lLIGHT UP: Thousands of people are expected to rise early on Saturday morning for the annual Darkness into Light walks. 550 people participated in the first Darkness into Light walk in Ennis in 2011, the number rose to over 3,500 in 2019. Now, after a two year hiatus, walks will be taking place in Ennis, Sixmilebridge and Kilmihil. For the first time, the community of Whitegate will also be holding a walk in memory of the late, Michael Hynes. Also for the first time, June Curtin will have a special Snamhaí Sasta in Spanish Point and Rosie McMahon will be hosting a swim at Ballyalla Lake in Ennis.The annual fundraising event is organised by Pieta, who provide life-saving support services for those in suicidal distress and who have been bereaved through suicide. Up to 200,000 people gathered around the globe in previous years to walk in solidarity with those experiencing dark times and the organisers are encouraging people to get their groups together once again. 'Pure evil' - Scarlett's grave desecrated and stolen from on three occasions

N EAST Clare mother has described as “pure evil” the actions of a woman who stole from and desecrated her daughter’s grave on three separate occasions.

At Killaloe District Court sitting in Ennis, Kirsty Donnellan told the court that she was "in a state of shock, anger and despair” when finding that her daughter, Scarlett's grave had been desecrated in May 2020. During the course of her victim impact statement, the mother of three told the court that eldest daughter, Scarlett (17) had died just 20 months prior to the thefts from her grave at Tulla graveyard.

Concerning the grave thefts, Mairead O'Sullivan (41) has entered 18 separate guilty pleas concerning charges of stealing goods with a combined value of €597.50 from graves at cemeteries at Drumcliffe and Templemaley outside Ennis and also from Tulla cemetery. There are 14 victims in the case as Ms O’Sullivan of Fergus View, Cappahard, Tulla Rd, Ennis stole from the same graves on a number of occasions.

In her statement, Ms Donnellan told the court: “For any parent to bury their child, it is the most distressing, traumatic event that one could ever have to face in their life, so for someone to literally disturb the grave and to steal items from it, that are sentimental, and represent something of that person,

that has meaning behind it, is extremely upsetting and the most hideous crime one could ever be a victim of."

Ms Donnellan stated that Scarlett “died tragically and unexpectedly in September 2018, to which I still await answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the causes that led her to her death, and as of yet, no inquest has been held due to various Gardai and other investigation”.

On discovering the first theft, Ms Donnellan recalled “still in the midst of my grieving, 20 months to the day after my daughter, Scarlett had died, I went to visit her grave.”

Ms Donnellan said: "I had planted two miniature yellow rose bushes on her grave a week or so previous as Scarlett’s favourite colour was yellow.

“However, on the day of May 16th 2020 on visiting my daughter’s grave, I was in a state of shock, anger and despair and was in tears to find two holes in her grave where Ms O’Sullivan had dug out the rose bushes from my daughter’s grave.

“This was not the only time my daughter’s grave was desecrated. Later during the Summer in July 2020, items were taken from my daughter’s grave. Again, I was left distressed, crying and my faith in humanity questioned as who, and why could someone carry out such an act of disrespect and pure evil.”

Ms Donnellan said that the thefts from Tulla graveyard continued despite the pleas she made on local and national media for them to stop. Ms Donnellan said: “My daughter Scarlett’s grave was targeted once again between April 13th and April 14th 2021.

Solicitor for Ms O’Sullivan, Tara Godfrey told Ms Donnellan said that her client wishes to offer her apology to her and the other victims. Judge Larkin said that she would adjourn the case to September 6th for a Probation Report on Ms O’Sullivan.

Attempts to progress the study have been ongoing for the past three years, Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) highlighted.

He recalled that an application for RRDF was put forward by the Council but was deemed not to be suitable.

“It is holding back huge development in these areas,” he remarked of the absence of wastewater infrastructure. Efforts by Cllr Talty were “trying to be creative with a solution,” Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) observed.

Director of Rural Development, Leonard Cleary acknowledged the frustration of councillors. He queried if Cllr Talty was still keen for the matter to be brought before Irish Water’s attention to which the Lahinch man replied, “It can’t do any harm to send it to Irish Water but that’s not a solution because they won’t do anything”.

Clare 'failed by ragged ambulance service' PÁRAIC MCMAHON

TOTAL rethink is needed regarding the operation of the National Ambulance Service, a Kilrush representative has stated.

Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly (FF) has been asked to initiate an independent review of the “grossly under resourcing of the National Ambulance Service, the suitability, effectiveness, efficiency of the current dynamic deployment system used by the NAS for deployment of services in Rural Ireland,” as proposed by Cllr Ian Lynch (IND).

Issues within the ambulance service have not been addressed during Lynch’s eight years on the County Council, he said. Numerous motions have been tabled “but it is falling on deaf ears,” he lamented. The impact of the under-resourced service is “massive”.

He stated, “The taxpayer expects a service, before international best practice was ever out there, dynamic deployment was simple, if the Kilrush ambulance was gone to Limerick then the Ennis ambulance covered it”.

Instances of a critical patient waiting an hour and a half for an ambulance emphasises “the system is not working. It is very clear it is not working, it is causing tremendous pain in the community.

A failed ambulance service is costing us money, it is high-time that the Minister took responsibility in his role,” the Kilrush man stated.

Speaking at a meeting of Clare County Council, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) told colleagues for every sitting of the HSE Regional Health Forum West he has to table a question on ambulance deployment.

An extra Clare based ambulance is needed, Murphy said, “Until it comes from the top down, we’ll be sitting looking for it to come”.

Ambulance service personnel are under unimaginable stress racing from one emergency to



another, Cllr Lynch added. “Our ambulance services are run ragged, they are drained”.

Three Clare based reps on Estuary taskforce

Pyrite problems Taoiseach will need getting worse 'contingency plan for

LARE IS suspected to be one of the worst affected counties in the country when it comes to pyrite.

350 local authority homes are affected by pyrite, a briefing between Clare County Council and members of the Clare Pyrite Action Group outlined in February while in the past week a spokesperson for the Council said up to 620 homes in Clare may be affected.

Research from the Pyrite Action Group has identified 1,000 homes, 18 affected estates, eight public buildings, and 350 of Clare County Council’s owned stock, which are showing signs that they were built with pyrite or other defective materials.

In an application for inclusion in the redress scheme last July, a figure of 53 properties in Clare were identified to date as affected or potentially affected by pyrite, five of which were in three different local authority built estates.

Explaining how the figure rose from 53 to 350, a Council spokesperson told The Clare Echo, “On the basis that all dwellings within an estate are likely to be constructed at the same time using

the same materials, it is reasonable to assume that potentially the entire estate could be affected. Applying this rationale to the properties identified above gives rise to the estimate of 350. This approach to estimating the potential scale of the problem was adopted in both Donegal and Mayo and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage have accepted that it is not possible to be definitive in this regard and that any estimates at this time may be subject to change”.

Delays have been experienced in the Council producing evidence of pyrite for its own stock. “The process of conclusively proving the presence of pyrite takes time with the process is ongoing; we anticipate a report with laboratory results will be available in the coming weeks,” the spokesperson stated.

Core testing of local authority houses should have commenced much sooner, Dr Martina Cleary, Chairperson of the Pyrite Action Group said. Issues such as Watery Rd in Ennis had been mooted for some time before the matter was taken on board, up to 34 houses there alone are part of the Clare figure.

A LISSYCASEY Councillor has revealed he is considering writing to the Taoiseach to ascertain what contingency plans are in place should there be “an outbreak of common sense” in the country.

