to any property. An Garda Síochána later retrieved the firearm in question on Saturday which is under examination at the Forensic Science Laboratory. A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested in Shannon on Friday, while a second man, in his late teens, was arrested in the Ennis area on Saturday morning.

A file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions on the incidents while The Clare Echo has also learned that a

number of cars have been seized for failing to have tax or NCTs. One Shannon business person told The Clare Echo that they are quite "nervous" with the goings-on in the town. The presence of the encampment on approach to Shannon Crematorium and Illaunamanagh Graveyard has resulted in funerals "lacking dignity", the business person stated while adding to feelings of "fear and intimidation" of pedestians using the Loop Walk.

Residents should no longer feel intimidated, Sergeant Seamus Mulligan told The Clare Echo.

"I would be very happy that all the volatility is gone out of the situation. Arrests have been made, a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, a firearm has been seized so there is no firearm down there. I would hope if there was two sides to it that maybe

a lot of common sense has entered it and a lot of them aren't around anymore. Calm has come for the time being and we will continue to do what we can to make sure the calm stays there".

In order to quell the unease of some visitors to the graveyard and crematorium, a Garda presence is visible every morning on the approach to give persons visiting the memorials of their loves ones greater confidence.

"A lot of people have said they feel intimidated to go to the Graveyard, I would say it is perfectly safe to go to the Graveyard, people shouldn't be intimidated," Sergeant Mulligan explained.

He felt the presence of Gardaí was not necessary. "It is very important that people try keep their routines in the situation we find ourselves in. It is a residential area and it is in

to be resolved quickly.

"It is the last thing that one would want for a family who are going to a funeral to meet this situation," Cathaoirleach of the Shannon MD, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) said of the encampment.

Cllr Michael Begley (IND) urged the local authority and Gardaí to quickly resolve the matter in what he labelled as "a disgrace".

A large number of complaints had been received into the public counter by Shannon MD staff, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett confirmed.

He has spoken with persons on the site while also liaising with the housing department and An Garda Síochána. The environment section of the local authority is also engaged in the multi-agency approach. "We are constrained in what we can say," he admitted.

At the time of going to print on Wednesday evening, The Clare Echo has learned that the encampment is in the process of being moved. Three caravans departed on Wednesday afternoon with the remainder expected to exit on Thursday.

Shannon residents remain on edge as Gardaí say feud is no longer volatile walking distance for a lot of people, there is a Loop Walk down there too which is a great amenity for the town and I would encourage people to use that and the walks as much as possible. We will continue to have a small presence down there in the mornings for people who may feel intimidated by the presence of an illegal encampment. There is no evidence of intimidation or that anyone needs to fear".

Gardaí are making every effort to make the town as safe as it can be, Sergeant Mulligan said. "Everyone's perception of it is different, I don't know is there any ingredients of intimidation there, people just feel that way, it is not like they are being intimidated. There has been a lot of ongoings in the past week which have calmed down".

Comments from elected representatives that scenes in Shannon resembled "the Wild West" were described as "flippant" by Sergeant Mulligan.

"People are maybe looking to get impact from comments. We would be looking for a bit of common sense. Over a long period of time, illegal encampments do come and they do go, people aren't happy when they come but people in the encampments do have to camp somewhere for a period of time.

We hope a solution to their housing difficulty will be found sometime and that an illegal encampment won't be an issue".

St Senans RFC left with ‘massive bill’ after damage to grounds

REPEATED damage to the grounds of St Senans Rugby Football Club (RFC) in Shannon over the past week has left a “massive bill”, writes Páraic McMahon.

On Wednesday last, a firearm was released in the vicinity of the club's grounds. While that incident caused no damage to any property or injured no persons, the rugby club has experienced repeated instances of property damage, incidents which have been reported to Shannon Garda Station.

Public relations officer of St Senans RFC, Robbie Hoban explained, "We've had two large holes cut in our fences, we've had the locks broken with angle grind-

ers three nights in a row as well as the chains we use to secure the gates. We kept replacing them but every night they were being broken so we just gave up. The locking mechanism that sticks to the gate was cut off with an angle grinder.

“The cost of replacing fencing is massive, we will have to replace a whole section of it. We have no fundraising going on at the minute because of COVID so these things are just a killer for us".

The damage to the fencing is expected to cost a few thousand euro. "All this money has to be raised and people have to give this money to the club because we are an amateur organisation. We

have good sponsors but again that sponsorship money is always earmarked for jerseys, flags, upkeep of the field, payment of ESB and gas bills, to have to pay for something that shouldn't have even happened is like someone robbing your house, we don't have insurance for that kind of thing," Hoban stated.

Weekly meetings of the club committee are being held on Zoom. "Everyone gives up their own free time to do this and nobody gets anything out of it only for the love of the club like any sport.

Fundraising in a normal time is hard enough because all clubs are hitting the same people. To have

these unnecessary costs at the moment is really demoralising".

As a result of the damage, the access to the public to Jimmy Slattery Park poses an insurance risk, no persons would be insured when the grounds are locked but the compromising position has left the club "in limbo". Robbie added, "At the moment our gates are open, our fences are open, there was someone witnessed going to the toilet in the middle of our field on Monday, that stuff isn't on".

He acknowledged that the Gardaí had their hands tied in what they could do but was adamant responsibility needed to be taken for recent events.

S PRESIDENT Joe Biden is expected to make a stopover at Shannon Airport in June while a Clare link will form part of his administration.

President Biden is to attend the G7 Summit in Cornwall on June 11th. Sources close to the US President have said he will stopover at Shannon Airport to refuel as part of this trip.

Calls have also been issued for Biden who has strong family links to Mayo and Louth to fly into Shannon Airport when his first official State visit is held. Since John F. Kennedy in 1963, every President of the United States of America has flown into Shannon Airport.

Polly Trottenberg has been announced as one of five women to be nominated as deputy secretaries in the Biden administration.

Almost two months after resigning as New York City's transportation commission, she received a nomination to become deputy secretary of the Transportation Department, she previously served as an assistant secretary for transportation policy and under secretary for

policy in the Obama administration.

Her sister Jan Godfrey has lived in Liscannor with her husband Paul since 1996 while Polly has been a frequent visitor to Co Clare over those 24 years.

Biden was formally sworn in as the 46th US President on Wednesday. In advance of the inauguration, he and his Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) shared their aim to showcase a diverse America which herald

Army deployed to Cahercalla in response to Covid outbreak PÁRAIC MCMAHON

ANAGEMENT at Cahercalla Community Hospital are currently on COVID leave as the health care facility responds to an outbreak of the virus which has required the deployment of the Defence Forces.

Currently, there are 19 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on-site at Cahercalla Community Hospital and Hospice. A clinical oversight team has been put in place by the HSE to respond to the outbreak with all members of the management staff at Cahercalla currently on COVID leave.

Assistance is currently being provided at Cahercalla by 14 army soldiers, a spokesperson for the Defence Force has said. They are currently assisting nursing home staff with non-clinical general duties such as stocking wards with personal protective equipment (PPE), waste disposal, maintenance and the preparation of a vaccination area on-site.

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces told The Clare Echo, "Óglaigh na hÉireann have deployed over 25 soldiers to nursing

homes in Ballincollig and Douglas in Co. Cork and Ennis in Co. Clare.

There are 14 personnel currently working in Ennis. These soldiers, based in Collins Barracks Cork, will be deployed daily over the coming weeks to assist nursing home staff with non-clinical general duties".

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Chairperson of the Cahercalla Board, Dr Michael Harty confirmed a clinical oversight team had been established this week. Staff were informed of their arrival via a memo on Tuesday night. He outlined that the facility was responding to the outbreak of 19 COVID-19 cases.

He said they were working closely with HIQA, the HSE, a dedicated COVID response team and other agencies to manage the outbreak.

Roll out of the COVID-19 vaccine at Cahercalla has been brought forward, Dr Harty highlighted.

Residents and staff that are COVID free began receiving the jab on Monday (January 18th) four days earlier than planned, an estimated 200 vaccines were administered on Monday and Tuesday.

Harty told The Clare Echo that there are "huge pressures" on staffing. Contact has been made with nursing agencies and the HSE to assign additional personnel to Cahercalla, approximately 16 extra nursing staff have been allocated to the Ennis community hospital within

the past week. "We're managing but this is a struggle," he admitted.

Staff have also been asked to work extra hours while public health officials have been consulted to determine if a derogation could be made to allow some nurses return. "Historical" vacancies to fill the roles of General Manager and Assistant Director of Nursing at Cahercalla which have not been filled since the end of November, Dr Harty expressed the hope that this posts would be filled "as soon as possible".

"We appreciate this is a difficult and concerning time for all staff, families, relatives and friends of residents. The Hospital has already informed families of the current situation and again we want to assure them that we are doing all in

our power to protect and care for their loved ones.

“The management and staff are grateful for the encouragement and support we continue to receive from the families and friends of our residents. We thank them for their patience and support. Protecting their loved ones is our number one priority at Cahercalla," he stated.

