TUAMGRANEY author Edna O’Brien has joined an esteemed list alongside Bono and Seamus Heaney having been awarded the highest cultural honour in France.

She was named Commander in the French “Ordre des Arts et Lettres” by Mrs Roselyne Bachelot, French Minister of Culture, during an online ceremony.

Minister Bachelot-Narquin described the Clare woman as “a legendary writer who has enriched Irish literature in inestimable ways” who also nurtured French literature.

HANNON Airport is in line for a major boost as a draft national strategy includes plans to have a rail spur to the town and its International Airport.

Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS), the provision of a rail link to Shannon is detailed as a key objective.

Costs for the LSMATS are calculated to total €1.4bn and have been devised by the National Transport Authority (NTA) who predict a €3.8bn benefit to the local economy in the Mid-West as a result of the additional infrastructure.

N EMOTIONAL milestone was marked in Centric Health Ennis on Friday last with 150 patients over the age of 80 vaccinated for COVID-19.

Fifteen clinicians and ten administration staff undertook vaccination duties between the hours of 9am and 3pm on Friday.

The group included in the over 80 cohort follow the over 85 age-group who received their vaccine two weeks previous.

“It was brilliant. Quickest lifesaver ever. Very gentle and painless,” Ennis native Tom Kenneally remarked of his experience.

The clinic marks the second successful vaccination of an age cohort at Centric Health Ennis as per HSE guidelines, having catered for the over 85 age group two weeks previous.

150 patients received their first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine by clinicians provided with full HSE training on the background and make-up of the vaccine and the most effective method of administration,

Deirdre added. A number of staff members are posted outside of the clinic to administer vaccines to the relevant age cohort that are unable to make the journey in.

Practice Manager Deirdre Kerin highlighted the success of the vaccination programme on the day, adding that over 70 per cent of Centric Health Clinics have administered the vaccine to date.

She stated: “It’s great to see the number of vaccines climbing, today can only be viewed as a positive.

“The feedback has been amazing. People are very emotional. Most of them haven’t left the house for quite a long time.”

One patient, Peadar White commented: “”I am so pleased to get the Covid injection as one who got Covid and knows what the symptoms are like and to be able to recover from it and then to receive the added bonus of the injection.”

“I would advise in speaking from experience of having Covid, that everyone should get the vaccination and work within safety regulations as prescribed,” the Ennis man said.

'STAYCATION boom' is predicted for Co Clare this summer.

Local politicians are confident Co Clare will reap rewards from another summer dependent on domestic tourism.

With this in mind, Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) pressed Clare County Council "to fully resource and put in place a robust plan for additional resources and facility management to ensure we can have a safe and enjoyable summer across the hot spots of our county" when an influx of visitors is expected.

Main visitor locations were reviewed by the West Clare Municipal District following the 2020 season which focused on resourcing, traffic congestion and response to the high level of visitors. A cross-directorate group has been formed to agree a future plan for coastal facilities.

Director of Service, Leonard Cleary confirmed, "dedicated crews are being identified and additional improvement works are planned for a number of locations throughout the county". As part of the review, "con-

sideration is being given to how traffic and parking is being managed with a view to having a more sustainable model into the future.

Some of these changes are dependent on financial and human resources available to Clare County Council".

Hope was expressed by Cllr Garrihy that the country would be in a better place during the summer allowing the possibility of crowds to flock to "beautiful places" within the county. "This is a very hopeful motion, my intention that we plan for success," the Lisdoonvarna native outlined. He detailed how local communities were placed under additional pressure due to the influx in persons coming to Clare.

"Last year we got a staycation boom and I'm expecting the same thing again this year," Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) declared. A repeat performance would support "many jobs" locally he identified. "We had the derogation of sand dunes, traffic congestion, we had Council staff who worked diligently to try control numbers and facilitate the tourists".

Actions of the local authority during the pandemic were commended by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) who said the Council "weren't found wanting and didn't act in haste". He advised the Executive team not to take their questioning as a criticism. Decreasing case numbers "didn't happen by accident," Cllr

Gabriel Keating (FG) acknowledged. "I see it travelling the coutryside, meeting less and less people. It is about getting the message out".

Confidence was expressed that Clare will capitalise on another successful season by Cllr Pat Daly (FF). "I've no doubt Clare County Council won't be found wanting for

additional resources".

He lamented the amount of buses travelling to the Cliffs of Moher from Cork and Dublin, "we have to market Shannon Airport which is the most important thing for Clare, I would love to see the day with people staying in Lahinch, Miltown, Ennis and the surrounds".

Complex COVID-19 workplace Corofin students being refused outbreaks under investigation seat on Ennistymon school bus

by PÁRAIC McMAHON THE Clare Echo has learned that the Department of Public Health Mid-West are investigating complex outbreaks in the county in workplaces. "These include outbreaks in workplaces, some of which are linked to clusters in households; multi-household outbreaks; outbreaks associated with funerals; and outbreaks among households and extended family members, arising out of household visits," a spokesperson confirmed.

In the week ending March 6th, there were 66 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Clare reflecting a steady decrease in recent weeks. "For the

first time in almost four months, we are seeing early indications that Clare is returning to a sustained period of single digit increases on a daily basis. This is a direct result of the community's diligent efforts since Level 5 restrictions were introduced".

Confirmed cases have been encouraged to speak openly with contact tracers. Hesitancy has been noted in a small number of instances among young people to be fully forthcoming with information. "We are seeing this similar pattern in all age groups, albeit in small numbers, in multi-household outbreaks in housing estates and communities," the spokesperson added.

ELIGIBILITY for transport to Ennistymon schools needs to be modified to include students in North Clare as some teenagers are being accepted into a school but are refused a seat on the bus.

Correspondence is to be issued to the Department of Education and Skills seeking a modification to the criteria used to determine the eligibility for school transport following a proposal by elected representatives in North and West Clare.

Both the Department and Bus Éireann were urged to “redefine the catchment area for Ennistymon secondary schools allowing pupils from Corofin and environs to become eligible for transport to these secondary schools on a phased basis,” Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) detailed in a proposal to the West Clare Municipal District.

Students living further than 4.7km from their school are eligible for school transport, Cllr Killeen stated.

A “huge increase” in numbers attending primary schools in North Clare is creating difficulty on the demand for second level places in Ennis leading to many unsuccessful applications.

Killeen noted that the reputation of secondary schools in Ennistymon entices the interest of people of Corofin as a viable option for them but cautioned that the buses for Ennistymon are currently full.

Parents are left waiting until August for clarity on their request for school transport having made applications in April, the Corofin man outlined.

He highlighted that some parents are dropping their children to school in the morning and travelling to work in places like the Midlands before collecting their child that evening because of ineligibility for buses.

“We need to try work with our secondary schools to introduce different system for enrolment along the line of CAO, give a scale of choice. Some students applied for Ennistymon but can’t get a seat on the bus,” Killeen added.

Widening the remit of choice was required, Cllr Shane Talty (FF) agreed. “In this particular case, it is not that you’re seeing a threat to other schools, you are not undermining the sustainability of the Ennis schools by giving the option to travel to Ennistymon. Most of the schools in Ennis are already operating at capacity”.

Rise in domestic abuse incidents are 'alarming' PÁRAIC MCMAHON

N INCREASE in domestic abuse incidents throughout the country during 2020 has been described as "alarming" by a Clare TD. Provisional figures available to An Garda Síochána for 2020 reveal that Gardaí received approximately 43,000 calls to respond to domestic abuse incidents, representing a 16% increase on 2019.

In excess of 4000 criminal charges were referred for breaches of domestic abuse court orders, up 25% on 2019, and in excess of 7600 criminal charges in total for crimes involving an element of domestic abuse were reported in 2020, up 24% on 2019, the Department of Justice stated in response to a parliamentary question from Deputy Michael McNamara (IND).

More than 4,300 domestic abuse court orders were notified to Gardaí last year, the Department confirmed. Three convictions were recorded for coercive control, one Circuit Court conviction by Jury following trial, one

Circuit Court Conviction on plea of guilty and one District Court conviction on a plea of Guilty.

Deputy McNamara commented, "Bearing in mind that Ireland is experiencing an extraordinary time of crisis, these numbers are shocking and highlight the wider implications for society of the pandemic and the Government's response to it".

"While there are a number of organisations across Ireland working tirelessly to provide

professional support to domestic abuse survivors, it is clear that wider supports are needed in light of the growing incidences of domestic abuse," he added. "Furthermore, NPHET in its recommendations to Government must take cognisance of the implications of ongoing restrictions for society."

In her response to the Clare TD, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee (FG) said, "I would like to assure the Deputy that An Garda Síochána attaches the highest priority to domestic abuse incidents and in order to ensure appropriate targeted and proactive action and supports during the pandemic established Operation Faoiseamh. Operation Faoiseamh continues to ensure that victims of domestic abuse are supported and protected by An Garda Síochána during this extraordinary time and ensures that domestic abuse incidents are receiving the highest priority response."

"I can also assure the Deputy that tackling domestic abuse and providing supports for victims is a priority for me as Minister and for Government. I am working with my colleagues and with our partners to ensure we have an appropriate collective national response that supports victims and holds perpetrators to account," added the Minister.

Housing shortage to be aggravated A HOUSING shortage will be aggravated by the continued halt in construction, a Newmarket-on-Fergus representative has warned, writes Páraic McMahon.

Clare County Council's build programme has been impacted by the return of Level 5 restrictions at the beginning of the year.

The target of achieving 94 units of accommodation is "no longer fully achievable," a senior official within the local authority admitted. Last year, 145 units of social housing were delivered by the local authority through the capital delivery programme.

"The restrictions are also impacting developments which are not at construction stage in that necessary site investigations cannot be undertaken at this time," Director Anne Haugh stated.

Approval to acquire 31 units was received last year with number of permissible acquisitions described as limiting. New housing targets for Clare will be set under the Housing for All multi-annual housing programme due to be published in the second quarter of this year.

Detail on the impact of COVID-19 on the Council's housing programme was sought

by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) at Monday's meeting of the local authority. "We are all aware of the people waiting on houses and our list is getting longer".

"There is no plan B to initiate new incentives to give leeway in the private sector to work longer and on weekends, I've never seen it in modern history. Everything will go back a year plus which will aggravate the problem".

Just one fine paid for dog fouling last year CIAN O’BROIN

NLY one fine issued for dog fouling in Clare last year was paid with 83 complaints submitted on the matter.

An increase in dog fouling has been recorded by Clare County Council, with several initiatives in operation in a bid to eradicate the problem.

Two weeks ago, evidence emerged on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne Show, detailing that around half of the country's local authorities failed to issue a single fine for dog fouling in 2020.

to issue a fine in relation to dog fouling in 2020. These include Galway City, Sligo, Offaly, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Leitrim and Carlow County Councils. It was also found that In the same year, 40% of the 47 Fixed Penalty Notices dished out to pet-owners who did not scoop their dog's waste went unpaid.

Clare County Council has recorded 83 complaints relating to dog fouling in 2020.

This subsequently led to four fines being issued, with only one of these successfully being paid. To date in 2021, 19 complaints have been lodged with the Council, leading to one fine, which has successfully been paid.

Fines are issued under Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Act. The Environmental Patrol Wardens issue fines where there is evidence of an offence. In some cases, members of the public supply information which allows the local authority to issue a fine.

A spokesperson for Clare County Council stated: "We encourage dog owners to always clean up after their dog using any bag and disposing of it in a public litter bin.

Where there is no public litter bin available, we ask dog owners to bring home their dog waste and place it in their general waste bin."

Some of the efforts involved in countering the issue of dog fouling in the county include a Waste Enforcement Team, who

along with the Dog Warden carry out patrols at various locations throughout the county. During these patrols dog-owners are actively engaged and advised of their responsibilities.

Signage is also erected, and footpath stencils are used at known dog littering black spots to remind dog owners of their responsibilities. Issuing of written correspondence in areas where dog littering is occurring is also being carried out.

