ER LINGUS’ decision to shut down their base at Shannon Airport has prompted an Ennis representative to seek that all efforts be poured into expanding Ryanair’s potential. On Tuesday, Aer Lingus made the shock announcement that it was to shut its cabin crew base at Shannon Airport where it employs 126 workers, this is comprised of 81 cabin crew and 45 ground crew. Proposed redundancies are to take effect from the first of July for the cabin crew while the ground
staff will remain laid off. The decision of Aer Lingus to shut its base has been described as devastating and comes eighteen months after it announced new routes to Paris and Barcelona which were to begin in May 2020. However the onset of COVID-19 in the interval scuppered these plans.
