A

N ENNIS resident has warned that the Taliban are more dangerous now than they have been before.

Sayed Farid Sanai was forced to flee Afghanistan after attempts on his life by the Taliban due to his role as a prominent journalist and broadcaster in his native country. He has lived in Direct Provision in Ennis since November 2019.

With the Taliban taking control, it has heightened his concern for his wife, son, mother, family and friends who are still in Afghanistan.

He said, “I can’t do anything for my family, my relatives or friends, I’m very worried about them and I can’t sleep all the night. I feel I lost everything in this world, I feel I’ve lost all the world. Both of my knees are shaking with my country facing this type of a problem, I can’t believe what is going on there, this is a very big and bad situation for our people”.

“It scares me to think of the Taliban coming back and stopping girls from being educated and working outside the home.”

DO not consume notice which impacted up to 7,500 customers on the Shannon and Sixmilebridge public water supply has been lifted.

Irish Water confirmed on Tuesday afternoon following consultation with the HSE that the notice was lifted with immediate effect. Up to 7,500 customers were impacted by the notice which was in place for a period of 10 days.

Cratloe, Sixmilebridge, Kilmurry, Kilkishen and Quin were among the areas affected after high levels of manganese were detected in the water.

Duane O’Brien of Irish Water acknowledged the impact the notice had on the communities. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience. Our drinking water compliance and operational experts worked hard to resolve this issue as quickly and as safely as possible and we endeavoured to keep stakeholders updated at every stage of the process.

“We are grateful to the media, elected representatives and members of the public who shared the information. We would also like to thank Clare County Council and HSE for their input and support throughout the process”.

FORMER Afghanistan news anchor who had to flee his native country over attempts on his life by the Taliban has warned that terrorism will spread to other countries if the escalating situation is not put under control.

Ennis based, Sayed Farid Sanai has been assisting RTÉ this week with their coverage of the harrowing scenes from Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, the Taliban met their first street protests since their takeover of Afghanistan. A public display of dissent in the north-eastern city of Jalalabad was met by an overwhelming use of force with Taliban soldiers firing into the crowd and beating both protesters and journalists.

The Taliban, fighting since their 2001 ouster to expel foreign forces, seized Kabul on Sunday. US forces running Kabul Airport had to stop flights on Monday after thousands of frightened Afghans swamped the facility looking for a flight out. Flights resumed yesterday as the situation came under

control.

Thirty two year old Farid was one of the most recognised news anchors on Afghanistan television. He led the 6 O’Clock news on Khurshid TV but was forced to flee his country in October 2019 after gun and bomb attempts on his life by the Taliban. Since November of that year, he has lived at The Clare Lodge in Ennis as a Direct Provision resident.

He said this week that thousands of lives are at risk along with homes, businesses and women’s rights in his native country. He warned that without immediate intervention, other terrorist groups will seize their opportunity. “Terrorism will increase in different parts of this world if we don’t stop terrorism in Afghanistan”.

“What happened in Afghanistan, I cannot believe it that the President put our people in this very bad situation, as an Afghan citizen I cannot forgive him, I think he sold our country and our people to Taliban, Afghan people never accept Taliban control”.

His wife, son and mother remain in Afghanistan, he has been in contact with them, other relatives and friends this week. “The situation is very bad and dangerous”. Farid remains very worried for their safety, he has appealed to the Taoiseach Micheál Martin

On Wednesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is helping to remove 25 Irish citizens and eight dependents from Afghanistan. It’s understood that the 33 people are located in different areas.

“It scares me to think of the Taliban coming back and stopping girls from being educated and working outside the home. The Taliban have to meet the standards of the 21st century and accept the demands of the younger generation. But the current oppression by the Taliban in Afghanistan worries me. They are much more dangerous than before. It is hard to imagine that man is so cruel and dangerous. They do not live in 2021. Their thoughts and ideology are not compatible with any religion,” Farid concluded.

AWARD-WINNING East Clare oral historian, Tomás Mac Conmara is to release his latest book this coming September.

Following 17 years of research, ‘The Scariff Martyrs, War, Murder and Memory in East Clare’ has now gone to print and is set to be released in mid-September.

In 2016, the Tuamgraney man was commended by President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, as one of seven recipients who have made outstanding contributions to culture over the last 100 years for a Comhaltas Forógra na Cásca Centenary Award.

He began documenting oral tradition and folklore in the townland of Ballymalone in east Clare as a teenager and is now recognised as one of the leading oral historians in the country.

From 2008 to 2014, he led the foundation and development of Cuimhneamh an Chláir (Memories of Clare).

A 20 year collection of his work, ‘The Time of the Tans’ was published in 2019 and was based on over 400 personal recordings with

older people, focused on the Irish War of Independence. Tomás had written four other books prior to this.

Interestingly, ex Argentinian rugby captain, Agustín Pichot has already voiced his praise for the upcoming book on The Scariff Martyrs.

An inductee into the IRB Hall of Fame, Pichot reached out to Tomás after reading ‘The Time of the Tans’.

“Mac Conmara’s philosophy of history rests on a deep understanding, the results of years of dedication.

“He uses memory to shine a light on the human experience from the ground up and with a level of detail only knowable to someone who has all but entered that past to retrieve it. Such understanding makes his work truly global.

“As an Argentinian, I can see in his writing, the history of my own country. Mac Conmara’s work on The Scariff Martyrs is human, evocative and full of understanding.

You can feel the tension, the wildness, the energy and the fear,” the most selected Argentine player for the Barbarians stated.

National Development Sale likely for Plan review can help solve Lufthansa Technik Broadford’s water woes

by PÁRAIC McMAHON CONFIDENCE is growing that Lufthansa Technik will not be closed and instead will be sold.

In June, fears for over 300 jobs in Shannon came to light with Lufthansa’s future put into doubt.

This came when it emerged that Lufthansa Technik were to carry out a strategic review of its Shannon operations.

Among the options put on the table include a restructuring of its Irish operation, the closure of the plant and the selling of the business.

Senior political figures including Tanáiste Leo Varadkar (FG), Minister for Finance Pascal Donohoe (FG) and Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath (FF) were notified of the company’s position when these options were put on the table.

A sale was reported to be the most likely outcome in June and this remains the current feeling in Shannon.

Prior to COVID-19, over 500 persons were employed

by Lufthansa Technik in Shannon.

However the onset of the pandemic resulted in this figure dropping to in or around the 300 mark.

An operating loss of €318m was recorded by Lufthansa last year, this compares with a €403m operating profit from 2019.

Combined sales of €65m in 2020 were recorded by the German firm’s Shannon business, this was a 28 percent drop on the €90m in sales a year previously.

Discussions are ongoing between the company and an interested party with hopes for a sale remaining high.

Lufthansa Technik specialises in the overhaul of shortand medium-range aircraft.

The services offered include basic overhauls and annual checks on the Boeing 737 Classic und Next Generation, 757, 767 and MD-80

types and the Airbus A320 family of aircraft.

The aircraft overhauls are carried out in a 12,300 square meters hangar offering five parking positions.

In a further, approximately 4,600 square meters hangar, up to two aircraft can be painted at a time.

Sister company, Lufthansa Technik Turbines Shannon has affirmed its confidence for its future in Shannon, a year on from cutting staff numbers.

“As a result of the slow but consistent recovery of the market, LTTS is currently evaluating its resources with a view to building capacity further.

Production levels at Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon Ltd have been adversely affected by the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on aviation, and the company is availing of Irish government supports but can confirm that there are no plans to reduce the headcount at LTTS”.

DEDICATED funding mechanism needs to be put in place to ensure villages in Clare have adequate, up-to-date sewerage systems, one of the county’s Oireachtas members

have said.

Up to 52 towns and villages in Clare are currently not deemed as having adequate wastewater infrastructure and are thus hindered from development.

Presently, Irish Water’s capital investment programme is focused on larger population centres meaning that many of the villages around the country are left with aged infrastructure that cannot meet the demands of the community.

Clare TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) detailed that he has been in contact with Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien (FF) and his staff urging them to use the National Development Plan review as a mechanism within which to make a new funding provision for installing sewerage infrastructure in small villages.