An online video from women's group Mná Ag Gaire which has since been removed claimed that Cahercalla was in "dire straits" and said management walked out during the week. The video also stated that 40 cases of the virus had been diagnosed at the community hospital and that there was a shortage food for some staff. Dr Harty said the contents of the video were "incorrect and unfounded". He de-

Ann and Mary Sherlock tale among ‘most heart-breaking’ THE story of an Ennistymon mother and the death of her daughter has been described as one of the most heartbreaking stories to emerge from the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation, writes Páraic McMahon.

An inquest into the death of baby Mary Sherlock was held in April 1926. A full report was carried in The Saturday Record where one witness gave evidence that she was an 'inmate' of the nursery and that she saw Annie Sherlock take the baby into her bed at about 5.30 in the morning. She said that later than morning when Annie got up, her baby did not move and she called out that Mary was dead.

Another witness, a nurse, said that as the place was not properly heated in winter, the mothers took the babies into the bed with them. Dr Counihan examined the baby and said that he found 'no bruises or marks of violence' and that the body was well nourished. He concluded that she died from smothering or asphyxia but he could not say how it happened.

The jury found that the child died

from asphyxia and they 'attached no blame to anybody'. The investigating Garda Superintendent, William Geary felt otherwise and stated that the 'verdict may be all right but it would not do the state. I will have Annie Sherlock arrested and formally charged before the district justice'.

A second report in the same newspaper that at a special court sitting held at Kilrush Barracks, Annie Sherlock was charged with "the murder of her illegitimate child aged 7 weeks at the Co Nursery, Kilrush were she had been an inmate and remanded in custody to the District Court at Kilrush".

No further references to the case appeared in newspapers after this but Annie was listed as an employee at the Kilrush nursery in March 1927.

Rita McCarthy who contributed to the chapter on the County Clare Nursery recalls one of her most moving findings she came across during her research.

“When I came across the story of Annie and Mary Sherlock in the Saturday Record from March 1926, I was horrified. On a cold morning

in March 1926, Annie Sherlock took her baby Mary into her bed to feed her and keep her warm. Tragically, they both fell asleep and when Annie woke later that morning, she was heard screaming that Mary was dead.

At the inquest Dr Counihan found Mary died from asphyxiation and that she was well nourished.

“The inquest found that there was no blame in the case but this did not satisfy Superintendent Geary who was stationed in Kilrush and represented the state, he insisted that Annie be charged with Mary’s murder and she was brought to Kilrush Garda Station later that day and charged.

I did not find any record of the case going to court. Mary’s only crime had been to love her child and try and keep her warm on that cold morning and the evidence was given at the inquest to that effect. I found Mary’s baptismal record some time after I had read that story and I have to say I was moved to tears. I lit a candle for them both. They suffered at the hands of a state that lacked humanity or compassion”.

Clare TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) said the HSE were working to get the facility to full capacity, he expressed his confidence that "things are good" and encouraged concerned families to contact management. "There has been no walkout of management as has been suggested, that is totally inaccurate," he stated and added, "The situation in Cahercalla is no different to any other healthcare environment right now".

Mayor of Clare, Cllr Mary Howard (FG) outlined that Cahercalla was "COVID free" up until New Year's Eve. She said that Cahercalla was without 30 members of staff due to the outbreak. Of the assistance from the Defence Forces, the Ennis woman commented, "This is not Washington, this is not the Capitol, there are five lads outside, I believe they came from Sarsfields Barracks, I think they came from Limerick and they are basically there to help moving furniture because the porter staff are out and also to help set up the vaccination stations".

Council pressed to make official apology CLARE County Council have been pressed to make an official apology for their role in financing the Mother and Baby Home in Kilrush, writes Páraic McMahon.

Located in Kilrush, the County Clare Nursery Home was the only registered Mother and Baby Home in Clare.

It was owned and financed

by Clare County Council, 168 children died at the institution over the course of a decade.

Prior to the publication of an article on the subject last week, The Clare Echo contacted Clare County Council to query if it would make an apology for its ownership of the home. "We are reviewing the report of the Commission of Investigation and will issue a statement in due course," a spokesperson said.

An apology needs to be issued by the local authority, Cllr Shane Talty (FF)

(inset) stated at Tuesday's meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, a view which was endorsed by fellow councillors. "It leaves you speechless but it is incumbent on us to respond in the proper manner without delay," Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) commented.

Kilrush representative, Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) admitted he struggled to comprehend as a father how the men of that time abandoned so many women and children, "it is shocking to the core that this happened".

A memorial will be erected by the Council, acting senior executive officer John O'Malley confirmed. Director of Service, Leonard Cleary added, "We cannot hide from shameful truths on how we fell short as a country in our treatment of the vulnerable women and children. It is particularly painful that it happened in our own Municipal District.

‘Stay home stay safe’ not the same for domestic abuse victims PÁRAIC MCMAHON

TAYING at home does not mean staying safe for domestic abuse sufferers, a Shannon elected representative has warned.

A recent report published by Safe Ireland revealed that nearly 3,500 women contacted a domestic violence service for the first time between March and August of 2020.

Safe Ireland detailed that at least 1,970 women and 411 children received support from a domestic violence service in that period. The report shows that 575 women and 98 children who had never as far as is known, contacted a domestic violence service before, contacted services every month in that time.

An average of 184 calls a day were answered by helplines. In 2018, domestic violence services responded to an average of 147 calls a day.

The rate of increase in calls during COVID-19 stands at 25 percent.

191 women and 288 children on average were staying in domestic violence accommodation (refuge, safe homes and supported housing) each month, the report flagged. 1,351 requests for refuge could not be met as there

was no space.

An appeal for Clare County Council to urge the Irish Government to resource and fund the HSE, An Garda Síochána, refuges plus support for counselling services and charities formed a joint motion from Cllr Mary Howard (FG), Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF), Cllr Susan Crawford (GP) and Cllr Alan O'Callaghan (FF).

In reference to the report, their proposal stressed that the prevalence and patterns of domestic violence had been "exacerbated by a pandemic that has locked women and families down with their abuser". It continued, "The government consistently name checks domestic violence and sexual violence as a priority concern, but calling something a priority means that it also has to be resourced and funded as a priority".

Speaking at the January meeting of Clare County Council, Cllr Howard described the findings of the report as "scary reading considering what has been going on in the country behind closed doors for a long period of time". She felt the statistics were "upsetting and heartbreaking".

Cllr McGettigan felt the figures from the report were "stark". The Shannon representative said, "These people need services. The message of stay safe stay home does not mean that to them, it might mean it to us but not to them".

Student numbers to double at Toonagh crèche CIAN O’BROIN

TEACH Spraoi Nature Kindergarten has received planning permission which has allowed the facility to cater for up to 20 children, revising original plans that permitted a maximum of 10.

Changes to the Toonagh facility are only relating to documentation rather than structure. Located on

a site of over an acre, the preschool is surrounded by a wooded area, where children spend most of the day planting, gardening and learning about the animals.

A gradual increase in numbers attending the pre-school have been experienced in recent years with children turned away as maximum capacity had been reached.

"We are blessed to have a wild natural space here.

Established ten years ago, Nora likened most facilities at the time to prisons, and has been adamant about keeping a small student to teacher ratio.

"Small children need that one to one. We never aim to pack them high here.

You just can't do that to children. Putting anyone, whether young or old into big institutional settings just doesn't work. You have to think outside the box."

Having reopened on January 4th, Teach Spraoi is mainly catering for children with special needs and those of essential workers. A WhatsApp group has been setup to incorporate other children that are at home with parents due to a recent surge in Covid-19 cases since the festive season.

aily figures of COVID-19 cases may be dropping at present but the Clare public cannot afford to let down its guard.

Clare's 14 day incidence rate per 100k of the population reached a newhigh of 1621.8 on Friday last but has reported a drop as the days have passed. Within the past fortnight, Clare has recorded more than 1,500 new cases of COVID-19, the amount of which of these are being announced per day has also decreased.

Despite initial positive trends, the level of

infection remains high in the Mid-West. As of January 19, according to Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting [CIDR] data, there have been 170 deaths associated with COVID-19 in the MidWest region since March 2020.

Approximately 50% of these deaths were in long-term care facilities and nursing homes.

Outbreaks are currently being managed and investigated in nursing homes, long-term care facilities and workplaces in the Mid-West.

Fundraiser launched to help Bernard and Daisy bounce back A COMMUNITY fundraiser has been launched to help a Clarecastle man get back on his feet following a recent accident, writes Páraic McMahon.

As covered extensively by The Clare Echo, ex Fianna Fáil councillor Bernard Hanrahan was lucky to survive a fire that burnt down his home on December 27th.

His bichon frise, Daisy woke him from his sleep and the pair managed to exit the household safely but all the contents from the house that was home for the Hanrahans for three generations went up in smoke.

Since then, Bernard and Daisy have been staying with is daughter Rhona.

Bernard's friend Seamus O'Sullivan has now set up

a GoFundMe page to help both Bernard and Daisy "rebuild their lives".

The appeal was formed after several individuals expressed a desire to help do what they can to make life easier for the popular Clarecastle man.

Seamus stated, "While Insurance will go some way towards replacing the physical infrastructure a lifetime of memories and mementos have been lost in the flames". He added, "This appeal will allow all his friends to rally round and show solidarity with a very generous community man".

An "inevitable shortfall" is expected when it comes to the insurance, the Chairman of the Fianna Fáil Ennis Comhairle Ceanntair said.

