Dowling defended the measures, “there is nothing disgraceful about trying to maintain the services we provide”. Head of Finance, Noeleen Fitzgerald explained that a return to the standard rate of the LPT would leave the Council with a loss of €1.4m while the proposed reduction would equal a €2.75m loss.

Barefield’s Cllr Ann Norton (IND) warned of a “very difficult winter” ahead. “People are finding it difficult to put food on the table and are scared of what is coming. A counter-proposal by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) to reduce the LPT was defeated 23-3, he said “the cost of living has gone out of control”. Those in favour of maintaining the status quo referenced the reduction in rate bands set by the Government last December which will see some homeowners paying less tax. Dr Loïc Guyon, Honorary Consul of France for the Midwest region recalled that it was almost three years ago when Aer Lingus had announced a new route from Shannon to Paris which was subsequently cancelled. Dr Guyon predicted “a huge boost to French tourism, the West of Ireland and Irish tourism but the economic impact will go beyond tourism”.

Dr Styles explained, “The agrifood sector alone cannot achieve net-zero by 2050 and must look towards offsets using new forests comprising a mix of varied conif erous and broadleaf tree species that also support biodiversity and wider amenity value”.

Dr Pietro Iannetta, Head of Eco logical Food Systems at the James Hutton institute, and a co-inves tigator on the study, said: “This research provides an independent approach and critical analysis of current GHG mitigation strategies.

net zero greenhouse gas emis sion status will be difficult to achieve by 2050 and even more challenging to maintain, new re search has revealed.

Using Ireland as a specific case study, 850 randomised scenarios were modelled, with 128 achieving net zero status in the agriculture, forestry, and other land use sector and a further 38 scenarios contrib uted to the achievement of nation al level net zero status.

However, extending this anal ysis to 2100, only 40 – or around 5% – of scenarios maintained net zeroDrstatus.Colm Duffy, Research Fellow at University of Limerick’s School of Engineering and lead author of the paper, explained, “The goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions for 2050 sets clear targets for mea sures relating to energy generation and"However, use. there is a lack of clarity regarding how this is best achieved in the land use sector, which is responsible for one quar ter of global GHG emissions but is also vital for our food security”.

The research, the results of which have just been published in the prestigious Nature Sustain ability journal, show that drastic action is needed in the agri-food and forestry sectors if Ireland is to meet its targets.

Project coordinator, Dr David Styles, Associate Professor in Ag ricultural Sustainability at Univer sity of Galway and adjunct senior

These targets are a key pillar of the Programme for Government; however, scenarios modelled by researchers at University of Lim erick and University of Galway show how difficult these will be to achieve and maintain.

As the share of Ireland’s land under forest cover is among the lowest in Europe, there is high po tential for new planting, Dr Duffy also“Owingnoted.to the rotational nature of commercial forestry, carbon off sets from new forestry will weaken through time, so that only one sce nario tested sustained net-zero at the national level to 2100,” the UL research fellow explained.

The authors note that further research is needed to examine whether future cascading use of harvested wood in the bioeconomy could sustain net-zero indefinitely across a wider range of scenarios. They argue too that higher resolu tion scenario modelling is urgently needed to inform effective climate action by governments, compa nies, and individuals.

New research shows net zero 'difficult to achieve' by 2050

Under the government’s Climate Action Plan, Ireland is commit ted to a legally binding target of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions no later than 2050, and a reduction of 51% by 2030.

"It shows that we must look be yond 2050 to ensure that net-zero is achieved indefinitely through ambitious and strategic partner ships across the agri-food and for estry sectors”.

Thought for the week

Even when things seem totally lost, there are sever al reasons to be thankful. There are a lot of people out there who believe that special occasions are the only time to sit down and count their blessings. I believe that everyday is a reason to be thankful. Instead of complaining about having to go to work, be thankful that you have a job and can take care of your family. Think about all the people out there who can’t work, or those that have lost their jobs due to downsizing and the effects of the economy going bust. You have a lot of reasons to be thankful, if you just take the time to look for them.

hard to be thank ful for anything when it seems that every thing is going wrong in your world and I am not talking about the fact that the bottom has almost fallen out of the economy again, there are enough people talking about that and being so negative about things.

