OG fouling has been described as “a massive problem” in Sixmilebridge with footpaths left in ‘a disgraceful’ state by canines in the area.

A social media campaign is to be initiated by Clare County Council’s environment section in light of the concerns raised on the high amount of faeces in Sixmilebridge.

Labelled by Cllr John Crowe (FG) as an “ongoing problem”, he requested a pilot scheme be implemented in Sixmilebridge “on measures to eliminate dog fouling on footpaths”. Senior executive engineer, Brendan Flynn in response detailed their plans to raise awareness on dog fouling and owner responsibility through social media campaigns.

“There are permanent metal signs and foam signs placed in different areas around Sixmilebridge and Shannon. This campaign will also be promoted through our Greener Clare programme and in print in The Clare Echo’s weekly green page,” Flynn stated. He outlined that random spot checks would be carried out with fines to be issued.

“This is a massive problem,” Cllr Crowe told the January meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. “The problem about the footpaths is that there are dogs being brought out, the dogs are leaving their business after them and it’s being left there, it is all over the paths. I met a lady out the other day, she had a pushchair and the four wheels were destroyed by dog fouling.”

ONE of Clare's greatest ever hurlers is to be buried on Friday (tomorrow).

Jim Cullinan known to the masses as Puddin is regarded as one of the most gifted hurlers to represent Clare, having lined out for the county seniors on 80 occasions. He was also a county selector at minor and senior.

Medals may have eluded him with the Banner but there were no such problems for the Pud when it came to the club. With Newmarket-on-Fergus, Pud won 10 Clare senior hurling championships, his impressive collection would have been even greater had it not been for a brief stint with Éire Óg.

Noted by many as "a small man but a real giant at the same time", the centre back was a pivotal member of an outfit that dominated the club scene in the 1960s and 1970s. He is also the holder of a Munster Club medal following The Blues' 1967 success.

His high regard within the game saw Puddin line out for Munster when the Railway Cup was a keenly contested affair. At inter-provincial level, he won four titles. Before the introduction of the All Stars, Jim won a Cú Chulainn Awards in 1968 when he was chosen as the best centre back in Ireland for that year.

Cullinan also gave plenty of time back to his club where he was involved with several

teams down through the years.

His most recent involvement coincided with the return of Newmarket as a force at senior level, he was a selector to ex Clare goalkeeper Seamus Durack in 2005 and 2006, the latter of which saw them reach their first championship final appearance in 25 years. Also in that decade, Puddin was entered into the Munster GAA Hall of Fame.

Two-time All-Star Johnny McMahon said: "He was the greatest Clare hurler of all time, he had such ability for a handy sized player, he could go up for a high ball with two six footers and he'd come down with it, he was absolutely brilliant."

Five arrested after late night manhunt STUART HOLLY

ARDA� have arrested five men in their late teens and early 20s, in relation to a burglary at a phone shop on O’Connell Street in Ennis on Monday.

Shortly before 2.30am, GardaĂ­ in Ennis received a report of a burglary that had just occurred in which a grey car was seen leaving the area. GardaĂ­ located the suspect car and carried out a managed pursuit. The car was abandoned on Ballyalla Grove and the occupants fled in different directions.

One man was arrested by GardaĂ­ and is currently detained at Ennis Garda Station.

A search of the car was carried out and GardaĂ­ recovered a large quantity of mobile phones that had been stolen.

GardaĂ­ put a cordon in place in the surrounding areas and a car was stopped on the Gort Road at around 5.30am. Three men who were in the car, were arrested and brought to Ennis and Shannon Garda Stations.

At around 8am, a fifth man was also arrested whilst walking on Drumcliffe Road and brought to Ennis Garda Station.

Dangerous situation at Clareabbey roundabout IMPROVED safety measures for the Clareabbey Roundabout have been submitted to TII for consideration, writes Paraic McMahon.

"Ongoing dangers for pedestrians and cyclists" at the roundabout prompted Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) to seek an update on plans to enhance safety.Three draft proposals are under review by the TII. All three include a proposed off road route around the west side with a three metre wide cyclepath/footpath, the reduction of the circulating carriageway to 7.5m, changes to the entry and exit geometry, accommodation of access to the Maxol Service Station, entry and exit ramps to connect the road to off road foot paths, vegetation removal, bollards, high friction surfacing plus all associated new warning signage and road markings.

Murphy commented, "I'm on about Clareabbey again as I've been for the last 12 years.

It is a crazy situation there".

Potential works would see "an incrased footfall of pedestrians and cyclists going to town and school," he believed. "It is very important that the TII take this seriously".

Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) seconded the motion.

THE Ennis Scouts will commence the building of a new hall in March, with a farewell being organised for the repurposing of the old, unused yet highly nostalgic building on the 23rd of February at 3pm.

Previous Scouts can return to inscribe their name or a cherished memory on the surface of the wall. That wall will then be used in the foundation of the new hall.

Chairperson Fiona Staunton has been a

member since 1980.

“It will be a nice way to say goodbye and to keep the stories alive,” she commented.

The new hall will cost over €450,000.

Sponsorship has taken the form of local concerts as well as funding from the Credit Union and Leader funding.

Individual support can be pledged through the ‘buy a brick’ initiative, which Fiona hopes will be strongly supported by current and former Scouts as well as those within the local community.

INISTER of State for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market & Data Protection Pat Breen met with management, staff and students of IAC in Shannon on Monday (February 4, 2020) as they prepare for the opening of Ireland’s newest hanger which will create up to 100 new jobs in Shannon.

International Aerospace Coatings (IAC) is the global leader in aircraft painting, interiors and graphics, and employs more than 100 staff already at its European headquarters based at Shannon Airport.

Minister Breen said, “The successes of the aviation industry in Shannon is something we as a county should be very proud of as we continue to be the focus of the world’s larg-

The new €18 million hanger developed by the Shannon Group and leased by IAC has been designed with sustainability and efficiency at the forefront, featuring LED lighting, maximum natural light, an air recirculation system and a heat recovery system for exhaust air.

It was the first hanger to be built in the country in 20 years, and boasts the widest door in Ireland at 90 metres, bigger than Croke Park.

POTENTIAL homeowners are experiencing 'extreme difficulties' in attempting to rent or purchase property.

Following up on a previous motion, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) reiterated his appeal for Clare County Council to run housing workshops in each Municipal District.

He stated, "The current situation for many people trying to purchase or rent property is extremely difficult to navigate and I believe the Council is well placed and need to be out there and putting forward

other measures to support the public as available social housing is limited and cannot possibly cope with the current demand in addressing accommodation needs".

A pilot workshop is being organised for Shannon, Director of Service, Anne Haugh confirmed in response. She detailed that this would take place in February and they intend to invite MABS, the Residential Tenancies Board, the Housing Agency, Banks, local auctioneers and local mortgage brokers.

At the workshop, the Council will outline to attendees information on the Rebuilding Ireland home loan, leasing options for landlords, RAS, Housing Assistance Payment plus new schemes

in the development of the Shannon MD. "Subject to the success of this pilot evening the event can be rolled out to other MDs," Haugh flagged.

Flynn who is the Chair of the Social Development SPC that has responsibility for housing insisted the motion was not aimed at Shannon solely, "I want something inclusive for the whole county.

“I don't agreed with your last comment that it should be subject to the success of the pilot".

He said that when this was debated last year, there was agreement that all four MDs would be included.

"There are more options than social housing for people to get a home from Clare County Council.

We've got to be positive, there is many a time a team has gone out and was not successful but they stuck at it," Cllr Flynn added.

The Shannon representative said the pilot can be tweaked before running it by other MDs. "We were never as hard pressed as to support people getting homes".

Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) agreed that the roll-out to all four Mds was approved in 2019.