Miltown Malbay native Hillery dies following short illness A CLARE native who served as a TD and Senator has died, writes Páraic McMahon.

Dr Brian Hillery died on Tuesday after a short illness aged 83. A relation of the former President of Ireland, Patrick Hillery, Brian was a native of Miltown Malbay.

He served as a Senator from 1977 to 1982, 1983 to 1989 and 1992 to 1997 and as a Fianna Fáil TD for the Dún Laoghaire constituency from 1989 to 1992. From 1974 until 1988, Dr Hillery was Professor of Industrial Relations at UCD. Following on from a career in politics and academia, Brian was appointed as Ireland and Denmark's representative on the board of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) from 1994 to 1997.

He was also a director of the Central Bank of Ireland and a member of the National Pensions Reserve Fund Commission and chairman of Providence Resources.

Hillery was also a board member for several private sector businesses.

Eight week waiting list for standard dentist appointment CIAN O’BROIN

LARE dentists are reporting a backlog of at least eight weeks for customers looking to make a standard appointment with clinics under constant duress.

Most practices are currently open for urgent and emergency care only while a number of appointments have been deferred due to rising COVID-19 cases throughout the month of January.

Customers are currently being turned away for cleaning and other standard appointments, Liam Jones of Jones Dental Surgery in Kilrush outlined. On Tuesday of this week, 99 per cent of their clientele they treated were for either pain or infection.

"We would like to be doing an awful lot more. Dental surgeries

are a high-risk premises, so we don't want to be dragging people in.

“However, infection control is our bread and butter. We are hy-

per careful with cleaning. I had only one person today who wasn't in pain and that appointment was made over a year ago," Liam told The Clare Echo.

Scariff’s Archbishop Nugent appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Kuwait and Qatar A SCARIFF native has been appointed as Apostolic Nuncio to Kuwait and Qatar by Pope Francis (inset left), writes Páraic McMahon.

Archbishop Eugene M. Nugent (inset right) will be travelling from the Caribbean to the Middle East to take up the role as Apostolic Nuncio to Kuwait and Qatar.

Subsequently he will leave his current post in Haiti in the middle of February which he has held since January 2015 working there in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2010.

Born on 21st October 1958, Eugene attended Clonusker National School, Scariff Community College and studied for the priesthood in St. Patrick's College, Maynooth.

A graduate in Celtic Studies from NUI Maynooth and subsequently in theology and canon law at the Gregorian University in Rome, Archbishop Nugent also studied diplomacy and international relations at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome.

At the age of 24, he was ordained a priest. He spent three years as a curate in Ennis from 1984 to 1987.

From 1988 to 1991, Nugent worked in Rome in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.

To prepare for a career in the diplomatic service, he entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1991.

He earned his doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1992.

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July

1992. His first assignments were in Turkey, Jerusalem, and the Philippines.

From 2001 to 2010, Nugent headed the Holy See Study Mission in Hong Kong, during this time he had responsibility for communications between the Chinese dioceses and the Vatican.

In February of 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar, Apostolic Delegate to the Comoros, and Titular Archbishop of Dunshaughlin, County Meath, Ireland. A month later, he was named Apostolic Delegate to Mauritius and Seychelles as well.

Eamon was consecrated a bishop in Rome on 18 March 2010 by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

As his episcopal motto he chose "Quodcumque dixerit facite" (Do whatever he says), taken from the Gospel of St John.

On his upcoming role, Archbishop Nugent admitted that he isn't overly familiar with the countries Kuwait and Qatar but this is a pattern that has is common to the Clare man.

"I look forward to this new assignment, it is a sign that the Holy Father has confidence in me but also the importance that he placed on dialogue with the world of Islam. I hope the experience gained in my previous assignments will help me in this new mission," he stated.

He admitted that dentists are finding the current restrictions stressful and that the shortage of dentists and the unavailability of appointments has been a serious cause for concern. "Between the bleach and plastic as well as the slower turnaround time of 30 minutes between patients, I can't see any relief to it in the near term".

Old Mill Dental in Sixmilebridge stated that it is catering for emergency services only including broken teeth, pain, abscesses, wisdom teeth pain and fractured teeth.

General check-ups and cleaning have all been postponed until at least March, dental nurse Hilary Ryan confirmed. Many practices are working longer hours to cater for emergency appointments, she added.

A spokesperson for Ennis Dental Surgery cited the use of an emergency list and admitted that the practice is facilitating all that they can but are still finding it difficult.

"We have patients as far as Galway,

Kilkee and Loop Head. To accommodate everyone, we are having to come in earlier and work during our lunch breaks. We have allotted 9am to 4pm to cater for these emergencies. Many of us have children too and face challenges with home-schooling," she stated.

Ennis Dental Surgery are operating between two surgeries as part of a strict hygiene protocol.

Staff are split into team A and team B. Team A work Monday and Tuesday, whilst team B would occupy the premises on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Every second week, Team A and B would rotate these set working days. The weekend is then spent cleaning and sanitising the surgery.

Sufficient supply of PPE will keep dentist practices prepared for the next couple of weeks while the memory of months gone by left waiting for supply and almost running out is recalled in Ennis which prompted a twelve week closure of the Ennis Dental Surgery.

Gallagher to succeed Sexton as advisor to Minister for Health A KILKISHEN man is to replace a Mullagh woman as special advisor to the Minister for Health, writes Páraic McMahon.

The Clare Echo understands that Colette Sexton has stepped down from her role as a special advisor to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly (FF).

A former journalist with The Sunday Business Post, Colette had been working as a special advisor since August.

Prior to this, she had worked as an associate director with the public affairs division of Edelman and as a political correspondent with The Times Ireland.

News of her upcoming departure became known at the weekend and Sexton is to leave the post in the coming weeks.

N A bid to create a stronger identity for Shannon Town, plans are being put in place to develop a series of Christmas events for 2021.

Shannon Town Park has been earmarked as the most suitable location for helping to foster this sense of community spirit in the town.

An appeal for an official Christmas tree and turning on of the lights event to be organised by Clare County Council was tabled

by Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) at Tuesday's meeting of the Shannon

Municipal District.

She asked that this begin in December 2021 and continue for every year thereafter. "I feel that it is something that is needed in the park for the people to take ownership of the park and something like this will help create a sense of that ownership. Having watched the video on YouTube of carols and Santa in the park bandstand, I have to commend those that with short notice created this for those to watch at home and abroad and felt it would be good for community spirit to continue this," she stated.

Provided the support is forthcoming from the people of Shannon, it is intended to build on the success of the carolling event and the installation of seasonal lighting at the park, senior executive engi-

neer Tom Mellett confirmed. "The Shannon Town Masterplan will be delivered during 2021 and it is anticipated that it will further inform how we can strengthen the sense of place in Shannon Town".

Family members all around the world watched the events from the Town Park on YouTube, Cllr McGettigan outlined. "It was great to see positive stories coming out from the Park because it has had its negatives. We need something positive every year and we need to take ownership. SkyCourt is privately owned, the Town Park is for the people and it should be the location for Christmas lights".

Recalling his time on Shannon Town Council, Cllr Gerry Flynn paid tribute to the individuals on the body and Clare County Coun-

cil for putting a green infrastructure plan together which included the Town Park. "I hope we can de-

velop a partnership with the new Town Centre owners. We do need the identity," he added.

'Decrepit state' of Shannon public lighting not befitting of 'pioneers that developed town'

lPROBLEMATIC: Lighting at Purcell Park needs to be upgraded

QUOTATIONS to fix "problematic" lighting at five housing estates in Shannon will be carried out, writes PĂĄraic McMahon.

Improvements to the public lights in Purcell Park, O'Brien Park, Delacey Park, Collins Park and Gort Rd in Shannon were requested by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) at Tuesday's meeting of the Shannon Municipal District.

An upgrade to LED lighting was suggested by the Shannon representative along with a check of the wiring system which he was informed was "compromised". He described the public lights in the housing estates as "very old and problematic".

After consulting with colleagues in the Transportation Department of Clare County Council, senior executive engi-

neer Tom Mellett confirmed that a quotation would be sought from their maintenance contractor to cover the works.

"Once this is received, we will be in a position to identify appropriate funding.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Flynn lamented that the lighting was in a "decrepit state". He was frustrated at an apparent gulf between the infrastructure in Shannon and Ennis. "The people of Shannon who are the pioneers that developed Shannon over many years are entitled to public lighting. We see that Ennis seems to be that much ahead of us, they have 2040 visions and a powerful Executive driving the ship, we need to be mindful of that in Shannon".

All five areas were left without lights for a brief period recently, Cllr Donna

McGettigan (SF) pointed out. She outlined that such were the conditions she could have bumped into the proposer of the motion and wouldn't have noticed "because it was so dark".

Upgrades to the public lighting in the Shannon Industrial Estate were cited

by Cllr Pat O'Gorman (FF). "The new lighting put in would pay for itself over time with the output of electricity. The funding could be found and in time the lights would pay for themselves," he said.

A cost and energy saving element does exist when it comes to LED lights, Mellett agreed. "They have a long life, there is an environmental and economic impact from switching over. There is a plan for all of Clare to switch over to LED," he detailed.

