AHINCH will have a “carnival atmosphere” this July after it was confirmed that the businesses have requested the main street close to traffic during The Irish Open.

Cllr Bill Slattery outlined a proposal from business people in the area at last Wednesday’s meeting of the West Clare Municipal District for a full day or evening closure of the main street in Lahinch. The Fine Gael councillor had drawings to hand from the individuals involved, he said they were keen to liaise with the Gardaí, Clare County Council and relevant stakeholders to achieve the street closure. Slattery confirmed an event licence is not needed for the closure.

Shannon Venue gets new lifeline PÁRAIC McMAHON

NDIVIDUALS involved in The Venue which requires significant funding to get off the ground have been urged to stand by the project.

Director of Economic Development with Clare County Council, Liam Conneally when commenting on a motion from Cllr Mike McKee at the January meeting of the Shannon Municipal District stated, “A lot of work has been put in partnership with The Venue project, we require significant capital funding and the Department need proof why the site will be a starting point”. He added, “I believe the application for funding will be successful, my expectation is that in the coming months we will prepare for A level funding. There is a lot of work to be undertaken, we should stay at it and we will achieve success”.

At the same meeting, Cllr Gerry Flynn outlined his annoyance with views from business people posted on social media about local representatives. “I was very disappointed with the private business people who have put up on social media that the councillors for the town are not up to scratch and surplus to requirements”. The Independent continued, “I am encouraging the movers of he Venue to stay on the pitch, it is a long term goal we have been working on. The notion now that they are throwing their toys out of the pram that they didn’t get fund-

ing for an A rating project is wrong”. Sinn Féin’s Mike McKee commented, “Do we want The Venue? Of course we do. A street will be the heart of Shannon, The Venue will compliment it”.

Fine Gael held their Shannon selection for May’s local elections at Treacys Oakwood Hotel on Thursday last where their members of the Oireachtas shared their thoughts on the The Venue with members of the party.

“At the time Minister Murphy told it wasn’t successful I fought hard for it”, Junior Minister Pat Breen said. “We have to be careful with funding as a lot of it comes from the taxpayer,” he cautioned. “Funding will come for a Shannon project in the future, it has to be done in a proper structured way. We are working with Clare County Council and the Department to ensure we have a project that is fit for purpose for the next generation of Shannon”.

Deputy Joe Carey called on Clare County Council to step up for The Venue. “I’m disappointed it wasn’t funded and I immediately made representation to Minister Murphy when I heard it was unsuccessful”. He added, “Clare County Council needs to step up to the plate on this, a focal point is needed for this area.

I hope an exciting project can emanate from the ashes of this proposal”.

“I would like to see more of a Government commitment to the principle of a project in the heart of the community,” Senator Martin Conway announced.

'Bridge magician (84) set for primetime TV

IXMILEBRIDGE magician, Paddy Ward will show age is only a number when he appears on Ireland’s Got Talent this Saturday.

84-year-old Paddy has, for five years running, won the International Brotherhood of Magician Ring 85 Shield as Ireland's Top Magician, a feat that has yet to be matched. He was tempted to audition for the Virgin Media programme after watching last year.

“I said to myself I might as well have a go at this. I got the forms and filled them in, the next thing I was called for audition. I love magic, I’ve been in magic all my life, my father was a magician, he died a young man at 44, I took up magic when I was 10. I performed in my first show in the Oriel Cinema in Dundalk for a week at ten years of age and I’ve been at magic ever since,” Paddy told The Clare Echo on Tuesday.

A native of Dundalk, Paddy moved to Sixmilebridge in 2004 having previously resided in Limerick for 35 years. Since appearing in promos for Saturday’s show, Ward has been

receiving plenty of phone calls but has kept tight lipped on how his audition went.

Saturday will not be the first time he has appeared on television. He was in high demand following his international success with slots on RTÉ’s Live at Three and Play

the Game, the Gerry Kelly presented Kelly on UTV plus shows broadcast by the BBC. Nicknamed, ‘The Great Padini’, Paddy explained that magic is in his blood. His father Benni was his biggest inspiration in the field while Paddy has passed on the tricks of the trade to his family. “My grandaughter Lisa Hogan was a brilliant magician, she followed in my footsteps and she won all the awards I ever won, she did a different type of act, mine was a patter act I brought the fun into magic, she performed magic to music”.

His daughter Michelle lives in Sixmilebridge while his son Nigel is further afield in Australia. The death of his wife Josie forced him to take a break from magic and he described her passing to producers of the show as “the hardest thing I’ve ever had to face in my life.”

Last Friday, he celebrated his 84th birthday and on Wednesday of this week he performed for visitors to Carrigoran Daycare Centre. Paddy added, “I do an awful lot of charity work and I’m in Carrigoran every month. They love it. I’ve been going around to daycare centres, nursing homes, to disabled children all throughout my life”.

Data centre should profit East Clare THE proposed Ennis Data Centre, which is expected to create more than a thousand jobs during the three years it will be under construction, also needs to benefit the people of East Clare.

That’s the view of Fine Gael local election candidate Ger O’Halloran who says that Clare Co Council should prepare to improve the infrastructure on the eastern end of the site close to Junction 14.

The Quin native, who is running in the Killaloe Municipal District, says that the opportunities created by the data centre should not just be confined to Ennis and for this to happen some infrastructural work needed to be undertaken.