"It is important that we have it," Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) commented at the January meeting of the local authority.

Clare experiences 'political earthquake'

LARE has elected its four TDs to the thirty second Dáil following a twenty one hour count at The Falls Hotel on Sunday and Monday.

Just one TD was returned in Clare. Deputy Joe Carey (FG) has retained his seat at Dáil Éireann having been first elected in 2007. Sitting TDs, Timmy Dooley (FF) and Junior Minister Pat Breen (FG) were the biggest casualties in the constituency.

Sinn Féin's national rise reached Co Clare with Violet-Anne Wynne (SF) becoming the first TD from the party since 1922 and the third ever female TD to come from Clare. She follows in the footsteps of Madeline Taylor Quinn (FG) and Síle de Valera (FF).

Wynne was the poll topper but was elected in second place after Michael McNamara (IND). In last year's local elections, the Offaly native polled 385 first preferences and astonishingly increased this by 8,602.

The Kilrush woman utilised twenty election posters during the course of the campaign and

was the last of the main party candidates to be nominated.

First time candidate, Cllr Cathal Crowe (FF) succeeded in entering national politics at the first attempt. The Cathaoirleach of the local authority was always expected to poll well, the surprise being that he is the only Fianna Fáil TD elected in Clare.

The Meelick native had a campaign team of 150 people.

Back in electoral politics for the first time since his defeat at the 2016 General Election, Michael McNamara (IND) was the first candidate elected in Clare.

The Scariff farmer proved to be extremely transfer friendly throughout the duration of the two day count, obtaining 4,873 in distributions alone. The barrister's campaign was rocked from the beginning with his aunt passing away, less than twenty four hours after entering the race.

"Never underestimate the Careys," was the message reiterated by Joe Carey (FG) who defied the odds once again despite collecting his lowest first preference vote in a General Election. Carey gained more on

his transfers than his party colleague, Pat Breen and ultimately it was transfers from the Junior Minister that put him ahead of Timmy Dooley in the race for the final seat. Ironically Breen was first elected to the Dáil in 2002 at the expense of Joe's father, Donal Carey.

2,607 extra people turned up to vote in Clare compared with the 2016 General Election. The inclusion of areas such as Carraig Midhe, Parteen, Ardnacrusha, Westbury and Shannon Banks were included in the constituency for the first time since 1989.

There were a total of 180 boxes sorted by the counting staff which was led by Returning Officer, Patrick Wallace.

Clare was the last constituency in Ireland to elect a TD to the thirty third Dáil. Dramatically all four were elected on the tenth count, shortly after 3:30pm on Monday.

The outcome of the election has been described by pundits as "a political earthquake" with others observing "a seismic shift" in the voting patters of the public from the Banner County.

HETHER it was watching The Wiggles with his one-year old daughter Eve or cleaning out his home office, South-East Clare's new TD Cathal Crowe (FF) spent much of the weekend busying himself in a bid to take his mind off election matters.

When he did arrive at The Falls Hotel, he was often spotted ambling with his youngest-born in his arms. For the moment of deliberation, son Sam replaced Eve in his arms as Papa Crowe was hoisted into the air by his supporters.

Minutes later the primary school teacher was talking to reporters about his new job, RIC commemorations, Shannon Air-

port, his passion for history and of course Sinn Féin's election success. On this, he was quick to remark that his deceased friend and former council colleague Mike Mckee (SF) would be an elected TD if still alive today.

However when it comes to the formation of a new Government, he insisted, "With regard to Sinn Féin, I think there's huge incompatibility with the parties. Nonetheless I think talks have to happen now between probably about five parties...the one thing I don't want is another election in a few months."

Crowe had up until this week served as Cathaoirleach of County Clare and his Mayoral duties thrust him into the spotlight just weeks ago when he refused to attend an RIC commemoration in Dublin, leading to its boycott and eventual postponement. He said that while the move certainly did his election bid no harm, it was no election stunt - rather a moral stand. He also admitted that

the controversy led him to considering his resignation as mayor.

"I decided [Sunday] morning to busy myself at home. My mind was in a bit of a tailspin and I decided to tidy my office and as I delved into a pile of paper, about 12 documents down was the letter from Charlie Flanagan dated early January and I read it a second time in the quiet of my office and I couldn't believe how wrongly they read a situation. I took a stand...but I didn't expect to ignite a national debate but my intention was never for political gain."

Having first become a councillor at the age of 21, the youngest in the country back in 2004, Cathal Crowe went on to win four council selections before his Dáil selection this week. He pondered, "So teaching and the council, sadly in a way both careers I'm now out of. That's the only way I've known and now life takes a different course. I'm hugely excited about it but moreover I've a

massive sense of gratitude.

"As I'm doing this interview I'm looking at the boxes of votes in front of me and as a councillor you do well in a few parishes but this has been a countywide achievement and I thank the people of Clare for putting me into Dáil Eireann and I will work damn hard on their behalf and I'm hugely grateful for family, supporters, councillors, campaigners who most of haven't taken a night off the last four or five weeks.

"They've put in a huge effort and it's thanks to that – I can't take all of this credit myself, I'm only leading out a team - it's thanks to that immense effort that I've been successful." He told The Clare Echo that Shannon Airport and fighting for rural development would be two key issues on his radar as he takes his seat in the Dáil.

Mr Crowe added that he was "absolutely sad and in disbelief " that Fianna Fáil failed to win a second seat.

8:49am - Details from the exit poll carried out by Ipsos MRBI for RTÉ, The Irish Times, TG4 and UCD: The first preference vote of both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil is suggested by this poll to stand at 44% – significantly lower than the 49% they polled in the 2016 General Election. In previous exit polls, support for Fianna Fáil has been

under-stated. However, on this occasion, the number of people interviewed has increased from about 3,000 to more than 5,300 to improve accuracy.

8:54am - Only 1% of those polled in the exit poll were influenced by Brexit. A key issue pushed by Fine Gael on the doorstep.

ORE tears were evident in the Carey camp than anywhere else on Monday by this writer's observations, as Joe's was unarguably the most dramatic story of the election.

Wynne rode in on a national Sinn Féin wave, Crowe was widely expected to poll strongly and Michael McNamara's campaign had the most shrewd observers tipping him to sneak in. But Clarecastle's Joe Carey (FG) was all but written off despite the experience of three successful elections in his locker. Emotion hung on his every comment to The Clare Echo in his first interview just moments after being hoisted on

course to be elected if tallies are correct!

"Well I said it here four years ago, I said 'never underestimate the Careys'. That thing just continues to happen. No-one gave me a chance but I gave myself a chance and my canvassers gave myself a chance. I knew I was doing very well at the doors even though we knew it was a challenge. I felt this campaign was the best campaign we ever ran and it's proven it today, I've managed to get a huge amount of transfers from the Green Party, from Pat Breen (FG), from Martin Conway (FG)."

Not for the first time Carey has become the occupier of the fourth and final seat in Clare and it was those transfers which were key for the former St Flannan's student who first became a TD aged 31. Having secured 11,345 votes, by the 10th and final count Joe profited from 5,661 transfers versus the 2,867 transfers which went the way of his

more high-profile Fianna Fáil rival Timmy Dooley. Carey did not arrive at the count centre until the 11th hour but the emotion of the journey was not lost on him as he paid tribute to the Carey clan.

"It's a huge achievement to win a seat in Dáil Eireann - I've managed to do that on four occasions. I've a wonderful family, a wonderful wife, two kids, and my dad has been a huge rock of strength for me as have my brother and my sister Dónal and Leonora. We have a small family, the Carey family, and we've all come together and worked so hard to get this achievement today. It was a tough day for Fine Gael [so] it's fantastic we've managed to retain our seat here. It was a tough, tough battle. I'm deeply proud of what we've achieved and I'm going to work as hard as I can for the people of Clare."