Conlan not offended by ‘leprechaun’ remarks following Guardiola interview PÁRAIC MCMAHON

WEST Clare sports reporter has said he doesn't take offence to remarks passed about his accent following an exchange with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (inset).

Ballynacally native Jim Conlan was the subject of plenty of online commentary following a press conference with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Tuesday in the aftermath of their 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Considered as one of the greatest managers of his generation, Guardiola has not been shy when it comes to his criticism of the media, particularly those covering the Premier League. On three occasions, he led Barcelona to La Liga glory and likewise for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, in his five seasons with Manchester City he has guided them to two Premier League titles. He criticised the English media last year who he felt were cheering on Liverpool to win the League.

Tuesday was not Pep's first interaction with Conlan. When the former Clare minor gaelic

football selector questioned the Spaniard on whether he planned to make further addition in the January Transfer window, he was given a one word reply “no”..

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Jim admitted that he wasn't overly surprised to receive such a short response to his lengthy forty word question albeit he would have preferred to receive more detail. "I thought he might elaborate if he wasn't going to dip into the market that he would have stated that he had full confidence in his current squad and the options at his disposal.

“He sounded like a guy who knew that the options he wanted was not available to bring in the door in this transfer window so for him it was quite simple to give a ‘No’ response.

“As for him elaborating further I'd say he wasn't interested when he knew the players he wanted were not available".

As a result of the pandemic, press conferences for Premier League managers are held remotely. Ordinarily it is not where you would find a reporter for Raidió Corca Baiscinn, the West Clare community radio station putting questions to some of the highest paid managers in sport.

ers such as Jurgen Klopp, Carlo Ancelotti, Frank Lampard, Marcelo Biesla, Graham Potter and Nuno Espírito Santo.

On how he ended up on the Zoom conferences, Jim said, "I have my own contacts network built up within the sports media throughout the years as a freelance journalist whom I have worked with in the past outside of my operating role on the RCB sport team".

His question to Guardiola on Tuesday morning was shared on the Instagram page of Sky Sports which has over 6 million followers. Comments poking fun at Jim's accent have been made with some calling him an "Irish culchie" and "the most Irish sounding reporter ever" while a previous interview with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta saw one comment on YouTube read "who is this Irish leprechaun masquerading as a journalist".

Like many individuals in the profession, Jim has learned to pay little attention to negative comments that can emerge from the public.

"I suppose English fans expect to hear English journalists at press conferences so it doesn't surprise me. It would be a bit like an English soccer journalist interviewing Kerry manager Peter Keane but soccer is a global game and it extends beyond England".

He added, "I saw a few posts saying that I had Cork accent which I found more offensive".

glór announces recipients of Clare Artists Mentoring scheme STUART HOLLY

WHILST glór’s doors may be closed, the venue has been working behind the scenes to support artists in Clare to plan and develop their practice.

In December glór announced a new initiative to support local artists during this challenging time of the pandemic. Artists were asked to nominate a mentor with whom they would like to work in one-toone sessions between the mentor and the mentee.

The artists selected come from

a variety of genres including painting, photography, traditional music and dance, music, songwriting, film, and theatre.

The number and quality of applications demonstrated a keenness on the part of Clare artists to continue to be ambitious despite the current very challenging circumstances.

Initially glór had planned on supporting five pairs of artists, however given the quality of applications, the venue has adjusted the initiative to support 10 pairs of artists in this round.

Artists selected for the spring sessions are performance artists Ciana Campbell with Diarmuid de Faoite; Fiona O'Connell

with Síomha; John Lillis with Mick Flannery; Nell Hensey with Mark O'Halloran; Síomha with poet Ciara Ní É; Stephanie Keane with Lisa McLoughlin and Therese McInerney with Tara Breen. Visual Arts recipients are Ciara Callinan with Ruby Wallis; Kaye Maahs with Una Sealy RHA and Nathalie El Baba with Michelle Browne.

Each pair of artists will undertake three sessions together before the end of March, with a particular focus to upskill, develop and expand, and all artists will be paid for their time. glór aims to offer another round of the mentoring for further artists later in spring.

This initiative has been supported by The Arts Council.

Farming needs to be developed as a career path for young people to add a vibrancy and energy to the industry, farming columnist Joe Melody opines.

“I

would do this for free�. Over the years since I stayed at home I have often said this to my friends and family about my career as a farmer. Granted there have been days when I have also said “there must be easier ways to make a living�.

All in all there is nothing I’d rather be than a farmer and mostly there is nowhere I’d rather be than on my farm. I always knew that’s what I wanted to be from a young age and was lucky enough that my path to being a farmer was clear and straight.

From my experience though this is not always the case, beneficiaries of large farms are not always interested in a life on the land and on the other hand those who would love the opportunity to farm full time often don’t have the access to land or capital to begin their journey as a farmer.

It’s not just a trivial matter, the changing demographic of farming and the barriers to entry that go along with starting as a farmer affect all

of us as consumers.

This is a matter of food security and land use that will have ramifications for society for decades to come.

The average age of a worker in the Tech industry is now 38, an industry that is full of vibrancy and innovation.

Contrast this to the average Irish farmer being 59. It is thought that for an industry to remain energetic and vibrant it’s work force should average 35 years of age. But when those that are farming can’t get out, how can the young come in.

One of the biggest impediments to starting a farm is access to capital. Farming is a very capital intensive business, so you have a young person with enthusiasm to burn but no money to get started. The other end of the scale is the elderly farmer, his farm is his life’s work but has no one interested in taking it over. What I propose has to begin at school level.

Make farming an actual career path for young people of all backgrounds, ethnicities and genders.

Create a farm intern program where there is a reg-

ister of farmers who have no identified successor and are interested in bringing some youthful enthusiasm to their business.

In schools when a student says she or he is interested in farming, they’re often told to consider agricultural science. This while a very fine course does not teach a young person how to become a farmer but rather steers them towards jobs in the industry as a whole.

Worse again, well meaning but ignorant teachers or parents caution that there is no living to be made out of farming and that the student is capable of better than being a farmer. At the level of the parent this often reflects a vicarious need for credentialism to be bestowed upon their child with the attainment of a degree for a career that often times might not bring fulfilment or meaning to their child.

As a society we need to be more broad minded and open to farming as a career and more than that a lifestyle that can bring meaning from working with nature to feed the world.

Politicians don’t understand housing

HERE’S still a large-scale crisis on our hands in this country, and I’m not talking about Covid for a change. No, this is the crisis on which the election campaign a year ago was largely being fought.

A decade under FG led Governments had seen an abandonment of housing to purely market forces, leading to an enormous backlog in the housing lists and a lack of development country wide.

With this came an explosion in homelessness as rents spiralled. The election results bore this out with a lot of disenchanted young people, particularly, and their parents, voting in sheer disbelief and protest at the scale of the problem. Few could blame them. Free marketeers had utterly failed them with a flawed ideology.

We will be feeling the effects of it for years to come too as we scramble to build at a rate higher than demand is growing so that we can reduce the backlog demand. However, that ambition, launched last Summer by housing Minister Darragh O’Brien is now in trouble. As Covid lockdowns take full effect, the construction industry has massively, necessarily slowed down with it.

There are many topics I write about in this column.

With most I do my best to do my research and form an informed opinion. When it comes to housing though, this is literally my day job.

Working in the construction industry for approaching two decades I’ve seen, first-hand, almost every aspect of it, from

working on site to working in consultancies; from overseeing public works projects on behalf of the state, to working with a developer to build entire veritable villages and the first thing I can safely say is that, from talking to politicians of all hues about it, they simple do not understand construction.

Even after all that transpired in the Celtic Tiger years, the global financial crisis and the ensuing inquiries, modern politicians still cannot seem to grasp what sustainable housing policies look like.

In Clare, state-controlled land accounts for 20 hectares on which, the Department of Housing estimates some 306 public housing units could be built. When you consider that, nationally, some 68,700 households were on social housing waiting lists at the end of 2019, this appears just a drop in the ocean.

But that is only the story surrounding social housing.

Some politicians appear to believe that only social housing should be built, but what about those of us who do not qualify for public housing?

Then there’s the issue with some politicians that believe that Councils should build directly, ignoring the fact that the Council has neither the seed capital, nor the manpower for such a venture.

This is further exacerbated by a skills shortage in the sector in which local authorities could not possibly compete with the wages offered by large building firms.However, nothing is stopping the council, or the state, acting like a developer and contracting the work to a building firm.

I wish to protest against the rag tag bunch who turn up on Saturdays in Scariff to demonstrate against the wearing of masks to limit the speed of this dreadful virus that has caused so much suffering and death to members of our community.

These people, including one locally elected representative of Mountshannon Community Council,

should take their stupid ideas and return to their homes in disgrace.

I am angered and appalled by their demonstration and their callous disregard to others in the community in which they live.

At this time when hospitals are being overrun by the sick and dying it is just not acceptable to have this type of demonstration going on.

I would argue that the state should be following the lead of large multinational pension funds and seek to invest in long term lease housing to secure the state’s pension fund into the future. But again, this all focuses on public housing.

The reason rents are so high is that people are stuck renting instead of owning and this is largely due to reduced supply in the private market.

