SOLUTION to the shortage of school places for children entering secondary education appears to be in sight, following a meeting between a number of Clare principals.

Following a number of complaints made to local representatives by concerned parents, secondary school enrollment lists are being shared in an effort to address the issue of parents enrolling their children at more than one school for the coming

school year.

Clare’s Deputy Joe Carey said it was important the issue was resolved as quickly as possible as it was causing serious concern and anxiety for students and parents.

Speaking about the issue, Carey added that the problem will also be alleviated due to upcoming developments at Ennis secondary schools, including the construction on an extension to provide an additional 200 school places at Ennis Community College and the addition of eight classrooms at Rice College.

Tulla’s social housing scheme is expected to begin next year STUART HOLLY

LARE County Council has announced the appointment of consultants for the design of a new social housing scheme at Doonaun Road, Tulla.

The 22-unit development is funded by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government and is scheduled for completion in 2021 with construction expected to commence mid 2020.

The social housing scheme will comprise of eight two bed, two-storey apartments, one four bed, two-storey unit, one four bed, one-storey unit (specially adapted), ten four bed, two-storey units and two specially adapted units which will contain three bedrooms over one storey.

The project design team, managed by the Social Development Directorate of Clare County Council, comprises Thompson Architects (Architects), Has-

sett Leyden Flynn (Civil & Structural Engineers), Moloney Fox Consulting Engineers (Mechanical & Electrical Engineers) and Tom McNamara & Partners (Quantity Surveyors).

Following the announcement, Deputy Mayor of Clare, Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy (Fianna Fáil), commented, “This is very good news for applicants on the Council’s waiting list for social housing. I look forward to this scheme progressing to construction stage next year.”

Shannon independent Councillor Gerry Flynn, who is Chair of the Social Development SPC, added, “This development represents a very positive start to the new Council term and it is great to see the Local Authority’s housing construction programme progressing at pace.”

MEETING between a senior official from the Department of Education and the principals of all secondary schools in the Ennis area has taken place this week with a view to ensuring that all children completing their primary education can access secondary school places in September.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has confirmed that secondary school enrolment lists would be shared this week in an effort to address the issue of parents enrolling their children at more than one school for the coming school year.

Deputy Carey said it was important the issue was resolved as quickly as possible as it was causing serious concern and anxiety for students and parents.

“In terms of providing more capacity, construction on an extension to provide an additional 200 school places at Ennis Community College will get under way in the coming weeks, while an addition-

al eight classrooms and a general purpose hall will be made available to Rice College from this Summer. Even more significantly, the Department has stated that it will approve a further extension to provide additional secondary school places if necessary,” he explained.

Carey was acting in response to parents who contacted him directly and following a request from the principals of 12 primary schools who told him they have a large number of children still without secondary school places in Ennis.

He said that a quick and equitable solution was needed so that children without places can attend a secondary school.

'It's like Protestants vs Catholics in Tulla' PÁRAIC McMAHON

ULLA is more divided than parts of Northern Ireland according to one native of the East Clare town.

Joe Floyd ran as an Independent candidate in the recent local elections polling 531 first preference votes in the Killaloe Municipal District. He narrowly secured more votes than poll-topper Joe Cooney in Tulla but admitted to The Clare Echo he wasn’t too confident of winning a seat.

“Tulla is obliterated, it is a deserted town, there doesn’t seem to be anyone doing anything for Tulla, just the odd little thing moving in and moving out. The Council is like our lord, they appear for the last couple of months before the election and they won’t be seen until there is another election.

I wanted to win a seat to be at the table to talk up for Tulla and it didn’t work out, they don’t want it that way and they are happy enough with what they have. I’m not mad, cross or disappointed.”

Equally, Floyd (63) felt the vote in Tulla was going to be split and the father of four experienced what he described as “a falseness” on the campaign. “It was my first time in it and I learned a lot to tell the next fella but I definitely won’t be competing again.”

It’s 25 years since the East Clare town has had its own councillor, that being John Minouge who Joe described as a “good friend".

Recalling a conversation with the late Minouge on how he got elected to the Council, Joe said, “he told me if it was down to Tulla he’d never have seen the inside of the Council Chamber. He said the greater outer parish of Scariff, the parish of Feakle and the upper part of Tulla joining Feakle and Maghera was the place to go for the votes.

It’s 25 years this year since there was a councillor in Tulla, I had all that advice before I went but I still went, I thought the population that had came in, the 400 or 500 that had landed in, the people would be different but they’ve been converted already, it’s split from side to side, it’s like protestants against catholics, you can see it through the parish, it is divided already”.

The former Council employee is not confident a candidate from the parish will emerge in five year's time. “They won’t because Tulla is a divided parish, you can see by the way it has developed.

He added, “Tulla has always been a divided town, I do be up in Northern Ireland because I have good friends there, the North will be divided for another 50 years especially in one town I called to which was a garrison town. Tulla was a garrison town from 1921 to 1930 and that stigma lasted in Tulla till I was a child, I thought it was dying out but it isn’t”.

Lahinch men feature in RTE documentary LAHINCH’S John McCarthy and Ruairí McKiernan are among those featured in a new RTÉ documentary exploring religion, spirituality and secularism in modern Ireland. The Divorcing God documentary aired recently on RTÉ One and is available to watch on the RTÉ Player. In it, comedian and journalist Oliver Callan travels around Ireland interviewing different people on the topics of religion and belief.

John McCarthy from the North Clare Community Church is one of those interviewed by Callan. Once an international surfer with a party lifestyle, John found that finding God gave his life meaning and purpose. He says that before turning to religion “there was a loneliness, an emptiness. That’s when I was really open to listening to God - when I needed help” he says in the one-hour documentary.

Lahinch’s Ruairí McKiernan, a charity founder and a social campaigner who recently completed a seven-year term on the Council of State, tells Callan that a sense of spirituality is an important part of life for him and that this doesn’t require a belief in any particular religion.

Second Ennis Lidl store is rejected PÁRAIC McMAHON

DECISION by Clare County Council to grant Lidl planning permission to build a second store in Ennis has been overturned by An Bord Pléanala.

Representative body for independent retailers, RGDATA appealed the decision by the local authority. They claimed it was an inappropriate large-scale development in an out-of-town location and a significant threat to the vitality and viability of the town centre.

According to An Bord Pléanala, the scale of the “neighbourhood centre” development located between the Clare Rd and Toberteascáin was too much and would damage the vitality of Ennis town centre.

Environmental and flooding concerns were also highlighted by the planning authority. They also maintained a location closer to Ennis town centre was available for

a foodstore and off-license, two retail and office units within a three storey building, childcare unit, public playground and public realm. Three residential units, an office block and ancillary buildings had been earmarked for demolition. HSE to buy greenfield site for €25m hospital CLARE Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has confirmed that the HSE has agreed to purchase a greenfield site for the development of a €25 million community hospital to replace St Joseph’s Geriatric Hospital in Ennis.

It is expected that the site location and development plans will be announced in the coming weeks when the vendor completes regulatory requirements with the charities regulator. The information was conveyed to Deputy Carey by HSE Mid West Community Healthcare Chief Officer Bernard Gloster who said that he expected the requirements to be sorted in “the next short period of weeks”.

The new hospital will provide 100 beds for the care of the elderly, comprising 75 long-stay and 25 short stay beds and is expected to be completed by 2021.

Welcoming Mr Gloster’s response, Deputy Carey said that although funding for the hospital was ring-fenced, it was important that any delays should be kept to an absolute minimum.

“The need for a new hospital was highlighted when the Health and Information Quality Authority (HIQA) placed a restriction on new admissions to St Joseph’s on the grounds that the HSE failed to address ongoing issues at the hospital," the Clarecastle man stated.