Deputy Crowe stated, “At the moment, far

too many villages in Clare and throughout Ireland fall between the stools in that they are too small to be funded under Irish Water’s capital works programme.

“In a lot of these cases, homes are connected to septic tanks but there are instances in Clare where there is no sewerage infrastructure whatsoever connected to homes meaning that sewerage flushed down the toilet goes into the local drainage system.

“In the 21st century this is unacceptable, when one considers that this raw sewerage could be leaking into nearby water supplies that is ultimately consumed by people,” the Meelick native said.

Projects can be bumped up the list as part of the review, he believed. “I am urging Minister O’Brien to provide a new funding mechanism for sewerage facilities in small villages.

There are a number of villages in Clare which could potentially avail of such a scheme including Broadford, Cooraclare, Carrigaholt and Doolin.

“If a scheme is devised on a pilot basis it’s most likely that Broadford would be among the first to be considered given that it is shovel ready and land for a pump station and treatment unit have already been purchased. I will be strongly making this point to the Minister and I look forward to positive engagement with him on this matter,” Crowe concluded.

Trip of a lifetime for Peter PÁRAIC MCMAHON

ILRUSH will be the starting point for an attempt by Peter Lawless to become the first Irish person to solo navigate around the world.

Originally from Limerick, Peter currently resides in Annascaul in Kerry but learned how to sail in Mountshannon at the age of four on an optimist dinghy. The lessons from East Clare will be put into practice as he takes off on an unforgettable journey.

He expects the trip will take approximately eight months but has outlined that it could take 10 months. Peter will sail solo and unassisted non-stop from Ireland and back via the five great capes.

A sextant and paper charts will be used by Peter as his primary navigation tools. His yacht wax wing is a Rival 41, a standard production offshore cruising yacht that he upgraded for the challenge.

On Saturday, he will depart Kilrush Marina to begin the trip. He

is confident his respect for the sea will stand to him over the coming months.

“You would have to have a healthy fear of the ocean and I do, I’ve an exceptional boat that I picked purposefully for this challenge, she is an incredible sea boat, I’ve the best of equipment, very good knowledge, I wouldn’t go if I was terrified because it wouldn’t be a good idea, a healthy fear is good and a healthy fear of the sea will keep you alive”.

He added, “The fear factor isn’t a big deal to me, I don’t think you could do something like this if you were afraid of it, what I would be afraid of is equipment failure”.

Breaking his mast or losing a rudder were listed by Peter as the two items that would represent a worst case scenario. However, the fact he is not under time pressures limits the risks involved, he felt. “I’m not racing, I’m not trying to break speed records, I will have good weather systems so will hopefully be able to avoid the worst of a storm”.

While the notion of the trip may sound unusual, it is something Peter has been hoping to do for a long time and was inspired

by his father.

“As my Dad got older, he started doing off-shore sailing over and back to the States, he went off and did a circumnavigation and came back in 1996 at the age of 70 after a three year circumnavigation, he spent a winter in New Zealand before he continued on the following year, I don’t plan to do that. I was 16 when my Dad started long distance off-shore sailing, that was great encouragement for me,” he recalled.

Preparation has brought with it a 14 hour workload per day, a big aspect of this is food preparation. “Cathy my wife is helping me with the food prep, the food prep alone is huge, we’ll count out all the spoons of coffee and bring enough for 10 months,” he quipped.

“I’ll be moving all the time unless there is no wind. It is unlikely that I will fish. I will have fishing gear but I don’t expect to fish, I would also be worried about species and not recognising what I would be eating”.

Larger than life Dun Purcell passes on to his eternal rest PÁRAIC MCMAHON

IDESPREAD sadness has been expressed following the death of Dun Purcell from Feakle.

Regarded as one of the biggest characters in East Clare, Dun died on Saturday aged 98. He lived his life to the full and did so through a Civil War, a World War and an Economic War. In February of this year following an interview with The Clare Echo after overcoming COVID-19, Dun lifted the spirits of the county and later the nation when Morning Ireland picked up on the story and were treated to a musical rendition.

Prior to COVID-19, he had been living on his own at Bauregegaun Cottage and was driving up until the month that he contracted the virus. He also survived tuberculosis in his early twenties, after overcoming TB his doctor predicted that Dun would live a very long life.

He was honoured by Bluebird Care

as one of the finest examples of positive ageing. He was also shortlisted as a nominee for Clare Older Person of the Year in recognition for running the Looking Forward Group for the past 15 years.

Beautiful music was a strong component of Dun’s funeral mass in Feakle on Tuesday. Fr Harry Bohan said it was possible for many people to write a book on the man that would have turned 99 in October. “Dun lived long but he never grew old and I can say that for certain, he never grew old”.

“People who gave their lives for Ireland influenced Dun’s life a lot but he himself believed in living for Ireland and living for the community, he did it well,” Bohan a native of Feakle said. “Dun was a proud Irishman, a proud Clare man but above all he was a proud Feakle man and the local meant a lot to him”.

A letter from St Joseph’s Secondary School students in Tulla acknowledging Dun’s involvement in Living Scenes, an initiative that saw the older generation work with students was referenced. “His visits to the school were legendary, his lack of political correctness went down

well with the students. He loved meeting young people, he was selfish in that he would think they would be around a lot longer than some of the people he was friends with,” Matt Purcell recalled.

Matt also observed how Dun kept everyone on their toes including by ignoring the queue at The Sherwood Inn and instead sitting in beside people who were having meals on their own. Tess Purcell read aloud ‘Dun’s Time’, a poem written about her father’s final few weeks.

Members of the Purcell family were overwhelmed with the level of support, goodwill, sandwiches, rhubarb tarts, text messages and phone calls received since Dun’s death, Denis told the congregation.

“When Dun was low and I suppose his mind was exhausted all you had to do was ask him a question about Feakle or anyone in it and Dun came right back to us, he was there and back, he loved it and everyone in it, past and present,” Denis added. He spoke of the countless friendships made by his father due to car breakdowns and why golden wonders were among the few items that Dun believed were worth paying “a little bit over the odds for”.

Trauma for Ennis store worker in knife incident

STAFF at an Ennis shop had to contend with a traumatic incident after one worker was threatened with a knife.

At approximately 6:05pm last Tuesday, a lone male entered the Gala Shop on Cloughleigh Road in Ennis wearing a balaclava over his face and carrying a knife.

He demanded the staff member to open the cash

register but he couldn’t open it – this male then took a number of packets of cigarettes and left on a bike in the direction of the Lahinch Road.

“This was a traumatic incident for the staff member but he wasn’t physically injured,” Crime Prevention Officer at Ennis Garda Station, Triona Brooks stated.

Later in the same evening Gardaí from Ennis Garda Station executed a search warrant at a house in Ennis and a male in his late twenties was arrested and detained at Ennis Garda Station.

On Thursday (August 12th), he was brought in custody before Ennis District Court and was remanded in custody to Limerick Prison.

CLARE woman who helped to improve living conditions for thousands of people in South Africa and played a pivotal role in translating the fight against HIV and AIDS into practical action has died.

Lissycasey born, Sr Ethel Normoyle died peacefully on Monday in the loving care of the Doctors and staff of Milford Care Centre, just one week on from her 77th birthday.

She was a member of the Little Company of Mary since 1963. Not long after arriving in South Africa in 1972, Ethel was subjected to an attempted kidnapping during the Apartheid years. This incident strengthened her thirst for justice and led to her opposing racial discrimination in the country.

In a previous interview, she recalled of the incident, “I did not expect the cruelty that I was faced with. I was threatened, spat on, arrested, stabbed and an attempted kidnap – the latter was what frightened me most as when I would close the door in the morning, I had a fear that I would not return”.

She added, “I will never forget the day that our beloved Nelson Mandela took the presidential oath in parliament. I jumped from my chair as I watched it on television and said to myself ‘this is a point of reference that we will never go back to where we’ve come from’. It was worth fighting for”.