In fact, Joe admitted to us that it was a photograph of his family which gave him the belief that he would again be successful.

"I put a message on Facebook the night before the election, I just put up a picture of my wife, myself and my two kids and the type of reaction I got to it was just incredible. Messages of goodwill and likes, my phone is on fire the last number of days, people wishing me well. It's vibrating there in my pocket at the moment as well, it's just off the Richter scale. I have a huge amount of support across Clare and people have come out and supported me and I'm hugely proud of that."

To the amazement of many Joe is the only incumbent to retain his seat and Joe tells us "it says a bit about me". However he was quick to commiserate his party colleague Pat Breen who he insists is "someone I have looked up to as a Fine Gael politician and it is sad to see him losing his seat. There was only a marginal difference between Pat and I, something in the margin of 280 votes and I was lucky to be ahead of him and stay on and win that seat."

AVING been in the political wilderness for four years, the return of the Mac to Dáil Éireann in top spot has come as "a pleasant surprise".

Michael McNamara (IND) hoovered up on transfers during the two day election count at The Falls Hotel with his transfer tally of 4873 greater than the first preference vote of Rita McInerney (FF) and over 500 votes off that of Junior Minister Pat Breen (FG).

The barrister was unable to explain what it was that accounted for his record as a transfer friendly candidate, "luck maybe" being the response offered up.

"I'm tired and emotional, it's great when the work pays off but it doesn't always pay off," the Scariff farmer admitted as he was asked to stand in for photographs and carry out interviews in the aftermath of his success.

Such a success is bound to have made his late aunt very proud, the woman responsible for raring him since he was two weeks old and sadly died a day after he announced his candidacy last month.

Two other family losses were experienced during the campaign and The Clare Echo passes on our observation that his feat in being the first elected is sure to have made them proud, a comment that makes McNamara quite emotional.

On being the first home, Michael said, "It's a pleasant surprise, I worked hard from 2011 to 2016 and I didn't

"I remember a journalist at the time asked me when did I realise you were going to seat and I said literally when they said 'I now move to eliminate Michael McNamara', on this occasion I've been lucky.

"I feel very much for Timmy Dooley.

"When I did lose my seat, I sat with three colleagues but Timmy was the only one that came and sympathised with me and my wife.

"It has always stuck in my mind since".

Shannon Airport was regularly flagged as an issue during his canvass.

One retired councillor made the remark to The Clare Echo that Michael would be someone to stand up for Shannon in the Dáil.

"The TD has committed to fighting the cause in Leinster House.

He said, "Shannon Airport you can see it is in decline, something is going to have to be done.

"You can't keep driving all economic development into one part of the country to the detriment of the whole country.

"This third runway in Dublin was built in the teeth of opposition from local residents when there was already two runways in Dubin.

Shane Ross seemed to think that if it wasn't in Dublin there couldn't be business brought to it.

"They are now talking about a third terminal in Dublin specifically for intercontinental transit passengers.

"I know the Government could direct it to Shannon and I hope they will see fit to do so and introduce measures to help Shannon Airport".

WYNNE RAISES THE TRI-COLOUR

AMERAS, crews and onlookers surrounded Violet Anne Wynne as Count 10 was announced and she was the second candidate to reach the quota – it was a situation that wasn't predicted by many.

Despite her low profile, Violet steamrolled her way to more than 15 per cent of the 1st preference vote.

At the count centre, the Sinn Féin candidate's team were located beside The Clare Echo media station and their contained excitement was palpable – some members bouncing their thoughts off The Clare Echo team with soon-to-be councillor Donna McGettigan kindly offering to include us in the Shinners' coffee run.

But all eyes were on Violet on Sunday night and all day Monday – the Kilrush-based mum of five being pulled left and right for media questioning, pats on the back, family duties and conversations.

However when the moment of celebration arrived, she cut a calm figure and opted not to be hoisted aloft like her colleagues, instead holding onto one of her children as two tri-colours were instead raised in the air.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, she alluded that despite finding it all a bit "overwhelming", her family remained a calming influence over the two-day count.

"That has kept me grounded, I walked into this room yesterday and there were cameras all in my face and people wanting to talk to me because I'd left it so late to come into the count room... so having my kids there was a constant reminder as to why I got into politics in the first place and why I'm doing all of this, because it can be quite strange.

"It's a different world to what I am usually living."

Furthering this point, Violet said that personal hardships gave her the resolve to continue her political career following a poor showing in last year's local elections.

"I have been pushed by anger towards my own circumstances, just feeling hardship every day that I decided to put myself forward and I wasn't going to change my mind on that most definitely but I had no idea I was going to actually be the candidate in this election and I had no idea that it was going to transpire to this kind of result."

In the elation of her selection, Violet Anne was quick to remember some low days which troubled her as recently as the election campaign.

"We actually had car trouble, my car broke down for a week and a half of the very short campaign that we had which was only three weeks so that did put everything under pres-

sure.

"I was looking at prospects of having to thumb for a lift to get events but in fact my team stepped up to the mark. They're a great group of people and came out and got me whenever I needed to attend debates.

"In fact if anything, it brought us all closer together as a team which was great but that was a specific moment when I was left wondering, what am I going to do here. It was a very low point."

Looking ahead at her own future in Dáil Eireann with a party that's entering new territory, Violet was defiant about Sinn Féin's prospects of entering the spotlight.

"I think we'll deal with it the way we handle most obstacles, that's with confidence but particularly with comradery.

"We boost each other up and we keep each other going because when you are creating change and you are there for the people, you do face many obstacles."

TIMMY Dooley (FF) is to take time out before deciding what his future holds following his surprise defeat in the election.

The Mountshannon native was agonisingly edged out by Joe Carey (FG) in the final count at The Falls Hotel on Monday afternoon. Vote management has been the key critique thrown at Fianna Fáil within the county in 2011 and 2016 as Dooley was the only candidate returned, once again they elected only one member of the ticket but this time it was Cathal Crowe.

"My first count was back considerably because we had taken a decision to try and really go after two seats, being the sitting TD and having had the votes previously there was an incumbency on me to try and manage things a bit better, maybe I managed it too well to my own disadvantage but those are the risks you take in political life," Timmy reflected.

Transfers were not plentiful for Dooley as he only received 2867 during the duration of the count, the second lowest he has obtained in any of the four General Elections he has contested, the lowest being 843 when he was elected on the fourth count in 2007.

WARM embraces were shared between Cllr Róisín Garvey and various members of her campaign team after she was finally eliminated at a quarter past one on Monday in sixth place.

Having previously declared herself as the strongest rural Green candidate, it did transpire that way as she reached 7,339 votes (5,624 1st pref). However it wouldn't be enough and interactions between this writer and her supporters throughout the weekend indicated that had Violet Anne Wynne's transfers come into play (always an unlikely permutation), the Inagh woman would have had a true shot at a place in Dáil Eireann.

Despite knowing her fate well in advance, Garvey's family and friends were sure to comfort her following the announcement from Returning Officer Pat Wallace of her elimination. Ms Garvey remarked on the notable support she received from her campaign team - even the ones she hadn't met, yet alone hugged.

"I think we did really well today, we gave people a different choice that was based on positivity and hope and trying to do things right by the people on a housing level, on a health level. I think maybe the Green Party's message is obviously a climate change message, but for me it was a lot more than that."

RETIRING before the General Election 'was never an option', defeated Junior Minister Pat Breen (FG) has revealed.

Ironically the figure 9.1 percent will be forever associated with the political career of Pat Breen marking his entry and exit from Dáil Éireann. First elected in 2002 having polled 4,541 votes, the Ballynacally man collected 5,406 first preferences this year, both figures which equate at 9.1 percent of the valid poll.

