UFTHANSA Technik’s future in Shannon remains up in the air with up to 500 jobs on the line.

Earlier this week, the airport maintenance specialist confirmed that it was carrying out a strategic review of its Irish operations.

Options currently on the table for the German firm include a restructuring of its Irish operation, closing down the plant altogether or selling the business.

said to have expressed an interest.

Based in Shannon since the early 1990s, Lufthansa provides over 300 highly-skilled jobs with the remainder carried out by contractors.

“If aircrafts aren’t flying, businesses like Lufthansa will be impacted into the future,” CEO of Shannon Chamber, Helen Downes warned.

Responding to comments by Deputy Joe Carey (FG) in the Dáil this week, Taoiseach Micheál Martin (FF) confirmed that Government agencies will engage with the company. “They are important jobs that we want to retain in the country and the region.

The whole area in question has been very effective in creating jobs relating to aviation.

The government will do everything we can to be of support to ensure the retention of jobs”.

DOOLIN B&B has been ranked in the top 20 guesthouses in the world and the continent’s top 10.

In the latest Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, Daly’s House in Doolin was voted as the best-rated B&B in Ireland, the eighth best in Europe and the nineteenth best across the globe.

Daly’s House has been open for 35 years, this is the second year on the trot that it has claimed Ireland’s top spot. The awards are calculated using online reviews which guests leave after their stay.

Owner of the B&B, Susan Daly stated that online visibility has become very important for the business. All of last year’s bookings for the Doolin guesthouse came from the Irish market, bookings for late in 2022 are coming from the US market while as of yet it is not fully booked for the summer.

Internationally, Hotel Colline de France, a French Chateau in Gramado, southern Brazil, was named the best rated hotel in the world for 2021, while the Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco in Capri, Italy was named the best rated small hotel. ENIOR officials in Clare County Council are reluctant to give “any commitments we can’t stand over” when it comes to engaging full-time lifeguards at coastal locations.

Separate motions were tabled

by Cllr Mary Howard (FG) and Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) at Monday’s meeting of Clare County Council seeking the provision of full-time lifeguards from May right through to September at all nine Blue Flag beaches.

Full-time lifeguard service began at Lahinch, Spanish Point, Fanore and Kilkee on June 5th and runs seven days a week until August 31st. The service commenced at White Strand Miltown Malbay, White Strand Doonbeg, Cappa, Mountshannon, Ballycuggeran and Ballyalla on the same day for

Pyrite affecting homes

by PÁRAIC McMAHON TWO local authority built estates are believed to contain Pyrite defective blocks heightening concern that the issue in Co Clare is much bigger than anticipated.

A study of the likely extent of the problem within Clare was undertaken by Clare County Council in January. It has now emerged that two estates built by the County Council are compromised. The Clare Echo understands that they are located in Ennis and North Clare.

Up to 35 homeowners in Clare have reported significant cracking of external walls due to the presence of pyrite in the building blocks used to construct the houses.

Deputy McNamara commented: “Dozens of private houses in Clare have been found to be essentially crumbling a result of defective concrete blocks.

Clare County Council is currently analysing test data from five private properties potentially affected by pyrite. While the full results are expected at the end of June, the present indication is that pyrite is present in the blockwork of these homes. The local authority has confirmed to McNamara that two local authority built estates may be effected.

Further testing will be completed in the coming days. Both of the estates in question were part of the Council’s stock condition survey during 2018 and up until recently showed no sign of structural problems.

Minister opens new €3.2m HQ

by PÁRAIC McMAHON MINISTER for Defence and Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney (FG) has officially opened the new Clare Civil Defence headquarters.

Located on the Quin Rd campus in Ennis, the state-of-the-art building will be utilised by more than 100 Civil Defence volunteers from across Clare. It has training facilities, office accommodation, a records management centre, storage and a garage.

Clare Civil Defence currently has 82 active volunteer members and 30 reserve members. 300 separate COVID-19 related tasks multiple other roles including a number of missing person searches have been undertaken by the Civil Defence. Their work was lauded by Minister Coveney, Mayor of Clare, Cllr Mary Howard (FG) and Council Chief Executive Pat Dowling at an official opening ceremony. Dowling stated, “The work done by Clare Civil Defence at times of severe weather events, flooding and storms is hugely important”.

The acquisition and redevelopment of the headquarters was funded by Clare County Council, supported by the Department of Defence. Clare Civil Defence operates one of the most modern fleets in the country, which is funded through the Civil Defence section of the Department of Defence.

Tulla native Fr Nash appointed Bishop PÁRAIC MCMAHON

LARE priest Fr Ger Nash has been appointed by Pope Francis as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Ferns.

Fr Nash will succeed Bishop Denis Brennan and as a result will vacate his roles in the Killaloe Diocese as Diocesan Secretary and Director of Pastoral Development.

Born on 27th February 1959 in Glandree in the parish of Tulla, Ger was one of four children to the late Tommy and Mary. His sister Bernie died in 2008 while his sisters Teresa and Margaret are said to be extremely proud of their older brother’s recognition in becoming Diocese of Ferns which covers most of Co Wexford and parts of Wicklow.

I want to thank Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly SMA, whose time in Killaloe was short but whose vision and planning gave us our current pastoral plan which emphasised collaboration as a central principle.

"Finally, I thank my classmate, Bishop Fintan Monahan, whose availability and kindness to people and priests sets a benchmark for good ministry. I also thank him for his unwavering support for the projects we undertook in Pastoral Development over the past five years”.

Retired Air Corps pilot recounts rescues in new memoir CIAN O’BROIN cian@clareecho.ie

A

RETIRED Air Corps helicopter rescue pilot now living in Clare has penned a memoir detailing some of his most memorable rescues across a 20-year career in the military.

Born to a Liscannor man who was at the time, a headmaster in a primary school in Blanchardstown, Dublin Commandant Frank Russell realised “his boyhood dreams” of flying when he joined the 39th Cadet Class in The Curragh in 1964 and later received his wings from the Air Corps in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel in 1968.

For four years he flew a De Havilland Vampire Jet, one of the last that the Air Corps had, which can now be seen on display at the National Museum in Collins Barracks in Dublin.

In 1973, Frank decided to volunteer for the Helicopter Rescue Service within the Air Corps, who were providing the National Rescue Service and Air Ambulance within the country at the time.

ous role, Frank now “looks back with pride” at his rescues including those in Galway, Sligo and cross border military operations during the troubles.

“Everything we did was for someone else, it’s a great way to live and to work.

“At the end of the day or night, the feeling of rescuing somebody was something special,” the retired Ballyvaughan resident added.

Opting to collate his memories into a collection during the lockdown, Frank teases readers by linking his first “most memorable” story and his last, which uncovers a mysterious element to his first rescue over 45 years later.

His first Search and Rescue (SAR) mission in the summer of 1972 is “certainly the most memorable” and “one that I haven’t forgotten.”

Posted in Dublin, Frank and his crew received a call concerning two French sailors who were marooned off their trawlers along the coast of Co. Galway, it took two hours to reach them, after winching the first sailor, Frank received a slap on the shoulder which caused the power lever to drop suddenly and the vehicle to plunge towards the sea.

A Co-Founder of the Centre in 2002, Frank battled his first bout of cancer in 1998, being diagnosed with cancer of the neck.

In 2006, he received the news that he had prostate cancer and has since, won his battle with a diagnosis that hits 3,890 men In Ireland per year and one in seven during a lifetime.

