Postcard from beyond the grave A POSTCARD written eighteen years ago by now deceased residents of a house in Castlewood Park has been discovered in the process of renovations by current homeowners, Sarah and John. The message from beyond the grave tells the story of Andy and Kath Mac Donald, as Kath battled her first round of chemotherapy with non-hodgkin’s lymphoma. The postcard, now returned to a daughter living in England, has shocked her and her family, describing it like ‘getting a message from my mum nine years after she died.’ The Clare Echo traces the life of Andy and Kathleen Mac Donald, who worked as the Dog Warden and a registered nurse in the town of Ennis for over thirty years, searching for answers as to what lay ahead for the couple after sealing their postcard behind the fireplace, in the depths of time.

IGHTENED restrictions’ announced by the Government on Tuesday have been met with frustration and anger across the country and in parts of Co Clare. Recommendations from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) which have been approved by Cabinet will see sporting events now held behind closed doors, over 70s are now asked to limit their interactions. Other changes see a maximum of six people from three different households allowed to visit any house. Outdoor gatherings are to be limited to 15 people while a mandatory closing time of 11:30pm
is now in place for pubs operating as restaurants. Gardaí are to be handed extra powers to enforce the regulations. Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn explained that the focus of the recommendations were to limit the congregation and meeting of people, to further enforce current measures and to roll out targeted measures. Criticism has been voiced with both the reasoning and the communications of the new measures. All-Ireland winning Clare captain, Anthony Daly called the decision to hold sporting contests behind closed doors as “a disgrace”. A meeting with Acting CMO has been sought by the GAA to obtain further clarification. Professor Phillip Nolan outlined that the measures were designed to tighten controls and reduce mixing between households to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