INDEPENDENT TD Dr Michael Harty has welcomed the appointment of Clare's new chief superintendent, saying it will bring an end to uncertainty surrounding the role.

The appointment of Chief Superintendent Sean Colleran as head of Clare Garda Division comes in the wake of the news that Chief Superintendent Michael Gubbins is leaving the role he took up less than three months ago, when he replaced the long-serving John Kerin who stepped down in December, 2018. Gubbins has been transferred to a senior role in the Garda’s Special Crimes Operations.

Dr Harty, in a statement to The Clare Echo, said many people felt that Garda Headquarters has not been treating the Clare Garda Division with the importance it deserves, adding “We thought the matter had been resolved in March when Michael Gubbins was appointed to the post. However, we have now learned through the media that the former Head of the Garda Cyber Crime Bureau is not taking up his Ennis appointment but instead will be transferred to a special role in Garda Special Crimes Operations,” said Dr. Harty.

The Kilmihil TD said he does appreciate the enormous challenges facing the Gardaí in tackling gangland crime in Dublin and elsewhere. Nonetheless, rural Ireland has serious crime and other issues that require the concentrated efforts of Garda management to control and hopefully resolve. Dr. Harty said that underlying the appointment of Chief Superintendent in Clare is the fear that ultimately this division will be brought under the control of Galway.

“I am opposed to any such centralisation as Clare would inevitably become the poor relation in such a set-up. However, I welcome the appointment of Sean Colleran as Chief Superintendent. He has considerable experience of west of Ireland policing and I hope he remains in his new position – in Ennis – for many years to come."

Council clarifies role in septic tank inspections

LARE County Council has moved to clarify that they have no involvement with private companies engaged in the cleaning of septic tanks.

Following the distribution of advertising literature in various print media outlets, which states in headed writing "Clare County Council are now inspecting spetic tanks", The Clare Echo contacted council officials for information concerning their role in the inspection of septic tanks.

In a statement to The Clare Echo, a council spokesperson wrote, "Homeowners must not allow individuals enter their property to examine their septic tank unless they have received prior notification in writing from their local authority.

"Spot checks are carried out by the local authority on a regular basis for domestic wastewater treatment systems more commonly known as septic tanks. Prior to inspections, homeowners are contacted by the County Council to alert them to the fact that their property has been marked for re-

view, at least ten days in advance."

They added, "Clare County Council has no involvement with private companies engaged in the cleaning of septic tanks."

This regime was first implemented in 2013. The Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for the development of the national inspection plan for septic tanks and recently published the third National Inspection Plan 2018-2021: Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems following a period of public consultation. The European Court of Justice found that Ireland had not met the legal obligation required by the 1975 Waste Framework Directive to regulate the waste water generated in our unsewered areas. This National Inspection Plan responds to Ireland's failure to implement the 1975 Waste Directive.

The statement continued, "Owners of domestic wastewater treatment systems are required to register their systems in accordance with the Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (Registration) Regulations 2012. Registration forms are available from local authority offices, public li-

braries and Citizen Information Centres. The new legislation has been framed to minimise the impact on householders and there will be no inspection charge."

The basic standard to be met by all domestic wastewater treatment systems is that they do not cause a risk to human health or the environment. Regulations also provide for the proper operation and maintenance of treatment systems and set out de-sludging requirements.

Inspections are aimed at identifying treatment systems which are a risk to public health or the environment. Irrespective of the age of type of system in place, if there is no evidence of risk to human health or the environment, no action will be necessary.

Where an on-site system fails an inspection, the remediation work required will be based on factors such as the nature of the problem, the extent of risk to public health or the environment, existing site size and the hydrological and geological conditions present. Planning permission is not required for works arising from an inspection.

ANS are being encouraged to take advantage of free park & ride shuttle services when the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open makes it inaugural visit to Lahinch Golf Club on July 4-7, 2019.

The second Rolex Series event on the 2019 Race to Dubai will welcome a star-studded field, including 2017 Champion Jon Rahm, former World No1 Martin Kaymer, Europe's 2020 Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington, Englishman Ian Poulter and previous Rolex Series event winners Tommy Fleetwood, Lee Westwood and homegrown star Shane Lowry.

The 2014 Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley will host the event, with tens of thousands of fans expected to descend on the Co Clare links.

All public parking will be located at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open park & ride facilities to ensure minimal disruption for

Lahinch residents and assist with traffic flow. Fans are advised to turn off their satellite navigation systems and follow the appropriate signage to the park & ride sites.

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open park & ride service will run from 7am to 8.45pm on Wednesday July 3; 6.15am to 10pm on Thursday July 4 to Saturday July 6, and from 6.15am to 8pm on the final day of play on Sunday July 7.

The service will be free for all spectators, with visitors travelling to Lahinch who do not plan to attend the golf also permitted to use the park & ride free of charge.

There will also be a free public bus services to and from the event for residents of both Ennistymon and Liscannor from 7am to 8.45pm on Wednesday July 3, 6:15am to 10pm on Thursday July 4 to Saturday July 6, and from 6:15am to 8pm on Sunday July 7.

With fans able to easily walk between the course and Lahinch, spectators are advised to avoid driving into the town, where there will be several traffic regulations and parking restrictions.

Restrictions will be in place on the R478 Lahinch–Liscannor from 6am to 10pm on Wednesday July 3 to Sunday July 7, and the N67 Lahinch Main Street from 4-9pm on Friday July 5 to Sunday July 7.

Tickets for the 2019 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open are on sale at www.dubaidutyfreeirishopen. com and begin at €23 for Pro-Am Wednesday, with single tickets for Thursday or Friday costing €30 and day tickets for each weekend day costing €35 each. An adult season ticket, which covers from Wednesday to Sunday, begins at a special price of just €110.

Children under 12 years of age are entitled to free entry when accompanied by an adult, day junior tickets for those between 12 and 17 years of age are €10 (€30 for a season ticket) while those aged between 18 and 21, as well as students with valid student cards and over 60s, can avail of a concession ticket - €20 for a day (€80 for a season).

North Clare tourist traffic (3-7 July 2019) Generally the route between Lahinch and the Cliffs of Moher/Doolin/North Clare is via the R478. In order to facilitate the safe running of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, the R478 will be closed between Lahinch and Liscannor (Lahinch Golf Club to O’Briens Bridge) on Wednesday 3rd – Sunday 7th between 06.00 – 22.00 daily.

No vehicles (Cars/Cyclists/Coaches) will be allowed to use this route during the above periods. Only event ticket holders will be allowed through the North Entrance (after O’Briensbridge) to the event.

Cars Access to North Clare from Ennis: As it is likely that there will be event related traffic in the Ennistymon Area, road users should expect some delay if using the N85 to access North Clare on the above times/dates. An alternative route is to use the R476 through Corofin – Kilfenora – Lisdoonvarna to gain access to North Clare.

Access to North Clare from south of Lahinch: As it is likely that there will be event related traffic in the Lahinch Area, including a Park & Ride Facility between Moy and Lahinch road users should expect some delay if using the N67 to access North Clare on the above times/dates from south west Clare. As the R478 is closed at Lahinch Golf Club, there will be no direct vehicle access to Liscannor from Lahinch.

There are two recommended alternative routes as follows: 1. Access to North Clare from Lahinch will be via the N67 through Ennistymon.

As it is likely that there will be event related traffic in the Ennistymon Area, road users should expect some delays. An alternative route from Lahinch is to use the N67 northbound through Ennistymon to reach your destination.

