EDESTRIANISATION in Ennis is to be discussed in greater detail over the coming months as work continues on a mobility plan for the county town.

All current pedestrianisation measures in Ennis town centre are to be lifted at the end of this month but will resurface in detailed discussions which are due to begin in October.

Separate proposals seeking a new plan

for the town centre were raised this week

by Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Ann Norton (IND) and Cllr Paul Murphy (FG).

“People are almost besieging us to bring in pedestrianisation,” Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) commented.

Cllr Pat Daly (FF) hailed pedestrianisation as “a great success” with Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) noting that the majority of the public want it introduced.

30 submissions on Shannon plan

by STUART HOLLY CLARE County Council has welcomed the positive engagement from members of the public, stakeholders, residents and business groups on the draft Shannon Town Centre Masterplan.

The closing date for submissions was September 3. In the seven weeks of consultation, there were over 8,000 page views, 152 registrations and over 2,000 visitors to the public consultation portal, in addition to the many callers to the public offices of Clare County Council.

Over 30 submissions and 94 online surveys were received on the public consultation and Brian McCarthy, Senior Planner, Clare County Council, has thanked everyone for their engagement and contributions to the proposed Masterplan.

The positive content, quality and level of detail of the submissions was acknowledged by the planning team who are reviewing and assessing every submission.

Over the coming weeks, the planning team will assess each submission to guide and inform the final draft Masterplan.

Following consideration of all submissions, consultation with the Elected Members and environmental and economic appraisals, it is anticipated that the final draft Shannon Town Centre Masterplan will be placed on public display by the end of the year for a final round of public consultation.

Ennis ranks high in remote working table

by PÁRAIC McMAHON AN ANALYSIS of Ireland’s towns and cities has found Ennis to be one of the top ten best places in the country to work from home in.

By analysing average property prices, access to 5G broadband, local crime rates, the number of local restaurants, GP access, food delivery services and the number of top local schools, Switcher.ie has identified the best locations to work from home in Ireland.

Ennis ranks in sixth position behind Sligo, Galway, Ballina, Killarney and Dundalk but ahead of Swords, Letterkenny, Kilkenny and Cork.

Its position was achieved due to average house prices of €203,194, a crime rate of 55.191 per 1000 people, 1.978 when it comes to GPs per 1000 people and 1.068 for the coffee shop equivalent.

According to the analysis from Switcher. ie, Ennis is deemed a great place if safety and house prices are “high on your list of priorities”. It added, “The safe environment offers access to some of the top schools so could be great for families.”

Shannon was listed as the 42nd best place to work from home in a total of 50 towns and cities were profiled. Its crime rate of 29.808 per 1000 people was low, so too the average house price of €150,923 which made Shannon the fifth cheapest place to work from home in. However the Airport town fell down in the rankings due to its restaurant offering.

Ireland had one of the highest work from home rates in Europe during the pandemic with the pattern set to continue for many more into the future in an altered fashion.

UNDREDS of mourners gathered in silence on Monday for the funeral of Broadford hurler Niall O’Brien hearing powerful tributes for the popular Limerick native.

Niall (21) died on Monday of last week following an incident on the Greek island of Ios while holidaying with friends.

Sporting jerseys including that of the Broadford hurling club, Castletroy Golf Club and school sides from Monaleen and Castletroy draped Niall’s coffin as it was shouldered into Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Milford on Monday afternoon. The clubs also had a guard of honour as the cortège left Limerick for Broadford with Wiz Khalifa’s ‘See You Again’ playing as the coffin was carried from the church.

Symbols brought before the Mass by friends and family included a hurley representing Niall’s love of sport. “Alan got fantastic points in his Leaving Cert but Niall would remind him he got 11 and a goal with it,” his aunt Pauline said in reference to her nephew’s man of the match display in guiding Broadford to glory in the U21B final in 2019.

ket-on-Fergus was also brought before the altar. A collage with some of Niall’s friends showed him at “the centre of the fun, having it and creating it,” Pauline noted. His formative years at school were remembered as his happiest with a school book an emblem of this, while a deck of cards to reflect the family’s Wednesday night ritual of pizza and cards was also remembered.

In a wonderful tribute to his son, Mike said that Niall was just about to begin his final year of studies in financial mathematics at UL, “He had a promising career and life ahead of him, unfortunately he won’t get the opportunity to realise his ambitions which brings profound sadness.

Niall has died as a very young man but during the years he was with us, he lived a happy and fulfilled life, we loved him greatly and will miss him terribly.

“He was born in December 1999, he was ten days late in arriving and it was a trend he continued for the rest of his life,” Mike said. “My brothers complained he was a few weeks early, they were thinking ahead, December rather than January meant he lost a year of underage hurling.”

Family tradition dictated Niall would hurl with Broadford although they lived in close proximity to Monaleen’s GAA club.

This ensured he had a strong passion for the club which led to many arguments with its chairman, Mike’s brother John.

In their close-knit family, Niall’s sense of fun was infectious, Mike commented. He spoke of their special birthday parties, the tradition of watching the All-Ireland hurling final together, pizza and card nights plus Christmas in Broadford and Kilkishen. “Niall has a special bond with his three brothers, he loved Cian, Eoin and Alan and loved to be with them, their friends always included him. But the one person Niall loved above else was Mom. If we heard it once, we heard it 20 times, ‘Mom where is this and Mom where is that’. As late as the August weekend, they stayed in Liscannor and went to Lahinch on the Saturday evening,” he added while noting that his wife would not be given all the details of Niall’s goings-on.

Shockwaves were sent through Monaleen, UL and Broadford when the news broke of Niall’s death, Fr John Campion reflected, “We could scarcely believe it then and we can scarcely believe it now, we’ve lost a valued member of our community.”

He described Niall as “a larger than life character with his talents and achievements”. Fr Campion continued, “Niall was a light. He had that ability to make friends and be a friend, he was a sure shelter, treasured by many for his loyalty and sense of humour”.

Being a true friend was natural to Niall, the UL chaplain explained as he told the congre-

gation Niall was blessed with a financial intellect. “He was a bit of a rogue, he was always able to come up with the ace of hearts.”

Fr Campion added, “Niall wasn’t rich in worldly terms but he left a legacy, in fact he left a treasury and since he has died that has been opened.” He commented, “It is a sad day for the whole community and whole university community as we say farewell to a legend among us.”

Three of Niall’s closest friends shared their memories with the congregation as they told Niall’s parents Mike and Anne, “you should be extremely proud of the son you raised”. They described him as “loyal and a genuinely hilarious guy”.

“Words can not describe how much of a true hero he was, no matter how dark, Niall always found a way to lift the mood.

As Niall said a few days ago, the king was back, he was a king but I could never tell him that because I couldn’t let his head get any bigger. He was a friend that will never be replaced, on behalf of all your friends you will never be forgotten.”

A friend of Niall’s who spent the past week with his remains as they waited for his body to be repatriated recalled the infectious laugh that ensured Nially was heard before he was seen. “Staying behind wasn’t a burden but a privilege, a privilege to spend time with such a special person.”

‘Very difficult’ year comes to end as 1,300 receive LC results PÁRAIC MCMAHON

LARE students are considering their future options with a significant rise in CAO points for most third level courses.

On Friday, the 1,328 students who sat their Leaving Certificate in Clare received their results, 694 were females and 634 males. A total of 89 persons in Clare (43 female and 46 male) did Leaving Certificate Applied and also discovered their results.

Students had a choice of sitting the Leaving Cert or receiving accredited grades back in June, with more than 90 percent opting to do both. The class of 2021 spent much of their senior cycle online with the pandemic having a notable disruption on their education since March of last year.

However, despite the points rise, there is good news for many third

Speaking on Monday, Cllr Alan O’Callaghan (FF) said it was spreading fear within the village. “People are in fear for their children, in fear for their safety and in fear for their property,” he stated.

Less people are parking outside the railway station and utilising the facility as a result, he claimed.

O’Callaghan added, “There is a lot of speculation as to what is happening with the encampment, another caravan has pulled in there, people have had enough of it, there is huge frustration.

“I want to see it put to bed.

It is very unfair, a lot of old people living within the area, they are in living in fear and I wouldn’t blame them.”

Walk-in testing is suspended

DUE to high volumes of people attending for COVID-19 testing, a decision has been taken to suspend walk-in tests at the Ennis Test Centre.

Testing is still available at the COVID-19 Test Centre in Ballymaley Business Park, but only by appointment. Tests can be booked via the HSE website, or through your GP. The centre’s opening hours of 11:10am6:30pm are unaffected. The changes which have already taken effect will be kept under review. There has been an increased demand for over recent weeks, with over 2,000 tests conducted last week in Ennis alone.

Meanwhile, Clare has the 11th highest uptake across the country for vaccinations against COVID-19.

Data accurate up until August 22 detailed that Clare’s percentage of vaccination uptake is at 93.7 percent making it the 11th highest of the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland. Ireland has the second highest vaccination uptake in the EU, behind Malta. The county breakdown does not include under eighteens that received the jab.

A total of 6,545 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in Co Clare since the onset of the pandemic.

Tributes to retiring Supt McDonagh

RIBUTES have been paid to a prominent Garda ahead of his retirement.

S u p e r i nt e n d e nt Brendan McDonagh is to retire from An Garda Síochána this week bringing the curtain down on four decades of service.

He was appointed a Superintendent in Ennis in March 2015, moving from his role as Inspector at Limerick’s Roxboro Road Garda Station. McDonagh previously worked with the traffic corps in Clare.

