LARE County Council were made aware of pyrite problems in the county as far back as April 2018 yet only submitted a report to the Department of Housing to seek inclusion in a redress scheme last month.

Chief Executive of the local authority, Pat Dowling was informed three years ago by Clare TD, Joe Carey (FG) that homes in the county

were infected with pyrite and that it was recommended to seek inclusion in a remediation scheme, similar to the approach in Limerick.

No response was received by Deputy Carey from Mr Dowling when the alarm was first sounded.

Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has told members of the Clare Pyrite Action Group that they will know within “a matter of weeks” if they are to be included in the redress scheme.

Garda Station on Tuesday evening, The Blue Knights in conjunction with Little Blue Heroes gave Honorary Garda Dylan Tobin his official personal issue of a BMW Garda motorbike.

A group of twenty Blue Knight motorcyclists accompanied by members from the road policing unit of the Clare Garda Division and Honorary Garda Tobin travelled in convoy to the Ennis station from the Inn

at Dromoland. Garda Claire Haugh met Dylan at the rally point and also gave him a tour of Ennis Garda Station with his older brother and sister.

Chief Superintendent Seán Colleran and Superintendent Brendan McDonagh attended the ceremony as did members from several stations as they gave Dylan a warm welcome to Ennis Garda Station.

VP of the Blue Knights, Brendan Condon spoke on behalf of the organisations and presented the BMW motorcycle to a surprised H/ Gda Tobin. Keen motorcyclist and comedian Pat Shortt also joined the celebrations as did motorcyclists who travelled from all over the country to attend.

Dylan’s parents, Angela and Tom Tobin were in shock at the amount of support for their son. “Dylan was quick to get the hang of the bike and will be soon getting to know all the other controls that are on the bike. May he have many happy times on his BMW bike and a huge thank you to the Blue Knights and Little Blue Heroes,” his father Tom told The Clare Echo.

Investigation continues after death of Niall O’Brien in Greece PÁRAIC MCMAHON

REEK Police are continuing their investigations into the death of Broadford hurler Niall O’Brien (22) with a judicial investigation to take place today (Thursday).

From Castletroy in Co Limerick, Niall died while holidaying on the island of Ios in Greece in the early hours of Monday morning. He had been on holidays with a group of 20 friends when the incident occurred.

Despite initial reports that Niall died after being struck by a car causing him to fall on the road, it has now emerged that it was a hit from another male that led to him hitting the ground. His body has been taken to Athens where a post-mortem will be carried out.

on Thursday, to hear whether or not charges will be brought against him. The 20-year old Irish suspect

was not known to Mr O’Brien and will testify before a judicial investigation.

Although he lived across the road from the grounds of Monaleen GAA Club in Limerick, Niall lined out with his father’s club Broadford, playing his most recent match for the club’s Junior side over a week ago. Niall was the star man for Broadford in 2019 when they defeated Newmarket-on-Fergus in the U21B decider, he hit 1-11 in the replay to see Broadford claim the title for the first time in 14 years.

In a statement, Broadford GAA said they were left with “a broken heart” at “the sad passing of one our great characters and players”. It added, “Niall, along with his three brothers, has given great service to Broadford Hurling club”.

The statement continued, “Niall’s large circle of friends will remember him as a hugely popular, larger than life character. Niall was at the centre of every gathering, whether

it be sporting or socially, and his good humour and witty comments kept everybody entertained. Both Broadford and Monaleen will be a much sadder place without him”.

He was a student at the University of Limerick where he was about to enter fourth year studying financial maths. Niall was a member of Castletroy Golf Club where he also worked part-time behind the bar. “It is a massive shock for the club and has cast a gloom over everyone,” said Dermot Coughlan, Honorary Secretary of the Men’s Committee at Castletroy Golf Club.

Niall was part of the Castletroy Boys Team of 2014 which won the Munster Championship.

Consular assistance is being provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs to his family which includes his parents Mike and Anne plus his three brothers, Cian, Eoin and Alan. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust has confirmed it was liaising with the deceased’s family.

by PÁRAIC McMAHON OCTOBER of next year has been identified as the planned start for the commercial operation of the Synchronous Compensator at Moneypoint.

The ESB briefed Clare politicians in recent days on the ongoing work for their Green Atlantic plans at Moneypoint.

Four main projects are associated with the development. This includes the Synchronous Compensator on the Moneypoint site, the onshore hub upon which it is planned toconstruct the wind turbine foundations and assemble the wind turbines before floating them to site, the offshore project which will be spread across at least two phases totalling 1,400MW, with the first phase planned for delivery in 2028. The medium term Hydrogen facility onsite which will convert excess offshore wind energy to Hydrogen for storage and other uses is the final project in the plans.

Work on the construction of the Synchronous Compensator is due to commence shortly with the installation of the main equipment from Siemens due to occur in April 2022. Commissioning of the new plant is planned for mid-2022 with commercial operation in October 2022.

When complete, this compensator will be the first in the country and will incorporate the world’s largest flywheel used for grid stability purposes which will promote the connection of greater volumes of renewable energy onto the electricity system.

According to ESB, work on the onshore hub is progressing well with ongoing engagement with Clare County Council and other key stakeholders in the region. The planning application process has commenced with the appointment of an environmental consultant carrying out early stage site assessments and long lead ecology surveys. An

A socio-economic report assessing the potential job creation and value to the economy of the projected is also to be completed.

Engagement continues with the Department of Energy and Climate Change on the utilisation of ESB’s hybrid connection at Moneypoint and acceleration of plans for floating offshore projects while the overall design for the offshore wind projects is to be finalised with ESB and Equinor.

Members of the project team are currently in the process of reviewing the Government’s recently published documentation on the Maritime Area Planning Bill to ascertain its implications for plans at Moneypoint.

Furore continues over future of Ennis NS walking bus PÁRAIC MCMAHON

NGER is brewing in Ennis as the country’s biggest walking bus faces cancellation putting a primary school and business park owners at loggerheads.

Clare County Council’s planning department has launched an investigation into the current cancellation of the popular walking initiative while The Clare Echo has learned that security personnel have been hired to prevent Westpoint Business Park’s use as a meeting point.