Speaking at the May meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr PJ Kelly (FF) admitted that he was debating contacting his party leader, Micheál Martin (FF) amid ongoing frustration with the actions of civil servants in the country.

Senior executive officer with corporate services in Clare County Council, Ann Reynolds confirmed a cross-directorate team has been established to examine a previous motion from Cllr Liam Grant (GP) and identify the scope of work involved in changing the spelling of road signs to their preferred spelling in areas such as Lahinch, En-

nistymon, Corofin and Clonlara.

Reynolds explained that the cross-directorate input involves general design looking at the final mapping of electoral areas to define boundaries and settlement areas, roads department consulting with TII to review costings of signage replacement and corporate services who will compile the list of qualified electors and arrange the plebiscite which has to occur before the spellings can be amended. Only the general design team have commenced work at this stage, she said.

Cllr Grant sought an update at Tuesday’s meeting, “I would like to know what has been done to organise a plebiscite and what information has been gathered from TII,” he questioned. “It is not the first time and won’t be the last time I’ve brought this up. I know other councillors have brought it up in the past and haven’t gone anywhere, this is definitely something I won’t stop pursuing”.

A CLARE Senator has criticised the Secretary General at the Department of Health for the manner in which he handled the proposed secondment of Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan to Trinity College Dublin, writes Páraic McMahon.

In March, it was announced that Dr Holohan’s proposed role was intended to be a newly created position of Professor of Public Health Strategy and Leadership at Trinity College

Dublin. The plan was abandoned due to controversy over the proposed salary and how it would be funded.

On Wednesday morning, members of the Oireachtas Health Committee accused the Secretary General of the Department of Health Robert Watt of ‘seriously mishandling’ the proposed secondment.

Ennis reps call Minister Ryan slammed for action on for omitting LNDR crime rates

GARDAÍ in Ennis have been urged to consider the introduction of the ‘See Something Say Something’ initiative, writes Páraic McMahon.

Initially proposed by Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG), the initiative’s introduction is aspired to clamp down on anti-social behaviour in the county town and also increase the feeling of safety among the public.

See Something, Say Something was first launched in Ireland by Tralee Chamber Alliance in partnership with An Garda Síochána in January 2018. The project is for members of the public who ‘see something’ that might need Garda intervention, to ‘say something’ by texting a confidential line via a free text message which is received by a sergeant on duty and is then acted upon by local Gardaí.

Rising anti-social behaviour in Ennis was referenced by Cllr Pat Daly (FF) as he encouraged the public to use the Garda confidential line when they witness such behaviour, in order to try eliminate it. “In recent times Ennis has got bad publicity, a pet-

rol bomb was thrown into house and the drug situation in Ennis is very serious”. He added, “We saw what happened in Sligo and the damage it has done, don’t let the same happen to our beautiful town of Ennis”. Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) seconded his proposal, “we are all concerned, every town has its warts and all, we have to manage it as best we can”.

Senior executive officer with the Ennis Municipal District, Leonore O’Neill confirmed they had written to Ennis Garda Station following Cllr Flynn’s motion “to request that they consider introducing the See Something Say Something scheme which has been successfully launched in Tralee and Swords”. Superintendent John Galvin has confirmed he will liaise directly with the Ennis MD on the scheme.

Details of the rising crime as mentioned by Cllr Daly was labelled as “quite disturbing” by Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG). Gardaí held a workshop in April on the new initiative, he said. “We can’t let a small minority gain control by using fear”.

HASE 2 of the Limerick Northern Distributor Road (LNDR) is not included in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy; a plan that extends from now until 2040.

Uncertainty had previously clouded Phase 1 of the LNDR in the winter of 2021 before it received the go-ahead from the Government in February 2021.

Roadbridge, the construction firm which has now entered receivership were appointed by Limerick City and County Council for the contract following a competitive tendering process for the project costing around €29m.

Overall costs of the project are expected to be in the region of €58 and involve the construction of a new distributor road between Coonagh Roundabout on the Ennis Rd and the Knockalisheen Rd in the Moyross area on the northside of Limerick City. The road is a key element of the Limerick Regeneration Framework Implementation Plan.

Omission of Phase 2 from the latest draft has arisen following a ministerial directive by Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan (GP). This move is “very concerning,” Clare TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) stated.

“To outrightly omit this project now, in 2022, could have very serious negative outcomes for the people who will live here for the next two decades and beyond”. He warned that it could lead to the creation of a “road to nowhere”.

Mayor of Clare, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) was shocked by the omission of what he regarded an important piece of road infrastructure in the LSMATS. "I believe it's a serious mistake to exclude it. You cannot have one half

of a road built going nowhere. You have 3,500 people coming into the University of Limerick every morning, and there are plans to actually increase the student population at UL. You cannot put thousands of people coming into Limerick from Clare and Tipperary on bicycles. This is not Beijing," he quipped.

Community group, Better Ennis said the omission was “a good thing”. The group referenced the Transport Modelling Assessment Report for LSMATS which predicted the LNDR would add to traffic, “good thing we’re dodging that bullet”. The group also described the planned South Clare Economic Development Zone as a “death knell”.

“It was very disappointing to see Better Ennis celebrating the news,” Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) commented at Tuesday’s meeting of the Ennis Municipal District.

Ennis’ future development is dependent on the LNDR, he argued. He said Minister Ryan’s move was “anti-democratic” and undermined democratic decisions made in previous County Development Plans. Flynn warned of a “huge impact” to Ennis with the opportunity of 5000 to 6000 jobs being lost.

Director of Physical Development with the Council, Carmel Kirby noted that the National Transport Authority were supportive of the LNDR but the Minister “through the climate agenda is opposed to the road being built”. She said the matter is now out for public consultation and that the LNDR has a “hugely important role” to ease traffic congestion, improve accessibility at the University of Limerick, aid the proposed development of the SDZ and for future connections between Shannon Airport, Shannon Town Centre wand future economic and university zones. “It is important to note it is a draft”.

Town Centre first policy 'a potential game-changer'

ORMATION of Town Teams across Clare can allow the county to “steal a march” following the recent launch of the ‘Town Centre First’ policy by the Department of Housing.

Launched in February by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the 88 page policy document ‘Town Centre First A Policy Approach for Irish Towns’ “aims to create town centres that function as viable, vibrant and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit, while also functioning as the service, social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community”.

Citing the policy in a joint proposal before the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) and Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) noted the central role played by Town Teams in the document and their capacity “to strength existing organisations and networks”. They appealed to the MD to support the development of more Town Teams in West and North Clare “according to the

settlement hierarchy of the county development plan”.

Director of Rural Development with Clare County Council, Leonard Cleary outlined that they are awaiting further detail “in order for a decision to be made on the application process and which Council Department is best suited to lead on the scheme”.

He said it will need to align closely with the County Development Plan and when further information is available, the proposal will be considered.

He added, “The Town Centre First Policy indicates that in the coming months a dedicated staff resource will be funded to assist with this staff capacity issue. Together with existing staff, the Town Teams proposal can be scoped out and planned as it is a significant undertaking. Clare County Council is committed to supporting the existing three Town Teams (Kilrush, Ennistymon and Scariff ) and looks forward to capacity building with volunteers beyond these initial three groups”.

Places have been shaped by the communities built at the heart of parishes, the Kilkee representative stated. “These are places that are the fulcrum of economic activity.

We need town centres that reflect current future needs. We have an opportunity to

steal a march on the process by formally pulling together these. We should be able to hand them a set of towns and villages that have some structure and projects lined up for applications”.

Investing in towns and villages is “a smart business move,” Cllr Garrihy maintained.

The mentioning of Town Teams in the document was the motivation for the motion, he revealed.