Speaking at Monday’s meeting of the Clare Joint Policing Committee, Chief Supt Seán Colleran acknowledged the contribution of his colleague and revealed that for Supt McDonagh’s final week on the job he was excused from attending the JPC. Colleran said, “He has made

Supt McDonagh’s commitment to Clare by spending up 34 of his 40 working years in the county was referenced by Chief Supt Colleran. “He will be hugely missed, he was really invested in

Clare, everything he did was for the right reason”.

Director of Service with Clare County Council, Leonard Cleary had already met Supt McDonagh to wish him well on his retirement. “He is an exemplary member of An Garda Síochána. Supt McDonagh was a great partner to Clare County Council on many difficult and positive projects”.

Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) stated, “Brendan has been a very good friend to the people of Clare. Policing in Clare is certainly in a better position than when he came into it”.

Golf will become a bigger priority for the retiring Garda, Cllr Alan O’Callaghan (FF) quipped.

“He was a fella you could always pick up the phone to. He gave years of service to us in Co Clare, he is trying to get his handicap down, he’ll be hitting the golf course now”.

N ASH tree was planted outside the former grounds of Newmarket-on-Fergus GAA following a ninety minute history talk at the location.

On Saturday last, former St Flanann’s College teacher Con Woods who also lined out for both Newmarket-on-Fergus and Clare led a talk on Kelly Halpin’s Field. The field was once the property of James and Anne Kelly Halpin hence its name. The Blues played here from the mid twenties until 1934 when Fr Murphy Memorial Park opened, this remains the home of Newmarket-on-Fergus GAA. Con is currently the owner of the Kelly Halpin’s Field and he recounted the history of the pitch and the clashes that took place there during the talk which was attended by close to fifty people.

When Kelly Halpin’s Field was their home, the Blues were in the ascendancy having won the county championship in 1926, ’27, ’28, 30 and ’31. In 1928 the Clare Champion Cup was first introduced and the Blues won it in ’30, 31,’32,’33. The 1930 Cup final was played there with Newmarket against Ennis, it finished 4-07 to 2-04 in favour of the hosts with Garda

Larry Walsh filling the cup in celebration as his son Joe savoured the memory.

Personalities who made Newmarket a force at the time were spoken about by Con with their descendants quite proud to hear and learn of their exploits. Special mention was reserved for The Hound Mack, he was a modest man yet could boast of running Larry Blake off the pitch.

Con concluded his account by quoting from Jim Hehir, trainer of the 1914 All Ireland winning Clare team who said the 1930 Cup final was of a better standard than the recently played Dublin county final.

Self-made hurleys was a source of great pride at the time, Con recalled. A picture of John Fox who has family connections in Knocksaggart was passed around to be signed by all present and given to Seanie McMahon, the club Vice Chairman. An ash tree purchased by Con was planted outside the field gate by Máire Ní Ghruagáin and Lewy Halpin.

Thirteen time Clare SHC winner Paddy McNamara, two-time All Star Johnny McMahon, ex Blues defender John O’Leary, local historians Máire Ní Ghruagáin, PJ Reidy, Pat Corry and Colm Liddy were among those in attendance plus current Blues boss Tomás Ryan and the Woods family.

Possession arrests on decrease

CLARE’S Chief Superintendent has said persons responsible for bringing drugs into the county need to be targeted.

Arrests related to simple possession of drugs in Clare has dropped from 210 in 2020 to 113 in 2021 for the period of January to August, a reduction of 46 percent.

Less arrests have also been made on the sale and supply of drugs in Clare this year with the figure of 57 lower than the 71 recorded last year.

Speaking on Monday, Chief Supt Seán Colleran outlined, “For sale or supply sometimes isn’t as accurate a picture as we think.

In the middle of that, some very significant amount of drugs have been seized.”

He was adamant that increased efforts need to made to catch the ring-leaders who are bringing drugs into Clare. “We have to target the people at the highest level bringing drugs into Clare and also the lower level crime associated with it”.

“S I G N I F I C A N T reduction of nearly a third” of burglaries in Clare has been recorded in the space of one year with thefts from vehicles rising.

From the period of January to August this year, there have been a total of 76 burglaries reported in Co Clare compared with 111 in the same timeframe last year which represents a reduction of 32 percent. Thefts from shops has decreased from 197 in 2020 to 165 this year.

There has been a 33 percent increase in the amount of thefts

from moved or parked vehicles across the county over the course of this year. 110 incidents were brought to Gardaí’s attention in Clare in 2021 compared with 83 last year.

Chief Superintendent of the Clare Garda Division, Seán Colleran described the drop in burglaries as “a significant reduction”. He acknowledged that the theft from cars “continues to be an issue. A lot of the crimes are related to tourist issues where people have parked their cars”.

Many of the thefts from cars occurred in the months of July and August, the Chief Supt revealed. “It is amazing the amount of people who are the subject of thefts from car where the car is actually left open”.

crease in thefts from shops but that trend has gone downwards.

In general in terms of high volume crimes, other than theft from MPV there is a downward trend that has continued down through the years,” he added.

Breakdowns by location of the theft from vehicles was requested by Clare TD, Violet-Anne Wynne (SF) at Monday’s meeting of the Clare Joint Policing Committee (JPC). She also sought statistics on the exact amount of instances where cars were left unlocked and could have been avoided.

Extra detail on the car burglaries was not available, the Chief Supt responded. “The opportunistic criminals that we’re looking at will keep going to a car until they find one,” he flagged.

Fall in domestic violence reports sparks questions

ARDAÍ in Clare have responded to less domestic disputes and breaches of barring orders this year, writes Páraic McMahon.

Figures released this week detailed that there were 60 breaches of barring orders in Clare so far in 2021 compared with 89 for the same period last year, a drop of 33 percent.

A reduction of 27 percent has been observed for domestic disputes with 308 instances dealt with this year and 423 in 2020.

Women’s Aid in their annual impact report for 2020 highlighted a 43 per cent increase in contacts with its services when compared to 2019.

The charity said that Covid-19 and associated restrictions had an “unprecedented and exhausting impact” on victims of domestic abuse.

Domestic violence in Ireland was made more visible, the report outlined. Last year, Women’s Aid support workers heard more than 30,000 disclosures of domestic violence, including coercive control.

Almost 24,900 disclosures were of abuse against women and nearly 6,000 related to child abuse in the context of domestic violence.

Sarah Benson, Women’s Aid’s chief executive, said the figures were “only the tip of the iceberg” when it came to the true numbers of people suffering

domestic abuse. “One in four women in Ireland are targeted during their lifetime by current or former partners, a shocking one in five will have been abused by the time they are just 25 years old – many for the first time as teenagers in their earliest intimate relationships”.

Clare TD, Violet-Anne Wynne (SF) queried at Monday’s meeting of the Clare Joint Policing Committee (JPC) why Clare had a decrease in domestic violence incidents “when there was an increase nationally”.

“I don’t know why Clare is lower, we wanted to show a greater increase in reporting of incidents to show a lack of fear wasn’t there,” Chief Supt Seán Colleran replied. “If the figures were higher we would say it was good that people were reporting it. I would be looking at it positively, by and large,” he added.

Reports of sexual assaults have increased by 29 percent this year up from 17 to 22 this year, the Chief Supt confirmed. “People should never be afraid to report anything to us, we have confidential processes,” he said.

Thirteen less public order offences have occurred this year, down from 175 to 162, this was linked to the closure of licenced premises according to the Chief Supt. “A slight increase” for assault causing harm and minor assault was recorded with 36 and 160 incidents dealt with respectively.

NGOING controversy surrounding the proposed appointment of Katherine Zappone to a UN role has heightened the need for Leo Varadkar (FG) to consider his position as Fine Gael leader, a prominent Clare member of the party has said.

Pressure is mounting on the Government over the manner in which business was conducted which almost led to the former Minister’s appointment as a special envoy to the UN. On Tuesday, it emerged Katherine Zappone was told of the appointment by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney (FG) more than four months before the matter was agreed by Cabinet.

Members of the party in Clare have previously voiced to The Clare Echo their annoyance over the lack of notification and knowledge given to party members when it comes to Minister visits, the most recent example being Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys (FG) trip to Clare at the end of July.

Constituency organiser with Clare Fine Gael, Geraldine Gregan believed it was time to discuss the

leadership of the party. “I would be of the view that Leo’s leadership standards and the way he is leading the party should be discussed, he is sapping energy out of the members of the party at the moment. He is using a sledge hammer to crack a nut from the point of view of control of his public representatives”.

“We’ve lost powerful people in recent times like former Fine Gaeler Phil Hogan for what I would consider not to be a huge demeanour that should have been weighed up against his power and use to Ireland, Leo didn’t defend him. We had Verona Murphy, his management of Dublin Bay South and his dealings with Kate O’Connell were over the top, the list goes on, Maria Bailey and golf gate. For every slight demeanour they have been taken apart and Leo should learn to foster the team a bit better and take care of his team and not to be baying with the wolves, he doesn’t have that quality and we need to question it,” the Clarecastle woman stated.

High-profile personnel like Josepha Madigan, Charlie Flanagan and Michael Creed have been very quiet in recent weeks as controversy has simmered, Geraldine felt.

“They’ve been sapped completely of belief because of this whipping control of the party and I do think Leo is responsible for that, I’m firmly laying that on his doorstep”.

She told The Clare Echo, “We

need to question what he is going to do going forward. We certainly

need to question his style of leadership, it is not good for the party,

there is a lack of energy in the party and I do hold Leo responsible”.

Excitement builds for return of Ennis Book Club Festival PÁRAIC MCMAHON OOK lovers are set to descend on Co Clare this weekend for the Ennis Book Club Festival (EBCF).