"I am calling on Clare County Council to acknowledge that the infrastructure to the east of the site needs to be addressed. There will be many suppliers bringing material to the site and this will lead to extra volumes of articulated trucks and heavy machinery on the R352,” he explained.

He added, "The Council needs to engage with communities like Clooney and Bodyke to establish what improvements and safety measures are needed along the roads in their area."

RECEPTION FOR SPANISH SCHOOLS

THE Deputy Mayor of Ennis, Paul Murphy, welcomed a delegation of ten school principals from Spain to a civic reception at Waterpark House, Drumbiggle on Tuesday.

The event was organised

by Clare Language Centre in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce. Each year thousands of students from Spain visit Ennis to learn English at Clare Language Centre - as well as to work, study and take part in a cultural exchange.

Fitness circuits and trikes at Lee's Road STUART HOLLY

HREE new fitness circuits for walkers and athletes of all abilities have been introduced to the 130-acre woodland at Active Ennis John O’Sullivan Park, Lees Road.

The Fartlek Interval Training System features colour-coded posts located throughout the woodland, with each one dictating relevant programmes and exertion level guides. The new system has been delivered with funding of €10,000 received under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme with an additional €10,000 being funded by Clare County Council.

Fartlek, a Swedish term meaning “speed play”, is a form of continuous interval or speed training that allows the athlete to run at varying intensity levels over varying distances.

Meanwhile, funding has been provided through the Healthy Ireland Fund towards the provision of three all-terrain wheelchairs, two of which are based in Active Ennis John O Sullivan Park, Lees Road and one in Active Kilrush Sports Complex.

Known as Mountain Trikes, the wheelchairs enable people with disabilities to tackle challenging surfaces with confidence and safety.

2019 CANDIDATES TAKE SHAPE

HE picture is becoming clearer ahead of the 2019 local elections with a number of candidates (and parties) throwing their hats in the ring.

Lahinch Seaworld and Leisure Centre General Manager, Joe Garrihy will represent Fine Gael in May’s local elections. A native of Lisdoonvarna, Garrihy joins sitting councillor Bill Slattery on the party ticket in the Ennistymon electoral area. He first became a member of Fine Gael two months ago and was approached before Christmas to consider contesting the local elections.

Fine Gael have also selected sitting councillor John Crowe and former Clare minor hurler Garret McPhillips

as their Shannon Municipal District candidates for May’s local elections.

Cllr Pat Burke chaired the selection convention which took place at Treacys Oakwood Hotel on Thursday night. The directive from Fine Gael HQ was to select two candidates, with only two nominees there was no contest however party members expressed their desire for an extra candidate to be fielded in South Clare.

Meanwhile, 20 years on from contesting her last local election, Betty Walsh is back but with a different party. In 1999, Betty polled 397 first preference votes for The Labour Party in Killaloe and this year she returns to action with the Social Democrats in the Shannon MD.

Mayor of Ennis Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy said, “The importance of these new fitness circuits and mountain trikes for all age groups cannot be emphasised enough and this investment in our recreational facilities ensures even more opportunities for members of the community to benefit from regular exercise activity.”

National Sherry Fitz award for Ennis-based property advisor TIERNAN O'Malley of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon in Ennis is celebrating with his colleagues after winning the Sherry Fitzgerald countrywide CX Award, which is awarded based on customer feedback given by purchasers and vendors.

Property advisor Tiernan was chosen from more than 90 nationwide offices and the Crusheen man, along with his colleague Danielle Kavanagh were both among 12 agents up for the top award having each winning a monthly award in 2018.

He received the prestigious award at the annual Sherry Fitzgerald conference held in Kilkenny last week, where offices from all regions in Ireland were represented. Former taoiseach Enda Kenny and retired Ennis businessman Dermot McMahon, the first franchisee of Sherry Fitzgerald, were among those to take the stage at the ceremony.

Tiernan, who has worked at Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon for five years this month, told The Clare Echo, "When my name was called out it was a bit of a surprise to be honest."

He added, "It was nice to be recognised. I was given the award but from start to finish it's a team effort from everyone in the office."

ILLEGAL parking outside Spanish Golf Club is to be monitored with signage to be installed shortly.

Cllr Michael Hillery requested measures be taken by Clare County Council “to prevent illegal parking in the interest of safety” at the car park in front of Spanish Point Golf Club. The local authority has confirmed it will “erect signage at this location indicating that no overnight parking is allowed”.

Speaking at last Wednesday’s meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Hillery stated that he had raised this issue on several occasions.

“There was illegal encampment for a week during the winter period and the area is under massive pressure during the summer”, he flagged. “We get a lot of criticism when these people pull in and stay there for a week or two. I know it’s happening in other areas of the county too,” the Fianna Fáil councillor added.

“Spanish Point at this stage is pristine”, Cllr Christy Curtin gushed. “They are very protective, they are a model community group and they should be supported,” the Independent councillor commented when seconding the motion.

'Shannon would benefit from spur railway line'

PROMINENT Clare businessman has declared a spur rail line to Shannon Airport would result in increased passengers and more people staying in the West of Ireland.