Det Jenks stated that the 22 thefts from Mr Stevenson were carried out through a VISA debit card that he had given to Ms Hennessy to get his messages. Det Jenks said that the money was spent by Ms Hennessy on insurance payments, online motor tax, utility bills and payments to a high interest loan company along with a contribution to a daughter’s school.

The thefts ranged in value from €20 to €450. The detective said that Mr Stevenson was a single man and moved to Killaloe in east Clare from the UK around 30 years ago. He said that Mr Stevenson had no family in Ireland but has a brother and niece in the UK. Mr Stevenson moved into the nursing home in December 2018 after Det Jenks stated that the man wasn't able to look after himself anymore and wanted to spend his last few years in comfort in a nursing home.

Det Jenks said that when Gardai went to the home of Ms Hennessy on February 19th last year, she immediately accepted responsibility for the thefts. Det Jenks said that Ms Hennessy - employer as a care worker at the care home from April 2020 to November 2020 - said that she was under pressure for money. Det Jenks said that Ms Hennessy’s late partner took his own life in 2016 and his body was found by a then 17 year old daughter in a garden shed. Det Jenks said that this tragedy greatly impacted Ms Hennessy.

'No flashiness' in €3k stolen from nursing home resident ALL the money that a care home worker stole from an 83-year old care home resident went on household bills and debts.

That is according to solicitor, Darragh Hassett who told Killaloe District Court that there was “no element of flashiness” in the spend by Lorraine Hennessy of the €3,011 that she stole from Terrance Stevenson.

Mr Hassett said that Ms Hennessy has now repaid all the €3,011 that was stolen from Mr Stevenson. In the case, Ms Hennessy (40) of Glor na Srutha, Clonlara has pleaded guilty to 22 theft charges concerning €3,011 between August 20th and October 5th 2020 from Terrance Stevenson.

In court, Judge Mary Larkin said that there had “been a breach of trust” by Ms Hennessy of Mr Stevenson. Judge Larkin told the court on Tuesday: "I am definitely going to convict because of the breach of trust of Mr Stevenson.”

Sgt Louis Moloney told the court: “It is a particularly bad offence and there are many of them and it was taken badly locally”.

Judge Larkin said that she required a Probation Report prior to sentencing and adjourned sentencing to July and remarked that she requires the Probation Report ‘urgently'.

In evidence previously, Det Garda John Jenks stated that Mr Stevenson knew that he was dying when he was making his statement to Gardai concerning the thefts and

ONSTRUCTION work has resumed on the new County Library at the Causeway Link adjacent to glór.

Coolsivna Construction’s appointment as contractor for the project ends an 18 month delay which arose the initial successful tender Keating Construction entered liquidation.

Late 2021 was the original target for completion of the construction of the library building but Chief Executive of Clare County Council, Pat Dowling has confirmed it now has a planned opening of the latter part of 2023 and that it has a tendered sum of €8.7m.

Ennis Community College’s 4,200 square metre three-storey extension is among the most recent projects completed by Coolsivna. As a medium-sized company, Coolsivna has completed projects in residential and healthcare settings and has also won the contract for the construction of the new Craughwell National School in County Galway.

The County Library project consists of a 2,321-square-metre building on the glór site comprising two public floors of library space incorporating the local studies centre, a separate art gallery and the County Library HQ on the third floor.

The state-of-the-art new build will provide a key resource for research, study, recreation and art in a centralised location adjacent to the well-established glór theatre.

It will also operate as a ‘My Open Library’ service, allowing access to the building

during non-traditional opening hours. In addition, it will house the second fully accessible toilet in Ennis after a similar facility was recently opened in Tim Smythe Park.

Speaking at the contract signing, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) stated, “This project represents an important investment in an accessible and modern library service for the people of Clare and visitors to the county.”

Architects for the project, Keith Williams Architects, also expressed their support for the re-commencement of the project while

Anne Haugh, Director of Social Development, Clare County Council, acknowledged the contribution of all involved in getting the project successfully re-tendered and back on track.

Clare County Librarian, Helen Walsh, added, “the long-awaited new library will bring a wonderful collaboration together on the site, unifying the literary arts with the visual and performing arts”.

Cllr Pat Daly (FF) said the return of construction workers on site represented “exciting times” for the county.

Cousins convicted for possession of illegally caught salmon TWO men have been convicted for being in the possession of illegally caught Salmon on the River Fergus in Ennis, Co. Clare and were ordered to pay fines following prosecutions taken by Inland Fisheries Ireland, writes Páraic McMahon.

Cousins Mr. Gerard Considine and Mr. Niall Considine, both with an address of Clarecastle, Co. Clare, received a fine of €200 and costs of €471 each following their conviction at Ennis District Court on Friday, the 22nd of April 2022 by Judge Bernadette Owens.

Officers gave evidence in relation to the offence which occurred on the 1st of July 2021.

They outlined the facts of the case to the court of how Mr. Gerard Considine and Mr. Niall Considine had been apprehended following a night time surveillance operation in the area after suspicious activity had been detected. The men were found to be in possession of eight illegally caught salmon from the River Fergus in Ennis.

ies Ireland has no tolerance for illegal fishing. Atlantic salmon stocks are in decline and need to be protected. Illegal fishing puts the already diminished stocks in further jeopardy. The river Fergus and the entire river Shannon catchment is closed for the harvesting of Salmon due to the poor level of salmon stocks in the river”.

150 Clare groups join Spring Clean OVER 150 Clare groups joined the National Spring Clean 2022 campaign with its highest results yet achieved.

The National Spring Clean is Ireland’s official anti-litter campaign and over the past 23 years, the initiative has been highlighted the collective responsibility we share in tackling and preventing our national litter problem.

This year, the campaign returned to its usual month-long clean up after 2 years of restricted clean-ups due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over 150 groups from Clare registered to carry out clean-ups while more than 6,100 Clare volunteers have participated in organised clean-ups throughout the county.

Nationwide, volunteers collected an estimated 2,800 tonnes of litter.

Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, said of the initiative: “The statistics for what the National Spring Clean achieves every year are staggering and are a real testament to the energy, drive and community commitment of volunteers up and down the country.

“I would also like to acknowledge the key role played by An Taisce in overseeing the campaign. My Department will continue to provide support to the campaign and I look forward to the many events that will be held countrywide.”

AFETY MEASURES need to be analysed closer outside a Newmarket-on-Fergus primary school according to local representatives.

An extension of the existing barrier outside Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire in Newmarket-on-Fergus towards the post box on the Eurospar side of the Ennis Rd was sought by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) at a recent meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. His motion was seconded by Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF).

OLLARDS to prevent illegal parking in Newmarket-on-Fergus have been removed “on a consistent basis,” a local representative has lamented.

An appeal for the Shannon Municipal District to “put measures in place at the junction to Lough Gash due to motorists parking at this junction which is creating a hazard for road users turning towards the village” was issued by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF).

Design alterations have been completed by the Shannon MD office “to improve sightlines for motorists emerging from this junction and turning into the town. This will involve improved line marking and bollards along the village side,” senior executive engineer Tom Mellett confirmed.

With the junction in the immediate vicinity of the village’s only grocery store, Eurospar, the grounds of Newmarket Celtic FC and Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire which has the largest amount of pupils of the par-

ish’s four primary schools, the instances for visibility have become particularly problematic at peak times such as the beginning and end of the school day, underage training times and Sunday mornings when key games in the Clare District Soccer League (CDSL) take place.

“Some people go to the trouble of taking away bollards on consistent basis,” Cllr McMahon lamented of the present arrangement. “It is highly dangerous coming right from the village, it is a big wide road and the traffic begins to speed up”. He felt “a minority of motorists” were the ones guilty of speeding, “I say young people and we always used to go fast when we were young”.