Several online events were held in March for the EBCF in its traditional time slot, this weekend in-person events will be held Saturday kicks with the Beyond Borders Book Club at Ennis Museum from 11.30am with guests from Mexico and Africa, hosted by poet Sarah Clancy. The launch of the Salmon Poetry Memory Book by Jessie Lendennie will take place in the afternoon, at Ennis Bookshop.

Jessie Lendennie is celebrating 40 years of publishing with this publication, specially commissioned by Ennis Book Club Festival.

Little John Nee will perform music and storytelling on O’Connell Square, entertaining passers-by with his original songs and writings, and creating fun, colour and a festival atmosphere.

Writer and Artist, Sara Baume will be part of The Alphabet of Birds, her spellbinding audio-visual essay, covering the multitude of rituals that fill our daily lives with meaning. Baume’s new essay is inspired by four short documentaries depicting artists at work on land and sea. These films will be screened accompanied by a live soundtrack of Sara’s words and live music.

Douglas Stewart will join Elaine Feeney in conversation on the glór stage in the evening. Douglas Stuart’s debut novel, Shuggie Bain, won the 2020 Booker Prize and has been published in over 30 territories. Future of Roche site in question

OPPORTUNITIES are being missed when it comes to the future development of Roche, a former Mayor of Clare has said.

March 2020 saw pharmaceutical operations cease at Roche, 36 years after its construction by the Syntex Corporation in Clarecastle. A search to find a buyer for the site proved unsuccessful when its closure was announced in November 2015.

Planning permission for a phased demolition of all existing buildings, structures and infrastructure at the Clarehill site was granted by Clare Co Co in March this year.

On Tuesday, councillors in the Ennis Municipal District approved a Section 38 for traffic calming in Clarecastle which include the clearing of Roche and additional parking at Church Drive.

Traffic calming and minor road improvements are referred to as a ‘Section 38” development. A road authority may, in the interest of the safety and convenience of road users, provide such traffic calming measures including footpath and cycle track improvements as they consider desirable in respect of public roads in their charge.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cllr Pat Daly (FF) voiced his concern that the local authority was failing to look forward when it came to the future of the Roche site. “When you are looking for enterprise, you have to do it years beforehand,” he commented and criticised the lack of organised visits with the IDA to try put in place a new factory or significant employer in Clarecastle.

Management of Roche have their “finger on the pulse,” Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) stated in response. He believed there was “no point talking” until the decommissioning and clearance works were completed and predicted it would take four to five years before detailed discussions with the IDA would commence.

Director of Service, Carmel Kirby acknowledged that the location was identified as one of the transformational sites in the Ennis 2040 and was anxious that it be developed in time.

Meelick’s speed limits

CONFLICTING speed limits by local authorities on the same stretch of road has been labelled as “nonsensical” by South Clare representatives.

Pass Rd in Meelick has a 50km/h speed limit set out by Limerick City and County Council whereas the limit just across the boundary from Clare Co Council is 80km/h.

Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) appealed to Clare County Council to bring its speed limit on the road to 50km/h at a recent sitting of the Shannon Municipal District. Clare’s last speed limit review was completed in 2018 and is initiated every five years by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Senior executive engineer in the road design office of Clare County Council, John Gannon stated that the boundary on Pass Rd would be reviewed under the next speed limit review which is set to commence next year.

Bringing down the limit was a small ask, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) felt.

Inspiring Imogen gives back to Ronald McDonald house PÁRAIC MCMAHON

MOGEN Brigdale may only be five months old but she is proving herself to be one inspirational character.

A post-natal diagnosis of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) saw Imogen transferred from the Maternity Hospital in Limerick to the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin where she would spend 70 nights and repeatedly defy the odds.

CDH is a rare birth defect in which a hole in the diaphragm allows the intestines, stomach, liver and other abdominal organs to enter the chest, impairing normal lung development.

The condition was one that her parents Jane O’Leary and Alan Brigdale had not heard of prior to her birth.

Once it became known that all was not right with Imogen, Crumlin’s emergency services were in Limerick within two hours to collect her. “She was too sick to travel in Limerick, that service alone when they hooked her up to different incubators to bring her to Dublin, we’re forever indebted to all of the services,” Jane says.

While Imogen was in ICU, her parents were put in touch

with Ronald McDonald house.

“They prioritise cases much like our own where we didn’t know we would be in Crumlin and the fact that we were from Clare in Dublin meant we had no support network, neither of us had family in Dublin or around. It can only house 20 families and there are a lot of sick children living in Crumlin so you join a waiting list and we were fortunate at the time that there was a vacancy. For the first few nights I was in the Coombe Maternity Hospital and Alan was in the parent accommodation within but then we were 68 nights living in Ronald McDonald house.”

Staff were a great source of comfort throughout their time there, the Newmarket-on-Fergus woman noted. She admitted that Covid-19 restrictions took their toll, “The situation was upsetting and stressful enough without having a very sick child in ICU. I had never heard of the condition CDH before I went to Crumlin.

Only one parent was allowed in at any one time, it is hard to sit with a child in ICU on your own.

“I was lucky to have Alan with me because a lot of people were on their own and it took its toll on the weekends, we went to Dublin with nothing because we didn’t know we would be there.”

With Imogen spending seven full weeks in intensive care, support from families they be-

friended in Crumlin was of great comfort. “There were days when we didn’t know what the outcome would be. When restrictions started to lift and we were allowed to use the dining room, it was great to sit down and talk with other families and parents. We all had low days and it was a shoulder to cry on.”

Numbers may have been restricted in hospital but both Jane and Alan were certainly not on their own when it came to the love received from their friends and their family. “People were incredible and continue to be incredible. Imogen is five months old now and people, every time we go for a walk are enquiring how she is and how she is doing, it is real genuine concern.

The amount of contact we had via Instagram, Facebook, text messages and phone calls blew us away, people sent up things and offered to do things, they couldn’t do enough and continue to be like that. We’re so fortunate both from our family backgrounds and our communities of Newmarket and Crusheen, we have such fantastic friends and neighbours,” the Deputy Principal of St Senan’s NS in Shannon maintained.

Anxious to give back in light of the assistance they received, Sunday’s Newmarket-on-Fergus Show tractor run will see all funds raised go towards Ron-

ald McDonald house, an idea for which Jane’s father Jim is credited with. She added, “The fact we spent so long in Ronald McDonald house, we had always said that please God if we came out the right side of it and came home safe and sound that we would give something back through a fundraiser”.

From 12pm on Sunday, registration of €20 will be taken at the Show Field on the Dromoland Rd in Newmarket for the tractor run. Departing at 1pm, the run will stop at The Honk Bar, while it’s hoped a children’s tractor run will go ahead at The Crabtree Tavern when the tractor run is finished, along with food and beverages.

Both Jane and Alan were noted for their tough nature in the defence on the field of play but they are overwhelmed with the resilience shown by their daughter. “She obviously has somebody looking down on her because she is meant to be here with the way she has fought from the minute she was born. It was a postnatal diagnosis so it was a real emergency situation, she survived a two hour ambulance journey to Crumlin, even the surgery she underwent where she had her internal organs re-aligned, thankfully she won’t remember any of it, I was an emotional wreck for seventy days but thankfully she has come out the right side of it”.

UNIOR Minister Hildegarde Naughton (FG) visited Shannon Airport on Monday where she held a meeting with Shannon Group CEO, Mary Considine.

Galway West TD, Naughton who is the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, visited the International Airport to see firsthand the airport operations since the recommencement of international travel and the developments that have taken place on the wider airport campus.

Clare’s Oireachtas members joined the Junior Minister on a tour of the €12.7m hold baggage screening facilities which were recently installed on the airside of the Airport. Some €6m in funding was provided by the Exchequer for this.

She met Shannon Group CEO, Mary Considine and acknowledged the impact of COVID-19 on the airport and wider aviation sector and re-iterated that the Economic Recovery Plan published by

While these are encouraging numbers, I am aware that this is only the beginning of recovery for aviation.”

There is a commitment within the Government to provide further support to Shannon Airport, the former Mayor of Galway outlined.

“Government is committed to ensuring that Shannon Airport, and the Shannon region, continue to be supported in the weeks and months ahead. We will continue to work closely together so as to ensure Shannon’s deserved position on the international map for visitors.”

Naughton also visited the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operation in the airport which was the first preclearance facility for scheduled transatlantic traffic in Europe. The Minister is hopeful that we will see a return of transatlantic flights from Shannon.

Mary Considine felt the visit of the Junior Minister demonstrated her commitment to the recovery and growth of Shannon Airport.

“It was great to welcome Minister Naughton to Shannon Airport to see the progress we have made on upgrading our core infrastructure

including our new Hold Baggage Screening facility which will be completed shortly.

“We have used the downtime during the Pandemic to progress these essential works which would not have been possible without Government support. We also welcomed the opportunity to update the Minister on some of the exciting developments taking place on the airport campus including our ongoing work with Future Mobility Campus Ireland to develop a testbed for driverless cars and future plans to establish Ireland’s first passenger and cargo vertiport.”

New airlines can be lured to Shannon Airport for routes and bases thanks to the new baggage screening facilities, Clare TD Cathal Crowe (FF) maintained. “Firstly, in developing this new baggage screening system, Shannon becomes the first airport in the EU to have a screening system that perfectly aligns both the European and TSA screening requirements that operate in the US. This, on top of pre-clearance that already operates at Shannon, should make it far more attractive for airlines to use Shannon for a stepping stone from Europe to North America.”

Several near misses at Parteen junction

“S

EVERAL near misses” at a Parteen road junction have led to calls for the installation of traffic calming measures.

Provision of speed ramps at Sweeps Rd in Parteen leading to the junction with the R464 were sought by Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF).