"You don't stand for an election to lose, you stand for an election to win but in public life the risks are there."

For him, Pat maintained it was not his performance as Minister of State that prompted his loss.

"I think we were judged at the climate at the time time not on my performance, I performed really well as a Minister and as a TD and delivered to the county but the tide was starting to go out on us, maybe party fatigue had set in, we were up against the Sinn Féin wind which blew us off course and blew me off course because Violet-Anne did very well in West Clare where I normally get a good vote and where I have my clinics".

"SERIOUS issues" are prevalent in Clare but also exciting "opportunities", defeated Rita McInerney (FF) acknowledged following her sixth count elimination on Monday.

Running in a General Election for the first time, Rita had previously lost out in a bid to win a seat on Clare County Council in 2009 when put forward as an Independent candidate.

Compared with the 2016 General Election, McInerney polled 1,497 more first preference votes than Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) who was the party's first female candidate since ex TD Síle de Valera in 2002.

Having an office in Kilrush for the past eight months stood to Rita who polled strongest in Bansha, Carrigaholt, Cooraclare, Creagh, Kilkee, Kilmihil, Knockerra and her native Doonbeg.

Voters had previously indicated to The Clare Echo that the constituency office had influenced their decision to vote for the shopowner.

Rita arrived at the count centre on Sunday evening during the wait for the first count along with family, who had been right beside throughout the entire campaign. She didn't return to The Falls Hotel on Monday but paid tribute to all those who voted for her.

"A SEISMIC shift in the way people think about politics" was evident according to Martin Conway (FG) as he reflected on the results of the weekend's outcome in Clare.

Just like his first attempt to winning a seat on Clare County Council in 1999, Conway also lost when contesting a General Election for the first time. He had anticipated getting more than 2,285 first preference votes. "Clearly I was seen as part of the establishment even though I never stood in a General Election before". The Ennistymon man cited being on a ticket with two strong Fine Gael candidates, coming from "a depopulated part of the county" and the close proximity of Cllr Roisin Garvey (GP) as factors that "worked their way against me".

Conway ackowledged how people's views had altered. "Trying to explain politics at the moment, it really is inexplicable, eight months ago Violet-Anne Wynne had less than 400 votes in the local election and didn't take a seat, today she is topping the poll, there has been a seismic shift in the way people think about politics, Clare is always reflective of the national picture, we are not unique so when there was a wave to Sinn Féin it wasn't going to be unique."

HAVING come up short in bids to be elected at local and national level in the past nine months, Joseph Woulfe (IND) outlined that he has another election on the horizon over the coming weeks.

Elected as Chairperson of the Beef Plan Movement last month, Woulfe temporarily stepped aside to focus on canvassing with Pat Nagle taking on the role as interim Chairperson. "I've to be re-elected again, it will be my fourth election in less than a year," the Quilty farmer and barber explained to The Clare Echo.

He only added 184 votes to his first preference in the General Election compared with his first preference return in last May's local election. "I only canvassed about ten to fifteen churches, two shopping centres and you were with me for one of them, I went to the Mart three or four times, that was it. It took 24 days, getting people together, people like to back someone that has been there before".

"I was aiming in and around the 3000 mark, the high 2000 to 3000 mark was where my head was at but that didn't pan out, a lot of people in the room didn't get what they expected they would either. It's an election, something has happened, no more than the last election when Harty got in".

CLARE'S General Election outcome of not electing two TDs from either Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael for the first time has been hailed as "visionary" by Theresa O'Donohoe (PBP).

Accounting for 2% of the first preference vote, the Lisdoonvarna woman was thrilled with the result.

"I'm delighted, absolutely delighted, two weeks and no posters, my team were brilliant, they worked full time, one of them was in school, they were absolutely dedicated to the cause and did a lot of footwork. To get that many votes first time out is great, we were hoping for a thousand votes and to get 1196 is brilliant".

She was adamant the message delivered across the county was clear.

"It proves that there is a need for change, it's a different type of change than what we're used to, it's pretty visionary.

"Within a couple of weeks we will have a People Before Profit meeting and see who's interested, we've had a few new members since I started this, that is where we're going with it".

SINN Féin will not be "the party of change", one of Clare's unsuccessful General Election candidates has declared.

A "very disappointed" Michael Leahy (IFP) polled 704 first preference votes, a tally he admitted was "well below my target" and saw him eliminated on the third count. "I think it shows the importance of the national profile of the party, Sinn Féin ran what is regarded by most people a candidate that wasn't well known but nevertheless she topped the poll and took a seat".

"During the canvass a lot of people said to me I was raising important issues that others weren't, I thought we might be able to cash in on the mood for change, I don't feel that Sinn Féin are the party of change, I think they will be more of the same policies of what we've had over the last ten years so, more so only worse. The people have made their choice and that's the end of it," the Corofin resident stated.

Leahy believed it was an attitude of wanting "something different" that encouraged people to vote for Sinn Féin but he accused the electorate of not being fully informed when it came to making a decision, "people are not tuned into the niceties of policies". The mentality of looking for an unconventional option gave the architect hope that the party may benefit.

TD I would like to sincerely thank all those who voted for me last weekend. It is an honour and a privilege to have been elected to serve County Clare.

A special thanks to my friends and family and all those who took the time to canvass and put up posters, in the best and worst of weather. I will represent you all to the best of my abilities.

DAVID Barrett (IND) has admitted his first entry into politics was "disappointing".

Eliminated on the second count, the Australian born engineer was unsure if his first foray into politics had whet his appetite for public office. "I'm licking the wounds.

When I analysed it I didn't do too badly, I came in very late, I was nominated on the last day so I only had a couple of weeks to get my act together and I didn't have the artwork for any of my flyers done right. I was on the backfoot from the beginning, I spent less than €500 on advertising, when you bear that in mind I had a little bit of reach, if I had a longer timeframe and more money, I might have done better".

He also conceded that his low profile also made the task of getting elected more difficult. Last year, Barrett announced plans to establish The Moderate Party and is open to someone more well-known taking charge of party. "At the moment I haven't the money to throw at it, for the moment that is probably it for now, I would never say never. The way the numbers are forming in this it will be different for them to make a Government, you never know we might be back at this same point in three months time".

TRUDY Leydon (IND) conducted her campaign without the aid of election paraphernalia and admitted to The Clare Echo that it was to her detriment.

Speaking on Sunday night after being eliminated with 222 votes (218 1st pref) on the second count, Trudy was in high spirits as she assessed her GE2020 performance.

"I think it was [a disadvantage] because people need to see you. Even people in my own neighbourhood when I canvassed said 'I didn't realise until yesterday when I saw in the paper that you were running'.

But I knew I wasn't going to get a seat so I had the creativity to go and just run my own ideal campaign.

Trudy said she was prepared for the campaign slog of having worked as election agent for Mary Howard (FG) in 2016. "But I did find I got fatigue, I had a pain in my jaws after talking to people for hours at the doors and I was sleeping in because of it, it was crazy. But there was no stress all the way through."

After remarking on her surprise that Michael Leydon was due to pick up a good chunk of her transfers despite "being on the opposite end of the spectrum to me" she moved to speculate on her future in politics.

"Let's just say if there's another election in a few months, I won't be running in it."

There were surprises aplenty in the election race, the first count elimination of Conor O’Brien (Renua) was not one of them.

Across the country, Renua ran in eleven constituencies and failed to win any seats, just like the 2016 General Election when it had twenty six candidates.

However the crucial difference this time round being that the party did not win two percent of first preference votes across the country and subsequently is no longer eligible for state funding.

O’Brien told The Clare Echo that he was annoyed Renua failed to promote his campaign sufficiently in the run up to polling day.