Spectators and shoppers are parking as close as they can to either McDonagh Memorial Park or Eurospar, McMahon added.

“It is a dangerous traffic hazard,” he concluded.

While seconding the motion, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) noted that the “regular occurrence” of visibility issues at the site.

“There is nothing to say there is no parking and people will pull up and those coming from the junction cannot see what is coming from behind,” he stated.

Facelift needed for Quin Rd Business Park PÁRAIC MCMAHON

LECTED representatives have called for Quin Road Business Park to be given a facelift.

Noting that the Business Park on the outskirts of Ennis was “a very busy and important economic centre in which businesses provide essential retail services to Clare customers and significant employment,” Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) appealed for Shannon Group, Clare County Council and the Ennis Municipal District to urgently look at upgrading it in terms of customer, worker and business owner experience.

Specifically he suggested the creation of a biodiversity or recreational area on vacant sites at the left hand side of the entrance, improved pedestrian access, improved cycling access, bus usage for Local Link, consistent and improved signage, improved litter

and environmental control, improved public lighting and footpaths plus improved traffic control and speed limits.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the Ennis MD, Cllr Flynn voiced his frustration with the current conditions including the lack of linkage between footpaths and the poorly functioning street lights which leave workers travelling to their place of employment in the dark. He was also annoyed that Shannon Group did not apply a rates waiver during the pandemic when the County Council did.

He outlined that businesses had hoped a property management agency would take over the Business Park prior to the economic collapse. “We need to try create a sustainable future, it looks very broken and piecemeal, it needs a significant investment,” Flynn said. He calculated that it was creating up to €100,000 for Shannon Group per annum and a higher amount for the Council.

“Quin Rd Business Park is vital for the lifeblood of Ennis,” Cllr Pat Daly (FF) commented, he agreed that im-

proved footpaths and public transport options would benefit the area. Support was voiced by Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) as he seconded the proposal. Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) stated, “the business park does need a facelift”.

Putting a biodiversity aspect into the Business Park would be “a great idea,” Cllr Mary Howard (FG) believed. Employees have no place to sit outside when having their lunch in the Business Park, she flagged, “we’ve learned to change our habits over the last two years, workers would like to have some bit of comfort when sitting out having their lunch”. The road surface was another issue, she raised.

Senior executive officer, Leonore O’Neill told councillors the Business Park was not in the ownership of Clare County Council but said she would endeavour to work with Shannon Commercial Properties. Eamon O’Dea, senior executive engineer explained that different blocks are under the ownership of Shannon Group not the Council which can limit their ability to do road improvements.

Parents forced to play ‘Russian roulette’ due to road conditions

by PÁRAIC McMAHON PARENTS are forced to play “Russian roulette” on the school run due to the dangers posed by a busy Ennis junction.

Residents on the Shanaway Rd in Ennis are growing increasingly frustrated with their ongoing wait for some form of alterations to improve road safety as they approach the junction leading to the Lahinch Rd. Clare County Council’s road design office have recently completed a topographical survey of the N85 from Claureen roundabout to the start of the speed limit zone. Executive engineer, Michael O’Grady stated, “conceptual design options for Active Travel Measures are being developed for this area, the Shanaway Rd junction is being incorporated into these designs”.

An update had been sought by Cllr Mark Nestor (FF) on the back of queries from local residents. He commended the cohort of Ennis councillors for continuing to keep the item high on the Council’s agenda. “A survey and conceptual design are all well and good but what I want to hear and what residents want to hear is a timeframe to get approval from TII and start work on the ground”.

Councillors are like “scratched records when you’re getting nowhere with issues,” Cllr Mary Howard (FG) felt. She was fearful it was going to take a death for TII to pay attention. She recalled that there were three accidents in quick succession last year, “in a matter of inches a person could have

been seriously injured”. The former Mayor of Clare said with a couple of thousands residents living in the vicinity, using the golf club, Hotel Woodstock and Banner GAA club that traffic levels are consistently high.

“It is Russian roulette for some parents going to Inch,” Cllr Howard flagged. She detailed that in order to avoid the junction to the Lahinch Rd, parents are travelling on a road “which is nothing more than a lane for a horse and a cart”. She maintained it was time to get tough with TII, “it is a nightmare in the morning and it is frightening to watch”.

Safety measures are needed, Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) said while sympathising with residents on the “dreadful impact” to their quality of life. “It is a public safety issue, road design must be pulling their hair out with the intransigence of TII”. Residents are getting “very impatient,” Cllr Pat Daly (FF) acknowledged, “it is the same junction for the last 40 years and now thousands are living there, there is no reason what happened at Corrovorrin shouldn’t happen here”. A briefing from John Gannon of the roads design office was sought by Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF).

Director of Physical Development, Carmel Kirby confirmed that the road design office are trying to make progress with the Shanaway Rd junction as an Active Travel project. Adjustments have been made to try get TII’s “responsibility back into the equation,” executive engineer Eamon O’Dea explained, adding that the design office were on their third version of a potential solution.

Man (89) drives into Municipal District office OFFICES of the Shannon Municipal District were damaged on Wednesday evening, writes Páraic McMahon.

A male pensioner (89) accidentally drove into the offices of the Shannon MD after paying a bill. He misfortunately pressed the accelerator instead of the brake on his Nissan car after making the transaction in Shannon town.

No persons were injured but the driver of the car was said to be very shook after the accident. Clare County Council have confirmed that the Shannon MD offices are now temporarily closed to the pub-

lic “until further notice”. Services can still be accessed by phone on 061-362319; email to shannonmunicipaldistrict@ clarecoco.ie.

Activity at the MD offices has only increased in recent weeks with access loosening following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Service to BarcelonaGirona takes flight

HANNON Airport’s new route to Barcelona-Girona has taken to the skies for the first time, five weeks after it was initially due to.

News of the five week commencement delay “for operational reasons” was first reported by The Clare Echo in March and came just three weeks after the service was announced.

Now that it has up and running, the Ryanair service will operate twice weekly, each Tuesday and Saturday until the end of October 2022.

Passengers boarded the 8:40am service for the first time on Tuesday morning in what is the second Ryanair flight to the Catalonia region from Shannon Airport.

Clarecastle’s Jim Lynch was among the passengers for the inaugural flight, he was hopeful the public would make the most of the service. “I am lucky enough to have a house just over

the border in France. I will arrive now in Girona, and I will be able to pick up my car and will hopefully be in my house in about 45 minutes. That basically means leaving Shannon Airport at 8.40am and being in my house in the South of France at about 12.30pm Irish time, which is just incredible. I hope people use this flight. Just to go to Barcelona for the weekend, you can get on the plane, and get into Barcelona and have a great time. Girona is a beautiful city also. People normally head to Barcelona, but you can go to Girona itself for two or three days – it is a fabulous city as well. So, I am delighted with the flight and long may it last”.

Chloe Mulligan travelled to Shannon Airport from Co. Roscommon was also departing on the inaugural service with Ryanair. Chloe said, “We are going to Girona, and we are super-duper excited. This morning we went through Shannon Air-

port easy breezy and are really looking forward to the rest of the trip”.

West Clare duo, Lucy and Aidan O’Malley remarked “how handy” it was to travel from Shannon to Barcelona-Girona for their holiday break in Costa Brava. Lucy said, “We have loads of time to spare because we got through security and everything. It took less than ten minutes, so it is excellent.”

Aidan added, “It’s a pleasure going through [Shannon Airport] here, the convenience of it and the flight here is now close to where we are going on holidays, so overall, [we are] looking forward to it.”