Clare County Council’s road design office will be asked to consider the works following an assessment of the road and its environs, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett stated.

Highlighting the need for traffic calming measures, Cllr O’Gorman outlined, “It is a blind entrance on the bend and there has been several near misses. I went in myself, I turned into the house and you nearly have to turn off the engine of the car to see what is coming, it is that blind.”

He continued, “It is being used for lorries coming and going so it is extra busy. I would ask it be looked at sooner rather than later before there is an accident. The house is being used as a business too.” The Cratloe representative concluded, “When the house was built there was nothing only a horse and trap going up the road, now there is lorries, cement mixers and plenty of traffic”.

Cllr Michaell Begley (IND) noted. “This is one of those situations where you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t”. He said, “the entrance to the house is fairly ancient and has an attractive stone structure. It needs at the minimum traffic calming measures”.

ENEWED pressure is mounting on the Department of Transport to expedite the appointment of a new Chairperson of Shan-

non Group.

With the political hiatus coming to a close, Clare politicians are refreshed following their holidays with Deputy Cathal Crowe (FF, pictured) now issuing a renewed appeal for the Department of Transport to appoint Rose Hynes’ successor.

North Clare native Hynes vacated the position last August when her extension expired, an attempt

to put Aaron Forde the former CEO of Aurivo into the role in February fell through when offensive social media remarks surfaced.

Officials within the Department of Transport have had a shortlist of candidates from the Public Appointments Service for the past month, it is understood the process of interviewing the shortlisted personnel will take a week.

On Monday morning, Minister of State at the Department of Transport with special responsibility for International and Road Transport and Logistics, Hildegarde Naughton (FG) visited Shannon Airport.

The need to appoint an individual with strong aviation credentials was highlighted by Deputy Crowe during this visit.

“There are many good businessmen and women in the region who

understand finance, agri-business and other sectors but what we really need in the Shannon context is

somebody who understands aviation and in particular, the important role that Shannon Airport has as a catalyst for a huge amount of economic activity in the Midwest.

Someone with a strong aviation background will be key to the airport as it strives to make a recovery and attract new routes – in particular, re-establishing routes to North America,” he stated.

Deputy Crowe acknowledged that he previously sought for time to be taken when it came to the appointment. “Many months ago, I asked Minister Eamon Ryan to slow down ever so slightly the appointment process to make sure that the right person would be appointed. I never intended that the process would take this long and the ongoing delay is a cause of concern to many people who want

Consideration to reconfiguring the Shannon Group board must also be made, the Meelick native believed. “I believe that Minister Naughton and Minister Ryan should also look at a reconfiguration of the Shannon board to bring in other voices from the region.

With local authorities including Clare County Council set to take on the running of Shannon Heritage sites in 2022, the Shannon Group will now be focusing all of its attentions on the running of the airport and also the group’s extensive commercial property portfolio. Alterations are needed to slow down motorists in Smithstown, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) maintained. “After 8 & 9 o’clock, the speed of some of the traffic is unbelievable.

It is a long straight road, I’m really astonished with how much the speed can gather, it lends itself to speeding”.

THOROUGH period of public consultation is to be held regarding the potential introduction of full-time pedestrianisation in Ennis.

By the end of September, the Temporary Covid-19 Ennis Town Centre Mobility Plan is to be lifted.

Outdoor dining in Ennis was hailed as a success by Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) as he requested “a thorough period of public consultation on re-entering a similar project on a permanent basis”. He explained that this would encapsulate the views of residents of affected areas, local traders, relevant stakeholders and the public “with

a view to concluding with a proposal that would satisfy the majority and allow Ennis to continue to thrive as we continue to exit from the Covid 19 Pandemic”.

Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Ann Norton (IND) appealed for interest from different groups in Ennis to be gauged to put together a new plan for the town.

Senior Executive Officer Leonore O’Neill detailed that the mobility plan “was not intended as a permanent measure” and the Council will separately be undertaking a “wider consultation with the public through the development of the Ennis Mobility Plan which is a requirement under the National Development Plan”.

Cllr Murphy outlined, “The appetite seems to be there for it to continue. The main feedback was that domestic trade was great, most of them seem to be coming

Screens to block flooding ‘could create bigger issues’

by PÁRAIC Mc MAHON PROVISION of screens to prevent blockages along the Tulla Rd could lead to “devastating consequences,” a Council engineer has warned.

Flooding at Aughavaddy on the Tulla Rd and Gaurus Bridge was referenced by Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) and Cllr Mary Howard (FG) in separate motions put before the Ennis Municipal District on Tuesday.

Citing “historic flooding” of the R352 on the Tulla Rd plus previous flow blockages and restrictions at Aughavadda, Cllr Flynn asked that screens be provided immediately “to prevent blockages resulting in restric-

tion of flow of the Ballymachill river at these bridges”.

Regular cleaning of the culvert at Aughavaddy was requested by Cllr Howard who highlighted, “there is also evidence of dumping in the stream thus blocking the two pipes which are approximately only three feet in diameter”.

Executive engineer, Barry Conway confirmed that maintenance and clearance works would be arranged at both the upstream and downstream sides of both bridges prior to the winter months and to implement a regular inspection schedule throughout the winter.

He cautioned that installing screens would require “careful consideration as they can often times create bigger issues than they resolve. This is of particular concern in times of high intensity rainfall which can mobilise large quantities of relatively small debris which can clog the screens. There have been recent examples of this happening in Donegal and Dublin with devastating consequences”.

An “inadequacy” of the bridge structure to handle the flow of water let to six days of flooding in 2009, Cllr Flynn stated. Recollections of sandbags being put in cars in 2009 was also recalled by Cllr Howard who relayed the concerns of residents on the Tulla Rd that the proposed Ennis Data Centre could impact on the water flow.

Cllr Pat Daly (FF) and Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) both felt demand exists among the public for a pedestrianisation plan.

Director of Service, Carmel Kirby said that an Ennis Mobility Plan would be completed next year and would include aspects such as parking, cycling and a pedestrian friendly town. Ms O’Neill informed the meeting that a widespread survey was likely to be completed in the middle of next month which would have a twoweek window for submissions.

A new school year of hope amidst unusual times RONAN SCULLY

Thought for the week

A

S WE begin a new school year, many things feel the same.

We are still in the midst of a pandemic, still facing an uncertain future. A new school year marks excitement for some, seeing old classmates and the prospect of new friendships.

For others, it is a time of anxiety.

We are to pray about everything and worry about nothing, trusting in God to intervene in quiet, wholesome ways. But we all know that our world is different now.

Educational life will continue to adjust. However, the children and students are the same; ambitious, inquisitive, funny, wonderful young people. My hope to teachers for this September, is to put those students at the centre of their planning and don’t worry about ‘being behind’ or where you ‘should be’ with the curriculum. Now is not the time for this. Keep focussing on the children in the room and their mental well-being. We thank you most sincerely, the Teacher, for all you do for our children.

Emotional Hope For now it is that time of year when children are back to school, whilst others may be preparing for third-level education and moving from home for the first time. We all hope that our children will be independent thinkers, open-minded and confident in reaching decisions. For some, the transition can be overwhelming, for others a break for freedom! Either way, we should all sit down together as families, as parents, as students and ensure we are educated on all the resources for students as they navigate the next part of their journey.

What a few emotional days we had in the Scully household this week with our daughters Mia and Sophie starting back to school. It’s a huge occasion, especially when it’s the last child starting school.

It’s a special milestones in life.

We pray it will be a great first few weeks for all young people going to school and third level especially when you consider all the children in our world that don’t have the same opportunities. I hope that they, and their teachers, enjoy everything that they do and learn.

Again a story might help to explain my thoughts on how sometimes Teachers can teach us a lot and have always been frontline heroes.

The Teacher who Loved made the difference Years ago a University professor gave a group of graduate students

this assignment: Go to the slums.

Take 200 children, between the ages of 12 and 16, and investigate their environment. Then predict their chances for the future. The students, after consulting social statistics, talking to the children, and compiling much data and information, concluded that 90 percent of the children would spend some time in jail. Twenty-five years later, another group of graduate students was given the job of testing that prediction. They went back to the same area. Some of the children - by then adults - were still there, a few had died, some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the original 200. They found that only four of the group had ever been sent to jail. Why was it that these adults, who had lived in a breeding place of crime, had such a surprisingly good record? The researchers were continually told by the children who were now adults: “Well, there was this teacher...” They pressed further, and found that in 75 percent of the cases it was the same teacher who taught and cared for them. The researchers went to this teacher, now living in a retirement home. How had the teacher managed this remarkable influence over that group? Could the teacher give any reason why these boys should have remembered them?

“No,” the teacher said, “no, I really can’t think of any reason that they would remember me.” And then, thinking back over the years, the teacher reflected more to herself than her questioners and said “I loved those children...”

A New School Year Prayer A huge thank you to all teachers, for your heart, devotion, and love for our children. As parents, we are so grateful for you, our words may not always fully express what we feel inside. We appreciate all that you do, often behind the scenes where no-one even sees. Know that you are loved and valued by many.

You are an amazing gift to our kids and to our families! God’s blessings over you, this new year ahead especially with the added extreme worry of the Coronavirus still hanging around. Thank you God for the gift of our children. Please watch over them as they go back to school this week and protect them in everway. Help them to be a light to others and help them to always show love, care and respect to their friends and teachers. Please protect them and give them courage to stand up to negative influences.

Help them to remember when they

are afraid, You are there with them.

Please look after all our children and their teachers and lecturers now and always as they begin this new year on their school and college and university journey’s.