“There is a lot in the book for Clare people including a revisit of a crash from a Shannon flight, 607E in 1958, which I looked at as part of my role within the Department of Transport as an Inspector of Air Accidents that I retired from in 2009.

“I have a deep connection with Co Clare through my father, who was the first cousin of the famous Russell brothers, who renowned musicians from Doolin.

“My grandparents are buried at St. Brigid’s Well along with my brothers Paul and Kevin.”

‘The Lord Almighty would be denied’

Drive for funds in Kilnaboy

by CIAN O’BROIN A MAJOR drive for funds to improve the church, school and community car park deemed a “health hazard” is underway in the village of Kilnaboy.

Kilnaboy Community Development Association were recently awarded €23,000

by CLÁR towards the redevelopment of the community car park, an undertaking estimated to cost €35,000 in total.

The €12,000 deficit required for the car park will facilitate the upgrades to the surface, add new markings and additional lighting.

Sean Roche who is heavily involved in the local Youth Club said: “People need a safe and secure place to park. There are a lot of communions, confirmations, weddings and funerals that take place here. The car park has been used as a pitstop on several cycling tours of the Burren in recent years. The surface has been there since the early 2000s and its worn,” he said.

Donations can be made via a Go Fund Me page or in person at four locations in Corofin: Centra and Daybreak on Main Street, Tom Hogan’s on Market Street as well as Lakefield Service Station on the Ennis Road.

IVINE intervention would fail to suffice when it comes to planning applications in West Clare, a county councillor has claimed.

A plea to end the “discriminating practice of refusing planning permission to people because of address or geographic location” by amending the present County Development Plan was reiterated

by Cllr PJ Kelly (FF) at Monday’s meeting of Clare County Council.

Director of Service, Liam Conneally stressed that “no discriminating practices exist in the Council’s exercise of the planning function and I refuse to accept the insinuation that any such practice is taking place

Speaking on Monday, Cllr Kelly expressed his disappointment with the response, “benefit denied is discrimination”. He said that one man in Doonbeg was refused planning four times in 16 years on different points of his land. “We have what are known as scenic routes, people cannot build between the scenic route or the river or the Atlantic as the case may be”. Kelly stated that discrimination towards applications occurred in Ballynacally and Cahercon.

“The Lord Almighty is lucky he didn’t apply for planning permission at Mount Callan because he would have been told it was visually vulnerable,” the Lissycasey representative quipped.

Improvements and more resources regarding pre-planning are required in Clare where the landscape was described by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) as “unique”.

Coastal homes crisis

Westbrook to continue as is WESTBROOK House will continue to be used as a homeless facility, writes Páraic McMahon.

Until December 2019, Westbrook House operated as a guesthouse. It was then acquired by Clare County Council and has been run by Mid-West Simon since then.

On Monday, Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) detailed that complaints still existed regarding non-compliance with a ruling from An Bord Pleanála which overruled the Council on the status of Westbrook House.

Director of Service, Anne Haugh stated that the continued operation of Westbrook House as a homeless facility would be regularised by way of a Chief Executive’s order using emergency powers.

l HOUSING: The Atlantic crashes into the Doolin coast

AN INFORMAL agreement has been reached on the progression of a new social housing scheme for Scariff, writes Páraic McMahon.

In April, the 18 unit development hit a stumbling block with the Department of Housing seeking changes to the plans put forward by Clare County Council. Cllr Pat Burke (FG) requested an update at Monday’s meeting of the local authority, “it seems to be dragging on a while” he remarked.

Speaking on Monday, Director of Service Anne Haugh outlined that a redesign of the scheme was required and this has been “informally agreed with the Department”. A briefing is to be held with the Killaloe Municipal District next week.

CRISIS exists regarding the provision of permanent residencies in coastal parts of Clare, a county councillor has flagged while the amount of households in social housing need has increased.

Three families have left Kilkee in the last three weeks due to an inability to get a house to live in all-year round, Cllr Cillian

Murphy (FF) stated at Monday’s meeting of Clare County Council.

“We have a crisis in housing along our coastal communities in permanent residential people,” he warned.

Kilkee losing seven children from those families would have an “immense knock-on effect on our community,” Murphy stated.

Failure to address this will render rural development, regeneration and strategies null and void.

His comments followed a proposal by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) which sought a short, me-

Clare’s reported social housing need in 2020 is a net need of 1209 households, Director of Services Anne Haugh stated in response.

“This is an increase on the 1070 households reported in the 2019 Social Housing Assessment”.

Policy changes to support the delivery of social housing have been considered by the Social Directorate SPC and communicated to the Minister for Housing.

Vacant housing stock must be utilised to tackle the growing demand for social housing, Cllr McMahon affirmed.

Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) believed the motion was “very pertinent to the debate on rural development”. Infrastructure must exist to encourage persons to live where housing is affordable, he added.

More guidance needs to be given to councillors on the planning process, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) felt.

“The crisis in planning is not helped by the crisis in housing,” the Shannon man said.

Vote to draw down €10m loan for Ennis 2040 DAC is passed PÁRAIC MCMAHON

LARE councillors have voted 23-5 in favour of drawing down a €10m loan for the Ennis 2040 Designated Activity Company (DAC).

Elected representatives debated the matter for in excess of 90 minutes on Monday with an attempted amendment by Cllr PJ Kelly (FF) to delay the process rejected.

The matter was initially included on the agenda for the May meeting of the Council but was withdrawn at the 11th hour to allow briefings be held with councillors prior to its discussion.

Nine transformational sites have been identified as part of the Ennis 2040 strategy.

Gerry Cahill formerly of Roche is to chair the DAC’s Board of Directors and it is also set to include AIB’s Kieran Considine, founder of TTM Healthcare Brian Crowley, Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF), Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG), Cllr Ann Norton (IND), Clare County Council’s Head of Finance Noeleen Fitzgerald and Director of Service Liam Con-

neally.

More than €10m should be borrowed for Ennis 2040, Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) stated as he proposed the loan be drawn down, “if we don’t do this we’re letting multiples of tens of millions slip out of the county”.

Former Mayor of Clare and Ennis, Colleran Molloy seconded the proposal. She believed the strength of the county town would benefit Clare as a whole.

“I will make list of all the grants that have gone to West Clare since my arrival. We spent €2.5m putting digital hub into Ennistymon, members of Ennis MD did not object, they saw the benefit”.

A debate of them versus us was saddening, Cllr Tony O’Brien (FF) opined, “I beg to differ that it is a private company, we’re advocating our responsibilities, we have sight but no control”.

Merits of the document were lauded by Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF), “anything that will benefit Ennis will benefit the entire county”.

All Board members of the DAC will be there on a voluntary capacity, Cllr Norton commented. “You have to spend money to make money, that is very clear with Ennis 2040, that will go out to rest of the county”.

In response, Cllr G Flynn detailed the projected annual costs for the first five years include salaries and office costs, “the initial salary costs are estimated in the region of €250,000 to €300,000, these are not volunteers, they are highly paid executives with no real accountability to the public”.

Councillors voted 23-5 in favour of drawing down the €10m loan.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin (FF) is due to launch the strategy in the coming weeks.

‘If basic CPR is not done first, then there is little to no chance’ CIAN O’BROIN

N ADVANCED paramedic living in West Clare has flagged the importance of access to defibrillators in isolated communities as an essential lifesaving requirement.

Kilkee resident and HSE paramedic Keith McDonagh stressed that a surplus of defibrillators within the local community has led to the saving of at least one life since January 2020. In total, Kilkee has “upwards of seven” registered defibrillators strategically positioned within the seaside town.