Barcelona–Girona offers multiple destination options for holidaymakers from Shannon due to its central location between Barcelona and Costa Brava.

Girona is just a 38-minute train journey from Barcelona, served by regular rail services. The new service will be welcome news to many football fans as this offers them an additional access to FC Barcelona.

Planning regulator to meet with Council over breaches

FTER highlighting a number of breaches in the County Development Plan, the Office of the Planning Regulator is to address a meeting of Clare County Council.

Adjustments to the development plan have been recommended by the Office of the Planning Regulator who said Clare County Council have breached a number of national and regional guidelines.

The Clare Echo has previously reported that the OPR said it was “inappropriate” for the Council to include the Strategic Development Zone which would become Europe’s first university town in the plans.

A total of 13 recommendations and eight observations have been made by the State’s planning watchdog to the draft which warned that “significant adjustments” will have to be made.

Concerns have been flagged regarding the amount of residential land zoned in certain towns, in the submission by the OPR. The population target of 11,637 set by the Council is higher than allocations set previously in the National Planning Framework Implementation Roadmap and the Southern Regional Assembly Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES), the OPR stated.

Following a proposal by Cllr PJ Kelly (FF), Niall Cussen, the planning regulator is to address an upcoming meeting of the County Council. Director of Economic Development, Liam Conneally stated in response to his motion, “In order to get the most from the meeting it would be beneficial if the members could identify the specific planning policy areas they wish Mr. Cussen to address”.

According to Cllr Kelly there is now “complicity attached” for all planning matters. The Lissycasey representative said he had no issue submitting questions in advance of

meeting “but I don’t want to be tied to time, the follow-up questions may be the most important”. Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) seconded the proposal, “the last thing we want to do is reduce the discussion”.

Shannon based, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) called Cllr Kelly “our expert in planning” and questioned, “at times you would wonder if we had a planning regulator with some of the decisions made”.

Chief Executive of the Council, Pat Dowling noted that Cussen formerly worked for the local authority. “It is not an opportunity to go totally on the attack, it is a chance to have a constructive debate, it is a new position so we can’t blame him for everything wrong in the world”.

“We will have a constructive discussion, we will clear the air. We have preference and prejudice, both of them are punctuated by politics leading to eternal confusion,” Kelly responded.

Director of Rural Development, Leonard Cleary acknowledged the frustration of councillors. He queried if Cllr Talty was still keen for the matter to be brought before Irish Water’s attention to which the Lahinch man replied, “It can’t do any harm to send it to Irish Water but that’s not a solution because they won’t do anything”.

Action needs to begin so that Doolin and Lisdoonvarna will be the ones to benefit after Broadford, Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) commented. “There is no point watching if it just happens in Broadford, we need to be saying what do we put in place so we’re in that position for the next round of funding”.

Referencing the Circular Economy Bill which addresses “substantial GDPR issues in relation to CCTV,” Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) requested the Minister of Justice, Helen McEntee (FG) through An Garda Síochána to “take in charge, control, operation and maintenance of the CCTV infrastructure within Kilrush Town to be utilised for crime prevention and detection, safeguarding and protecting the public”.

Acting senior executive officer in the West Clare MD, John O’Malley confirmed that they are in engagement with Gardaí regarding CCTV in Kilrush. “This

is progressing in line with the developing new national legislation,” he stated.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the West Clare MD, Cllr Lynch recalled a recent robbery in Kilrush where the cameras were in the ideal position “to pinpoint within hours who the robber was”. He said, “now is the time for Gardaí to take ownership of the cameras”.

Use of CCTV “certainly belongs in the hands of An Garda Síochána,” Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) agreed. “While community groups can install CCTV there is the potential for unintended consequences,” he cautioned.

Addressing the meeting, O’Malley said their most meeting with Gardaí on the matter was over a month ago. “We have a very good understanding that the Gardaí are going to take that element of it”.

Vladimir brings the Four Seasons to glór

by STUART HOLLY NE of the world’s most famous and popular pieces Vivaldi’s Four Seasons gets an amazing re-shaping by renowned Slovakian Violinist Vladimir Jablokov next Friday (May 13) in glór.

Performed as part of his Four Seasons Explained tour, with this unique arrangement, there will be a visual translation of the 300-year-old sonnets that inspired the pieces.

Vladimir’s father performed Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons regularly and some of his performances and recordings go back to 1985 - the year Vladimir was born. “I remember one concert in Bratislava when I was about 10 years old. Dad was not only playing the full Four Seasons with his chamber orchestra, but he was also reading the sonnets published in the original Vivaldi’s score 300 years ago.’

In August 2021, Vladimir’s Dad sadly passed away. Vladimir now wants to continue his father’s legacy and explain the sonnets to a wider audience. His hand-picked violin, cello and piano ensemble will begin with a unique arrangement of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. The latter half of the concert will also feature some of the most popular pieces in Vladimir’s repertoire, including Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5, Blue Danube, Strauss’ Radetzky March, Theme from Schindler’s List, If I Were a Rich Man and more audience favourites.

STARS of the RTÉ drama Smother visited the Clare 250 Cancer Centre as part of filming for the show’s third series.

Crew and cast of the popular drama visited the centre on the Clare Rd in Ennis at the end of April as they continue their work in Co Clare on the third series.

Location manager, Sean Burke had contacted management of the centre expressing an interest in shooting some scenes there.

“We were both excited and intrigued,” operational manager of the centre, Claire Nugent recalled of the initial contact.

“We had no idea what to expect when a crew of over 30 arrived and it was certainly an education to watch the film-

making process,” she said.

Two and a half days were spent by cast and crew dressing and filming where the only interruption was the bird song.

“It is a privilege to be a part of such a professional production that will be seen throughout Ireland, the UK and beyond and they were a delight to host,” Claire added.

Leading ladies Niamh Walsh and Gemma-Leah Devereux were among the actresses involved in the scenes at the location.

Clare 250 Cancer Centre will be holding its annual fundraising weekend on the 21st and 22nd of May with a Coffee Day on the 21st in the centre and their annual cycle on the 22nd.

Lough Graney selected for €20m Waters of LIFE scheme

IVER catchments surrounding Lough Graney in North East Clare have been selected for inclusion in the EU-funded Waters of LIFE project to protect Ireland’s most pristine river catchments.

The catchment area is one of six nationally to be included in this project, launched by Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan TD (GP). The Shournagh near Tower and Blarney in Cork, the Awbeg near Kanturk in Cork, the Island River in the Galway/Roscommon area near Ballymoe, the Avonmore in Co Wicklow and The Sheen in Kerry are the others included.

Forestry and single house treatment systems have been identified as the “significant pressures” facing rivers in the Lough Graney catchment area. The project will include a demonstration project to develop, test, and validate integrated catchment management measures to halt and reverse the declining number of high status water bodies in Ireland.

Managed by the Department of Housing,

Local Government and Heritage, the strategic project involves 16 partners including government departments, State agencies, Local Authorities, and local development companies, with an overall budget of €20 million, €9.5m of which has been committed by the European Union. The aim is to reverse the long-term trend of decline in Ireland’s “high status” waters.

High status rivers are those considered to be in pristine condition and rich in biodiversity and Ireland is one of a small number of EU member states that still has a number of high status water bodies. However, the number of remaining high-status sites has declined from 31.5% (1987-1990) to 19.9% (2017-2020), representing an almost 37% decline in number according to EPA data.

Since its creation in 1992, the LIFE programme has co-financed some 5000 projects across the EU, with a total contribution of approximately €6.5 billion for the protection of the environment and climate action.

