Tragedy hits with untimely death of Fionn O’Brien PÁRAIC MCMAHON

LL corners of Co Clare have been hit hard by the tragic death of twenty year old, Fionn O’Brien.

Fionn died on Monday after what members of the Clare division of An Garda Síochána described as a tragic accident.

He was surfing at Lough Donnell in Quilty when an alarm was raised shortly after 8am. The Shannon based helicopter R115 transferred him to University Hospital Limerick with CPR administered at the scene and also as he was airlifted to hospital.

He was sadly pronounced dead at UHL. Widespread condolences have been extended to the O’Brien family including his father Pat originally from Hermitage, his moth-

er Michelle an employee at O’Connell’s Medical Hall on Abbey St and Fionn’s siblings Conor, Niall and Saidhbh.

The O’Briens were on Tuesday described by Seán Lenihan as “stalwarts of the Roslevan community”.

From Knockanean, Fionn was a lifeguard with Clare County Council and played both hurling and football with St Josephs Doora/Barefield. In a statement, the club detailed that his name will always be mentioned in

glowing terms and his memory never forgotten, “Fionn was a very talented dual player with the club blessed with great skill and lightning speed. Even at such a young age he had already contributed hugely with the promise of a lot more to come”.

Honours won included U14 and U16 hurling titles and an U18 football title.

“His goal to draw the U16 hurling final in 2017 will always be spoken of and reminisced about. Only last Friday in what ultimately proved to be his last game for the club Fionn scored a goal for the Intermediate hurlers with the last play of the match”.

Heartfelt sympathies were expressed by Rice College where Fionn attended secondary school.

“We remember Fionn as a wonderful, smiling and talented young man and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him”.

On the rugby field, Fionn first joined Ennis RFC as a mini player and became an outstanding fullback for successful underage sides.

“He was a terrific talent and a great team player. He was a natural sportsman who excelled across several codes,” the club stated.

Tuesday’s meeting of the West Clare Municipal District was adjourned as a mark of respect to Fionn as proposed by Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF). Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) worked with Fionn during his pool lifeguard

“The loss of any staff member at any time is a tragedy whether they are in service or retired, this is a particularly sad loss,” Director of Service, Leonard Cleary commented.

A minute’s silence was held at Tuesday’s Ennis Municipal District. “He went out for a surf with three of his friends, four of them went out and

three went home. It should never happen. There was a huge sense of shock that something so tragic could happen to someone who was so proficient in the water,” Cllr Mary Howard (FG) reflected.

As a mark of respect, Lifeguard Stations on all Council beaches will be closed on Thursday until 2pm as a mark of respect with the Lifeguard Station at Bishops Quarter closed all day.

Only nine new ICU beds this year CRITICISM of the Government to build “sufficient hospital capacity” has been voiced by a Clare TD, writes Páraic McMahon.

Just nine beds additional beds have been provided across the entire country this year by the Irish Government.

During Leader’s Questions on Wednesday, Deputy Michael McNamara (IND) aired his frustration to better equip the nation’s health service and asked the Taoiseach what is being done to increase hospital capacity.

Of the 293 patients on trolleys on Monday, 60 of them were at University Hospital Limerick. "For all the billions that have been spent addressing the pandemic, the Government has failed to build sufficient hospital capacity,” the Clare TD stated.

Deputy McNamara commented, “We imported the ideas of lockdowns from China but in China they also built hospitals in fourteen days in response to COVID-19, the HSE’s capacity census last year showed

ICU capacity in Ireland increased from 255 to 280 in the nine months from April to December”.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin (FF) said funding of €52m was provided in Budget 2021 to allow for 66 permanent critical care beds to be put in place to bring permanent baseline capacity to 321 by the end of 2021. At the beginning of 2020 the figure was 255. The leader of Fianna Fáil said 41 of the 66 beds are now staffed and opened permanently.

McNamara replied, “I’ve no doubt that money is being spent, your Government is throwing money around like its confetti, our borrowings are entirely sustainable but above all the barometre is the number of people on trolleys and the number of people on trolleys is still at an all-time high, whatever you’re doing and money you’re spending is not having the impact that we need because there are 60 people on trolleys in Limerick last Monday, that is not good enough”.

VMS signs will help drivers

by PÁRAIC McMAHON QUOTATIONS are to be sourced for the potential of installing VMS signs on the Ennis and Lahinch roads to Ennistymon.

It follows a request from Cllr Shane Talty (FF) to secure the driver feedback signs.

“We are all guilty of speeding, one of them is a particular haunt for the GoSafe Van, drivers might learn their lesson from the sign rather than incurring an €80 fine,” the postmaster commented.

A suitable funding source will need to be identified to proceed with the installation, senior executive engineer Enda MacNamara flagged.

Meanwhile, Cllr Talty also requested the local authority to rise the road on the south side of the bridge at Grey Rock in Lisdoonvarna. “This Bridge regularly floods, and the road becomes impassable. If the dip is risen it will divert floods back towards adding lands,” he stated.

Teens walk to Cliffs of Moher

by PÁRAIC McMAHON TWO Irish teenagers completed a grueling five-day 250km walk from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher to raise almost €70,000 for a special needs school.

Scott Ward and his friend Derek O'Brien began their five-day trek in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, June 27, and walked more than 10 hours every day before finally reaching the famous tourist destination on Friday.

The pair had been talking about the idea for months and initially hoped to raise €500 for the Abacas Special School in Kilbarrack.

Scott's four-year-old cousin Lucas and Derek's six-year-old cousin Conor both attend the school and the two friends wanted to pay tribute to the "amazing" staff.

While Scott and Derek had been talking about the idea for several months, they had not been training for it and experienced difficulties during the first leg of the journey between Coolock in Dublin and Moyvalley in County Kildare.

MALE model living in Ennis is advocating for self-acceptance and to embrace the process of getting older as incidences of male botox are “on the rise” in Ireland.

Timmie Murphy (39) re-entered the world of modelling in his 30s following a short hiatus in his 20s, where he took the time to gain his confidence in a profession that “puts a lot of pressure on young men.” The former skincare worker has secured paid campaigns working with hotels and doing groom work.

“In modelling you are put forward solely based on your looks, with your pictures being sent from an agency to a particular brand. If you are rejected, you can’t take it to heart. Every brand has a particular look and you may not be what they are looking for,” the podcaster stated.

A societal shift in the perceived male body image standards are being shaped considerably by popular culture. Timmie believes that this is “having a massive effect.” An increase in male botox is a response to remote working and the rise in popularity of Instagram filters, he believed.

“We have all been working at home recently and have been seeing ourselves more clearly on work calls and meetings. Maybe we are noticing things that we didn’t before. With reality shows, we feel like we have to compete with this youthful image.

We need to filter out the Love Islands and the trap of Instagram. These are just popular shows, with normal people and they are killing us.”

On a personal note, the Ennis native who spent 15 years living in Dublin before the pandemic brought him home, has admitted that he “hasn’t completely ruled out male botox” and “is open to the possibility.” He is also a proponent for others to go for it, however, his main message for men is to push for self-acceptance, highlighting that “beauty comes from within.” Accepting who you are, whilst working on yourself builds confidence and it’s not all physical, it’s about being able to hold conversations with people from all walks of life. That is what’s attractive, he added.

“I’ve had men contacting me saying that they were getting botox for months but were afraid to tell their friends for fear of being slagged. People are bashing men left, right and centre. I get it all the time, but I let it over my head. It’s not as easy for other guys to do that. That’s one of the downfalls of our culture here in Ireland,” he concluded.

No prior notice for Clare pharmacies prior to vaccine administration ramping up

by CIAN O'BROIN PHARMACISTS in Clare expect people within the county will ‘shop around’ for vaccines as they admitted to being “snowed under”.

Selected pharmacies across the county on Monday began administering single shot vaccines to 18–34-year-olds, in a bid to scale up the vaccination programme in the race against the Delta variant.

This accelerated vaccine opportunity comes in the form of Janssen for 18-34-yearolds and is available in 18 pharmacies in Clare.

Pharmacies across the country cited the concern of matching this demand, as phones rang off the hook on Friday morning following the announcement. Varden’s Pharmacy in Newmarket-On-Fergus admitted that they were “snowed under” and “taken a bit by surprise” as they didn’t have any advanced

warning from the Government or HSE. Staff worked tirelessly to create lists of callers that would match them with a vaccine in the next week.

“Every case is different. Everyone has to check what medicines or vaccines they can take. We will do a risk assessment of people, particularly this age group that are more concerned.

Then we must get their consent, which is a big issue,” supervising pharmacist Tom Taffe

stated.

He conceded that although they have a starter supply, like many, they are not fully equipped to meet “the current demand that has been presented to us this afternoon and this morning.”

He added that people will shop around for a vaccine in different pharmacies, with those having a bigger supply concerned with a wastage issue, particularly with the current supply "that has an expiry date in September”.

‘A total scam’ - High Court ruling for encampment ignored PÁRAIC MCMAHON

AILURE of residents of an Ennis illegal encampment to adhere to High Court rulings has been labelled “a total scam”.

Residents of an illegal encampment on the Kilrush Rd in Ennis have not complied with a notice to vacate the site. In November, the Court of Appeals supported a High Court decision to give Clare County Council powers to evict tenants of an illegal encampment in Ashline which has been in place since August 2018.

However officials within Clare County Council have advised the High Court of the non-compliance. Local authority officials “are waiting on a further court decision to take action to enforce the High Court Order. The Housing department continue to work with the households approved for social

housing support to assist in securing accommodation,” senior executive engineer Siobhán McNulty stated.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the Ennis Municipal District, Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) commented, “It is incredible the complete disregard given by residents of the encampment of the law and our local authority”. She claimed that when the notice was erected by the Council at the site, it was taken down within the space of an hour.

Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Ann Norton (IND) lamented the fact that the issue was becoming continuous, “they have defied the laws again”.

She added, “It has already gone to the High Court, you would have to question if it could go any further” and said houses had been allocated and offered to the persons involved.

There is a “fear factor” associated with the encampment, Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) claimed. “It is very important the wider public know it is not being ignored by Clare County Council”.

Extra dog poo bins requested

by PÁRAIC McMAHON PROVISION of extra “doggie poo bins” has been requested for Lisdoonvarna.

While acknowledging the importance of personal responsibility, Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) called on Clare County Council to provide “doggie poo bins in and around the town of Lisdoonvarna”.

Additional signage and enforcement is also needed across the West Clare Municipal District as personnel and their canines flouting the regulations are “destroying pavements and walkways”.