Developers are not idiots, despite what some may want to believe, and will only schedule construction of product if they believe it will sell. With banks for year reticent to give proper mortgage approvals, it didn’t pay for developers to mass produce housing to just sit there.

When political pressure on the banks saw a rise in mortgage approvals, coupled with the Government’s Help-to-Buy scheme, developers reacted by giving the green light to a host of new developments. With shared equity also coming on board as an affordable housing scheme, developers are seeking to up production even more, with the construction industry forecasting a much needed 12% increase in output this year, Covid dependent.

Alas, some still object to this, as seen on Dublin City Council since the 2019 local elections, for purely ideological reasons. In looking at 21 motions on housing PBP, SF and SD objected almost every time, trying to put a block on private development on private lands for purely ideological reasons. Those shouting loudest about the need for more housing need to cop themselves on and allow it to be built.

OMMUNITY led sustinable farm, Moy Hill are hopeful of providing a structured training facility while continuing to drive community farming and the education of sustainable practices.

Established as a farm that provides a direct connection to the community, Founder Fergal Smith believes that Moy Hill can pave the way for the future generation of farmers looking to turn their hand to regenerative farming, allowing them to “understand their potential for great change through a different type of land management.�

Recognising the decline in diverse farms that fail to integrate eco-system services and tether a strong line of trust with the local community, Fergal hopes to provide a structured training facility at Moy Hill that will offer real educational value to younger farmers and allow them to move away from conventional methods and transcend cultural norms. “Diverse farms are what makes you resilient. It’s really important to have different streams of income. If you only have one enterprise, you are very fragile,� he states.

Moy Hill are receiving funding for an on-site training facility and commercial kitchen. The training facility will facilitate weekend courses, 10-day courses and enable younger farmers to get trained up in regenerative practices. Here they will become familiar with the benefits of no chemicals and tree planting.

Fergal comments: “We all want to learn these new ideas but who is teaching them?

This is the irony. We have all the science and all the great papers coming out telling farmers what to do but there is no real education of these systems on the ground. It’s no offence to Teagasc, but they would very much be pushing the more conventional style.

What I am trying to do is get the young, interested farmers of the future to see what a mixed diverse farm looks like.�

He believes regenerative farming is the most progressive, sustainable way to go, describing it as a different type of land management, with minimal conversion costs for farmers. Regenerative farming accommodates more wildlife, a stronger ecosystem, better water quality and looks at regenerating the landscape, he explains. “Each year, the land is regenerated. Organic farming is simply not doing enough. Neither is horticulture. Farmers hold the key, and it is very exciting.�

Moy Hill Farm was started over seven years ago by Fergal, as a community garden.

Growing from a half-acre to 67 acres, Fergal has realised his dream of both getting people involved in community farming and teaching people sustainable practices. Holistic

management training has taken place on site over the last four years. This is a nine-day course that has enabled the farm to become a true learning hub. Farm tours and Q&A sessions are Fergal’s personal favourites and allow interested individuals to understand and later apply the same principles in different areas. “This holistic management gives you a framework to manage your farm and you can watch to see if the land is getting better or worse. A service that they provide is called Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV). We had it done in August and we were the first farm in the country to have this type of monitoring done. Basically, they go to each field on your farm and ask a series of 21 questions on how many insects are there, how many types of seeds are in the grass and they come back every year to re-evaluate. There is no bluffing this verification process. Your farm is either getting better or it’s not. That’s the kind of farming I want to promote and get people involved in.�

Fergal is excited by the prospect that farmers hold the key to the solutions for many of our problems. This training, monitoring and observation is key in helping farmers transcend the complacency of, like everyone

else, being creatures of habit, he opines. His goal is to get farmers to try and observe and see the benefits and that there is no cost or risk involved. Giving the land enough rest will require less input. In providing training, Fergal intends to show farmers how to manage landscapes with integrating trees, having different livestock and cutting out the middleman. “This is the big one. This is where farmers aren’t making the money. If you direct sell your milk or meat, that is such a different thing. If farmers sell directly to the consumer, then they have a better chance of making money. Helping farmers see how to market their produce and how to sell online and create a good website. These are the future things for farmers if they want to make a good living out of it.�

Getting a good customer base is also essential, he explains. Building trust is the most important thing. Showing people around the farm will create a real loyal customer base. “Conventional farmers aren’t used to this. Showing the community that you are looking after the eco-system is crucial and once the community sees that, you’ve got your best customers,� Fergal concludes.

A CLASSIC FOOL OF A DESSERT Kearney Cooks

O THIS week I got things back on track with regards healthy eating. I am an awful fecker for snacking betweeen meals, plus I have a bit of a sweet tooth. So with this in mind I set about creating something that I can make very quickly and munch away on throughout the day.

One of my favourite desserts is the classic fool, a dish rich in double cream and fruits stewed in sugar.

However some fruits are naturally very sweet and would work well without all that sugar, and I would simply replace the cream with Zero fat yoghurt INGREDIENTS • • • •

Step 3 Into a cocktail glass layer your mango puree, a large spoon of your yoghurt (I went with natural, but you can use whatever flavour you like), and then add a layer of diced fruit.

Keep repeating until your glass is full.

Step 4 Horse into it, you deserve it.

This is a very handy recipe and is great for getting you towards your five a day as well.

Mango goes well with lots of fruit such as raspberries and passion fruit so you can easily swap around ingredients to suit your tastes.

With this recipe I can usually make two dessert portion size Martini glasses or four small snack size shooters.

I am going to talk about creating new healthy and positive habits to make you feel better about your days ahead. Everyone is different when it comes to certain things that they want to change or improve on. Here are some things that have helped me create healthy habits and made me have a very positive mindset.

For me, I love to apply my favourite face and hair mask once a week to ensure my skin and hair are getting all the nourishment they need. The face mask I use is the Soulista Beauty Charcoal Detox Sheet Mask and the hair mask I use is the Semi Dilino Alfaparf Reparative Mask.

When I do this I feel so much better about myself. After every shower I love to apply my favourite body oil by L’Occitane. I use this as much as I can as it really gives me that feeling of being in the spa. Knowing that you have given your body the nourishment it deserves can truly make you feel so much better.

SELF CARE: This is something that has become so popular in terms of maintaining your mental health. I want to talk about how important it really is to take care of yourself. This can always start small, like putting on your favourite face mask or

minute meditation afterwards. I know meditation isn’t for everyone, so maybe even a 10 to 20 minute walk in the morning is always a good option. There is absolutely nothing like fresh air to start your day.

All proceeds will assist with funding of Milford Hospice services for now and for the future in Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary. (A Prayer for Help) My heart is broken as I am sure everyone's in Ireland at this present moment and it goes out to the women, young girls and the children and babies who featured in the Mothers and Babies home report.

Hearts Shattered

For all the innocent little lost souls who never stood a chance against the most unimaginable evil in the history of the Irish state, I pray and hope that those little angels are enjoying unconditional kindness, happiness and love in heaven with all the other little angels and that they are in a place that will eternally provide comfort and safety that they were so cruelly deprived of in this so called beautiful country and on this sometimes amazing but often unjust and horrible earth. My thoughts are with their mothers whose spirits and hearts were shattered by the cruelty they and their beautiful little babies and children had to endure at the hands of those who were evil to the core.

I can’t imagine what it has been like for survivors, I hope everyone is doing okay or as well as can be expected in the circumstances and lets hope it truly is a new path of righting a terrible wrong in the history of the Irish state but more importantly in the lives of the mothers and children who had to journey through these awful times.

Ireland’s history of using shame and fear to control women and their bodies is truly horrifying in its scale and impact. State and religious officials and bodies arranged and carried out these crimes. They profited from horrendous cruelty and systemic abuse.

Not the end of the Story

Archbishop Eamon Martin has rightly issued an unreserved apology while the Bon Secours order, which ran the notorious Tuam home, also apologised and admitted they 'did not live up to our Christianity' when running the home.

As It is thanks to historian

Catherine Corless, who uncovered the mass grave of babies in Tuam, that this scandal has been investigated, however, it is disturbing that it stayed hidden and unacknowledged for so long. This apology has been welcomed but this is not the end of the story. It is, as I have already mentioned, important that the survivors of these dreadful places get redress and full disclosure of information.

The response from the government has to be proportionate to the magnitude of the crimes and suffering. As I said we have seen successive governments let survivors down. We saw it with the Cloyne, Murphy, Ryan and McAleese Reports. Learning about the institutional abuse in Ireland over my lifetime has been one of the worst things I’ve ever come to know along with many atrocities where I worked in the developing world in many places in Africa and Asia for the last 28 years.

It's hard to imagine something worse, but governments refusing to give dignity and justice to survivors of that abuse comes close. It cannot be let happen again.

Do we learn from our History

So while we are looking back at what has happened in the past we must also look at this present time and what we are doing about the present situation where children living in our midst are growing up in hotel rooms, are living in direct provision, in halting sites, in various types of homelessness and poverty, in various types of foster care and in various types of detention care centres.

Regardless of their or their families’ status, these children did not choose to not have control over their circumstances. All children deserve to be raised in an atmosphere where care providers offer emotional protection and support.

Moreover, care providers must be able to lead by example through their behaviour, exhibition of values and religious and cultural practices. So please don't let it be the case that the only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.