2. Access to North Clare from Miltown Malbay and further south.

As it is likely that there will be event related traffic in the Lahinch/Ennistymon Area, road users should expect some delays. An alternative route is to use the R474 – R460 turning in Inagh onto the N85 to Ennistymon and then north via the N67.

Tour & Coach Operators Coach & Tour Operators are advised that if they are planning on visiting the Cliffs of Moher between the 3rd -7th July, the normal route though Lahinch via the R478 will be unavailable. Alternative routes are set out below – signage will be in place and delays are expected. Please note that there will be no Coach parking in Lahinch from Monday 1st – Sunday 7th July (not just the actual event period).

For Coaches coming from the Limerick direction: Coaches should follow the M18 to the Ardrahan Exit, take the R458 to Kilcolgan, and then take the N67 to the Cliffs of Moher. The same route should be used on the return journey.

Coaches coming from Dublin direction: Coaches should follow the M6 to the M18 Interchange, then take Ardrahan Exit, using the R458 to Kilcolgan, and then take the N67 to the Cliffs of Moher. The same route should be used on the return journey.

For Coaches using Tarbert – Killimer Ferry: Coach operators planning on visiting the Cliffs of Moher using the Ferry at Killimer/Talbert should follow the N67 to Kilrush, then the N68 to Ennis, onto the M18, take exit for Kilcolgan and then take the N67 to the Cliffs of Moher. The same route should be used on the return journey.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, Now that our senior hurlers have reached the end of the road, for this year at least, I would appreciate a column inch or two in your publication to express my immense gratitude and appreciation to the team and their managers for the pleasure, enjoyment and pride they gave us in the saffron and blue, not just this year but over the past several seasons.

In truth, we didn’t have the best of years in 2019, things didn’t go as well as planned and we failed to scale the dizzy heights of 2018 when we came within a puck of the sliotar of contesting and possibly winning the All-Ireland. But such is life, fine margins often decide between success and also ran. But lack of success doesn’t equate to lack of effort and I’m quite certain that the disappointment of followers of the Banner is nothing to the devastation felt by the players. Faceless, nameless critics on social media have not the faintest idea of the sacrifices made by members of inter-county panels in terms of life-style, diet, gym-work, self reflection, not to mention the long dark winter slogging up hill and down dale to get the body in shape for the season ahead. No player wanted their season to end in June, especially as their expectations for this year were naturally boosted by the achievements of last year and so is their utter disappointment all the more acute. The dream is dead for now, but hope will sprout again in 2020 To Donal and Gerry, you too had dreams, you also are devastated, because you spared

no effort of mind, body and spirit in chasing that dream and while you may have a few ‘if onlys’ and ‘what ifs’ as all managers must have, they are as nothing to the pride and enjoyment you gave the thousands of genuine Clare supporters over the past several years.

Thankfully I don’t feel any need to bother with social media and so have not had to endure any of the verbal slurry thrown in your direction recently by nameless trolls whose efforts on behalf of Clare hurling have amounted to 2 finger tapping on a smart phone keypad, probably while slumped rat-arsed drunk on a bar stool. At least that’s the only excuse I can offer for the foul-smelling incontinent scribbling which I’m told you have been insulted with in recent weeks.

And indeed no marks to some in the more ‘respectable’ media - the editor of The Clare Champion was quick off the mark in joining the baying horde screaming for scapegoats.

Gentlemen, as managers you have always presented yourselves professionally, with dignity and without histrionics or petulance.

You gave your lives to the cause for the past 10 years, between minor, Under 21 (3 All-Irelands quickly forgotten by some!) and now 3 years at senior. Should you decide to call it a day, no genuine Clare supporter will blame you - you have richly earned the respect and admiration of all who care about our great game.

RCB COMMUNITY RADIO TO BROADCAST AROUND THE CLOCK WITH A LIVE 24 HOUR RADIOTHON

CB Radio will be broadcasting a marathon Live Radiothon for 24 hours from 1pm on Friday 21 June until 1pm on Saturday 22 June to support National Community Radio day. Volunteers of all backgrounds will be manning the decks and playing a wide variety of music and chat throughout the 24 hours to help raise funds for the local community radio station based in South West Clare.

Volunteers and local businesses are helping to support the station by sponsorships and sponsor cards are in many of the shops and businesses in Kilkee and Kilrush. 5,000-YEAR-OLD MURDER MYSTERY AT CLARE MUSEUM

A

5,000-year-old murder mystery from the Burren in County Clare is the subject of an exhibition at Clare Museum in Ennis.

The ‘Death on the Burren’ exhibition will be launched on 25th June at 7.30 pm by Dr. Ann Lynch, who led the excavation of Poulnabrone in 1986 making some intriguing finds, including the suspicious death of an individual who was buried there.

The free exhibition, which will run until the end of 2019, provides an opportunity for families to get their detective caps on to help solve the ancient mystery by examining the evidence from scientific analysis of a hip-bone with an arrowhead embedded in it.

Situated on Karst limestone in the Burren, the Poulnabrone Dolmen is one of Ireland’s more accessible megalithic structures attracting over tens of thousands of visitors each year. It was used as a burial place for 600 years between 5,800 and 5,200 years ago.

According to museum Curator, John Rattigan, “This exhibition is

just one of several initiatives that Clare Museum will be rolling out in the coming months as part of its Education and Engagement Programme. The programme is designed to promote the museum’s potential as an exceptional educational resource while also highlighting the rich culture and history of County Clare for tourists and locals alike.”

In the months ahead, Clare Museum will begin a series of public talks on a broad range of historical topics, will make available replica artefacts for parents with children to explore, activity sheets and some new projects to provide support for local primary schools.

The ‘Death on the Burren’ exhibition opening takes place from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on 25th June.

Entry to the launch event is free of charge, but places are limited and must be booked via email only (dkeller@clarecoco.ie).

The Munster Regional Final for the 2019 Irish Restaurant Awards took place in the Strand Hotel, Limerick where

S they congregated for their first meeting since May’s local elections, successful candidates in the Shannon Municipal District set out their stall for the next five years by pinpointing the future of Shannon Airport as the biggest concern.

Independent councillor PJ Ryan prompted the discussion, signalling his disapproval with the current situation at Shannon Airport. “We need to show leadership and have an input with the Airport. Sometimes it is extremely quiet, I’d be saying to Cathal in his role and I know well he will do his best, Gerry as Chair of the Shannon District and the Director need to up the ante to get Shannon performing 100%, it is definitely not performing 100% at the minute”.

“There are problems with marketing and we’re blaming Dublin, one of the major problems is the amount of people being taken out of the area on buses, it is a crazy situation”. The Cratloe resident referred to a thesis conducted by his niece-in-law which surveyed the amount of people leaving Galway City on buses, 87 percent of which were going to Dublin Airport on transatlantic flights.

“We need to change that whether that’s from Government or not, the flights are coming from Dublin but that’s a chicken and egg situation”.

Cathaoirleach of the Shannon MD, Cllr Gerry Flynn was “glad” to see the debate taking place.

He was hopeful political events may see Minister for Transport, Shane Ross visit the county. “With an election pending, the Minister might have a meeting in Shannon. He is the first Minister to have land sickness because he doesn’t want to leave Dublin”.

Cllr John Crowe declared action must be taken otherwise there is a risk of the Airport disappearing. “In a fortnight there are 40 of us flying from Sixmilebridge to France and we have to go from Dublin which is a disaster. We should be sitting down on a one to one level with these people (Shannon Group). If we don’t do something soon, there will be no Airport, everything is going into Dublin. The whole Mid West should stand united on this and fight for our Airport”.