Public campaigns have been launched in relation to dog fouling, senior executive engineer in the environment section of the Council, Brendan Flynn stated. Social media awareness campaigns will also continue. “These campaigns will also be promoted through our Greener Clare programme and in print in The Clare Echo’s weekly green page. Dog poo can be bagged and put in any public waste bin or taken home of and disposed of in any waste bin.

Personal responsibility of owners to step up were reinforced by Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF). “The best PR and marketing is when someone gets fined and the word gets around that people are getting fined. There is no consequences at the moment for not picking up after your dog or yourself ”.

Gort bio gas saga continues The saga in a South-Galway town continues as residents were recently informed of a further delay on a decision to build a biogas plant 800m from the town square, writes Cian O’Broin.

In a statement to The Clare Echo, the Gort Bio-Gas Concern Group expressed a “feeling of being left in the dark again” in response to a letter from An Bord Pleanala (ABP) on the decision to further delay the appeal which had an original date of April 30, which was later postponed to a final date of June 24.

Ireland’s national independent planning body said that “priority consideration is being given to the case”.

Set up in opposition to Sustainable Bio-Energy Limited who applied for planning permission for a bio-gas plant on a 25-acre site outside the town boundaries three years ago, the Bio-Gas Concern Group insisted Galway County Council’s decision to refuse planning should be upheld.

“The people of Gort are more and more frustrated that there’s still no relief to this serious threat to the town and it’s environment.

The latest information from ABP provides no new decision date leaving the people of south Galway in the dark,” the statement added.

AMAGE to vehicles is occurring due to “dangerous stones” on the roadside verge of the L3148 which is a kilometre from the village of Quin.

An appeal for works to be carried on the road was issued by Cllr Alan O’Callaghan (FF) who highlighted the instances where motorists were put in danger due to the stones.

Senior executive engineer in the Killaloe Municipal District, Niamh Madden explained, “The stones at this location are part of a retaining stone boundary wall. The Killaloe Municipal District will investigate the most appropriate course of action to deal with this matter”.

O’Callaghan flagged that the road is just passed the entrance to Ballykilty Manor, a house built in 1760 that was formerly a small hotel business which was was acquired with €25m plans to turn it into a five-star complex until the company involved, Atlantis Developments, sunk.

Yellow markings have been painted on the stones, he added. “It is very tight and needs addressing sooner rather than later. It does need some bit of plan”. Several Quin residents use this as a walking route. “It is a huge problem and is

causing a lot of grief to people especially with loose tyres,” the publican stated.

When stones on the side of a road are being painted “there is really a danger,” Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) believed.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the Killaloe MD, senior engineer Declan Flanagan admitted that the problem was “a historic one” and was in-

herited as part of the boundary changes following the 2019 local elections.

With the existing stone boundary wall, there is a three foot drop “so there is a bit of work to be done,” he outlined. “We will have to order some road narrow signage to give motorists some advice. Long-term, we will have to engage with the landowner for a more permanent solution”.

EVERAL changes are to be implemented across the Killaloe Diocese from next month regarding the priests in each parish.

Currently, one third of the 58 parishes in the Killaloe Diocese are now without a resident priest under the age of 75.

Bishop Fintan Monahan who announced the Killaloe Diocesan Appointments for 2021 in recent days also expressed gratitude to a number of priests who have opted to continue ministering beyond the retirement age of 75.

Restructuring of the Cronan Pastoral Area is to take place next year.

Tulla native Fr Ger Nash’s move to become Bishop of Ferns is included in the list of appointments, he had been Diocesan Secretary

and Director of Pastoral Planning.

Former President of St Flannan’s College, Fr Brendan Moloney is to retire as co parish priest in the Odhrán Pastoral Area but will continue to reside in the Silvermines.

Fr John Bane is to move from Broadford where he was co parish priest in the Ceantar na Lochanna Pastoral Area and will retire to Ennis.

Noted in hurling circles for his contribution to the coaching in West Clare, Fr Peter O’Loughlin is to retire as co parish priest in Kilmihil but he will remain on as assistant pastor.

Both he and Fr Francis Xavier Kochuveettil, along with duties in Shannon are to assist in the pastoral area to give Fr Michael Collins in Newmarket-on-Fergus scope for pastoral planning and to help also in Sixmilebridge.

Feakle remembers Jim Grogan A PÁRAIC MCMAHON

POIGNANT ceremony was held by the East Clare Memorial Committee in the townland of Core, Feakle last Tuesday to commemorate the last victim of the Irish War of Independence in the county, Jim ‘Birdie’ Grogan.

Approximately 30 local people attended the ceremony which marked the death 100 years ago of 44 year-old Jim Grogan, who was shot dead by British forces, while he was making his way to mass in the Feakle area. Grogan has been largely forgotten and the Committee were determined that they shone a light on his death and on his life.

According to historian, Dr Tomás Mac Conmara, who is secretary of the East Clare Memorial Committee and who has

researched the story over many years, Jim Grogan was an entirely innocent victim of British aggression. “The British military implied in their reporting of the incident that because Jim Grogan was shot close to where a trench had been dug to impede their forces, that he was a dangerous figure. In fact, Grogan was entirely unarmed and was not of a capable disposition to do harm to anybody. Local reports also strongly indicate that he had his arms raised when he was shot dead. The solider who shot him, was exonerated fully”.

The Committee has been responsible for the commemoration of events and people related to the War of Independence for many decades. Committee Chairman, Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) told The Clare Echo that while the pandemic has restricted the levels of commemoration, the group remained determined to shine a light on events in the period, like the death of Jim Grogan.

He referenced the success of their commemoration for the

Scariff Martyrs held in November in both Scariff and Killaloe. “We have had a very strong online presence which we have used to combat the restrictions resulting from Covid-19. We recently posted material about the Currakyle ambush in my own area and intend to mark the site later in the year when the opportunity to do so are more suitable”.

The Committee arranged for Timmy Treacy, the only surviving relative of Jim Grogan, to lay a wreath at the site of his shooting. The gathering was addressed

by Cllr. Hayes, Mac Conmara and Treacy, before musical laments were played by Maebh McCall, granddaughter of Timmy Treacy and Kilanena musician Aoife Hayes. At the commemoration, Cllr Hayes announced that they will erect a permanent memorial at the site of Grogan’s death later this year.

Tarmacadam, drainpipes, footpaths, grass cutting and public lighting were among the items included in the correspondence from householders in the Moutshannon Estate. Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) also raised the matter on their behalf at a meeting of the West Clare Municipal District and noted that the majority of residents were retired.

Senior engineer Alan Kennelly acknowledged that the tarmacadam on the estate dates back to the time of its development and construction. The issues of drainpipes and gullies are related, he said, “Long-term

settlement has changed drainage paths away from installed gullies. The most effective solution is to excavate the existing and re-lay new tarmacadam in the estate, whilst moving or lowering gullies as necessary.

However, Clare County Council does not have the funding to carry out these works at present”.

Footpath improvement works will be completed in Labasheeda this year, at this stage Mountshannon Estate will be viewed. Grass cutting is not carried out by the local authority in West Clare, Kennelly stated. The public lighting issues have been rectified, he confirmed.

Keating encouraged Kennelly to take inspiration from his fellow Kerry native, John B. Keane, “you’ll have to do your almighty best on this one,” he quipped.

Opposition group confident wind farm plans will be rejected

EMBERS of a group opposed to a West Clare wind farm are confident Clare County Council will not give the green light to the development Strong local opposition has been evident to the application from Mid Clare Renewable Energy Windfarm Ltd for a 170-metre tall, 10-turbine wind farm at Cahermurphy, near Kilmihil which was lodged in November.

Of the 115 submissions, 104 submissions to the request for further information while 11 were in favour including two local GAA clubs. According to Mid Clare Renewable Energy Windfarm Ltd, the development will positively benefit the community’s environment, and contribute around €350,000 in rates to Clare County Council, along with establishing a Community Benefit Fund.

Clare TD, Violet Anne Wynne (SF), Senator Roisin Garvey (GP), Senator Timmy Dooley (FF) have objected to the development. Shannon representatives, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) and Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) also made submissions against the plans as did Cllr Susan Craw-

ford (GP), Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF), Cllr Ian Lynch (IND), Cllr PJ Kelly (FF) and Cllr Shane Talty (FF).

The Cahermurphy 2 Opposition Group, composed of over 100 residents, are confident that Clare County Council will comprehensively turn down the application. “These enormous industrial turbines would be 50m higher than the existing turbines on Mt. Callan and the 3 existing turbines in Cahermurphy,” a spokesperson commented.

Members of the opposition group have said the site is “entirely unsuitable for an industrial development of this kind. The area is already saturated with wind turbines.

“At present, there are 107 operational industrial wind turbines within a 12k radius of Cahermurphy, with planning permission granted for another 30”.

Concern was voiced by the Group on the development of wind farms in West Clare “at an alarming rate without due regard for habitats and local homeowners. The destruction of large swathes of bogland and replacement with thousands of tonnes of concrete will contribute to flooding, potential landslides, contamination of local waterways and destruction of rich local biodiversity”.

A FORMER Clare TD has said protests will need to be held over the controversial decision by James Owens during Sunday’s Munster senior hurling semi-final, writes Páraic McMahon.

James Breen served as an Independent TD for Clare from 2002 to 2007, on Sunday he was among the 3000 supporters at the LIT Gaelic Grounds where Tipperary sealed their place in the provincial decider at the expense of Clare.

Much of the commentary

in the aftermath of the contest has focused on the second half decision of referee James Owens to sin bin Aidan McCarthy and award a penalty to Tipperary for a challenge on Jake Morris.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Breen said the County Board and clubs must “stand up and demand an investigation into the appointment of referees”.

A lifelong member of the GAA, he believed, “there are too many hangers-on in the GAA”.

“We need to go out and protest at the offices of Munster GAA. Offaly protested in 1998 and they done us out of an All-Ireland because of it”.

Clare’s Central Council and Munster Council representatives are not making enough noise, the Kilnamona man claimed, “We need someone like Niall Romer to rattle a few cages. There’s people there who’s sell by date has gone, they have nothing to contribute and their sell by date is gone”.

Romer contested the position of Vice Chairman at the Clare GAA Convention last year and received 16 votes with Kieran Keating elected to the role with the backing of 92 delegates.

“There’s always another time, he is a very outspoken man, it is people like him that we want and not to be hiding behind four course meals”, In 1992, Breen was Clare’s delegate to the Munster Council while he held the position of Kilnamona County Board Delegate for 24 years up until 1995.

“Our County Board will have to stand up and defend our players, will our representatives stand up and hold up the meeting to demand answers but they won’t do it because they haven’t the courage or the guts to do it”.

UNDREDS more homes in Clare than what is known are believed to be affected by pyrite and defective blocks.