Thought for the week

As your thought for the week please try and always put into action in your daily living the following prayer poem by Sally Meyers which I pray often called ‘To Our Children’ which probably will mean so much to every parent after seeing what happened to little vulnerable babies and children,

vulnerable young girls and vulnerable women at the hands of evil people in our country over those decades.

ALLYVAUGHAN man Robert Wainwright is planning on shaving his head in solidarity with his partner Gwen Ryan who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Robert is also using the opportunity to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.

Gwen was diagnosed with breast cancer last year after having previously had the condition seven years ago when she was treated with a lumpectomy and radiotherapy. She underwent a mastectomy in October. When Gwen found out she would have to have chemotherapy, she suggested that Robert join her in shaving her head.

The national Breast Cancer

Research Institute is a charity which funds research programmes into breast cancer in NUIG. Breast cancer affects one in nine women in Ireland.

3,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually in Ireland making it one of the most common cancers.

Speaking to The Clare Echo about the importance of the cause Robert Wainwright said, "Research is very important. It's an extremely common cancer which affects a lot of women".

The couple's original target was to raise €1,000 for the charity but they have already surpassed that figure and have received €4,540 worth of donations.

West Clare Mini Marathon goes virtual NEXT weekend, the West Clare Mini-Marathon will take place virtually, writes Cian O'Broin.

Recognised as one of the biggest events in West Clare for the past 23 years, the annual 10k charity event is a stark reminder that cancer is still the biggest killer worldwide, says Committee Chairman Willie McGrath. All funds raised are in aid of the West Clare Cancer Centre.

"Everyone is aware that West Clare is so isolated from all facilities that are needed when someone is diagnosed with cancer. We are a locally based registered charity here in West Clare and there is nobody else to turn to," McGrath detailed.

This year the event will take place virtually, within everyone's respective 5km radius.

Over the past 23 years, the event has raised over €4m in

funding for cancer patients at West Clare Cancer Centre.

Willie remarks that between €180,000 and €200,000 has been raised each year, over the past two or three years and hopes that 2021 will bring the same success. "We have learned from other groups going ahead with fundraisers during Covid," he acknowledged.

Registration for the January 30th and 31st run is taking place online this year, with the fee amounting to a total of €20 to participate. "We ask that people take to the roads within their own 5k radius to complete the 10k and do so under the Covid guidelines. Now that we are gone virtual, we are not limited to just Ireland, so come join in from far and wide. We are really looking forward to it," he states.

You’ll need: The first thing we recommend is to get saving regularly. There is no shortcut here. Even if you get a

parental gift to cover the entirety of the deposit, you’ll still need to prove that you can afford the repayments, so saving and having good financial habits are the best way to do that.

It’s about discipline, but it’s also the best way of boosting your financial health. So, what are the other stages? You need to find a house or apartment that you love. Next, you make an offer which is accepted, and then you go to a stage called ‘sale agreed’. Don’t forget to budget for other costs like valuation fees and surveyor fees.

After this, the estate agent gives all the relevant details to your solicitor. Your solicitor may cost around €2,000-€3,500 depending on the part of the country you are in. Your solicitor will also calculate how much stamp duty is due (1% of the purchase price) and this will need to be paid to Revenue before the closing of the sale.

While you wait for your formal Letter of Offer from EBS you’ll need to start thinking about life assurance and home insurance which our team can help you out with.

Once you receive the letter of offer, your solicitor will sit down with you and go through it in detail to make sure you are comfortable with everything in the contract. Once signed, you’ll then physically hand over your deposit. Your solicitor then sends off the necessary paperwork in a process known as the ‘Exchange of Contracts’ and everything becomes official. Once your solicitor has completed all the necessary legal steps, they will get in touch with your Mortgage Master to arrange the payment of the remaining balance and to close the sale.

Once that’s all completed, you’ll get the keys to your new place! At last!

What you need to know about CSSR and Stay and Spend Credit

HE proposed Covid Restrictions Support Scheme “CRSS” was published in the Finance Bill 2020. It is a targeted support for businesses significantly impacted by restrictions introduced by the Government to control to spread of

Covid-19.

• CRSS will provide support for businesses carrying on a trade from a business premises located in regions subject to restrictions introduced in line with the Living with Covid-19 Plan, with the result that the business is required to prohibit or severely restrict customers from accessing their business premises. Generally, this refers to Covid restrictions at Level 3, 4, or 5 of the Living with Covid-19 Plan but certain businesses may qualify for support where a lower level of restriction is in operation.

• Where a business is either forced to temporarily close or operate at a significantly reduced level because of the restrictions the business may qualify for support.

• To qualify for CRSS, businesses must be able to demonstrate that because of the restrictions, the turnover of the business in the period for which the restrictions are in operation will be no more than 25% of an amount equal to the average weekly turnover of the business in 2019 multiplied by the number of weeks for which a claim is made.

• A qualifying business can claim for a cash payment known as an Advance Credit for Trading Expenses (ACTE) equal to 10% of their average weekly turnover up to €20,000 and 5% thereafter, subject to a maximum weekly payment of €5,000.

• Other qualifying conditions must also be satisfied including:

o The business must have been issued with a tax clearance certificate and complied with any obligations with regard to registering for and accounting for VAT. o The business intents to resume trading once restrictions are lifted. o The business has registered for CRSS on ROS and provided all information required. o The business applies for ACTE on ROS and makes the necessary declarations.

CRSS is running from 13 October 2020 to 31 March 2021. Claims must be submitted within 8 weeks from the date the claim period commences.

Stay and Spend The Stay and Spend Tax Credit is a new tax credit available for the years 2020 and 2021. You can claim the Stay and Spend credit for qualifying expenditure incurred between 1 October 2020 and 30 April 2021. This includes expenditure on either: • holiday accommodation • ’eat in’ food and drink.

The minimum spend is €25 per transaction. You must submit a copy of your receipt with the claim. A ‘qualifying service provider’ must provide the service. Qualifying service providers are those who have registered with Revenue to participate in the scheme. The maximum tax credit available under the scheme is €125 per person. The maximum tax credit available for those under joint assessment is €250.

The tax credit will used to reduce your IT liability. Any

excess credit may then be off set against your liability to USC. You must have an IT or USC liability to offset against the credit to claim same.

PCP and car lending on rise despite pandemic

CP deals are seeing enormous rise in interest despite the global pandemic, with motorists also borrowing more for cars, according to new figures.

Hundreds of millions of euro have been loaned by the financial arm of the biggest seller of vehicles in the country, the Volkswagen group, which accounts for more than a quarter of all new sales here.

Volkswagen Financial Services Ireland (VWFS) is the main lender for vehicles sold by the group here. The group brands include Audi, ŠKODA, SEAT, CUPRA as well as Volkswagen cars and commercials.

According to a report in the Irish Independent, last year it loaned just under €568m. This amounted to more than was loaned in 2019 despite curtailed dealership opening due to pandemic lockdowns.

The report states, “The new figures show that more than three-in-five (63.1pc) of the group’s private customers opted for finance from the VW ‘bank’.

In total, 62.3pc of Volkswagen-branded models, such as Golfs and Tiguans, were funded that way, as were 70.3pc of ŠKODAs, 60.2pc of SEATs, 64.9pc of VW commercials and 52.8pc of Audis.

“The figures also show there was yet another increase in the

popularity of PCPs. A huge 83.8pc of all new-car finance customers from the group took the PCP route (up 5.8pc on 2019). In total 83pc of people paying for a Volkswagen model opted for PCP (up 6pc on 2019).

“That figure rose to 84.7pc for ŠKODA customers (up 4.4pc), a substantial 93.6pc of SEAT deals (up 8.8pc) and 80.1pc of Audi finance customers also opted for PCP (up 5.4pc).”

VWFS managing director Guénaël Geffroy also told the Irish Independent that the lender has sanctioned more than 7,000 payment breaks. “We are supporting as much as we can, on a permanent basis, any potential customer difficulties with a personalised approach if needed.”

VWFS have developed online finance applications and service plans to speed up remote requests for loans. They have also recently launched a new customer portal to help with queries and increased customer service levels.

Both the life cover / mortgage protection and the house insurance may seem to be peripheral to the main show (i.e. the mortgage) but without these in place sales can fall through and with the added pressure of changes in guidelines it is wise to be prepared.

Valuation: Before you draw down your mortgage, the property will need to be independently valued by a professional valuer – you should expect to pay a fee of between €150 and €250 inclusive of VAT, but this can vary.

Stamp Duty: The current rates are 1 per cent of the purchase price up to €1,000,000 and 2 per cent of any value over that.

Insurance/assurance: You will also need life cover and home (buildings) insurance – the costs of these can vary depending on your requirements and circumstances.

020 was a tough year and a year that most will be glad to see the back of. We were fearful of catching a dangerous virus and our lives were impacted massively in one way or another. While this has not gone away, 2021 does bring green shoots of hope with the thought of vaccines and getting back to normal.

Intermittent lockdowns have brought challenges as restrictions were imposed, but some people have managed to use the time to be quite productive. While we may not all have the washboard abs and beach bodies, we told ourselves we would achieve in our extra time at home, there have been opportunities to organise other parts of our lives as well.