Jackie Whelan is the owner of the West Clare Railway, Tullagower Quarries and alongside his wife Pauline is the co-owner of The Railway Bar in Ennis. Speaking to The Clare Echo, he highlighted the benefits a rail spur would bring to the region. “All you have to do is put down the line (from an existing station), I know the land has to be bought from the farmers. There’s plenty money there to extend Luas lines and every other kind of line in Dublin there should be plenty money to put a spur line into Shannon. Clare County Council are the people that are making the most money out of the rates from Shannon, themselves, Shannon Group and the Government should be able to divide the money equally between the three of them and put in the spur line, no more buts about it.

“There’s people coming into my bar from America, I’m just after talking to one of them as I came in here, he said ‘I never knew that

y o u could fly directly into Shannon’...You have Kerry, Clare and Galway right under your nose. With a spur line into Shannon you could go into any of the three or stay in Clare by having your facility there. All they have to do is buy the land”.

According to the 79-year old “wartime baby”, two drivers and a security guard would suffice in terms of staff.

2018 was Shannon Airport busiest year this decade. Passenger numbers increased to over 1.86 million and overall it represents a growth of 33 percent since Shannon separated from the DAA. However with Dublin Airport welcoming 31.5 million passengers in 2018, its highest ever, Whelan stated the spur line would close the gap.

A native of Shragh, Jackie praised management of the Airport for making the move to separate from the DAA and their work since. “There’s enough industry in Shannon to prop up the Airport, if it came down to brass tax, if half the rates for four or five years was given to a spur line in-

stead of it all going to Clare County Council you’d soon put a line there. It’s going to be a massive facility for the industrial estate because half the people driving in there could come by train and leave their cars at home, the carbon footprint is reduced by 20 percent at least”.

Back in 2001, The Irish Independent reported that the Government were giving “serious consideration” to a rail spur linking Shannon Airport to Galway and Limerick. At the time, a partnership comprised of the Mid-West Regional Authority, Clare and Limerick County Councils, Limerick Corporation, Shannon Development, Aer Rianta, Shannon Chamber of Commerce and Iarnród Éireann, claimed the benefits would far outweigh the "modest" cost of the project.

Six years later, Iarnród Éireann carried out a feasibility study on the spur rail link.

It concluded that the rail link would need to be directed to Limerick resulting in a high capital cost, adding that the “overall benefits are small”.

Anger at vitamin VAT hike CLARE businesses have hit out at the proposed 23 per cent VAT hike on health supplements and insist Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe is facing growing pressure to reverse the imposition.

Sally Smith, owner of Open Sesame, has been in business for 31 years with two branches employing six full time and four part time staff. After three decades in business, Sally feels that this is one of the biggest challenges the health food industry has ever faced.

“We have heard from several customers who say they are facing a massive increase in their monthly health food supplements bill thanks to the proposed 23 per cent VAT rate from March 1.”

The Irish Health Trade Association (IHTA), representing producers and distributers, said the introduction of VAT would have a major effect on the old and the sick.

Sally has rejected a statement by Mr Donohoe who said the Revenue Commissioners came up with the VAT increase through interpretation of the tax code and he had to accept their decision as his “hands were tied". “His hands are not tied. The minister is sitting on his hands,” she told The Clare Echo. Sally says a similar move to put VAT on herbal teas was reversed in 2014 by a brief new piece of legislation which kept the zero rate in place. She said the minister could easily take similar action this time, and needs to do so to save jobs.

Slattery confirmed an event licence is not needed for the closure.

Fianna Fáil’s Richard Nagle flagged the importance of consulting with Transport Infrastructure Ireland as part of the proposal. “There will be media coverage from all over the world. I appreciate it may not be possible for the three or four days to close the street”.

He praised those responsible for the works carried out in preparation of the tournament which will be hosted by Paul McGinley.

“A blueprint was set with the Fleadh in Ennis, it showed how towns and village can be opened up, why not do the same for Lahinch, they’re coming for help, the County Council might implement it”, Cathaoirleach of the West Clare MD, Cllr Ian Lynch stated.

Council Director, Leonard Cleary praised the professionalism and approach of the Lahinch vendors. “I would propose Clare County Council meet with the business people. If it is an evening proposal, there may be some leeway but we will have to speak with all stakeholders”. Cleary added, “It is important the community embraces The Irish Open”.

He asked councillors to understand Lahinch would be prioritised ahead of other areas between now and July for road and repair works. “In order to make it happen as an event, you need a lot of civil works, a huge amount of work is required. There will be a prioritisation of Irish Open works ahead of others.

This is a world event and we will be on a world stage”.

Leonard praised executive engineer, Morgan Lahiffe for his efforts to date.

Speaking to The Clare Echo during his last visit to the county, Paul McGinley (pictured) emphasised the role Lahinch and its people will play in The Irish Open.

“We all know how great the town of Lahinch is with the pubs and restaurants and the craic with everything t h at goes on there and I think that’s a big part of the success that we’re trying to build, as much as the golf is important and front and centre and always will be, it’s important that there’s lots of other activities going on for other people to enjoy”.

AST Wednesday evening saw the doors of Ennis National School thrown open for the inaugural International Fair Day. Originally the brainchild of Ms Ciara Stack, the occasion proved to be an outstanding success with large crowds in attendance.

The spacious school hall was filled to capacity with over 20 stands displaying the variety of cultures that are now part of the school, and indeed of the wider community.

