‘ONE OF THE GREATS’ Chris Droney remembered PÁRAIC McMAHON

ARM and glowing tributes have been paid to one of Clare’s greatest sons and one of the country’s finest musicians following his passing in recent days. Chris Droney died peacefully at University Hospital Galway following 95 years of music, laughter and love. The former Clare Person of the Year has been recognised on a national level for his brilliance on the concertina, a style of music which remained rooted in his beloved North Clare home. He learned to play music by ear and had a career in music which spanned almost nine decades. The Bellharbour native was also a very proud family man and shared a deep love for his wife Margaret, they lived to see three generations after them. His attention to detail was also visible in the manner in which he kept their immaculate family farm. Leader of the Kilfenora Céilí Band, John Lynch described Chris as one “the Gods that we looked up to” and an ambassador for the county. Musician Noel Hill maintained that Droney was one of the individuals responsible for the survival of the concertina.

THIRD CLARE SCHOOL DEALING WITH COVID-19 A THIRD Clare school has been affected by a confirmed case of COVID-19, writes Páraic McMahon. Schools reopened across the country at the end of August and in the space of three weeks, a total of three primary schools have been affected to varying degrees relating to close contact with positive cases and confirmed cases. Second class pupils in St Conaire’s National School have been out of the Shannon school for the past week after it emerged that one pupil had tested positive for the virus. Remaining classes are operating as normal. A week previous, parents of fifth and sixth class students at Stonehall National School were informed of a confirmed case involving one member of the class. Testing has not found there to be subsequent cases emerging in the Newmarket-on-Fergus school. Earlier this month, Meelick NS was forced to temporarily close as it was left without any member of permanent staff after personnel were required to self-isolate having been in contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19. Clare schools and their equivalents across the country will remain open even if Ireland returns to the lockdown measures enforced earlier in this year. This was confirmed as part of the Living with COVID-19 framework released on Tuesday. Data released by the Department of Health on Tuesday highlighted that the number of people hospitalised with COVID-19 in the country was at its highest point since midJune. A total of 68 confirmed Covid-19 cases are currently in Irish hospitals – the highest figure since 16 June. There are currently 13 Covid-19 cases in ICU – the highest figure since 30 June.