Responsible dog ownership is promoted through local media such as The Clare Echo to create "a hard-hitting visual awareness campaign which depicts the impact of dog fouling. This awareness campaign highlights both health implications from dog fouling and also the importance of dog owner responsibility."

Provision of free dog litter bags, the creation of an animation awareness series, supporting Dogs Trust and a Green Dog Walkers Campaign also assist in combatting county-wide dog fouling.

"The majority of people walking dogs in public spaces are conscientious about picking up dog litter and can help get the message out to others by leading by example," the Council stated.

Illegal dumping continues to hamper enjoyment of landscape

PUBLIC enjoyment of nature has been hampered by an increased incidence of illegal dumping during the pandemic while the people of Clare have been urged to be more vigilant around waste collection.

Establishing a temporary action group "to tackle illegal dumping and fly tipping" for a period of 12 to 18 months was put forward by Cllr Alan O'Callaghan (FF) at a meeting of Clare County Council's Physical Development SPC. Environmental representative, James Gillar voiced his support for a taskforce on illegal dumping as did Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF). "It effects adversely our enjoyment of nature and we've all come back to nature because of the pandemic," she stated.

Efforts to deal with illegal dumping are not having the desired results, Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) believed.

"The local authority unfortu-

nately have an awful lot of time, effort and funding put into illegal dumping over the last couple of years but I don't see it improving".

Director of Service, Carmel Kirby agreed that the outdoors and the county landscape was being enjoyed more by the Clare public over the past twelve months.

"I think the people can most help us with illegal dumping is the public itself, as long as the public is retaining unauthorised waste collection services who are in turn dumping illegally across our landscape, that is where the primary problem lies," she outlined.

GDPR is currently prohibiting the Council from using CCTV to monitor illegal dumping while a request is currently with the Garda Commissioner seeking an exemption. "We are taking people to Court, there are fines but when we get to Court it is not always looked on favourably to give out the big fines," Kirby commented.

Plans to half the amount of new doctor jobs 'a slap in the face'

lans to half the amount of positions for newly-qualified doctors in Clare and Limerick represent a "slap in the face" to frontline workers.

The Clare Echo has been contacted by concerned health professionals who have flagged plans from the HSE to cut in half positions for newly-qualified doctors in Clare and Limerick.

Dr Cormac Duff warned, "In July 2021, our hospitals will lose 49 of their current 99 intern doctors".

Hundreds of additional jobs were created as the pandemic emerged "allowing every graduating doctor the chance to stay and work in Ireland. This year, as the pandemic and resultant health crisis continue, the decision has been made not to offer the additional jobs to the 2021 cohort of interns.

"As a result of this decision, the vast majority of international graduating doctors will be forced to leave Ireland to work as doctors. Our health service will be left ever more understaffed – and most importantly, our patients will suffer," Cormac stated.

Cormac who worked at University Maternity Hospital Limerick up until January outlined, "We train doctors to excellent standards, we have a very high quality of medical training in Ireland. We create this highly skilled workforce and then the minute they're ready to work we show them the door and send them packing. It doesn't make any sense at all."

An intercollegiate group of medical students, both Irish and international, are calling on Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly (FF) to reverse the decision. More than 3,850 persons have signed an online petition seeking the decision to be changed.

Clare TD, Joe Carey (FG) hit out at the potential of the posts being slashed particularly given the efforts of frontline workers over the past twelve months. The outcome, he cautioned would force more people to move abroad to find work.

Deputy Carey has written to Minister Donnelly to get the decision reversed. "As the Covid-19 pandemic emerged, hundreds of additional intern jobs were created, allowing every graduating doctor the chance to stay and work in Ireland. Further understaffing of the health service will be experienced, the Clarecastle man warned. "Most importantly, our patients will suffer". He said the move is "a slap in the face for the heroes who answered their country's call in our hour of need".

The Irish Medical Organisation has written to the HSE about the problem, most recently last month. Industrial relations officer Paul Maier said: "It is urgent that this is now resolved." He questioned the HSE's estimate that returning to 720 interns is enough to fill the vacant posts as hospitals prepare to tackle huge waiting lists after the pandemic. "Our view is that there are not enough doctors at any level in Irish hospitals at this stage," he added. Maier was also critical of the impact on non-EU doctors.

Pandemic a catalyst for relapse, says Considine CIAN O’BROIN

RECOVERING alcoholic Noel Considine has stressed the difficulty of social isolation on recovering addicts throughout the pandemic.

The Clarecastle man suffered from alcoholism for 30 years. Affecting every area of his life, his addiction led to nine hospitalisations before the age of 21, all in the hope of “drying out”.

Seven years ago, he stood on a bridge in Limerick City on a cold Christmas Eve, with the intention of taking his own life. Saving himself from certain death, Noel decided to receive treatment from Bushy Park that Christmas, marking his sixth enrolment in a rehabilitation centre.

Sober ever since, his greatest joy in life is returning to Clarecastle to visit his mother, son and grand-daughter and seeing the joy he can finally bring to their lives.

Now a car sales manager in Galway, Noel admits isolation wrought

by Covid-19 has presented challenges for recovering addicts.

“I live on my own and, like many others, am facing massive isolation. For other recovering addicts Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), aftercare or contact with other addicts can be a lifeline. If you asked me a few years ago, what would be my biggest fear as a recovering addict, it would be isolation. Not having contact is everybody’s worst nightmare. Physical AA meetings have a maximum capacity of 15 people.

Who’s to say who gets left out in a group of 30? There are Zoom meeting too that cater for bigger groups but I prefer the face-to-face connection, so they’re not for me.

I’m lucky to be out working and meeting people but for others, it’s extremely difficult,” the ex-Wexford hurling goalkeeper coach stated.

Noel alludes to the accessible means of home drinking during the pandemic. “Drink does change us

all,” he stated. He believes that willpower is not the catalyst for change but want power. “If willpower were involved, I would have stopped drinking at 20. We have to want to change. When we decide to stop drinking for good, we must accept that we are an alcoholic. That is where I fell down. I always admitted but never accepted,” he added.

The 12-steps programme practiced by recovering addicts centres around lifestyle. Only the first step mentions alcohol. COVID has increased the possibility of relapsing.

Noel has attributed this to a loss in faith or the inability to contact a sponsor. Drawing on experience, his relapses began six months before picking up his first drink. Falling prey to previous behaviours and thinking is where the seed is sown. Now Noel’s faith keeps him strong and he admits to being a different person. “I don’t ever want to go back to that life ever again.”

Noel now takes one day at a time. “Two years ago, my life was

marked by a tragic event. This would have been an excuse to pick up a drink, but I didn’t. For the first time ever, I have learned to love myself. I always hated myself. Any person, place or thing that interferes with my sobriety, has to go.

Seven years ago, when I stood on that bridge with €3 to my name and wanted to kill myself, I had absolutely nothing or nobody. My problems today are all first world problems. I have a great life now. I will never let what sobriety gave to me, take away my sobriety.”

Since leaving his Wexford role, the three-time Clare SHC winner with Clarecastle is looking forward to linking in with five teams for this season. His time will be divided between Sixmilebridge, Brendan Bugler’s Birr in Offaly, two sessions with Wexford hurling club St. James, Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry in Galway, and Rahoon/Newcastle GAA in Galway. “I don’t know where I’m going to fit in an AA meeting,” he jokes.

EAVING the post of conservation officer vacant contributed to demolition of a historic building in Ennis town.

In a proposal to the local authority, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) urged Clare County Council to fill the post of conservation officer. “The position has been vacant for some time and there are community projects and other planning issues that need the input of same”.

Director of Economic Development, Liam Conneally said the matter is currently being reviewed by the Executive, “the council will continue to engage external conservation expertise where required until such time as the position is filled”. He expressed his satisfaction that conservation issues arising in relation to Section 57 declaration requests, planning applications requiring conservation input and the upcoming Clare County Development Plan 2022-2028 “will be adequately addressed”.

He revealed that one unsuccessful attempt to replace the conservation officer has been made. “We’ve tweaked the duties in the post to widen the net in the qualifications required”.

Several community workers had raised their concern with Cllr Ryan. “I am hopeful that somebody would be appointed in the near future. It is probably not easy to fill the position,” he conceded.

Huge importance is associated with the position, Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) affirmed. “We’re very proud of our heritage, the lack of a conservation officer

was highlighted recently with the knocking of the beautiful building at the Old Braids site in Ennis,” he stated.

In September, the historic Old Braids chimney was demolished. It was described at the time by Better Ennis as “a landmark that made our skyline that little bit more unique”.

Kilkee’s centre is an area of conservation, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) highlighted, the absence of such an officer has been visible with recent developments at the coastal location he believed. “This is a serious deficit in the Council. It is telling on us, the decision not to have the officer”.

Consultants are being liaised with on major projects, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) acknowledged. “There are lots of buildings in Co Clare and people don’t know if they are of conservation value or not. It is necessary that the vacancy would be filled”. Cllr John Crowe (FG) commented, “It is very important that we have an officer in our county. All our villages and towns are empty”.

Guidance of a conservation officer is needed in the county, Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) felt. “My own homeplace dates back to 1660s, my brother took it on and got great assistance from Dick Cronin, a lot of the work at The Castle in Clarecastle was also supported by Dick Cronin”. A contact should be made available to councillors until an appointment is made, Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) suggested.

‘St Patrick can rid us of Covid-19’

FAITH must be placed in Ireland’s patron saint to help rid the country of COVID-19, a West Clare elected representative has said.

Virtual celebrations of St Patrick’s Day have been organised by Clare County Council with three separate €300 prizes on offer for persons who submit videos online to the local authority. ‘Connecting Clare’ is the theme of the celebrations with best interpretation of theme, best children’s theme and most imaginative entry the categories to win prizes in.

Speaking at Monday’s meeting of the County Council, Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) paid tribute to the personnel responsible for putting plans in place for the

virtual celebration. He also took the opportunity to say the county was fortunate to have “a good woman in the Chair for International Women’s Day” in the guise of Cllr Mary Howard (FG).

“I want to remember St Patrick, he brought the faith to Ireland, it would be a good idea to wear the shamrock on St Patrick’s Day. If you remember St Patrick banished the snakes out of Ireland, if we were to have faith in him and wear the shamrock he might banish the p andemic out of Ireland and we would return to normal,” Cllr Keating stated.

HSE slammed for continued restrictions on speech and language therapy

by PÁRAIC McMAHON ONTINUED loss of speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy services for children and adults is having a huge negative impact while the HSE were brandished an “absolute disgrace” for their dealings of the services.

An “urgent need” for the HSE to reinstate the services was demonstrated by Cllr Susan Crawford (GP) at Monday’s meeting of Clare County Council.

“Even with Covid restrictions, efforts should be made to arrange and maintain ongoing therapies virtually. To date, anecdotally many service users in children and adult services have been left without therapy services.”

A virtual resumption of the services would make a difference, the Inagh native outlined.

The importance of early intervention in maximising the benefits of the services is waning, she warned.

“Early intervention is key for all of them and being left without them is hugely impactful on all their lives”. She said the replies issued by the HSE at sittings of the Regional Health Forum West were “disingenuous and not factual”.

Her proposal was seconded by Cllr Mary Howard (FG) who believed the absence of the services was “very unfair”.

Matters have become “progressively worse” over the last 23 years, Cllr Ann Norton (IND) stated of the provision of such services.

She recalled that when at the time of opening the Clare Crusaders Clinic, she was told it offered the HSE an ability to walk away.

“I am inundated on a daily basis with parents looking to be part of the clinic so that they can get therapy, we are only supposed to be providing the service as an extra but unfortunately for many years we’ve been the only place providing therapy.

“This country when it comes to the HSE, they are an absolute disgrace, they have let us down hugely, I don’t know how many times I asked questions and listened to garbage handed out at the HSE Forum.

“The HSE need to start upping their game and start supporting people with disabilities,” the Barefield woman commented.

Her remarks prompted Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) to acknowledge the role of the HSE during the last 12 months, “they have worked hard to save lives, it is important to say that”.

He said the return to school has made a visible difference for pupils and added his support to the motion.