Ennis National School have had a walking bus in operation as far back as 2009. Since the school moved to its current site at Ashline on the Kilrush Rd, the car park belonging to Curley’s Furniture and now Westpoint Business Park has been used as the assembly point each morning at 08:30am for the past eight years. Frustrated parents and guardians made contact with The Clare Echo when it emerged in recent days that the initiative was at risk of cancellation. The school said it received notification at the “eleventh hour”

were ignored by both parties. A spokesperson for Clare County Council confirmed that they had been made aware of “access issues” at the Business Park for school drop-offs.

School principal, Brian Troy previously told The Clare Echo that Ennis NS’s walking bus was “the biggest and most successful in Ireland”. The situation is under review by Ennis NS’s Board of Management. “The en-

tire school community is most disappointed at the development over the past few days.

We believed that we had the co-operation of Westpoint Business Park up to recently”.

Management of Westpoint Business Park detailed that they have been “dealing with this matter” for the past 18 months, its management includes current Clare senior hurling boss Brian Lohan.

After the HSE opened an outpatients department in March of this year the “situation on the ground has changed substantially,” management commented while adding that the walking bus to school is now operating “with up to 60 to 80 cars using the premises twice daily. It is not sustainable that a private developer on private property is required to meet the parking requirements for the Ennis National School”.

“We have repeatedly asked for our basic conditions namely and indemnity from the principal and the board of management and the increased costs of insurance to be met.

The school claim that their insurance cover will cover our liability is simply not true.

For the record, two insurers have refused to quote us with the other increasing the premium by 12% simply because of the presence of the walking bus,” the statement added.

'Ongoing flooding at extensive Newmarket-on-Fergus farm'

by PÁRAIC McMAHON ONGOING flooding problems at “a very extensive dairy farm” in Newmarket-on-Fergus have led to appeals for repairs and upgrades to the access road to it.

Clare County Council were called on by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) “to repair and upgrade the road” in Mooghaun, Newmarket-on-Fergus leading to the entrance of Paddy McCormack’s house and farm “due to heavy flooding at various times in the year”.

His proposal was seconded by Cllr John Crowe (FG).

An assessment will be completed to determine necessary measures, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett responded.

Cllr McMahon told a recent sitting of the Shannon Municipal District that it is an “ongoing flooding problem” during periods of heavy rain. He explained, “It is a very extensive dairy farm of nearly 200 cows."

He said that the road is used a link to East Clare and by people travelling to and from both Quin and Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Five Clare broadcasters shortlisted for radio awards FIVE Clare broadcasters have been shortlisted for the 2021 IMRO Awards, writes Páraic McMahon.

For the second year in a row, Sixmilebridge native Marie Crowe is in the running for Sports Broadcaster of the Year. It is also the second year on the trot that Ennis based John Cooke has been shortlisted as News Reporter of the Year. The former host of Clare FM’s Morning Focus is a regular voice on RTÉ’s Drivetime.

He is not the only Clare nominee in this category with Ennis’ Brian O’Connell also nominated. The published author is a popular voice on RTÉ Radio One’s Today with Claire Byrne and Drivetime shows.

The Split Season which was produced by Shannon’s Seán Reidy and Graham O’Toole is shortlisted as the Best Sports Story. They

profiled how top inter-county players such as Niamh Collins, Declan Hannon and Conor McDonald coped during a highly restricted 2020 championship. Reidy is currently a producer with Newstalk.

Siofra Mulqueen of Barefield has been included in the shortlist for an IMRO. Her report titled ‘Moyross – The Forgotten Part of Limerick’ which appeared on Newstalk’s Pat Kenny is one of the five nominees for the Community/Social Action gong.

Between Worlds, a Clare FM documentary on the late Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin is in contention for the Arts, Music and Culture Documentary award. The station is also nominated for local station of the year. Sally-Anne Barrett, a regular contributor to Clare FM is nominated as local speech broadcaster of the year for her work with Galway Bay FM.

RESIDENT of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins returned to Co Clare for one of his first visits since the onset of the pandemic on Tuesday morning alongside his wife Sabina.

He travelled from Doolin to Inis Oírr for a performance of Laethanta Sona (Happy Days), staged on the island as part of the Galway International Arts Festival.

Directed by Sarah Jane Scaife and translated into Irish by Mícheál Ó Chongaile, the play will be performed at Chreig an Staic on Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands off the coast of County Galway.

As part of the performance, President Higgins and Sabina visited the ‘Laethanta Sona: Saol ar an Creig’ exhibition, which celebrates the process of Laethanta Sona and the people of the island.

Born in Limerick on 18th April 1941, Michael D. was first elected President of Ireland in 2011 and was victorious in his attempt to win a second term in 2018.

At the age of five, he and his brother John moved to Ballycar, Newmarket-on-Fergus where they attended primary school before starting second level education at St Flannan’s College under the care of their uncle and aunt.

By the time he started primary school aged seven, Michael D. was already able to read,

admitting that he learned to read mostly from newspapers.

He was an active handballer in Newmarket-on-Fergus and also represented the Blues on the hurling field.

Speaking to The Clare Echo in Doolin, President Higgins recalled his school days in the Banner County and his relationship with

his sister Kathleen who resides in Shannon and his brother John who lives in Newmarket-on-Fergus.

President Higgins said he was looking forward to attending more sporting games over the coming months while also referencing the death of his friend and former Clare hurler Jim ‘Puddin’ Cullinan from Newmarket-on-Fergus last February.

Both Michael D. and Sabina travelled on the Star of Doolin Ferry operated by Doolin2Aran Ferries and before setting sail, they received a presentation from Doolin2Aran Ferries Director, Donie Garrihy. Presents for the President’s dogs Bród and Misneach plus a Michael D. tea cosy were included in the gifts.

Before stepping foot on the Star of Doolin Ferry, President Higgins also spoke with one local woman and admired her two dogs.

Members of the public that interacted with the President remarked that his love for dogs and animals was evident, “He is a very down to earth President and we are very proud of him,” one Doolin native told The Clare Echo.

Some of the President’s staff stayed at Doolin Sunset B&B on Monday evening to organise the itinerary.

'Serious concerns' prompt Council to seek re-design for Drumbiggle development

“SERIOUS concerns” on the visual impact of a major development planned for Ennis have been raised

by Clare County Council, writes Páraic McMahon.

Further information has been requested by the local authority on an application for 46 residential units, a digital hub and cafe in Drumbiggle in Ennis. The site fronts onto Drumbiggle Rd, Buttermarket St and Simm’s Lane in a historic part of the town.

