O CLARE is unlikely to be put under lockdown measures again, health officials have stated. 39 cases have been recorded in the county over the space of 14 days. Most recent figures have shown additional diagnoses on Tuesday (3) and Wednesday (5) while six adult members of Cratloe GAA club have tested positive for the virus causing a delay to the local GAA championships. Extreme measures were announced for Kildare, Laois and Offaly on Friday last with the counties entering into phase two lockdown. Across the country, 833 cases were recorded between July 26th and August 8th. More than 300 of those were in Co Kildare. Per 100,000 of population, the fourteen day incidences of the virus stood at 138.4 (Kildare), 109 (Offaly) and 83.8 (Laois),
Clare had the highest incidence of cases outside of the three at 26.1 per 100,000 of population. Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn offered assurance that the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) had no plans to impose a lockdown on other parts of the country including Co Clare at present but cautioned that the rise in cases was worrying. A colour-coded scheme is being planned by the Department of Health to indicate the threat of the virus in different counties. Kilmihil GP, Dr Michael Harty believes it is unlikely Clare will have to experience another lockdown. “Here in Clare we don’t have that intense cluster in meat processing plants and in Direct Provision centres. I know there has been a substantial increase in the number of cases in Clare but I don’t think the circumstances of those cases is similar to the three counties, it seems to be related to extended families and not industry, meat plants or other intensive industries,” he said on Clare FM.
