ODAY marks exactly 25 years to the day since Clare won the 1995 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, finally ending the 81-year famine. To celebrate the event, The Clare Echo sits down with captain Anthony Daly, Ollie Baker, Frank Lohan and more members of the storied panel to recount their memories

of the sun-drenched summer which has gone down as Clare’s greatest sporting success in living memory. We meet the musician behind ‘The Banner Roar’ song along with some of the supporters who joined in the celebrations. Also included inside are never-before published photographs of players and supporters celebrating as Liam McCarthy - the “missing person in Clare” - crossed the River Shannon back into the Banner County.

WEST CLARE GREENWAY TO ‘FAR SURPASS’ WATERFORD’S LEADING officials behind the planned West Clare Greenway have declared that the project will “far surpass” its counterparts in Waterford and Mayo. Planned to be an 85km route, the West Clare Greenway will take in parts of the Wild Atlantic Way and coastal locations along the county as it travels from Ennis all the way to Kilkee. Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan (GP) is said to be impressed with the plans for the Clare project particularly with the emphasis on returning investment to local communities along the Greenway. “What we can offer in Clare will far surpass anything Waterford or Mayo can offer,” senior engineer with Clare County Council, Sean Lenihan stated this week. He expressed the belief that the Greenway will match the Cliffs of Moher in terms of the annual visitors it attracts to the county. €40m had previously been calculated as the cost for developing the West Clare Greenway but Council officials have admitted that the figure is likely to be closer to €80m. There is also the potential that the distance of the Greenway will be extended to 110km. Speaking this week, Cllr Shane Talty (FF) noted that it was likely to be a decade before “the bigger picture” of the Greenway is visible for the public. Communication with private landowners is ongoing with regard to progressing the West Clare Greenway.
