a noisy fun walk against the proposed construction of a biogas plant in their town. The case now resides with An Bord Pleanála and a decision is expected early in the New Year

EVERAL retail and hospitality businesses across Co Clare have been forced to close their doors temporarily. Unprecedented levels of COVID-19 infection all over the county has left businesses unable to keep their doors open with staff either testing positive for the virus or designated as a close contact of a confirmed case. Preliminary analysis shows that between 1,100 and 1,500 daily COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed across the Mid-West region surpassing the previous record of 902 daily cases recorded on January 2nd 2021. Despite having a staff of 75, co-owners of the four star Shannon Springs Hotel Dermot Kelly and John Gavin admitted, “we simply do not have enough staff to open and run our hotel” as the town grapples with very high levels of community transmission which also prompted The Goalpost Bar operated by Wolfe Tones na Sionna to close.

MAJOR sporting events are set to return to Co Clare this coming year, writes Páraic McMahon. Five star Dromoland Castle is on course to be named as the venue for the return of the Women’s Irish Open, The Clare Echo has learned. Management of the hotel, Sport Ireland officials and Deputy Joe Carey (FG) have been involved in discussions to see the Irish Open’s return take place in Newmarket-on-Fergus. Most recent tournaments saw Kileen Castle in Meath as the venue in 2011 and 2012. Historically, the Ladies Irish Open has attracted some of the strongest golfers with the 2011 event seeing top professionals from Europe and America compete in the €400,000 Ladies European Tour event. Lahinch Golf Club famously hosted the DDF Irish Open in 2019 which was won by Jon Rahm. Hosting the event was heralded as a major advertisement for the county across the globe with the glorious sunshine adding to the occasion. The golf course, village and the wider west Clare region received worldwide exposure through Sky Sports and the Golf Channel, with pictures broadcast into 350 million homes.

For the first time in its forty five year history, O’Connor’s Texaco in Shannon closed on New Year’s Day amid a shortage of staff who were either self-isolating or awaiting a test result. The store reopened on Monday morning. Ennis bars including McHugh’s, the Abbey, Josie O’Shea’s, Taylor’s Bar and the Halfway House closed their doors in light of “close contacts” and “government restrictions”. Power’s Pub in Clarecastle was forced to stop pulling pints temporarily due to some positive cases in the village. The popular pub reopened on Tuesday evening. Due to staff being designated as close contacts, both Michael A’s Bar in Miltown Malbay and The Woodcross Bar in Cratloe were left with little option but to close for a number of days prior to New Year’s Eve celebrations. Similarly, The Creamery Bar and Restaurant in Bunratty had a number of staff unavailable to work because of the virus and closed until further notice. A high level of close contacts among staff resulted in The Sherwood Inn announcing that they would stay closed until Friday.