Many have made huge progress with getting their financial affairs in line, and with no ease up in lockdown for the a few months yet, there is still time to do this.

As January is a good time to set yourself goals, here are some of the things you should consider addressing regarding financial planning.

1. PROTECTION

If your family relies on your income or your role as a stay-at-home parent, how can you make sure they can cope without you?

Protecting our dependants through insuring against death and illness should be top of our priorities when it comes to financial planning. If you have adequate Life Cover and the worst happens, this sum could help to pay off your mortgage, household bills, education fees, motor expenses and other ongoing living costs – in short, it provides financial support for your family when they need it most.

Often, people have life cover from their employer. This should be factored in when considering how much cover you need to protect your family.

2. PENSION

One of the most common reasons given by those without a pension is not having the time to get around to it. With current lockdown restrictions, there is now no excuse not to seize the day. Given our country’s demographics, it is unlikely that the state pension will remain as high in the long term. Therefore, those who do not have private pension arrangements in place may find that they cannot afford to retire as early as they would like.

Many people also have pension pots from previous employers that they have

no control over and no awareness of their value. Use the time available to you now to track down these policies which you may have left behind when leaving a job. There are many options available to those in these positions and rarely is it a good idea to leave it lying idly where it is. Engage with a financial advisor to help you with this.

3. SAVINGS

US politician Elizabeth Warren popularised the 50/30/20 rule. The basic rule is to divide up after-tax income and allocate it to spend: 50% on needs, 30% on wants, and socking away 20% to savings. Needs include expenses like, mortgage or rent, groceries, insurance and utility bills. Wants refers to dinner and movies out, that new handbag or set of golf irons, tickets to sporting events, vacations and the latest electronic gadgets. Finally, you should aim to save 20% of your income.

It is also important to give your savings a purpose. Ideally, you would have a rainy-day fund saved which you can access at any point. This is recommended to be three times your monthly income. This should be kept in an account which gives you instant access to your funds, like a deposit account with your bank.

When you do not have a need to access savings for 5 or more years, then a deposit account no longer becomes your best option. Many life assurance companies offer good multi-asset investment funds which we can contribute to through a monthly regular savings policy. These funds give us access to investing in the best companies, properties and bonds in the world. They are well diversified and will generally produce better returns than the banks over the long term.

Launched in October

by Ennis Chamber of Commerce, the Clare Gift Card ran in partnership with One4All as a replacement for the Ennis Gold Gift Card and allowed businesses to sell the

vouchers online during COVID-19 restrictions.

With a renewed emphasis on shopping local this year, the goodwill was seen when it came to the demand for the Clare Gift Card.

"We were blown way by how just the support was phenomenal for local businesses this Christmas," CEO of Ennis Chamber Margaret O'Brien told The Clare Echo.

"Whether they were members of this scheme or not we are were hearing great things back from our own membership about just how

great the locals were in supporting them and I think we maybe benefited from that as well. It was a very competitive year for vouchers because there were a lot of newly launched national vouchers on the market, so we were kind of up against it. We didn't have much time for the sell in, it was launched just a month before Christmas and we were delighted it garnered that many sales in what was quite a short time frame," Margaret added.

The Clare Gift Card can be spent in 70 businesses across the coun-

ty of Clare and the large volume of sales it earned will benefit the local economy. "If you were to go in and buy a voucher from a particular business when you go to spend it six months later or after lockdown that money is already in their business it's not new money coming in the door and at least with this gift card this is extra money for whoever receives or redeems that card, it's new money coming into their business which will hopefully give a great boost by the time this lockdown lifts that there's that much

money circulating out there which can be spent hopefully quickly," explained O'Brien.

New date for Paddy CDSL re-establish U19 league Donovan’s sixth bout

NNIS boxer Paddy ‘Real Deal’ Donovan has a new date confirmed for his sixth professional bout, writes Páraic McMahon.

Originally due to fight on January 22nd, Donovan’s latest fight was cancelled as the British Boxing Board of Control suspended all boxing due to rising cases of COVID-19.

In November, Donovan made it five wins from five in professional ranks with an impressive points victory over England’s Jumaane Camero.

Confirmation has now been issued to the 22 year old welterweight and his trainer Andy Lee that they will be in the ring on February 19th.

No opponent has yet been finalised but ‘Real Deal’ Donovan has continued his intensive training programme ahead of the bout.

He will form part of the MTK Fight Night event that will be aired on ESPN in the US and worldwide on IFLT.

IN A bid to try retain Youths players who missed out on games as a result of COVID-19, an U19’s soccer league is to be set up when games resume in Clare.

Clubs have been contacted by Denis Collins who will be elected secretary when the Annual General Meeting of the Clare District Soccer League (CDSL) is held. The idea of setting up an U19 league was put to the clubs by Collins.

As a result, there would be no Youths (U18) league but it is expected that the CDSL will have competitions in place at U17 and U19 level. The Clare Echo understands that between 12 to 14 clubs have already expressed an interest in registering teams for the U19 grade.

AFTER winning his first round heat of the Epic Hero Leger Winner 525 Stake last weekend at Limerick, Bling Bling Paul stepped up another gear on Saturday as he produced another impressive performance to book a spot in next week’s semi finals.

Owned by John Meehan of Newmarket-on-Fergus, Bling Bling Paul is only a May puppy but he is certainly heading the right direction and his latest performance could only be described as flawless.

Quickest into stride wearing the red jacket, Bling Bling Paul showed fine early dash to hold his rails pitch early on and turn a two length leader over Allegra Blue in second.

From here, it was all one way traffic as the son of SH Avatar - Killinan Reina stretched clear and aided by traffic, duly came home a 13 length winner in a time of 28.75.

There was further success for Clare when Buttsys Best got back to winning ways in heat three for the Buttsys-Buckos syndicate of Shannon. Coming into the stake with a big reputation after posting 18.70 over the two bend trip, Buttsys Best had to settle for minor placings on his last outing and

he looked in trouble again on this occasion after a sluggish start from trap six. However, this talented brindle showed early gears to get back into contention and soon took control from Boyhero into the penultimate corner. Staying on strongly thereafter, the son of Ballymac Best - Killeacle Tammy ran out a comfortable, five length winner in a time of 28.95.

Four Clare All Star nominees as Kelly up for hurler of year T ONY Kelly is on the shortlist for Hurler of the Year while he is one of four Clare men nominated for All Stars, writes Páraic McMahon.

Ballyea’s Kelly a winner of the Hurler of the Year award in 2013 is in the running alongside Limerick’s Gearoid Hegarty and Stephen Bennett of Waterford for the PwC GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year.

Across the course of four championship games, he scored 1-53. The fact that Clare were eliminated at the quarter-finals yet Kelly is considered for the accolade demonstrates how impressive his exploits of 2020 were.

He is also included as a nominee for a position on the All Star team at midfield. Limerick duo Cian Lynch and Will O’Donoghue, Waterford’s Jamie Barron, Michael Breen of Tipperary and Kilkenny’s Conor Browne are also nominated in the middle of the park.

Cathal Malone becomes the first Ennistymon man to receive an All Star nomination. The Sixmilebridge hurler is recognised for his consistent hard-working endeavours during

Brian Lohan’s first year in charge. He is the only Clare nominee in the forward-line among 17 other hurlers.

Following a debut senior inter-county season which saw him collect two clean sheets in four games, Feakle’s Eibhear Quilligan is rewarded with an All Star nominee. The LIT graduate is in the reckoning alongside Limerick’s Nickie Quaid and Stephen O’Keeffe from Waterford.

One of the standout performers lining out in front of Quilligan was Rory Hayes. The Shannon man was a regular at corner back for Lohan having been given his championship debut during the Gerry O’Connor and Donal Moloney era. As a result of his display, the Wolfe Tones utility man has been rewarded with an All-Star nomination.

It is the first time that Hayes, Malone and Quilligan have received an All Star nomination.

All-Ireland, Munster and National League winners, Limerick dominate 45 man shortlist with 14 nominees. Beaten All-Ireland and Munster finalists, Waterford are given 10 nominees followed by Galway (7),

Kilkenny (5), Clare (4), Cork (2), Tipperary (2) and Dublin (1).

Kilkenny’s Eoin Cody (Ballyhale Shamrocks), Waterford’s Iarlaith Daly (Lismore) and Tipperary’s Jake Morris (Nenagh Éire Óg) are all nominated for Young Hurler of the Year.

Nominees were chosen by a panel of Gaelic Games correspondents from across, print, radio, TV and digital media, chaired by Uachtarán CLG John Horan. It has also been confirmed that there will be two additional hurling selections – a team of the year for the players in the Joe McDonagh Cup, as well as a Champion 15 that is comprised of star players from across the Christy Ring, Nickey Rackard and Lory Meagher Cups. Details of these teams will be announced next month.

It is intended that the presentation of the PwC All-Star awards will take place late next month in a TV show that will be in line with Covid-19 restrictions and will be confirmed “in due course,” a GAA spokesperson confirmed.

Morey Carr steps down as S&C coach as Galvin bros return confirms

EITH Carr has stepped down as strength and conditioning coach to the Clare senior hurlers after one season while the return of the Galvin brothers has been confirmed by Brian Lohan.