Missionvale Care Centre was founded by Sr Ethel in 1988, its foundation came after Sr Normoyle set up a school and basic clinic under a tree, which has since resulted in a fully integrated community centre dedicated to the fight against poverty and HIV and AIDS. It also includes pre-primary and primary schools that provide education, hope and safe playgrounds for some 60

children, this centre is also home to about 500 orphans and vulnerable children.

With the help of more than 180 overseas volunteers, the Missionvale Care Centre has built a resource centre, which houses all the health initiatives, with plans underway to incorporate a day hospice.

In 1996, she followed in the footsteps of former President Nelson Mandela as a recipient of the Tipperary Peace Award. In 2008, she was invited as an Eminent Person to the State of the Nation Address in Parliament. She was also honoured by former President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe with the Order of the Grand Counsellor of the Baobab: Silver, one of the country’s top awards, for her excellent service to society.

After receiving a lung cancer diagnosis earlier this year, Sr Ethel returned to Ireland to receive palliative care surrounded by her friends and family. In a heartfelt letter to the community of Missionvale just before she left, she said that the past 34 years had been the happiest years of her life.

Ennis broadcaster, Colm Flynn filmed a programme on Sr Ethel in 2012. He stated, “Over the space of 50 years she worked like an angel, helping the poorest of the poor in South Africa during the dark apartheid years. And despite being shunned by many, spat on and threatened by the police, she continued to live with the black community and built a remarkable school and healthcare center in the impoverished township of ‘Missionvale’. She was visited by the Queen of England and Mother Teresa who marveled at how she was caring for those most in need”.

Her funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Lissycasey on Thursday afternoon. She is predeceased by her parents John & Vera and brothers Val & Kieran. She is sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Máire (Talty), Claire (Corley) and Geraldine (Cummins), brother Jerome, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and extended family members.

ATRICK Gavin’s fight for a Primary Medical Certificate (PMC) for his daughter Isabelle continues, with the case still yet to be heard in court.

In May, The Clare Echo reported on the Carrigaholt man’s battle with the HSE and 10-year campaign trail in what has so far, been an unsuccessful bid to change legislation that would allow his daughter to obtain the certificate that shows that “a person is a severely disabled and permanently disabled person for the purposes of Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers Regulations 1994”.

‘Data Centres should not be a priority’

by CIAN O’BROIN AN ONLINE webinar concerning the newly proposed €1.2bn Ennis Data Centre has issued the stark cry to Government to “prioritise decarbonisation and not to be prioritising data centres.”

Hosted by Futureproof Clare on Monday, over 70 attendees logged on to hear keynote speakers Brid Smith TD (PBP), Professor Barry McMullin of DCU, Pat Brodie of Concordia University and Aideen O’Dochartaigh from the Not Here Not Anywhere Campaign.

Labelled as ‘Ennis Data Centre – A climate disaster waiting to happen’, the discussion centred around the threat to energy security and policy issues surrounding the building of data centres, which it was claimed will take 70 per cent of our peak demand of electricity by 2030.

On the local impact, it was flagged that the proposed 58 Ha. site would exceed Moneypoint’s total emissions for 2019 and would be the new twelfth largest polluter in Ireland, increasing yearly Irish emissions by one per cent.

This in stark contrast to the Government’s Climate Bill 2021 proposal to reduce carbon emissions by 51 per cent by 2030.

Professor Barry McMullin said: “Decarbonising this stuff is not something that you can do overnight. Trying to achieve this reduction against the background of increasing absolute en-

It is inconceivable that we can achieve this. It’s madness to imagine that we can expand total energy use while decarbonising and that’s what new data centres represent”.

He highlighted that between 2005 and 2019, total fossil fuel use reduced by 17 per cent, admonishing that a proposed reduction of 51 per cent proposed in the next 10 years would be next to impossible. He also likened expanding energy use while still decarbonising to “trying to go down an up-escalator”.

Dublin South-Central TD Brid Smith remarked that she was impressed by the support amongst Clare people. “It is incompatible with our energy needs, energy production and our ambitions to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and water as a natural resource which will be used up to an extreme extent by these data centres”.

ALAN QUIGLEY (FLAGMOUNT): “Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t think there is anywhere that you can get to in Ennis without having to go through the main streets. I think it’s great for the people to have the freedom to walk up and down it and enjoy the space rather than watching cars go by and having pollution as well as watching themselves going down the street and cramming themselves onto small pavements. With regards to businesses, I can understand that HGVs and big vehicles may have to come in to deliver their products, but then again the road is open early in the morning for that to happen. The amount of parking that is available here on O’Connell Street, is maybe maximum 15 to 20. I honestly don’t think that is detrimental to anybody’s business”.

CAROLINE HANRAHAN (ENNIS): “I think it is good that pedestrianisation is being lifted as it’s very difficult for people in terms of parking. They can’t get close to shops. I find myself, now that I am walking, it’s great. For the buzz of the town itself, it’s better to have the cars going through. There isn’t enough parking either, on the outskirts of town. There are older people that like to be dropped at doors. There are times when I am not as mobile as I should be, so I would find it better to be dropped in and make my way. Personally, I miss the cars.”

EDESTRIANISATION measures in Ennis town centre are to be eased from the end of August and will be lifted entirely at the end of September.

A meeting of the Temporary Covid-19 Ennis Town Centre Mobility Plan taskforce was held on Wednesday where the current plans were reviewed.

Citing the current public health guidelines, children returning to school and facilitating outdoor dining, a new exit strategy was agreed.

As a result, the current pedestrianisation of the town centre

will be lifted except from 11am to 2pm (Monday to Friday), 11am to 6pm until September 30th (Saturday and Sunday) and Lower Parnell St where the current road closure will apply until September 30th.

Wednesday was the final meeting of the taskforce, a spokesperson for Clare County Council confirmed.

Social distancing during the pandemic was referenced by local authority officials over the past 17 months as the reason for the introduction of the pedestrianisation.

In April, a poll among readers of The Clare Echo found that 69% of the public wished to see pedestrianisation remain in place while 49% of the business community were against a long-term plan for pedestrianisation being put in

place.

Businesses were mixed on the potential of making the town pedestrianised permanently with a section of traders seeking the reopening of the streets while others praised the changes it brought to navigation and footfall across the town centre.

Separately, in preparation for the development of a Local Area Plan for Ennis, Clare County Council has said it looks forward to engaging with the wider community as part of the Ennis Mobility Plan, which will examine all modes of transport for the sustainable movement of people within Ennis and its environs.

The formulation of this mobility plan is a requirement under the National Development Plan and will inform the Local Area Plan as well as future opportunities.

CAITLIN EARLE (LISSYCASEY): “I think the pedestrianisation was a good idea because the streets and the pavements themselves are very narrow. It allows for social distancing and even before COVID it was much easier as there was more space to walk. I think it should stay. I think it has been very successful”.

PADDY LANE (ENNIS): “I can only talk about my own situation but it’s dangerous to lift pedestrianisation. When paths are in good condition, it’s grand but every so often one gets loose and if I hit my toe on it, I’m down off my feet. I’m not the only disabled person in town. To try and enact social distancing on the square going down to Parnell Street when its very narrow at Patrick Bourkes is very difficult. Parnell Street, when it’s finished, will be perfect for the likes of me. It will be like a skating rink, it will be grand. I love walking down the town with no cars. The most dangerous thing is electric cars. They are behind you and you don’t know it. They have to beep to let you know. I would like to see from 9am to 3pm pedestrianised, just on the three streets. Cars are coming through and not stopping anyways. The parking is gone.”

TOMMY MOLLOY (ENNIS): “I think pedestrianisation is a good idea but especially the way things are now it’s a good idea. People can walk down the streets and not worry about traffic. People that are elderly or in wheelchairs can walk down the streets and have a bit of comfort. It’s a good idea to have it pedestrianised. Maybe they should think about doing it one or two days per week or maybe on the weekends. I think that local representatives should work with the shops on the main thoroughfare of O’ Connell Street, Parnell Street and Abbey Street. I think it will bring more people into town”.