EKO Integrated Services Ltd are behind the application, it is the same company that was paid €115.5m by the State to obtain personal protective equipment (PPE) during the pandemic, the second highest amount re-

ceived by a company in the country.

Height, massing and scale of the plans were described as “not acceptable” by the County Council.

The developers have been asked to submit a re-design for the entire development which has “regard to the existing built environment and building lines as well as the historic context of the site.

An “over-dominance” of two bedroom units was labelled as unsatisfactory by the local authority.

Local residents had expressed their intention to fight the development “tooth and nail” while flagging that Áras Uí Cochlainn, a block of apartments in the area had been the scene of some

anti-social behaviour before its demolition in the past two decades.

Submissions from the public warned of anti-social behaviour and “chaotic parking”. Some residents have expressed their view that a car park would be more suitable.

Stephen Loftus in a submission on behalf of local residents outlined, “There is a certain amount of anti-social behaviour and these residents do not need any more. Ennis West, from Drumbiggle Road to upper Cloughleigh have absorbed a lot of this behaviour and it’s time we got a break.

Good, decent, honest people have suffered in silence for many years. What other side of town has been treated like us on the west side.”

Shortage of housing was referenced by EKO as part of their application. “The development has been designed to meet the demand for high quality, sustainable homes in Ennis and is designed to integrate with the existing context. At a time when there is unprecedented demand for housing, a mixture of apartments and town houses was considered appropriate”.

18 month ASD waiting list delaying child development PÁRAIC MCMAHON

NE hundred and fifty four children in Clare are currently waiting for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment in what is an 18 month long backlog.

Although the amount of children in the county waiting for an assessment has dropped from 206 in May, the backlog continues to worry parents across Co Clare. A child who requires an assessment to access a special class (pre-school or school) or special school placement is prioritised for assessment by the Clare Children’s Disability Network Team.

A spokesperson for HSE MidWest Community Healthcare told The Clare Echo, “lack of an ASD diagnosis is not a barrier to accessing support from Clare Children’s Disability Network Team”.

Ennis native Kieran O’Loughlin has told The Clare Echo of his growing frustration and worry as his five year old son Jack has been waiting over 18 months for an ASD assessment with no clarity provided on a potential date. “We can tell that he needs this little bit of help, if he got his assessment and was diagnosed he would get more support.

We can see in comparison with his sister and even in school we can see signs that he is on the spectrum”.

Changes in Jack’s behaviour have been noticeable as the wait continues, Kieran admitted. “Jack finds it difficult at times to control his emotions. Sometimes he would play with his sister but if she was tired or something, he would get quite frustrated if she wouldn’t play with him, he might turn that to hitting

her or scratching her or some form of violence to get a reaction out of her”.

Jack received an exemption to do a second year of pre-school for his social development, the assistance of staff at the Naíonra Céimeanna Beaga was lauded by Kieran. “He is five now, I don’t think there is any harm in him doing the second year of pre-school, we do want to see him progress to primary school next year and to move on with friends he has made in school and be like any other boy in school. He needs his assessment, the sooner the better to help Jack long-term”.

Much worse cases exist across the county, Kieran believed as a result of the wait for an assessment. “Pre COVID we had long assessment times for autism, it has only been exasperated now. Kids have suffered a lot with COVID, missing school and missing out on clubs and sports, there could have been a lot more done for these wait times, a plan should have been put in place to help the situation,” he said while adding that similar services “could have been brought back sooner because they are beyond essential and really needed to continue”.

Clare Children’s Disability Network Team have provided the option of remote appointments, a spokesperson flagged. It is one of six such teams in the Mid-West with approval recently received for a seventh.

There has been an approximate eight per cent growth year on year for the Mid-West’s Children’s Disability Network Teams caseload.

In 2012, the CHO3 caseload was 2,796. In July 2021, the caseload stood at 5,855 including the waiting list. The profile of children accessing the teams has changed considerably over the years with a significant increase in ASD and

behavioural challenges. In 2016 the average percentage of Children

with ASD on the Caseload was 48%. In 2021 this average has risen

to 69% across Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary.

Broadford's long wait for sewerage scheme almost over PÁRAIC MCMAHON

50 year wait for a sewerage scheme in Broadford is to end this October with the infrastructure to be approved in the coming months.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien (FF) visited the East Clare village on Friday evening where he issued a strong commitment to PJ Mason and members of the Broadford Action Group that the scheme would be given the green light in October under the National Development Plan

review.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Minister O’Brien confirmed his intentions to help Broadford.

“I’m going to meet the residents in Broadford because there are

a number of towns and villages across the country not just exclusively on the west coast which basically have no wastewater infrastructure or no Irish Water wastewater infrastructure and we need

to see how we will be able to help there.

“We also have Cooraclare, Doolin and Carrigaholt, every county has those issues which gives you the scale of the job we have to do.

Last year, I gave €188m extra in capital to Irish Water, now we have to look at the towns and villages where we want people to start living in again and to regenerate, we can only do that if we have the wastewater and freshwater capacity to do so. I’d expect in the National Development Plan review that we are working on a scheme that is able to help villages like Broadford”.

Young people have been forced out of the village due to the absence of the infrastructure, Deputy

Cathal Crowe (FF) remarked. He praised the relentless campaigning of locals over the past five decades.

“For all intents and purposes this is a shovel ready project, and this sets it apart from other unsewered villages, in that once funding is allocated, it can be delivered in a relatively short timeframe”.

Clare TD, Michael McNamara (IND) has requested the Minister to consider including Carrigaholt, Cooraclare and Doolin in a pilot scheme providing funding for infrastructure in rural villages that currently are outside Irish Water’s investment programmes.

Majority of COVID - 19 restrictions to be lifted

by PÁRAIC McMAHON AGREEMENT has been reached between the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and the Government leading to the next phase of the country’s response to COVID-19.

Over 88% of the population over 18 are fully vaccinated, with almost 92% of adults (aged 18 and over) having received at least one dose. Subject to the continuation of this progress, the country will enter the next phase on the 22nd October, and it is likely to last until at least next Spring.

This phase will see the majority of restrictions lifted and replaced by guidance and advice. The Government has agreed that during the interim period between 1st September and 22nd October, we will continue our careful and gradual approach to re-opening, while supporting maximum reach of the vaccine programme and allowing time to achieve the full benefits for all those currently being vaccinated.