The Lahinch resident’s low profile and absence from the Clare PPN Hustings and Clare FM debates further serving to enhance his anonymity.

He was absent from the Count Centre on Sunday and Monday.

In Clonlara, tallies attributed to Conor were greater than Senator Martin Conway (FG) and Joseph Woulfe (IND).

The Kilrush native obtained his best vote in Shannon, Kilrush, Sixmilebridge, Clonmoney, Shannon Banks.

I will work tirelessly on your behalf to bring about the changes needed to make Clare a better and equal County for us all. This is the beginning of a new political era and you have lead the way to a brighter future for our Country. I suspected there was a surge in Sinn Féin support, I never thought at all that an unknown candidate could sweep to the top of the poll as Violet-Anne Wynne did.

"I'm delighted Michael McNamara is returning to the Dáil, his election was a mighty achievement, he started with a huge disadvantage with family bereavements to cope with at the beginning of the campaign, at the same time he had the character and the determination to get down to work.

"Violet-Anne Wynne's success was almost entirely to do with brand Sinn Féin, there was a tsunami of support for the party across the country and she was part of that.

Sinn Fein's rise in Clare has come as a surprise as their candidate was not well known and had a poor result in last years local elections.

"Transfer of votes were fascinating at the count as we were seeing various lines of transfer from a woman, geographical, party and protest vote. This made it really difficult to predict with each count who the winners would be.

"Michael McNamara definitely gained massively in rural areas from the farming vote and took from Breen and Dooley. Ironically Fianna Fáil had failed to bring in a second TD in the past with Dooley and this time around he struggled to garner enough transfers to get elected.

"This was the election of "change", but change is not always positive and change in the form of Sinn Féin is a move towards socialism, high taxes, stagnation of the economy. Sadly when this adventure into socialist governance fails, it is the most vulnerable of society that will pay.

"My goodness, for a candidate that was unknown throughout the county, the votes she got everywhere really surprised people, they couldn't understand it.

The wave was with Sinn Féin like it was with the Greens in the Council election.

Young people want change, they did change it. Having said that I would like to commiserate with Pat Breen and Timmy Dooley on losing their seat. I stood outside the count centre on a few different occasions fighting for the last seat, it is very traumatic on them and their families, I would like to commiserate with Pat and Timmy".

Clare retains its bellwether status

A

S THE dust settles on what has been the most unprecedented election in the history of the country, one thing is for certain; Clare’s position as a bellwether constituency is secured once more.

The Banner has again proven a great yard stick for the overall national result.

As per the rest of the country, the Sinn Féin surge was present in Clare with the party shattering even their own wildest expectations.

Speaking to senior SF politicians in Dublin’s RDS on Sunday morning, they could not believe the news from Clare when I told them their candidate was topping the poll on tallies from the Banner.

As one put it to me at that point, “If we’re going well in Clare, we could be well into the high 30 seat count when it’s all over”.

It turns out he was correct in his estimation with the party finishing on 37 seats in the 33rd Dáil.

Such was the swell of support nationally that individual SF candidates didn’t even have to campaign.

In Kildare South, their candidate headed off for a holiday in the Canaries instead of knocking on door.

She only just returned in time for the count and to take her seat.

As in other constituencies, the ability of Sinn Féin’s Violet Anne Wynne to take votes from all corners of the county, including areas that never voted SF in number previously, proved the winning of a seat.

Fine Gael appeared to badly misjudge just how angry the people were with their mishandling of the country, especially on the issues of health and housing.

The party can count itself lucky to come back with any seat in Clare at all after all their candidates failed to make it into the top four spots on the first count.

Ultimately, transfers saved them a seat in the guise of Joe

Carey, beating out his running mate and Clare’s highest-ranking politician in Minister of State, Pat Breen.

With just 35 seats, the party has already resigned itself to a spell on the opposition benches.

Questions are also already being asked of the leadership of Leo Varadkar.

Clare also proved a microcosm for the Fianna Fáil party fortunes across Ireland.

On early tallies and even the first count proper, the prediction of two Fianna Fáil seats in Clare looked an accurate one with both Cathal Crowe and Timmy Dooley placed in the top four with a sizeable vote from Rita McInerney behind them, looking to keep both men well placed.

However, from that point on, transfers were in short supply, for Timmy Dooley especially.

The party, once all dominant in Clare, will also be very disappointed in the fact that only half of McInerney’s transfers came to her running mates with some 2,300 votes going elsewhere.

When all was said and done, roughly a third of that vote leakage would have been enough to see Dooley take the 4th seat ahead of Joe Carey.

Alas, for Dooley, it wasn’t to be.

Fine Gael only enjoyed a marginally better internal transfer rate, approaching 60%, and seemed to do better than FF from other parties, notably from Róisín Garvey of the Greens.

On her elimination, the gap between Dooley and Carey went from just 250 votes to 715.

Nationally, the lack of vote transfers killed FF’s hopes.

The party’s self-proclaimed responsibility in facilitating the Confidence and Supply agreement came back to haunt them.

They got none of the credit for things that went well like Brexit, but instead shared in the blame for everything that went wrong over the past 4 years.

They had polled “in the frame” for 48 seats on first counts around the country, but

by the time the counting had all ended, they came back with just 38.

This was undoubtedly a disastrous result for the party that had been on course to return to Government with Michéal Martin as Taoiseach.

Now, it looks as if the party face a tough decision.

Do they allow an SF led, left wing minority government be formed and go to the opposition benches for a third straight term?

Do they seek to form a minority coalition government of their own with C&S from FG? Do they coalesce with SF and others to implement the change agenda they campaigned for?

Or, are we heading for a second election in 2020?

A left-wing minority Government is possible.

SF surplus votes across Ireland favoured Solidarity-People Before Profit more than any other grouping with the group returning five TDs. Coupled with the Greens and Social Democrats, they would have 60 seats.

This is more than the outgoing Fine Gael/Independent minority government enjoyed before even considering the support it would receive from left wing independents.

Nevertheless, Fianna Fáil will not be signing up to any new Confidence and Supply agreements and Fine Gael have flatly rejected the idea of giving any tacit support to allowing such a government form.

At this juncture, it seems as if the only viable option for stable government is Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin with the support of some Independents or else the Green Party.

It would be a tough arrangement to get a FF Ard Fheis to approve.

Until then, it’s up to the 160 new TD’s elected to agree on what direction the county will take.

If they can’t, then get ready to see posters back up on poles and doors being knocked upon once more.

Which direction it takes won’t be clear for a long time yet.

BEE IN YOUR BONNET DeValera Library recently welcomed the children, teachers and parents of senior infant classes in Scoil Chríost Rí, Cloughleigh, Ennis to a nature themed show and tell session with Clare beekeeper, Frank Considine.

Frank chatted to the children and their parents during a child friendly presentation about how bees make honey and how flowers are pollinated.

His real life props included a hive, beeswax and a bee suit that the lucky children tried on and of course there was honey to taste at the fun educational event.

Frank was glad of the opportunity to inspire a love of insects, particularly bees in the children and get them excited about the abundance of nature all around them.

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE In 2001, an outbreak of foot and mouth disease shook the United Kingdom, with the shockwaves being felt right through to County Clare. Shannon was the first cause for concern in the Banner county, with the importation of all animals ceased in March, in an attempt to curb the potential epidemic. The racehorse industry became increasingly disgruntled, being directly affected due to the disturbance to breeding season and an air of uncertainty began to wade over Cheltenham and the Grand National. The Department of Agriculture swiftly intervened in the ebb and flow of agribusiness following the outbreak, with the imminent closure to the Clare marts effective immediately. Anyone travelling to Cardiff from Shannon for Ireland’s rugby game against Wales had to come to terms with the IRFU’s decision to postpone the match indefinitely. The U.K and Ireland were in disarray. An announcement was played on loop at Shannon Airport, stressing precautionary measures to any travellers that had visited farms in the UK or were in possession of any meat or dairy products. Spot checks for the possession of these products were conducted regularly at the airport.