GRAINNE MARTIN (ENNIS): “I am in total agreement that pedestrianisation should happen. For me as a parent of two little ones, having a pram and a three-and-a-half-year-old, it has been really successful in allowing me to move safely along the streets.

There is no room on the side streets. Ennis sometimes reminds me of Galway, with the small medieval type streets. Galway have pedestrianisation for years now and it has been successful. All I’m afraid of really is for my two little kiddies and not having enough room. I think it has allowed me to do more window shopping. When you are coming in and there are cars coming, you just go to the shop you need to and get out again because it is so busy on the streets. It has been great; it has allowed me to go into shops that I wouldn’t have gone into before. This is giving people business.”

Ennis businesses divided

by CIAN O’BROIN ENNIS businesses are divided on the decision to remove temporary pedestrianisation from the town.

Peter Moylan of Ennis Cash Company stressed that it was a big welcome at just the right time for the 140-year-old establishment. He added that it would be interesting to see the affect that COVID restrictions as well as the elimination of car parking spaces has had on businesses.

“We have felt semi-strangled here all along as our much more mature market are dependent on cars. They don’t want to walk long distances or carry sizeable items,” he stated. The Ennis native described the lifting of pedestrianisation as “the best news I’ve had all year”.

Sharing his disappointment on the Taskforce’s decision was Tadg Collins of Collins Jewellers on O’Connell Street. He asserted that business own-

ers must share the same opinion as their customer, noting that all of his customers love it.

“In September when school are back and three of them are out on lunch, how does a lady with a buggy get up the town along the narrow footpaths when car access is limited. In a business, customers are always right and none of mine have complained about pedestrianisation,” he told The Clare Echo.

With over 40 years in business on O’Connell Street, Mary Kelly flagged how unsuccessful pedestrianisation was during the severe lockdown.

She claimed that it was linked to anti-social behaviour including open drinking as well as human excrement being left overnight.

She believed a weekend only pedestrianisation plan was the way forward. “You cannot install pedestrianisation in a town that is crying out for parking and the council has failed us on this time and time again”.

Heritage Week Ennistymon Book 2021 events Town Festival A WIDE range of events continue across Co Clare until Sunday as part of Heritage Week, writes Páraic McMahon.

National Heritage Week 2021 is focused on opening the door to heritage and getting as many people involved in heritage as possible.

Over 40 events are taking place across the county, many of the projects have been showcased online.

Mapping County Clare is a video exploring the maps of the county and looks at 50 maps featuring Clare from the 16th century to the present day.

Biodiversity is to the fore where the Ballymacraven River enters the Inagh River before it flows into Liscannor Bay with participants led on a voyage of discovery through the site.

This event is one of four similar events including Ode to Lickeen Lake, Linking Water and Time; Water Trees and Bogland on the Upper Inagh River; and Clondorney Lake Family Fun Day. An evocative exhibition inspired by the holy wells of the Burren will be presented by composer Fiona Linnane and photographer Claire O’Rorke. The exhibition at the Burren College of Art runs until Sunday and is open daily from 10am to 5pm with admission free.

In Kilrush, there will be tours of the Turret Lodge from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday. Tours will be limited but booking is not necessary.

Turret Lodge is a notable landmark in the West Clare town controlling access between the town and the Vandeleur Estate demesne.

Given that Kilrush House, the home of the Vandeleur family, burned down in 1897, the surviving lodges, walled garden and stable block have added significance as surviving links to the town’s past heritage.

Local booksellers at Salmon Bookshop and Banner Books will be joined for this, the tenth annual festival, by a dozen or so booksellers who will set up at venues across the town.

Antiquarian and specialist booksellers will set up stall alongside shops that cater for all interests and age groups. Shops open on Saturday from 10am until 6pm and Sunday from 10.30 to 5.30. Strict covid guidelines on mask wearing and numbers in shops will be followed at all times. There is also a programme of events taking place during the weekend as follows: On Saturday 28th from 2pm - 3.30pm, Salmon Poetry celebrates 40 years of publishing poetry and literary nonfiction with poetry and music in the beautiful Salmon Bookshop walled garden, Parliament St. Attendance is free but numbers are limited to 25.

At 6.30pm, Joe Power will talk on his two recent books Clare and the War of Independence and Clare and the Civil war. The talk will be in the Teach Ceoil numbers are limited due to covid restrictions to 25 please contact Banner Books on (065) 707 1372.

On Sunday 29th from 2pm - 3.30pm, ‘The Edge of Moher and Beyond’. A talk by Martina McCarthy with music by Liam O’Brien. Folk Festival cancelled

by PÁRAIC McMAHON FOR the second year in a row, the Doolin Folk Festival has been cancelled.

Organisers of the festival said the decision not to proceed was based on public safety and comes at a cost of €1.5m to the local economy. They outlined that the announcement was made “with a heavy heart and much frustration due to ongoing uncertainty around live music events”.

Earlier this year, the Festival was deferred from its usual date in June to September with the hope that restrictions would have eased to allow for it to be held.

ernment was criticised by organisers. “The government have promised a roadmap by the end of August but we have no idea of what will be in it and unfortunately we have to make a call on it. As it stands we are allowed to have 200 people seated outdoors. We cannot run the Doolin Folk Festival under these restrictions. It just wouldn’t be the Doolin Folk Festival that everybody knows and loves. We would rather wait until restrictions are gone and do it properly at a time when each one of us can dance and singalong and hug a stranger with abandon.

We live in hope that the Doolin Folk Festival will be back in June 2022”.

by Ennistymon based artist John Lillis called Dial a Seanachaí.

Clare Sands has been appointed to glór. Clare has already begun her residency in the venue, and she will develop new work collaboratively with Steve Cooney and & Liadain Ní Bhraonáin, culminating in a live concert premier in glór this November.

Also in November, glór is delighted to return to one of the venue’s flagship events, MÓRglór.

Music Network returns with collaboration featuring vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird, harpist and sound artist Úna Monaghan, and cellist Kevin Murphy as glór’s first live in theatre event this year on Sept 8. MID the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, there have been renewed calls to end Shannon Airport’s use

by US troops.

For close to two decades, Shannon Airport has been used as a stopover and fuelling stop for tens of thousands of US troops. In 2020, approximately 75,000 troops used the airport. In 2019, in the full year, the figure was 93,852 and, in 2018, it was 86,653.

There is no cost to hosting the flights, the Department of Foreign Affairs told the Public Accounts Committee in June.

(SF) described the flights as “the shame of Shannon”. “Irish governments have turned a blind eye to the practice of rendition, the transferring of prisoners to so-called third countries for interrogation and torture, a clear breach of our human rights law,” she stated.

Assurances that the military planes carry no arms, ammunition or explosives were never challenged, the Kilrush woman outlined.

“The human cost and instability of the invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq over the past 20 years will last for generations. The horrific scenes and escalating humanitarian crises we are now witnessing are yet more examples of that.

“It is a horrific situation and highlights that it is high time that Irish governments stopped facil-

itating these reckless foreign invasions, and ended the shame of Shannon, an Irish civilian airport, being used by the US military. We

want our airport, and our respect as a neutral country, back”.

Prior to the 2020 General Election, Wexford TD, Bren-

dan Howlin (LAB) said the party would push to end of Shannon Airport for US military planes.

Galway West TD, Catherine Connolly (IND) questioned Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney (FG) on the matter in Dáil Éireann last year asking if he planned to engage with US President Joe Biden regarding the use of the International Airport.

Coveney responded by saying it was a “long-standing practice” and was fully consistent with Ireland’s position of neutrality.

Road markings to be done before school term begins

OFFICIALS within Clare County Council are confident road markings at the roundabout outside one of Shannon’s two secondary schools will be renewed before staff and students return to school.

An appeal to renew road markings around roundabouts “in particular the black and yellow markings” at the roundabout outside St Patrick’s Comprehensive School was lodged by Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF)

at a recent meeting of the Shannon Municipal District.

The proposal was seconded by fellow Shannon representative, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND).

Senior executive engineer, Tom Mellett in response said the works would be included in the current works programme for their contractor.