Flags, maps, bunting, traditional costumes and all manner of eats and drinks were the order of the day. There were performances of dance and music as well with the school’s famous traditional band providing a pleasant backdrop to the evening’s entertainment.

Countries represented on the night were: Bangladesh, Basque Region, Moldova, Russia, Poland, Italy, Thailand, China, USA, Nigeria, Sudan, Uzbekistan, Latvia, Croatia, Holland, Scotland and Morocco.

Speaking afterwards, School Principal Brian Troy declared the initiative “a triumph” and predicted that a repeat occasion next year was certainly on the cards. He was fulsome in his praise of the committee of staff members who showed wonderful initiative to guide and drive this project and to all the parents who displayed their cultures to the school community.

“It’s marvellous to have such a positive message to send out to all our pupils and parents. We have in excess of 30 nationalities in our school at present and we are delighted to be able to showcase the majority of them here tonight”, he added.

’M not gonna lie, I’m happy to see the back of January! It’s definitely my least favourite month and I think I’ve always felt that way! It was made a

This month, I’m traveling a little and really looking forward to it. I wish I could do more of it but it’s a major operation trying to maneuver smallies! I was lucky enough to escape to London this week and I got to meet the fabulous Trinny Woodall! For those of you who don’t know Trinny she is an English TV Celebrity, fashion and make-over advisor, designer, television presenter, author and Founder of TRINNY LONDON. I’ve been a huge fan since my sister in law June told me to follow her for the OOTD’s alone and she doesn’t disappoint! Her delivery style on her popular video content never ceases

’HALLORAN & Griffin Ltd are preparing this week to celebrate 25 years in operation. In that quarter of a century, much has changed in the business of providing top quality furniture to the people of West Clare, however one thing that has remained constant is a focus on customer service delivered by a family-run unit.

“Dad is the O’Halloran half and Joe Griffin is the Griffin half. Dad is retired now so I’m taking over the O’Halloran side,” begins proprietor Vinnie O’Halloran, son of Vincent.

The three of them along with employee Marty Hall form the tight-knit and knowledgable team at O’Halloran & Griffin.

Vinnie brings us back to the foundation of the Kilrush-based business which he is at the helm of along with co-founder Joe Griffin, following on from his father Vincent’s semi-retirement. And while Vincent is in essence retired, Vinnie laughs, “Oh yeah, he’s in and out every day, checking up on me, making sure I haven’t the place closed.”

shop in Kilrush years ago, they used to do furniture, hardware and electrical.

“So Dad used to work in the furniture and electrical side and Joe used to work in the hardware side of it. Donnellan’s went into liquidation in November 1993 and closed.

We opened in February ‘94.”

Vinnie explains that the foundation of O’Halloran & Griffin Ltd happened following a chance conversation with suppliers to Donnellan’s. “Dad and Joe hadn’t really any notion of opening up on their own until one of the suppliers who dealt with Donnellans spoke to him.

“That put the idea into his head and Dad said it to Joe then, so the two of them took the chance and they opened up.”

O’Halloran & Griffin opened for trading in February 1994 on the Kilkee Road - in the unit previously occupied by Kilrush businessman Seán Clancy - and began renting the premises. “Seán had a tile shop here before then. Then we bought it after the first year, and we’ve been in the same building since 1994.”

The family-run business has since then experienced the highs and lows of operating a business in West Clare. This Monday, February 11, they celebrate 25 years in business and Vinnie admits there’s a great sense of pride among everyone involved that they’ve reached such a momentus landmark.

“Oh yeah. Especially since things crashed in 2007, 2008,” says Vinnie.

He continues, “There were a few years there when we weren’t sure whether we’d be open or closed so it was tough enough for a long time. It started picking up about three or four years ago and it’s been coming back steadily since then. For a while we thought we’d be lucky to see 20 years so there’s huge pride, yeah, that we’ve made the 25.”

As one of the businesses that managed to adapt through the recession, Vinnie acknowledges that many weren’t so lucky. And while that has made the market less competitive to an extent, Vinnie says that changes in consumer habits have brought about a surge in online competition.

“In the meantime the online sales have taken up the slack. I suppose, back here in West Clare, people still like to go into a shop for furniture but there’s definite-

ly growing competition for online sales.”

While they will be offering customers a sale next week to mark the anniversary, Vinnie says the team will quietly celebrate 25 years together. Looking ahead to the future and the possibility of another 25 years, he jokes, “I’m gone fair bald at the minute but we’ll struggle on for another bit”.

“On behalf of myself and Joe, I just want to thank everyone past and present who have been customers over the years and the suppliers as well. Most of them we have been dealing with since day 1 and many of them for over 20 years so they’re a big part of it as well.”

LL of us, with different dreams, different goals and different perspectives, wake up each morning with a purpose or new goal or idea and continue on our different journey’s of life.

All of us are unique and distinctive from one another, yet there are similar things which brings us all together irrespective of all the differences and contrasts we have.

If personalities or being make us different and unique, emotions make us alike. If belief ’s, religion and none divide us, humanity brings us together. If choices and goal’s make us different, love makes us alike. If countries and boundaries divide us, the world brings us together. The focus of everything that we seek is the same. The road we journey on may be different but our destinations are the same.

