LANS for a Púca of Ennistymon sculpture have been scrapped. Local backlash emerged during the course of the week to Clare County Council’s plans for the sculpture which had an estimated price tag of €30,000 and formed part of the Destination Towns Programme. has been paused with a full review to be published in the near future. The Púca was one of 18 submissions received following advertisement of an artist’s brief earlier this year. It was selected by an adjudication panel comprising a community representative, an independent artist, the project manager for the Ennistymon scheme and Clare County Council’s Arts Office. It was inspired by the equine heritage and Irish folklore of Ennistymon. Speaking to The Clare Echo, Denis Vaughan of Save Ennistymon’s Heritage described the proposal as “totally inappropriate for Ennistymon.

Ennistymon has a tradition as a market town with a big emphasis on agriculture”. He added, “It is a monstrosity, it is a ghostly figure, we’ve had enough ghosts and don’t need anymore”. Vaughan criticised the level of initial consultation by the County Council. Community ideas must be listened to otherwise future plans for Ennistymon will fail, he predicted. “It is a typical example of design by community, I wonder to God what were the other options”.