“We are so isolated here in West Clare. The wait time can be up to or more than one hour for an ambulance and resources are limited,” Keith who is a founding member of Kilkee Community First Responders (CFR) added.

Kilkee CFR was established in December 2019 and is tied into the National Ambulance Service. Now boasting a total of 14 members within the community, the group are the first to receive a text when a cardiac arrest occurs within their designated area.

A number of generous donations were made by locals in

order to install the defibrillators which are located at the Kilkee Dive Centre, the Greyhound Bar, Marion Estate entrance, the Diamond Rocks Café and the Parish Priests House.

“This is a huge amount for a small community but it’s necessary as we are so isolated.” They are expensive to

install, costly to maintain and often run a theft or vandalism risk, he added. Defibrillators can be identified as yellow boxes within the town. In the event of a cardiac arrest, dial 999, input the Eircode of the box and wait for an access pin that will open the defibrillator, Keith informed.

The next step is to unzip and follow the voice instructions when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Keith believes that everyone should be taught CPR from primary school level.

“The first person to do the most basic thing, has the biggest impact. It’s all good and well when we arrive with our machines and pads but if basic CPR is not done first, then there is little to no chance in helping them.”

For anyone unfamiliar with CPR, Keith urges you to visit the Irish Heart Foundation online and watch a two min basic video on how to perform. Classes can also be booked with the Irish Red Cross.

Post office closure is ‘cherry picking’

by PÁRAIC McMAHON AN POST have reiterated its stance that the Broadford post office will not be reopening.

Appearing before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications, An Post discussed its net loss of four post offices nationally during the pandemic, this included Broadford which had been in operation for almost 190 years.

In February, An Post ruled out a reopening in Broadford and this stance was reiterated last week but Cathal Crowe TD (FF) believes an immediate review is warranted and accused An Post of “cherry picking”.

“There had been a commitment to keep Broadford open and only for personal reasons necessitating the postmaster’s retirement, this branch would be open today. So it is incorrect to say that Broadford’s closure has been a result of Covid-19 or contractual changes or so on,” he stated.

REES have been removed in Shannon Town for “safety reasons”.

A number of trees were felled this week on the Airport Rd in Rossbracken after it emerged that some of them had been damaged, others were dying Now or had a disease.

Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) stated, “These trees are at risk of coming down so for safety reasons they are being removed.

A plan along with biodiversity will be put in place next year to work around replacing these beautiful trees.

Lufthansa strategic review prompts worry for 300 jobs

by PÁRAIC McMAHON FEARS for over 300 jobs in Shannon have been raised as the future for Lufthansa in Co Clare comes under threat.

Lufthansa Technik are carrying out a strategic review of its Shannon operations which is examining three options for its future in the Mid-West. The first option is to restructure its Irish operation, the second is to close down the plant entirely and the third is to sell the business.

Of the three options on the table, The Business Post reports that a sale is the most likely outcome. Man-

agement of the aircraft and repair business are keen to cut costs at the Shannon plant.

The paper reported that senior political figures including Tanáiste Leo Varadkar (FG), Minister for Finance Pascal Donohoe (FG) and Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath (FF) have been notified of the company’s current position.

The Clare Echo understands that potential buyers have visited the site but this remains at a commercially sensitive stage. A decision on Lufthansa Technik’s future is to be made known in the first half of July.

An operating loss of €318m was recorded by Lufthansa last year, this compares with a €403m operating profit from 2019.

Combined sales of €65m in 2020 were recorded by the German firm’s Shannon business, this was a 28 percent drop on the €90m in sales a year previously.

€8k allocated for Parnell St paint scheme

by PÁRAIC Mc MAHON €8000 has been allocated for a painting, gutter cleaning and repair scheme to properties which connect to the Ennis public realm works on Parnell Street.

Councillors in the Ennis Municipal District backed a proposal from Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) to select Parnell St for the scheme which will run in conjunction with the €10,000 available under the Community Support Scheme. €300 will be made available for the painting of the property and €100 for gutter cleaning.

Initial work on Parnell St has made a real difference, Mayor of Ennis Cllr Ann Norton (IND) maintained, “it looks amazing” as she backed “a chance to take pride in our town. Cllr Mary Howard (FG) believed the area had the potential to become “one of those Instagram locations”.

Director of Service, Carmel Kirby said the move by councillors represented “a hugely important investment”.

Senior executive officer, Leonore O’Neill stressed, “We want to assist businesses that have had a very tough time”.

Applications are to open in the coming days for the scheme.

AREFIELD representative Cllr Ann Norton (IND) has been elected as the Mayor of Ennis.

It is the second time the founder of Clare Crusaders will serve in the role, having previously worn the Mayoral chains in 2016. She succeeds Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) who has was elected as Deputy Mayor of the Ennis Municipal District and takes over from Cllr Mark Nestor (FF).

First elected to Clare County Council in 2014, Cllr Norton won2,240 first preference votes when she contested the 2016 General Election.

Speaking at Friday’s AGM of the Ennis MD, Cllr Norton said she was “deeply honoured” to take on the position. The mother of three believed that the in-person meeting represented a more positive development of the pandemic and said that she would not be present without the support of the family during a very difficult 15 months. Her parents, husband Cathal and children Nicole,

‘It’s appaling to keep Ennis Friary locked up’

by PÁRAIC Mc MAHON THE absence of a planned reopening date for a historical landmark in Ennis has been lamented as “appalling” by the county’s first citizen.

No opening date has been pencilled in for the Ennis Friary, officials with the Office of Public Works have confirmed.

Clarity on when it was planned to make the Friary accessible to the public was sought by Cllr Mary Howard (FG) at the June meeting of the Ennis Municipal District.

She referenced the promotion of Ennis as a staycation destination which boasted a fine mix of retail, hotels, restaurants and bars. “The Abbey did not open last year,

most primary schools have not gone outside of the county for their school tours, we’ve missed the bounce here. If that was open, it would have been an area to visit”.

Howard continued, “We’ve an incredible ruin that nobody can get access to. It is appalling that it is sitting there locked up,” the Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council fumed. Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) backed Howard’s sentiments.

Ennis Friary was the very last school of Catholic theology to survive the Reformation. The O’Briens of Thomond, who once ruled much of north Munster, founded the medieval Franciscan friary. Referencing the fact that it was carers week, Ann stated, “as well as being a county councillor I am a carer to my wonderful

daughter Nicole”.

She spoke of her vision to assist Ennis’ recovery from the pandemic and acknowledged the efforts of local authority staff as part of this. “I hope this will be the year we gain our standards as a tourism town, Ennis is open for business”.

LEAN Coasts Clare are leading a visually driven campaign to help tackle increased littering after several coastal communities expressed concern.

With outdoor dining and a lack of foreign travel, everyone is heading west this summer, expressed Coastal Programmes & LEAF Officer within the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce Ray O’Foghlu.

Concern of a potential disaster on top of an already strenuous workload for Clare Clean Coast groups was the catalyst for a video campaign that hopes to “reach young and old, from inside and outside the county”.

With the emphasis on “a positive message for tourism in Clare this summer”, the video offers an insight from several key figures within coastal regions, urging an onus on “personal responsibility.” Maintaining regular contact with coastal groups as part of his role in An Taisce, Ray decided to secure funding from Clean Coasts and Clare County Council in order to kickstart the campaign.