A prayer for our teachers and children, as we start back to school this year…

Thought for the Week As your thought for the week, let us all try as much as possible to make a difference for the good in one another’s life’s as much as we can especially during this worrying time of the Coronavirus, for we all need help and support and indeed our country needs us all to make a difference for the good of one another as we continue to face into the dreadful economic situation that we find ourselves in because of the dreadful Pandemic.

Let’s all make a difference together and for one another. Best of luck and much safety to all students, teachers and lecturers as they all try to make a difference for the good in one another’s lives over the coming school and educational year. Thank you to all Teachers and Lecturers and indeed to all frontline workers in medical, retail, educational and various frontline settings for all they do for us all.

Let’s also think of those children who will never have an opportunity to go to school because of wars, poverty, because they are a girl and in some cases because of people’s inhumanity to each other.We do not know what this new school year will bring; It will likely bring us its usual times of work and play, experiences of learning, newness, success and challenges, All things that are part of school life. It’s a new beginning; The planting of a seed that will grow for a year, The seed of fruit that will blossom in times to come. It offers new hope; Hope for good work, for successful results, For friendship, for fun, for learning. In this coming year, may there be learning, prayer, and fun.

May there be hard work, faith and friendship. May no one in school be lonely; May no one be left out in class; May no one suffer because of how others treat them. As we begin this new school year in hope, in prayer and friendship, May God begin it with us, be with us during it, and successfully bring it to its conclusion. ntroducing smart solar bins in Shannon would be “contrary” to policies in place by Clare County Council.

An appeal for an increased amount of bins in the town was issued by Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) before a meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. Her proposal was seconded by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND).

She urged the local authority to avail of funding for “smart solar, compacting, composter, big belly bins for the graveyard and along the loop”.

In May, the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD (GP), announced €5m in additional funding for litter infrastructure and awareness campaigns to encourage people to dispose of their rubbish thoughtfully.

As part of this, he sought an immediate mapping of bin infrastructure to identify opti-

mum placement of new bins and to pin point where smart solar-compacting bins could be feasible.

Senior executive engineer with the Shannon MD, Tom Mellett in response to Cllr McGettigan’s proposal detailed that the Council is currently operating the policy of ‘leave no trace’ which he explained encourages the public to “remove any waste they generate from public areas, introducing new bins to an area runs contrary to this policy”.

Efforts are underway to “support an increase in litter picking frequency along the embankment walk and the town in general,” he added. In this regard, the Municipal District has engaged with Shannon Tidy Towns and a local social enterprise company.

Absence of the graveyard from the increased litter collections needed to be revised, Cllr McGettigan felt. It is becoming more common for constituents to flag instances of rubbish being left behind, she said.

“Leave No Trace is a great policy but it is not working,” Sinn Féin’s sole elected member of the local authority believed.

Kilnasoolagh Park footpaths included in remediation project IMPROVEMENT works at Kilnasoolagh Park in Newmarket-on-Fergus have been included in Clare County Council’s 2021 footpath remediation project, writes Paraic McMahon.

Senior executive engineer with the Shannon Municipal District, Tom Mellett confirmed the inclusion of the footpaths from houses 58 to 82 of the Newmarket-on-Fergus estate in the project.

Its inclusion had been requested by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) who flagged that the footpaths were “in a dangerous condition”.

He outlined, “A lot of people are retired in that area, the majority of the houses are being lived in by people in retirement or who have lived in Kilnasoolagh all their lives. The footpaths needed upgrading, the ones across from them were upgraded”.

McMahon added, “the green area in Kilnasoolagh is used by the children, it is one of our fine green areas”.

Noticeable needs for improvement were clear to see at the location, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) stated. “The water infrastructure is visible on some of the paths”. He recalled that a lot of people in Kilnasoolagh were “without water during the big freeze”.

N TAISCE’S National anti-litter Spring Clean campaign takes place throughout the month of April. Last year, 500,000 volunteers collected 2,900 tonnes of litter nationally.

The National Spring Clean is Ireland’s official anti-litter campaign and over the past 21 years, the initiative has been highlighted the collective responsibility we share in tackling and preventing our national litter problem. National Spring Clean is operated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce in partnership with Local Authorities and supported by the Department of Communi-

cations, Climate Action and Environment.

This year, due to the campaign’s success in previous years, the National Spring Clean ran from April to the end of August meaning that Spring Clean 21 is Ireland’s longest running and largest anti-litter campaign to date.

Over 3,500 Clare volunteers have participated in organised clean-ups across over 200 locations in the county. Furthermore, National Spring Clean has been a starting point for a large number of groups to organise recurring clean-up events throughout the rest of the year.

Our consumption patterns and how we dispose and treat our waste has a substantial impact on the levels of emissions of several greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change.

National Spring Clean Manager, Emlyn Cullen said: “This year we had the longest and biggest National Spring Clean campaign ever and we want to thank all the groups and individuals around Ireland who joined us. While waiting for Spring Clean 2022, there are several ways in which communities and individuals around Ire-

Bloody finger, porridge bread

SUFFERRED the massive misfortune of driving a kitchen knife through my middle finger at work this week. A couple of stitches in A&E , and a massive bandage later, meant I was extremely restricted about what I could do in the kitchen. Fortunately for me, I always have simple recipes in my back pocket that require very little effort for a lovely payoff.

One of those recipes is a very simple porridge bread. Porridge bread uses oat flakes in place of flour so is great for reducing gluten intake, or if you’re not arsed about gluten, it’s just a lovely thing to eat in its own right.

Step 3 The loaf when baked, should be golden brown and make a hollow sound when you tap the bottom. (If you’re in doubt, a few extra minutes in the oven rarely does these loaves much harm) Step 4 Serve it up with soup, salad, as an open sandwich or even on its own dripping in good Irish butter.

This loaf, when cooked, should re-

semble a traditional wheaten loaf. It’s a good recipe to play around with flavours as well. Pumpkin seeds, sesame, linseed, walnuts and pecans all work well with this and if your feeling adventurous, try adding a spoon of treacle as well.

HROUGHOUT my whole Miss Clare journey I learned so much on how I can make a big difference when fundraising for a well deserved cause.

When a charity relates to you on a deeper level it is hard not to want to help them. I have learned a lot about the importance of charity work and standing up for what I believe in.

I want to make a difference in any way I can for those that need help most. I want to influence a lot of the younger generation that you don’t have to be a certain age to take part in charity work and to make it something they can do on the side, just like their hobbies. This sets a great example of how the younger generation will learn to help others.

A charity I want to talk about is Grow Mental Health. I have written about this outstanding organisation before but I want to talk about the impact they have made on others in more depth.

Grow provides free support groups for the public and in the workplace, which are mainly community based, for anyone experiencing mental health issues. I like

the idea behind this because people genuinely don’t feel alone in their own mind.

It’s a nice reminder that the group you’re apart of, are all on the same boat with you.

The main goal of their programme is to spread awareness of mental health, Grow expresses the fact that your mental health is very much relevant in everyday life as well as everything else.

I think this is a very important thing to outline because your inner wellbeing is the foundation of how you treat life itself. I notice a lot of people tend to ignore what their mind needs, and carry on with everyday life, brushing it off. Ignoring the mind can often result in mental issues later on in life. Grow is an amazing outlet for anyone to have a chat. These chats with support groups are also done over zoom.

If you’re suffering from negative thoughts, trauma or simply not feeling okay, I would encourage you to talk. It is a very hard task but it can make the biggest difference. Simply talking to someone will show how much you are loved. Strength comes from those who have suffered and have spoken about it to close people around them. It shows major resilience, courage and trust. Investing in yourself is something that isn’t talked about enough

and it should be the first thing on the list when bettering your mental wellbeing.

Indian summer Fine Gael keen to sweep offers respite for it all under the rug land and animals

I

T IS not unreasonable to describe what we are experiencing at the moment as an Indian summer rather than autumn.

The morning fogs and heavy dews are burning off to give way to glorious sunshine and temperatures well into the twenties. It could not come at a better time. Our grazing rotation is now at thirty days to allow us to maximise the growth from this balmy autumnal period. The more grass we have the more grass we will grow, each green blade acting like a verdant natural solar panel.

Cattle are content too, it is as if they realise the hectic schedule of their years duties are behind them with a knowing sense that they must bask in today’s sun because the cold winds of winter are just around the corner.

The past fortnight’s weather has allowed us to tidy up the last of this year’s silage in the form of bales.

We averaged just over five bales to the acre, it was cut, spread out with the tedder and baled a day later. The quality should be excellent as it was a leafy sward that had no stem as it was mowed before. These bales although not high in quantity will act as a buffer for the end of the year when grass is getting scarce and feed value is dropping due to low dry matter.

These meadows are already greening up nicely again which is a testament to how warm the soil is and hopefully these fields will build enough of a cover as to allow them to

be used for grazing by our replacement heifer late into the autumn and early winter. Now that these meadows have been cut, our next job is to get our contractor to cut the hedges.

Hedge cutting is a key job and is the only way to keep a farm looking aesthetically pleasing along with maintaining a health hedgerow ecosystem. Hedges and trees add real value to a farm, however in the case of the hedges they require ongoing maintenance and if left undone they grow tall and begin to thin.

Our new flock of young hens are currently on a pre-lay feed which is aimed at giving these birds a calcium rich diet before they begin laying, the aim of this regime is to make sure the young hens develop fully for life as a laying hen. When this piece of the puzzle is done correctly, we should have a strong, robust and healthy hen that can enjoy a long productive life on pasture. Frank and I are really impressed with our new flock of Lohmann Brown hens.

This particular breed of hen lays a very high quality egg from the yolk and white to the shell.