Action Group, Dr Martina Cleary expressed her fear that the figure of homes in the county is much higher than the 52 that have come forward to date. The oldest house in Clare known to have pyrite was built in 1984, with the newest constructed in 2011.

Several homeowners have opted to stay quiet after discovering their home had defective blocks which is damaging the overall potential of Clare to be included in a potential redress scheme. She is of the view that

“hundreds if not thousands” of homes in the county are affected.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Martina explained, “It is very important for people that might suspect they have it and you might be trying to cover it up, get by and hope the action group will get the grant, you need to get your house tested, come forward and make yourself known and join us in whichever form you want to, you need to be counted because at the end of the day the Minister and the Government are facing a massive redress on this. 10,000 people have come out in Mayo and Donegal, they are counting 10,000, the €1.5bn they are talking about is for Mayo and Donegal, I’m asked constantly how many people are in the group constantly by politicians and the Council, I know there is 52 but what happens if there is 552, if they give grants they will give it to Clare based on what they know so don’t know expect to get a grant by sitting there and pretending it is not happening to you”.

Issues at Martina’s Crusheen home first came to light in the autumn of 2019 with the weather facing gable wall the first area impacted. “It started with a horizontal crack but then there were vertical cracks and they spread very quickly. Once the workman tapped into the plaster and the block disintegrated and was the wrong colour which they call a blue block,” she recalled. Since then, she has had to invest €7000 in the property to deal with the numerous cracks that have appeared.

Initially the first sign was a hairline crack under a window. “Check the weather facing walls first, the walls that get the worst of the rain, if you are seeing large horizontal cracks they will branch off from that, you might think it is only a hairline crack, it is what is an indicator of what is going on with the blocks on the inside, if it is this don’t leave it because the more rain, air and moisture that is getting in, the worse it will get and the faster your house is going to go, you have to get an IS465 registered engineer to look at it first because there is a lot of people who have gone

Five Clare properties located in all corners of the county and of different ages underwent core testing by Clare County Council, all of which were diagnosed as stage four “which is demolition”, the cost of the testing ranges from €5000 to €7000. “It is impossible to slow it down, the house is literally dissolving like a disprin. I can hear it inside, when I’m sitting in the room now after two days of heavy rain, when it starts drying out it’s like delph breaking, you hear this shattering, first I heard it once or twice in the day, now it is four or five times. They call them ‘weetabix blocks’, once it starts it accelerates”.

Efforts to include Clare in a €1bn mica and pyrite redress scheme will continue with Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien (FF) set to visit the county this month.

O CLARE has lost one its finest musicians, an excellent photographer and an absolute gentleman all in one swoop following the death of Martin Connolly.

Martin died peacefully on Friday at University Hospital Galway after a hard-fought two year battle with illness.

Born in Killaloe to the famed Connolly musical family, music was a major part of everyday life for Martin. Both of his parents were musicians, his father Mick played flute and stepdanced in the old traditional style while his mother Lena played piano and accordion.

His brothers also maintained this tradition with Michael playing the piano and also serving as the choirmaster and organist at St Flannan’s Church in Killaloe, he sadly died less than three weeks ago. Seamus played the fiddle and has been honoured with multiple accolades including National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2013 which is the highest honour the US government can grant to a traditional artist, he also taught at Boston College for over a quarter century where he founded the Gaelic Roots Summer School and Festival on campus, he won the All-Ireland fiddle championship ten times, a feat unequaled by any other musician. Their eldest sibling Marie though not a musician savoured their talents and was one of their biggest supporters.

Music sessions were commonplace in the Connolly house with the likes of Joe Burke, Paddy O’Brien and the Lennons, Charlie and Ben among the regular visitors.

Though the youngest of the Connolly clan, Martin was held in the highest of regard for his talents as a musician, an accordion maker and an accordion teacher. He won All-Ireland titles at all levels and was viewed as one of the top accordion players in the country.

He travelled all over the world performing and teaching music. In 1995 he had the honour of representing Ireland at the Carrefour Mondial de L'Accordéon, World Accordion Festival in Quebec, Canada and shared the stage with names like Valentino Lorenzetti from Italy, Tony Russo from Switzerland, Francois Heim from France and Stephane Landray from Quebec, Canada.

Two recordings of his music have been released, ‘The Fort of Kincora’ was issued as an

LP and was re-launched on CD at the 2014 Fleadh Nua, ‘Back to Brooklin’ was released in 1999 in memory of his late wife, the renowned pianist and fiddle player from New York, Maureen Glynn Connolly who died from cancer in 1998. Subsequent to Maureen’s death, Martin fell in love with Pauline and they were happily married in Ennis.

During a special lunchtime concert during the 2016 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Ennis, Martin performed alongside his brother Seamus and son Damien at glór, it was the first time the trio played on stage together.

For over twenty five years, he taught music on a weekly basis from his residence in Ennis. His reputation in the traditional music world saw him regarded as the top accordion teacher in Ireland, the proof being the amount of awards claimed by his students each year. Martin was a tutor at Scoil Éigse when the Fleadhanna were last held in Clare, back in 2016 and 2017.

From an early age, Martin was interested in the mechanics of the accordion. He set up his own tuning and repair business after learning most of the skills from Nils Nielson who was regarded by many as being "the only one to tune a box”. Nielson was a former employee of the now defunct Paolo Soprani company and was exclusive tuner to the world leading accordionist Toralf Tollefson.

It is said that there was nothing Nils didn't know about the accordion and his willingness to divulge many of his secrets to Martin were an invaluable help in bringing the Kincora Accordion to what it it became.

After returning from Quebec in 1995 Martin began designing and making his first accordion which was completed in March 1996. A year later the Kincora was awarded 1st prize in the Clare enterprise exhibition. His handmade accordions were the first choice for many musicians with strong demand for the Kincora Accordion from across the globe.

Such was the popularity and esteem of Martin’s work that this writer was regularly contacted over the past two years by musicians from all various corners of the globe to enquire about the legend behind the world-famous Kincora Accordion.

Behind the camera, Martin was just as gifted.

He was the first sports photographer to work with The Clare Echo followings its establishment in 2017 and his work greatly enhanced the quality of the paper as he superbly captured the action from behind the lens. As Clare reached the All-Ireland hurling semi-finals in 2018 and came within the width of a post of sealing a place in the All-Ireland decider, Martin’s photo-

‘A class act’ - Tributes paid to Martin Connolly BEAUTIFUL music aptly played a prominent role at the funeral mass of Martin Connolly on Monday where he was remembered as “a class act”, writes Praic McMahon.

Speaking at Monday’s mass, Fr Tom Ryan pointed out that many people sometimes regard photographers as a nuisance but flagged the role they play in “trying to record the moment” and how at times of grieving the public often turn to

images to reflect.

Songwriter and musician Oliver O’Connell said of Martin’s two albums, he remarked, “Those two CDs are absolute classics in the traditional music world, they are treasures” and called him “a class act”.

Although he held a number of posts and had a wide range of hobbies, Karl said that his father would go into any project “in the

finest detail” whether it was reading rulebooks during his time as a referee or by trying to learn Italian when learning how to fix accordions. “I can’t put into words what Dad means to me, I won’t even try, Dad knows and that’s what matters to me”.

Memories of the “powerful” music scene created by Martin in Killaloe were recalled by his son Damien as he addressed the con-

gregation. In 1991, Martin taught Damien how to play the accordion, by the age of 17 he had two All-Ireland titles won. “The attention I got from my father made me, I was learning music to hear my father’s compliments”.

In 1998, Martin’s wife Maureen died from cancer which left him “utterly devastated”, Damien admitted. “It took him a long time to get past it” and resulted in him step-

ping away from playing the accordion, a move he was content with.

He was fortunate to meet Pauline who “he absolutely loved,” Damien added as he voiced his admiration for how his father fought so hard against illness and also kept his humour and his trademark glint in the eye. “I used to pray when I was younger that I would be like him because I loved him so much,” he added.

HANNON, Kilrush and Ennis are ideally placed for an urban e-scooter rental scheme trial, a Clare TD has told the Minister for Transport.

Co Clare’s potential as a trial spot for the scheme was flagged by Cathal Crowe TD (FF) at a meeting of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communication Networks.

Equivalent schemes for pedal bikes already exist in

other counties and discussions regarding e-scooters are now underway.

At the meeting, the Meelick native suggested Clare as a pilot area to trial e-scooters to the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan (GP).

He also said that an age limit on who can use them and the legal requirement to wear a helmet be introduced.

Crowe stated, “As a member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, I’ve been engaging with Ford Ireland on a continuous basis over the last number of weeks.

They have developed an e-scooter which would operate similar to urban bikes that

operate in Irish cities, where one can be subscribed to the service on an annual basis or tap in and out to use the bikes on an ad-hoc basis.

Ford Ireland is planning on rolling out these scooters on a similar basis so that people can rent these for a short period before returning them to another docking station.

“E-scooters are proving to be more than a fad. They first appeared in recent years and I remember stopping in my tracks the first time I saw one pass me on the road. They’re not just being used by kids and teenagers – many people are now using them to get to and from work,” he added.

NNIS’ much maligned Market Building cannot be used an outdoor concert venue by glór because it has walls.

Initially approved by the now defunct Ennis Town Council, the €500,000 Market Building was part of a €1.75m redevelopment.

In a proposal before the Ennis Municipal District this week, Cllr Mark Nestor (FF) requested Clare County Council and glór to “arrange a series of outdoor concerts, to be held in the Market building at times that would not interfere with trading in the area”.

Fáilte Ireland’s definition of what is deemed to be a safe out-

door space has prohibited glór from using the Market Building.

The fact that the Market Building has walls and is officially designated as an indoor space despite being primarily used as a car park

prohibits its use as an outdoor venue.

Clare Arts Officer, Siobhán Mulcahy outlined that they are currently working with Fidget Feet Irish Aerial Dance Compa-

ny to provide entertainment in Ennis over the summer months, “if suitable to their needs we will give consideration to the Market Building.

The Arts Office is also operating the Outdoor Live Music Local Performance Scheme countywide, including in Ennis. We are currently assessing the applications under this scheme and again, will give due consideration to use of the Market building, subject to public health guidelines and technical requirements of the applicants”.

Director of glór, Orla Flanagan in a written response detailed that two drive in dance performances were staged in the glór car park in June with a production by the Gate Theatre and Mikel Murfi on a truck also in the car park at Glór planned for the end of July.

Biodiversity causing big problem

A BID to promote biodiversity in Ennis has caused “a huge problem” in public spaces, a county councillor has flagged.