“I am estimating completion of the current works list before the end of August,” he stated.

HE death took place last week of former Clare hurler and well known golfer Bernie Hoey, Newpark, Ennis.

Pre-deceased by his son Ger, a key figure in the St. Josephs, Doora-Barefield Clare, Munster and All-Ireland senior winning team of 1998/’99, Bernie was a leading light on the hurling fields in the 1950s and early 1960s.

A member of the Clooney club, he helped St. Flannans College to Harty Cup glory in 1952. In that campaign the famed Ennis nursery defeated the holders and favourites Thurles CBS. They beat Limerick CBS in the semi-final and went on to account for St. Finbarrs from Cork in a final believed to have been amongst the best the competition has produced. His performances with the college team earned him a call up to the Clare minor side. He went on to captain and win a Fitzgibbon cup with UCD in 1957/58.

He was part of the Clare senior panel from 1955 to 1961. He was a member of the Clare senior team which played Kilkenny in Wembley in 1958 and that same year he was full back on the Clare side which lost to Cork in the Munster senior championship.

He followed the fortunes of Clooney Quin and his adopted parish of St. Josephs Doora-Barefield and Clare throughout his life and was particularly proud of the involvement of his sons in successes achieved by both club and county while also taking great pride in the performances of his daughters in camogie and ladies football and of the golf successes of his son John.

He was particularly proud when St. Josephs won the Clare intermediate camogie championship in 2015 as the team which beat Éire Óg in the final included his daughter Sarah and his grand daughter Caoimhe.

Bernie was a valued member of the Clare senior hurlers supporters committee and played a key role in the very successful annual golf classic run by this group in the late 1990s.

He was an outstanding golfer and served the Ennis club in a variety of roles over many years. He was club captain,

He played senior cup and Barton shield for the club and won two Knox cup (the club’s prestigious singles matchplay competition) titles, An indication of his prowess as a golfer can be gleaned from the fact that he qualified for and played in the South of Ireland amateur championship when his life long friend Noel Pyne, a 50 time South of Ireland competitor, was his caddy.

Bernie also managed a number of Ennis golf club teams including the club’s mixed foursomes team which won the All-Ireland title with his wife Bridget a key member of the side.

He provided invaluable assistance to the St. Josephs club during the development of the club’s playing facilities at Gurteen.

He is survived by his wife Bridget, sons John and David, daughters Maeve and Sarah, brother Michael, sisters Brigid and Mary and extended family.

Following requiem Mass at the Church of Our Lady in Roslevan on Thursday last he was laid to rest in Templemaley cemetery. Chief celebrant at his funeral mass was Scariff native Fr. Brendan Moloney, a second cousin, who is the parish priest in the Silvermines in Tipperary.

Campaign urges community to ‘think before they flush’ CIAN O’BROIN

NUMBER of busy businesses in Lahinch recently availed of resources to help combat sewage related litter and wastewater system blockages in the seaside town.

The flushing of unsuitable items like wet wipes down the toilet, can have huge implications for our wastewater systems and can cause hurt and damage to our marine environment.

As part of the Think Before You Flush regional campaign, B&Bs, hotels, hostels, self-catering apartments and campsites in Lahinch are receiving information and resources about the Think Before You Flush campaign, which is a public awareness campaign operated by Clean Coasts in partner-

ship with Irish Water.

Elaine Doyle of Clean Coasts said that the aim of the campaign is to create positive behavioural change and raise awareness around sewage related litter. “We’re delighted to engage with hospitality businesses in Lahinch to remind people to ‘Think Before You Flush’ while visiting. We hope the businesses and community in Lahinch will join us in raising awareness by displaying these resources and help spread this important message.”

The campaign informed that synthetic materials in items like wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products makes them very strong and unable to break down. When these unsuitable items are flushed down the toilet, they can cause blockages in our wastewater network, pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants.

They can also end up on our beaches and in our oceans, damaging our marine environment.

Almost 2,000 blockages occur in the Irish wastewater network every month, 75 per cent of which are caused by wipes.

Raising awareness of this issue, the campaign highlighted, reduces the number of blockages created by this behaviour, and local business’ engagement with the campaign will help to get this important message out to a wider audience.

As part of the regional campaign in Lahinch, the Think Before You Flush campaign are offering a range of information resources including posters, information leaflets, and infographics that can be displayed in your home, business, clubs or community space. Awareness events such as school days, business days, and community events are also taking place.

Speaking about the campaign, Margaret Attridge of Irish Water said that every day, people flush thousands of sanitary items such as wet wipes and cotton bud sticks down the toilet instead of simply

putting them in the bin.

“This causes blockages in our network, pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants.

These items can also end up on our beaches. We remove approximately 2,000 blockages from the sewer network and hundreds of tonnes of items like wipes and sanitary products from wastewater treat-

ment plants around the country every month.”

Margaret would like to remind people to ‘Think Before You Flush’ and only flush the three Ps (pee, poo and paper) down the toilet.

“We all have a role to play in safeguarding our environment and the wastewater network,” she concluded.

Farming columnist with The Clare Echo, Joe Melody questions the reality of biodiversity versus maintaining the livelihoods of farming families

“O

N THE Farm” being the title of my weekly column as it would suggest usually focuses on all things farming related but the nature of the business is that it is inextricably linked to society at large because we are no longer hunters and gatherers so as a society we have abdicated food production to a small few, the farmer.

I came across a story during the week about an issue that is not only affecting our farmers’ ability to feed society but also rural society’s viability to live in the area they were born and raised and in the same houses they have lived in all their lives.

A community in Co. Roscommon has for many years been devastated by flooding affecting their businesses, farmland and homes. Roscommon County Council were due to install an overflow pipe to alleviate the issue and safeguard these communities. However a group going by the name “Friends of the Irish Environment” have secured a high court order halting the works.

On media over the past

few days representatives of this organisation have repeatedly said these flood alleviation works “could worsen the biodiversity crisis”. There is no evidence of this considering even this week in late summer much of these farmlands are still submerged including hedgerows which make it an uninhabitable wasteland for their respective ecosystems.

All this hypocrisy about the “biodiversity crisis” is without speaking of the Humanitarian crisis being wreaked upon the inhabitants of these farms and homes. Once again the radicals are dictating the direction but costing people their livelihoods and their homes in the process.

This sad saga that is playing out in Roscommon is emblematic of what is happening in other areas where groups like FIE can throw out some weak argument under the banner of biodiversity and can make people’s lives a daily drudgery.

We’re told that society is becoming more inclusive and empathetic but only for certain groups, unfortunately rural dwellers, farmers and the custodians of our countryside are being

more and more marginalised. So I now ask myself, is it nature for man or man for nature?

In our own county and without going outside my own area it is obvious to me that without effective drainage systems we would not have Shannon Airport and industrial estates, nor would much of the areas adjoining the river Shannon be inhabitable. The Office of Public Works provides a great service in keeping thousands of acres safe from flooding along by our rivers.

These farmlands serve two major functions side by side, highly productive farming owing to their supreme natural fertility as well as a flourishing ecosystem. Without the drainage system that is in place and continually maintained, there would be no habitats for birds to nest nor bees to feed on.

The plight of the flooded farmland in Roscommon today could be the plight of the flooded business or home in Clare tomorrow. We cannot let fringe groups dictate the course and quality of life for rural dwellers whether that be in the countryside or small rural towns.

SANDBAGS: Flooding has been a major problem in parts of Clare

We owe it to Afghanistan E VENTS transpiring half the world away over the weekend shocked many, as some two decades after their defeat, the Taliban rolled through Afghanistan and back to power without much by way of a whimper.

During that time, many US troops have transitioned to and from the arid, landlocked Asian country via Shannon airport. Often in body bags on the return trip.

Rewinding the clock to the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks in the US, and you had a global superpower baying for revenge against al-Qaeda, the terrorist organisation headed by Osama Bin Laden, which claimed responsibility for the devastation. The fact that al-Qaeda were based in Afghanistan, operating freely and safely under the protection of the ruling Taliban, made that country the primary target for US reprisals.

