N THE region of 800 people have taken part in peaceful protests led by farmers at the grounds of Kepak in Tiermaclane for a week as they seek fairer prices for their produce. Over the last 12 months, the price of beef has dropped from €4.10 to €3.45 per kilo. Cree’s Martin Crowley was among those on duty and revealed the prices farmers are receiving for the meat “is no longer
paying the bills”. Crowley said he could not recommend either of his two sons to take up farming with the current prices being offered, he felt more could be done by the Department of Agriculture to assist them. Until they see progress, the farmers will not depart from their base at Kepak. “The way it is set up now we’re here for the long haul, we’ll see this out to the bitter end.”