As of September 6th, we will see an easing of restrictions on

organised indoor and outdoor events and mass gatherings.

From that date, theatre, music and live events can take place for vaccinated people at 60% capacity indoors and 75% capacity outdoors.

All restrictions are to be eased from October 22nd which includes the reopening of nightclubs and limits on outdoor events and activities. A vaccination certificate will only be needed when travelling internationally from this date.

As part of this phase, the Government also agreed to the transitioning of the public health response and governance arrangements out of emergency response mode, the maintenance of a robust ongoing public health response, including a vaccine booster programme and economic measures including the targeting of supports and the return to work places. Measures that will continue to remain in place include self-isolation when we have symptoms, mask wearing in healthcare settings, indoor retail and on public transport.

RE We Free? is the latest single from double platinum selling Mick Flannery, and one of Ireland’s most exciting newcomers, Susan O’Neill.

The song is the fourth single from the pair’s upcoming collaborative album ‘In the Game’, coming September 10th, which charts a couple’s coming together and falling apart, a journey familiar to most. It charts the highs and lows of the game of love, that raw space in the human condition can leave one most vulnerable.

Clare singers feature in Brophy’s frontline choir BLOWN away by the bravery of the nation’s healthcare workers, David Brophy set up his first ever nationwide choir as he heard their stories and put a face to the people behind the PPE. This includes two frontline workers based in Clare - Gemma Brolly (44), who worked on a COVID-19 ward in Ennis Hospital, and Jenny Moloney (64), a staff nurse in Riverdale House Nursing Home in Ardnacrusha.

A documentary on the choir will feature among RTÉ’s Autumn schedule.

Over the course of the series, David will meet with healthcare workers from across the country as they begin their journey in a Level 5 lockdown, initially rehearsing on

Zoom. Despite technical difficulties and with the help of Assistant Choir Director Róisín Savage, the group creates a hugely emotive and powerful music video dedicated to their healthcare colleagues who lost their lives to Covid-19.

The music video sees the choir sing an arrangement of the U2 song ‘Sometimes You Can’t Make it on Your Own’ and was fittingly filmed on the campus of St. Vincent’s University Hospital, projected onto the external wall of a building that served as a Covid-19 ward.

As the country slowly opens up in line with Government guidelines, the series will watch on as the choir eventually meet for in person rehearsals.

Bonding over their shared experiences they’ll begin to address their personal wounds from the pandemic and come together to perform at a very special one-off concert.

“Throughout the course of the pandemic, the whole country has been in awe of the nation’s healthcare workers. When the world stopped, they were the ones who kept on going, despite the risks involved.

Concertina Cruinniú is an annual community, non-commercial event organised by Oidhreacht an Chláir in promotion of the musical and cultural heritage of Clare. It provides a packed programme of top-level tuition, concerts and lectures, featuring most of the leading concertina players in Ireland.

There will be small classes for all grades (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Master) delivered by a panel of experienced tutors and overseen by Master Tutor Noel Hill.

ARMERS in Shannon have been posed problems by the lack of security gates on the entrance road to the Tradaree wastewater treatment plant, the county’s first citizen has claimed.

Provision of security gates “with pedestrian styles” on the entrance road to the Tradaree sewage treatment plant were sought by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) at a recent sitting of the Shannon Municipal District.

Vehicle access to the Sli na Mara road would be prevented if physical barriers were introduced, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett warned. “The road is used by members of the public, farmers,

Garden Allotment holders and staff of the Tradaree wastewater treatment plant, he noted.

Mellett added, “Restricting access to pedestrians would require a change in status to the road and leave a requirement on Clare County Council to provide an alternative means of access for other users”.

Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Ryan detailed that farmers in the area had made their concerns known to him.

“People are using the walkway with dogs off the leash and there is people complaining that there is cattle there in the afternoons. One farmer told me at least an acre of his land was damaged with people driving on his land, at one stage those gates used to be locked at 7pm in the evening, it is a problem for the farmers”.

Such concerns should be brought before An Garda Síochána, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) be-

lieved.

“This is a public road that people have a right to the access. The

issues referred to are for the Gardaí to address, they are law and order.

Clare County Council own a large swathe of land in the area”.

“It is a public road but Clare County Council have control over it and have to have some sympathy, Gardaí can’t be there 24 hours a day. There has to be accountability on Clare County Council’s side,” Cllr Ryan replied.

Potential risks to the treatment plant must be taken into consideration, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) flagged.

“A farmer has informed me that if there was a storm, it all depends on the way the wind is blowing that if they were blown down the whole station would come to a halt which is very serious”. lACCESS: The Tradaree water treatment plant

‘Government not helping one iota to keep Airport open’

AS LEVELS of international travel continue to grow, Clare’s first citizen has requested that free parking be trialled at Shannon Airport while a long-standing councillor has accused the Government of offering no assistance to keep the doors open at the international airport.

In his first proposal to the local authority since becoming Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) appealed to the Council to request management of the international airport to “provide free car parking for airline passengers to try and boost passenger numbers at the airport” as a trial.

Vociferous praise for the motion was echoed by Cllr Ann Norton (IND). “Anything that can get people into Shannon is so important when we see the lack of flights coming and going from Shannon”. She believed

passengers of Dublin Airport are blind to the benefit of Shannon which she labelled as “a crying shame”.

Trialling free parking alongside “a suite of incentives” could make a difference, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) maintained. “ Tickets to popular attractions in Clare such as the Cliffs of Moher need to be linked to passengers flying into Shannon, Cllr Joe Killeen (FF) emphasised, “we need to link all those things together and put something together”.

Shannon is in direct competition with Dublin Airport, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) said as he backed the call to add the proposal to other packages. “We have to produce a package to counter-fight what Dublin can produce. It seems Aer Lingus has deserted us, they have given no time or date on when they will resume flights, the Government is not helping one iota to keep Shannon open”.

NNIS has been launched as an Age Friendly Town at an event held in the garden of the Old Ground Hotel.

As part of the Clare Age Friendly Strategy, Ennis is joining the national Age Friendly Cities and Counties Programme which aims to make Ireland a truly great place in which to grow old.

The Ennis Age Friendly Town initiative is built on the recognition of the valuable role that older people can and should play in shaping their communities for the better. The Age Friendly Town Team have worked with the Clare Older People’s Council in this regard.