Key objectives of the Waters of LIFE strategic project up to 2028 will be to increase understanding of the causes of status change in these types of rivers, which can be sensitive to even minor land management changes within a catchment. Enhancing public awareness of the ecology, ecosystems and natural capital of high-status waters and

their catchments and development of locally tailored solutions in consultation with local landowners and communities including development of a results based agricultural payments scheme, which will be implemented in three of the six catchments are other aspirations plus the issuing of recommendations that will inform the development of future agri-environment and forestry policies and provide for the long-term sustainable management of high-status catchments.

Speaking at the project launch, Noonan

stated, “The ongoing loss of high status waters is among the most concerning, protracted and persistent water quality trends in Ireland. The six high status rivers selected for this scheme – and the communities, industries and local economy surrounding them – will benefit greatly from the implementation of locally-tailored solutions to be delivered through this scheme. No doubt many learnings will be found and can be applied to our future efforts to preserve and improve our high status waters”.

Thought for the week

A

S I write this thought for the week, I am just after returning from a beautiful May walk around where I live, where finally the season of summer is upon us and it has shown itself in full bloom and it gave me a sweet taste of the hopefully warm summer days before us.

Month of Our Lady

The month of May which is also the month of Our Lady marks the start of the summer and a time to enjoy and experience life.

It is often said that May is the most beautiful month of the year.

The flowers are in full bloom, the weather is mild and the first fruits of the soil are beginning to reward our hard labour.

It is fitting that we should dedicate to Mary, the most beautiful month of the year, for she is the most beautiful of God’s creatures. We should offer this month to Mary, by increasing our love for her. We should love her with a filial love, for she loves us with the heart of a mother.

If we contemplate her beauty and goodness, we shall be inflamed with love for her.

It will be a tender love, such as we have for our earthly mother and, at the same time, a respectful and worshipful love, such as we ought to have for the Mother of God. Our offering of the month of May to Mary, should result in a twofold resolution: the resolution to make good our failings and to advance in holiness.

This is the only way in which we can prove the sincerity of our affection, by deeds rather than by words. It is certain that we have many faults of character. Let us examine ourselves in front of Our Lady’s Altar, by comparing our weakness with her magnificence of soul.

When we have discovered our failings, let us be courageous in eradicating them.

We can offer this sacrifice to Mary, with love and generosity, no matter

how hard it may be. We can spend every day of this month, digging out those weeds in the garden of our soul, which, our passions and the influence of evil in our world have helped to flourish. Let us plant and bring to perfection in their place, the flowers of caring and loving virtues. We all need to be positive and embrace abundance, love, care and joy into our lives, treasuring each moment as it comes.

We get so wrapped up at times, well I know I do, with thinking about the past, a lot of the time trying to control the future and forgetting to enjoy and be at peace in the present moment of now. In this world there is strife. There is hardship. There is suffering. There is inequality.

There is injustice. There is also abundant beauty amidst it all.

Thought for the week

As your thought for the week, I pray that as the signs of summer begin to show themselves all around us, you will remember that each new day is like a cleared field eradicated of weeds ready for planting.

Your thoughts, attitudes, and actions are the seeds you plant. This summer choose only the seeds that will produce a bountiful harvest of love, joy, health, kindness, care, prosperity, and peace. And may you give thanksgiving not only for the summertime around you, but also for the summertime within you. This summer season try to dislodge hate and replace it with love. Dislodge pride and replace it with humility.

Dislodge anger and replace it with self control.

Dislodge unbelief and replace it with faith. Dislodge revenge, and replace it with forgiveness. Dislodge complaining and replace it with praise. Dislodge evil and unkind thoughts and replace them with pure and kind thoughts.

Dislodge gossip and replace it with encouragement. Dislodge laziness and replace it with caring.

I wish each of you as you read this thought, in this moment and on this day, much peace and joy and pray that we will recover from the worries and destruction of the coronavirus and find a cure for it.

Feel this summer, own it, squeeze the juice out of it.

You have arrived at your destination; this is the present summer of your life.

Let us make this month of May and season of Summer be a month and season of blessings: blessings of goodness, blessings of joy, peace and kindness, friendship and love, creativity, strength, serenity, equality, justice, peace, love, fulfilling work and dignity, satisfaction, success, and sustenance, physical health and radiance.

May truth and justice guide our acts, and compassion temper our lives that we may blossom as we age and become our sweetest selves.

May it be so during this month of May and always.

This work of clearing and eradicating our faults and replacing them by their opposite virtues, is a difficult task which we cannot carry out on our own. Prayer is necessary if we are to obtain the grace which we need. During Mary’s month of May, we should beseech our heavenly Mother, with greater earnestness, to obtain for us, from her divine Son, the grace which we need to correct the evil in our nature and to perfect it in goodness.

Mary wants us to pray to her because she wishes to obtain for us, the graces which we require. She loves us very much and is ready to help us to become, like her, living imitations of Jesus, insofar as the weakness of our nature will permit.

Among our other prayers, let us remember to give pride of place to the Holy Rosary, whether we recite it in church or with our family.

Let us include, at least a quarter of an hour meditation; a daily visit, however short, to the Blessed Sacrament and to Our Lady’s Altar; an examination of conscience in the evening and many prayers during the day, which will express our love for Mary and for her divine Son. Enjoy a beautiful May and summer!!!

ASPARAGUS & HAKE BAKE Kearney Cooks

I

HAD a massive hankering for a bit of fish last Friday night, and I was after doing a heavy week’s work, so I honestly wasn’t in the humour for doing a load of cooking. So I decided to just fling all my ingredients into the oven and see what happened. Well I can tell you it worked a treat and as a result of my laziness I am now going to share my lazy oven baked fish dish here with you. I used hake in this recipe but it works well with cod, haddock, pollock etc.

As always I will post the instructional video on my Instagram @kearneycooks at the weekend, and that is where you will also find all my other recipes as well. Anyways, time to get cooking some fish!

YOU WILL NEED • 2 fillets of white fish (I used hake) • 1 lemon • 100g butter • 3 cloves of garlic • Salt and pepper • 12 asparagus spears • 4 slices of parma ham Step One Blanche your asparagus in boiling water for four minutes and cool the asparagus down immediately in cold water. Set aside for later. Slowly melt your butter with the garlic and the juice of half the lemon in a pot. Set aside for later.

Step Two Place your fish in an oven dish. Cut the other half of the lemon into slices and place on top of the fish. Wrap three sticks of the asparagus in each slice of parma

ham and place into the oven dish with the fish. Season everything with salt and pepper.

Pour over the melted butter mix and bung the whole lot into the oven for approximately 15 minutes at 180 degrees.

Cooking times will vary depending on the thickness of the fish.

Step Three Serve up your fish and asparagus with some buttery baby boiled potatoes and spoon some of the butter from the oven dish over everything. I like to pair this dish with a massive glass of white wine. Like a pint of it!

is concerned.

Though not clearly visible, three-time All Star Kelly was beaming beneath the surface as Clare kept their aspirations of a Munster Final appearance and qualification for the All-Ireland series well and truly alive by beating Cork on Sunday.

Attitude was hailed by the team captain as a main factor behind their strong start in Munster. “We pride ourselves on workrate and that’s what has been drilled into us. The hurling looks after itself. We were under pressure there in the second half but our defence was superb when we were under pressure. If you have workrate and honesty

around the field in abundance, we are confident that our hurling is good enough to match anyone. It was a 20 man job today and we are delighted to have come out with the result.

Overall, we are extremely happy especially after going down to fourteen for a long period in the second half ”.