“This is a community driven project,

where people offer their thoughts on summer. With the closure of indoor dining for pubs and the proliferation of takeaway food, we are seeing that many of these boxes don’t fit into the bins. Locals have also raised concerns over drinking in the dunes at Lahinch and Spanish Point. They are very apprehensive about fires being lit there and littering as well as the overall health and well being of the dune system.”

The video was filmed by Ray and Liscannor resident and videographer Kevin L. Smith, over a weekend, travelling between Doolin and Kilkee. The video features Farmer and Guide Pat Sweeney, Ferry Operator Eugene Garrihy, Senator Roisin Garvey (GP), Snamhaí Sasta’s June Curtin, Cllr.

Cillian Murphy (FF), hotelier John Burke as well as several other key coastal figures in Clare.

“The video shows the aesthetics of the Clare coast quite well. We wanted to go with a video format as it is more shareable and will reach a varied audience in age and location. It’s a positive message as we see that areas like West Clare are quite reliant on tourism. The main message is that there will never be enough bins along our coastal communities.

“Each and every one of us must take personal responsibility wherever we go this summer,” Ray, who is an environmental scientist concluded.

Wool project brings STEPPING INTO THE LIGHT delight to Clouna

by CIAN O’BROIN CHILDREN at Scoil Cholmcille, Clouna expressed sheer delight after being acquainted with the story of wool as part of a creative project for Cruinniú na nÓg Clare.

The planned event, on The Story of Wool called "From Farm to Fantastic Fabric and Felt" catered for schoolchildren from Junior Infants to Sixth Class and explained, from a heritage perspective, the use of and application of wool, allowing the children to document the process through video and film was released on the Cruinniú na nÓg website on Saturday.

School Principal Éadaoin Ryan outlined that the children have learned the process of how felt is made through the bonding wool fibres together and have designed and made their own pieces of felt.

Through this technique, they have designed their own pencil cases.

The aim of the project, she added, was to “open up a world of abstract creative opportunity” for the children at the Ennistymon school.

Stages from start to finish will assist them in increasing their “understanding of the importance of local and national produce” by engaging with local sheep farmers. Through the work of artist Susanna Anker, the children will familiarise themselves with different types of wool and their stories, learning older techniques through the use of a spindle to spin wool as well as a spinning wheel and on to the methods associated with plant dying the wool.

After the wet felting phase, the children will learn a number of felt making techniques and will be given creative control to take the project in whatever direction they see fit. A creative video diary will capture the creative process through a videographer to “collate the pupil’s work into a short film.”

NTERNATIONAL Men's Health Week always begins on the Monday before Father's Day and ends on Father's Day itself. During 2021, it will run from Monday 14th until Sunday 20th June.

Each year, there is also a specific theme. During 2021, the island of Ireland will be focusing upon 'Making the Connections', which encourages men to rebuild their relationships and everyone is being asked to 'check in, check up and check it out'

as we continue to try to overcome the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On Fathers’ Day, we remember and honour dads, grandfathers, uncles, and all the men, living and deceased, who tirelessly and selflessly gave of themselves for their families with unconditional love. It is a good time to also recall the exemplary role-model and patron saint of fathers, Saint Joseph the foster father of Jesus.

Saint Joseph experienced the same difficulties in life we all do, yet

he lived an exemplary life and established an ideal that is well-worth emulating for all fathers who have come after him.

Saint Joseph was a man of compassion, empathy, love and caring. He was a man possessed of unwavering faith in God.

Thought for the week

As your thought for the week, make your dad feel the most special man in the world by showing your care, love and affection especially now as we come out of "Lockdown".

To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors. We all know how our parents cared for us over the years and gave us every little thing that we ever needed.

Love them, respect them, and care for them. Most of all let your dad know how much you love him not just for Father's Day but for all time.

In being a dad to Mia and Sophie I have learned how to be a better listener, to be more compassionate, tender and patient.

However, the most important thing that I may have learned from being a dad is to be respectful.

I believe being a dad has helped me to better respect the gift of life, the people and friends in my life and the people around me whom I come into contact with. Writing this thought for the week has helped me to realize that Fathers’ Day is so much more than a celebration of fathers.

It’s a celebration of all of the people in our lives like our parents, our wives, our friends, and the father figures who help father’s carry out their important role each and every day.

So be truly grateful for your dad and for the other father-like figures that have selflessly supported you in your life.

To my Dad, Ricey, thank you for all the things you've led me and my siblings through and taught us and continue to do.

Through and through you've shown me the ropes. Helping me in anything and everything I face.

Everyday you're there for me by simply calling your name. Daddy, if you end up reading this at some point, I love you.

TRONG East Clare links will help to celebrate a tribute to Maureen Flavin Sweeney (pictured right) in Mayo on Saturday.

During World War 2, in 1944, on the day she turned 21 years old, Maureen Flavin (Sweeney) changed the course of history. On Saturday June 19th at 5pm in Sonas Nursing home in Belmullet, Co. Mayo there will be a celebration of these events, and a tribute to 98 year old Maureen.

At 1am on June 3rd 1944 Maureen, from Knockanure, Co. Kerry, was working as a post office assistant in Blacksod, Co. Mayo. She examined a barometer and noted the air pressure was dropping rapidly. This signified that a major Atlantic storm was coming to this remote part of Ireland and would blow right across Western Europe.

One of Maureen’s duties in the post office was to record this and other metrological information and ring it in to the met office in Dublin. What Maureen didn’t know was that this information, from the most westerly station in Europe, was being sent to the Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force, in England, and would land on the desk of United States Four Star General Dwight D. Eisenhower who was then Supreme Commander of the combined allied forc-

es. Her readings confirmed for the meteorologists in General Eisenhower’s office that it was wise to postpone Operation Overlord or what later became known as D-Day for 24 hours, and that the allies should stand down all associated activities until the weather cleared, and this break in the weather which Maureen and the Sweeney family also reported allowed the invasion to go ahead on June 6th.

When John J. Kelly, who led the design and production of the modern landing craft, heard the story of Maureen Sweeney, he decided that this story had to be told. John an annual visitor to Feakle requested Eoin O’Hagan, his friend, to research Maureen Sweeney and her story.

John then approached the World War Two Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, of which he was a director and requested official recognition of Maureen and the Sweeney family by the museum. The World War Two museum have sent a letter to Maureen that John J. Kelly will read during the tribute on June 19th.

S I write this, the sun is splitting the rocks and there is an ever so gentle breeze. Perfect weather for some outside dining.

I’m going to have some people over for some al fresco dining and the main course I will be doing is a lot of work and needs some minding.

With this in mind I have decided to do a dessert that I can have ready well in advance and dishing up will cause the minimum amount of fuss.

YOU WILL NEED: • 500g Mascarpone • 500g cream • 500ml coffee • One pack of sponge ladyfinger biscuits • 50 ml Marsalla or Brandy • 60g caster sugar • 30 g cocoa powder or 2 Cadbury Flakes

Step 3 Smooth off the top layer, cover in cocoa powder or smashed up chocolate flakes. Leave to set in the fridge for a few hours.

Step 4 Serve that bad boy up. You should easily get six portions from this dish.

This is the simplest version of a a Tiramisu that I know of, and is designed

to be done quickly and with minimum fuss. Traditionally Tiramisu is served on its own or perhaps with an espresso on the side .

EMOGRAPHY is destiny,” this a quote

by French sociologist was coined to describe the European real estate situation of the 19th century.

Over the years I have often pondered on that simple quote as to how it pertained to agriculture especially with the world’s rapidly growing population.

With the environment and climate being the main theme of discussions in recent years, it is easy to forget that food security is our number one goal.