Ennis Municipal District is progressing a number of projects throughout Ennis Town and its environs to make the town more accessible. Funding of €10.5m was secured under the Govern-

ment’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund projects for public realm enhancements, with a further €950,000 secured for various works from the National Transport Authority under Active Travel grants.

Some of the other initiatives as part of the project include: an age-friendly business programme with Ennis Chamber of Commerce, physical activity programmes for older adults by Active Ennis and Clare Sports Partnership, community policing and crime prevention initiatives by Ennis Gardaí as well as valuable input provided by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Larry Hally, Clare Older People’s Council, said: “As a member of the Ennis Age Friendly Town Team, I am delighted to see all of the progress made to both the development of public spaces and other initiatives being delivered for the benefit of older people.

“We believe that Ennis as an Age Friendly Town will benefit everyone in the community, not just the older people.”

Housing Minister visits Ashline

by STUART HOLLY MINISTER for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, recently visited the construction site of the Ashline social housing development in Ennis, which will see the provision of 40 social housing units through a direct build scheme by Clare County Council.

The schemes being developed to help meet the social housing need in the Ennis area, with an approved budget of €10.534m.

Speaking at today’s site visit, Minister O’Brien said: “It’s so encouraging to see the progress being made on this excellent development here in Ennis.

“This is exactly the kind of project the government is prioritising as we ramp up our supply of public housing – a mixed development of 40 new-build houses that will soon

be providing secure, high-quality homes for families and individuals on our waiting lists.

“My department is absolutely committed to funding and supporting local authorities to build new homes.

“Clare County Council have developed a strong pipeline of new public homes, and the Government is determined to support them and other local authorities across the country as we continue to build on that progress.”

Cllr PJ Ryan, Cathaoirleach, Clare County Council, said: “This scheme here in Ennis is just one of an ambitious programme of delivery across the county and I am pleased to see the pace and quality of construction which has returned following the challenges of Covid-19.”

Housing Minister visits homes affected by pyrite PÁRAIC MCMAHON

OMEOWNERS in Clare affected by the presence of defective concrete blocks in their homes will know within “a matter of weeks” if they are eligible for inclusion on a redress scheme.

Currently the Clare Pyrite Action Group has 72 members who say their house is infected by pyrite, on top of this two housing estates constructed by Clare County Council and two prominent buildings in the county are also impacted while it is believed that hundreds of houses in Clare, at least have pyrite.

On July 29th, the County Council submitted an application to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to extend the Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme to Clare.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD (FF) during an official visit to the county outlined his aspirations to proceed with the application.

“We’re assessing it like the applications that would have come in for Mayo and Donegal, we’re not dragging our feet on it, I’ve assured the group of that. We want to bring the review of the submission to conclusion as soon as we can, there is no budgetary issue of that and I assured the group of that too. As long as the criteria is met, I don’t see any issue, I’m here to help the homeowners”.

He met with Dr Martina Cleary, Mary Hanley and Michelle Mansfield of the Clare Pyrite Action Group on Friday morning while later visiting the home of Ms Hanley in Drumline that day.

Sufficient funds exist within the Department, Minister O’Brien stated. “I don’t know what it will cost until the submission goes through but we’ve sufficient funds for this year and will have sufficient funds for next year”.

The Minister said he has no intention of letting this occur. “One thing that might be a small advantage is I’ve quite a depth of knowledge with regard to this subject and experience in my own area.

“I’ve been campaigning from the backbenches since 2012 for a pyrite scheme so I think the residents here will have someone who is here to help not to hinder”.

“I intend to deliver. I’m not being facetious

about this in any shape or form, already I’ve visited homes that have been remediated, I’ve seen homes where they’ve been re-certified and what it means to people and families, it is my job as Minister to deliver but it is also my job to be responsible and realistic about the timeframe for doing that, to fix what we have and the issues particularly in the West with Donegal, Mayo, Clare and other counties, it is going to take a number of years but the scheduling of that work is important, we have to give people certainty”.

‘I don’t have ten years to wait, I could be six feet under so I want my house replaced and repaired’

by PÁRAIC McMAHON IMMINENT action is needed on the inclusion of Clare in the Defective Concrete Block Scheme, an affected homeowner in the county has said while revealing the toll it has taken on mental health.

Mary Hanley welcomed the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien (FF) to her home in Drumline, Newmarket-on-Fergus on Friday afternoon to clearly highlight the issues pyrite is having in the county.

Dozens of members of the Clare Pyrite Action Group attended the visit as did Deputy Cathal Crowe (FF), Deputy Joe Carey (FG), Senator Timmy Dooley (FF), Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Cllr PJ Ryan (IND), Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) and Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF).

Assurances were given by the Minister, Ms Hanley told the gathering on Friday af-

ternoon.

“Our houses are crumbling down around us, we don’t have time on our side. Our young people in their thirties and forties, they have huge mortgages, they have children and houses crumbling, all of that has to be taken into account.

“Then there are people like myself who are on our pensions, we certainly don’t have forever to wait, I don’t have ten years to wait, I could be six feet under so I want my house replaced and repaired”.

Homeowners in Clare cannot afford to wait a decade, the former principal of St Caimin’s Community School stated.

“A number of my past pupils in this area who are in their early thirties and have young children with huge mortgages but their houses are crumbling down around them.

“The young people don’t have time because they have heavy mortgages, I’ve spoken to quite a lot of young people in this

area, they have serious problems and we need to look after those young people because they are running into difficulty financially. The older people and there are quite a lot in this area, a number of them are well into their seventies, they are not well and this has really knocked them for six, they feel let down and disappointed”.

She added, “I know what it is like, they are suffering in silence, some people are getting quite ill, there is a mental health issue here, some of us are tough out and are well able for it but I’ve had many sleepless nights”.

Following core sampling, the Hanley home built in 1988 was found to be category four which recommends demolition.

The Vice Chair of the Clare Pyrite Action Group is adamant much more than the 72 members of their Group are impacted by pyrite.

“It is a shame that so many people in Co Clare and it’s not just sixty or seventy, there

are hundreds of houses in Co Clare with defective concrete blocks, I think we’re hitting the tip of the iceberg”.

More people will join the group following the Minister’s visit, she believed while expressing confidence that the Dublin Fingal TD would be influenced solely by the evidence in front of him.

“I think the Minister is happy enough with whatever is in front of him at the moment, he is not stupid, he knows well there are more houses in Co Clare but they haven’t come forward.