The fallout of the disease had a huge impact on farming and tourism in Clare, causing the loss of millions of pounds to the economy. Over £100,000 per week was being lost due to the closure of the marts in Clare, a county which relies heavily on farming. In addition, thousands of tourists were turned away from local hot spots in County Clare such as the Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty Castle, to help combat the disease. For three months, the Irish public remained in limbo, closely watching developments in the U.K. A total of 6 million cows and sheep were killed in containment efforts. In October 2001, foot and mouth disease had been brought fully under control.

In addition to the financial and volunteering bursary, the partnership will culminate with a community fun day, which will include the provision of free heart health checks by Croi, at which the fruits of the facelifts will be revealed for the entire community to enjoy.

OPEN ARMS IN CO CLARE In 2001, the village of Meelick opened their arms to the arrival asylum seekers who were placed at Knockalisheen. Permanent structures were built as opposed to mobile homes which were outlined in the original blueprints. Media attention followed the traditional and ever-present perception of asylum seekers and their Irish community members, whereby it was believed that the residents in the area were unhappy with the decision to house up to 400 newcomers. One angry resident refuted these claims, gently reminding the media about the hospitality shown by locals in 1956, whereby Hungarian refugees were accommodated and welcomed whole heartedly. At the time, locals lit bonfires in a calculated act of hospitality.

The new centre was built with the intention to house family groups. The construction of a new facility at Knockalisheen added to a tally of seventy similar centres throughout the country at the time. Similarly, Scariff received thirty-nine asylum seekers from Eastern Europe in the same year and plans were put in place to welcome the newcomers and allow them to assimilate into the already 763 strong community. These thirty-nine individuals comprised of mainly family units were being accommodated at the Scariff Court Hotel. English classes were set up to allow the younger asylum seekers to integrate, with four children joining the local primary school. At the time, adult asylum seekers received £15 per week and children, exactly half that figure. County Clare has always been a stronghold for asylum seekers, offering a helping hand to those in need and continues to do so, to this very day.

CLARE WOMAN LIVES TO 104 Bridget K. Fahey, originally from Feakle in East Clare, died at the miraculous age of 104, in the year 2001. She was living in South Hill, Virginia, USA at the time. Born in 1897, Bridget lived in Ireland until 1977, when her daughter Mary brought her to the United States to live with her and her family. She passed on January 29th, 2001, having lived in three different centuries.

ASILY, the most popular time of year to get married is the summer with the spring being not quite as popular. The spring is often cheaper because of this, while the summer is the most expensive. EMBERSHIP of the Burren Ecotourism Network has grown dramatically for 2020 due to a strong momentum built up by its management in recent years.

Now representing almost 70 businesses in the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark, the network is comprised of a substantial number of well-established businesses that collectively employ over 1,000 people in the area.

The last board meeting of the Burren Ecotourism Network saw George Quinn (inset) of Hylands Burren Hotel in Ballyvaughan elected as chairperson, following the very successful tenure of Brid Fahy.

George Quinn is a Ballyvaughan native with extensive International business experience and operates a wide range of tourism related businesses in Ballyvaughan, ranging

from retail shops, self-catering accommodation and hospitality.

“As Climate Change and Sustainability continue to be international hot topics, County Clare has been to the forefront of innovation and leadership in the area of sustainable tourism.

TOYOTA WINS ON EMISSIONS

TOYOTA IS THE BEST OF IRELAND’S TOP-TEN BRANDS WHEN IT COMES TO LOW EMISSIONS

A

CCORDING to data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), Toyota is the clear winner when it comes to reducing the CO2 output from the top 10 car brands. Toyota’s CO2 output is the lowest, achieving 17 per cent lower emissions than the top nine other car brands in Ireland. (see table below and attached) According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the C02 output from transport in Ireland has increased in five of the last six years, with 2018 the last reported year increasing by 1.7 per cent. With consumers looking for real alternatives to their traditional petrol or diesel car, they have clearly made self-charging hybrids their preferred choice. Hybrids have become the fastest growing powertrain, up 104 per cent in 2020. So, what impact will this have on Ireland’s CO2 output?

SIMI’s figures show that the average CO2 output from all new Toyota hybrids sold in 2019 was 86.84g v’s an average of 112g of the

remaining top 10 competitors. This 17 per cent difference is significant and highlights the role self-charging hybrids play in reducing CO2. This is already exceeding the EU target of 95g set for all car manufactures by 2021. In fact Toyota is the only top 10 car brand in Ireland to do so and 2 years ahead of target.

Therefore, it is clear that hybrids play a significant role in reducing Ireland’s CO2 output. We know that hybrid supply is more readily available than pure electric cars, as 50 Hybrid batteries can be produced for every 1 battery electric vehicle. Today, self-charging hybrids make up 15 per cent of total Irish market sales in 2020 and will save 64,000 of C02 over their lifetime.

Commenting on the news, Steve Tormey, CEO of Toyota Ireland said, Toyota is committed to playing its part and leading Ireland towards zero emissions motoring as we have been doing for the past 22 years with selfcharging Hybrid electric vehicles. Given the myriad of challenges facing full electrifica-

tion, from the global shortage of lithium for batteries through to the inherent challenges associated with creating a charging infrastructure, it is our view that there is no silver bullet to reducing CO2 output. In fact we believe self-charging Hybrids offer the best volume solution today to reducing Ireland’s CO2 output. In addition to electric vehicle growth, policy makers should be encouraging the growth of Hybrids, as we firmly believe a Hybrid mix of 25 per cent can be achieved in 2021, which would reduce Ireland’s CO2 by 166,000 tonnes in their lifetime.

It is not just Toyota that are extolling the virtues of self-charging hybrid as a way to positively tackle of carbon footprint. According to the highly-respected international emissions auditing company, Emissions Analytics, the best way to meet our climate goals is to encourage the take-up of selfcharging hybrids.

S HE made his way from the playing pitch to the dressing room, the disappointment was clear on the face of Clare manager Colm Collins “Forget about the result, the performance was very poor and to concede a goal like that at the end was particularly disappointing”, the Cratloe clubman said.

Clare always knew that they faced a big test at the Connacht venue, particularly as Roscommon had failed to pick up a victory in either of their two opening games but they had travelled to Hyde Park in an upbeat mood following an impressive performance and win over Kildare seven days earlier.

N A CASE of Jekyll and Hyde, once again we were unable to back up a good performance with another.

I don’t understand how we can go from something very positive against Kildare to what we witnessed last weekend. And it’s not just the result I’m referring to, it’s our style of play that’s most concerning.

Now, I heard Colm Collins speaking on the radio after the game and you could hear the disappointment in his voice in relation to our performance, especially the second half. I commend the way we played against Kildare; the enthusiasm with which we pushed up and supported our forwards,

making it so much easier to create chances.

Last Sunday we had an extra man for most of the secondnd half with a gale force breeze behind us and yet, we still played with an extra man in defence. We allowed short kick outs from the Roscommon keeper and let them dictate their own game from there. In fact, their keeper played as a outfield player which actually gave them the extra man in their half of the field.

We didn’t score in the first half which, with the wind and conditions, I can accept. Lots of teams over the weekend had only one or two points after 35 mins of play but they came out in attack mode for the second half with Storm Ciara at their backs - but we didn’t. To score four points in total - three from frees and one with the assistance of a fist after it dropped in short - is worrying. I know we struggle to score freely but whatever chance you have, the first criteria you need to meet is putting the ball in the opposition half.