We are told that we are within decades of a world population numbering almost 10 billion people. In a world where 690 million people still go to bed

hungry every night, it is surely a symptom of western comfort that we can speak of climate mitigation measures such as in the recent climate bill approved

by Government with little thought for its effects on global food supply.

China has recently allowed couples to have up to three children, this is bound to lead to further demands on the global food supply. The Chinese are not able to feed themselves from their own resources so much of their food is imported and much of our produce goes to China especially in terms of animal proteins like baby formula.

China is just one example of a growing population that needs to be fed. Global food production will have to rise by 70 per cent by the

year 2050 in order to feed the residents of the globe.

Where is all this extra food production going to come from? I have spoken before of the lack of new blood entering agriculture which all leads back to demography. Add this to a rapidly growing population, it all points to higher food prices. Agriculture will be a career of great opportunity much of this owing to the fact that the number of farmers are declining.

If you look at technology, money has poured into Ag tech startups and Ag tech is destined to play a huge role in the farm of the future but it will not replace the farmer of the future.

Those who plot a course as farmers of the future have the potential to create great wealth as opportunity exists where others have abdicated responsibility.

Let’s just hope agriculture will be at the leading edge of business going forward not the bleeding edge as the sacrificial lamb for climate change mitigation.

Oh what a difference a year makes, this day last year we were feeding zero grazed grass under the paddock wire as a buffer feed to the milking herd. Today we are mowing surplus paddocks of grass on the dairy platform. We have been consistently recording growth rates of over 100kg/ hectare for the past 10 days.

Currently we are measuring the farm twice weekly as things are changing fast.

With ground out for reseeding, we are stocked a little heavier so we have to be that bit extra judicious with our grazing management. The software such as the pasture base app and the grasshopper empower us to make higher quality decisions but managing grass is as much an art as it is a science and sometimes we have to listen to our gut when making the final call on any decision.

‘I’ll believe it when I see it’

EXT week’s Clare County Council meeting will prove one of the more decisive for the future of Clare, and in particular Ennis, for some time.

Several Councillors are set to bring forward plans for an Ennis 2040 Designated Activity Company, or DAC, in order to attract investment funds for the county town and its hinterland from both national and European fund sources.

This is a vehicle that has been used to great effect in many other locations, notably Limerick. There, an initial outlay of a €32 million loan, approved by elected representatives, has so far netted a further €125m in urban renewal funds. This compares to a total of just €8m that has so far been secured for all of County Clare. Clearly, we are falling behind other counties in the battle for investment and securing Government grants, and something needs to be done. The DAC is set to be populated with people mainly from a business background from the county, alongside a small number of Ennis based Councillors.

However, there is some opposition to the plan amongst the elected members of the Council, and others undecided with valid questions and concerns.

Some have pointed to queries about the governance and accountability of the DAC to the local authority. A valid point and one that needs to be clearly addressed prior to any vote on the matter.

The proposed board does look strong in terms of business acumen and local authority representation, but I would argue that there should, perhaps, be one or two community interests represented on it who don’t themselves have a direct business interest in the

town, nor a direct political interest. Ideally, these people would be of the community and would have at least some level of experience in state boards and governance. This should allay some Councillors’ fears by addressing independent oversight concerns.

Another concern some Councillors have expressed is that the vehicle is aimed only at Ennis and its surrounds, but many other towns, villages and rural parts of the county will not be directly aided by it. This is of course correct and a valid concern.

Rural Clare is in dire need of further investment, and with an estimated 20% of local property tax (LPT) leaving the county, it leaves a degree of resentment. Nevertheless, despite changes to the LPT system recently announced, which will see all monies raised in a given county stay there in future, results of this change are yet to be seen.

it when I see it”, even if the announcement by the coalition is a welcome one.

Until such a time, the historic underinvestment in the west, north and east of the county needs to be address. That said, that is not a good reason to stop the DAC from proceeding.

It stands to reason that Ennis works as a significant economic engine for the county as a whole, seeing as roughly a quarter the population of Clare live in Ennis.

Sean Lemass famously

said, “A rising tide raises all ships”, and this will also be true of the DAC plan which would undoubtedly see a positive knock on for the rest of the county in tandem. If successful, there would be a clear case for a similar program or DAC for rural Clare to include the county’s other urban areas outside of the county town.

Councillors are correct to raise concerns and try ensuring that public money is put to the best use possible, with the best oversight and governance possible.

Afterall, this is literally their job. But in my opinion, for all that is worth, this represents a huge opportunity for Ennis and Clare at large to really push ourselves forward economically and socially. Over the course of the bank holiday weekend, in enjoying the sights of the county with my Dub fiancée, she remarked how much potential there really is in the area that remains untapped.

In her words, while taking in a picnic break at the Port of Clare in Clarecastle, if such an amenity were in Dublin, there would be proper development for use of the river for leisure crafting and water sports, public benches, food markets and coffee stalls.

Similarly, there are still a lot of vacant properties in the middle of Ennis town, crying out for new business and building facades that betray a lack of investment going back decades now, with large sections of Ennis town centre having a distinct 1980s/90s architecture that is well past its sell by date. With borrowing costs at historic lows, and Ennis set to become a University town, now is the time to invest in our county to let it grow. As an advocate of Keynesian economics, such a plan makes perfect sense to me.

INSTEAD of gathering at Tim Smythe Park, Relay for Life Ennis will be gathering virtually again this year to help raise awareness and needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

Auriol Considine, Relay for Life Ennis Chairperson, explains, "We are challenging teams to collectively walk 240kms by 19th June sticking with the 24 theme of the actual event.

We have some other enthusiastic teams that have decided to do their own events such as hiking Mullaghmore and Carrauntoohill or running in Lahinch. “We are also premiering interviews with local people who have been impacted by Cancer on our Facebook page.

We hope that other patients, survivors and their families will get some comfort from hearing similar stories and know they are not alone in their journey.”

The Irish Cancer Society has increased its services for cancer patients and their families during this global pandemic. Hence, fundraisers, like this, are essential to continue this support. Funds raised by Relay for Life helps to provide volunteer drivers to bring patients to chemotherapy, night nurse care, family supports and end of life care.

OUR Clare projects are among the 139 to be funded across all 31 local authorities under the Community Monuments Fund.

A total of €4.2m has been allocated under the fund which represents a €1m increase on last year when it was first established. Kilkerrin Battery Fort (€29,129), Clonrush Burial Ground (€30,351), Templemaley Church and Burial Ground (€13,478) and Kilfenora Cathedral (€29,950) are the four Clare projects selected, two nominations from the county were unsuccessful in their bid

for funding.

Kilkerrin Battery Fort located near Labasheeda was built by British forces between 1811 and 1814, it was one of half a dozen structures constructed to stop a threatened invasion by Napoleonic forces. It remained in use for much of the 19th century and later fell into disrepair but since the 1980s, there have been efforts made to restore this 200-year-old structure.

Clare TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) believed the funding for Kilkerrin “will make a significant difference to these efforts by the community of Labasheeda”.

Clonrush Burial Ground is the only Stream 1 project approved in Clare, essential repairs and capital works for the conservation and repair of archaeological monuments have been sanctioned.

Stobart Air collapses

Crerand joins Clare Echo crew

ALL of Aer Lingus’ regional flights operated by Stobart Air have been cancelled with immediate effect.

A franchise agreement between Stobart Air and Aer Lingus has been terminated. Stobart Air have now ceased operations and appointed a liquidator.