“Many residents committees and Tidy Towns groups now have a huge problem with the unkept appearance of our public spaces” due to later grass cutting dates to promote biodiversity, Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) raised at a recent meeting.

Eamon O’Dea, senior executive officer outlined, “The grass cutting contractor was required to delay the initial grass cut and reduce the grass height in a specified way as set out in the Council’s Biodiversity Policy. There are locations where this has left untidy cut grass which would normally be macerated in further grass cutting and become less visible”.

Children are unable to play hurling “as easily as they would have” in certain areas because of the grass, Murphy highlighted.

Banning single use plastics will make Clare beaches cleaner

LARE beaches and seas can expect to become cleaner as single use plastic items are banned in Ireland.

The EU’s Single Use Plastic (SUP) Directive has now come into force and it delivers on the EU’s plastic strategy. Any countries that do not respect these obligations will be fined, items made from expanded polystyrene are no longer permitted to be sold in the EU. Single-use plastics are produced to be used once and as they are used for such a short time they are more likely to be thrown away on beaches and in seas.

Fishing gear and the ten most commonly found single-use plastic items on European beaches represents 70 percent of all marine litter in the EU. Specific targets for the Directive include a 77% separate collection target for plastic bottles by 2025 and increasing to 90% by 2029.

Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune (FG) believed the EU rules would reduce the impact of certain plastic products on the en-

vironment and promote the transition to a circular economy.

Clune stated, “Single use plastics can cause a lot of damage to the environment.

These products are used once and then thrown away and are likely then to end up in our seas causing a lot of damage. I welcome the ban on these items and the EU is aiming to become a forerunner in the global fight against marine litter and plastic pollution”.

There are also plans in the longer term for items such as balloons, plastic bags and crisp packets and the Directive has asked producers to contribute to awareness-raising and clean-up actions and introduce new labelling on the environmental impact of the product and recycling options for consumers.

New labelling requirements for sanitary towels and wet wipes are also planned, to inform consumers on the environmental impact of the product and how to dispose of it properly. These will be rolled out over the coming years.

Items to be addressed in the Directive include, cotton bud sticks, cutlery, plates, straws and stirrers, balloons and sticks for balloons, food containers, cups for beverages, beverage containers, cigarette butts, plastic bag, packets and wrappers, wet wipes and sanitary items.

LARE country music singer Clodagh Lawlor is to begin presenting a weekend music show on Live95 FM this Saturday.

Clodagh’s first show of ‘The Weekend’ will be broadcast this Saturday from 2 to 5:30pm on the Limerick radio station which she is going to present for the remainder of the summer.

Show’s search for a country music star and is regarded as one of the rising stars in the industry.

Last September, she enrolled in the Today FM School of Radio. “I wanted to try and give myself the best shot of getting into the radio business. It was such an incredible course as you were getting lectures from people who are actually on the radio scene. I got to know Fergal D’Arcy very well and he has been incredible to me, he is always at the end of the phone to call and available to ask for advice and I’m very lucky to have him as a friend”.

est but Clodagh admitted that getting into broadcasting on radio and television has always been a target. “I was lucky I had already got my own TV show called Clodagh’s Country mix on Sky TV so I’ve been dipping my toes into a lot of TV work over the past couple of years since I began my career but I always wanted to get into radio and now I have”.

After completing the Today FM course spearheaded by Patrick Haughey, she was keen to make inroads in the world of radio. “I was at home one evening and was thinking about where I wanted to go in life having one of them days as we all can have but I said ‘ Clodagh you’ve nothing to lose message a few producers and see if there is any slots available for new radio presenters’ and that I did. I suppose it’s true when they say no one will come knocking on my door so I just have to go knocking on theirs and with a bit of luck, neck and perseverance here I am”.

She added, “My whole career so far I have been super lucky with the opportunities that have come my way.

Preparation has met opportunity with this new venture I’m going on and I only hope it’s the start of many more. I would love as you know to have my own country music radio show one day but I’ll keep working and hopefully someday you’ll be seeing that in headlines. It’s only the beginning for me I hope but super grateful for everything so far”.

Gerry was a founding member of the Ennis Camera Club, since his death the club have held an annual competition for landscape photographs.

This year, Sheamus O’Donoghue from

Shannon Camera Club and the Irish Photographic Federation judged the competition.

Kate, a student at Colaiste Mhuire was selected as the winner of the competition and was also named as the most improved photographer of the year.

Newly elected chairperson of the Ennis Camera Club, Mike Reen presented Kate with the trophy at The Old Ground Hotel alongside outgoing chair Chris Copley.

T

HE past year and a half has taught us that the hands of people are important. So many people have lived the past year without the touch of family and friends. I know that I have missed the hand shake, the hug and the physical contact of family, friends, neighbours, colleagues and even strangers.

Our Helpers

Reaching our goals is never easy; that is why we need God and others by our side. While some people forget those who helped them succeed, many remember and recognize their helpers. My partners in life are the Lord, my wife, my family and some amazing friends, neighbours and colleagues and I am so grateful to God for each of them, for I know my life would be nothing without them.

I have also had an army of people who lifted me up in the best and worst of times. Striving to reach our dreams and prayers is never easy; that is why we need God and others by our side for no one truly makes it alone.

Nowadays it is fashionable to think of oneself first. In relationships, we are urged to make others happy by making ourselves happy.

Our careers, our interests and our personal ambitions are a priority.

With self-centeredness the norm, selfless ideas no longer command widespread lip service, let alone respect. We view sacrifice as a sign of weakness. Yet sacrifice remains central to human evolution. No matter where we are or what we are doing, we have the choice of dedicating our efforts to helping others or exalting ourselves.

The Praying Hands

Back in the 15th century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with 18 children. In order to keep food on the table, the father, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost 16 hours a day at his trade and any other paying chore he could find. Despite their seemingly hopeless conditions, two of Albrecht Durer Snr children had a dream; they wanted to pursue their talent for Art. However, they knew their father could never afford to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the academy. After many discussions, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his

studies, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by labouring in the mines.

They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. His brother Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation.

Albrecht’s etchings, his woodcuts, and his oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works. When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht’s triumphant homecoming.

After a memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition.

His closing words were, ‘And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn.

Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you.’ All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his face, shaking his lowered head from side to side.

‘No ... no ... no,’ he sobbed. Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks.

He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved. Holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, ‘No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me.

Look what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother ... for me, it is too late.’

More than 450 years have passed.

By now, Albrecht Durer’s hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver point sketches, water-colours, charcoals, woodcuts and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world. Of course, most of us are only familiar with one of Albrecht Durer’s works. Indeed, many of us will have a reproduction of it hanging in our homes or offices.

To pay homage to Albert for all he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer

painstakingly drew his brother’s abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward.

He called his powerful drawing simply ‘Hands’, but it has become popularly known as ‘The Praying Hands’ and if you are familiar in any way with them or the picture of them, you will notice that these are not supple hands.

The knuckles are gnarled, one small finger is quite hooked, and the palms are no longer able to clamp together. But the praying hands are at the level of the heart, bearing the landscape of life, and pointing towards heaven. The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look. Let it be your reminder, if you still need one, that no one – and I mean no one – – ever makes it alone!

Allow Your Own Inner Light to Guide You

There comes a time when you must stand alone. You must feel confident enough within yourself to follow your own dreams. You must be willing to make sacrifices.

You must be capable of changing and rearranging your priorities so that your final goal can be achieved.

Sometimes, familiarity and comfort need to be challenged. There are times when you must take a few extra chances and create your own realities.

Be strong enough to at least try to make your life better. Be confident enough that you won't settle for a compromise just to get by. Appreciate yourself by allowing yourself the opportunities to grow, develop, and find your true sense of purpose in this life. Don't stand in someone else's shadow when it's your sunlight that should lead the way.

Thought for the week

As your thought for this week, always remember that happiness comes from when you let go of what has gone, be grateful for what you have achieved and for those who help you on your life's journey, look forward to what is coming next, be you and live life in the present. This week, say thanks to the people who get you where you're going. You're not doing it alone.

Let me finish with this refreshing prayer poem reminder by Maya Angelou called "Touched by an Angel" that I love to pray but with it comes the responsibility of gratitude and love. "We, unaccustomed to courage, exiles from delight, live coiled in shells of loneliness until love leaves its high holy temple and comes into our sight to liberate us into life.

Love arrives and in its train come ecstasies, old memories of pleasure, ancient histories of pain. Yet if we are bold, love strikes away the chains of fear from our souls. We are weaned from our timidity and In the flush of love's light we dare be brave.

And suddenly we see that love costs all we are and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free. Amen".

Ruan infrastructure improvements ongoing

lDESIGN: Ruan village AN APPLICATION to get improved public lighting in Ruan has been unsuccessful, Clare County Council have confirmed while attempts to install a pedestrian crossing are ongoing, writes Páraic McMahon.

Attempts to bring a pedestrian crossing to the village of Ruan are ongoing with a preliminary design completed, consultation with local residents and Clare County Council is to take place before this can proceed further while a funding source needs to be identified, senior engineer Enda MacNamara outlined.

Clare TD, Michael McNamara (IND) previously highlighted the need for traffic calming measures in the village while Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) also brought the matter before a recent sitting of the West Clare Municipal District which was seconded by Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG).

Killeen stated, “In the past

year or two, Ruan has got a new shop, it has upgraded the car parking space by the school, there are lots of people walking to the GAA pitch and the school and Dromore Woods”.

Both the school and GAA pitch are “500m from the village,” the Corofin representative added.

“In more recent years we’ve had motorways and Google is suggesting to people to join the motorway in Barefield which has increased traffic”.

A pedestrian crossing by the XL shop was deemed as the most appropriate location by the former primary school principal.

Public lighting is also needed, he added. MacNamara in response detailed that an application for public lighting in Ruan was made by the local authority, “it didn’t get across the line but that is not to say it won’t be successful next year”.

Council asking 'posh lady' to redirect traffic

TAFF from Clare County Council’s IT department are in communication with Google on attempts to redirect road users to more suitable routes in rural parts of the countywrites Páraic McMahon.

Motorists have been guided “down the wrong road for too long” by satellite navigation systems when traversing the rural parts of Co Clare, Cllr PJ Kelly (FF) remarked at a recent sitting of the West Clare Municipal District.

“We’ve to have a chat with the posh lady who is driving people astray, she has been driving people down the wrong road for too long, we’ve tried charm, maybe Alan is the man,” Cllr Kelly quipped as he nominated senior engineer Alan Kennelly for the task.

His comments were made during a discussion to a motion from Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) who appealed for road restoration work on the L-2050 “in view of the recent number of accidents on this stretch of

roadway”.

