ISMAY has been expressed by hoteliers and restaurant owners across Clare following the introduction of a 3.8 percent increase in commercial rates.

Clare County Council’s budgetary meeting on Friday saw councillors vote 16-10 in favour of bringing in the rates increase with many elected representatives in rural areas citing a fear of cuts to their General Municipal

Allocation as a reason for backing the €138m Budget. Owner of Henry’s Bistro & Wine Bar, Dermot Fetton admitted he presumed the initial talk of a rates increase was a joke. He described the increase as unacceptable, “It’s like a death by a thousand cuts”. Lahinch’s Michael Vaughan expected it would result in an increase of “a good few hundred quid”. Allen Flynn of The Old Ground Hotel flagged that the approach was at odds with the level of support shown by the Government. “Government supports are keeping us going and then we have an individual authority that decides to increase the rates, it was a kick in the teeth to businesses more than anything”.