In a statement, Stobart Air said the decision to cease operations and appoint a liquidator was "unavoidable and difficult" and that all 480 of its staff have been informed of the decision.

It also apologised to its customers for the inconvenience that the cancellation of flights at short notice would cause.

The airline, which is owned by UKbased Esken group, said in April that a new owner had been identified - Isle of Man-based start-up Ettyl.

"However, it has emerged that the funding to support this transaction is no longer in place and the new owner is now unable to conclude the trans-

action”.

Services from Dublin to Kerry, Donegal, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Newquay are cancelled.

Routes from Belfast to Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Exeter and East Midlands are also affected.

The Clare Echo reported in April of this year that flights operated by Stobart Air from Shannon Airport to Birmingham and Edinburgh were to be dropped.

No Aer Lingus services have flown out of Shannon Airport since March 2020. Last month, Aer Lingus announced it was to close its cabin crew base at Shannon Airport.

Former Junior Minister and ex Clare TD, Pat Breen (FG) said that Stobart Air ceasing trading was a major blow for the connectivity and cross channel short flights from regional airports.

He believed the announcement was “particularly devastating for Shannon Airport’s future.

"Government must protect this strategic connectivity”.

A

MBITION, talent and affability are just a few words that spring to mind when talking to makeup artist Lauren Sexton. The Shannon native has recently set up her own business from her base in Smithstown and at just 25 years old, has a list of accomplishments that defy her youth.

A certified fashion week make-up artist has worked with local celebrities including Celia Holman Lee and her models, along with the Cranberries front woman Delores O'Riordan just three weeks before her tragic passing. These are among the strings on the bow of Lauren, who was inspired to establish her own business as she reflected on her career earlier this year while she was isolating due to a Covid diagnosis.

The former St Caiman's Secondary School student finished her studies at the School of Makeup Artistry in Galway in 2015 and started building up her own clientele before landing a job at Benefit Cosmetics in Brown Thomas. In just four months, she was poached by the manager at Mac, something which Lauren admits was a dream job at the time. "I stayed with Mac in Brown Thomas for four years and then moved to Mac in Shannon Airport and did two years there."

During her time in Shannon, Lauren's credentials progressed as she completed her fashion week certificate and then won a competition to work on the performing acts backstage at the Tomorrowland Music Festival in Belgium, where she was the only makeup artist from Ireland, something she says was an "amazing experience".

"By that stage I had begun to really build up a clientele so I decided to go out on my own. I had Covid myself in February and after that I plucked up a bit of courage with some encouragement from my dad James who has a unit in Smithstown with his events company Hiya. We did up a room, my 17-year-old brother Adam put the floors in and we painted it," recounts Lauren. During the lockdown, Lauren admits to "hitting an all-time low" with not being able to work and not content with waiting for restrictions to left, she sold out two online makeup masterclass events with a capacity of 100 tickets each. This is another area where Lauren will continue to explore into the future as her

business profile grows.

Lauren describes her subtle makeup style as soft, glowy and glam and while she uses a wide range of products, her 'go-to' brands include Mac, Charlotte Tilbury, NARS and Estee Lauder. Having officially opened the doors to her business last month, Lauren is focusing much of her attentions on the wedding trade and says that due to her variety of experience, she's comfortable and accomplished on working on all ages from 13 up to 90. In her studio she is offering brow and lash services as well as makeup at her studio in Smithstown.

The reaction from the public has already been overwhelmingly positive admits Lauren, who says customers are really struck by arriving into a glamorous studio in what is traditionally an industrial area in Shannon. She's also been surprised by the level of bookings coming in already. "To be honest, going back to work I thought everything would be quiet. I didn't think anyone would be booking in for anything much but most people have said they just want to treat themselves now and I think with weddings, people are just going ahead with smaller weddings or putting it off to 2022. It's been quite busy. Makeup will only really pick up from July onwards as you can go out now, you can book nights out and nights away but weddings are just as busy.

"I have 2023 filling up already. People will book two or three years in advance. I think

when people book a wedding, the first thing they think of is hair & makeup - you'd think it would be the opposite - so it's definitely a priority."

Corofin eatery a nod to local Yellow Submarine from 1966

EMOL Piotrowski has a vision for the Yellow Submarine, the new restaurant and pub he’s opened in Corofin. He wants to see it become more than just an eatery or a place to get a pint. He’d like it to become part of the fabric of this small, North Clare town.

“You have nothing to do? Come in, sit down, have a cup of coffee, read the newspaper, relax. People are suffering now from being at home for so long. We’d like to make this a gathering place,” he said. Someone has already approached him about holding a chess club there, for instance, exactly the kind of thing he’d like to see happen. “The idea is to make it a hub, not a pub.”

Piotrowski is the manager of the Yellow Submarine, which opened for outdoor service on June 7. Actually the name itself is a nod not to the Beatles, as many may expect, but rather continues the theme of building a Corofin community base.

It harkens to the 1966 launching of a DIY submarine made by local mechanic and inventor James Tierney.

“He made it in the shed from oil cans,” said Thibaut Caron, the owner of the Yellow Submarine. “And he painted it yellow. So we said, why not call it the Yellow Submarine, for the craic, like.” And there’s certainly no mistaking the newly painted bright

Both men live in Corofin, and have for a number of years. Piotrowski worked in management positions at the Savoy Hotel in Limerick, the Armada Hotel in Spanish Point and Monks in Balleyvaughan, among others. Most recently, he worked as a sales manager for Caron’s company, Cafe7, a Galway-based supplier of coffee equipment, gourmet foods and drinks, and coffee. The coffee comes from Caron House, his family’s coffee roasting business in France. Caron proudly says his sister

“I always wanted to start something from scratch,” said Piotrowski, “and make something that reflected my vision.” When the former Daly’s Bar was put on the market, they checked it out. “It was a good investment at a good price,” said Caron, and boasts a large outdoor area behind the building, including a paved pavilion and a field now scattered with picnic tables.

The Yellow Submarine menu offers a variety of pub food like burgers, chowders, chili and nachos, as well

as more substantive dinner meals with a nod to the Irish palate – like sausage and mash and North Clare bacon and Cabbage. Local beer from the Western Herd Brewery and whiskey from JJ Corry is offered.

“We’re going to be sourcing our food locally as possible. The main idea is to remove chemicals from the dish. We want people to eat just a little bit healthier,” said Piotrowski.

Caron carefully selected the Cafe7 foods and drinks to ensure they are organic and natural – including food products, a line of teas and infusions, wines, large variety of fair trade syrups, fizzy drinks, fruit juices, and spices. All are available in a store at The Yellow Submarine.

“The idea is that over time, everything you had in the restaurant you can take home,” said Piotrowski. “You liked an organic cola or the wine? You can buy a bottle. You liked the bread? You can take home a loaf.”

Although the village is dotted with shuttered storefronts, both men are sure that the town is ready for a rebirth. Piotrowski points, for instance, to the fact that Corofin will be on the planned West Clare Greenway – a walking and biking path that will follow the route of the old West Clare Railway, slated to be completed in 2025.

"I think there’s big potential here,” he said.

The Yellow Submarine is open daily from noon until 11pm.

Not even a late fightback from their hosts could dampen Clooney-Quin’s spirits as they garnered a much needed opening victory on Saturday afternoon.

Without a competitive victory since capturing the Senior B almost two years previously, it was a significant marker that saw Clooney-Quin dominate for the majority and even hold an 11 point cushion by the turn of the final quarter.