Typically the autumn is usually a quiet time on our farm but with the addition of an expanding Melody Farm Eggs this has changed. The fundamentals of managing a flock of hens is no different to managing a herd of cows, the details might differ however, it still necessitates high standards of animal welfare, good grassland management and decent technical proficiency on the farmers side.

N A week where the Government announced a €20 billion housing plan, during a housing crisis, secured almost €1bn is EU funding for post-Covid recovery, and begun the process of fully re-opening society from restrictions, you’d think that focus would be on positive news stories.

Instead of Taoiseach Martin doing a victory lap and basking in platitudes though, the political focus of the country is on text messages sent to Simon Coveney and a picture of Leo Varadkar at a London music festival. As embarrassing as this is, the fury of various Fianna Fáil TDs and Senators is palpable, with many taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Once again, the actions of certain Ministers have completely overshadowed the workings of Government.

However, given that it is Fine Gael Ministers, it appears they are keen to try wait out controversy and attempt to sweep it all under the rug.

Firstly, what the Tánaiste did was 100 per cent legal and within all regulations. This would be a gigantic non-story if it wasn’t for the fact that there have been many of these types of instances involving him in a very short period. He too was caught up in Merriongate and his Department has been intrinsically involved with the ongoing restrictions on the live entertainment sector. Only last week he was stating how UK festivals, and the lack of restrictions on them, was a poor barometer as to how safe they were. As he made this statement, he would have fully known that he was going to be attending one the following weekend. There have been issues in the past regarding picnics and other social activities in his private life. It should be stated that every TD is entitled to their down time and a private life, but in the social media age, he must know that, as a senior politician, scheduled to return to the Taoiseach’s office at the end of next year, that his actions have greater scrutiny than others.

lDISTRACTION: While embarassing, what the Tánaiste did was legal

Some might say that’s an unfair standard to hold him too, but it’s the unfortunate pitfall of the job. The saving grace for Leo being that literally every other political party has had dubious relations at one point or another with following Covid guidelines over the past 18 months. This will blow over, but more so because of timing for him.

That timing being the release of text messages and other documentation by the Department of Foreign Affairs concerning the appointment of Katherine Zappone to the UN Special Envoy role and the Minister’s involvement in it. The documents released cast a doubt over Simon Coveney’s previous account of the timeline of events and brings his statement in the Oireachtas on the issue into question. This is a far more serious issue and one that has rightly called the integrity of the process of such appointments out as scandalous. Effectively, Zappone wrote a job description for herself and lobbied her FG ex-cabinet colleagues to give her the role, funded by taxpayer cash. How nobody involved in the process saw this for what it was, and cried stop is beyond me. The fact that the FG members of the cabinet pressed ahead with it without telling their cabinet colleagues from other parties betrays the fact that in their heart of heart, they too knew this appointment, or the manner of it at least, was wrong. FG came to power in early 2011 with promises of

cleaning up politics and making things more transparent and accountable. It appears that a decade in office has seen them fall further and further towards the arrogance of the bad old days of nods and winks and then, when caught out, dismissing demands for an explanation with a bolshie attitude. They have become the party of low standards in high places. Only for the Taoiseach’s weakness to hold them to account, there would already be a head on a plate by now. I fully expect that between me penning this piece and it going to print, opposition parties will already be lining up a potential no confidence vote in Coveney.

Yet, all this is occurring as Darragh O’Brien tries to launch the biggest housing proposal in the history of the state. His plan has received wide praise from many housing charities and interest groups. Opposition have raised concerns, some legitimate, some off the wall. It’s not a perfect plan and the lack of a vacant plot tax is a missed opportunity in my view. However, given the limits on the industry, it is a plan that is realistic in its goals. There are only so many construction professions in Ireland and materials are being squeezed internationally.

It remains to be seen will this Government have the gumption to succeed with housing where others have failed.

Reunion of friends, staff as Clarecastle Centre reopens

LARECASTLE Daycare Centre will reopen next week after the facility faced a lengthy forced closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following a “very difficult year”, clients from Clarecastle and its surrounding parishes will be welcomed back next Tuesday, September 14, with great anticipation in the air, ahead of the happy reunion of friends, volunteers and staff.

The daycare centre provides health-based services, recreational activities and daily meals for service users. Staff have remained in regular contact with service users throughout the last 18 months, however Centre Manager Deirdre Ryan tells The Clare Echo that it’s the

return to meaningful interaction that has sparked most excitement.

All staff and clients are now fully vaccinated, and Deirdre explains that there’s great relief that some semblance of normality can finally resume. “Over the period of Covid when the centre had to close, the staff have been keeping in contact with the clients – particularly those living on their own “ The clients have been grateful for the contact and a friendly voice at the end of the phone.

“Since I took over in August, it was with a view to formalise a reopening and as restrictions are opening, we decided the time was right.

There was some renovation work to be done which is almost completed. People are ready and happy to move on from Covid safely now, while still aware that it’s there. I have spoken to clients myself on the phone to introduce myself and they just can’t

So the whole theme of reopening is all positive,” explained Deirdre, adding that her message to clients is, “we can’t wait to get you back, can’t wait to see you, can’t

The centre is now 21 years in operation and Deirdre paid tribute to all the volunteers and people who have helped fundraising efforts over the years to help es-

tablish the centre’s fantastic reputation. The centre offers a wide range of services including; health promotion, physiotherapy, chiropody hairdressing, and a wide variety of activities. From

Monday to Friday, the centre looks after clients coming from 16 different parishes all within a ten mile radius of Clarecastle.

Deirdre says the management look forward to upcoming fundraising efforts, which have faced enormous challenges over the last two years. She adds that for service users, it’s the return to meaningful socialising which will take top billing, while adding that new visitors are always welcome.

“They all say they love the music and singing, and getting their hair done. Mary cooks a beautiful dinner here and they all talk about their gorgeous fresh scones in the morning. They have missed meeting their friends, spending time meaningfully and enjoying themselves.”

WO Clare companies have been chosen as finalists for the Irish Made

Awards.

Almost 400 entries were received for the 2020 Irish Made Awards, the highest amount of submissions received to date. Judges have narrowed down the entries to 116 finalists across ten categories and have selected two Clare companies as part of this.

SIAR Photography has been listed as a finalist in the home category. Founded in 2019 by Ennis based husband and wife, Gary Collins and Aoife Lenihan, SIAR Photography offers over 80 original photos by Gary, with each print printed, packaged and sold from our home studio in County

Clare.

Meaning ‘West’ or ‘Westward’, as Gaeilge, Siar offers greeting cards, notebooks and tote bags, and recently collaborated with a local candle producer to create our first candle “Trá”, a scent inspired by the Irish beach and coastline.

Both Gary and Aoife have said they are thrilled to be named as finalists. “Being Irish made is central to SIAR Photography, so we are proud to be considered for this category alongside some truly amazing makers and businesses”.

Beo Wellness is also in the hunt for honours. The company founded by Sharon Connellan and Aoibhin Garrihy is in the gift category. Since its beginning in 2017, BEO has raised over €30,000 for youth wellness.

Its nominated charities are Jigsaw (the national centre for youth mental health) and the Elevate Foundation.

FIANNA Fáil Spokesperson on Tourism and Aviation Cathal Crowe has expressed hope that Shannon Airport’s new baggage screening facilities will play a part in luring new airlines to look to Shannon for routes and bases.

The €12m facility has been shown to Oireachtas representatives today, as part of Minister of State for Transport Hildegarde Naughton’s visit to Shannon Airport.

“As part of a visit to Shannon Airport in the company of Minister Hildegarde Naughton, I was shown the state-of-the-art baggage screening facilities, recently

installed on the airside of the airport.

“The new facilities will mean that luggage will make its way from the departure hall through a series of conveyor belts into the new baggage screening hall, which has brand new scanning machines which can detect dangerous items packed into luggage.

“In developing this new screening system, Shannon becomes the first airport in the EU to have a screening system that perfectly aligns both the European and TSA screening requirements that operate in the US. “This, on top of pre-clearance that already operates at Shannon, should make it

far more attractive for airlines to use Shannon for a stepping stone from Europe to North America. It should also make Shannon more appealing to air traffic from further afield such as the Middle East.

“Secondly, luggage now leaving a flight from Shannon Airport will be seamlessly transferred onto connecting flights to and in North America. This will be very attractive to returning passengers to the US and indeed Irish passengers making an outbound journey.”

The cost of the new facilities has exceeded €12m, with the government providing €6m of that capital funding.

IANNA Fáil TD for Clare Cathal Crowe has welcomed the allocation of €186,875 to Clare County Council under the government’s Outdoor Dining Enhancement Scheme.

The funding has been allocated to help develop public spaces and facilitate yearround outdoor dining and will focus on the town centre, Francis Street, Lower Parnell Street, the Abbey Street Car Park and the Templegate Plaza.

“Businesses across Clare and the country have adapted hugely to deal with the outdoor dining necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Deputy Crowe.

“It’s one of the very few positives of this pandemic that we, as a country, are now ramping up the dining options available to ourselves as citizens and also tourists.

“The funding allocated to Ennis will add to the already stellar outdoor spaces that have sprung up around the town over the past few months.

That was until the home side scored three quick-fire tries as Nicole Cronin, Stephanie Nunan and Deirbhile Nic a Bhaird crossed the whitewash to add to Clodagh O’Halloran’s first-half effort to give Munster some breathing room as the match entered the final 10 minutes. Aoife Doyle got Munster’s fifth try on the stroke of full-time to cap off an impressive Munster performance.