Kelly heaped praise on his teammates. “The backs were outstanding again today. We had a mighty contribution last week and it was the same again today, even from the lads coming off the bench, Shanagher and Domhnall McMahon gave us something different up front in terms of ball winning ability and showing the ball down coming to our defence”.

Staying in front throughout the tie was vital, the Ballyea man stated. “You are always trying to find an extra per cent to replace a player. We got a few great scores from

Diarmuid Ryan and Fitzy. We always kept a five or six point lead heading down the home straight which was important”.

“Every day you go out you have to try and better your performance from the day before.

Sometimes it does happen for certain teams or certain individuals but it’s the eveness, the workrate and the honesty you are trying to replicate from last week and the hurling follows, if you can turnover ball and get your tackle count high and we did that today and it was an improvement. We are playing Limerick next and we will have to come up another notch or two if we are to beat them.

We all know that they are the standard bearers in the country for a reason”.

He added, “We backed up last week’s result this week. It’s all about getting results in this round robin. You can play all the lovely hurling you want

and not get out of the group.

You need to be in that three, whatever number you are and assess it then at the end. We have a good start made but we are only half way there”.

Clare will not get carried away with their two wins, he insisted. “We knew we had to win this game. We have our eyes on the Munster championship like every team in Munster. We are not going to get carried away. It was a great result. We are fortunate enough that we have a week to regroup. It’s in our own hands now where we want to go . Its all about trying to replicate those performances”.

“Playing games is mighty, We have played the old system and the new system. We would prefer to be playing more games than training. We won’t complain playing week on week”, he concluded.

BRIAN LOHAN, CLARE SENIOR HURLING MANAGER: “They are savage guys, really class guys but they are driving it in training and the gym, they’re great guys. It’s great for the county, for the bunch of players and the supporters.

“There was a good bit of endeavour and desire from the players all week, they were mad to get down here and get working.

“They are all working so hard, they do massive work on the field but also in the gym and on their own, they’re a special bunch.

“It is something to really look forward, two games at home, Limerick coming next for us which is great. We’ll have a break for one weekend and go again”.

KIERAN KINGSTON, CORK MANAGER: “We were in control of our own destiny to a degree and after today we lost that control. So it goes without saying we’re massively disappointed. We had a bad start. We were really nervous in the first 20 minutes and we made some simple, elementary mistakes. That was disappointing because [if] you give a team the calibre of Clare that lead and try [fight back] you’re always struggling. We have to hold our hands up, on the day we were beaten by the better team, no question about that.

“For us the positives are we kept at it, kept fighting hard. When you break it down, limiting them to one shot on goal for the whole game...but we conceded a lot of points from further out the field and they compensated for that.”

“Pressure is a privilege in this environment.

If you couldn’t deal with criticism or couldn’t take pressure, you shouldn’t be in this game.

I’ve a backroom team here over 20 people and we’ve 35 on the panel, they’re extremely hard working people. We all do this on a voluntary basis and we give our heart and soul to it, as do the players and that’s the way it should be. We’re proud to do it and we’re proud to be involved with Cork hurling. I know those players, they’re gutted in there, they’re really hurting, as we are. But we’re proud to be involved with Cork. Any pressure, any outside noise ain’t going to change how we feel about that.”

“Cork’s goal just before half-time was a sucker-punch and it probably was a square ball. I’d need to see it again but up to that we were flying and [Cork] didn’t know how to live with our intensity. We were putting them under serious pressure all over the field and I thought we were going to go into the break a few points up but you know what, it probably made the message easier that it was a draw at half-time to keep going and dig deeper.

And they did, they gave it to us in spades.”

ELF-PROFESSED as the “elder statesman” of the Clare side, centre back, John Conlon was grinning in Semple Stadium after they completed the task of backing up their impressive start to the Munster SHC. Speaking after the team’s impressive win over Cork he said, “We agreed this week that we needed to back up last week’s performance today and we certainly did that”.

“We can play a lot of different games, different styles. We are trying to combine everything and come with different attacks.

We have two weeks now to prepare for Limerick which is going to be a huge task”.

The former Clare captain went on to say “Brian (Lohan) is a super manager, he is the same type of manager as he was when he was playing, a very quite unassuming person but when championship day comes a new animal comes out. We love that and we really buy into it and no better man to be leading us”.

Asked about his switch from attack to defence the Clonlara clubman said, “I have settled in after the last two years. Today we put down a marker from the word go. We have come to Thurles a lot in the 14 years I have been playing and its rare that we have come out with a win against Cork”.

“Who doesn’t want to play in Thurles, the field of dreams, the Clare crowd are coming back. We heard them up on the hill there and I hadn’t heard that in a long time. Momentum is building, it is building within the group, great bonds are being built; As the elder statesman in the team, I am really enjoying the youth and the energy around the group”.

He went on to say “we were eleven up and the sending off came and we said we needed to build the ball after the sending off.

We did play so well and got three or four great scores. Lads were making runs off the shoulder, we changed the game we were playing. Our backs to the wall near the end and we would probably be disappointed with the last five or six minutes”.

Conlon added, “training has gone really well since the league. Shane and Peter came back, Things were buzzing over that five weeks, things were coming right. Today we wanted to build on last week and we did that. We focus on each game as it comes.

We have two home games to come and next up it’s Limerick. They will bring a massive crowd as they usually do. We are looking forward to it”.

BILLY LEE, LIMERICK SENIOR FOOTBALL MANAGER: "The extra-time finished and I picked out five lads and we went into a huddle and someone said 'let lads put up their hands [to take one]' and as it turns out the five I picked were the five who put up their hands. We put them in order and loaded it at the front to make sure we had our strongest takers first, to get a bit of momentum, and the lads did the rest," said Lee, who has seen great improvement in his team since their last meetings with their neighbours.

"The last two times we came up against Clare in '17 and '18 we

weren't able to compete with them. We lost by a point here, I know that, but they were kind of in control of that game and in '18 they blew us off the field. The lads have worked really hard over the last few years to come down and take on a seasoned team like Clare. We mustn't get away from the fact Clare were missing a couple of key players. It's great and it is going to give us further belief as we face into the rest of the year”.

COLM COLLINS, CLARE SENIOR FOOTBALL MANAGER: “I thought fellas on the pitch did themselves proud and did everything they could, on the night the chances we missed in ordinary time were costly, then fair play to Limerick, when it came to penalties they really were on a different

league.

“Not really (had Clare practiced penalties). Even if we had our penalty takers were off the pitch when it came to extra time, that was the killing thing, in a normal run of events the key penalty takers would have been Tubs [David Tubridy], Keelan [Sexton] and

Gavin [Cooney], they were all off the pitch. The Limerick penalty taking was top drawer”.

“We had all the opportunities to win the game in normal time and we didn’t, we can’t have any complaints.

by SEAMUS HAYES CONCESSION of an early goal knocked the sails out of Clare’s minor footballers following their exit from the Munster championship.

Clare manager, Dermot Coughlan was disappointed for the campaign which began so positively with a comprehensive win over Waterford to have come to a conclusion in Shannon on Thursday.

“We got a great start, we targeted that start but we gave away that goal early on and it seemed to knock the sails out of us..They done a full press on

our kickouts and we struggled with it,” the Kilmurry Ibrickane man told The Clare Echo.

He continued, “We struggled with primary possession and when they tagged on that second goal we were always playing catch up. They turned over a lot of ball, the put a lot of pressure on and that’s the sign of a good team and whats more they got the scores out of the turnovers”.

Coughlan looked to the positives of their three-game championship run.

“We got to use a lot of players. We used 25/26 players over the three games, that was one of the aims” he said that

the main aim was to get to the phase 1 final and push on from that.