Kennelly confirmed that the L-2050 was not included on the 2021 scheduled of MD works but flagged that 800 linear metres of the L-20507 on the Cooraclare end was surface dressed last year. The L-2050-16 (Tullagower end) is scheduled to benefit from a Low-Cost Safety Scheme (LCSS) in 2021.

He explained, “This will be at the crest of the steep hill.

Included in the LCSS will be signage at the Cooraclare and N68 ends of the L-2050.

The signage will advise motorists of alternate routes available and discourage them from using the relatively narrow L-2050. This road is often recommended to motorists as a short cut to North Clare by satellite navigation systems”.

Traffic is directed onto the road by motorists coming off the ferry from Kerry who are then using a Sat Nav, Keating stated.

Several cars have been pulled from ditches by tractors on the road, he cautioned.

QUIN ROADWORKS

FAILURE to plan improvements this year for a Quin Rd have caused “a lot of disappointment”, writes Páraic McMahon.

Road works on the Ballyhickey Rd in Quin were requested by Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) at a meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District.

“The road is in a very poor condition,” he highlighted. The motion was seconded by Cllr Alan O’Callaghan (FF).

Consideration to include the road in the 2022 roadworks programme will be made, senior executive engineer Niamh Madden responded, however she confirmed that it was not on the current programme. Essential maintenance would be completed on the road, she added.

O’Callaghans Mills representative Cooney said there was “a lot of disappointment” on the road’s absence from this year’s programme, “as we’re all well aware a lot of roads didn’t make it”.

He acknowledged that the road was not a particularly long stretch but that it had over 20 houses located on it. “I am hopeful that it could be done later this year if the funding is available, if not it definitely should be on the 2022 programme.

CLONDOORNEY Lough is 40 acres in area and is located 2km north of the village of Tulla. The road runs right beside the lake and you can literally fish from your car.

Tulla Scouts 12th Clare saw the potential to develop the area so with the help &

guidance of Ruairi O’Conchuir from Local Authority Waters Programme a plan was put in place. Tulla Tidy Towns, Tulla District Angling Club and Clare Walks also came on board. Six new benches have been put in the bays so that people that can relax and enjoy the views.

Last Friday night Tulla Scout leaders took part in a training session at the lake with Ruairi. On Sunday 22nd August as part of Water Heritage Week 2021 the groups plan to host a joint event in Clondoorney to share our love of the lake with the community so save the date, it will be fun for all ages.

WEST CLARE

NORTH CLARE ROAD REPAIRS

ROAD repairs to the villages of Ballyvaughan, Corofin and Kilfenora are due to be completed by the end of July, writes Páraic McMahon.

A total budget allocation of €515,455 has been set aside for works in the three North Clare villages under the 2021 roadworks programme in Clare County Council.

Senior executive engineer, Enda MacNamara explained that the sections of road will be resurfaced with either Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) or Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA).

Resurfacing of the R-477 in Ballyvaughan will commence 1km from the centre of the village and continue west for 750m. A 750m section of the R-476 in Lakefield, Corofin will also be surfaced along the Ennis Rd between the L-5232 and the R-460.

A section of Corofin’s main street will also be resurfaced, MacNamara confirmed. Works will begin at the junction of the R-460 and continue west for 110m.

An update was sought by Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) at a meeting of the West Clare Municipal District. “One of the roads that is really bad is Ballyvaughan heading west and Corofin village from the speed limit at the edge of the village into the Grotto, it was dug up 10 years ago by Irish Water who restored the road surface but it is not up to standard we expect in 2021”.

CONGRATULATIONS to three St. Marys AC athletes who competed at the Munster juveniles championships held at MTU Cork last weekend.

On Saturday Eoin Soffe set a new Munster championship record taking the Gold with a super run in the boys u13 600m with a time of 1:39:61. On Sunday Gemma Galvin won gold in the girls u 15 800m run while also U15 Clara Miniter won gold in the shot and bronze in the javelin. They now prepare for the All Ireland national finals in August.

ROAST TOMATO AND PEPPER SOUP

S I type it is 2.30 pm on Sunday and the Munster Hurling Semi Final between Clare and Tipp will throw in soon, and barring a disastrous refereeing performance, I am assuming that the Banner will absolutely wreck Tipp’s season.

It is pelting rain outside and to be honest it makes me want something warming without expending too much effort. Plus I have hurling to watch, so here is my minimal fuss, Roast Tomato and Pepper Soup. This recipe makes one litre.

The beauty industry is constantly changing and evolving with brand new techniques. I love learning about very effective tips when applying makeup and how it can ultimately change the whole look in a matter of seconds. I’m going to share some of my favourite makeup tips that I have learned from applying makeup on my clients and myself.

TIP 1: SKIN PREP Your skin condition can interpret how your makeup will apply. Your skin care routine plays the main role in your makeup routine and often is forgotten. I recommend applying SPF, moisturiser and eye cream before makeup use. If you want that extra dewy look I recommend using an illuminating primer before applying foundation.

TIP 2: EYE MAKEUP FIRST If you apply eye makeup first, it helps you dodge that eyeshadow fallout on your cheeks when having your skin makeup on. It creates

These are just some tips I have learned but makeup involves so much more. What I love about makeup is that you can learn from your own mistakes and experience. My advice is always persevere when making mistakes and learn from them. There are no rules when it comes to makeup so do whatever makes you look and feel better.

A

GREEMENT was reached last week by the EU on the new CAP. The Common Agricultural Policy had its origin from two main objectives, the first to guarantee a stable supply of cheap high quality food to the citizens of the EU, the second to ensure a fair standard of living for farmers because their produce when sold was not returning its cost of production.

To a large degree the CAP has met these objectives. However the way the new CAP has been agreed, it is obvious that this is a policy that has lost its way and is becoming more of a Common Environmental Policy. Where a farmer once was entitled to their payment so long as they abided by good agricultural practice, they will now have to apply for eco-schemes

within the policy to draw down their full payment.

This is the proverbial devil hiding in the detail of the new CAP. The EU is leaving it up to each member state to come up with its own definition of an active farmer. They have mooted that perhaps member states could asses off farm income for example as a way of assessing whether a farmer is an active farmer or not which is hardly a measure of how active a farmer is. The discourse should all focus around this active farmer question rather than the silly, banal media fuelled talk of how the CAP will benefit or disadvantage big or small farmers. There are brilliant small farmers who tick all the boxes as an active farmer, they derive much of their income off the land, they are productive and they return much

of what they earn to the local economy. Equally there are large farmers who are not productive, they don’t earn much of their living off the land, because they generate little money off their acreage they return very little to the local economy. The point is that scale tells us little about how active a farmer is. Active farmers come in all sizes as do armchair farmers.

My simple definition of an active farmer is someone who is making the best of what they have in terms of land and climate, they are trying to maintain and improve on what has been given to them by past generations. In some cases the farmer doesn’t own any land but one does not have to own land to be a farmer.

The issue comes when this decision has to be made at member state level as the baggage of politics is thrown into the mix, the result of this is probably some sort of unsatisfactory fudge.

There is only so much in the CAP budget and it needs to be focused at those who are actively farming thus actively stimulating rural Ireland.

We have started to release the handbrake on grazing and cows are off their supplement of silage in the diet, all thanks to the glorious return of the rain. The reseeded paddocks were grazed for the first time at the weekend.

Considering the drought like conditions, we were very happy with how they performed and just how even the grass established itself. A cow presented with mastitis last week and we trialled a natural bolus that seems to have cured it. This was very encouraging and as it is natural there is no withdrawal period for the milk. Hopefully science and nature will advance more innovations like this in the future.

HERE’S a famous scene in Fr. Ted when the main characters discuss the significance of July 19th. As per the show, this was the day that the Ice Age ended, Marathon became Snickers and Galway was liberated from Indians.

I’ve always laughed at this, being the date of my parent’s anniversary.

But for many more that date has taken on a new, serious significance, as international travel is slated to recommence and the hospitality sector is slated to re-open, both via the use of vaccine passports.

Yet, as I type less than 2 weeks from that date, there are precious little details as to how any of this will work.

As it stands, Ireland is the only EU country not yet issuing the Digital Green Cert for travel to its citizens, blaming the HSE computer hack for the delay.

Then came the news that people who got their jab at a centre will get it in the post, and others will get an email, but no word on those Irish people who may have gotten it over the border.

Nor was there any mention of how long one will have to wait, post-jab, to receive the cert in the future, affecting hundreds of thousands of mainly young people who await the cert of socialising and travel.

Again, the Government have managed to turn a good news story of the country re-opening into a bit of a shambles of half communicated ideas and uncertainty.

The fact that waves of torrential rain have passed over the country this week has done little to lighten the mood as the “Great Irish Outdoor Summer” looks like a complete folly

as restaurants cancel bookings on punters due to the wash outs all week.

Nevertheless, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It finally appears the Government has grown a spine and decided to lead on at least one or two items of Covid policy at last; namely, the use of antigen testing, and resisting NPHET’s desire to keep indoor hospitality closed until September.

Perhaps the looming spectre of a bye-election in a largely young age profile constituency made them sit up and take note of the sacrifices young people have made for the past 15 months. That hasn’t stopped the doom-mongers who would still have people in their homes indefinitely, aching for the ‘Zero-Covid’ policy that has since utterly failed the countries that pursued it and has seen them slip back into further lockdowns.

Given the failure of their policy internationally, their calls for temperance have fallen on deaf ears and notably are not getting the media airtime they once were. It’s clear to almost everyone that it’s time we learned to be responsible and live with the virus, as we do the flu virus every year.

Vaccines have been the key to this objective, as most knew they always would be. The Government have delivered on this front in one of the few clear wins it has enjoyed over their first year in office together.

Ireland looks set to be top of the class in Europe, hitting the 70% fully vaccinated mark by the end of the month before any other EU country.

We now also enjoy a vaccination rate much higher than the UK and US where daily numbers are plum-

meting and are quickly catching up to Israel who were, heretofore, the World leaders.

Yet still we lag behind our European counterparts in terms of restrictions, regulation and freedoms.

Cases are rising in Ireland, as they are elsewhere in Europe, but this was always going to be the case on re-opening.

Until we hit a virtual 100% vaccination mark, the virus will transmit around the population. The fact we will never see 100% vaccination through a combination of those who refuse it and those who medically cannot get it, means a zero-case scenario forever is not realistic.

Some point to December and the case load we saw after that re-opening, but the main difference is vaccinations. On this, the science is clear; vaccines save lives and massively limit illness. The more that get them, the quicker this will all be over.

The quicker we will see flights taking off from Shannon on a near full schedule.