Just like in the Kingspan Stadium last Saturday, Munster were quick out of the

traps with a Muirne Wall break up the near touchline bringing play up to the Connacht 22. Maeve Óg O’Leary followed up with a strong carry before Matt Brown’s side went through the phases and edged closer to the Westerners’ line before Player of the Match Clodagh O’Halloran weaved her way through an overstretched Connacht defence to touch down.

Quarter-final spots secured by Tulla & Smith O’Briens as race heats up

IN the race for the intermediate hurling championship title a number of the clubs shortlisted for honours this season have moved closer to the knock out stage after the weekend’s round 2 games.

St. Josephs Doora/Barefield, Tulla, Sixmilebridge, Ruan and Smith O’Briens all recorded their second successive wins in the campaign while Tubber, last year’s beaten finalists, bounced back into contention with victory over Inagh-Kilnamona.

Corofin who were also surprisingly beaten in the opening round, got back to winning ways when they accounted for Clonlara.

At this stage Smith O’Briens and Tulla are sure of their places in the quarter final draw while Sixmilebridge, Doora/Barefield and Ruan are hotly fancied to join them.

Tubber and Killanena are battling to qualify along with Sixmilebridge.

It’s between Corofin and Parteen to qualify along with St. Josephs while a win for Bodyke over pointless Clarecastle will keep them in the hunt to qualify from the group along with Ruan.

SIXMILEBRIDGE IN CONTROL Sixmilebridge 3-24 Killanena 0-15 Venue: Clooney

A strong start which led to an eleven point interval lead paved the way for Sixmilebridge’s comfortable victory over Killanena on Saturday.

Goals from Cathal Lynch and Jack Corry helped the winners to a 2-5 to 0-4 advantage by the first waterbreak.

A David O’Connor goal stretched the winner’s lead out to 3-11 to 0-9 by half time and from here on Killanena were struggling as they were reduced to fourteen when Todd Kelsey picked up a second yellow card which led to his dis-

missal.

The winners were the sharper outfit throughout and dominated in the key areas but credit to Killanena who battled to the end.

TUBBER BOUNCE BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Venue: Clonlara

A strong first half showing which saw them build up an eleven point lead by the mid point of the game was the foundation for Tubber’s merited win over Inagh-|Kilnamona on Saturday evening.

The opening goal came when backs and forwards contested a high delivery into the Inagh/Kilnamona square and the ball ended up in the net with full forward Nathan Murray likely to have got the final touch.

Clare senior panellist Domhnall McMahon was the North Clare outfit’s second goal scorer.

Inagh-Kilnamona did much better in the second half but the Tubber defence held firm and didn’t concede a goal.

Sean Withycombe top scored with 1-12 as Tulla advanced towards the knock out stage of the intermediate championship with a comfortable victory over O’Callaghans Mills on Saturday evening.

While the winners led all the way, the opening half was a tight affair with the Tulla men 0-9 to 0-7 in front at the interval.

The winners stepped up a gear in the second half and Withycombe’s goal shortly before the final whistle sealed a merited win in a tie in which the Mills had their goal from full forward Jamie Keane.

ALL SO EASY FOR SMITH O’BRIENS Smith O’Briens 3-20 Cratloe 0-7

Smith O’Briens made it two wins from two outings when they easily overcame a depleted Cratloe.

The win has guaranteed them qualification to the quarter finals from this group along with Tulla.

ST. JOSEPHS DOORA/BAREFIELD GO MARCHING ON St. Josephs continued their march towards the play offs when they proved too strong for Parteen at Shannon on Saturday afternoon.

Ahead by four points at half time, they dominated the second half against fourteen man Parteen who lost a player before half time when defender Eanna Mulvihill was dismissed.

The winners were four points infront at the interval when the score was 0-11 to 0-7 but with the advantage of the extra man they had the better of the exchanges for much of the second half.

However, they found it difficult to pull away from their opponents andit was only in the closing stages that substitute Jack Hannan struck for their goal.

Cathal Ruane top scored for the Doora-Barefield outfit with 0-8 to his credit while Jack Hannan was their goalscorer on a day when Tom Hannon and Cian Barron each hit 0-3 as they overcame a Parteen side that had beaten a fancied Corofin outfit in the opening round.

COROFIN ARE BACK IN THE HUNT Corofin 0-24 Clonlara 1-11 Venue: Cratloe

A blistering start which saw them race into a six point lead laid the foundation for Corofin’s victory over Clonlara on Saturday.

Clonlara rallied and trailed by just two points at the first waterbreak but the winners dominated in the second half and they were

never headed.

Gearoid Cahill contributed 0-14 of his side’s tally, with nine coming from placed balls. His brother Diarmuid landed 0-4 while others to get in on the scoring were Kevin Keane, Michael Kelly, Killian McGroary and Killian O’Connor.

Conor Leen impressed in defence while Mark O’Loughlin, Fionnn Clancy and the Cahill brothers were others to impress for a side still without the injured Jamie Malone. At the end of a well contested tie between Ruan and Bodyke, Ruan had recorded their second successive victory in the title race which moves them closer to the knock out stage of the competition.

With Ruan man Francie O’Halloran in charge of Bodyke, it added to the interest in this tie.

Exchanges were even throughout the opening half and this is reflected in the scoreline which saw the teams locked together at 1-10 each at the interval. Jack Mc Donagh was the first half goalscorer for the winners while Jamie O’Donnell found the net for Bodyke.

Shane Punch had a goal for the winners early in the second half and he sealed victory shortly before the full time whistle with a powerful drive to the roof of the net. Bodyke’s second half goal came from Tiernan Slattery.

Ruan played the final twenty minutes with fourteen men following the dismissal of their full forward Aidan Lynch.

BLUES GET BACK ON TRACK DEFEATING OLD RIVALS CLARECASTLE Newmarket-on-Fergus 2-20 Clarecastle 3-12 Venue: Gurteen

Goals from Cathal Hayes and Shane Lynch put Newmarket-on-Fergus’ intermediate hurlers back on track as they recovered from their disappointing round one showing against Bodyke to give a more accurate reflection of their ability when overcoming Clarecastle on Sunday afternoon.

Five points was the final margin thanks to a late Sean Egan goal from a dropping 65. The corner forward was very lively over the hour and stood out as one of Clarecastle’s best hurlers. His strike put a more positive spin on the result for the Magpies who trailed for the entirety of the contest.

Hayes goaled at the start of the second quarter but his effort was immediately cancelled out at the other end when Dylan Broderick raised a green flag.

Substitute Eoin Dinan made an impact on proceedings and he hit home Clarecastle’s second goal on fifty two minutes reducing the distance to seven points.

Overall the better of the two teams, an inspirational score from corner back Alan O’Flanagan, his first in championship hurling, was one of the highlights of the encounter. Mark Delaney, James Liddy, Noel Frawley, Cathal Finucane and Cathal Hayes were most prominent for the winners who must now obtain a result against Ruan in the final round to progress to the quarter-finals.

For Clarecastle, Sean Egan was the standout performer with Mark Russell also impressing. The Magpies must now regroup to face Bodyke in the final round in their quest to retain their intermediate status.

THE longest final saga of 2021 at any grade was finally decided in Cusack Park on Monday evening when Clooney-Quin raided for an injury-time goal to secure the Under 15 Division 2 Football Championship honours over a gallant Cooraclare by 1-12 to 0-10.

Being Clooney-Quin’s fourth Under 15 decider in the space of only three weeks, it’s a testament to the talent and character of this group that they were able to bounce back from a disappointing defeat in last week’s Under 15B Hurling equivalent at the same venue to finish the season on the ultimate high.

Monday’s replay wasn’t as free-flowing as the drawn version but the stop-start format didn’t diminish the evenly-matched nature of the sides that ensured that there would be only a kick of the ball between them for the majority until Conor McCarthy’s clinching goal at the death.

Crucially however, despite six glorious goal chances for Cooraclare including back-to-back penalties at the turn of the final quarter, it was a defiant Clooney-Quin that somehow managed to keep their noses in front for the entire hour.

A powerful start certainly laid the foundations for victory as braces for Dylan White and the lively Jerry O’Connor could have been bolstered by goals at 0-7 to 0-2 by the 23rd minute. However, relentless midfielder Aidan Beirne’s shot to just clear the crossbar while goalkeeper Harry O’Gorman tipped a PJ McCarthy attempt over the bar.

Cooraclare settled just in time though, kicking the last four points, three from Shane O’Connell, to lessen the damage to just the minimum by the break.

It was all hands to the pump for the leaders on the restart as a resurgent Cooraclare went in search of a goal, only to find ‘keeper Euan McGowan in breathtaking form.

In a direct duel with Kevin Marrinan, McGowan best save came with his leg in the

35th minute before making a double stop from penalties after being adjudged to have moved off his line too early for the first save.

Defying logic, Clooney-Quin actually went in at the final water break with a two point cushion thanks to a late point from Conor McCarthy at 0-9 to 0-7, with captain Fionn O’Gara helping his goalkeeper on the resumption to prevent further Cooraclare shots from Simon Culligan and Marrinan.

With only a point between the sides by the hour mark, substitute Cormac Hale pointed with his first touch before Conor McCarthy expertly blocked down a clearance to kick to the net as Clooney-Quin finally shook off their obstinate opponents.

Clooney-Quin’s first Under 15 football title was matched by Wolfe Tones who make their Under 15C hurling breakthrough in Cusack Park last Thursday evening when producing a 15 point turnaround against Crusheen/Tubber at 4-13 to 1-11.

Unquestionably, full-forward Sean Murphy was the star of the show with a rich bounty of 3-8 from play as the Shannon side dominated the middle half of the final to stun the North Clare amalgamation by 4-10 to 0-04 and power 15 points clear.