Fianna Fáil’s Cathal Crowe felt Shannon Airport was “the important issue” of the MD. He reflected on being appointed the Cathaoirleach of the Shannon MD in 2014 and revealed he was only invited to the Airport on one such occasion whilst in the position. “We are an arm in local Government, Shane Ross is a long way away but we are always here, we should be working in parallel and in tandem with them. There needs to be a forum which allows us to feed in and have a regular say in the Airport. Maybe an SPC would link in with them, it needs to be recognised and respected so that we don’t go cap in hand to the Airport, it hasn’t been good enough heretofore”.

His party colleague, Cllr Pat McMahon confirmed that in his new post as Chair of the Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee (SPC), “The number one priority will be Shannon Airport”, to which Cllr Flynn responded “It will dovetail nicely with the Economic SPC”.

McKee hoping to return to political office in late 2019 PÁRAIC McMAHON

IKE McKee is expected to return to political office later this year with the Sinn Féin councillor to undergo a medical procedure in the coming weeks.

McKee saw his first preference vote rise by 269 at last month’s local elections, he had been unable to canvass for the final weeks of the campaign due to illness.

Director of Service, Liam Conneally updated elected representatives of the Shannon Municipal District on the health of their colleague at Tuesday’s meeting having visited him earlier that afternoon.

“He is in good form, he has a medical procedure to undergo in the coming weeks and hopes to be back after that. Hopefully in quarter three or quarter four of the year he will be back”.

Fianna Fáil’s Cathal Crowe stated, “He is a key

member of our team and a friend to all at the table”. Cllr Gerry Flynn who alongside McKee are the sole Shannon Town councillors added, “He is making progress which is good and he hopes to be back on the pitch soon”.

HERE are times in our lives when we believe we are floating through life, bobbing on the surface of life without a care in the world. Sometimes this leads to a lack of appreciation of what we have and a lack of awareness of the difficulties others are facing on their life journey. When we allow ourselves to understand the impact our actions have on ourselves and on other’s, we realize the necessity to take loving action. We each have the power to correct conditions within us as well as to affect the world we live in. There are so many ways to apply love in our everyday lives. Yet, if we do not take care of ourselves and one another, it is virtually impossible to feel and share love with the world around us. As an act of self-love, we can begin to educate ourselves and learn to take care of our physical bodies as well as keep our thoughts and feelings positive and loving. Nurturing ourselves also teaches us how to nurture life around us and lend each other a helping hand. I believe in helping others as much as I physically and mentally can. Whether it is something big or small, I think that one simple act of kindness can make a huge impact. A true story from my work in Africa might help to explain.

Take care of one another “A young aid worker named Robert was travelling down a street in Luanda, the capital of Angola in Africa. He was going a bit too fast in his sleek, white jeep, which was only a few months old.

He was watching for street kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. Just then, a brick sailed out and wallop, it smashed into the jeep’s shiny white side door leaving a huge dent. Immediately, he screeched to a stop, slamming on the brakes and gearing into reverse. His tires spun madly, as he brought the jeep back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. Robert

jumped out of the jeep, grabbed the street kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the street kid, “What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?!”

Building up a head of steam, he went on. “That brick you threw is going to cost you a lot of money.

Why did you throw it?” “Please, mister, please...I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do!” pleaded the street kid. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop!”

Tears were dripping down the boy’s face, as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother, mister,” he said. “He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.”

Sobbing, the boy asked the young aid worker, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.” Moved beyond words, the young aid worker tried desperately to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat.

Straining, he lifted the young child back into the wheelchair. He took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that the boy was OK. He then watched the young street kid push him down the path toward their home in the shanty area of Luanda. It was a long walk back to the sleek, white, shining, jeep. Robert never did fix the dent in the side door of his jeep. He kept the dent to remind him, not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at him to get his attention and care.”

God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don’t have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us to get our attention. As always it’s our

choice to listen and respond or not. You see, at times in our lives, we tend to become so wrapped up in other things, we become focused on ourselves, our jobs or our hobbies and we do not realise there are others around us that need our help, care and love. We can react in a negative way to a situation without fully realising or taking the time to look at the other person’s situation. You see real acts of kindness or lending a hand is about touching hearts and souls and really caring for one another and in turn touching your own heart and soul and caring for yourself. As the blessing goes, “It is in giving that we truly receive”!

Acts of Kindness Practice constant acts of kindness if you can and you will then bring kindness upon yourself.

Forgiveness is the easiest and most powerful act of kindness you can make.

Both for you and for others, this

Our lives are filled with opportunities to experience love, tolerance, peace and joy. When we, as individuals, realize our potential to love unconditionally, we transform ourselves and one another and

the world we live in at the same time. The choice is ours to create a world of joy and happiness, love and goodwill. Every moment of every day is a new beginning.

The meaning held in these words opens us to a new way of living and experiencing life. Start each day and each week as a new journey of self discovery. Let go of yesterday and tomorrow and embrace the power of now. Remind yourself daily of the newness of life in the moment and learn to lend each other a helping hand through daily acts of kindness, care and love. Touch souls and change the world for good!

A story about lending a helping hand “Paddy died and passed onto the next life. When he appeared before God, he passed all the questions and was allowed to enter heaven. He thanked God, but before he left for Heaven he made one request - a rather curious one at that. “May I visit Hell to see what it looks like”? The request was granted and Paddy stood at the fiery gates of Hell. The sights and the sounds stirred him to his depths. There was the weeping and wailing that he heard about.

But there was something else that he had not heard about. Food lay all over the place in abundance. Despite the evident great supply of food everybody was suffering the agonies of starvation. Paddy was puzzled.

Each person held a knife and a fork in their hands. There was plenty of food, so why the starvation? As he observed the plight, Paddy noticed that each one was able to pick up the food with their knives and forks, but were unable to get the food into their mouths because the knives and forks were to long. And the one unalterable rule of Hell was that each person must hold the knives and forks at the very end. This was Hell. Each one was completely centered on

his or her own needs and were unable to satisfy themselves.

Then it was time for Paddy to go to heaven and when he got there, there was the joy and glory and happiness that he had heard about. But like hell there was something in Heaven that he had also not heard about. Here he found a strange similarity to the conditions that prevailed in hell. There was the same pair of unusually long knives and forks.

The exact unalterable rule was in effect, that each one must hold the knife and fork at the very end which again made it impossible for each person to reach their own mouth. But there was one big difference. Each person was feeding their neighbor and each in turn was being fed by their neighbor.

This was definitely Heaven. Each person was completely concerned about the needs of their neighbor.

In this concern for their neighbor, their own needs were completely satisfied.”

Community feels ‘disconnect’ with Cliffs Of Moher attraction PÁRAIC McMAHON

“DISCONNECT” exists between Clare’s premier tourist attraction and those living in close proximity to it.

Visitor numbers to the Cliffs of Moher increased by 3.8 per cent to 1,580,010 in 2018 making it Ireland’s second most popular tourist attraction for the fifth year running. A staff of 110 are employed at its Visitor Experience during peak season.

With the subsequent presence of coaches on North Clare’s smaller rural roads, an improvement in traffic management was sought by the newly elected quartet of councillors, Joe Killeen, Shane Talty, Roisin Garvey and Joe Garrihy at the adjourned June meeting of Clare County Council.

In a jointly written response, Directors of Services Carmel Kirby and Leonard Cleary outlined the measures being taken by the local authority relating to traffic management in the area through liaisons with state agencies and surrounding communities.

Such examples referred to included a traffic congestion survey being conducted by Fáilte Ireland along The Wild Atlantic Way, an investment in the improvement of road infrastructure approaching the Cliffs, and an increase in presence of traffic wardens.