Services must be reinstated, Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) maintained.

“This is very personal to me at the moment, our own little man is at that stage where he needs speech and language therapy.

“By the time you figure out where to go as an advocate for your child the time can often be lost. The development of a child is crucial”.

Use the cúpla focal during Seachtain na Gaeilge

Established by Conradh na Gaeilge in 1902, Seachtain na Gaeilge is the biggest international Irish-language festival promoting the use of Irish language and culture, both at home and abroad.

In Clare, an online music series has been commissioned for Seachtain na Gaeilge which will be released on the YouTube page of Clare County Council prior to St Patrick's Day. An online ciorcal comhrá is to be held by the local authority to further promote the use of the Irish language while Irish language sessions for Council staff have been launched in recent weeks to encourage conversations as Gaeilge.

Speaking on Monday's meeting of Clare County Council, Cllr Mark Nestor (FF) detailed the importance of using the cúpla focal for both elected representatives and also Council management.

NNIS musician Laura Mulcahy will be championing a brand-new performance as part of Clare County Council's online celebration of Seachtain na Gaeilge this year.

Seachtain na Gaeilge is running from March 1st to 17th, with limited online events taking place due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Chief Executive of Clare County Council Pat Dowling described the events as "a timely and vital reminder of the significance of our language in shaping our county, our history and our environment, from ancient times to the present day and into the future".

One such event is a unique online music series specially commissioned for Seachtain na Gaeilge, featuring Laura Mulcahy, Ultan O'Brien and Mattu Noone.

Laura is joined by Sarah Ferrigan, Katie Theasby and Eoin O'Neill for two songs: Sunken Cemetery 1849, released last September and a brandnew song entitled Ink Slinger.

Both songs will be released as a single pre-recorded video performance, available on the Council's YouTube channel for Lá Fhéile Padraig.

Michael McCaughan extended the invitation to Laura to perform in February, following the

release of her latest song, The Ballad Of Lucy Sands. This is a recent commission for a film soundtrack on An Taobh Tuathail, Cian Ó Ciobhán's show on RTÉ RNaG, she explained.

Adding, "He was really enamoured of the song. It is very rare one comes across opportunities such as this, especially right now, so I feel incredibly lucky to be invited to take part."

An interest in music was inevitable, Laura expressed. "I grew up in a musical household. My father was an avid classical music fan and played the mouth organ and my mother played piano and also had voice training. I grew up with my grandmother's piano in the house, an old electric organ, tin whistles, guitars, accordions, recorders, fiddle. Anything that could be played, we seemed to have."

Laura has gone to extra lengths to entice listeners tuning into this year's Seachtain na Gaeilge with an immerse multimedia multiverse set, that she has designed in her studio. Her intention is to provide something extra for viewers beyond the music. Adding to the visual creativity of the backdrop is her costume, which she describes as "like everyone else's, only madder."

She stated: "It is important for people to celebrate Seachtain Na Gaeilge because our native language is a massive part of who we are as a people. Irish is indeed our mother tongue, informing to this day, our loquacious, mellifluous way of expressing ourselves, even when we are ag caint as Béarla".

ONE of the distinct fixtures in the town of Ennis, Paddy Haren has been laid to rest.

Paddy died unexpectedly on Friday at University Hospital Limerick. News of his death was met with immense sadness with a multitude of tributes flowing in online for the Kilmaley native.A gifted carpenter, Paddy worked as a foreman with the construction firm McAlpine in the United Kingdom. His work took him all over the world and Paddy was involved in the building of the Channel Tunnel, the bridges at Disneyland in Paris and also the Living Bridge at the University of Limerick ensuring that his talent was witnessed in many countries.

Regularly spotted along O'Connell St in the county town, Paddy was noted for his strong cups of tea, his devotion to his faith, his smoking and his gentle nature. Train users also enjoyed the occasional song from Paddy while travelling from Ennis to Limerick.

He was born on October 21st 1944 as the eighth of 11 children, attending Kilmaley NS before beginning his working life at the age of 11 at the Kilmaley Co-Op store, then starting at Fawl's Bar and later emigrating

to the UK aged 16.

Speaking at his funeral mass in St John's Church, Kilmaley, his niece Bridget highlighted the esteem he held within the construction industry. "He was a mathematical genius and had an incredible brain that allowed him to bring life to most complex construction designs which led him to travel all over the world. (...) He had a wonderful reputation as a hard worker and an intelligent man. Not forgetting his family, Paddy assisted his brothers Martin and Mick in getting their first start as independent sub-contractors".

a great character". She added, "After his retirement, Paddy bought a house in Summerhill and enjoyed his walks around the town, he became a character around the streets, he had a great affinity for people and the chats.

He could trace any family, any date and any history, he loved to converse on a wide variety of subjects from poetry to hurling, he would always tell Martin's wife Mansie that Mayo would never win an All-Ireland. He always wanted to know where you were working and would tell you to mind your job".

Fr Martin Blake outlined how Paddy's work allowed him to experience new places and cultures. He described Haren as a kind and patient gentleman, "he had many friends in Ennis and Kilmaley. The people of Ennis were very kind to him and looked out for him always. He was a great person, the family was number one for him".

Micheál Malone of D Barber Shop was among those to pay tribute to Paddy. "He was a regular visitor to my shop who loved to chat and trace about county Clare and talk about political affairs in the world," Malone recalled.

Paddy's loss is deeply regretted by his family and large circle of friends.

Women ‘have come a long way’ in An Garda Síochána CIAN O’BROIN

OMEN often have to work two to three times harder than their male counterparts, the second female to serve as Deputy Commissioner of An Garda Síochána has said.

Deputy Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon virtually addressed the NUIG Law Society for International Women’s Day, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing women who enlist in An Garda Síochána.

The Kilmurry McMahon woman, who was appointed to her role in February was joined by guest speakers Minister for Justice Helen McEntee (FG), Chair of the Council of the Bar of Ireland Maura McNally and former president of the Law Society of Ireland, practicing solicitor Michele O’ Boyle. The event was organised by Jessica O’Donoghue, Final Year Corporate Law Student from Lahinch.

Anne Marie spoke about joining the force in 1986, when women were mainly seen as a novelty and could only expect to perform basic desk duty and office work. “We have come a long way. Women were mainly con-

centrated in bigger cities and towns and not in the communities. We had to wear skirts.

That was really impractical. I’ve been very fortunate in the opportunities I have had. It wasn’t always easy. Combining parenting and working is a talent.

“Being highly organised and having good childcare is essential. It’s important to balance career options and family life. I firmly believe that equality for women cannot be achieved without women putting themselves forward for leadership roles in all walks of life.”

She paid homage to the women of An Garda Síochána who did this, paving the way forward for others. These include the first females who were assigned to crime investigations, drug investigations and traffic surveillance. This was achieved in a male dominated sector, where many felt they were the token woman, the UL graduate added.

“Today An Garda Síochána is a very different place to when those first 12 ladies joined in 1959,” she stated. Female membership within the force now stands above the EU average at 27 per cent and are an integral part of every unit and section across the organisation.

‘We never needed enjoyment more than we need it now’ PÁRAIC MCMAHON

KILFENORA man who became an overnight social media sensation in his attempts to get fit and healthy has spoken of his delight at providing enjoyment for the public during a difficult time.

Sixty seven year old Padraig Howley has amassed 79,000 followers on Instagram in the space of two weeks, a figure ‘influencers’ all over the world would likely sell a limb or family member for.

His warm, genuine and endearing nature has appealed to people as Padraig goes vegan for a period of 21 days in a bid to improve his health and nervous system following advice from doctors and health professionals.

By his own description, Padraig admitted to being “very traditional” with his diet which included a breakfast comprised of sausages, rashers, black and white pudding in the morning with a few beans. When he was advised to give up dairy, his youngest daughter Tara encouraged him to go vegan.

“To be quite honest I didn’t know what vegan was. I said I’d have a go if she helped me, she set up an Instagram page which I didn’t know anything about on the Monday night, by Tuesday evening she said I had a follower for every day of the year. It went crazy after that”.

Married to Geraldine with three daughters, Crusheen based Eimear, Fanore teacher Sharon and Riverdance member Tara, he laughed at the notion of their Kilfenora home becoming a landmark for tourists when restrictions ease. “A lot of people have said they must come and say hello, it reminds me of Clannad in Donegal, they had a B&B,

when they were touring they would tell people to call to the house, seemingly one summer there was more people calling to the house than staying at the B&B, I don’t think it will happen me”.

Messages of support have been a big plus in his endeavour. “At this hour of my life it doesn’t bother me,” he said of

the 79k followers. “I’ve got an awful lot of messages of support saying I’m helping people, it has got a massive reaction all over the world, it is unbelievable”.

Missing out on the big dinners he was accustomed to is proving difficult.

“When you’re out all day you’d be looking forward to the dinner, now I’ve to come back and cook for myself, sometimes the hunger is gone on me by the time I’ve the meal cooked. I miss certain foods, I’m nearly 68 years old and I didn’t know anything else. My health is worth it and that’s the way I look at it, nobody wants to be in hospital, it is a call for me to cop myself on,” he told The Clare Echo.

Howley has yet to decide if he will stay vegan when the challenge concludes later this month.

“Companies all over Ireland have sent me food that I never knew existed, the other morning I had a sausage with a black and white pudding, unless you knew you wouldn’t have known the difference. I’d decide I’d cook myself, I’m finding it funny because I wasn’t used to cooking but I think I must have picked the hardest recipes in the book, they sounded simple but they weren’t that simple”.

His peers have also been given a nudge to get active while slagging is commonplace anytime Padraig answers the phone, “people ring me and say ‘oh I thought you wouldn’t answer the phone at all, you’re a celebrity now’. We never needed enjoyment more than we need it now. I’ve no idea how the following got so big, it just happened, people are getting enjoyment out of it and we’ll enjoy it while it is there”.

Staying positive is key, the welder of 40 years concluded.

“Let’s try stay positive for another while, the lockdown has been going on for so long so we need to stay positive.

“The other thing I’ll say is to be yourself, there is no point trying to be anyone else or copying other people, people will like you or they might not, once you are yourself is the main thing, that’s how I’ve been all my life”.

'Dezoning war' as rural future is on the line

by PÁRAIC McMAHON A 'DEZONING WAR' is likely to lead to Clare councillors rejecting a proposed County Development Plan with the survival of rural parts of the county on the line.

Strong sentiments were issued at Monday's virtual sitting of the local authority as councillors from across the county. Deep worries have been raised in places like Broadford, Carrigaholt, Doolin and Cooraclare that their absence of wastewater infrastructure will result in lands being dezoned and disabling the potential of future developments in a residential and commercial sense.

Condemnation was also voiced at a decision to defer a motion which outlined the councillors planned stance to reject the Development Plan if the two tier approach to land zoning as contained within Appendix 3 of the National Planning Framework was followed.

Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) admitted to being "played" by the proposal's deferral.

While this was removed from the agenda, Cllr Joe Cooney's motion for the Council to have "a cautious approach" to dezoning lands in rural areas without access wastewater treatment facilities remained on the clár.

Land-use zoning within settlements is to be reviewed as part of

the preparation of the Clare County Development Plan 2022-2028.

"It is the intention of the Council in doing so that opportunities will be explored with Irish Water towards delivering appropriate wastewater treatment solutions to facilitate the future sustainable growth of rural towns and villages currently with no or inadequate wastewater treatment infrastructure. The growth and prosperity of our rural towns and villages which also serve their rural hinterlands is vital to sustain our local economy," Director of Economic Development Liam Conneally stated.

Speaking on Monday, Cllr Cooney highlighted the serious concern brewing in communities on the subject. "There is no point saying there isn't serious concern

for zoning of lands that don't have proper infrastructure, a lot of these in our county, most of them in the rural parts and a fear is there that they will be left behind". Parts of the county will be left behind waiting on the infrastructure from Irish Water, he said.