Because to state the obvious, you can’t score from inside your own half and unfortunately that’s where we spent most of our day on Sunday when we had the ball.

We sat back and let the Rossies play the ball around until they got numbers up, found the space and ran at us - then we struggled with their power and strength when that happened. I just can’t understand why, when the clock was ticking down, we didn’t push right up for their kick-outs and pressurise them with intensity; do our defending in their half or at least try a few long balls deep into their defence to our full forward line.

When you have a breeze, I always feel that’s the time to play a three-man full forward line with loads of running.

At least then a forward receiving the ball is close to goal to shoot or if fouled, it’s an easy free to point. We really do need to have a plan B for days like last Sunday. With the extra man, strong breeze and Roscommon missing a few key players it was a great opportunity to take points home.

But it was an opportunity missed, unfortunately.

It’s Laois at home next weekend and that is now a massive game for us. All teams across the board in all divisions seem to be winning their home games - hopefully that trend continues.

FTER another fruitless day long excursion up North, this time playing outside the EU for the very first time, one would have expected Clare’s mood to be quite downbeat on Saturday evening, especially after being pummelled by the incessant wind and rain in Tyrone GAA’s Centre of Excellence in Garvaghey.

Instead however, the post-match atmosphere was refreshingly sanguine, having competed increasingly well against senior opposition on successive away weekends, according to selector Enda O’Halloran. “I suppose people at home are expecting us to get wins but we’re building towards the championship, that’s our main goal this year. And we’ve asked the girls to improve every day they go out so it’s great that that is happening in the main and that’s all we can ask for really.

“Don’t get me wrong, it was tough going today, starting with the long trip up. Luckily enough, it was an all-weather field so conditions underfoot weren’t too bad but the wind and the rain didn’t help. And at the end of the day, it’s disappointing that we didn’t get a result but the performance we can take a lot of positives out of it.

“People do look at results first and foremost but the bottom line is that we’re happy, the management are happy with the way the girls are going. And I can only say that the girls are working awful, awful hard and that there hasn’t been any win on the board yet is not for the want of trying.

It’s not easy coming up to places like this

trying to get a result but they left everything out on the field today and we can’t ask for anymore than that.”

They certainly couldn’t and with a bit more ruthlessness in front of goal, Clare could have come away with a valuable scalp, only to be sucker-punched at the death with a late brace of Tyrone goals.

“The way it panned out, we seemed to have to work harder for our own scores and they [Tyrone] did get a couple of fortuitous goals which in these weather conditions happens as we got one with Grainne [Nolan]’s shot that ended up in the net as well. But look, we created more chances today than we did against Monaghan and Armagh so that’s another positive for us.”

Having faced three senior sides in as many weeks, O’Halloran and Co. do have a two week break to get themselves ready for the prospect of hosting Meath, a fellow intermediate side that will provide a far more accurate barometer of where Clare currently lie despite being currently understrength.

“We have absentees through injury, work commitments but you can look at it the other way too in that we’re getting the chance to look at other girls as well. That has to happen as they’re training equally as hard as the starting 15 so it has given us a great chance to look at everyone and it will be the same for two weeks’ time against Meath.

“It will be another tough challenge as Meath have been in the All-Ireland Intermediate Final for the past two years. So they’re a good outfit so we’ll have to be as good if not better again to get something out of that.”

INNING a Harty Cup has been the dream for Conner Hegarty and his teammates since they walked through the doors of St Flannan’s College for the first time.

Hegarty is a well known hurling name in Kilnamona but Conner is no relation to two time All-Ireland winner Fergal who is now manager of the Inagh/Kilnamona senior hurling team. Dean McInerney and Niall Glynn, younger brother of ex-Clare senior hurling panellists Eamon and Brian plus Christina an All-Ireland camogie winner with St Flannan’s, form the club contingent on the panel.

Alongside Clarecastle’s Cian Galvin, Conner is joint captain of the side that go in search of their first Harty title since 2005. The role doesn’t have extra responsibilities “just more talking in the dressing room. On the pitch, everyone is talking�.

He tends not to focus too much on the captaincy. “Go out and play hurling, that’s what I love doing�. This love of the game sees him pucking everyday whether it be at home or at school, “everyone does it�. “I’d say Cian Galvin, he is the main leader of this team, he is unbelievable on the pitch but in the dressing room too, he would be the loudest�. Away from the dressing room, Killian O’Connor is the one panellist most difficult to shut up according to Hegarty, “I might get in a bit of trouble about that�.

Five years ago as they were adjusting to life in secondary school, Conner reflected that the Harty Cup was always part of their discussion. “For most of us it’s been our dream since we came in to the school in First Year, it’s all we’ve been talking about, Harty Cup, Harty Cup and it’s great to be in the final now. We were told bring in our hurley everyday and it was basically an extension of our arm, it’s always been about the Harty Cup, not really school work�.

Brendan Bugler issued the instruction about bringing the hurley, not about neglecting school work. His input has been very positive in helping to mould promising youngsters like Hego. “Bugler started us off, O’Grady was the U15 trainer when we came into first year, Bugler has been with us the whole way up. We’ve Tony Kelly and Jack Browne as our water boys so there is great experience there, they give great advice. They’ve lined out in All-Ireland finals and know what

LAYED in the midst of a status yellow weather warning, the strong wind made conditions difficult for both sides on Saturday afternoon at the County Grounds.

With the elements in their favour for the opening half, Clare should have been further ahead. This and their second half slump were the main reasons why victory was not to be theirs on this occasion.

Jamie Stack came close to breaking the deadlock on eight minutes but Galway netminder David Garvalik pushed his free over the crossbar. The resulting corner from Stack put Clare in front as centre half Ian Cassidy headed the ball into his own net on eight minutes.

Another Stack shot was pushed out for a corner by Garvalik later in the half with other scoring chances not capitalised on by the hosts. With thirty eight minutes on the clock, Scott Kirkland put Lee Clohessy through on goal but the Avenue Utd winger failed to take the opportunity leaving Clare just 1-0 ahead at half-time.

Galway settled into proceedings on the restart and were back on level terms on fifty eight minutes. Lewis Wevam lobbed the ball over Kyle O’Callaghan leaving Kody McCann with little to do but tap to ball into the back of the net.

It was a wake-up call for Clare who went back ahead on their next attack. Callum Hussey managed to win a corner on the right wing which was swung in by Stack, Jack Ryan got a shot in and it rebounded to Storm Devanney who headed home.

CLARE Lifesavers look towards the Clare McGrath and Pamela McGrath, Irish National Surf Lifesaving Stillwater National team coach Brendan McGrath, Championships this weekend following and Patrick O’Grady who was referee a hugely successful European Champi- for the Masters beach comp and coach onships in Riccone Italy last September. for the National teams also.

Masters Results Athletes from Clare are hoping to continue their success at the Nationals in UL after leading the charge in Italy with outstanding results representing Ireland at Masters, Senior and Junior level while Clare also had great success at club championship level. This Clare crew hailed from Clarecastle, Corofin, Ennis, Ennistymon, Lahinch and Maurices Mills.

They were involved in the European titles won by Irish l SUCCESSFUL OUTING: competitors at this Champi- Bernard Cahill and Turlough Barrett onships which is testament to the skill level of these athletes and the intense training undertaken by Norma Cahill European Champion in Board race, Swim andOceanwoman them.

As well as competitors in Italy, the race Sinead Mortell European Champion county also provided referees for both the pool and beach competitions in in Beach flags race, Silver Board race

Golf: Storm Ciara disrupts

MID-WEEK competitions were played in a number of golf clubs last week but Storm Ciara put paid to the weekend schedule at clubs across the county, writes Séamus Hayes.