While doubts remain as to when the inter county GAA season will get underway, players are busy following individual training programmes in preparation for the new season.

The GAA is to provide an update on its plans for the season by the end of the month but it is expected that the February 27 start of the Allianz Leagues will be delayed to the end of March.

Clare players are following a strength and conditioning programme under the guidance of Trevor Slattery and Mike Carmody. Carr has stepped down from this role and is replaced

by Slattery, who is well known having worked with a number of club sides including Cratloe, and by Limerick man Carmody who has a background in athletics. Seán Treacy, James Moran

and Ken Ralph continue as part of Lohan’s management team.

Prior to getting involved with the Clare hurlers, Carr was S&C coach to the Galway senior footballers then managed by Kevin Walsh.

Conlon missed out on last season due to a cruciate knee injury while former All Sar Colm Galvin was also forced out of the panel due to injury.

SEADNA Morey has confirmed he will not be part of the Clare senior hurling panel this year, writes Seamus Hayes.

Corner-back on the Clare minor hurling sides managed by Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor that claimed provincial titles in 2010 and 2011, Seadna Morey was rewarded for his exploits with a call-up to the county senior panel in the winter of 2011 by then manager Davy Fitzgerald.

Morey made his senior inter-county debut in 2012 and was sprung from the bench in the 2013 All-Ireland SHC replayed final where he provided a valuable assist for Darach Honan’s goal after winning a turn over in defence and powering past his Cork opponents before offloading possession.

In 2016, he claimed his first and only National Hurling League medal to add to his collection of three Munster and All-Ireland U21 honours. He featured in every minute of the 2020 championship for Brian Lohan’s charges.

Alongside Noel Purcell, he was joint captain of the 2019 Sixmilebridge side that were crowned Clare SHC champions, the UL graduate has a total of five Clare SHC medals.

He told The Clare Echo this week that ongoing injury concerns along with work commitments have led to the decision to withdraw from the county squad. “I hope that this decision will help me to extend my playing career” said Seadna who will continue to be available to his club side.

CONVERSATIONS regarding a Clare GAA commercial officer took place in 2020 but “fell by the wayside,” former Chairperson Joe Cooney has revealed.

County Conventions across the country have heard requests for the appointment of commercial managers with Clare’s annual meeting being no different.

In 2020, Clare GAA had a commercial income of €157,222 compared with €382,933 a year previous. Advertising income was halved while a drop of €67,851 was recorded when it came to match programmes, €154,570 was brought in for ‘other’ in commercial revenue according to Treasurer Michael Gallagher’s report.

Tulla tabled a proposal calling on Clare GAA to examine the feasibility “of ap-

pointing a commercial manager or similar type role to adequately maximise the advertising and marketing possibility potentially available to Clare GAA,” the motion read.

“There is money to be made from the GAA,” Tulla delegate Brian Torpey stated as he referenced the streaming service Clare GAA TV which brought in €39,124 for the County Board during the 2020 club championship. Torpey felt “professional independent help” was required “to maximise the resources” of the organisation.

Speaking at County Convention, Joe Cooney stated that he sat down with an unnamed qualified individual on the subject of commercial management. “The person was willing to help us out” but due to COVID-19 “it fell by the wayside”. “It is something the Executive have in mind for 2021,” the outgoing Chairperson remarked.

CLARE’S underage hurling teams are not matching their football counterparts, an East Clare delegate has stated.

An appeal for Clare GAA to set up an independent body to study “how our underage development squad system is operated” and to report back on necessary improvements “to ensure we are operating at the highest level required,” formed a proposal from Tulla GAA club.

It was requested that the body be established immediately with a report to be concluded no later than June 30, 2021 to allow any recommendations be in place for the 2022 season.

At minor level, Clare have contested Munster Finals in football three times in the last four years, coming up short on each occasion; during this same time-frame the minor

hurlers have lost two provincial deciders. Clare last tasted provincial success at minor level in 2011 for hurling and 1953 for football.

Managed by Brian Coffey, Clare’s U15 hurlers won the Arrabawn hurling tournament in 2018, no equivalent wins have been recorded by the footballers in recent years.

Speaking at the County Convention, Tulla’s Brian Torpey stated that Clare hasn’t “half-enough” the adequate amount of Games Development Officers. “We don’t have a strength and conditioning coach in situ and one needs to be appointed immediately. Physically we are losing out. It is imperative that we have a review”.

A strength and conditioning coach was in place up until the outbreak of COVID-19, outgoing Chairperson Joe

Cooney responded. He told the meeting that he had spoken with the secretary of Tulla GAA club on the motion, their conversation came to the conclusion that Torpey would be willing to help with the review which Cooney welcomed.

Independence was a key aspect of the request, Torpey responded to which Cooney said that conversations with Bord na nÓg and the coaching officer would be essential, “it is important to see how ye would work together”.

Cooney questioned the Tulla official, “can you organise the independent body or bodies” and Brian clarified, “I’m asking Clare GAA to do it”.

An “amount of time” is already being invested by Clare GAA into underage, Cooney flagged.

VAN Talty has been appointed as the new manager of the Clare intermediate ladies football team. A nine time Clare SFC winner with Kilmurry Ibrickane, Talty succeeds his cousin and clubmate James Murrihy.

Both Talty and Conor Shannon of Lisdoonvarna are the sole members of the 2020 management to continue with the team following the exits of Murrihy, Ger Keane, Enda O’Halloran, Martin McMahon and Diarmuid Whelan.

Former S&C coach with the Wexford senior hurlers, Mike Frawley who also hails from the Kilmurry Ibrickane club has joined the set-up along with manager of the UL freshers football side John O’Grady from Oola who will be the side’s main coach. Mark O’Donnell is a new addition as an assistant coach and selector while Peter O’Dwyer (goalkeeper coach) and Sarah Cunningham (female liaison officer) are also on board.

At Tuesday evening’s meeting of the County Board held via Zoom, Talty was ratified to take on the role. From the outset, he has set the target of All-Ire-

land intermediate glory this season.

“I am delighted to be appointed and I am really looking forward to it. The talent in Clare ladies football is phenomenal. I have seen this first-hand over the past 18 months. If all the players in the county make themselves available and the whole Clare Ladies football community row in behind us, no stone will be left unturned in creating an environment where this group of players can achieve their ultimate goal of winning an All-Ireland Intermediate title in 2021,” Evan stated.

Chairperson of the Clare LGFA, Seán Lenihan noted that the elevation of Talty and the retention of Conor Shannon acts as a vital link with the previous management. “We very much wanted to maintain the high level of work that James and his team put in over the past three years and indeed build on it, so we are delighted to have someone of Evan’s calibre and experience and thrilled with the strong backroom team that he has put in place.”

A leading light with the Limerick footballers for over a decade until his inter-county retirement in January 2018, the Dromcollogher-Broadford clubman is a new addition to the management of the Ennis club.

Now a Limerick City based garda, Buckley was stationed for a number of years in Ennistymon.

Paul Madden will continue as manager in what will be his fifth season in the role. The hotelier will be joined by former players Shane Daniels and Peter Cosgrove as selectors while the outgoing Tom Russell and Rory O’Brien will continue as part of the background team. O’Brien was part of the club’s senior championship winning team in 2006.

Outgoing selectors including 2006 Clare SFC winning captain Alan Malone, 1992 Munster SFC winner James Hanrahan and two-time All-Ireland SHC winner Stephen McNamara will not be part of the management this year.

ANAGER of the Dr Harty Cup winning St Flannan’s College side of last season, Kevin O’Grady has been unveiled as the new coach of the Ballyea senior hurlers.

Last month, the return of 2016 Clare SHC and Munster SHC club winning boss, Robbie Hogan to Ballyea was reported by The Clare Echo.

Now he has assembled his management team with O’Grady taking on

the role of coach.

A native of Beagh, O’Grady (pictured) was coach of the Crusheen senior hurlers that contested the 2014 Clare SHC decider. Subsequent to this, he was a coach to the Clare U21 hurlers under Donal Moloney (2015 and 2016) and also John Carmody (2017).

The history teacher was also involved with the Tulla hurlers before guiding St Flannan’s College to Ha r t y Cup

honours in 2020 alongside twotime All Star Brendan Bugler, Mike Kelly and Shane McCarthy.

Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Raymond ‘Reggie’ O’Connor who were selectors during Hogan’s first tenure in charge of the Ballyea seniors return to their rules as does Alan Duggan who will be goalkeeper coach along with the side’s statistician. Jude Quinlivan as selector and strength and conditioning coach Adrian O’Brien complete the management.

Ballyea reached the semi-finals of the 2020 Clare SHC bowing out at the hands of O’Callaghans Mills. As reported by The Clare Echo last week, Donach O’Donnell is returning as manager of the Fireballs for 2021.

A Derry senior football championship winner with Glenullin John Mitchels in 1985, Mark moved to Clare in 1998. He was midfield on the St Josephs Doora/ Barefield side that contested the 2011 Clare SFC decider and was manager of the team a year later that also reached the decider, losing to Kilmurry Ibrickane on both occasions.

Fellow St Josephs clubman Kieran O’Neill will also be involved on the management team, alongside Eddie Killeen and his brother Gerry from the outgoing management team.