I write this column it is lashing bitoutside, rainit'sabreezyand

Enjoy what you have while you have it, instead of being constantly fixated on what you don’t have!

I am talking about when you might be having one of those days when your child is sick, the washing machine has just spewed soapy water all over the place, and to top it off, your car won’t start! The last thing you want to do is say thank you for any of this. But, there are reasons to be thankful in our lives. First of all, be thankful that your child is at home sick, and not in the hospital. Be thankful that you have such things as a washing machine and a car. There are many out there who don’t have these luxuries.

The gifts you look at as commonplace are the same gifts many others would be absolutely thrilled to be given! Please don’t look down on your blessings – an attitude of gratitude will make room for even more blessings! can take a bit of creative thinking, but if you look deep enough, there are some positive points to focus on. Sometimes these points may seem trivial, but a positive outlook will make being thankful much easier.

honestly I am really feeling the Autumn creeping in. (Knowing my luck the sun will be splitting the rocks when this paper comes out).Anyways, it's at this time of year that I start thinking of winter warmers such as stews, casseroles and most importantly soup.

Let your sunlight lead the way Work hard at what you like to do and try to overcome all obstacles. Laugh at your mistakes and praise yourself for learn ing from them. Pick some flowers and appreciate the beauty of nature. Say hello to strangers and enjoy the people you know.Don’t be afraid to show your emo tions, laughing and crying make you feel better. Love your friends and family, they are the most import ant part of your life. Feel the calmness on a quiet sunny day.

A fellow chef Frank Murphy suggested putting fresh parsley in potato soup as it gives a lovely fresh ness to the dish, so I have incorporated that idea in here to go with my potato and bacon soup. It's a wonderful winter warmer, that should be a heavy dish to eat but it's actually lovely and light thanks to the lift that the fresh Parsley gives

As your thought for the week, be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire. If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don’t know something, as it gives you the opportunity to learn.Bethankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you’re tired and weary, because it means you’ve made a difference. It’s easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings.

Dear Sir, Aer Lingus despite assurances from the likes of Willie Walsh and government ministers that “’sure it’ll all be OK”. It just isn’t. The sale of erstwhile beloved Aer Lingus has been a complete debacle for the people of Ireland. Our, yes, our, national airline is now a poor relation of British Airways. Service is pitiful, fares are not good value and when something goes wrong big brother is nowhere to be seen. Shouts of “You’re on your own Paddy” can be imagined without any difficulty. That’s what happened last weekend. “The system” goes down, flights are cancelled and passengers are completely stranded. Why not rebook them on BA flights to Dublin/Shannon via London? Because they could not be bothered. Shame on them. The sale of Aer LINGUS was a disaster to the people of IRELAND. We been warned. Now, we can’t let anything like that happen again. Lissycasey showed great determination and fight. A goal in the third quarter brought the team right back into it and from then they never looked back. A number of unanswered points from the Ballynacally/Lissycasey side in the latter stages of the second half ensured that the girls took the lead for the very first time in the game. It proved to be a lead that the girls never gave up. When the final whistle blew, the score line read Ballynacally/ Lissycasey 1-10, Skibereen 1-8. There was great scenes of joy and celebration after the game as the players, management and supporters of the team celebrated what was a superb victory.

The Burren Butcher is an online craft butcher offering a limited range of award-winning beef products traceable to farmers in the Burren hinterland. Founder Paula Hawes was a participant on ACORNS 7. “ACORNS was a brilliant investment of my time and has provided many opportu nities over the past 6 months to evaluate and refine product concepts and sales op portunities that provide the greatest return on investment. Being a female in business in rural Ireland during a pandemic was a

lonely place, but I was encouraged and in formed by the different perspectives of my fellow ACORNS and Lead Entrepreneurs when I crucially needed it. My confidence and knowledge have grown over the course of the programme and with my network of fellow ACORNS, I feel equipped to face challenges that The Burren Butcher will en counter over the next five years,” Paula said. Based on a belief that entrepreneurs learn best from each other, ACORNS is centred on interactive round table sessions facilitat ed by successful female entrepreneurs who have started and grown businesses in rural Ireland. These are known as ACORNS Lead Entrepreneurs, and they give their time free of charge to encourage and support the new business owners.