We all strive for love, care and mercy alike, we are all afraid of being left out or turned away, we all want a life worth living, we all want unconditional love, we all want genuine trusting, caring, loving friendships and relationships. We all want real love, care and mercy. The recipe for love, care and mercy in fact, is simply there in our hearts, waiting to be brought out in each one of us through our eyes, face and actions, to be shared, to be given, to be felt and to be expressed, without greed, without selfishness, without judgement, without jealousy, without hate and without negativity. All we need is just a little love, all we need is just a little care, all we need is a little mercy, all we need is just a little encouragement, all we need is just a little kindness, all we need is just a little respect, all we need is just a little faith, and the world is a place of love, care and mercy!

Today, as we look round the world and see how much unnecessary suffering and death there is, the many ways in which human beings are been destroyed, perhaps we could pause and take stock of our own lives. We may protest that we do not perpetrate the kind of horrors we have seen in many parts of our world or indeed at times in our country, but every time we fail to accord others their dignity, every time we close our hearts to others’ needs, everytime we disrespect others, everytime we do not show love, care and mercy, we chip away at something important. That the most beau-

tiful of all the beauties God created, is the human person. May we never forget that.

I believe....

A prayer about what someone believed life to be for them, I found in my Nana Scully’s prayerbook goes as follows, “I believe through my experiences of living on my journey of life so far, that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them. I believe that no matter how much you care, some people just don’t care back. I believe that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. I believe that it’s not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.

I believe that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you’d better know something. I believe that it’s not what happens to people that’s important.

It’s what they do about it. I believe that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life. I believe that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them. I believe that either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I believe that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place. I believe that learning to forgive takes practice. I believe that money is a lousy way of keeping score. I believe that sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel. I believe that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I believe that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them and less to do with how many years you’ve lived. I believe that you should never tell a child their dreams are unlikely or outlandish. Few things are more humiliating, and what a tragedy it would be if they believed you. I believe that no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that. I believe that it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself. I believe that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief. I

believe that just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other and just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do.

I believe that sometimes you have to put the individual ahead of their actions. I believe that you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever. I believe that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will eventually get hurt and you will hurt in the process. I believe that there are many ways of falling and staying in love. I believe that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don’t even know you. I believe that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help. I believe most of all that writing, as well as talking, can ease emotional pains. I believe that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. I believe that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon. I believe the appearances you give from your face return to you in the way people treat you from what they have seen in your face. Give out love, kindness, truth, prayer, care and mercy.”

Thought for the week

As your thought for the week, don’t lose sight of what’s important. Don’t lose hope when life gets tough. Don’t give up on your

dreams for the future. Don’t sell yourself short in life. Don’t forget how to hug, to laugh, to smile. Don’t be too proud to cry.

Don’t be hateful or hurtful. Don’t forget to say, “thank you”, “I am sorry”, “I love you” and “I will pray for you” each and every day. Don’t expect there will always be a tomorrow. Don’t forget that one small kindness pays you back two fold. Everybody has something to offer. Indeed, most of us have many things to offer and, in a lot of cases, special expertise is not required.

A face of love cures all ill’s. We are all capable of giving that which people need most of all: Love. Love translates into time, service and the sharing of oneself. Don’t give up. Share the love, share your love. Be a face of love. And remember that there is no better thing that you can do in life than to love someone or pray for someone or care for some one or be there for someone.

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can. I pray that each of you that have read this thought for the week today and on other.

In a Dáil question to Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe, Deputy Carey asked for invasive scrub be removed from the area surrounding the Bronze Age monument and that an information table which acts as a self-guided trail up to the hillfort be reinstated.

In a written response, Minister Donohoe said that Coillte owned the woodland surrounding the hillfort and if the scrub is on State property, it would be a matter for Coillte to address.

An inside look at Clare’s political spectrum

Beware mindless headline chasers on your doorstep

A

S MANY households will attest to, it’s election season. Many Clare residents have already had an election hopeful knock on their door.

What makes this a particularly interesting election season is that people should expect hopefuls, or their canvassers, at their door contesting local, European and general elections soon. True, there is no general election planned until 2020, officially anyway. That doesn’t mean those hoping to relocate their business address to Kildare Street, Dublin 2 aren’t out pounding pavement already. All this means that it can be confusing times on the doorsteps for beleaguered residents trying to make sense of party policies, potential allegiances, personal red lines and trying to figure out just what an MEP does. Some candidates are well aware of such confusion and look to make headlines on issues that, should they be elected for the office they are aiming for, they could not possibly do anything about. Others are as confused by the issues and the differences between the various aspects of Government themselves, truth be told.

Firstly, the local election candidate is the one most of us will see over the next four months. They should focus on local issues. They have the power to set the county development plan, highlight road improvements, liaise with Irish Water on their constituents’ behalf, raise questions on issues such as waste management and planning and give

advice to citizens regarding the various functions of the local authority and how to go about applying for local authority grants or applications. However, beware the local council candidate talking about tackling the national debt, or fixing the health service. Although I admire that one would have an interest in these fields, the local councillor can do next near nothing on any of these fronts. Most of the time it’s mindless headline chasing to build a profile. There’ll always be a few of those but beware the candidates who think that getting elected to Clare County Council means that Donald Trump will suddenly start reading their tweets.

General election candidates are something most people seem to get. After all, TDs get the most airtime and therefore most of us are aware of what their job entails. Theirs is the responsibility of making and amending national laws by passing pieces of legislation.