The quicker we will see the late-night pubs and clubs of the county full once more. The quicker we can have weddings, full of friends and family we’ve waited too long to embrace once again. With vaccines available to everyone over 18 now, there is no excuse bar supply.

Get yourself registered and support the re-opening of society and the protection of those who will otherwise remain medically vulnerable.

There is literally no other way out of this but to follow and trust the independently peer reviewed science, carefully regulated

by US and EU regulators.

IALL O’Connor has been appointed the new Sales Director at The Clare Echo.

The Ennis native, who joined The Clare Echo sales team in April 2019, will step into the position recently vacated by Ger Naughton on her retirement.

O’Connor (30) previously worked in roles with Mincon in Shannon and Barry Smyth DIY in Ennis. The former St Flannan’s student is heavily involved with the Éire Óg club and has held various coaching roles across Clare GAA. Niall also runs Manchester United Tickets Ireland.

During his time with The Clare Echo, Niall has been a key contributor

to growing sales figures.

Tesco donates €2,000 to three local causes TESCO Ireland has today announced that the latest round of donations from its Community Fund will be shared among community groups supporting diversity and inclusion across Ireland, with €2,000 to be split among four causes in Clare, writes Elaine Tubridy.

NCCWN Clare Women's Network LGBTQ, Mná ag Gáire Ennis CLG and Clare Sports Partnership are among the groups in Clare which will receive donations from local stores in the latest round of funding.

Commenting on the latest round of donations, Rosemary Garth, Communications Director, Tesco Ireland said: “We are delighted to announce details of the latest Community Fund project which has allowed Tesco Ireland to help local causes in support of diversity and inclusion across the country.

"We are delighted this Community Fund will help to support NCCWN Clare Women's Network LGBTQ, Mná ag Gáire Ennis CLG and Clare Sports Partnership in Clare.”

During 2020, Tesco Ireland donated over €1 million in Covid supports to causes nationwide This included a €150,000 donation split among three national charities - ALONE, Age Action and Family Carers Ireland - to support their efforts in helping the elderly, family carers and the most vulnerable members of local communities throughout the country. In January 2021, Tesco announced that its Community Fund had reached a milestone of €5 million in donations to local communities across Ireland.

Pride month, which is dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities all

around the world, kicked off with an onsite display that charted the history of gay rights in Ireland and Europe.

Staff also took part in a Pride quiz with Pride mugs among the spot prizes. They also participated in a company-wide ‘The Freedom to Be Yourself’ event that connected staff worldwide at other company sites.

ORE than 350 children in 12 primary schools across Clare, Galway, Limerick and Tipperary have learned more about biodiversity and how to reduce waste, reuse and recycle, thanks to an environmental initiative run by global healthcare technology company, Zimmer Biomet as part of the Junior Achievement outreach program.

Under the initiative, dubbed Keen to Keep it Green, the company donated trees and wildflowers and its employees visited schools to plant the trees, wildflowers and run litter clean-ups. The programme was conducted in full compliance with COVID-19 regulations and public health guidelines.

Wedding planner: reason to be positive KATE DEEGAN

L

IKE so many industries in Covid, there was not any work - in that, there was no work/income with weddings not happening but there certainly was a lot of work in the background. Couples that I am working with were put in the awful position of having to postpone and postpone again.

This meant that I had to get in touch with the venue and all the suppliers and make changes for the couple and look for a new date. The new date did not work for some suppliers, in which case new suppliers had to be sourced. All of this has been done over and over but finally... finally couples who were really withered from it all, placed their plans to the back of their mind and now the thinking is – all we want to do is get married!

In June, we had weddings of 25 and we enjoyed being part of them – I honestly can not explain how wonderful they all were. The feelings that both families had, the lucky guests that got to attend and

then the amazing day that they had is really hard to capture in words. Now this month we are planning weddings with 50 guests and we can not wait for them!

I did have a few of these scaled down weddings last year when it was open to have weddings of 50 and 25, and they were just brilliant. When I say scaled down, the only things that are scaled down are the numbers and unfortunately the entertainment – but apart from that they have all been amazing events. To see the signature cocktails on arrivals, delicious canapes, menus that have such choice - it is not your typical function menu - gorgeous wines to accompany the meal, is incredible. The couples are really going all out on their décor – it is like they are thinking, if I can’t have all the guests we wanted, ‘we will still put our stamp on it and make it absolutely amazing and memorable for the guests that are attending’. One bride said to me that what she lost on guests she made up on flowers and she loved every bit of it.

course, it is a very personal choice. Everyone is in a different position – for example I had three weddings last year and one of the couples is now pregnant. In that case, it is so amazing and brilliant that they didn’t hold off longer and put this part of their lives on hold. Some other couples I am working with already have kids and just want to see if the number will enable an increase in guests for them and also with the addition of entertainment – but what I say each time is, it is whatever they are comfortable with doing.

I know for a fact after 19 year of my own business of coordinating weddings, smaller more intimate weddings are so amazing and you would not have any regrets with going ahead with them. I actually think it suits a lot more couples than you think. I am totally behind the government closing things down for everyone’s safety and now that things are opening up slowly I think everyone should enjoy it and embrace it, and stop postponing and get married.

‘The big Irish wedding is still a draw, people want friends and family there’

Clare businesses assess impact of disruptive year while looking to future STUART HOLLY

HE wedding industry has been rocked like few others over the last 16 months, with the pandemic casting an enormous shodow over the sector which is worth €2.3billion to the economy.

However after a number of starts and stops, there finally appears to be clarity and an appetite to get the show back on the road, not just from service providers but also young couples eager to start the next significant chapter of their lives.

Ennis-based wedding photographer Gary Collins has been involved in the industry for six years and revealed that in 2020, some 80 per cent of his weddings were cancelled.

“Some couples had to reschedule two or three times and obviously with restrictions they pushed it out, so 2020 weddings are spread out now in most cases between the tail end of 2021 into 2022,” Gary tells The Clare Echo.

“Juggling dates was tricky and to make sure you didn’t double book a date but most couples would have been very good at keeping the lines of communication open with ourselves. We’re lucky that there’s a nice network of photographers in Clare and Limerick and we came together to make sure couples were covered so if I wasn’t available for a date, it would have been passed onto a colleague.”

Collins is known for his candid documentary style of wedding photography, and a wedding day itself has essentially remained the same for the Newmarket-on-Fergus man. “My day is still the same, I’m still there to capture the small moments, the little glances and little smiles between couples and between family and friends. So I’m still very much in the background at a distance capturing the moments as they happen so it hasn’t impacted how I would work. I’m still there to cover the same amount of hours and the final result that I should get is the same as what they would get if they had 200 guests.”

Gary traditionally carried out work across the midwest region of Clare, Limerick, Galway and Tipperary however he now finds himself branching out nationwide as a result of the pandemic. He also took the opportunity over the last 16 months to expand his commercial photography business during the downtime from weddings.

Now with numbers increased to 50 from 25, Gary says that there’s a 50-50 split of couples happy to go ahead versus those waiting for numbers to increase to 100+. “There are an element that are happy to go ahead with

smaller numbers but the big Irish wedding is still a draw for people, they still want their family and friends there.”

Meanwhile, Hotel Woodstock in Ennis have made the most of the disruptive year by producing a series of videos, starring co-owners Sean and Elaine Lally, which have gone viral and aim to promote their wedding business.

The wedding industry has been the “backbone” of Hotel Woodstock’s business model since the Lallys took over in November 2016. At that stage they had six weddings on the books, a number that has multiplied

many times over in the last five years. Pre Covid they had 70 weddings on their books in 2020. Elaine admits it’s difficult to put a number on how many weddings are on their books today due to the amount of juggling of dates, however their weekend dates are almost at full capacity from August to October, an indication that weddings are back in full swing, if on a different scale.

Juggling dates has been a difficult experience for not only the hotels but also the bride and groom, acknowledges Elaine, and with this in mind couples are offered a number of dates by Hotel Woodstock as a starting

point, before the date is set in stone. Elaine fears restrictions will continue until 100 per cent of the population are vaccinated, “I’m telling my brides for August and September to plan for 50.” However she insists that couples will get the same treatment regardless of size, “It doesn’t matter if the wedding is 10 or 200, I’ll treat the wedding the same.”

It’s that treatment the Lallys have become renowned for. “It’s a big investment today, getting married in a hotel, and from the beginning we decided we were going to manage it from start to finish, it’s the personal touch.” Sean and Elaine stand on the steps of the hotel and welcome every guest on the invite list before remaining in the reception room for the entire day. Elaine explains, “Couples only deal with me from start to finish and then Sean and I are there for the day, and are with them throughout the whole experience.”

The couple admit that while it’s been “very hard work” managing dates - something which has been emphasised further as Bunratty Castle Hotel remains temporarily closed until December - they acknowledge that couples have had their hands full trying to deal with all their providers and trying to predict restrictions or finalise how many people they can invite. With this in mind, Elaine says it’s more important than ever to make sure the day remains one to remember for the bride and groom.

“We were always known for a good party.

25 people was very hard so what I do with most bride and grooms, I advise them to get involved in games, Mr & Mrs, a table quiz, have a slide show, that kind of thing. Once you get the party going, it clicks and it’s flying it. I take it personally if they’re not having a good time.”

With the onset of Covid, Sean says Hotel Woodstock are well placed to cater for smaller weddings which have been an enforced result of the pandemic. “We’re finding a lot of weddings are getting smaller and with our facilties we can well cater for smaller weddings. They’re often over a number of days as well and alot of couples from outside the county are coming to stay for a few days.”

Looking ahead, Elaine believes restrictions will continue to play on the minds of couples but she says they are working harder than ever to make sure everybody is accomodated, and at ease. “Next year I have a few dates available but I reckon a lot of couples are holding out to see if the numbers go up to 100. Last week I took four weddings, one was for 2022 and the rest were for 2021. I think with Covid, there’s going to be a shorter lead-in time. It’ll be more about value for money and definitely about having your nearest and dearest, but not as intimate as 25, it will go on with 50.”

ASKING PRICE FOR COASTAL PROPERTY UP 23% SINCE COVID

AHINCH has experienced one of the largest increases in property prices nationwide during the pandemic, a new study has revealed.

Listed property prices in coastal holiday areas across the board have increased by 22.9%, according to the Daft.ie Coastal Report, which examined 120,000 properties listed for sale from January 2019 until April 2021. The report found that the average listed price of properties in these areas now at €224,500, up from €182,000 pre-pandemic. It displays enormous disparity from the housing

market as a whole, with property prices increasing nationally by 8.6 per cent.

However a closer look at County Clare reveals that people in the market for a coastal property here have been severely impacted.