And so, on October 7th of that year, without the backing of any UN resolution nor the approval of international law, the US, backed by allies such as UK, Australia, India and Canada launched an assault that saw coalition troops sweep through the country in little over two months, overthrowing, but not completely defeating, the Taliban.

President Bush declared in early 2002 that a further military expansion would not happen and in April of that year, committed the US to a ‘Marshall plan for Afghanistan’. In the interim, the US has spent $2 Trillion (with a T!) in, effectively, Nation Building in the Asian state. This mainly included large infrastructure projects, and training and equipping the

new Afghan army, as well as financing the establishment of a new Government and economy. Therefore, when President Biden removed US forces from the country just a month ago, the speed at which two decades of US involvement in the country unravelled, and the Afghan Army capitulated, took the world by surprise. Immediately, thoughts have turned to the plight of the women and girls of Afghanistan.

From 1996 to 2001, the Taliban rule saw heinous crimes committed mainly against the female population of that country who were utterly subjugated to serfdom, at best. Famously, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban in 2012 for the “crime” of being a little girl that wanted to go to school.

There is no evidence that the Taliban of 2021 are any different, despite their claims.

What ever the reasons for the US led invasion of Afghanistan, and the legal issues with such a move, one unmistakable fact is that the Taliban represent a pervasive evil regime that deserved to be driven out. The fact that they’ve been allowed sweep back to power within a month of the western withdrawal is an abject failure of the west, in a policy started

by President Trump and continued, disappointedly,

by President Biden. The latter’s claims that the US was not in Afghanistan for the purpose of nation building is cold hearted and demonstrably untrue. The US helped create the Taliban when it funded and armed the mujahideen rebels fighting Soviet forces in the country from 1979 into the 1980s, eventually resulting in the Soviet withdrawal from the country. The pow-

er vacuum, and subsequent civil war, the US helped create eventually led to the rise of the Taliban to power. The crimes they committed, fuelled by revenue raised from opiate sales, are partially the responsibility of the US right from the offset. Another geopolitical casualty of the US-Russian Cold War. There are those that argue that it’s not for the global west to police the rest of the world. But when faced with such evil and the brutalisation of millions of people, there is a moral obligation for the world to do something. This is not a group of people one can have a stern chat with, to inspire conversation to the core tenets of liberal democracy.

Nor are they a group who can be trusted in negotiations to begin with. These are people who live and die by the sword. It’s how they won power, how they hold onto power and the only way to remove them from power. The anti-war protestors at Shannon airport refuse to acknowledge this inconvenient truth.

War is horrific and should be avoided where possible.

Nevertheless, sometimes some groups leave you with no choice.

The west failed Afghanistan by not providing the structures, environment and support to stand on its own two feet post withdrawal. That is abundantly clear after the events of the past few weeks. It’s now time for the west to step up to the plate in the wake of this tragedy and bring as many refugees, fleeing evil, as possible to salvation and safety. After two decades of profiting from the US use of Shannon on route to Afghanistan, we too owe it to the innocent Afghan people who’ve been abandoned to barbarity.

HETHER you’ve been a sports fan all your life or couldn’t care less about sports, most people love the Olympics. The stories of the athletes and participants overcoming personal struggle to fulfill one’s lifelong dream, emotional finish line moments, and the world coming together to celebrate victory.

The Olympic games are one of the greatest sporting events in all of its unscripted glory every four years or so, although this year's Olympics were a year later than planned. The Summer Olympics were originally scheduled to take place in 2020, but it was postponed due to the pandemic.

It was a special time where many who dared to dream achieved their dreams rather than

just dreaming about them.

Watching and Doing

I just love watching the Olympics; just ask my family about it!

So what is it about the Olympics that we find so utterly captivating? It’s not just going for the medal. It’s reaching for your goal and daring to dream and grasping it. In this case, it’s the Olympic dream. It’s seeing those athletes like our own Paul O'Donovan, Fintan McCarthy and Kellie Harrington on the podium and hopefully a few more in the next games in three years' time. For most of us on some level, we equate winning a medal to achieving.

We see these athletes giving everything they have to achieve their goal and dreams. We live vicariously through their single-minded focus, commitment, and desire to achieve not the medal but excellence. The

medal is just a symbol of having achieved that goal or dream. For some of us, watching these sports people inspires us to do our best at whatever we do.

It helps us realize our human potential. No matter where we live. No matter what language we speak. No matter our religious affiliations, political persuasions, culture, circumstance or struggle.

No matter our place on the road of life we must travel, we each have our unique chance to “earn our place“, to “achieve what we came here to do” and to embrace our “opportunity“. We get up and exercise.

We write. We work harder.

We do something to improve ourselves. For others, it brings up fear: “What if I fail? I could set out to win the race only to disappoint myself and others.” This, of course, applies to life, work and relationships. If you allow fear to stop you from doing what you want to do, you won’t achieve your highest potential . So use the Olympics to actually get yourself off the couch and moving towards your dream, whatever it is! Get out your calendar and block out time to begin actually moving toward those

dreams, no matter how scary that might feel. Don't ever quit or give up on your dreams no matter what they are.

Thought for the week

As you’re thought for the week, never doubt yourself or your dreams or the genuine goodness of another human being, as soon as you feel even vaguely inspired, get up and take some action. I pray that for all of us who have a goal to get over an illness, the loss of a loved one, a worry in life, or a fear that is stopping us from achieving our potential in life might get over that hindrance that is stopping us from moving forward and that we too can achieve our dreams whatever they maybe.

Finally, here is a favourite prayer of mine about daring to dream by Sir Francis Drake: "Disturb us, Lord, when We are too well pleased with ourselves, When our dreams have come true. Because we have dreamed too little, When we arrived safely.

LABASHEEDA COMMEMORATION

THIS heritage event, to be held on Saturday, August 21 at 1pm, will remember the Volunteers of D Company - Labasheeda, 1st Battalion, West Clare Brigade, Irish Republican Army 1916-1921 and their comrades in the 1st Battalion, West Clare Brigade Cumann na mBan. We will remember the lives of the vice-commandant of the First Battalion of the West Clare Brigade Michael Falahee and the Patriot Priest Rev. P.K Hayes, C.C. for the lion-like way he faced Auxiliaries and Black and Tans and protected the people of Labasheeda from their savagery. A piper will play as relatives march behind five flags to Labasheeda Quay where a plaque will be unveiled to remember all the people from the Labasheeda area who were part of the West Clare Brigade. The proclamation will be read and wreaths will be laid before a roll call of members based on information from the Bureau of Military History. The piper end the ceremony with Amhrán Na bhFiann.

Idir Dhá Thrá is an explorative series of music/talks/performances/lectures which responds to the cultural, social and geographical area of North Clare. The events shall take place in the unique setting of the al fresco courtyard garden behind the Salmon Bookshop in Ennistymon. The series will bring together an interesting and collaborative collection of artists, storytellers, lecturers, musicians and poets who will each share from their field of expertise and experience on topics which will resonate with the local communities in North Clare.

Idir Dhá Thrá is kindly supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports & Media and the Clare Arts Office. The series of events will run for 6 consecutive Sundays in August and September. Public sweet on O’Connor’s STUART HOLLY

T BEGAN as the sweetest of stories.

Two young apprentices arrived at Murphy’s Bakery in Kilkee to learn the craft of confectionary but got more than they bargained for, as Pat and Mary O’Connor would soon marry and settle in Ennis where O’Connor’s Bakery was established in 1961.

Fast forward to 2021 and O’Connor’s Bakery is one of Clare’s favourite businesses, famed for its sumptuous hand-baked cream buns, hearty griddle breads and birthday cakes.

From humble beginnings on Parnell Street where the bakery was operated by Mary and Pat, this year O’Connor’s Bakery celebrates 60 years in business and employs around 130 people across its bakery on the Tulla Road and eight shops across Ennis, Shannon,

Limerick, Gort and Galway.