Like their local counterparts, they are also advocates for their constituents with the permanent branches of Government like Government departments, the passport office, Revenue and the like.

All too often though, our TDs do get wrapped up in local issues like getting pot holes filled. These should be matters for local councillors but often the local TD wants the glory and publicity of being the local problem solver. Beware TDs that fixate on such local issues as well as the funding for the local sports hall but then avoid at all costs issues

like their thoughts on climate change, Brexit or how exactly they would improve the health service; all the while keeping the public finances in check.

Lastly, there will be MEP candidates. You’re unlikely to meet many of these anywhere but Ennis, Shannon or Kilrush town centres or maybe at a GAA match during the campaign. Given that they have all of Munster to get around, it means that door-to-door canvassing isn’t an option for them. You will see them on TV and hear them on radio.

Theirs is a role few seem to grasp, understandably. There is very little coverage of the goings on in the European Parliament. Even dedicated political programmes like The Week in Politics rarely show any events from Brussels.

The role of an MEP is one of a legislator as well, but on a Pan-European basis. They discuss things like the Common Agricultural Policy, Environmental Standard, International Free Trade Agreements and Fiscal Policy rules of the Euro zone. The way the European Parliament works is very different to that of Dáil Éireann.

Firstly, there are no parties, as such, but groupings. These groupings are made up of like-minded MEPs from various countries but there is no whip system that meaning the policies of one MEP and another from the same group can be quite different. They have no say in national parliamentary business like social policy, or health policy. Their role is also a lot ambassadorial and diplomatic. Because of the lack of a whip system, an MEP must forge allegiances and be pragmatic in order to get European legislation passed that is in their region’s interest.

Now that you know what each of the candidate should or shouldn’t be talking about, be ready to grill them on the doors. So next time you get a council candidate talking about what they’re going to do about Brexit or an MEP talking about fixing pot holes, get them to cop themselves on and talk about the issues they can actually do something about.

IAN O‘BrOIN continues his tour of the four corners of Clare through history, this week going through the archives to visit 1971 where West Clare heavily features.

QUILTY KEEP BATTERING AWAY In 1971, the GAA imposed a ban on a type of set dancing in Clare known as ‘Battering’. This tradition proliferated in Quilty at the time and observers held great admiration for its required skillset and application. Battering was a modification to the Caledonian set dance in which a treble clicking of the heel to each beat took place. After an RTE investigation on the banning of the dance in County Clare, locals were astounded at the derision and guile of the GAA. They could see no alternative to the highly inventive and rhythmic flow of battering. Despite the banning of battering in 1971, the tradition secretly continued and set dancers from Quilty won the county championships by implementing the technique. This shows a similarity of strength in Irish traditions such as set dancing in County Clare over fourty years ago.

Very little has changed!

ELECTRICITY COMES TO LOOP HEAD

The importance and function of lighthouses such as the one located in Loop Head have much less significance to the modern commuter.

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean perched on the most westerly sea cliff in Clare, the lighthouse was built in 1670 to accommodate ships looking to dock at night as they made their way up the stormy coast.

Strategically positioned, the lighthouse has a line of sight extending all the way out to Kerry Head and Dingle and all the way up along the Clare coast. Originally, the light house constituted of a cottage where the light keeper lived with his family. Inside the cottage there was a stone stairway which led up to a coal burning brazier which kept the tower alight.

In 1971, the physically taxing duties of burning coal were redesigned and the lighthouse was officially powered by electricity.

The Loop Head lighthouse and the remains of the cottage are open to the public in the months of summer.

It is undoubtedly an interesting piece of Clare history!

CLARE INTER-SOCCER ROOTS Clare soccer lags behind the larger, more highly populated counties when it comes to national competitions. Although laden with talent from schoolboy level to junior, the likes of Dublin and Cork always propose a daunting challenge. In 1967 Clare established its first youths soccer team, emerging into the inter-county platform with a chip on its shoulder. As little as four years later in 1971, Clare won their first Inter-County Youths Cup. Several players from Ennis club Hermitage FC were the backbone of the team, Stephen Kenny captaining the team to victory against the Athletic Union League in Dublin. Noel Ryan who eventually went on to play for Cork Celtic and enjoyed many years in the League of Ireland was deemed one of the star performers of the 1970/71 campaign. Ryan put two away against Waterford in the semi-final and managed to score Clare’s second in the final. Since then we have seen an exponential growth in the popularity of Clare Soccer with the advent of new clubs and better training facilities. For decades Clare soccer has battled against representatives of GAA clubs banning the practice of participating in both GAA and soccer considered a ‘foreign sport’.

MISSING A FORTUNE To end on a quirky note, in 1971 a farmer died leaving a Will of over €333,000. Martin Howley was from Murroughloohy South, Ballyvaughan, Co Clare. It is common practice for lost or misplaced Wills to make their way to the Dublin Probate Office. This case was no different to the countless others and the Will was recently lodged where it will be looked at by the office. Imagine knowing that a piece of paper containing hundreds of thousands was stowed away where you live!

Digital funding for older people

FUNDING of €28,000 has been allocated to provide digital familiarisation courses targeting older members of the population in Clare, according to Minister Pat Breen.

The digital familiarisation programme for Clare will be of particular benefit to people over 55 years who wish to become more familiar with the digital world.