“We encourage them to come forward, there is strength in numbers, it is very easy to contact the Clare Pyrite Action Group, it is confidential and we don’t spread news around.

“Once they meet other people with the same problem, then they get more confidence, it is reassuring to know you’re not the only person in this position”.

Council aware of pyrite problem for last three years

CLARE TD has said action was not taken by Clare County Council when they were first made aware that homes in the county were infected with pyrite, writes Páraic McMahon.

The Clare Echo has learned that Joe Carey TD (FG) first raised the matter with Clare County Council Chief Executive, Pat Dowling in April 2018 having submitted a parliamentary question before Dáil Éireann in February of that year.

Efforts in Limerick to be included in a pyrite remediation scheme were brought to the attention of Clare County Council as they were encouraged to put together a similar application.

No response was issued to the Clarecastle TD by May 2018 when subsequent correspondence was issued to Mr Dowling.

An application was submitted to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage by Clare County Council on 29th July 2021, three years later.

Senior officials within the Council such as Director of Service, Anne Haugh who has been praised as one of the key figures in the application submitted last month was unaware of Deputy Carey’s initial correspondence, The Clare Echo understands.

Deputy Carey told The Clare Echo he was advised

by Ministers to contact Clare County Council when he first became aware of pyrite in Clare over three years ago. “Unfortunately Clare County Council didn’t act on that representation which I made repeatedly back then,” he said.

“It is a pity that the

Council didn’t act at that time, it would have saved time, a number of residents are in their latter years, time is of the essence, it is a pity that they didn’t act at that particular time but they are on board now and are intensively working on this issue for the past year,” Carey added.

A 100 per cent redress scheme was endorsed by Deputy Carey. “We want to get the best possible result for the people of Clare suffering from pyrite issues and have done so for years, it is time we have got into that scheme and put a process in place to do that”.

He continued, “I don’t think it is right that homeowners through no fault of their own should have to bear the cost associated with pyrite and the fallout from it, I’ve made that case in writing and have spoken verbally to Minister O’Brien and continue to do so”.

In a statement to The Clare Echo, Clare County Council confirmed the issue was raised with them in April 2018. “The Building Control Section had not been made aware of any issues pertaining to pyrite in County Clare at that time.

“Contact was made with the Building Standards Section of the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government with regard to the issue and the Department advised that it was a matter for the Pyrite Resolution Board to determine if the State Pyrite Remediation Scheme is to be extended to County Clare”.

Homeowners in Clare with the presence of pyrite have damage varying from vertical and horizontal cracks to crumbling blocks and looming demolition. Many of these individuals have had to carry out testing costing up to €10,000 to identify the exact nature of the deleterious materials in their home.

Speaking in Co Clare on Friday, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien (FF) detailed his ambition to pursue companies found to have been selling defective concrete blocks which has to the devastation.

Minister O’Brien stated, “Those responsible, I’m going to use every avenue I have open to me to pursue them and I’ve charged the Attorney General with that work and to come back to me to see what we can do legally, I said that publicly a number of weeks ago and I take the opportunity here in Clare to do that again, my first priority is to give certainty to people that their homes will be made good but

this is a significant expense for the exchequer and there have been in some instances where builders have paid in, very few, but in some instances there have been. We’re going to look at every legal avenue available to us to go after those who are responsible for the scourge that is pyrite in the block and other construction defects which I’m working on too”.

Newmarket-on-Fergus homeowner, Joe O’Donnell questioned the Minister on what he was going to do with the “culprits in all of this”. He said that the blocks in their family home came from “the biggest company in Ireland” who continue to have healthy finances.

In response to this, Minister O’Brien said, “If you look at the legislation which goes right back to 2012, within the legislation that this scheme has come from, it does give the State the ability to go back and seek recompense and be able to get compensation and for those responsible to pay in. We’re pursuing that, I haven’t got the report back from the Attorney General, the first bill I produced on pyrite was on this very thing and extending the limitations so we could go back and seek recompense. In a couple of instances, builders have remediated themselves, I know of schemes where that has been done, I’m not going to leave any stone unturned”.

Action group founder upbeat following 'positive meeting' with Minister OPTIMISM has been expressed by the founder of the Clare Pyrite Action Group that Department officials will move swiftly to deal with Clare’s application for inclusion in the Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme, writes Páraic McMahon.

Dr Martina Cleary was one of the three members of the Clare Pyrite Action Group to meet with the Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien (FF) during his visit to the county on Friday. She said that their engagement was “a positive meeting”.

They have been informed that a decision will be made within a matter of weeks. “He listened very carefully and said it will be a matter of weeks and that he has no intention of dragging this out. Work has already

begun on reviewing the report which has gone in, it has been with them a month and he acknowledged that.

“The decision will be made, he also detached it from the procedure going on with the working group, it is now contingent on any further delays that might happen but a decision for Clare will be made, whatever is negotiated will come down the line but the getting onto a grant scheme will not be dependent on a timeline of the working group,” the Crusheen woman added.

Minister O’Brien commended the “positive relationship” between the Clare Pyrite Action Group and Clare County Council, particularly its Director of Service Anne Haugh.

VER the years I have learned so much about hair, what are the dos and don'ts and what are the right products to use. I have tried and tested a lot of hair care essentials now, but currently I’ve kept to a solid list that I absolutely swear by.

3: ANTI- BREAKAGE SPRAY This is the best for after you shower while your hair is still wet. I usually spray this towards the ends of my hair to avoid any breakage when I brush it wet. Everyone’s hair is more sensitive and prone to breakage when it is wet so we want to avoid this at all costs.

The spray I use is Semi Dilino Anti- Breakage Fluid by Alfaparf which can also be bought in your local salon. After the spray I apply more hair oil towards the ends of my hair and then begin to dry it with the hair drier. Sometimes I try to leave it dry naturally as much as possible to limit the mount of heat in contact with my hair. After these steps I sometimes style it and then apply a small bit more hair oil to smoothen out my curls.

1: HAIR OIL This is more important than ever, especially if you have dry hair like me. My favourite hair oils to use are the Semi Dilino Cristalli Liquidi

I use this at the very start of my routine to avoid any breakage. I wet my hair brush to dampen my hair and then I add my hair oil all over before washing it in the shower. 2: CONDITION, SHAMPOO, CONDITION This little step has helped out my hair so much.