While coastal properties in holiday hotspots have increased in price by nearly 23 per cent, Lahinch in North Clare has seen an increase of 39 per cent, the third highest jump nationwide according to the report behind Kilmore Quay in Wexford (54%) and Dunmore East in Waterford (51%).

“We find clear evidence that echoes anecdotes that the price of coastal property has been on the increase since the onset of the pandemic,” environmental economist and house price analyst Dr Tom

Gillespie, who is the author of the Daft.ie ‘Coastal Report’, told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.

The research by Dr Gillespie, a house price analyst, also showed property searches in coastal areas

increased by 45 per cent, while Dublin property searches dropped by as much as 59 per cent in some areas.

“Lockdowns and resulting remote working have led to a heightened appreciation of the environment around us and the realisation that the trade-off between being close to work and being close to nature may be changing - in favour of the latter,” added Dr Gillespie.

“In particular, we see an effect on properties that are not just within 500 metres of the coast of Ireland but in areas where more than 10 per cent of the total stock of housing are holiday homes. This latter feature identifies those parts of the coast that are well established in terms of coastal amenities, including beaches.”

Monday’s juicy final round will confirm the last four pairings as table toppers Inagh-Kilnamona and Sixmilebridge lock horns in a repeat of last year’s Under 14A decider as do St Josephs Doora/Barefield and Clonlara.

Timely goals through Steven Murphy, Thomas O’Halloran, Fred Hegarty and Eoin Hegarty protected Inagh-Kilnamona’s perfect start with a 4-16 to 3-15 away win over Clarecastle on Monday evening while Clonlara cemented their

Clare don’t have to wait long to put injustice right Darach Honan’s CHAMPIONSHIP ANALYSIS AT THE end of what could have been another classic clash between old rivals, boos rang out from the stands as a result of a dreadful interpretation of a recently introduced rule by James Owens. The rule, which was brought in to combat cynical fouling of attackers when in on goal, was never intended to award penalties for infractions on the sideline, and everyone in Clare will rightly feel aggrieved that we are not advancing to the Munster Final against Limerick.

With a championship game under our belts, Clare started the game much the better as we would have hoped. While Tipperary looked sharp in attack, their defence took time to settle and, in the meantime, the Clare forwards made hay. Tipperary were unable to cope with the dynamism of our forwards, particularly Ian Galvin who capitalised on several defensive errors and hit Tipp for 1-2 in the first half. He was also involved in some positive build-up play and was the standout performer for Clare on the day.

Tipp did settle though, and in the second quarter they got on top by developing a strong foothold through their half forward line.

This in turn gave them the platform to run up a big score. Jake Morris came into the game when moved off the tigerish Rory Hayes. Jason Forde and Bubbles Dwyer switched regularly to centre forward and picked off some good scores while Michael Breen’s direct running was causing us problems.

It appeared as though we would be entering half time trailing Tipperary, despite dominating the play.

However, a brilliant assist from David Reidy led to a Tony Kelly goal

and a massive boost for Clare. The momentum swung back to Clare and supporters applauded them off the field at half time and confidence was high going into the second half.

Cue James Owens intervention.

Aidan McCarthy had worked hard to track back and turnover Jake Morris who was ready to pull the trigger and pop the ball over the bar.

Having won back possession Aidan found a teammate. Morris brilliantly dispossessed Clare again and was about to regain possession when Aidan came in with a mistimed and tired challenge. A straightforward call for the referee: free in and yellow card. However, the Clare and Tipperary people around me in the crowd were dismayed at the decision to award a penalty and sin bin McCarthy. With numerous covering defenders present and possession not even secured by Morris, it was an embarrassing example of inept refereeing.

Clare were visibly rattled and took the rest of the quarter to recover their composure. Tipperary outscored Clare 2-4 to 2 points in this time and it could have been worse.

We seemed vulnerable when Tipperary ran the ball from midfield and half forward line. They regularly scythed through the middle of our defence and created goal scoring opportunities. We might counter this by introducing David McInerney to shore up our defence here.

He made a huge impact when he came on at the weekend and placing him at the centre of the defence could improve things drastically.

back to our 21-yard line to create an overlap for Eibhear to pick out.

This worked well initially as Clare worked the ball effectively. However, Tipperary quickly adapted and forced less confident defenders to collect them. This allowed them to pressure the Clare clearance with just five forwards, and create a sweeping defender further back the field when Clare did deliver it.

Clare will have to work out how to develop a medium length puckout to take advantage when opposition do withdraw players back the field to cover off the long option.

Finally, I think our game management let us down at the weekend.

Cratloe 1-18 Kilmaley 1-17 Lightning did strike twice for Cratloe as for the second successive Clare Cup outing, they stole the honours at the death. Difficult task facing Clare minor hurlers SEAMUS HAYES CLARE have been handed a difficult task in the opening round of the Munster under 17 hurling championship in which they play Cork at Semple Stadium in Thurles on Wednesday evening next (July 14) at 7.30p.m.

Two years ago Cork won the Munster U15 A and B competitions and the majority of the players involved then will make up the Leesiders panel next week.

Clare have to plan for this campaign without four players who are part of their panel. Liam Kavanagh (Éire Óg), midfield in last year’s team and Michael Nash (Doora-Barefield), also a member of last year’s panel are both ruled out with long term injuries.

Kavanagh recently had surgery on a groin injury while Nash is

recovering from a cruciate injury while also ruled out of next week’s tie are Sam Scanlan of Clooney-Quin and Sam Meaney from Wolfe Tones.

“Facing into the championship without these four is a blow”, according to team manager Terence

Chaplin from Sixmilebridge who was part of last year’s backroom team under then manager Brian Coffey from the Banner club.

“We are looking for a performance to match the work that the lads have put in both during the lockdown and since we were

allowed back to collective training. The players have applied themselves excellently, via zoom during the lockdown and since we returned to action. It’s nine weeks since we were allowed to return to training and it’s been just five weeks since we were allowed to have challenge games”, according to the manager who added that challenge games against Kilkenny, Galway, Offaly and Dublin have been played.

Inagh-Kilnamona’s Sean Rynne has been appointed as team captain with Tulla’s Tony Leyden as vice captain. Rynne is challenging for a place at midfield or in attack while Leyden is expected to feature in defence.

Adam Enright from Newmarket-on-Fergus and Seamie O’Donnell from Feakle-Killanena are battling for the goalkeeper’s position.

Chasing a place in defence are Shane Woods, (Inagh-Kilnamona), a survivor from last year’s

“WE KNEW Clare were going to be a formidable challenge and in fairness to them, they were out of the blocks like a rocket and hit us for 1-7 early on and held a six point cushion. But I thought the reaction our lads showed to get back in the game was very, very strong and then they [Clare] got a goal again before half-time so that left us a point down playing into the breeze.

“The character of the dressing room was tested and I just couldn’t be more pleased with the reaction in the second half. Some of our hurling I thought was as good as we’ve ever played. Our bench came in and really delivered and look, we were probably sucking for air a little bit in the last ten or 15 minutes as Clare came again and pushed us tight. But overall, it was a good performance and we’re just delighted to get over the line”.

“I think in this game with the new rule, inside the ’21 is the danger zone so you’re at risk and unfortunately it’s a fine line. I think there’s going to be a lot of arguments as to whether it should be or it shouldn’t be and was there a man back or wasn’t there. But look, we got the break today, we got the penalty and no better man than Jason Forde to stand up and put it in the back of the net.

“I DON’T know where the referee got his interpretation, I’d say he was the only man on the ground that saw a goal scoring opportunity out of that, Aidan I thought went for the ball but mistimed the tackle, how he called a penalty and sent one of our guys off I’m just very frustrated with it”.

“2-04 to 0-02 was the score in that period of time, we’re very frustrated with it absolutely, our lads don’t deserve that, they trained hard, trained well, came down and gave their all, I’m so disgusted with that decision. Donnellan hoping to put senior lessons into practice EOIN BRENNAN ONE OF four Under 20’s that received invaluable senior experience with Brian Lohan this year, Paddy Donnellan is currently the only one of that quartet still available for Clare’s opening provincial Under 20 bout against Kerry in Austin Stack Park in Tralee on Monday evening (7.30pm).

With chief marksman Mark Rodgers now ineligible due to his Munster Senior Championship cameos, and Cian Galvin (knee) and Shane Meehan (hand) both nursing injuries, the inspirational Broadford dynamo leads out the Banner for the first time as captain in a team full of captains.

“It’s adds a bit to it to be captain of the team but really this is a very strong panel and there have been a lot of lads to the age that have been driving the squad on while a few of us were training with the seniors. So when we came back in, you could really see that there were eight or nine players to the age that were really driving it on and hopefully that leadership will be demonstrated on the pitch too come Monday evening against Kerry”.

Donnellan made his debut for the seniors against Antrim in the opening round of National League in Belfast in early May, the first of many the versatile defender hopes in the future. “It was great for myself, Cian, Shane and Mark as it

definitely brought us on as well so it’s been a very positive experience overall. Every day you go training with the seniors, you’re learning something new and hopefully anything I’ve learned or gathered, I have tried to pass on to the Under 20’s. It’s very important that we try to get the most out of every player.”

Even the uncharted waters of being this group’s first competitive outing against Kerry doesn’t unduly concern this Clare squad as regardless of absentees, there is a determined air of confidence and assuredness to succeed this time around after five successive first round exits.

“Going down to Kerry can be daunting enough when we don’t know what to expect but it can also be a good thing because we’re going into every game now just focusing on ourselves. We don’t know much about Kerry as we wouldn’t have played them at underage so instead we’ve just concentrated on ourselves and making sure that we’re the best that we can be.

“And the bottom line is that we know that if we go into it one hundred per cent mentally, physically and tactically, we won’t have any regrets regardless of the outcome because we can do no more.That’s a great position to be in as we ultimately don’t know what to expect but we’re really looking forward to just getting out on the field on Monday night.”

Doyle anxious to make it third time lucky at U20 grade EOIN BRENNAN CLARE Under 20 manager Sean Doyle is hoping to make it third time lucky when his side commence their 2021 Munster Championship campaign against Kerry in Tralee on Monday evening.

Having spearheaded two memorable minor adventures in 2017 and ’18, the Bodyke clubman’s step up to Under 20 level has been dogged by injuries to key players amidst successive first round exits to Cork and Tipperary. However, while his treatment table fortunes haven’t altered this year, Doyle is confident that Clare are better equipped to deal with any absentees for the knock-out competition.

“Overall, I’ve great faith in these

lads. They’ve serious work done since we’ve returned and have played five matches in the last few weeks against Tipp, Kilkenny, Galway, Wexford and Offaly. So we’ve had a good preparation and everyone has had an even chance. It has been a long time since last year.