While famous for its confectionary treats and breads, the key ingredients to the success of O’Connor’s Bakery have been hard work, family, staff and loyal customers. Those early days were marked by pure dedication, each day starting at 3am for Mary and Pat – who also initially held down a full-time job in Shannon.

Daughter Annemarie, who is herself an award-winning confectioner, explains, “It would have been just the two of them run-

ning the business in the beginning, baking in the morning and then Mam running the shop while dad went to work during the day

in Shannon. The growth of the business happened organically bit by bit over the years. Mam would have been the businesswoman really, truth be known. She would have seen the opportunity to open a new shop and then the coffee shops followed after that.”

That work ethic has been passed down not only to their five children but also many of the staff who in some cases have loyally served the bakery for decades. Two of the five O’Connor children are actively involved in the running of the business,

Annemarie and her brother Brendan.

Their three siblings continue to be a support behind the scenes while all of 11 grandchildren have worked in the shops or bakery at various stages. “My mother is still very much involved at 85 years of age,” Annemarie

Bakery after 60 years tells The Clare Echo. “It’s her life, it’s what keeps her going. She can be found on the floor anyplace, she could be moulding bread, boxing birthday cakes; she could be doing anything!”

The traditional offerings at O’Connor’s have been complimented by newer products as people’s tastes have developed, with new breads and grains such as spelt becoming a regular sight on their shelves, along with those of retailers across the Midwest who support O’Connor’s such as Dunnes, Supervalu and Centras. The arrival of Covid-19 to society also allowed the O’Connors time to focus on their online offering which has been a huge success and customers can now browse https:// www.oconnorsbakery.com/ where they can order and pay for the entire range of goods, including customised cakes.

That being said, it’s the retail shops that offer the optimum visitor experience where the inviting scents of baked goods first welcome customers. Annemarie says, “Customers come in not only for the product but also for the chat and the interaction that they do get from the girls behind the counter. For the centre of a town, if you don’t have those small retail shops there would be no life in the town. Ennis is a very good shopping town and it’s the collection and variety of different businesses in the town.”

While Dad, Pat sadly passed away last October, the entire O’Connor family is

proud to have overseen the growth of their business and served the entire Midwest over the last six decades. However the overriding emotion is that of gratitude. “I suppose we are very proud but of course we wouldn’t be here without the customers and the staff that we have. A number of them would be with us over 30 years. We have that work ethic that was handed down to us by both my parents, and that’s been handed down to not only us as a family but also the staff in their work ethic and how hard they work in the bakery. It is very much a skilled craft in that everything is handmade. Without them we wouldn’t have a business and we never take it for granted.”

Annemarie hopes the family can continue to grow the O’Connor’s Bakery business into the future, “We will hopefully continue to grow the business and keep doing what we’re doing, and keep the customers happy.”

Attention on B teams

WITH the debate about whether B teams from clubs should be promoted to the Premier League parked for the time being, there is sure to be keen interest in how teams such as Newmarket Celtic B, Shannon Town B, Avenue B and Bridge B do in the T Shiels & Company First Division.

At the AGM earlier this year this topic raised heated debate with strong views expressed on either side of the argument.

Gary Dear, joint manager of Mountshannon Geltic who are back in the Maloney Hardware Premier Division this year, supports the view that B teams should be promoted to the top tier if they finish in the top positions in the First Division “Those aren’t the rules at the moment and we have been promoted after finishing in fourth spot in the first division. We will be hoping to stay up in the premier but it won’t be easy”, he told The Clare Echo this week.

“With Scariff and Whitegate competing in the Clare senior hurling championship, players from those clubs who play with us won’t be available to Mountshannon Celtic while they are still in the hurling competition and the same applies to those from Bodyke and Feakle who play with us”.

other clubs that “Covid has affected all clubs but we have benefitted in one sector as we have gained many players for out schoolboys and schoolgirls teams and we have been able to enter more teams at these levels. We now have seven underage teams as well as our junior side which is good for the game in this area”.

Clare’s FAI development officer Denis Hynes is very pleased to see the return of the leagues.

“We don’t know how the quality will be in the short term as players have to deal with their work schedules and other sporting commitments which are likely to have an impact”.

The Ennistymon man went on to reveal that details of a strate-

gy for Clare soccer to run from 2022 to 2025 will be revealed shortly. “During the Covid lockdown we have been working on developing this strategy which will deal with facilitating player development as well as league and club development. The GAA has realigned their season and we may have to do the same”, he said.

There are five games listed for decision in the First Division this Sunday when Avenue B, Bridge Utd B, Coole FC, Hermitage and Shannon Town B will all have home advantage against Tulla United, Moher Celtic A, Turnpike Rovers, Kilrush Rangers and Newmarket Celtic B.

His father Stephen played for Newtown and he was the last manager to win a trophy with Bunratty “so the pressure is on,” Dean admitted.

“Players want to be playing and training and that’s the case here in the club. They are itching to get back to regular action and be playing here in Woulfe Park and at venues throughout the county”.

At adult level there are fifteen league games down for decision this weekend across four divisions with five games listed in the first division. In addition there are six youths league ties listed for decision and one under 19 game. It promises to be an exciting weekend.

Securing soccer squads a struggle for some clubs

WITH the Maloney Hardware Premier Division set to get underway this weekend, clubs have been busy finalising arrangements over the past couple of weeks, writes Seamus Hayes.

Some clubs have taken part in the League Cup competitions which have now reached the final stage with the deciders set to be played over the October Bank holiday weekend.

A number of clubs opted not to take part in the League Cup, some struggling to get panels together as players were reluctant to return as Covid is still prominent while others didn’t want to put pressure on players who were committed to other codes.

Avenue Utd A manager, David Russell said they treated the League Cup very seriously and will be bringing the same approach to the League as they bid to take down reigning champions Newmarket Celtic.

One club that has struggled to get a squad together is Shannon Olympic who will get their season underway this Sunday when they entertain local rivals Shannon Hibs at Olympic Park.

Clare District Soccer League Treasurer, Tony Downey is in the hot seat as Ennis Town manager, he flagged that their young side will take time to find their feet against more experienced outfits.

“Originally there was a fear that we would fold as we were unable to field in the league cup. This was due

to a combination of factors including players waiting to get their vaccination. We don’t have players coming through as we don’t have underage teams. We are likely to be pushed to stay in the division this season. For a lot of the lads in our squad, it could be their last season as they have been part of the club for some time”, team manager Dave Flaherty explained to The Clare Echo.

“This is a big game for us on Sunday, a local derby in Olympic Park.

We need to get a few results early in the campaign”, he added.

For Lifford manager Anton Mannering “it would be lovely to win a title as the club hasn’t achieved anything major in recent years. It’s the 60th anniversary of the club this year and while we would like to win to mark that anniversary, it would be crazy to put that pressure on. Right now the main focus for Lifford is to win more games than we lose in a season and if we can do that it will be great. There is no expectation that we must win anything but if we can manage to do so it will be great”.

“We are all delighted to be back playing. Covid has had an effect in that those not committed in the first place have drifted away whereas those who are committed to the game have kept themselves in gopod order and have have come back in great shape,” Mannering said.

TIPPERARY proved too strong for Clare’s U14 ladies footballers when they clashed in the Munster Final on Sunday.

David Nagle’s side were left shellshocked early on with Tipperary raiding for 2-02 inside the opening six minutes of the contest.

Hazel O’Shea struck for Clare’s first goal after the water break, despite Aine McNamara adding to her tally, Tipperary once again found an extra level and led at half-time 5-04 1-04.

Clare’s side kept battling until the end but the better balanced and stronger Tipperary claimed a deserved provincial title.

Further Munster Final action is on the cards for the county with the Clare U16 side facing off with Limerick on Friday evening in Bruff.

Comebacks aplenty at U15 as St Joseph’s Doora Barefield claim Division 1 football title

THERE were comebacks aplenty as the Under 15 finals ramped up this week in both codes.

St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield sparked the backlash trend when producing a six point second half turnaround to snatch the Under 15 Division 1 Football crown from Lissycasey’s grasp by 1-08 to 0-10 in Cusack Park on Monday evening.