All that after a James Costello-led Crusheen/Tubber had dominated the opening quarter but didn’t take full advantage of their opportunities and consequently only led by 0-5 to 0-1.

Wolfe Tones would have no such complaints as the water woke them from their early slumber with goals from Murphy (2) and Georgie Pyke and an impressive display from Niall Fitzgerald securing a 3-5 to 0-7 interval advantage.

The completion of Murphy’s hat-trick in the 49th minute would effectively put the result beyond any doubt at 4-11 to 0-08.

So while Crusheen/Tubber did rally, five late goal chances would only yield a Osgar Dunford major with the last puck of the game as Wolfe Tones soared to success.

Shannon Town A collected another brace of points when they accounted for their neighbours Shannon Hibs on Sunday morning.

Gary O’Connell, scorer of the winning goal against Lifford a week earlier, opened the scoring for town and this goal separated the sides at half time.

Early in the second half Shannon Hibs equalised through Town dominated the closing stages and had further goals from Colin Scanlan, T. J. O’Dwyer and Brian Monaghan.

Scanlan’s goal came from the penalty spot after the free had been awarded when Darren Griffin’s goal bound effort was handled in the area.

Three players were sent off in the second half in separate incidents, two from Shannon Hibs and one from the winners. Aidan Leahy was the Town player dismissed while Mikey Wall and Thomas McDade were the Hibs players who saw red, all on second yellow cards. Ennis Town followed up on their impressive first round win a week earlier when they accounted for Shannon Olympic A on Sunday Following a scoreless first half, Town dominated the second period scoring four times.

In the fifth minute, Paddy Bugler came close while at the other end Olympic’s Ray Quigley fired in a shot from the edge of the area that was saved by the winner’s keeper Andrew Skerritt.

Just before half time Paddy Bugler got clear but shot wide of Keane’s right hand post.

Early in the second half, Ennis Town’s Dean Hegarty had a shot saved by Kieran Keane while shortly afterwards Olympic’s Ray Quigley had a shot from 20yards that beat Skerritt, but hit the crossbar and went over.

Town went in front in the 55th minute when Paddy Bugler got up to head Dean Hegarty’s corner from the left to net.

Town increased their lead in the 75th minute when Declan Ensko headed Lee Clohessy’s cross to net.

Town made sure of the win in the 80th minute when David Keenan raced into the area and fired in a shot that beat Keane. The ball hit an upright and came back into play but Keenan reacted quickest and knocked rebound into the net.

They got their fourth shortly afterwards when Declan Ensko’s shot from the right side was deflected to the net by an Olympic defender for an OG. This was an impressive second

half performance by a young Ennis Town team, and will give them confidence for the rest of season. For Olympic they will need to get back on track quickly if they are to challenge for honours in this division.

by SEAMUS HAYES AT A MEETING of the Clare District Soccer League this week arrangements were made for the league cup finals which will take place over the October Bank holiday weekend at the county grounds, Frank Healy Park in Doora.

The premier final between Newmarket Celtic A and Avenue United will take place on Friday October 22 with kick off scheduled for 7:30pm.

On Saturday, the first division final will see Newmarket Celtic B face Shannon Town B at 5p.m while the second division final between Connolly Celtic and Rhine Rovers will kick off at 7.30p.m.

The third division final between Bunratty/Cratloe and Ennis Dons will take place on Sunday at 12 noon. after the break but again the Sporting defence stood solid. On 48 minutes, Mark Roche’s shot was well blocked by Tiernan Hogan and the resulting corner was headed over by an unmarked Cian O’Dea. The levelling goal came after a Ronan Kerins powerful shot was parried by Shannon and subsequently finished by Alan Roche.

Avenue took the lead after a ball was played over the top and substitute Gary Roche fired low beyond Shannon.

Darren McNamara’s low cross was not dealt with by Avenue’s Cuddy who subsequently brought down Sean McConigley in the box and McConigley sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to make it 2 all.

Avenue could’ve been ahead moments later when Gary Roche struck low with his left foot but was denied by Conor Shannon.

Price to continue as Clare Youths boss

RUAIRI Price is to continue as manager of the Clare Youths soccer side.

Price will have a third season in the role, he guided Clare to a semi-final position in his first campaign, a game which was never held following a ruling by the FAI. His second season was once again interrupted by COVID-19 causing no action to take place in the Inter-League Cup. A former goalkeeper with Shannon Olympic, Price received the backing of officers of the Clare District Soccer League (CDSL) at a meeting this week.

OLF in Clare is experiencing its greatest upswing in fortunes in recent memory, according to Padraig McGrath of P&M Golf Superstores, Clare’s largest golf shop.

P&M Golf strives to improve its offering each year and has most recently opened a new dedicated swing room as interest in the sport witnesses an explosion in interest nationwide. Proprietor Padraig – a PGA professional – says that despite being forced to close for four months earlier this year due to Covid-19 Government restrictions, sales have since increased an unprecedented amount. He also says that anecdotally, many clubs in the region have gained up to 200 members in the last year.

“You couldn’t have foreseen it but thankfully it did [happen] and that seems to have continued in the last few months,” he reveals. “The good thing in our industry is when people go back playing, they normally stick with it. Hopefully people realise going forward there is more to life than just working.” That last remark is a nod to the impact the global pandemic has had on our lives. Padraig is of the belief that many have had the opportunity to reflect on their work-life balance and sees more people reassessing their priorities, one being enjoying themselves more.

“I think the virus has changed people’s mentality, people are thinking, ‘I’m working too hard, too long hours, I’m working to live’ instead of living their best lives.

So it was the reset button that golf needed for everyone to realise that life is short.

“You hear a lot about people’s mental health these days and that’s something I’d love to get across, how good golf is for people’s mental health. You’re out in the open with nature and it’s one sport that I’ve found over the years, if you’ve had a bad day at work or anything at all, I go for a couple of holes and it’s like a reset button, you’re completely refreshed after it. It’s been a huge lift to a lot of people out there, you’re getting exercise and also you’re getting to meet people.”

Having been inspired by the golf superstores on a visit to the US, the

former accountant opened P&M in March 2004 aged 24 with his father and Martin Ward. “During lockdown we had the opportunity to build a new swing room. When somebody comes in for an appointment, the one thing I want to do is make them a better golfer. Sometimes that’s through lessons, sometimes it’s through changing golf clubs. Sometimes someone comes in for a fitting, I might end up doing a lesson because to improve that individual it might be 90 per cent from lesson

and 10 per cent from changing clubs. And also, if you give someone a lesson and improve their golf swing it will affect the clubs they’re about to buy. I’m just trying to get them to be the best golfer they can be so they can enjoy it to the maximum.”

Newbies to the sport can usually pick up a beginner box set from €399, which includes woods, irons, putter and the bag however a worldwide shortage exists due to demand, with Padraig noting these will come back into stock in time for Christmas.

“Customer satisfaction is our key, we’re constantly striving to be better. We do match online prices so nobody can accuse us of being overly expensive because we do price match and if we are slightly dearer than somebody else we’ll try and compete with their prices,” adds the Quin resident.

A second round heat success was recorded by the Killaloe owned Redzar Ruinart on Saturday night.

The second round heats of the Cambridgeshire was the main focus of attention at the Limerick Track on Saturday night last. Redzer Ruinart doesn’t find herself in front at traprise on too many occasions but she came through the bars of five on Saturday night to sweep the opening bend and take a three length lead into the home straight first time around. Jaytee Japan, after a sluggish start, began to motor from the second turn on and this quickly became a twodog affair as the duo developed a massive advantage over the chasing pack at the halfway point.

It was Redzar Ruinart owned by Killaloe’s Pat Reddan who maintained control however, and the daughter of Kinloch Brae and Redzer Ruby, a 4/1 market chance, got stronger as the race progressed to draw clear in the closing stages. Storming across the winning line, the clock was a blistering 41.55 as Jaytee Japan was seven and a half lengths back in second. Of the others, Tinnock Solis and Bling Bling Emma claimed the final two qualifying positions in third and fourth respectively.

There were two heats of the Limerick & Clare GOBA A5 525 down for decision on the night and the fastest was Varra Tilly (Scolari Me Daddy - Gulleen Glory) who scored a second career success for the Shanakyle syndicate of Parteen. Slowly into stride wearing the white jacket, Varra Tilly had to bide her time early doors but she nipped up the inside at the opening bend to go second down the back. From here the Joe Collins trained Varra Tilly stormed to the

front to score easily by over five lengths from Da Green Machine in second. The time was a good 29.07 for the 4/1 market chance.

The feature contest on last Friday nights card at Galway Greyhound Stadium was the A2 graded ninth contest over 550 yards where the winner was Midfield Deano trained by Rachel Wheeler, Wheeler was in the winners enclosure earlier after the A4 graded seventh contest as Bricks Trump put up a career best performance as he made all the running to register a third career success in a superb 28.77. The M-P-J. Syndicate of Mullagh owned runner showed good pace to bend to lead from Puck Out with Burren Solana in Third place along the inner as they rounded the opening two bends. Racing down the back Bricks Trump was striding out well in front as Puck Out continued to give chase but Bricks Trump was out in splendid isolation rounding the home bend as he raced to an impressive success.

The opening contest at the College Road venue on Saturday nights card was an A5 graded contest in which all six runners came away as one and were lined across the track as they raced towards the opening bend. At the bend the blue jacketed Glynnscrossbecky just about showed in front and turning down the back she led by two lengths form Ringroe Rally with Tuckeys Jet in third place. Racing along the back straight the Thomas Keane of Kilmihil owned daughter of Droopys Jet & Glynnscroostyler extended her advantage to over five lengths as she stayed in well to defeat Tuckeys Jet by three lengths in 29.40.