“On a pilot basis, the Cliffs of Moher is operating a courtesy shuttle bus service for visitors who are afforded the opportunity to park in local towns and villages. Clare County Council and National Parks and Wildlife Service have been meeting over the last year to discuss a vision for a sustainable tourism model in the Burren. The Transportation Department has planned to commence a review in September 2019 which will explore opportunities to improve transportation across the county,” the reply concluded.

Cllr Killeen highlighted there has been an influx in users to routes such as New Quay, Doolin, Fanore and Kilfenora. “The road

by Kilfenora football field is being used by buses going to the Cliffs of Moher, Google have identified this as a suitable route, it isn’t and needs to be looked at. At times the traffic is bottle neck in Corofin with a complete lack of access. There are a lack of pull-

in spaces from Ennis to Inagh, the lack of public transport also needs to be looked at.

We welcome the tourists but need to look at overall traffic”. He predicted, “Numbers will increase at the Cliffs of Moher, we have the opportunity to increase economic flow right throughout the whole county”.

Fine Gael’s Joe Garrihy warned of the growing distance between the Cliffs and the personnel living in the areas closest to them.

“Talking to people in North Clare, they are completely disconnected from the Cliffs of Moher and have been since it’s inception.

I can speak for the communities, they feel completely disconnected from the Cliffs of Moher and haven’t been engaged with. We have a wonderful product, we have some of the most precious environments”.

Council Chief Executive, Pat Dowling expressed his disappointment with some of the comments passed. “I’m disappointed to hear the local community don’t feel part of the Cliffs of Moher, in the past week local farmers were met regarding plans, I’m not sure who you were talking to Cllr Garrihy but we are engaging with the local community”.

Unveiling of memorial sculpture at Doolin Pier

DOOLIN Tidy Towns would like to invite the public to the unveiling of a beautiful sculpture of a Whale’s Tail at Doolin Pier on July 6 at 1:30pm.

The sculpture is dedicated to the memory of all who lost their lives along this coast. It is titled ‘Rory’s Tale’ after five year old Rory Sambrook from Doolin who lost his life in 2000.

The stainless steel sculpture which stands over 8ft tall was created by Andy O’Doherty.

He kindly donated his time and talent to designing and constructing the sculpture. The committe say they “are eternally grateful to him for his generosity”.

Doolin Tidy Towns were honoured to be able to assist Andy to bring his dream to fruition by setting up a Go Fund Me campaign to raise the finance for the project. Doolin Tidy Towns also liaised with PJ Carmony from Clare County Council on the location of the sculpture at Doolin Pier. “We would like to thank everyone who donated to the Go Fund Me campaign and the following people in particular for their time, expertise and materials free gratis: Deirdre Foran, Sean Cullinan, Cormac Shannon, and Liam Shannon.”

IFTY Shades Greener is an online training platform to help hospitality businesses reduce their carbon footprint and save money of their utility bills. Speaking about her journey, Raquel Noboa told The Clare Echo that she has drawn on her background in the hospitality sector to grow her business.

“My mission is to help people understand that ‘greening’ their business is easier than they think and it also does not mean you have to spend more money. The opposite exactly, there are loads of actions you can take iny our life or your business to reduce your use of water, waste and energy which in turn will reduce your utility bills.”

Raquel has worked in hotels since the age of 17. However her ‘green journey’ began at Hotel Doolin, where she was working there as Sales & Marketing manager.

“My general manager at the time called me to tell me he wanted to run a Green Hotel and that I was to become their new Green Manager and achieve Green certification. At the start I was not excited, in fact I was even a little resentful! I had no idea where to start, and obtaining certification is quite hard as you need to comply with a rigorous set of rules but at the time there was little information for me to find out how to get there. So I spent the first year googling things, finding little tricks and tips on the areas or energy, water and waste minimization. We started taking control of our building, the energy and water you use and the waste we produced. It is funny, I studied Hotel Management for five years at the start of my career. They teach you how to budget and forecast, how to control your staff wages, etc, but nobody tells you that when you finally become a hotel or restaurant manager you will also have to manage a building. And the energy, water and waste of a building can amount to be the second biggest cost to your business, yet, nobody tells you this in college.”

Raquel says she firmly believes that in order to promote sustainable living, we need to speak about the things everyone can do, and not just the big projects the 10 per cent can do, such as buying electric cars, installing air pumps, etc.

“Yes, global warming is the biggest problem of our time and it requires big measures, but it is our government and policy-makers that need to make the big changes. When I meet hotel or restaurant owners, or even any person in the ground, the perception out there is that running a Green business costs a lot of money. This is where we are going wrong, there are so many things that a regular person can do to reduce their impact to the environment without having to spend a fortune. It is the same principle for hospitality businesses, And that is what I am about, start small, get the big wins, and then look at possible investment projects to become even greener.”

In her role with Hotel Doolin, within two years Raquel helped the business reduce their energy by 30 per cent, waste by 25 per cent and water by 40 per cent. “Imagine what that did to our utility bills - we had saved a lot of money, and then I was allowed used that money to invest in bigger projects that required investment. But in reality, we had saved that money before we re-invested it, so this meant our Green actions had not required any capital investment at all from the owners. Over the next few years we became the greenest Hotel in Ireland and right now, Hotel Doolin is getting ready to announce that they are going to be completely Carbon Neutral this year which is unbelievable!”

Three years ago Raquel set up her own consultancy company to ‘green’ hotels and restaurants around the country, and recently has diversified into online training programmes.

“If [businesses] take one of my courses, they will achieve great results within 10 to 12 weeks, assuming they implement the actions I am teaching them.”

PARISH FUN DAY ‘AN EXPRESSION OF COMMUNITY SPIRIT’ IN QUIN CIAN O'BROIN

OMMUNITY ethos lies at the heart of Quin village. As an expression of this communal spirit, the parish will host a family fun day on Saturday the 22nd of June beginning in St. Mary’s Church at 12 noon.

The outing is the first of its kind, espoused

by Father Tom O’ Gorman (pictured right) the local parish administrator. Chairperson of the Pastoral Council John Wall acknowledges that, “Father Tom wanted to celebrate the parish family.”

“What he wanted to do was not only to say thank you to everyone involved, but indeed thank you to the parish for getting involved.”

It promises to be an action-packed day for both young and old within the community. Mr Wall mentions that, “we’re going to

have a barbecue, bouncy castles, face painters, darts boards, giant connect four, giant Jenga, we also have Shannon Ices and it’s all free. It’s by the parish to the parish and for the parish.”

Mr Wall’s responsibility fell with booking

the various catering companies and reiterated the collaborative efforts put forward within the community to make the special day come about. “We sourced within the parish what we could. We are keeping it as local as we possibly can. It’s a day out for all parishioners regardless of their age or creed.

It’s not targeted at one demographic, it’s all welcome.”

Attributing the idea for the fun day to parish priest Tom O’ Gorman, Mr. Wall outlined his integration into the community, “He’s only with us about a year or so.

He came from Cloughleigh in Ennis. He has settled in remarkably well. He feels welcome.

It’s completely new for him but he’s one of our own now. He loves us and we love him and it’s good to give back something every once in a while.”

Speaking on those who are less active or isolated within the community, Mr. Wall feels that this is an excellent opportunity

to assimilate with the well established and highly proactive organisations.

“There will always be people, for their own good reasons who may or may not be active within the church at the moment. I think that in an informal way certainly events like this may persuade some people to come back or at least speak with those that are active within the church. It certainly won’t do any harm, that’s for sure.”

The events for the day are listed on the Quin-Clooney-Maghera website, with times, dates and venues for those that are interested.