Set up by Ennis native and FAI coach Kieran Ryan, Strike Sport caters its classes to suit the individual child’s needs. There will be classes every Tuesday and Thurs day at Ennis National School along with the highly popular soccer blitz every Sat urday at Gurteen which can be attended by any child. The first session of the au tumn schedule begins on Tuesday, Sep tember 26.

The demand for one-on-one coaching sessions has also grown with Strike Sports’ reputation, with its expert coaching team helping to advance County Clare players to league of Ireland underage set-ups.

Having run a successful programme of workshops and summer camps in Ennis, Gort and Kilrush, Strike Sport begin their autumn schedule later this month with all new members being invited to attend their first session free of cost.

SPORT is inviting chil dren of all abilities to join their weekly sessions which focus on giving participants more contact time with an expert coaching team, where their overall sports coordina tion and self-confidence will be improved through the means of soccer coaching.

“We’ve had a couple of successes with young guys going to Galway United and Treaty in the last couple of weeks, 13 or 14 year olds so that’s starting to pay divi dends for those kids.

For the first time this year, Strike Sport will also run a girls-only weekly class due to demand from parents. Kieran explains, “There’s only one soccer club in Ennis, first of all. I can guarantee there are many in the GAA clubs, the rugby club, the ath letics clubs, who are missing out on the opportunity to play soccer. This is a great stepping stone. We have three or four girls in a couple of classes already, and a few parents have said that younger girls would be more comfortable playing on their own first. There are plenty of girls who want to play sport but aren’t being catered for, to

Strike Sport aims to build confidence on the pitch

Strike Sport was established just prior to the arrival of Covid-19 however Kier an prevailed with the business, stating, “I genuinely believe that, one, there’s genu ine talent in the county, but there’s also loads of kids that just need that extra bit of one-on-one hands-on training. We’ve had a lot of kids that have been lacking in confidence and not as traditionally ath letic and they have undergone enormous improvement.“Thehighlight for me has been parent feedback, they have said to me that their child is more comfortable going back to his teammates and their confidence is through the roof. For kids that are that bit shy or need more advice and coaching for their development, we do a lot of funda mental movements so they generally im prove.“We also have highly-skilled kids which is great, but the mix is very good. The classes are small so they get plenty of coaching time.”

ference. For 40 or 45 minutes we lived with them but they pulled away. They are an ex tremely good side who will go a long way in the championship. Overall we are disappoint ed with our year. We are just not good enough at the moment and we will have to improve. We introduced new players and we have to get back working hard”.

Reigning champions Ballyea will face Cloo ney/Quin with Matt Shannon’s Éire Óg to face off with Inagh/Kilnamona in a repeat of last year’s county semi-final. The line-up is com pleted by the meeting of Cratloe and Newmar ket-on-Fergus.Seniorsurvival is also on the line with four teams in must-win territory. Clarecastle have been drawn with Whitegate while the East Clare clash of Smith O’Briens and Scariff pits the 2021 intermediate champions against the side that claimed the Paddy Browne Cup in 2020.

PJ KELLEHER, FEAKLE SENIOR HURLING MANAGER:

WHITEGATE

“It was a tough battle out there. There's noth ing between Whitegate and Feakle and we ex pected a battle today and by God we got one. It was an end-to-end contest and a draw was probably the fairest outcome. Our big thing today was to get a performance and see where that took us. A lot of lads performed and some others didn't. Shane Mc Grath got some outstand ing scores but he's been doing it year in year out for Feakle. Look it, we are disappointed not to make the last eight because that’s where everybody wants to be but we will regroup and focus on the Senior B in a few weeks time”.

Parteen v Tulla

Parteen versus Tulla is the pick of the Clare IHC last eight ties followed by the North Clare derby between Tubber and Corofin. St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield face Ogonnelloe with Sixmile bridge and Newmarket-on-Fergus doing battle.

“Today was all about coming out of the game healthy and we did that, thank God. The key is to stay healthy and get ready for the quar ter final. Clonlara who had nothing to play for came here today and fought to the end. We know it was a dead rubber but every club has pride and nobody wants to lose. The knockout stages are next and it brings a different psyche. We were knocked out by Éire Óg last year and we are mentally still getting over that. We have to be ready in two weeks time. It's the business end now”.