The final action of the weekend certainly didn’t disappoint as Crusheen and Broadford played out a tough opening battle before the former prevailed on Sunday evening. Despite a number of newcomers on both sides, Crusheen just managed to keep their noses in front for the majority to earn two valuable opening points for new manager Kevin Sheehan.

A clinical goal from debutant Luke Ketelaar entering the final quarter appeared to be the final nail in the home side’s coffin at 1-17 to 0-14.

However, 1-1 from Stiofan McMahon would revive Broadford’s challenge, eventually lessening the deficit to the minimum. A second 20 metre free from the county panelist would be stopped deep into additional time though as Crusheen held on for the win.

Goals from Colin Crehan, Sean Cotter, Bryan Donnellan and Jacob Loughnane saw O’Callaghan’s Mills began the new Clare Cup 1B campaign in ruthless fashion with a 4-25 to 0-17 victory over an understrength Éire Óg in Ennis on Saturday evening.

Goals were also central to St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield’s 3-25 to 2-18 victory over Sixmilebridge’s second string on away soil on Saturday evening.

Newmarket-on-Fergus also dug out a gritty away victory by 1-21 to 0-20 when flipping a four point deficit into a four point victory amidst a seesaw second half in Killaloe on Friday evening.

Tulla produced a similar turnaround in fortunes with a rousing 0-19 to 0-17 comeback win over Wolfe Tones, having found themselves trailing by four by half-time.

However, the biggest steal of the opening weekend was in Whitegate on Saturday evening as a strong home finish with the last four points saw them pip Clarecastle to the post by 1-21 to 2-17.

some excellent football and I was very very happy with it. We were very solid in defence. We got ragged in the third quarter and we need to sort out a few things. Towards the end experienced players. Lee (Keegan) and Aidan (O’Shea) got on a lot of ball to calm things down.

2020 Under 14A finalists Sixmilebridge and Inagh-Kilnamona lead the way in the Under 15A Hurling Championship equivalent after cementing backto-back victories on Monday evening.

In an early battle for supremacy in the group, a James Hegarty goal entering the final ten minutes proved decisive in edging Inagh-Kilnamona past previously unbeaten St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield by 2-09 to 1-10 in Gurteen.

Goal scoring sensation Eamonn Breen took his tally to seven in just two matches when a goal in either half helped Sixmilebridge to overcome Éire Óg by 2-15 to 0-03.

In the final Under 15A tie, midfielder Michael Collins produced a 0-13 masterclass to get Clonlara off the mark with a 2-22 to 1-13 home victory over a Clarecastle side that only took one of ten goal opportunities.

The entertainment value was only accentuated in the Under 15B&C Championship as there was an average of five goals scored per match in the nine Round 2 ties.

Michael Power and Sean Arthur were Newmarket-on-Fergus’ twin threats once more as they combined for all but two points of their side’s 3-18 to 3-09 victory over Tulla.

Last year’s Under 14B finalists Kilmaley also preserved their perfect start with a 2-15 to 1-09 win over Clooney-Quin.

First half majors through Gareth Murphy, Keelan O’Donoghue and Ian O’Brien fortified Cratloe’s advantage in advance of a storming Broadford finish before holding out for a 3-21 to 6-08 win.

The margins were equally tight for Feakle/Killanena to secure a first triumph of the campaign against Corofin/Ruan by 2-16 to 3-11 while only the minimum edged O’Callaghan’s Mills/Bodyke to an opening win over Ballyea by 4-13 to 1-21.

Whitegate, Wolfe Tones and the Banner are the early frontrunners in Group 2. Timely goals earned Whitegate a 4-11 to 0-15 derby win over Scariff/ Ogonnelloe, the Banner had seven to spare over Ennistymon by 1-17 to 1-10 while the Shannon side got past Parteen thanks to a 4-15 to 2-09 success.

Tubber to a breakthrough 1-13 to 2-06 victory over Smith O’Brien’s in Tubber on Monday evening.

The inaugural Under 13 Football Championships also got underway last Friday evening. 22 teams are competing for the three majors honours, seven of which compete in Division 1 that saw St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield, Clondegad and St Breckans’s record opening victories.

A first half trio of goals from full-forward Colm Daly laid the foundations for Doora/Barefield’s 8-15 to 0-10 away win over Lissycasey.

Dara Kennedy raided for an even quicker treble as his hat-trick came in a dramatic second quarter that saw Clondegad produced a ten point turnaround on their way to a 5-7 to 3-8 win over hosts Éire Óg.

The first round top-scorer award was actually secured by St Breckan’s centre-forward Cathal McNamara who finished with 4-3, with all four goals coming in a compelling seven goal exchange with neighbours Ennistymon that finished 4-11 to 3-07 in the home side’s favour in Lisdoonvarna.

In the Under 13 Division 2&3 Football Championship, 64 goals were scored through the seven group matches, with Doonbeg, Cooraclare and the peninsula amalgamation of Naomh Eoin/O’Curry’s/St Senan’s Kilkee taking the whip hand in Group 1 while Clarecastle, Cratloe, Parteen and the Banner got off to winning starts in Group 2.

The Under 13 Hurling Championship equivalent commences this Friday evening.

Miltown Malbay’s Paradise Mission upsets the odds MILTOWN Malbay owned Paradise Mission caused a big upset in the final heat of the Treaty Cup Open on Saturday night.

There was a massive shock as Drahan Jet tasted defeat for the first time in his last five starts in the 350 yards sweepstake as Paradise Mission owned by Miltown Malbay’s Sean Meade landed the spoils.

Drahan Jet was expected to take all of the beating after giving the clock a real

bend. Rounding the opening bend Knockdrum Lilly and Domhan Glory joined the leader out front with the Martin Griffin of Lissycasey owned Room To Stop closing just behind the trio in the cat bird seat. Off the home bend the gaps opened for Room To Stop and the son of Laughill Blake & Nebraska Scot got the better of Sports Glory on the run to the line to score by half a length in 19.42.

Saturdays night’s card was an A6 graded 575 yards contest in which Colossal Knight led towards the outer on the long run towards the opening bend where An Puma Dubh saved ground along the inner to enter the back straight a close up second. Racing along the back straight Colossal Knight and An Puma Dubh raced stride for stride until the Gerard Cooney of Shannon owned An Puma Dubh edged a couple of lengths clear at the third bend and although Fink Wood stayed on late in the straight An Puma Dubh prevailed by two lengths in 32.17.

This Novice 350 yards contest developed into a match from a very early stage as from trap the Claire Davoren of Ennistymon owned Wilbrook Bee broke smartly on the wide outside to lead as You The Man showed pace along the inner racing towards the

opening bend. At the bend though the outcome was effectively settled as Wilbrook Bee cut to the rails and You The Man ran very wide and this allowed Wilbrook Bee(Bull Run Bolt-Tiermana Soda) draw right away to score by five and a half lengths in 19.71.

At the fourth time of asking the Martin Cronin and Jack Markham of Ennis owned Cragbrien Spider got off the mark in race five as he made all the running to defeat Black Flyer by a length and three parts in 30.27. Trapping well the soon Romeo Recruit and Cragmoher Susie led by two lengths rounding the opening bend as Black Flyer tracked him round along the rails. Racing along the back Cragbrien Spider extended his advantage and was allways in command out front.

In the early strides of race six in this S7 graded contest Clydagh Matt, Burnpork Lexi and Malbay Dixie were all prominent but as they settled down the Alanna & Michael Browne of Cree owned Burnpark Lei displayed the best early pace to lead from Malbay Dixie approaching the opening bend. Rounding the bend Burnpark Lexi took couple of lengths out of her rivals and the daughter of Adios Alonso & Burnpark Grainne stayed on well up the straight to score by two and a half lengths in 19.29.