Minister Breen said, “Clare County Council are committed to rolling out the programme in multiple locations.

The programmes will cover topics such as familiarisation with technology and practical uses of tablets and smart phones; connecting communities, families and friends; the internet as a source of information, and access to and using online services.

“While the digital world is still relatively new, it is also a significant part of day to day living and communications.

It is therefore important that access to it and an understanding of how best to utilise it is available to people of all ages. I am therefore pleased that funding has been made available for this programme,” added Minister Breen.

“The programme currently being developed in Clare will be delivered in an interesting informal manner covering practical and informative topics.

These classes and workshops will also be a social outlet for participants.”

Initially targeting the over 55s sector, which makes up 27% of the county’s population, this model will be used to deliver digital programmes to other sectors of society going forward.

LARE got their league campaign back on track following a narrow win over reigning champions Kilkenny in Cusack Park on Sunday.

The Banner men needed to bounce back after their disappointing performance against Tipperary last time out and duly delivered by outclassing the Cats almost from start to finish. Colm Galvin produced a master-class in midfield scoring three points from play and his ability to read the game set the platform from which Clare could launch attacks.

Clare have vowed to look at their discipline after this outing after conceeding too many scoreable frees, and Kilkenny scored their opening three points of the contest through placed balls from Kevin Kelly while Clare hit back through Colm Galvin and Colin Guilfoyle. The Cats raced into a three-point lead with two more scores through Ger Aylward (two) before Clare responded through Ian Galvin. Clare then scored the opening goal when a long a delivery from Colm Galvin landed on the edge of the square and John Conlon was first to react before dispatching the ball past Eoin Murphy. Clare would not relenquish the lead after this, and maintain a straglehold over Brian Cody’s men in the league with four wins in a row.

Clare led by 1-06 to 0-05 after 19 minutes with scores through Peter Duggan (two) and Diarmuid Ryan but the Cats continued to chip away with Kevin Kelly (free), Conor Delaney and James Maher frees. Shane Golden broke up the Kilkenny scoring spree before Billy Ryan put just one point between the sides. The last two points of the half were shared thanks to Colm Galvin and James Maher and the score at the interval was 1-08 to 0-10 in favour of Clare.

Clare started the second half with more intent scoring four of the opening five points through the impressive Colm Galvin, Duggan (two frees) and Conlon. Another placed ball from Kevin Kelly kept Kilkenny ticking over before Clare extended their lead thanks to a great move involving Cathal Malone, Conor Cleary, Golden and David Fitzgerald who delivered a perfect hand-pass to Diarmuid Ryan for a great point to lift the home crowd.

A couple of Kilkenny points then followed before Clare scored their second goal when Colm Galvin broke onto a loose ball before laying off to Podge Collins who made no

mistake in rifling the ball past Eoin Murphy.

The Banner were starting to flex their muscles and scored the next three points thanks to Diarmuid Ryan, Ian Galvin and Golden.

Kilkenny to their credit didn’t throw in the towel and scored four unanswered points through Aylward, John Donnelly and Kelly (two frees) to leave the score at 2-16 to 0-18 after 57 minutes.

Clare led by four points going into added time when Kilkenny were awarded a late free and Kevin Kelly rifled the ball into the back of the net, which proved to be the last score of this gripping contest.

When referee Paud O’Dwyer blew the final whistle there was a massive sigh of relief from the Clare crowd who saw their team pick up a vital win to keep their hopes of reaching the knock-out stages alive.

The likes of Shane Golden, Diarmuid Ryan, Cathal Malone and Rory Hayes will look back on their day’s work with satisfaction and will hope to build on their performances with more league starts, while John Conlon played a captain’s part when he scored a vital goal in the first half. The suspended Tony Kelly will be available for selection when Clare take on Cork in Pairc Ui Rinn on February 16.

The match was due to be played at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, however the surface at the newly developed ground has been deemed unacceptable following Cork’s double-header last Sunday, with major divots emerging on the playing surface during both matches.

Limerick lower Clare CAMOGIE: Limerick 1-14 Clare 0-10

CLARE fell to their second defeat of the 2019 Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League on Saturday evening at the Gaelic Grounds.

A disappointing display from the Clare senior camogie side in which they scored three points from play in 60 minutes resulted in their defeat at the hands of a more cohesive Limerick unit inspired by Sarah Carey, Niamh Mulcahy, Muireann Creamer, Karen O’Leary and Rebecca Delee.

Having almost slipped up last weekend in Whitegate when hosting Offaly, Clare faced a more difficult task at the Gaelic Grounds as they aimed to put back-to-back wins together. It was not until Sophie O’Callaghan goaled on the 36th minute that Limerick began to shake off the Clare challenge but the result was never in doubt such was the Banner’s lack of threat.

In the opening half Fiona Lafferty hit Clare’s solitary score from play in the 25th minute, their remaining six scores were Amy Keating placed balls. In comparison Limerick scored one free and six from play with a wide range of contributors. On five occasions the sides were level during the first half but the hosts were better at crafting moves which resulted in more opportunities.

As Andrew Larkin resumed the game, Mairead Scanlon added a Clare point in the first attack to give hope that Ger O’Connell’s side would find their feet. Such hopes would quickly evaporated as the Treaty County hit 1-06 without reply. Adare’s Sophie O’Callaghan kicked the sliotar past Sarah Loughnane, the concession of the goal is one that should annoy Clare as Dearbhla Egan was allowed pick the ball from a ruck easily and defenders were found out of position in the subsequent attack.

