NNIS native Diarmuid O’Connor has described the horrific conditions being endured in bushfire-hit areas of Australia, just days after he and his young family were evacuated during a family camping trip. In an exclusive interview with The Clare Echo, Diarmuid explained that his family went on a camping holiday to Batemans Bay but had to be evacuated from the area and return home to Sydney. “Traditionally bushfire season didn’t impact the bigger cities, this is the first time the major cities are starting to

En route home, the St Flannan’s College past pupil had time to reflect on what they had been through. He said, “When we were standing on the beach at Batemans Bay looking back into the town which was on fire everywhere with a variety of helicopters and a big Hercules plane flown in especially to fight the fires, then you realise how serious and how close it came to us. It was pretty scary for a couple of hours, we had a couple of uncomfortable days trying to get home.”

IN THE latest hit to West Clare’s economy, popular Kilkee restaurant Murphy Blacks is to close after 15 years in business. Owners Cillian Murphy and Mary Redmond confirmed they had made the difficult decision to close the eatery, citing the recent 4.5 per cent VAT increase as a pivotal reason in closing the premises.