Contents of the NPF were labelled "disturbing" by Cllr Michael Begley (IND) specifically content which stated lands in rural communities should be zoned and also de-zone previously zoned lands due to the absence of wastewater infrastructure. "We really need to smarten up here. We're going to hit a crisis point if there isn't something done in the near future," Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) remarked. A "word of warning" was issued

by Cllr Pat Burke (FG) that a different approach will be taken when it comes to voting on the Plan. "It's our plan we're going to deal with it differently this time while An Post close in broadband, Bank of Ireland close in Tulla and we're asked to dezone lands, I won't be led on what to do for the village of Broadford".

Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) responded, "It is supposed to be our plan but I have my doubts, it is our plan up to a point, if we don't act on our reserved function plenty of Executives will act on our behalf. The debate has to happen".

Rural areas are feeling the brunt of population decline due to the missing infrastructure, Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) maintained. "Has sci-

ence not moved forward enough to allow innovative wastewater treatment solutions. We cannot allow dezoning". Irish Water's refusal to add the infrastructure to Cooraclare and Carrigaholt was akin to the "HSE saying they won't treat sick people," Cllr Murphy said.

Plans for affordable housing to focus on large towns plus the tiered approach rang alarm bells for Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG). "If that objective and strategy follows this forget a perfect storm it is a perfect tsunami and no rural town will survive.

Zoning land alone will not provide population, there is plenty of land zoned for last 20 years, this isn't about Doolin or Carrigaholt, it is about our whole county".

Local authorities are constrained

by Government policy, Conneally told the meeting. "This is a countrywide issue, it is an issue that will have to be raised at a national level.

The eye isn't off the ball here, we're very sure on where we want to go, it is just how we get there, will be using every available tool to us".

Senior Ministers have been spoken to on the matter, Chief Executive Pat Dowling confirmed. "One fundamental has changed, we've lost control, we're dealing with another state body – Irish Water". He said it is "glaringly obvious" power needs to be returned to local authorities to build the water infrastructure.

N ENNIS woman has been appointed the first female editor of a leading local newspaper.

From the Kilrush Rd in the county town, Siobhán Cronin now holds the distinction of becoming the first female editor in the 132 year history of The Southern Star with her promotion from News Editor announced on International Women’s Day. The Southern Star previously had General Michael Collins as a shareholder. When Siobhán’s father, Tommy Cronin was promoted to Head of Radio at Cork Airport in 1978, the Cronin family moved from Clare to the Rebel County.

Siobhán attended Holy Family primary school and Christ King Secondary in Turner’s Cross before graduating with an honours degree in journalism at TU Dublin.

A SMALLER-SCALED version of the Milk Market in Limerick has been touted as a potential use of the Market Building in Ennis.

Since its official opening in September 2016, the Garraunakilla facility has been the source of much debate. Plenty of this has centred around its €500,000 price tag.

In a proposal before last week’s meeting of the Ennis Municipal District, Cllr Pat Daly (FF) asked that all stakeholders be brought together to discuss the building’s future.

This request will be addressed after the Covid pandemic, senior executive officer Leonore O’Neill responded.

Reflecting on the planning regarding the development, Cllr Daly acknowledged, “When you look at it, the Market Building

was supposed to regenerate the area, it was a great plan. Farmers Market used to come in there every Friday, it was a fantastic success and they moved out to Roslevan where I believe it is very successful and best of luck to them”.

Anti-social behaviour is occurring at the location on a daily basis, the former Mayor of Clare claimed. “People parking there are being asked do they want their car minded, it reminds me of going to Dublin for matches with people paying to make sure nothing happened their cars”.

With no sign of the Farmers Market returning, he said an alternative must be found and suggested a smaller scale version of the Milk Market. Daly referenced previous calls from Cllr Mary Howard (FG) for young musicians to be allowed play in the facility as another potential use.

Plans for musical concerts at the Market were scuppered by the pandemic, Cllr Howard lamented. “The Market Building had a baptism of fire, it went pear-shaped because building works went on so long. It should be a hugely positive building for the town,” she commented. The anti-social behaviour element had garnered attention but believed it had promise as a venue.

Artisan food producers not involved with the Farmer’s Market in Roslevan could be contacted, Howard felt. “We started the Chapel Lane Market with no funds, we hadn’t a penny. It is in the centre of town, it shouldn’t be a problem to get people in there”. The question she posed was how to make the people of Ennis proud of the building.

Airport rail link proposed by NTA PÁRAIC MCMAHON

ROVISION of a rail link for Shannon is included as an objective of the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS) which will include a spur to Shannon Airport.

Plans for the LSMATS were unveiled by the National Transport Authority (NTA) in September and are estimated to cost a total of €1.4bn, including €50m in walking infrastructure, €69m in cycling infrastructure and €405m in bus infrastructure. €3.8bn in benefits to the local economy as a consequence of the additional infrastructure are also predicted.

manager David Clements outlined that the provision of a rail link to Shannon formed a key objective of the strategy.

Thus far, 112 submissions were received for the LSMATS, the main issues raised are related to COVID-19, public consultation, targets, delivery, vision, ambition, rail, climate change, accessibility, regeneration, consolidation of Limerick City and the modelling process used. Planned public engagement was curtailed on account of the pandemic and the NTA participated in 11 events over a six week period online in what he called an “adequate” response.

Lack of investment in a heavy rail network was one of the critiques of the strategy, Clements advised. “Demand for travel would not justify light rail on any corridor following detailed analysis,” he said. An objective to provide a rail link to Shannon remains with a number of scenarios to be exam-

ined. “It should be an objective to provide a Shannon Airport rail link in the County Development Plan,” David stated.

Insufficient emphasis was placed on public transport access, the submissions believed with the need for accessible pedestrian and cycling environment highlighted.

“The NTA is in the process of making our public transport fleet fully accessible,” he added.

“The line from Limerick to Galway has trebled, over 500,000 people used it last year, the need for it is there, it is something that should be brought to the fore”. Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) described the potential rail link as a “vital piece of infrastructure for the Mid-West region”.

Deputy Chief Executive of the NTA, Hugh Creegan conceded that the bus network had failings when it came to disability access. He confirmed an investment in buses with lower floors to allow wheelchair access through a ramp rather than “a complicated lift process” was being pursued for Shannon.

He said the rail spur would be fully accessible for persons with disabilities.

Minister Ryan urged to give airport attention it deserves

LOCAL politicians in Clare have disputed the views of their national counterparts when it comes to filling a high-profile vacancy at Shannon Group.

Shannon Group has been without a Chairperson since Rose Hynes' additional 12 month contract extension expired in August. Last month, Aaron Forde the ex Chief Executive of agri-business Aurivo was announced as her successor but Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan (GP) was forced to scrap his appointment when a series of distasteful old tweets emerged.

Clare's Government TDs, Cathal Crowe (FF) and Joe Carey (FG) had called on Minister Ryan to re-start the process of appointing the new Chairperson following the controversy.

However, on Monday, a motion from Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) seeking Minister Ryan to "restructure the Shannon Group board and appoint a chairperson to ensure that Shannon and Co. Clare are ready and open for business when world travel and tourism return to normal" was unanimously backed.

A feeling that "Clare will be left behind" exists among business personnel, Cllr Ryan stated. He felt the Board needed to be comprised of individuals with an interest in Shannon Airport and the surrounding area.

He added, "It is important that whoever chairs the board has a knowledge of aviation and airports as a whole, otherwise when the skies are open Shannon Airport will be left behind and our county will be the poorer for it.

“I know people have called for Minister

to delay it, the proper person is out there if people in the Department put their hands together and find the person".

An attempt to appoint Forde was described by Cllr Ann Norton (IND) as "a shambles" and a move which demonstrated that "there is very little thought of Shannon Airport".

There was a "hap-hazard approach" to filling the vacancy, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) believed. He queried what a restructuring of the Board would entail but pressed the need for Clare County Council representation within the Group.

Top class marketing skills and an excellent knowledge of aviation are among key traits for the chosen person, Cllr Pat Daly (FF) surmised. "Shannon is losing out hugely to Dublin Airport when you see thousands coming to the Cliffs on a daily basis. Domhnall Slattery is a top class aviation man, I wondered was he approached.

I would hope the Minister acts quickly because Shannon is losing out in a big way".

Attention of the national media for Shannon Airport only appears to come for negative reports, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) felt Possessing an aviation background is critical for the job spec, Cllr Pat O'Gorman (FF) detailed. He highlighted the ongoing developments in Shannon Industrial Estate and Westpark. "There is a major hub for aviation in Shannon, if we have the right man in the Airport, you have the infrastructure and road network, if the right man is in place the spin off will be there". He apologised when corrected by Cllr Norton to say the right candidate could also be a woman.

France’s highest cultural honour awarded to author Edna O’Brien PÁRAIC MCMAHON

UAMGRANEY born Edna O'Brien has been awarded the highest cultural honour in France.

On Sunday, she was named Commander in the French "Ordre des Arts et Lettres" by Mrs Roselyne Bachelot, French Minister of Culture, during an online ceremony.

Awarded annually by the French Minister of Culture to leading lights in the arts and literature, the Order of Arts and Letters has three grades, increasing in prestige from Knight, to Officer, and to Commander.

Minister Bachelot-Narquin described the Clare woman as "a legendary writer who has enriched Irish literature in inestimable ways" who also nurtured French literature.

Up to 20 people can receive the title of Commander each year, with the 18 time novellist joining an exclusive list of Irish cultural figures who have received the accolade including Paul Hewson (Bono) and Seamus Heaney.

Edna, who celebrated her 90th birthday in December, continues to be a literary force. Her 2019 novel, Girl won

Irish Novel of the Year and was lauded for its portrayal of the trauma endured by Nigerian schoolgirls who were ambushed and captured by the Boko Haram militants.

O'Brien's most recent book, Joyce and Nora: A Portrait of a Marriage published in 2020 depicted the relationship between James Joyce and Nora Barnacle.

Over the years, she has received numerous accolades, including the Irish PEN Lifetime Achievement Award, the American National Arts Gold Medal, the Frank O'Connor Prize, the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature and the David Cohen Prize for Literature.

"Writing was a very secret transaction because it was regarded as profane, both in our house and in my country, during my formative years," Edna outlined in her acceptance speech.

She was humbled to receive the honour. "I want to convey to you the happiness and disbelief I feel on receiving this great honour. In fact, I was so surprised and confounded when I received the first letter from Minister Roselyne Bachelot and I put it aside because actually I thought a second was going to come cancelling it.

“We'll put that down by my Catholic upbringing.

Anyhow, I found the letter and replied and here I am".

Her career has spanned six decades and she is celebrated for The Country Girls trilogy, her role as a committed feminist and also one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.

'Public representation was a privilege' - Madeline Taylor-Quinn reflects on political life in new book

CLARE'S first female TD features in a new publication chronicling the contribution of women to politics Cumann na nGaedhael and Fine Gael.

Elected to Dáil Éireann in 1981, Madeline Taylor Quinn describes her 30 years as a public representative as a privilege, two years previous she stood successfully for Clare County Council. A chapter is dedicated to the Kilrush woman in 'Proud to Serve: The Voices of the Women of Cumann na nGaedheal and Fine Gael 1922-1992' which is written by Martina Murray and

Maria Hegarty.

During her teenage years, Madeline made speeches in churches across the county when her father Frank ran for election in 1969. She set up branches of Young Fine Gael in Kilrush and UCG while she was the first individual outside the parliamentary party to hold the post of honorary secretary.

She recalled, "I had this wonderful, naïve view that if you got actively involved in the political system you could actually forge change in society. In my latter teenage years, I was particularly concerned about the poverty I saw around parts of rural Clare.

I thought the treatment of women who got pregnant outside marriage was wrong, and the way children born outside wedlock were treated was appalling.

People claimed to have all these great Christian principles, but they were applying none of them to children".

After losing her Dáil a seat in February 1982, she sat on the Seanad until returning to the Dáil in November of that year. In the book, she revealed that rumours of drink-driving and getting an abortion in England were circulated to upend her chances in a "character assassination". Taylor-Quinn continued as a TD until

1992, serving on the front bench as Fine Gael's spokesperson on Marine, Defence and European Security for six years alongside Clarecastle's Donal Carey. She returned to the Seanad from 1992 until 2002 where she was Deputy Leader.