I usually get very knotty hair from the shower especially when I only recently got my highlights done. Due to my hair colour it tends to do this a lot. I found conditioning it twice has really helped it soften and feel really clean.

Reducing mattress disposal costs won’t curb dumping PÁRAIC MCMAHON

EDUCING the charges for the disposal of mattresses will not necessarily result in less illegal dumping, senior officials in Clare County Council have flagged.

In a motion before the local authority, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) had requested the Council to consider a reduction in charges on a trial for the disposal of mattresses and suites of furniture at the recycling centres in the county “to see if it

would alleviate the dumping of this material on the side of the public roads”.

Senior engineer in the Council, Cyril Feeney insisted the current rates at their civic amenity sites in Scariff, Lisdeen and Inagh were “very competitive for the disposal of large bulky items such as furniture and mattresses”.

Charges levied “only cover the basic cost of the disposal of these items,” he explained.

“Clare County Council would also have a concern that reducing charges would not actually alleviate the problem.

“From our experience, items such as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), which

are free to dispose of and recycle in all our amenity sites, continue to be illegally dumped on the side of public roads”.

Dealing with illegal dumping is coming at “a huge cost” to the Council, Cllr Ryan believed.

“I did a check and found to dispose of a double mattress costs €20 and three piece is €50 plus €10 each for seated cushions.

“That is an awful lot of money.

The polluter is not paying in this instance, it is the person who disposes of their rubbish properly”.

Mattresses and furniture suites are “littered all over the county,” Cllr Alan O’Callaghan (FF) stated.

“It is free to go to a lot of the centres in Clare to get rid of electrical goods but they still end up dumped all over our countryside”.

A levy on the sale of these goods is worth considering “so the owner pays for their disposal,” Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) suggested.

In the US when a consumer purchases a mattress or bulky item, the company drops it off but also takes away the replacement, Cllr

Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) noted.

South Clare is attracting “an awful lot of rubbish”, Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) observed.

He noted that the Gallows Hill has become “a hotspot for dumping”.

“Illegal dumping in this country particularly in Clare has gone out of hand,” Cllr Pat Daly (FF) agreed.

“If large skips were left in remote parts of the county for the day, that would help to prevent a share of illegal dumping,” Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) maintained.

A SAMARITANS volunteer raising awareness of the mental health charity by walking over 9,000 kms will visit the Samaritans Ennis and Clare branch as part of his tour.

He will arrive in Ennis at approximately 4pm on Saturday September 4th and will be overnighting in Ennis before making his way onto the Limerick branch of the Samaritans.

David Matthews is walking to all 201 Samaritans branches across Ireland and the United Kingdom to show people how a Samaritans volunteer is always there for them, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. David has been a Samaritans volunteer for 12 years.

Margaret MacMahon Ennis Branch Director said: “David has been an inspiration for Samaritans volunteers and callers and we can’t wait to welcome him to our branch.”

Starting in his hometown of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, in April 2019, David’s Listening Walk faced multiple delays due to coronavirus and subsequent lockdowns.

His journey has taken him across England, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man and Channel Islands. He hopes to return to his hometown Doncaster and branch by November.

David said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing the country and meeting the people while I’m there. It’s always nice if people stop for a little chat, or if a car toots and someone waves. It gives you a little spring in your step to keep going.”

His aim is also to raise awareness about Samaritans service, listen to people's experiences along the way, and recruit new volunteers too. He was also raised almost €20,000 to date. David said the highlight of his trip has been the people he’s met along the way, including volunteers at branches and members of the public. “I’ve really enjoyed it. The lowest point was the weather… I don’t mind a bit of rain but some days it rained day after day so you can’t dry out.”

Professor Vincent Cunnane appointed Founding President of new Technological University

T

HE chair of the Joint Governing Body of the AIT-LIT Consortium, Professor Tom Collins, has today welcomed the announcement by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD that Professor Vincent Cunnane (inset) is to be the first President of the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, writes Elaine Tubridy.

The appointment was announced by the Minister following an international recruitment process. The term of the appointment is eight years and Professor Cunnane will take up his post from the commencement of the new Technological University on October 1.

Commenting on the appointment of Professor Cunnane, Professor Collins said, "All in the consortium are very pleased that Vincent Cunnane is to be the inaugural President.

He has a distinguished record of achievement in the academic, research and development spheres. He is eminently qualified to lead the development of the TU and its contribution to the eco-

nomic, social and cultural life of the Midlands, Midwest and beyond. In that task he will be greatly assisted by the quality and commitment of the leadership team and staff of the TU.” Mr Liam Rattigan, outgoing Chair of AIT Governing Body also welcomed the ap-

pointment.

"I want to wish Vincent and all in the new TU every success as it embarks on this new phase of higher education," he stated.

Kilkee’s O’Regan Clare players to the fore on form in Antrim in Munster interpros

JAKE O’Regan of Kilkee finished 13th in the Antrim Coast Half Marathon (Elite Race A) representing his country on Sunday.

Ethiopia’s Jemal Yimer won the men’s race in a time of 60:30. Ryan Creech was the first Irish finisher, the Leevale AC runner was sixth in 63:23, the 29 year old earlier this month ran

a sub-49 minute 10 Mile earlier in Kilbeggan.

Seventh place fell to Paul O’Donnell of Dundrum South Dublin in

63:37 secs. Northern Irish athlete Stephen Scullion, who dropped out of the marathon at the Tokyo Olympics, finished 10th

in 63:54.

Clare’s very own O’Regan who is a member of St John’s AC took 13th spot in 64:16 and was the third athlete from the Republic of Ireland home.

The time of the 28 year old has been praised in Clare athletic circles.

A women’s world best time was set at the race by Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw (22) in a time of 63m43s.

WITH inter-provincial action continuing, Clare’s representation in the Munster ranks remains high.

Both Chisom Ugwueru and Aoife Corey (pictured) produced strong 80 minute performances for the Munster women’s side in the Interpros as they beat Ulster 50-5.

The two Clare backs made their debut for the province with Chisom scoring a try before half-time.

Clooney’s Siobhan McCarthy who is with the Railway RFC club in Dublin and Clodagh O’Halloran of Kilkishen who plays with UL Bohs lined out in the second row and back row respectively.

They welcome Connacht to Musgrave Park this coming Saturday in the second round.