Lissycasey’s miserly rearguard, led by captain Michael Kelly, Cathal Casey and Aidan Weaver, had expertly kept the Parish’s chief threats Padraic O’Donovan and Eoin Ógie Fanning at bay, allowing Daire Culligan and Ben Skerritt to fire braces each at the other end and give the Under 14 Division 1 champions a 0-7 to 0-2 cushion by the start of the second half.

However, with the wind now at their backs and a consistent supply-line from Conor Daly and Jack Dillon in particular, Doora/Barefield’s dynamic duo finally stormed into prominence, with captain O’Donovan (1-2) and Fanning (0-4) combining spectacularly to hit the front by 1-8 to 0-8 by the 55th minute.

Daire Culligan did lead the Lissycasey revolt with the last two points but St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield clung on defiantly to claim the inaugural U15 Division 1 silverware.

24 hours later at the same venue, the Division 2 equivalent was even more dramatic as Cooraclare and Clooney-Quin were level on eight occasions in a titanic thriller that went all the way to extra-time before a replay was agreed to instead of a penalty shoot-out at 2-15 apiece. In nor-

mal time, the outstanding Darragh White fronted three separate Clooney-Quin fightbacks to reel in Cooraclare, with an injury-time goal through Conor McCarthy almost stealing the crown only for Kevin Marrinan to produce a spectacular equaliser to force the additional periods.

Marrinan would extend that influence with an extra-time goal that took until the final minutes for Clooney-Quin to equal, with Jerry O’Connor cooly slotting over a 78th minute leveller that ensured a mouth-watering return decider.

Clooney-Quin did secure Under 15 hurling silverware when overcoming Kilmaley by 3-11 to 3-06 in the Academy B Final for second teams in Tubber on Sunday. Second quarter goals through scorerin-chief Cormac Hale and Sean Cassidy saw Clooney-Quin seize control by the break at 2-8 to 1-3 before a third goal from Lochlann Carey provided the cushion to be able to withstand Kilmaley’s backlash, despite two goals for Patrick Clancy.

However, in an imminent potential fixture pile-up for Clooney-Quin, their flagship team will also lock horns with Kilmaley again in the Under 15B Hurling Championship Final The U15 Academy A Hurling Final was more clear-cut as Éire Óg bounced back from last year’s final defeat to Doora/Barefield to overpower Corofin/Ruan by 3-8 to 1-4 in Crusheen on Sunday 17 wides masked a commanding display led by centre-back Essan Malek that was finally expressed with second half goals through David Loftus (2) and substitute Eoin Pyne.

Hanrahan claims President’s Prize at Kilrush

He won, with a better back nine, from Neil Browne (9) who also returned 42 points. They were followed by John McGrath (14) with 41 points, Greg Young (9) with 40 points, John McNeilis (20) with 39 oins and Gearoid Williams (15) with 39 points. Shane Lillis (+1) won the gross with 32 points.

The category winners were Gearoid Kelly (11) with 39 points, John Donnelly (16) with 37 points and Patrick Coleman (20) with 38 points. Matt Rea (23) with 21 points and John Cuggeran (12) with 22 points won the nines. Other prize winners were, Jim Young Snr (12) with 36 points (past president), Kevin Clancy (14) (committee) with 37 points, Ger Brennan (nearest the pin) and Shane Lillis (long drive).

Thursday’s winner was Cillian Mahon with 42 points off the white tees, Aaron Piccolo with 43 points off the black tees and Saoirse Brennan with 22 points in the girls section.

In the weekly 9 hole competition, Robert Meehan won from Liam Moloney with Patrick Mccoy in third spot and all three returned 21 points.

LAHINCH GOLF CLUB: Despite miserable conditions last Saturday, 129 members braved the elements for lady captain Margaret Cooney’s prize on the Old Course while 18 teed off on the Castle Course for the Senior Ladies prize.

With fading light, the last player to finish play, Áine O’Brien, won the prize on countback with 35 points while Barbara McEvoy won the senior ladies 18-hole competition with Gerri Baggot winning the 9-hole competition. Margaret thanked all members for contributing to her chosen charity, the Clare Branch of the Alzheimer’s Association, with just under €2,000 being raised.

All roads lead to Castle Golf Club next week where the ladies senior cup team will defend their All-Ireland title. While some of the panel members are unavailable, team managers, Valerie Hassett and Aedin McCarthy and their team are leaving no stone unturned in preparing.

Members who are planning on travelling to Dublin should register online as restrictions may apply on the number of

spectators who can attend. Members should note that they need to register separately for Friday (Auguts 20) and Saturday August 21.

After a delay of 12 months due to Covid-19, one of the senior cup players, Áine Donegan, is travelling to the USA this weekend to commence her studies and golf scholarship with the Indiana Hoosiers.

SHANNON is now home to an undisputed and undefeated professional world kickboxing champion thanks to Liam Alford’s success in Birmingham on Sunday.

Liam had a knockout victory over Qasim Beg, one minute and forty seconds into the fourth round of their bout. Prior to the fight, Qasim was undefeated in forty nine outings, the win also saw Liam claim the YKF, WKO, ICO and WRSA belts making him the undisputed champion in the 63.5kg weight division.

Speaking to The Clare Echo at the Shannon Kickboxing Club, Liam admitted that the magnitude of the

win had yet to sink in. His rise in the professional ranks by claiming all the belts at his disposal and building a 2-0 record is a sign of intent, “we haven’t wasted any time, we went straight to the top”.

“Before this fight Qasim Beg he was the man, he was undefeated and held all the belts, now that I beat him it makes me the man,” the twenty one year old said.

“With the amount of what I’ve achieved and what it stood for that was the biggest fight of my career. At the moment, it is the top of kickboxing, it is the top of the sport to hold all the belts in the weight division, there is no other champion in my weight”.

In preparation for the weekend, he completed a twelve week training camp under the watchful eyes of

around the country to go sparring with a multitude of opponents posing different threats.

Reflecting on his success,

Liam was quick to pay tribute to his parents Ollie and Catherine, his coach Howie Vincent and his girlfriend Emma for their unwavering support. His journey with Howie goes back to when he started out doing karate at the age of four before transitioning into kickboxing as a young teenager.

While details of his next fight are unknown, the past pupil of St Patrick’s Comprehensive is keen to defend his title on home soil. “The sky is the limit. As soon as we turned professional we straight away went to the top, we’re not afraid to fight anybody, I truly believe I’m the best in the world at my weight so if anybody proves that they are in line for a title shot, I’m not going to dodge anyone or pick and choose my fights, I’ve the target on

my back now because I have the belts, people will work their way up the ladder and whoever is next in line we will fight them. I would love to have my next fight in Ireland, my last couple of fights have been abroad, I haven’t fought in Ireland in a long time and would like to defend my title in Ireland”.

On Monday, a large homecoming in Shannon came as a big shock to Liam and one that he is not likely to forget anytime soon.

“I was shocked and lost for words. Ireland really backs their own whether it be fighting, singing or soccer, we back our people no matter what and that’s why I’d love to bring the show back to Ireland so everyone could see it live”.

Thrilling victory for Kilrush’s Flyers Coolio FLYERS Coolio owned by Kilrush’s Michael Fitzgerald recorded a thrilling win in Galway on Friday.

The A4 graded seventh contest over 550 yards at the Galway Track on Friday Night last looked a decent contest and so it proved as the Marion Moroney of Ennis owned Allegra Blue (Droopys Nudge-Rathmeehan Graggi) routed her rivals by upwards of eight and a half lengths in 30.13. On the long run towards the opening bend the wide seeded Sir Sean showed pace to lead Allegra Blue by almost two lengths but turning down the back the writing was clearly on the wall for all. Sweeping to the front approaching halfway Allegra Blue quickly set sail for home and powered round the third bend she left her rivals toiling as she strode right away for an impressive success.

As the traps rose in race three for an S10 graded affair, Gower Dazzler was first to emerge but on the run towards the opening bend with Amigo and Woodpark Beauty both showed pace on either side of the early leader to take command approaching the turn.
