Clare farmers sick of listening to ‘hippy dippies & tree huggers’ PÁRAIC McMAHON

ARMERS in Clare are growing increasingly tired of narratives put forward by “hippy dippies and tree huggers” that they are not doing enough to protect the environment. During a public consultation event that saw Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue (FF) visit Co Clare, farmers discussed a wide range of issues with the Donegal TD at Ennis Mart.
Cratloe’s Eddie Punch who is General Secretary of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) voiced his frustration at the depiction of farmers by environmentalists. “I know you have to listen to the environmental side of it but I am sick of listening to hippy dippies and tree huggers telling us we need to do more for the environment”. He also took umbrage with the views of “bird-watch supporters” trying to influence various policies. He said an agri-environment scheme needs to be included in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) that supports sheep and

suckler farmers. Veteran Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICSMA) representative, Martin McMahon said that “huge money” was spent by farmers in the county on measures to protect the environment. Concern was also raised by farmers on carbon credits with recent comments from the Minister on their ownership stoking debate. Vast areas of Clare will not be eligible for pillar one of the CAP, Denis Tuohy of Clare IFA flagged as he referenced his disappointment with eco-schemes discussed by the Minister.