In race eight the Ger and Leroy Cremin of Miltown Malbay owned Malbay Daisy was another winner to taken all on the night as the son of Skywalker Puma and Farrochmore stayed on well all the way to defeat Aulton Messi by a length and a half in 29.40. Smartly into his stride on the wide outside Malbay Casey led Bogger Maggie and Aulton Messi.

Racing down the back the leader extended his advantage and with the chasing pack crowding slightly at the third bend Malbay Casey was in complete control from this point.

SOUTH OF IRELAND RETURNS

THE South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship returns to the world-famous links at Lahinch Golf Club after a break of 24 months due to the cancellation of the tournament last year. The 119th hosting of the Championship commences on Wednesday July 21.

150 of Ireland’s leading amateur golfers will play in the 36-hole strokeplay qualifier over Wednesday and Thursday, with the top 64 qualifying for the matchplay part of the competition which starts Friday and concludes with the semi-finals and final on Sunday July 25.

KILRUSH GOLF CLUB: Vice captain Noel Kilkenny’s prize was played for at Kilrush at the weekend when the winner was Rory Flynn(17) with 45 points. He had one to spare over Martin McNamara (27). Rory Lillis (8) was third with 41 followed by Vincent Lillis (18), also with 41 points. Shane Lillis (scratch) won the gross with 37.

Joe Linnane (13) won division 1 with 40 points, Pat J. Shannon (16) won division 2 with 40 and Patrick O’Dea (20) won division 3 with 41 points.

SHANNON GOLF CLUB: The June medal was played for at Shannon at the weekend when Frank Casey (14) emerged as the winner with 63. He had a stroke to spare over Alan O’Hanlon (26) who was followed by Brian Mullins (16) with 65, Aaron Costelloe (16) with 65, Barry Deasy (10) with 66 and Fergus McGrath (21), also with 66. Chris Willets (4) won the gross with 70.

Meanwhile Woodstock recorded an impressive 4-1 victory over Shannon in the opening round of the senior cup last week.

The menbers of the Woodstock team were Cormac Walsh, Brian Gilligan, Ross Kelly, Tony Cleary and Jason Considine. They will play East Clare in the next round.

ENNIS GOLF CLUB: The senior ladies competition at Ennis last week was won by Claire Ruane, Deirdre Molyneaux and Joan Cullinan Coote with 49.7 from Mary Lenihan, Marie Dilleen and Kathleen Pyne with 50 with third spot filled by Carmel Verling, Ann White and Margaret Flanagan with 50 5/6.

Wall back in chair as CSSL start announced

HANNON’S Brendan Wall has been elected as the new Chairman of the Clare Schoolboys/Schoolgirls Soccer League (CSSL) while a provisional return date for action has been set.

A planned start of the season in June came asunder when six of the seven members of the CSSL committee resigned from their posts. This followed a heated online AGM in April that the media were not invited to and a subsequent letter from Ennis Town delegate Tony Downey in which he committed to continue asking difficult questions of the CSSL. An attempt by the SFAI to put an interim committee in place fell through when it emerged that not all members selected were Garda vetted.

Efforts to coax back former Secretary Caroline O’Brien and Fixtures Secretary Conor Twomey both of Shannon Town Utd AFC to their respective positions were unsuccessful.

At an online EGM on Sunday, Brendan Wall of Shannon Hibs was elected as the new Chairperson of the CSSL. Sporting Ennistymon’s Eddie Crowe takes on the role of Secretary with Cathal Jones of Bunratty/ Cratloe elected Treasurer ahead of Downey and Mountshannon Celtic’s Clive Slater the new Registrar.

He paid tribute to the outgoing committee for getting through last season in the midst of the pandemic and noted that their assistance will be “critical” to allow the newly elected officers bed into their roles. “The clubs were unanimous in their wish to have all of the outgoing committee continue in their roles and while this was not possible, I would like to take the opportunity on behalf of the league to thank them for their continuing contribution to Clare soccer”.

Promising Clare teenagers Fern Celtic make history snapped up by Limerick clubs FERN Celtic FC made history on Saturday as the club’s first ever junior men’s side took to the field.

Established in 2001 by Leonard Meaney and Timmy Healy, son of the late Frank after whom the County Grounds in Doora are named after, Fern Celtic began with U11 and U16 teams. Three of the players in those two teams were Declan Meaney, Liam Meaney and Mark Healy.

Over the next number 20 years the club continued to grow with girls and boys teams lining out from U6 all the way to U16 with numerous successes. Up until 2021, there was no opportunity to progress into adult football with the club.

On Saturday, the club made history as Declan (captain), Mark and Liam lined out twenty years on, for the first ever Fern Celtic Junior Men’s team. The club hosted Bunratty Cratloe FC in the tie which also kicked off their twenty year anniversary celebrations.

“It’s a great achievement for the club and is a testament of the hard work and commit-

ment that has gone on for the last 20 years. We now have both Underage and Junior team setup, for male and female players, and our players are able to stay with the one club if they wish from U6 up until they decide to stop playing, and hopefully begin to start coaching,” club chairman Ciaran Collins stated.

Exciting times are on the horizon for the club, junior manager Richard Cahill predicted. “It is a pleasure to work with a bunch of really decent lads, most of whom are fulfilling their ambition to play for the club they started out with. They are really enjoying coming home and collectively embracing the opportunity to create a road for advancement for the up-coming teenagers.

And those teenagers are a credit to Fern Celtic’s underage coaching”.

As part of the celebrations on Saturday, the club’s new sponsor, Madrassori Doggy Day Care Centre, owned by Sile Lynch presented with their first set of jerseys.

SEVERAL Clare teenagers have put pen to paper on new deals with Limerick FC and Treaty Utd ahead of the start of the upcoming season.

Treaty Utd U19’s side will be bolstered by the addition of three new Clare signings. Fionn McInerney who played with Shannon Town Utd since he was five years old has added to the Banner contingent at Treaty Utd, he formerly captained the Shannon club to League and Cup glory along with representing Clare at Kennedy Cup level.

Bridge Utd duo Scott Kirkland and Adam Fitzpatrick have also linked up with Treaty’s U19s for the coming season. The pair picked up Youths League and Cup winners medals in 2020. Scott has featured on Clare squads throughout his schoolboys career while Adam previously captained Limerick FC at U15 and U17 level, last season he made his first appearance for the Sixmilebridge club’s A and B sides.

Ex Clare Youths captain and Bridge Utd defender Liam Buckley was one of the first signings for Treaty Utd’s U19 side.

ed Ennis Town FC as he links up with Limerick City FC’s U17 side. Last season, he lined out at U16, U17 and Youths level for Ennis Town winning a League and Cup double with the U17 side.

Jason’s ex teammates at Ennis Town recently voted him as the ‘most influential player’ at a club awards presentation.

Ennis’ Eddie Shaw will also be linking up with Jason and the Limerick FC U17 outfit. Shaw has left Avenue Utd for the League of Ireland following a very impressive underage career with the Roslevan based club.

The versatile player has been praised by ex coaches for his work ethic and leadership.

Sixmilebridge’s Lee Mulready will be in action with Treaty Utd’s U17 side for the coming season, he lined out with Limerick last season, a definite highlight included scoring twice on his debut in a 6-2 win against Cobh Ramblers.