MTQ is credited with saving Fine Gael from losing their representation to Sinn Féin in the Ireland North-West Constituency during her run for European office. She polled 43,400 votes and helped to elect Jim Higgins (FG). She retired from Clare County Council in 2009, prior to this she became the party's first Mayor of the local authority.

BREAD AND BUTTER PUD

I

HAPPENED to be passing through Quin recently and I wandered into the wonderful Taylor and Blue for a coffee (double espresso if you’re ever meet me out and about and your feeling generous). While I was in there I spotted lovely litre bottles of fresh milk from the Quin Creamery.

Now I’m not a man to pass up quality produce, so I quickly snapped up a couple of bottles before I resumed my journey.

The milk was lovely and creamy so I thought it would be nice to use some in a dessert, and as it was a particularly cold day I decided to make my Chocolate Chip Bread and Butter Pudding.

YOU WILL NEED: • A loaf of crusty bread • Enough butter to do the bread and grease your cooking tin.

• 100g chocolate chips (or more, more is good) • 100g caster sugar • 3 whole eggs • 1 egg yolk • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence (optional)

Step 2 Horse your milk, eggs, egg yolk, vanilla and sugar into a bowl and mix it all together Step 3 Pour your wet mix over your bread and butter and leave it stand for a few minutes. Make sure to wet all the bread Step 4 Fire your dish into a preheated oven @180 degrees Celsius for approx 35 to 40 minutes Step 5 Take it out of the oven when cooked and leave it to cool for a while. Serve while still warm, with custard or cream or even ice cream The above quantities are based on a

medium sized oven dish and you may be using a bigger loaf of bread than I did, but if you feel your dish might not have enough liquid in it, just make half the milk egg and sugar mix again and pour it in.

This is a great dish for a cold day and is also a great way to use up old bread.

There are lots of wonderful bakeries in the county as well with really cool breads for sale so you can go nuts experimenting with the recipe as well.

With International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day taking place this week, Joe Melody pays tribute to the contribution of women in the farming world

W

OMEN in Agriculture has become a more highlighted area in recent years whether it be in the media, at conferences or on social media.

I know in my own family alone my mother Ann is the driving force behind what we do whether it be in administration or just keeping an impetus behind the next project or job that needs completion. This is not just a modern development, the woman always tended to occupy the most important tasks on farm.

Historically the key role of milking the cows and feeding the calves was more often than not carried out by the women in the household as these were skilled jobs requiring a patience, gentleness and attention to detail.

This gave way to milking machines from the 1960s on. In a time where many women would have lacked their own financial independence, many of these farming women had their

own poultry from which they sold eggs, turkeys, geese etc. This was very much bucking the trend of old Ireland.

Much of these roles on farm gave way to administrative work. These women embodied and continue to embody female empowerment in a stoic way through their actions not by some empty soundbytes. They did all of this while running a household. Wonderful women and farming has continued to be blessed to this day with these capable women who get on with it.

74,000 women actively contributed to work on farms according to the last census and women indeed are occupying the highest positions as the CEO’s of Bord Bia and Glanbia as well as a multitude of other Irish food companies. There are many farms now being succeeded by a daughter in the family rather than the traditional eldest son. Agriculture is a meritocracy, if a person has the ability to progress gender should not come into the reckoning.

On the home front, although the peak of calving has eased off, the schedule is still hectic. Most of our new arrivals now are out of Hereford or Aberdeen Angus bulls. In previous years we would have bred most the herd to a dairy sire but now were becoming more selective and only the cows that have both the genetic merit and performance get to breed a dairy replacement.

Any of the farm that didn’t get slurry in the past six weeks has received 25 units of nitrogen in the form of Urea. All our later calving cows are now out grazing on the out farm.

We have 55% of the dairy platform grazed. I find that getting a good percentage of the farm grazed early in the first rotation is key to having enough grass for the start of the second grazing round in early April. The dry weather of the past fortnight has made grazing a much more successful endeavour as the cows are swallowing most of the grass rather than trampling it.

‘Now is the time to shout stop’

RITING a column on politics on International Women’s Day, it would be remiss of me not to note the improved representation of women in Clare politics over the past 12 months. At this stage last year, Deputy Wynne had made history in taking Provisional Sinn Féin’s first ever seat in the county, becoming the 3rd ever woman to be elected a Clare TD. Over the course of the following months, Róisín Garvey of the Greens became a Senator, with her Council seat being co-opted by Susan Crawford. Add to that, the earlier co-option of Donna McGettigan of Sinn Féin after the untimely death of the widely respected Mike McKee, and the number of women in public office from the county is looking far healthier than ever.

One TD, one Senator and five County Councillors is a much better ratio than we were in at the beginning of 2020, but it is still just a drop in the ocean when you consider that there are 28 Clare Councillors, 4 TDs and 3 Senators, presently.

7 out of 35 is still only 20% of the total, despite women making up 51% of the population.

At a recent Women for Election event, the barriers to getting more women involved in politics were again discussed, however, this time the traditional 5 “Cs” were joined by an emerging sixth.

The five had traditionally been childcare, cost, confidence, culture and candidate selection. The sixth is an ever more sinister one though: cyberspace.

More and more people of all walks of life have been highlighting the litany of abuse they receive online, and few more experience this as regularly as politicians.

Within the world of

politics, women are far more likely again to be on the receiving end, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a torrent of abuse aimed at men involved in politics, or political commentary either. I myself, have been on the receiving end on many an occasion for daring to have an opinion that the latest online mob disagrees with.

Ironically, it’s those who would label themselves as ‘progressives’ that are often just as guilty in trying to shout down free speech as those from the more conservative end of the spectrum. It’s clear to me that the liberal centre ground has been squeezed almost out of existence when it comes to online political discussion.

Herein lays the problem.

Whereas in days gone by, the first reaction was to shirk off online comments as harmless idle chatter, peddled by losers from the safety of behind the laptops and anonymous accounts.

Nowadays though, those online threats are transferring more and more to the real world. In a society in which it is already more dangerous to be a woman, fewer and fewer women will willingly put themselves in the public eye if these attacks, both online and in the real world, are not stopped sooner rather than later. One need not ever peer off these shores for examples of these attacked. SF’s Martin Kenny had his car burnt out by right wing trolls immediately after he came under online attack for his support of asylum seekers.

We’ve seen the family home of various TDs like Simon Harris and Simon Donnelly targeted by cowards also in recent times.

Only last week, we were discussing the violence at the Dublin anti-lockdown protest and the disgraceful attack on our Gardaí at the same event.

These scenes were a direct manifestation of the spurious bile spread online by those seeking to manipulate people for their own agenda. Now is the time to shout stop, not after someone’s life is cut short, as the UK suffered in 2016 with the murder of MP Jo Cox ahead of the Brexit vote.

We do have a principle of allowing free speech in this country, but that does not mean absolute freedom from consequences of what one chooses to say.

The age of allowing unfettered, anonymous abuse online simply must end. Big tech firms should be mandated by law to verify each account to an individual, even if that account will then, forevermore, present itself online as anonymous.

The social media firms making billions hosting this hate speech need to be made somewhat responsible for what it hosts.

If they cannot moderate it, they should at least be able to know who is on their platform so that individuals can be held to account for criminal behaviour.

If we are going to stop the ongoing polarisation of society, and with it, the general breakdown of healthy, constructive political debate that benefits all, we need to get a control on the extremist who are driving this agenda.

Otherwise, they get what they want, and elected politics will be a mirror of them and not representative of society. If we are to have gender parity in politics, this is the most critical ‘C’ that needs tackling in my opinion.

HIS Sunday is Mother's Day and is an extraordinary day for all of us to honour our mothers who have blessed us with the gift of life and have supported us in so many ways, oftentimes unacknowledged.

It is a day to honor them for who they are, to praise them for their many great qualities and to express appreciation for all that they do.

Even though we have the fear and worry of the Coronavirus for another Mother's Day all around us, it's a time to give our love to the most precious creation of God our Mother!

Backbone of Our Society

In reflecting on Mothers Day, we acknowledge and celebrate mothers and mothering. I make that distinction because I know that many people – sisters, aunts, step parents, guardians and close family friends, fulfill the chief mothering role in families. We think about how children and mothers who have been forcibly separated through government policy, war, or natural disaster are feeling. We think about how women and children affected by domestic violence are feeling. But hopefully we do more than think.

We pray, we speak out and up for mothers and women everywhere.

We are inspired by no less than Our Blessed Mother Mary. In the Magnificat, Mary imagines a world that reflects the face of God's love and compassion, where all are fed and every hurt is removed, and where a strong light is thrown on the face of human degradation and suffering.

This is a different image of Our Blessed Mother Mary from the often romanticised view of her as forever patient and suffering. It is a cry for justice. Mothers are the backbone of our society and the glue that holds a family together and their work is vital but often unseen. We all need to show greater appreciation for them. Mothers should be proud to be mothers. It is a God-given task and privilege.

Actually there is a mother's heart in every woman, whether married or single. A true mother thinks day and night about the well-being of her children, and is the first to praise, comfort and protect them.

She is willing to sacrifice her life for them and she continues to carry the child in her heart her whole life.

Motherhood is a mystery. It is something truly divine for which every human heart longs. This is

why mothers provide the most powerful influence on a child's life, and are the most important role models for positive change in our society. When anyone is in trouble, or knows that they are dying, the first person they think of is their mother.

When children start going wrong ways a mother's prayer is powerful. Mothers remind us that there is a loving God above us who will take good care of everyone. Whenever a tragedy occurs no matter where in the world this happens, you will always find mothers both weeping for the dead and bringing comfort and security to the living. They often struggle under the most difficult circumstances. They are the real heroes of the family and not just on Mother's Day but all year through.

As a final thought, even if we have great worries all around us at present make your Mother feel the most special woman in the world by showing your care, love and affection, especially during these our most worrying times. Most of all let your Mother know how much you love her not just for Mothers Day but for all time. Spend as much time as you can loving and caring for the people who truly love you. Enjoy each moment with them before it's too late. There is nothing more important than family, especially during this time of uncertainty and anxiety!!! Make your mother and the mother of your children feel the most special woman in the world by showing your care, love and affection. Most of all let your mother know how much you love her, for life is short and time is running out.

Most all of us have been blessed by a mother or someone like a mother in our lives. Mother's Day is a time to pause, remember, give thanks to God, and share our gratitude with those who have shaped us. And, let them know you love them and thank God for them. A very Happy Mother's Day to all our Mother's both living here on earth and those who, like Jesus, have been lifted up from the earth, forever to be with us in our hearts.

For all of them mothers by blood, mothers by heart a special blessing on this Mother's Day, Blessing our Mothers, who are our first sanctuary. Who fashion a space of blessing with their own being: with the belly, the bone and the blood or, if not with these, then with the durable heart that offers itself to break and grow wide, to gather itself around another as refuge, as home.

Who lean into the wonder and terror of loving what they can hold but cannot contain. Who remain in some part of themselves always awake, a corner of consciousness keeping perpetual vigil. Who know that the story is what endures, is what binds us, is what runs deeper even than blood and so they spin them in celebration of what abides and benediction on what remains: a simple gladness that latches onto us and graces us on our way.

Loving God, we thank you for the love of the mothers you have given us whose love is so precious it can never be measured, whose patience seems to have no end.

May we see your loving hand behind them and guiding them. We pray for those mothers who fear they will run out of love or time or patience. We ask you to bless them with your own special love. In this time of pandemic, our prayers today also encompass mothers both here and around the world who have woken to a very different Mother's Day. We remember mothers and grandmothers who have the virus or are sick in any way and for their worried families.

We remember mothers and grandmothers isolated today and unable to celebrate with their children and for their families who miss them.

We remember mothers struggling to feed their children and keep them safe, especially those in refugee camps and poorer areas of our world. We remember mothers or children estranged from each other and not knowing how to heal the hurt.