For the second weekend in a row, Clare went 23 minutes without a score in the second half. Their heads dropped once O’Callaghan’s kick hit the

net and although they got two of the final three scores, the damage was done.

Limerick’s July 2016 senior championship win over Clare proved that two years on from their All-Ireland intermediate success they were now the better of the neighbours. It was a worrying sight for Clare camogie followers then and it remains the case. Declan Nash’s side have bypassed their neighbours. The gap seems to be widening, Limerick played as a team, they provided running options for every attack and did their utmost to regain possession once it was lost, Clare did not.

Lengthier prison sentences are handed down to repeat offenders in courts than those guilty of a once off, more often that not. You live and you learn but it seems that three games into their league campaign, Clare have not learned to shorten their hurley and instead prefer to get hooked and lose possession. This was just one reason why Sarah Loughnane had far more possession coming her way than she should have in the second half and is proving to be a launchpad for opposition scores.

O’Connell and his management are trying out different players which is welcome and ultimately in this sense they are making the most out of the league. However, their lack of an attacking threat remains and consideration should be given to moving Aoife Keane back to her more suited role in the forwards where she could be that threat.

They now have a three-week break before their final group game with Dublin which is plenty of time to make the necessary alterations and improvements within their panel.

Tubridy’s magic saves footballers

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Armagh 1-13 Clare 1-13

A LATE David Tubridy goal from long range earned Clare a draw with Armagh in the second round of the Allianz National Football League.

Clare picked up their first point of the 2019 Division 2 campaign when Doonbeg’s David Tubridy scored an additional time goal from the sideline to secure a valuable draw with Armagh.

Kieran McGeeney’s charges finished the game with 13 men, Jamie Clarke was dismissed in the first half while referee Cormac Reilly gave Aaron McKay his marching orders for a second bookable offence in the closing moments. The extra men would prove helpful for Clare in snatching the draw.

It was a nightmare start for the Banner as Dermot Coughlan picked up a serious leg injury seconds after the ball was thrown in, the Kilmurry Ibrickane youngster was stretchered off the field after a delay.Cian O’Dea operated in a sweeper role for Colm Collins’ side, his movement created many chances for Clare but the final product was not up to standard.

A strong finish to the opening half saw Clare notch 1-03 in succession, leaving Armagh with a 1-08 1-06 advantage at the break.

Clare did go in front in the second half but then allowed Armagh fire three points on the trot. The 2002 All-Ireland champions increased their lead to four points but then up stepped Tubridy with 1-01 in the closing minutes to settle the tie and secure their first point of the campaign while for Armagh it is two draws in as many weekends. Cork travel to Cusack Park next Sunday while Armagh are on the road to Meath.

were looking good for the win, and despite good Kerry play early in the second, a Laurie Ryan goal restored a five-point point lead for Clare. However Clare could only back that goal up with one more point in the second half and Kerry continued to chip away with Sarah Houlihan the last four points of the game to snatch a draw for Kerry.

f she can’t see it, she can’t be it” goes the slogan of 20x20, an initiative launched last October with the objective of increasing media coverage, participation and attendance at female sporting events.

It’s aim is to see a 20 percent increase by 2020 across all three areas. The Clare Echo has sanctioned a request by this writer to commence a fortnightly series that will highlight different personalities who through playing, mentoring, administrating or promoting are flying the flag for female sports. The series will increase the amount of media coverage and subsequently our hope is to see greater participation and attendance at women’s sport.

On December 18, the views of Louise Galvin when speaking on Today with Sean O’Rourke struck a chord. Louise is one of the country’s most versatile sportspeople, a winner of multiple national Superleague cups with UL Huskies, she played senior football for Kerry for five years and since 2013 has turned to rugby where she has represented her country.

“A personal gripe that I really have is if you go into any sports store here, you have the male sports stars be it the rugby players, the county GAA players or international sporting stars wearing the different brands but if you look across at the female section it’s the popstars or models that you don’t even know their name, we need a cultural shift where female sports stars are being put up there by sponsorship or different clothing companies so that young girls can look up and say I want to be that”.

Also, one Dublin Ladies footballer questioned why reports from women’s games tend to be about morale victories without critique. Inter-county players are putting in huge efforts regardless of the sport or gender, while they deserve an equal amount of coverage, this in turn leads to the same standard of criticism being applied. ‘Brave Banner’ should not be handed out as a headline for our Clare ladies footballers or camogie team just for the sake of it.

50,141 people attended the All-Ireland Ladies Football final in 2018 as Dublin defeated Cork. That’s the marquee fixture when droves of underage teams from across the country are encouraged to head to Croke Park with their clubs. The figure is brilliant but how many people were in Whitegate to see Clare play Offaly in the second round of the camogie league and what level of support did the Laurie Ryan-captained ladies footballers have for their opening league game in Doonbeg at the weekend?

To stagger a guess, probably 500 between them.

In an age of gender quotas and calls for equal pay, the time has come to start giving women’s sport the respect it deserves. Over the next few months, The Clare Echo will sit down and tell the stories of some of the county’s leading lights, it’s our way of standing up and speaking out for 20x20.