The weekly men’s singles competition at Kilrush was won by Noel Kilkenny (18) with 30 points. In the senior ladies scramble on Wednesday the winners were Lucy Blake, Agnes Shannon, Imy Kerrigan and Loretta Browne with 62 from Freda Moran, Jean Lorrigan, Clair Pyne and Margaret Hehir with 61 with third spot filled by Anne Cooper, Marie Bartlett and Pauline Kirk with 59.

A similar competition for the senior men on the same day was won by Bill Murphy, Bernard Coleman, Finbar McMahon, Noel Enright and Murt Collins from Brendan Carrig, Noel Cooney, Pat Shannon (Cranny) and Seamus O’Doherty with third place filled by Tom McGrath, Sean Moran, Pat Shannon (Kilrush) and John Saunders. All three teams scored 65 points.

Last week’s ladies 13 hole singles stableford competition at Ennis was won by Kitty Morris (12) with 29 points from Sinead Hegarty (28) with 28 and Ann O’Loughlin (14) with 26. In the ladies 9 hole competition Mary Glynn (31) was the winner with 15 points.

In the senior ladies competition last week the winners were Kate O’Ceallaigh, Ann White and Mary Lenihan with 40 1/6. In second place were Margaret Flanagan, Anne Casey and Carmel Verling with 44 1/3 while third spot was filled by Mary Leahy, Kathleen Pyne and Deirdre Molyneaux with 45 ½.

STELLAR career start continued on Saturday in Galway as Burnpark Floyd made it seven wins from seven.

There are not many graded sprinters that start their career with seven wins from seven starts but the Michael Browne of Cree owned Burnpark Floyd has done just that. In the S4 graded sixth contest, he overcame a terrible start to gain a short head success over Newhall Torpedo in 19.60. Unlike his other wins Burnpark Floyd was last away from the traps as Newhall Torpedo and Glorias Pet set the pace race towards the opening bend.

At the bend though the leader ran a little wide and Burnpark Floyd who was now hitting top gear needed a second invitation as he swept through to lead in the rails at the crown of the home bend.

On straightening for home Newhall Torpedo and Burnpark Floyd set down to scrap it out with Floyd just gaining the day to make it a magnificent seven.

The top graded contest of the night was the A2 graded ninth race. In this, Cloneyogan Blaze owned by Moy’s Siobhan Garrahy held off the challenge of Headleys Victor who closed the gap to three parts of a length in 29.48.

Garryfine Rickie got off the mark at the third attempt in the S7 graded contest.

Owned by David Browne of Kilmihil, they celebrated a three and a quarter lengths victory in a time of 19.47.

On Friday night it was worth the wait for the Cratloe contingent. Ger Manly’s Confused Reilly recorded a magnificent nineteenth career success, coming in as a reserve he led off the second bend on his way to a two and a quarter length success over the staying on Kaiser Kubrick in 29.80.

Emily Browne from Cree watched her Burnpark Dumbo enjoy a welcome change of luck in race eight. Dumbo recorded his maiden success at the fourth attempt by a rapidly diminishing neck over Beer Cashier in 29.69.

Having been hampered in all three starts to date the winner enjoyed a dream passage along the rails racing to the opening bend to lead from Beer Cashier and Liscarra Bonus. Racing down the back Burnpark Dumbo opened up a three length advantage on his rivals but from the home bend he was running on fumes with the line just coming to his rescue as Beer Cashier closed with every stride.

American dream beckons for Kilfenora’s finest with PÁRAIC McMAHON

“S

This week, as part of our 20x20 series we meet 19-year-old Clare international athlete Jo Keane, who is in the process of preparing to move to the US to take up a scholarship

PORT gives you something to focus on” according to Jo Keane who is on countdown mode as she prepares to commence a scholarship in the US

this August.

Though only nineteen years of age, Jo is the highest profile female runner in the county having represented Ireland in World and European Championship semi-finals. Currently on a gap year following the completion of the Leaving Certificate last June, the exact destination as to where in America she will be going is yet to be finalised.

A gap year doesn’t mean Keane is dossing, far from it as the Kilfenora native trains six days a week with weekly physio and gym sessions also on her agenda. “I needed the year’s break. The Leaving Cert is tough, the whole year is building up to it, some people like my friends jump straight into college and sometimes it works out and other people wish they took a gap year. I initially wasn’t going to take a gap year and then I was going to go to the States in January but I didn’t know what I was going to do so I took the year out”.

When she does go Stateside, Jo has pinpointed The NCA as her first target, “It’s four years to try and get that, hopefully senior level in the Worlds and we’ll see about the Olympics, I would think they are most people’s goals but I’ve plenty of time still”.

With two schools All-Ireland titles and numerous club honours, one would assume Jo has been engrossed in running since her early years but that was not the case. “I drifted out. I started running when I was seven and I didn’t really like it, I was running in Mullagh and there was no girls, it was all guys so I stopped running, I was fifteen when I came back, now I’m running and there is still a lot more guys than girls”.

This break from the sport has been invaluable. “If you keep doing it from such a young age you might lost interest but if you have a break and come back into it I found that helped, I don’t know would I still be doing it if I kept going”.

Conserving energy before races is one of the biggest challenges for the bubbly 800m athlete who had an unfortunate incident with a fish in Sweden last year.

“I need to watch my meals, I made a mistake this year of eating fish beforehand, it wasn’t a good decision. I download movies on my phone so I’ve lots of time to rest, I tend to talk and do lots of things which tire you out”. The consumption of the fish forced her to get sick before last year’s European U20 semi-final, she confirmed that she has since eaten fish “but not before a race” and laughed off the prospects of it being a potential conspiracy theory.

volved in rowing back in her native Holland, both she and dad Brian have been busy ferrying Jo to races around Ireland while her sports-mad grandfather John Keane is always one for providing encouragement.

Headphones are a regular accessory for professional and amateur runners but not for the Corofin resident. “I like the quiet. Even before races I don’t listen to music, I enjoy what is going around me. A lot of the time especially when you go abroad they’re all serious with their music and drills. They’re caught up in it”.

Sonia O’Sullivan is rightly regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest sportspeople, Jo often finds herself competing against O’Sullivan’s daughter Sophie. “I think I’ve watched every race she has run, she is our greatest athlete”.

“This year myself and Sophie both had a bad result but her mum reassured us that she had days like that which is nice to hear, sometimes you think it is the end of the world when things don’t go right”.

As part of Team Ireland, a warm weather training camp in Portugal is what Keane highlighted as a defining moment in her sporting career. “I started racing in 2017 that was my first track race ever, before that it was the odd cross country, I won the All-Ireland kind of by accident, I was by far the slowest going into the race, I wasn’t expecting it and then I won which motivated me. Then I went on a warm weather training camp, since I came back I’ve changed everything, I kept improving. That year I ran every race I did a new PB, it’s starting to change now, the faster your time the harder it is to improve it”.

With Ennis Track, she is the oldest female of her group and finds herself mainly training with the men. Clubs need to hold open days in primary schools to entice more young girls into athletics, Jo felt. “They need to bring it into schools. In primary school, sport is there but not really, there are no facilities, there’s not as many people in West and North Clare, I started GAA through primary school. I went to cross country races but it was never big. My mum went to school in Holland and they said they had to gymnastics and a bit of each sport, they don’t do that here.

“In secondary it’s not that big, you’ve PE once a week and most people just sit around and do nothing, clubs need to go into schools and organise days so people see what it is like.

Primary school is the age where you figure out what you like and don’t like, it’s very important to bring it there”.

Happy and content with her progression to date, Jo has a smile on her face for the duration of the interview. Through her exploits she has brought joy to many but underneath the smile is a steely determination that is essential for all top athletes.