We remember mothers with newly born children who do not have the support of family and friends at this time. We remember women who long for motherhood but are unable to bear children.

We remember mothers grieving the loss of children. We remember mothers trapped in abusive situations struggling to keep the peace and shield their children from harm. We remember mothers stretched and stressed, fatigued and fraught but still smiling and giving, tending and loving. For all these Mothers and more today, we bow to you, we celebrate you, we love you, we thank you and we pray for you. We ask this in the name of Jesus and Our Blessed Mother Mary.

Our mothers, parents & grandparents always minded us and minded us so well during our life's journey so far. Now it's our time to stand up, to MIND THEM. Wash your hands, be hygienic and practice social distancing.

Keep well and keep safe and look out for one another, especially our elderly and those with underlying health conditions and keep helping and supporting our wonderful nurses, doctors, gardai, emergency workers, first responders, defence forces, volunteers and front line staff during these worrying times.

Lough Derg tourism project funding approved PÁRAIC MCMAHON

URTHER project funding has been approved towards the development of viewing and discovery points around Lough Derg.

Allocated via LEADER programme funding, it is the second occasion whereby Clare Local Development Company, in partnership with Galway Rural Development and North Tipperary Development Company have worked in collaboration on a project around Lough Derg.

Support for the tourism sector cannot afford to be in short supply, Doirin Graham, CEO of Clare Local Development stated. "The tourism sector has been one of those worst hit by the pandemic due to the collapse of inbound travel and the restrictions on internal movement. It’s all the more important we support it to bounce back quickly".

CEO at NTDC, Michael Murray detailed, "More than a million euros has been granted by our three development companies toward ‘Rural

Tourism’ projects in the past year or two and we will continue to support groups, and indeed companies, right across the Lough Deg region in the years ahead".

Staycations are likely to stand in Lough Derg’s favour, Steve Dolan, CEO of GRD felt.

"The Lough Derg region has a wide range of natural assets and, as I know first-hand, terrific people. Staycations will be taken by the majority of the population in the coming year and we warmly support improvements to the visitor experience in Lough Derg.”

In addition to allocations given to sporting clubs and community groups, in recent months there has been a focus on the LEADER food initiative whereby producers can avail of funding for a range of project types.

Emergency works needed for Cappa Pier

by PÁRAIC McMAHON AN APPLICATION for coastal protection funding to the Office of Public Works (OPW) will be made to carry out a structural survey at Cappa Pier, the coast road sea wall and the cliff edge at Aylevaroo.

It comes following a request from Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) before the March meeting of the West Clare Municipal District.

"The area has suffered severe damage over the last number of years and is in need of emergency works to prevent further extensive and costly damage," he stated.

ly since storms in 2014" were carried out to large sections of the coastal wall at Cappagh," senior executive engineer Alan Kennelly noted.

Quay stones were removed in 2014, Cllr Lynch recalled and he flagged that two large stones were also gone from the back of the pier. He voiced his concern with the section at Aylevarroo, "there is less than 500m left, I would be worried of what would happen if there was a storm".

He suggested doing the survey locally before contacting the OPW. His proposal was seconded by Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF).

HE World Health Organisation (WHO) outlines that air pollution is steadily becoming the world’s “biggest environmental health risk.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 1,300 premature deaths occur due to poor air quality in Ireland every year. This fits into an annual figure of 400,000 premature deaths in Europe.

Better Ennis co-founder Síle Ginnane has expressed that the town of Ennis has had a longstanding problem with polluted air. She points to a number of pitfalls in measuring the town’s air quality and the discrepancy between what the WHO says is safe and what the EU deems acceptable. There is an air quality monitoring station located in the grounds of Ennis Town Council at Drumbiggle and the results of this are published on the EPA air quality monitoring site, she stated.

This monitor tracks the amount of fine airborne suspended particulate matter in the air we are breathing in. Spikes in the amount of PM2.5 and PM10 in the air are noticeable. “The 2.5 and 10 references the size of those particulates, the smaller 2.5 being more dangerous as it can be inhaled far more easily into the lungs and impact on our entire body. During the winter we regularly see spikes of dangerous levels of particulate matter in the air we are breathing in,” she added.

Síle explained that EU limits are calculat-

ed by averaging out readings over the course of a year. This means the ‘bad’ highly polluted winter readings produced by solid fuels are balanced out by ‘lower’ less polluted summer readings. She also outlined that EU limits are far higher than WHO limits.

She stated: “Significant studies have been carried out in Ireland and internationally, finding the connection between polluted air with a wide range of conditions - stroke, Alzheimer’s, dementia, lung cancer and exacerbation of respiratory conditions such as COPD and asthma.”

She also said that It is worth pointing out that in Ennis, the amount of polluted air coming from the second major cause of air pollution - traffic emissions is not being tracked. Although PM 2.5 is also caused by traffic emissions, it is unlikely that this is being picked up by the air monitor in Drumbiggle because the monitor is sited “well in off the road in the leafy grounds of Ennis Town Council.” The monitor also fails to address NO2, another pollutant which is emitted from traffic and is particularly dangerous to our health. Síle stressed that there are no traffic emissions monitoring stations in any Clare streets. These are areas we should be concerned about, “particularly at school gates and outside shops where drivers are leaving engines idling.”

“At some stage, we need to take preventative health seriously. We need to make as much effort in preserving good health as we do in our investment in restoring people to good health. Clean air is essential for good health. Polluted air from solid fuel burning impacts the health of people both inside the house, as well as the community outside it, just as polluted air from traffic emissions impact people and children inside a car, as it

does outside the car,” she stated.

Better Ennis is aware of people who, while out walking and cycling for exercise have returned home due to the level of polluted air in the town. Síle expressed that this is unacceptable, particularly during a public health emergency where WHO are advising people to ensure they keep active, for their physical and mental wellbeing. “As we hope to attract people to live and set up business in Ennis, we need to realise that quality of life will be a significant draw, and a very basic requirement of quality of life and healthy living is clean air.”

She outlined that Better Ennis lauds the upcoming national ban on smoky coal and recommends that wet wood should also

be included due to its negative impact on health inside and outside the house. A series of virtual Town Halls has been organised so that people can ask questions and become more informed about solid fuels, air quality and health.

“It is important that people in Ennis do take the time to get involved in this public consultation, and we would especially like to see healthcare professionals make their voices heard. The impacts of polluted air on people’s health whether an asthmatic child, a parent battling lung cancer, an older person suffering from dementia, the links between polluted air and all of these conditions are too significant to continue to ignore,” she concluded.

This event is in aid of three great charities The Irish Cancer Society, Limerick Suicide Watch and the Mater Hospital. The Mater Hospital is an organization aimed at supporting our frontline workers. This event is in memory of Jacinta O'Brien, a former lecturer in Sports and Exercise Psychology.

Jacinta sadly passed in 2004 due to Sudden Adult Death syndrome. Jacinta was also an avid spokesperson for participation of girls and women in physical activity.

Jacko White and Aaron Fitzgerald of the newly established Prestige Brickwork & Garden Design explained to The Clare Echo that customers have become more creative with their garden projects of late as they have spent more time at home.

Jacko (34), who has 17 years’ experience in blocklaying and garden design, and Éire Óg and now county hurler Aaron (29), also a qualified block layer, officially set up the company last month. “I had Jacko White Constructions before that, it was operating in garden design and building houses. Myself and Aaron joined up because we both wanted to specialise in garden designs.”

Aaron adds that completing garden projects has been highly rewarding in terms of seeing their visions and garden designs coming to fruition.

Watch your flowers grow Top 10 things to remember when caring for your flowers

Make sure they have enough light What’s the sunniest spot in the garden?

Give it to your flowers and they will love you for it.

Make sure they have enough water, but not too much A water logged plant is not a happy plant, especially if they are traditionally grown in dry conditions.

Keep an eye on the pot size. As a plant grows, it will need a bigger space for its roots. So check them every so often and switch up the pot if necessary.

As well as pot size, the type of pot you choose is very important.

Make sure the pot has a hole in the bottom for proper drainage and that it is sturdy enough not to crack easily.

Check for pests The last thing you want is your flowers eaten by bugs after putting so much effort into growing them. But be mindful of the type of insecticide you use.

Deadhead your flowers Removing the dead heads and foliage on your plants will help them to grow and live longer.

Consider using some fertilizer If the plants don’t have the right nutrients, they won’t grow. So check out the right fertilizer for your plant babies.

Don’t crowd your flowers. Although it may look really pretty to have the pot overflowing with blossoms, it will ultimately strangle your plants.

Weed often Again, unwelcome invaders will take over the pot if you don’t keep an eye on them. And make sure you pull them out by the roots.

Mind the Irish weather Unfortunately we are not lucky to live in the tropics. So if the dodgy Irish weather looks like it’s going to get rough, bring your pots inside to protect them from the elements.

aming a lawn full of weeds might feel daunting, but it’s all about keeping your turf as healthy as can be.

If weeds are starting to overturn your turf, here are four steps to stop them in their

CAN I GET RID OF WEEDS IN A LAWN NATURALLY? Yes! But it may take more time and effort. Spraying vinegar directly on weeds is a natural way to get rid of them. It dries out the plant leaves and kills what’s above the ground.

Also, pick vinegar that contains more than the standard 5 percent acetic acid. Head to a home improvement store instead of the supermarket to find vinegar with 10 to 20 percent acetic acid.

If you spray that, you can kill 80 to 100 percent of weeds’ top growth, found USDA research.

Finally, if you are unsure about something, just bite the bullet and ask. There are so many green fingered gardening experts throughout Co Clare, you are sure to find all the help you need.

N ONLINE advertising campaign ran by Clare Local Enterprise Office in association with The Clare Echo has been hailed as a major success.

Click for Clare led to the creation of an online business directory sharing the details of over one hundred businesses in the county and promoting shopping locally in the run-up to Christmas.

Website users were connected with businesses operating shopping websites in Clare during COVID-19 restrictions.

The campaign ran during the months of November, December and early January to maximise local spend for the Christmas period.

Speaking at a meeting of the Economic Development SPC, Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Clare, Padraic McElwee admitted that Click for Clare "surpassed our expectations" as it resulted in "a very significant increase in people buying local".

He stated that the visibility of online profiles of the businesses witnessed during the campaign wouldn't be seen in a normal

year. "We are hopeful that it flowed through to businesses and kept them going".

Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) queried if Click for Clare would be extended. "It was pretty successful, we need to bolster spending locally," he remarked.

McElwee confirmed that Clare LEO intend for Click for Clare to continue. "It is our intention to revisit that". A decision is expected to be made when further information on a roadmap for reopening businesses becomes known.

AerCap acquisition of Gecas leaves uncertainty for operations in Shannon

by PÁRAIC McMAHON AERCAP is to buy its rival Gecas in a €25bn deal that will create the largest aircraft lessor in the world.

Headquartered in Dublin, AerCap confirmed the reports that it was making the acquisition on Wednesday.

The two companies are currently the world's biggest aircraft lessors.

Subsequently, the combined group will have a fleet of about 2,000 owned and managed aircraft. It will also have more than 900 owned and managed jet engines, more than 300 owned helicopters and about 300 customers around the world.

Gecas has significant operations in Shannon and it is unclear as of yet if this deal will pose job concerns for their staff in Co Clare who may be impacted by the merger. Staff are expected to be briefed on the impact of the merger to their employment in the coming days.

Prior to COVID-19, Gecas had more than 575 employees and 26 offices worldwide, with the larger of the company's two global headquarters located in Shannon.

Under the terms of the agreement, which has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of AerCap and GE, GE will receive 111.5m newly issued AerCap shares, $24bn (€20.1bn) of cash and $1bn of AerCap notes and/or cash. Upon completion of the transaction, GE is expected to own approximately 46pc of the combined company and will be entitled to nominate two directors to the AerCap board of directors.

Neither AerCap nor GECAS had more than 65% of its aircraft active as of February. To further complicate the situation, Ascend by Cirium analysis pointed out that the aviation industry will see a significant feet surplus through late-2022 at best, minimizing opportunities for lessors to remarket their aircraft.