There were 12 of this year’s squad that lined out against Tipp last October and all are available again bar Mark Rodgers who is ineligible due to this ridiculous new rule. I mean because he played 20 minutes of senior hurling, he cannot play for us now which is a killer.

“Shane Meehan, one of our talismanic forwards, is also out with a hand injury, Cian Galvin is nursing a knee injury and is definitely out for Monday at least, Killian O’Connor is gone with an ankle injury while Ian McNamara broke his finger against Offaly so is in

a race against time to play some part. To lose three elite players is a major blow for any team but it does give others a great opportunity to show what they can do.

“We’ve 34 players in training and we’ve changed our style a small but this year to suit our players but even as a shop window for senior level, it’s a fantastic platform as Brian Lohan brought in a good few of our players into his development squad and is keeping a close eye on our progress.”

In addition to retaining his backroom team of Jim McInerney (Tulla), Ger Rodgers (Scariff) and coaches Val Murnane (Caherline) and Evan Kilroy (Gort), the addition of All-Ireland senior winner Niall Gilligan (Sixmilebridge) has brought ‘great energy to the group’ according to Doyle who is acutely aware of the unpredictable task

that awaits them on Monday.

“We’ve just tried to make it as professional as we can in the hope of getting a good result on Monday evening and that includes the help of Paul Flanagan who has been doing a bit with us on the side. We’re going into the unknown and being on a week day, it’s a long day and good journey down to Tralee too but overall, we’re treating Kerry with the utmost respect because Clare haven’t had good results in this competition in the last few years either.

“I know we’ve been hindered by a lot of injuries but look, we’re hungry for a result and we’re not taking Kerry in any way for granted because we know that they are out for a big scalp so we’re well prepared for Monday evening”.

CLARE’S newly appointed U20 football captain is embracing the championship buzz ahead of Thursday’s Munster quarter-final with Waterford.

Ennistymon’s Eoin Rouine has said he is honoured to get the opportunity to lead his county into battle this weekend when they make the journey to Dungarvan.

“A successful week would be to go down to Fraher Field and beat Waterford but we’ve a good U20 team and always the ultimate goal is to win a Munster championship, our focus this week is to beat

Waterford in their home ground which can often prove to be a tough challenge,” he told The Clare Echo.

Big sporting occasions don’t daunt the towering midfielder given his experience representing his country in the 2019 European lifesaving championships. “I love the lifesaving, it is a great sport, it is great for fitness and helps with football a lot, my main love is the football, I was reared playing football, since I could walk I was kicking a ball and that is my main love”.

With the Rouine family having such a strong reputation in gaelic football circles in the county, it comes as no surprise that the next generation have maintained this love for the game. “We all love it

in fairness, I’m lucky to be playing alongside my brothers and cousins all the way up along at club and county level”. Two of his cousins Cillian and Brendy are also part of the county U20 panel.

For the past three summers, Eoin has worked as a lifeguard with Clare County Council, “I love it, it is a great job with great reward”. He has managed to combine this role and his football while also remembering the importance of recovery.

Manager Michael Neylon revealed that Love Island is the main talking point among the players during the cooldown. Eoin didn’t admit to being one of the regular viewers, “A few of the boys are mad into their Love Island, a few of the

managers too. I haven’t watched any of it myself or I won’t admit to it anyways, it is a bit of entertainment in the evening after training for some of the lads, a good discussion point”.

If any Clare U20 footballer was to appear in the villa, captain Rouine is of the view that Jamie Stack of St Breckans would be the most likely candidate, “he loves himself so he does”.

Thursday’s primary focus will be on securing a place in the semi-finals, if that target is met, the long journey home may be shortened by catching up on antics from Love Island.

We are looking at the last two years it’s one win for Waterford and one win for Clare, this is the deciding one and this is going to be a really tough battle, home advantage means an awful lot as we found out in Miltown last year and we know it is going to mean an awful lot to Waterford, they have been steeling themselves for that situation and we possibly

Eye-catching victory for Bling Bling Paul BLING Bling Paul followed up a superb Golden Muzzle campaign with an eye-catching victory in Limerick at the weekend.

The penultimate race at the Limerick track on Saturday night last saw Bling Bling Paul reign supreme in a 550-yard contest. Owned by John Meehan of Newmarket on Fergus, Bling Bling Paul, a 5/2 shot, broke best of all from trap three and he quickly asserted control of the contest, the son of Sh Avatar and Killinan Reina was never under any threat thereafter and he duly came home six lengths clear of Grouchos Cain in second. The time was a terrific 29.73.

Loxley is another who is well accustomed to his surroundings at Limerick and the Sean Stack of Sixmilebridge runner ran out a good winner of race ten. Coming away

well from trap five, Loxley took up the running entering the back straight and proceeded to open a five length lead over his rivals.

However, the son of Laughil Blake and Rallying Way was given a scare in the latter stages as Sharavogue came home strongly to only go down by three parts of a length at the line. The time for the 5/2 market chance was 28.55.

The chief supporting contest at the Galway Track on Friday night last was the A3 graded eleventh contest over 525 yards and from traps the Michael Costello of North Clare owned Pinnacle Abbie was very smartly into her stride. Boy Hero’s racing career came to an abrupt end on Monday evening while sustaining a broken leg when preparing for a fourth Tipperary Cup. With a remarkable twenty seven career wins under his belt from ninety two races, Boy Hero brought many good days for its owners, Tommy Hegarty of Clarecastle, Newmarket-on-Fergus’ Seanie McMahon, Páraic Campion of

Tipperary and Ozzie Bennett from Kilkenny.

Hegarty confirmed that the glory days of Boy Hero on the track are no more, “he is currently recovering and will I’m sure be back on his feet soon and enjoying his retirement,” he said. “Boyhero our legend. What joy and entertainment you have given Paraic, Ozzie, Seanie and myself,” the former Magpies netminder reflected.

Goals aplenty as Junior soccer returns in Clare SEAMUS HAYES AFTER more than a year without competition, the Clare soccer league swung back into action at the weekend with first round games in the various league cup competitions.

There were plenty of goals across the four divisions and followers of the game are eagerly looking forward to this weekend’s fixtures.

Shannon Olympic in the premier and Inch Crusaders have withdrawn from this competition but they will be back in action come the various leagues which commence in August..Their withdrawal led to Newmarket Celtic A and Manus Celtic A without a game last week.

In the premier division Avenue United, managed by David Russell were 7-0 winners over Shan-

non Hibs on Sunday with their goals coming from Dylan Barry (2), Gary Roche (2), Eliaz Kunz, Thomas Hehir and Ronan Kerin (1 each).

Shannon Town A overcame Bridge United A by the odd goal in five with the winner’s goals coming from Kai Khetan, Jack Ryan and Brian Monaghan while Bridge United’s replies came from Leon Kelly and Conor Maxwell.

Coole FC were the weekend’s top scorers, hitting eight goals as they accounted for Turnpike Rovers who scored four times. Scorers for the Gort based side were Joe Copley (4), Tom O’Neill, Fergus Tuohy, Gabriel Egan and Kieran Burke.

Brendan Harkin scored the game’s only goal as Newmarket Celtic B recorded a 1-0 victory over Tulla United.

The B teams from Bridge United and Avenue United shared the spoils when they drew 2-2. Ethan Slater and Ronan Tuohy were

the Bridge goalscorers in this one while Jamie Roche and Sean Doherty scored for Avenue.

Fern Celtic made history as they fielded at junior level for the first time in the club’s history and to make matters better they emerged with a 3-2 win over Manus Celtic B in the third division. Liam Meaney (2) and Jamie O’Connell were the goalscorers for the winners.

Meanwhile six games in the youths league last Saturday provided 38 goals in total. The results here were; A division: Avenue United 5 Bridge United 3; Lifford 3 Bridge Celtic 2; Newmarket Celtic 4 Moher Celtic 2.

UNDEFEATED Ennis boxer, Paddy ‘Real Deal’ Donovan is to return to the ring in August.

With six wins from six outings in the professional ranks, Paddy has been making quite the impression with many pundits viewing him as one of the country’s brightest prospects in the sport.

His opponent is yet to be confirmed but the Clare fighter will be

back in the ring on August 6th in Belfast.

It is expected that Paddy will appear on the undercard of Michael Conlan's bout this summer as part of Feile An Phobail in an outdoor event in Falls Park in west Belfast.

Trained by Andy Lee, Paddy was last in professional action in February when he recorded a TKO win over Siar Ozgul.

Speaking after this win, Lee remarked, “The kid is a star as you can see and he is going to go places. This is only the beginning”.

An eight round fight was iden-

tified then as the next target by Donovan’s trainer while his team are hopeful he will challenge for a World Youth title before the end of 2021. Paddy turned 22 in January and has four knockouts among his six professional wins.

Since his last outing, Paddy has had some personal tragedy following the sudden death of his uncle William whom he was very close to.

TWO of the favourites to claim the 2021 Clare senior camogie championship are to meet in the group stages.

Reigning champions Inagh/ Kilnamona have been drawn in Group B of the senior championship where they will face Truagh/ Clonlara who’s management team includes Clare senior hurling captain John Conlon.

Fresh from their promotion from the intermediate ranks, Feakle/Killanena also find themselves in Group B where they will be confident of making their

mark. 2019 Senior B winners Sixmilebridge complete the group.

2019 Munster champions Scariff/Ogonnelloe will be confident of progressing to the knockout stages of Group A. They will face off with last year’s semi-finalists Kilmaley who have strengthened their panel since their agonising last four loss to Inagh/Kilnamona.

Last year’s beaten finalists Newmarket-on-Fergus who are without a win in two League outings complete the group alongside Kilkishen/Bodyke who narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot in 2020 and St Josephs Doora/ Barefield now in their second year back in the senior ranks.

Gavin had five strokes to spare over Michael Studdert who finished with 101 followed by Nevan Prendeville with 105, John Robinson with 107 and Malcolm McCarthy with 107.

Shane Lillis won the gross with 114 while the category winners were Gearoid Kelly with 110 and he also won the prize for nearest the pin, Gearoid Williams with 113 and Tom Cleary with 113. The leading qualifier was Brendan Carigg with 66.In the distance members section the winner was Bryden Cody with 109 from Senan Lillis with 111 and Declan Kearns with 113.

Noel Kilkenny won the committee prize while other prize winners were Jerry Leahy (past captain), Tom Clancy (long drive), Paul McGibney (front 9) with 29 and Donncadh Nagle (back 9) with 32.

The winner of the captain’s plate was Ross Cullinan with 37 from Michael Shannon Snr with a similar score while Noel Kilkenny was third with 36.