LYNCH LEADS THE WAY WITH MINORS

Qualifying for the Munster Final has been the goal for the Clare minor hurlers since November according to their manager, Clooney/Quin clubman Fergal Lynch.

Despite holding a half-time six point advantage, the concession of two goals in the space of a minute during the third quarter would see Clare’s character tested, fortunately they responded to the test.

Lynch was in awe of the spirit shown by the Banner youngsters. “We hit 17 wides last week and we were absolutely gutted coming away but we know in our heart and soul that we had an opportunity to rectify it today and no better day to do it”.

“We have guys with great legs and great character, to a man they ran themselves into the ground, the hooks and blocks put in by Cormac Murphy were unbelievable. Oisin O’Donnell who played in the forwards the last three games had the biggest job of the day to mark Flynn and what a job he did”.

Regarding the moment of brilliance from Sean Ronan, Fergal recalled the difficult journey he has travelled with injury. “Sean is an unbelievable stick man, he broke his jaw last year, a very bad break, three breaks in his jaw and put him out for a good bit of the training. He was gutted, he thought he wasn’t going to be a Clare minor”.

Reaching the provincial decider has been the goal for all involved for quite some time.

“The Munster Final we’ve been talking about it since last November, this group of players won very little at 14s, 15s and 16s, not much thought of them, a lot of work put in by other managers. We’ve a special group here and they’re going to have a conveyor belt for our seniors in a couple of years time hopefully”.

A defeat to Cork would have ended their involvement in the campaign, according to the Quin principal their approach to gaining an edge was reminding the players of how familiar they were with Cusack Park in comparison to the Leesiders. “There was as much pressure on Cork as there was on us, Cork were coming to our home ground where we had played already, they’ve never played here and they needed to win. I tried to keep it as low key as I could for our lads, it was a testament to their character, for lads to come out and play in front of a crowd for the second half from two points down to win by a point, that’s unbelievable character”.

On June 30 they face off with Limerick at the LIT Gaelic Grounds for the second time this year, the Treaty County being the only side to defeat the Clare minors in championship this year, three points the margin between them. Renewing rivalry with them is a challenge the 2013 All-Ireland medallist, his management and panel of players cannot wait for, they have after all been waiting for Munster Final day since November.

“Limerick were our toughest test, we were fairly bruised from the week before, we’re going to go back to the drawing board and be ready to take on Limerick and see what way things go and cherish the moment”.

Clooney Quin GAA get behind Laura campaign CLOONEY-Quin GAA have rowed in behind a campaign to raise awareness for the HPV vaccine, an initiative being run in honour of the late Laura Brennan.

In a statement, Clooney-Quin GAA said they “are delighted to lend our support to The #HPVvaccine Awareness Campaign by commissioning a once-off club training top to support this worthy initiative.”

They added, “The legacy left by the late Laura Brennan continues to save lives.”

For every HPV-branded jersey ordered for Clooney-Quin club members, a €5 donation will also go to Slainte on Clair. The club will be taking orders for the next two weeks with adult and kids samples available for fitting at the Club Coffee Shop on Saturday morning between 9.30-1pm and from 7-8pm, Monday to Friday of next week.

It comes as GAA clubs across the country are doing their bit to raise awareness for the HPV vaccine, a campaign that had been spearheaded by Ennis’ Laura Brennan up until her death in March.

Bringing a new angle on the campaign to encourage teenage girls and boys to get the HPV vaccine, sporting clubs are being urged to place the logo of the HPV vaccine on training tops for their various teams.

Numerous teams and clubs have already committed to backing the initiative with Éire Óg Inis, Wolfe Tones na Sionna, Kilrush ladies football Mooncoin camogie some of the clubs already on board in less than a week.

Clare’s senior hurling panel are the most high profile team to confirm they are partaking in the campaign. “We will be playing our part to promote takeup of the HPV vaccine as well as marking Laura Brennan’s legacy as an inspiring advocate for the Vaccination Programme by wearing a specially commissioned set of training gear next week,” a spokesperson for the management told The Clare Echo.

In a statement, the Brennan family acknowledged the support they have received in recent weeks and the amount of goodwill towards the latest campaign.

We are honoured that the Clare senior hurlers and various other GAA clubs in Ireland are putting the HPV logo on their l TRIBUTE: The HPV-commissioned jersey as worn by Quin’s Ryan Taylor. Relay for Life is a 24 hour event that brings the whole community together.

At Relay, teams of family members and friends commit to having at least one team member walk around the track at all times. While they are doing that, a festival of fun and entertainment takes place which unites the community in the fight against cancer.

June 22nd and finishing on Sunday June 23rd at 2pm.

This event, whilst supporting the amazing work done by the Irish Cancer Society, is also very much a community event. It brings together, first and foremost, cancer survivors who get VIP treatment for the 24 hours with afternoon tea, and then they can avail of the services of varied health and wellness practitioners, who are providing their services for free during the event. The survivors start the proceedings at 2pm on Saturday with an inspirational ‘survivors lap’ where they are cheered on by family, friends and teams from the community.

It also brings in members from the wider community. This year the event is at its maximum capacity of 25 teams. These teams commit to having at least one team member on the track at all times over the 24 hours and they are dedicated to following the motto of Relay for Life which is Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.

While this is going on, the teams will have various different fun activities going on.

There will also be live music, and other events like, yoga, tae bo, Zumba, pound fitness, ballet, face painting and many more. A particularly special time during the event is the Candle of Hope ceremony that takes place at dusk. At approximately 10:30pm on Saturday night. The track will be lined with lit candle bags, each one individually decorated and dedicated to a loved one lost or someone currently on a cancer journey. Candle bags will be available on Saturday for €5 each.

Last year’s event was very successful and this year’s promises to be even bigger and better. Everyone is welcome to join in, it is not just for team members. Relay For Life Ennis is a family friendly, alcohol free, smoking/vaping free event. For health and safety reasons, it also is a dog-free event. REELING IN THE YEARS

1986 H I NTERNATIONALLY, 1986 stands out in the history books as a year of tragedy. With radiation sweeping across Eastern Europe, there were fears of unregulated pollution in the form of acid rain in County Clare. Fortunately, these contagions were tamed, and Clare had issues of a different nature to tackle. These came in the form of a decrepit and nationally neglected general hospital as well as the contentious divorce referendum of 1986.

CLARE COAT OF ARMS

Firstly, identity and symbolism are vital to every county. It separates one from another, amongst other things. In 1986, the Clare County Council introduced an exclusive coat of arms for the county. The design was modelled from the sporting colours of blue and saffron brandished for decades by enthusiastic GAA supporters.

A statement was released to inform the public that, “The purpose of the design is to evolve an appropriate heraldic design which truly reflects the topography, history and achievements of County Clare.”

The coat of arms shows a shield subdivided into six sections, of which each represent a different ancient area which make up the county itself. The rose motif signals the Burren. The tau cross relates to the heritage of antiquity in the county.

The Irish crown signifies the kingdom of Thomond, a replete place name throughout local history books. The reverse pile is akin to the lift-offs over the Shannon Estuary, and Shannon Airport. The Stag’s head is synonymous with the many Clare families that bear this emblem in their own coat of arms and finally, the circle of fire relates to electricity production in Moneypoint and ArdNaCrusha.

UNREST AT ENNIS HOSPITAL

Ennis General Hospital has a long-standing tumultuous relationship with the people living within its vast catchment area. This fact remains truer than ever to this very day. In 1986, the mishaps and incompetency shown by the hospital itself caused uproar amongst the people of Clare.