Ineligibility for support schemes leaves some small businesses suffering in silence

SMALL businesses are suffering in silence as they are unable to qualify for pandemic support schemes, a West Clare businesswoman has stated.

Marie Keane closed the doors of her training and consultancy business on March 30th and has been unable to avail of any supports or grants since.

In the space of a year, Marie discovered that her business does not qualify for the COVID Restrictions Support Scheme (CRSS) funding as they are not classified as an essential service. Successful businesses can receive a cash payment of up to €5,000 per week from Revenue.

Adding to this, a circular released by government outlines that offices like Marie's are exempt from the Rates Rebate scheme, which assists small businesses in offsetting commercial costs.

"Where do small businesses go to get funding in this environment? We are still paying for insurance, phone, light and heat. The Government is not helping. Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) is for individuals. The banks are not lending any money either," she stated.

She outlined that the current structure is not good for businesses getting back on their feet. Marie is looking for funding to digitize her business. A mix of in-house expertise culminated with external expertise is required to undertake the shift in business model.

Limitations on safe passes and the cancellations of tutoring and courses booked have impeded the transition. "We are caught at every angle be-

cause we are not an essential service selling masks," she conceded.

Upskilling has been another contentious area financially, she outlined. To retrain, business owners must take a Level 8 and study full time, go onto jobseekers and lose their PUP. "A married person with children and a mortgage won't be able to do that," she stressed.

Marie also stated that many courses aren't fully certified.

Many people are also unable to take the ETB Board up on apprenticeships as they won't receive any payment. One Wicklow training company told Marie that they weren't taking on anyone receiving PUP as it took over a year to receive payments from Social Welfare for the courses that were given.

She highlighted that it took between November 2020 and January 2021 to find out that her business would not quality for the CRSS scheme. On top of this, it took a period of four months for a loan application to come through from the bank to go towards growth.

Last year, the State pushed through legislation that guaranteed up to 80 per cent of low-cost loans for small businesses affected by the pandemic.

"The government are not telling the truth or helping.

There are many businesses in the same boat. We are all suffering and not just the restaurants. The government are not equipped nor dealing with reality. Small businesses can't survive in this environment.

There is no training available to them and companies don't have the money to pay for them," she stated.

OCAL Enterprise Office Clare have announced that winning teenager entrepreneurs from St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Spanish Point and Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon have won the County Final of the Student Enterprise Programme which took place virtually on March 3rd. This final was one the many events taking place for Enterprise Week. The winning teams will represent Clare at this year’s Student Enterprise Programme National Finals. Given the current restrictions the Final will take place virtually on May 14th.

8 secondary schools in Clare took part in this year’s Programme. The enterprise education initiative, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, saw over 25,000 students from over 500 secondary schools across the country take part last year.

In the Junior Category, the students representing Co. Clare at the National Finals are Sadie O’Brien and Niamh Lavender-Duncan of ‘The Art Company’ at Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon.

In the Intermediate Category, Mae Kivlehan of ‘Tried n Tested’ from Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon will be representing the county.

In the Senior Category of the competition, Co. Clare will be represented on May 14th by Aoibhnait O’Dea and Roisin Montgomery from ‘Portable Pouches’ at St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Spanish Point..

Special guests at the virtual County Final included an Cathaoirleach, Clare County Council, Mary Howard who was very impressed by the standard, positivity and resilience of the students in what has been a very challenging year. She congratulated this year’s winners adding that the Programme “is a practical and fun way of encouraging young people to consider establishing their own business ideas in years to come.”

Other special guests at the event included Marty Morrissey, Sharon Shannon, Anthony Daly and many more.

Hosting the county final, Padraic McElwee of Local Enterprise Office Clare congratulated the students, saying “Our national finalists are excellent ambassadors for the programme and we wish them the very best of luck on May 14th. What our students are learning from the programme is that with the right supports and encouragement, they can take an idea from the classroom and develop it into a real-life business. First virtual Local Enterprise Week a “success” for Clare

VER 455 budding entrepreneurs and business owners in Clare have taken part in online events this week, marking Local Enterprise Week (March 1st – 5th), which has been hailed as a “success”

by Local Enterprise Office Clare.

An annual initiative from the 31 Local Enterprise Offices around the country, including Local Enterprise Office Clare, more than 270 events took place online under the theme of ‘Making It Happen’ attracting over 10,700 bookings nationally.

Supported by Clare County Council and Enterprise Ireland, Local Enterprise Office Clare hosted eight events for local businesses this week, in addition to ten Spotlight events which were open to businesses across

the country.

Speaking on the last day of Local Enterprise Week, Padraic McElwee, Head of Enterprise with Local Enterprise Office Clare, said: “We moved all of our events for Local Enterprise Week online for the first time, making them as accessible as possible for local businesses. It’s been a very successful week as we had many start-ups and businesses from the county learning about areas like the green economy, becoming more competitive and leaner, exploring new opportunities online as well as finding out what supports could benefit their business in 2021.”

He said: “I’d like to thank all the companies that joined us online this week and all the speakers and contributors that shared

their experiences, challenges and insights at every event. I’d also like to give a special word of thanks to our team here in Local Enterprise Office Clare for rolling out such an impressive programme of events.

Highlights from the week included Managing Your Online Business Regional Event, S.M.A.R. Tech for Start Ups Spotlight Event , Student Enterprise Programme Finals and Digi Eco for the Green Economy Information Event.

An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar T.D. officially opened the first Spotlight event for Local Enterprise Week and launched the new Green for Micro Programme on Monday (March 1st), which helps small businesses decarbonise and become more sustainable.

The Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy T.D. spoke at another Spotlight event on the opening day, which focused on developing leadership and resilience.

At the final Spotlight event for Local Enterprise Week on Friday (March 5th), the Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail, Damien English T.D. focused on how small businesses could gain a digital advantage through the Trading Online Voucher Scheme.

HE Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) of Clare and Limerick today announced the six companies that will receive up to €25,000 funding vouchers to help them develop next generation solutions, based on Industry 4.0 and Smart Technology principles.

Managed by the LEOs of Clare and Limerick, the Tech Disrupt 4.0 Pilot Project was devised to enable and encourage the development of Industry 4.0 solutions in Ireland’s Mid-West region. Solutions aligned to Industry 4.0 include, but are not limited to, Big Data, 3D Printing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, IoT, MedTech, FinTech, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Robotics and Automation.

The project was highly successful with over 30 initial applications and expressions of interest received. After a series of webinars hosted by Jonathan Healy and private 1:1 ‘Meet the Expert’ sessions with industry leaders from Dell, Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing, IMR, Future Mobility Cam-

pus Ireland, ITAG, the initial applications were narrowed down to 20, from which the final six were chosen after a live pitch demonstration.

The winning solutions from businesses based in Clare and Limerick were wide and varied, ranging from Industrial IoT Applications, Autonomous Robotics, FinTech, Smart Manufacturing, Sports Performance Analysis and Smart Recruitment.

According to Padraic McElwee, Head of Enterprise, Local Enterprise Office Clare, “The Tech Disrupt 4.0 Pilot Project was devised to encourage and support next generation smart technology development in Limerick and Clare. We were overwhelmed by the response and quality of applications received and I would like to wish the winning applicants the very best of success in further developing their solutions.”

ODGE Collins has confirmed he will be concentrating solely on gaelic football with the county this year.

In October, Podge departed Brian Lohan’s Clare senior hurling panel prior to the start of the 2020 inter-county championship.

THREE Clare clubs are pursuing facility upgrades ahead of the long-anticipated await of the return of competitive GAA to the county this year.

Clonlara, The Banner and St Josephs Doora/ Barefield GAA clubs have all submitted planning files and are working hard behind the scenes to provide a better platform for future player development.

Banner GAA Public Relations Officer (PRO) Liam O’ Reilly stated that an application submitted for an extension to the existing hurling wall and the construction of a new gym facility came from a club rebirth eight or nine years ago and with that arrived a “huge influx of underage talent within the club.”

Having secured promotion to the Junior A hurling championship and with a steady growth in underage teams and

a focus on strength and conditioning, a good gym facility is warmly welcomed, he added.

Banner GAA are working on several grant applications, including a Sports Capital Grant.

Subject to successful planning and funding, Liam believes that the new wall, and detached club gym could be operational by the end of the year. In the meantime, online programmes have been put in place for underage teams through Zoom since January.

These include ball wall work and strength and conditioning. “We had to get everyone going.

It’s very frustrating but everyone is in the same boat. We are waiting on indication of when we can return for some sort of non-contact training,” he stated.

St Josephs Doora/Barefield have submitted a planning application to extend the existing astro turf pitches at Gurteen to include an additional 40m x 25m pitch, metal posts, perimeter fencing, two additional light

poles and all ancillary site works. Club Chairman Robert Hurley stated that this stemmed from max capacity being reached last year.

He added: “We have a lot of members at underage level and an extra ground is needed for teams to train on.

Last year there was a lot of pressure put on the pitches due to the tight schedule. This extra 25m will really help us out.

Depending on planning and funding, this will take about six weeks to construct.”

Since the development of a lower pitch, Clonlara GAA have recognised the need for public toilets, dressing rooms, a garden machinery shed for equipment and a referee’s room. Chairman John Murphy has made this his No1 priority and hopes to rectify this situation as soon as planning permission is granted.

“We’re blessed in Clonlara to have top tradesmen within our club who are raring to get going on this project,” he stated.

Collins was one of Cratloe’s standout players in last year’s club championship with the two time Clare SFC winner to the fore in guiding the club to the decider where they came up short against Kilmurry Ibrickane 1-12 0-12.

Glynn added to Clare GAA review committee

AGREEMENT has been reached on the makeup of the individuals that will conduct a review of Clare GAA operations and compile a five year strategic plan.

Following the February meeting of the Clare County Board when Éire Óg’s proposal to conduct a strategic review of Clare GAA and the development of a five year strategic plan was passed, clubs were invited to submitted recommendations of the individuals to sit on this committee.

Ongoing controversy with Davy stockbrokers

has led to the exit of Tony Garry from the committee. The ex CEO of the firm was seen as a major coup. He informed both Clare GAA and Éire Óg of his decision to step away in recent days as attention escalates on Davy after they were issued with a €4.1bn fine from the Central Bank of Ireland. Éire Óg had already enlisted Mark O’Connell the founder and CEO of Repucon Consulting, former St Josephs Doora/Barefield hurler and current CEO of Titan Experience Eoin Conroy, founder and CEO of Gyrogy Colin Kelly, Managing Director of DFP Group Eoin Doohan, CEO of Roadbridge Conor Gilligan and Enda Connolly Managing Director of CMP to form the committee.

A meeting on Saturday morning between Clare GAA and Éire Óg agreed on the addition of Clare GAA Vice Chairman Kieran Keating and Business Manager to the Managing Director of Homes in AIB, Roisin Glynn.

A native of Kilrush, Roisin was previously the Head of Social Media at AIB, in this role she transformed how the financial sector uses social media and digital communications to best serve their customers. She scooped numerous awards while in this role.

Niall O’Connor who drafted the proposal by the Éire Óg club labelled the additions of Glynn and Keating as “a real positive step for our county”.

Clubs will ratify the personnel recommended at the March meeting of the County Board.

With a panel including the Galvin brothers Colm and Ian, Cathal O’Connell, Oisin O’Brien, Aidan Moriarty, Dylan McMahon, David Fitzgerald and a fully fit John Conlon, the South-East Clare club will be intent on reaching their potential this year.

Horgan’s predecessor Dave Cuddy has been appointed manager of Laois club Camross. The owner of Cuddy QS will be the fifth manager in as many years of Camross who have won three titles in the past eight seasons. Based in Limerick, Cuddy has been in charge of Ahane and the Limerick U17 hurlers before spending two years with Clonlara.

Six components behind teaching of a skill

icheál Duffy, Clare GAA GDM explains the six components underlying the teaching of any skill in sport.