“We introduced a lot of players to inter county at this level. The future is bright. We are disappointed after today, disappointed with a couple of the goals given away. We have to learn from this”.

Coughlan believes that “the majority of those lads will push on into squads at under 20 level and the hope is that they will follow lads like Brendy Rouine and Brian McNamara who are now in Colm Collins senior squad. That’s the ultimate gain for Clare football, these lads pushing on”, he concluded.

Tasty success for Own Spice

by MICHAEL MAHER COORACLARE’s Own Spice galloped to a tasty success in the Saturday night feature at Galway Greyhound Stadium.

The concluding A0 550 yards contest was the Saturday night feature at Galway Greyhound Stadium and as the runners began the long run towards the opening bend Standing Proud showed the best to lead up from Own Spice with Noelles Prosecco in third place along the inner as they turned down the back.

Racing along the back the Thomas O’Doherty of Cooraclare owned Own Spice went to the front and the John Browne of Ballyea trained runner quickly set sail for home. From the third bend Noelles Prosecco went in pursuit but Own Spice(Skywalker Puma-Coolavanny Spice was home by two and a half lengths in 29.87.

Race 3 was an A5 graded contest which developed into a match from the third bend as Derra Peske & Insidethehuddle left their rivals toiling but in the early stages the pair were towards the rears Darla The Queen led the way to Merciful Debbie. Racing towards the halfway mark though Insidethehuddle made rapid progress out wide to lead approaching the third bend but he was tracked all the time by the Stephen Murray of Sixmilebridge trained Derra Peske. Rounding the home bend the leader moved wide and this allowed the Rachel Murray of Sixmilebridge owned Derra Peske (Ballymac Eske-Playmistyforme) to slip through and win going away by a length and a half in 29.51.

In race 2 on Friday nights card, all six runners came away almost as one for this S6 graded contest with One Survivor first to break rank to lead on the run towards the opening bend .

As the leader hit the bend the striped jacketed Burnpark Ronaldo loomed up on the wide outside before sweeping to the front on the crown of the turn. In the straight, the Alanna and Mi-

chael Browne of Cree owned son of Watchman and Burnpark Grainne drew right away to defeat the dead-heaters Johnny Ger Gar and One Survivor by six lengths in 19.40.

This Novice 525 yards contest looked a decent contest in paper and so it proved with the Noel Hehir of Inagh owned Gougane Jet making all the running to see off the staying on Cloonturk Bruno by a decreasing length at the line in 28.97. The winner was away smartly from the one box and despite moving to the centre of the track on the run up led by three lengths from the long striding Cloonturk Bruno.

Racing down the back Gougane Jet increased his advantage to over five lengths but from halfway Cloonturk Bruno began to close but Gougane Jet(Droopys Jet-Paper Doll) was always getting to the line inn front .

Last Monday evening at Limerick Greyhound Stadium proved fruitful for three Clare kennels, Seamus McMahon from Cooraclare recorded a first career win with Lissatouk Boris, this strapping son of Dorortas Woo Hoo and Lissatouk Lady landed the spoils in a A7 contest in 29.57.

There was success for Jumping John owned

by Carrigaholt’s Joe Keane who notched his first career win in a time of 30.55 for an A 6 contest. The Duggan brothers from Quin, Seamus and Aiden have a real consistent performer in Two Pints, a son of Paddys Magic and Miles girl he recorded a career best when winning his third race in 29.09, he is under the capable hands of Myles Cummins and Breda Casey.

There was racing last Thursday night at Limerick Greyhound Stadium and Ryans Lemon proved to be the only Clare winner, a son of Droopys Cain and Lemon Abigail and owned by the Parteen based Shanakyle Syndicate spearheaded by Joe Collins, he notched career win number three in a personal best of 29.09.

“A draw can go either way, we’re just delighted, we’re still in the Munster championship, we’re going playing them again next weekend and hopefully a Munster final after that, we’re playing Tipperary the following weekend after that in the All-Ireland championship, this is good, we’re going in the right direction and we’re on an upward curve”.

“You can’t beat matches, give me a match over a training session any day of the week, you learn more from it, we’ve learned an awful lot from that game today, we’ll bring it into next weekend for the replay. The crowd here, when do girls get an opportunity like this to be playing in front of a crowd like this”.

“It took a while for us to get our first score of the second half and when we did you could really hear the crowd was in and it lifted you a small bit, maybe we didn’t help ourselves at times but it’s a learning curve and we’ll work on those during the week and hopefully hit the nail on the head”.

“Tipp are a good team, we were trying to focus on ourselves, Tipp are in semi-finals and they are not in them for the last four years for no reason, we went toe to toe with them, personally I think we outplayed them at times, it shows we are up with them, Tipp should have beaten Galway above in Ballinasloe in a league semi-final, I really do and I’ve said it since I’ve got involved with Clare camogie, these girls are coming so close, we just need that one win, we are close today, that win is coming close. The door is ajar we just need to drive it through”.

ENNIS GOLF CLUB: The Holmpatrick cup qualifier, in aid of the NCBI, was the competition at Ennis Golf Club last weekend where the winners were Philip Brigdale (20) and Patrick Garry (27) with 42 points. They will represent Ennis in the regional final in Adare Manor GC with a chance to win a trip to St. Andrews, Scotland.

In the Friday open singles the winner was Ann Pyne Gallery (29) with 41 points from Alphie Duggan (19) with 40 points with third spot filled by Ger Donohue (18) with 38 points. Ray Keogh (7) won the gross with 30 points.

Last week’s Tuesday fourball was won by Luke Coote and John Coleman with 36 points. They had one to spare over J. J. Counihan and Rodger McMahon. In third spot with 33 points were Michael Irwin and Damon Murphy followed by Paul Higgins and Noel Connellan with 31 points.

In the grand final of the Pat O’Brien three-person team event on Bank Holiday Monday, the winners were Brid Cunningham, John Cullinan and Diarmuid Meere with 98 points. In second place with 97 points were Carmel Verling, Frank Meaney and Michael Dempsey followed by Alan Fogarty, Dave Cahill and Conor Fogarty (All Gort) with 96 points.

The committee trophy, the second golfer of the year competition, will take place this weekend. A singles stableford event it is sponsored by Western Joinery, Ennis.

In the ladies’ Australian Spoons competition, the winners of the gross were Kitty Morris and Yvonne Keohane while the nett winners were Cora Kerins and Rita 0’Brien. In the 9 hole stableford competition, Eileen Holly (20) won with 18 points from Anne Kelly (14) with a similar score. Claire Ruane (10) was third, also with 18 points followed by Ann O’Loughlin (9) with 17 points.

The senior ladies competition was won by Mary McMahon, Mary Woulfe and Theresa Lillis with 47.9 points from Claire Ruane, Liz Kelly and Maureen Moloney with 51 1/6 points KILRUSH GOLF CLUB: The Bank Holiday weekend prize at Kilrush, sponsored by Clean Ireland was won by Michael Bolton (31) with 38 points from JIm Young Senior (9) with a similar score Noel Thornton (17) was third and he also returned 38 points as did fourth placed Bill Murphy (30). The category winners were Gearoid Williams (14) with 37 points, Andrew Egan (17) with 36 points and Sean Finnucane (23) with 35 points.

The ladies played for the Central Sports prize and here the winner was Muriel Kiely (30) with 37 points from Jean Lorigan (33) with 34 points. The 12 hole winner was Anne McMahon with 23 points.

GORT GOLF CLUB: Gort members played for the Bob Forde trophy at the weekend and this was an 18 hole singles stableford competition sponsored by T. J. O’Mahoney.