Local newspapers bore stories of outraged individuals that received little joy from the services rendered by the hospital. Headlines likened Ennis General Hospital to a war zone, as one third of the beds available were taken away by the government. Private individual rooms were doubled up in order to accommodate more patients and the female surgical ward catering for up to 36 people was overpopulated. A decline in nursing standards was noted due to overpopulation and stressful conditions subsequently leading to an increased number of nurses on sick leave.

Built in 1946, there were calls to close the hospital indefinitely due to such low standards. An inspection spearheaded by the Fire Authorities of Ennis arrived at this conclusion. The hospital was seen as incapable of dealing with emergencies due to various hazards. Ward closures and staffing cuts also hit St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ennis very hard. Complaints of overcrowding were perpetual throughout 1986 and the Fire Authorities conducted several more inspections resulting in the inquisition as to why there were not an adequate amount of fire alarms installed. As hindsight has shown us, the steady decline of the hospital was to follow. History certainly does tend to repeat itself.

CLARE SAYS NO TO DIVORCE

The recent success of the 2019 divorce referendum highlighted the forward thinking and progressive nature of Irish society in the twenty first century. County Clare and much of the Irish nation did not share these collective heartfelt sentiments in 1986. The Divorce Referendum of that year returned quite a hefty ‘no’ from the people of Ireland. The amendment was defeated by an overwhelming 13,649 votes in County Clare. The more densely areas of the county such as Ennis, Killaloe and Kilrush turned out a large no vote. On the other hand, Shannon was in favour of the referendum with fifty-five percent voting yes and fourty-five percent with a no vote. An Anti-Divorce Campaign led by Mr. David Browne did a great deal of work to sway the minds of the public. Their chairman admitted after the victory that he did not rejoice at the defeat to the referendum but felt that efforts must be put forward to protect family life and the constitution. How far we have come in recent years!

Clare’s thatched history I ALL,

Just recently as I was making my annual pilgrimage to the Ennistymon Agricultural show via the R476. Two kilometres past the fishing village of Corofin on the Kilnaboy side I caught sight of the blue waters of Inchiquinn Lake where on the northern shore wrapped in an atmosphere of hazel and mystery lay the island of O’Quinn’s. This is where the high chiefs of the Burren [O’Brines] once resided in a 15th century castle and mansion house, sadly now in ruins.

Outlined by the rolling hills of forested uplands, you will find etched a curvy mountain road leading to the summit of Clifden Hill, where lays a cluster of thatched cottages with brilliant white walls identical to the ones which survived the invasion of history and link us to the past.

For me, I felt I was in the filming

scene from the Quiet Man, 1951.

At one time, these quaint little cottages were dotted all around Clare but regrettably due to famine evictions and immigration they became abandoned and fell into disrepair. Today these vernacular architectures, of which there are 143, have almost been erased from our landscapes as they no longer serve a useful purpose and are now often used as outhouses, cattle pins or perhaps swept away altogether. It seems a pity tha these gems are becoming chapters of bygone days.

On a lighter note, credit must be given to people who take it upon themselves to rebuild modern thatched cottages (like the ones here) where traditional appearances of rural life are preserved thus allowing us to take a step back in time, escape the busyness of life and visualize living in a little piece of history.

As I stopped to admire I

couldn’t help but wonder what life was like, also the challenges our ancestors experienced in the 1800s when they had no electricity or running water, so I decided to pay a visit to an old friend called Mickileen who now lives in Corofin and is knowledgeable in this area. Regrettably Mick was not at home, however he promised to catch up with me later.

SKODA’S SCALA WILL TAKE ON THE FOCUS AND COROLLA he new Skoda compact hatchback has been named “Scala”. The name “Scala” is derived from the Latin word for steps and represents Skoda’s recent progress and success.

The Scala is a spiritual successor to the Skoda Rapid that concluded production earlier this year. While the Rapid was offered in saloon and hatchback body styles, the Scala is exclusively offered as a hatchback. The vehicles share very little in common with the Scala showcasing some of the most advanced technologies available in the Volkswagen Group.

The wide and low stance and protruding front grille hide the fact that the Scala is one of the largest cars in its segment measuring 4.4-metres in length. These dimensions deliver unrivalled interior spaciousness; particularly for rear seat passengers. Boot capacity is not sacrificed with 467-litres of capacity with unfolded seats. ‘Very weird feeling’ for Cleary Páraic McMahon

UNDAY’S victory over Cork was Clare’s second of this year’s Munster campaign but for Conor Cleary it was his first taste of championship success in 2019.

As Clare accounted for Waterford in the opening round, Cleary was a frustrated bystander, suspended for the clash following his dismissal against the Déise in the Allianz National Hurling League.

That frustration he experienced before a championship ball was pucked this year resurfaced over the weekend. Clare gave the display they had been waiting to give and for Conor it underlined what they are capable of, the pity being it will be another 11 months before they dip their toes in the championship waters again.

“It’s a very weird feeling. The last two weeks we didn’t do ourselves justice and that was the real Clare team, it’s a pity we didn’t show it in the last two weeks, great we got the win but very disappointing because if we could have put a performance like that together in the last two weeks who knows where we would be know, it’s very disappointing”.

He added, “We said all week if we got space in front of our full-forward line that

our boys would be lethal inside, they got the space and the boys did well. Every game we’ve had in Munster this year we’ve set our stall out early but it just didn’t happen for us on the two days against Tipperary and Limerick, it was heartening to put in a performance today but we would love to be going further”.

On why “it didn’t happen” against the Premier and Treaty Counties, the Miltown Malbay man reflected, “It’s very hard to put a finger on it. From last year, everyone has upped it fitness and hurling wise, we’re doing more now than we were doing last year but it just hasn’t clicked for us in the last two days, it’s very disappointing but the only heartening thing is we put in a performance that we’re capable of today and it’s great for everyone involved that we’re able to show what the Clare team is about”.

Losing the games rather than the subsequent dramatic reactions from certain quarters scribing the obituary of this panel of players was the toughest part of the past month, he admitted. “It was tough from the point of view that we were losing games, what was going on outside was beyond our control, we’re only focused on what goes on inside. At the end of the day however good or bad you are, you’re the only person who can control how well you play in this game and that’s all we were worried about today, trying to get the best out of ourselves and thankfully we did that.

“To be honest we don’t really care what people question us on. We’re doing more

this year than last year as regards working on our own, trying to bring things to an extra level, the two days against Tipperary or Limerick, I don’t know if we were trying too hard or what happened, we just didn’t get a performance out of ourselves. Our workrate was way up from what it was and we really put in a performance that this Clare team is capable of, it’s just unfortunate we can’t

go on from this and show again how good we are for the rest of the championship, it’s something to build on for next year.

He added, “No one was paying any heed to local papers. We’ve video analysis and we can see how we’re playing ourselves, we know how we’re playing, that’s what we were concerned about all week, people can say what they want”.

CLARE ended their Championship campaign on a positive note following a fired up performance against Cork in Cusack Park on Sunday, to ensure confidence is restored going into the 2020 season some 11 months away.

Cork needed a win to stand any chance of getting into the Munster final, however they were to leave Cusack Park with the consolation of challenging for All-Ireland honours via a preliminary quarter final against Laois or Westmeath on July 6.

Clare got off to the perfect start when Shane O’Donnell outfought his marker in a footrace to an Aidan McCarthy-delivered ball, and with plenty of work still to do he fired past Anthony Nash. Aidan then extended Clare’s lead with a well taken point but this game was sure to be a thriller when Cork hit back with a goal of their own, Pat Horgan reacting quickest to send home a rebound from an Aidan Walsh effort which was saved by Donal Tuohy.