GAA coaching courses has a model of how you can teach any skill and it is made up of six components. Build rapport, observe, analyse, provide demonstration, explain, and generate feedback. When trying to teach anybody anything the first step is to build rapport which basically means to make a connection with the individual.

I remember watching a Ted Talk on YouTube of a teacher explaining how children learn and how they do not and one of the lines in the talk was “children don’t learn from people they don’t like”. Our first job as coaches is to build trust

Wimbledon is a great example of this if you watched the crowd, you would see the spectator’s head turning over and back following the ball where it is the movements of the player’s body is what the coach is observing. Once you

have observed you then must analyse before you speak.

You compare what you saw to what you think you would like to see and then think about how to explain this to your players.

Providing demonstrations to players is also a big component as it helps players see what it is you would like them to do. For younger age groups this could be as simple as getting a child to show them performing the skill to more complex demonstrations like video analysis of games/plays for teenagers/adult players.

When explaining you want to remember KISS- Keep It Short & Simple. You need to think about what the most important message is to get across to the player and make sure they get that. Paul Kilgannon, a coach, educator and writer of two brilliant books (Carver

Coaching Framework and Be The Best You Can Be In Sport) has a phrase when coaching players; “the most important thing is to keep the most important thing the most important thing”. Know the most important message you want the player to hear and make sure you deliver that.

Finally, the last step is you want to generate feedback.

You want to involve the player so by asking them questions you find out what they know.

When giving them feedback you should remember SPAR. Feedback should be Specific, Positive, Accurate and Relevant.

When we get back to fields hopefully not too far away from now, can we challenge our ability to give each player a piece of feedback that is specific to them in our sessions.

Lahinch’s Dough Great sadness and shock over death of Beag wins debut Michael Davoren

PREPARATIONS for the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial in Limerick continue with early indications heightening anticipation for some entertaining showings.

Last weekend saw the first two trial stakes get underway at Limerick Track for the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial 525 Sweepstake which is scheduled to start on Saturday March 27th.

Based on the calibre of greyhound involved in those two races, early indications are that the 2021 main event at the Limerick Venue could eclipse previous showings.

The Stake is for 72 greyhounds at €200 entry fee,

who are whelped on or after 1st January 2019 with prize money of €80,000 (winner), €20,000 (second place), €10,000 (third place) with €5,000 each for three unplaced finalists.

Dough Beag owned by William Curtin of Lahinch made all the running to record a debut success in race three of the twelve races in Galway on Friday. In this N3 graded contest, she proved a length and a half too good for In The Form in a time of 29.52. The winner broke smartly and led by almost two lengths rounding the opening bend as In The Form and Noelles Torello tracked the leader into the back straight. Leaving the

back the advantage was still two lengths as Dough Beag stayed on well for a game success Unusually a sprint contest brought proceedings to a close and from trap in this S4 graded contest Orbsen Quest and Derra Misty were best away with Togher Blue Leah also close up approaching the opening bend. At the bend Derra Misty went on but she was tracked through by the Noel Gavin of Ballyea owned Ballyea Scrutiny on the wide outside. Off the home bend Ballyea Scrutiny gradually wore Derra Misty down to score for the Tom Flanagan of Ennistymon kennel by three parts of a length in 19.42.

Limerick set for Con & Annie Kirby Memorial LIMERICK Greyhound Stadium are busy preparing for the commencement of the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial Stake 2021, with a prize fund of over €150,000. The event which will be hosted behind closed doors and traditionally would involve thousands of greyhound racing and GAA fans, is to go ahead with a virtual support programme of events.

Ger Dollard, CEO of Greyhound Racing Ireland said, "This year it is a case of us being flexible and able to adapt to the government restrictions in place at any given time. We firstly wish to thank JP & Noreen McManus on their continued support of Limerick Greyhound Stadium and this event has quickly become one of the top events nationwide for greyhound owners and trainers alike", he continued, "While we race behind closed doors, under stringent protocols, we know how much Limerick GAA clubs look forward to the Con & Annie Kirby Juvenile and we were determined to find a solution to ensure their engagement."

So how exactly is the virtual element going to work? As per previous years each participating club will be asked to register their interest in advance and each will be assigned one of the 70 plus greyhounds that are entered in the Classic event. As the greyhound progresses in the competition, so do the nominating club. Each club is in with a chance to share in a €20,000 prize-fund (with an impressive €10,000 to the winning club).

Individuals and clubs will be asked to submit videos and pictures, of events that would have featured in the original event itinerary.

Details will be posted on the Limerick Greyhound Stadium website, as well as its Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts using #Kirby2021 hashtag. Clubs will receive more details by email next week. Limerick Greyhound Stadium will bring together a judging panel to decide on winners each week, and

a compilation video featuring the events highlights. Over the course of the five-week schedule, different activity challenges will be launched and will include: Virtual Trophy Parade; Colouring Competition; Banner Parade; Puc & Cic Fada.

This year Limerick Greyhound Stadium have also launched their Virtual Fundraising package with the Con & Annie Kirby and Limerick GAA in mind. The concept is based on "bringing the club spirit directly to the home" and is now available for any club wishing to raise funds safely. John Cregan, Chairman of Limerick GAA said, "We are delighted The Con & Annie Kirby will be hosted again in 2021 as it offers the participating clubs a unique opportunity to not only partner with Limerick Greyhound Stadium, but to potentially share in the €20,000 finalists prizefund. Our sincere thanks to JP & Noreen McManus for creating an event that engages and supports the grass-roots of our sport."

The 2021 competition will officially commence on Saturday, March 27.

THERE was disbelief and shock within the greyhound community when the recent death of Michael Davoren was announced.

From Ardrush in Ennistymon, Mikey was highly regarded in the sport. Tributes poured in from far and wide for the North Clare man who had been breeding and training greyhounds for most of his life.

Michael who raced his greyhounds under the Willbrook Prefix generally at the Galway Track had enjoyed many successes over the years.

In expressing sympathy to his Mary and the extended Davoren family, Lahinch owners Willie and Siobhan Curtin stated, “Words cannot express our shock and sadness at the passing of our great friend Mikey. Good craic and plenty devilment were always assured in Mikey’s company. His love, care, hard work and dedication to our Cloneyogan and Dough dogs will never be forgotten. We had many a great night in Galway all thanks to Mikey. He was a gifted man without doubt. Racing and dogs for us will never be the same”.

A private funeral mass took place last Wednesday at St.Columba’s Church, Clouna followed by burial in Clouna Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Mary, sons Michael and Patrick, daughters Patricia, Louise and Claire, mother Bridget, grandchildren, brother Matie, sisters Mary and Martina, extended family, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

Kickboxing champ back in action

WORLD champion kickboxer Liam Alford will be back in the ring this July.

A six time amateur champion, Liam made his debut in the professional ranks in April 2019 recording a split decision to collect the WKA 64kg world professional title from Dylan Cheema.

He’s returning to the ring this July and will lock horns with WRSA, IKF World Champion, Qasam Beg. The fight is to take place on the first weekend of July with a venue and date to be announced in the coming weeks. Already, it has

been billed as a potential kickboxing fight of the century.

Shannon’s Alford was due to fight Sam Allen of Scotland subsequent to his win over Cheema but the bout did not go ahead prior to the onset of COVID-19. From Dun na Rí, Liam is currently training in the army.

“Any fighter out there at a professional level or fighting at a world-title level has to have the mentality of wanting to fight the best. You have to take any fight that comes your way, it is the only way to prove to yourself and everyone that you are the best,” the Clare fighter said this week.

Cratloe to raffle Toyota in fundraiser CRATLOE GAA have launched an eye-catching fundraiser where a car to the value of €33,500 is the top prize.

The South Clare club has teamed up with Cummins Car Centre to give away a brand new 211 Toyota C-HR 5dr valued at €33,500.

A raffle competition ran by the club where entry is €20 gives patrons the opportunity to win the car but also to support Cratloe GAA “club development in our efforts to achieve continued success and growth within our club”.

Other prizes on offer include, a 55’’ Smart TV worth €529, a Breville Barista Max Coffee Machine retailing at €420

and Apple AirPods Pro valued at €265.

Meanwhile, Newmarket-on-Fergus GAA club are undertaking a virtual walk on St Patrick’s Day from Fr Murphy Memorial Park to Croke Park. They are asking members to walk help them clock a distance of 233km and make online donations along the way.

Funds raised by the Blues are going towards the construction of a public walkway within the club grounds that is intended to be made available to the wider community.

Liscannor ladies work as ‘one good club’ SEAMUS HAYES Liscannor ladies football club are the Clare participants in the Lidl One Good Club programme which is currently taking place in conjunction with Jigsaw and the LGFA. “We are delighted to have been selected to be involved in this fantastic campaign to promote young people’s mental health”, explained club secretary Olivia Lucas this week. The North-West Clare successfully applied for the programme when it was announced.

This mental health awareness programme got underway on March 1 and will run for ten weeks. Twenty five clubs nationwide are participating in the programme “As part of our journey through the One Good Club programme all our teams have been invited to take part in a video collage GAA style”. The first video includes

the club’s U10, U12 and U14 players. Additional videos will be put together this week.

There are a number of cash prizes on offer with an overall prize of €5,000 while there is a prize of €2,500 for the most community involvement and €2,500 for the most innovative idea.

The programme is divided into five segments, each running for two weeks over the ten weeks. ‘Connect’ is the first segment which is running for the opening two weeks. This will be followed by ‘Keep active’ in segment two, ‘take notice’ in segment three, ‘keep learning’ in segment four and ‘Give’ is the final segment over the

SEVEN GAA clubs in Clare have expressed an interest in fielding an additional adult team for 2021.

Scariff, Crusheen, St Breckans, Clondegad, Ennistymon, Lissycasey and Ogonnelloe have written to the Clare County Board seeking permission to increase their amount of adult teams for the coming year.

County secretary, Pat Fitzgerald informed the February meeting of the Board that the requests would be referred to the CCC as the matter requires mass re-grading of several players attached to the clubs. An update will be issued at the March meeting of the Board.

He also advised the meeting that Doonbeg plan to run the O’Gorman Cup again this year and that Ennistymon asked for permission to “land or lands” adjacent to their club grounds it becomes available.

Kildysart are looking to borrow €100k from Community Finance Ireland to carry out improvements to their pitch and drainage, the meeting was told.

Ex Clare U21 hurler Alphie Rodgers is included in the list of over twenty individuals put in for re-grading to allow Scariff to have a third team. Crusheen GAA are “investigating the possibility of entering a Junior C team for 2021,” Fitzgerald stated to add to their Senior A and Junior A sides.

Following St Breckans’ promotion to the Junior A football championship, they are now keen to introduce a Junior B side which includes two ex players that have returned to the parish in recent times. It will be the first time the North Clare club has submitted a third adult team.

An interest in competing in the Junior B football championship has also been voiced by Clondegad, their correspondence stated that many of the persons linked to the team are self-employed and also includes fifty one year old Flan Enright. Ennistymon GAA have also contacted the County Board looking for a green-light to add a third adult football team.

After making “the tough decision to only proceed with one adult for the foreseeable future simply due to lack of numbers” in 2018, Ogonnelloe GAA credited remote working for creating a situation where they can line out a second team. They sought thirteen players to be re-graded with special status including Paschal Sheedy.

Adding a third team was described as “critical” for Lissycasey who detailed that they have more than fifty players eligible to play at Junior A. “We do not want to lose these players regardless of ability,” their correspondence pleading for a Junior B side outlined. Speaking at the meeting, Paudie Carmody said the situation was accelerated by an amount of players that were no longer eligible for U17, “we hope to have a third team for next ten years or so”.

Clarecastle delegate Neville O’Halloran remarked, “It seems you can put in a letter and get as many as you want regraded”. Ordinarily clubs are only allowed propose five players be regraded to a lower team each year. “We have always operated on the principle of a special case to be put to the Board if an extra team is being entered,” Fitzgerald responded.

An appetite for clubs to have more teams was applauded by Munster Council delegate, Bernard Keane. "The number of clubs looking to put in extra teams is very encouraging, we should take pride in that".