In a firecracker of an opening, Clare found further succes through Peter Duggan and Tony Kelly and the scores were level at 1-05 each after 18 minutes. Then Clare hit a purple scoring five unanswered points through Duggan (three frees), Colm Galvin and John Conlon. Cork responded through the ever-present Alan Cadogan before Tony Kelly would produce Clare’s second goal with a stunning top corner shot, having been fed the ball by Duggan. Cork hit back with a brace of frees from Horgan to leave the score at the interval 2-10 to 1-08 in Clare’s favour.

Cork started the second half with more purpose scoring the opening four points through Horgan (two), Cadogan and Darragh Fitzgibbon however Clare steadied the ship thanks to Duggan (four), Diarmuid Ryan (2) and the very astute Colm Galvin to leave the score at 2-17 to 1-14 after fifty-five minutes. Following some tit-for-tat scoring, Cork scored their second goal through the inspirational Horgan to put the game on a knife-edge with just one point separating the sides in the final stretch. However Clare hit back with three unanswered points thanks a brace of frees from Peter Duggan and a long-range effort by Galvin. Pat Horgan rounded up the scoring for Cork before Clare substitute Cathal McInerney fired over the final two points of the game. When referee Paud O’Dwyer blew the final whistle, there were mixed emotions as Clare go out of the Championship on scoring difference behind Cork and Limerick.

MID a thunder and lightning storm that was more akin to Munster League conditions than Munster Championship, Clare put in an electric performance against Cork on Sunday.

It was clear from comments made by players and management after the game that they felt aggrieved at some of the criticisms that were aimed their way after the Tipperary and Limerick performances. No doubt this was talked about all week in the lead up to this game and the lads used it as fuel to their fire when preparing for Cork. We saw the best of this Clare team for the full 70 minutes for the first time in this year’s Championship. So, what changed?

Firstly, the attitude and desire that was shown was like night and day from the last two weekends. There was a buzz around Cusack Park after our epic win in the minor game which helped the team and crowd in getting up for the game. While much was made of criticism aimed at management and players after last week’s performance, there is no doubting that Clare fans who came to Cusack Park on Sunday were desperate to get behind the team and support the lads come what may. While ultimately our destiny was not in our hands, there was a real sense that the players disregarded this and were only worried about putting in a performance in front of their home supporters.

Right from the off excitement grew with an explosive start. A brilliant individual goal from Shane O’Donnell within 17 seconds of the throw-in set us up for a cracker. When Cork answered with a goal of their own not long after it was clear that we were going to see both teams at their best. It was the sort of game that

the Clare public pined for all year and a timely reminder as to how good these hurlers we have currently are.

Despite what some people will tell you though, with hurling, it is never just as simple as attitude and desire. The Clare management deserve credit for the switches that they made which got the best out of our best players. The most notable change to the starting line-up was deploying Tony Kelly corner forward.

Tony started the game brilliantly and was a constant scoring threat. When he gets possession close to the opposition goal he is at his most dangerous and forcing him further up the field was a game changer for Clare. They

did move him out to the half forward line where he ran onto a beautiful pass from Duggan and put the ball top bins past Nash.

The use of Kelly close to the Cork goal was a stark contrast to his positioning in our last two games and it was a move that really paid dividends for Clare.

Another inspired decision was to put Peter Duggan at centre forward. As a result of Peter’s physical presence, he was able to negate Ellis’ effect on the game. Ellis had served as a great launchpad in Cork’s two wins to this point as his accuracy of passing set up many attacks. Peter never let him get comfortable in the position, while Ellis was drawn out to the 65-metre line to

mark Peter as he was a constant scoring threat. As a result, this left room in front of our full forward line which was exploited by the lads inside.

The addition of Jason McCarthy at midfield also proved a positive move. Jason’s physicality and aggression were important for Clare to get a foothold in the game. His partnership with Colm Galvin brought out the best in Colm who went on to give a man of the match display. Colm’s use of the ball was exceptional as he set up many Clare attacks and got some good scores of his own.

What was particularly impressive was how composed Clare, and particularly Colm, were when the monsoon like rain started to

fall. Clare continued to play great hurling during this spell and worked the ball through the lines effectively. The rain was so heavy that it was hard to see at times not to mind hurl, but these lads managed it.

While this performance was a timely boost for Clare hurling, ultimately, it was irrelevant in terms of progressing to the All-Ireland series. We were reliant on Limerick to get a win in Thurles against Tipperary. It didn’t help that Limerick were through already and had the luxury of being able to rest some of their best hurlers. Limerick went with the sort of team selection that deserves a Biddy Early like curse from any witches we have left standing in Clare. Jokes aside Limerick are right to only worry about what they believe is best for their own progression and we can only look to ourselves in Clare as to what might have been. Limerick may find that losing that game will stunt momentum and regret it going forward in the competition though.

Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor put down a tough week after the performance in Limerick and will have taken a lot of criticism. Much was made afterwards as to what their future with Clare will be. In my opinion, there has been clear progress made since they took the job with performances in Munster massively improved.

They were only a point away from an All-Ireland final last year and got this team back playing a good brand of attacking hurling.

It is clear too that they have the backing of the players after the performance at the weekend when their backs were to the wall. Whatever they decide after reflecting on the year, they have contributed massively to Clare hurling and should be held in high regard by the public.

ÓISÍN Moore has had a major win in Limerick where Ennis Tennis Club were represented in five categories, with Róisín emerging as the only winner.

Róisín Moore competed in an adult tennis tournament, Limerick Senior Open 2019 in Catholic Institute Tennis Club and despite only being 16 years old, she won the title in the top ‘Premier/Category 1’ Ladies Singles Tennis Champion 2019 .

What makes this extra special is Róisín was the youngest winner of this title at 14 years old and

has won it each year over the last three consecutive years which is a major achievement for this young competitor.

Sarah McSwiney, Club Captain presented Róisín with an Ennis Tennis & Badminton Club Hoodie to mark her win, and commented “We’re proud to honour Róisín’s achievements with this small gesture. She has accomplished a lot already and we look forward to celebrating more wins with her in the future. Ennis Tennis Club is delighted to support her and wish her continued success”.

were well represented on Finals Day Well done to Subbarami Reddy Lella who was finalist in Grades 4 & 5 Men’s Singles, Dhanya Pillai & Shauna Woods who were finalists in Grade 5 women’s doubles and Angela O’Sullivan who was finalist in Grade 6 mixed doubles.

With Wimbledon fast approaching Ennis Tennis Club would like to invite all adults 4-5pm and juniors 3-4pm to an open day and try your hand at tennis free of charge on Sunday 23rd June, rackets provided just wear runners turn up and have a bit of craic.

LL-IRELAND champions Cork killed off the challenge of Clare in the opening round of the senior camogie championship with an injury time brace of 2-03 on Saturday evening.

Once again a lack of scoring threat would hinder Clare’s cause as they fell to a 19 point defeat to Cork in their first outing of the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland senior camogie championship. Being four points adrift at half-time was a positive for Clare, however they had only five points on the board with Katrina Mackey goaling for Cork on 18 minutes. Unlike the conclusion of the game itself, Clare finished the first half well with

captain Laura McMahon and frees from Mairead Scanlon reducing the gap to two scores.

Paudie Murray’s Rebellettes upped their game in the second half, outscoring Clare 8-2 in the space of 24 minutes. The visitors drove the knife in scoring 2-03 in injury time to get their three-in-arow bid off to a winning start. Next weekend, Clare travel to Meath.

Meanwhile, Tipperary were crowned Munster intermediate ladies football champions following a heavy defeat of Clare at Cappamore on Sunday, winning on a scoreline of 0-20 to Clare’s 1-4.

It was a case of dejavu for Clare who have fallen to their Tipp counterparts in the Munster decider for the third time in four years.