On Saturday, the Munster U18 club side had five Clare representatives as

they lost to Ulster 17-14. Kilrush RFC’s Darragh Burns started in the back row with Craig Riordan of St Senan’s on the wing. Ennis RFC’s

Kildysart first to claim IFC quarter final spot

ITH just one round to go in the group stage in the intermediate football championship, seven of the eight quarter final places have yet to be filled.

Kildysart are safely through to the play offs and Corofin are all but there but they need something from their meeting with Wolfe Tones next week to seal their passage to the quarter finals.

Wolfe Tones also need at least a point from this game to make sure of qualification. A loss for the Shannon club allied to victory for Coolmeen over Naomh Eoin would see Coolmeen go ahead of the Shannon side on the head to head result. All this means that there is a lot at stake in this group in two weeks time.

It’s a similar situation in Group 3 where all four are still in with a chance of making the play offs.

O’Curry’s currently head the group and they face Éire Óg in round 3. The Townies must win this to keep their hopes of progress alive.

Shannon Gaels and the Banner meet in the other game in this group and who ever wins this one will progress to the play offs.

STRONG FINISH FROM WOLFE TONES

Following their surprise heavy first round loss to Coolmeen victory was crucial for Wolfe Tones

when they clashed with Naomh Eoin in round two.

At the end of a hard fought contest, the Shannon club had achieved the result which has put them right back in the mix for a place in the play off stage of the competition.

Having held a two point advantage at half time (0-8 to 0-6) things didn’t look good for Tones when they trailed by two points as the tie entered the final ten minutes but they finished strongly landing the last four points of the game to seal victory.

Corner forward Brian Monaghan played a key role in this win, shooting 0-7 on the evening with five of those scores coming from placed balls. Jayme O’Sullivan, Eoin Casey and Daithi Lohan were others to impress for the winners.

SPOILS SHARED IN NORTH CLARE DERBY

Kilfenora 2-9 Michael Cusacks 1-12 Venue: Ennistymon

North Clare neighbours and great rivals Kilfenora and Michael Cusacks shared the spoils when they clashed on Sunday afternoon.

Helped by a goal from Aidan McNamara, Michael Cusacks led at half time on a score of 1-5 to 0-5. Midway through the second half Kilfenora struck for a brace of goals from Micheal Duffy, the second from the penalty spot, after which they were three points ahead.

Cusacks bounced back strongly and Aidan McNamara kicked a

merited equaliser a few minutes from the final whistle.

EASY FOR KILDYSART

Kildysart 2-18 Liscannor 0-4 Venue: Quilty

Kildysart easily overcame the challenge of Liscannor on Saturday evening.

The winners, one of the favourites for the title, led from the outset helped by goals from Diarmuid O’Donnell who found the net in each half.

They dominated throughout the pitch and were well o n their way to collecting both points at the halfway point. Liscannor struggled for scores and even at this early stage of the championship, they look set to be involved in the relegation play off.

COROFIN IN CONTROL

Last year’s beaten finalists, Corofin, are clearly determined to go a step further this year.

They recorded their second win of the campaign on Saturday when they proved too strong for a Coolmeen side that failed to build on their big first round victory over Wolfe Tones.

Robin Mounsey (2), Fionn Clancy and Gearoid Cahill were the goalscorers for the winners who dominated in all sectors on the day despite again having to play without the injured Jamie Malone.

Brian Markham was the Coolmeen goalscorer on a day when Aidan Corry landed 0-6 of their tally, four points coming from frees.

Shannon Gaels recorded their second draw in this year’s intermediate championship campaign when they shared the spoils with Éire Óg on Sunday afternoon.

At the end of an evenly fought first half the Ennis side led by the minimum margin with the score at 0-4 to 0-3.

Dara Crehan struck for the game’s only goal early in the second half and this helped the Gaels to a one goal lead, 1-5 to 0-5. Éire Óg hit back and kicked three unanswered points to level the tie and from here to the finish it was very evenly matched.

Three times the Gaels went ahead but on each occasion Éire Óg responded to level and they tied up the game for the final time shortly before the full time whistle when Shane Daniels was on target from a mark.

Shannon Gaels were strong in defence where Tomas Cleary and Micheal Lorrigan did well while inter county man Darragh Bohannon did well at midfield.

Clooney-Quin have only added to their pack with the Ronaldo-like return of Peter Duggan but the greater need might just drive Éire Óg over the line on this occasion.

A similar high noon showdown will take place the following day in Ennis as Newmarket-on-Fergus and Feakle look to build on positive opening results.

Indeed, their seasons have been a series of highs so far as the Blues hold a perfect six match competitive record in league and championship whereas Feakle secured a first Clare Cup crown since 1988 to bolster their belief for an even greater prize this summer.

Delight for U15 Lissycasey and Kilmaley dual players

THERE were celebrations on the double for six dual stars after Lissycasey and Kilmaley garnered county Under 15 silverware within the space of 80 hours.

On Saturday, Lissycasey exacted full revenge on St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield for their U15 Division 1 Final defeat by cementing the Féile Division 1 Football honours by 1-6 to 0-7 in Clareabbey while on Tuesday, Kilmaley surged to the Under 15B Hurling Championship title by means of a comprehensive 4-15 to 1-10 victory over Clooney-Quin in Cusack Park.

Daire Culligan fired 1-3 on both occasions while Diarmuid McMahon, Aidan Weaver, Ryan Courtney, Aaron Clohessy and goalkeeper Josh Daniels were also central to the back-to-back success.

Indeed, Culligan’s early goal helped Lissycasey settle into their stride, with his further three point haul allied to singles through Diarmuid McMahon and Ben Skerritt aiding their passage to a 1-5 to 0-3 interval advantage over the Parish.

The roles would be completely reversed on the resumption as Doora/Barefield’s excellent defence kept their opponents to a solitary point but in truth, never made their strong backlash count on the scoreboard. Top-scorer Oige Fanning, Padraic O’Donovan (2) and substitute Caoimhin Enright did lower the arrears to just two but Lissycasey held on this time around.

Kilmaley, despite playing with only 14 players for the last 45 minutes, still had enough to overcome Clooney-Quin in the Under 15B Hurling decider. A Jamie

Healy hat-trick of goals allied to scoring contributions from Culligan (1-3), Joseph Casey (0-4), and substitute James Murphy (0-3) ensured that, following successive final defeats at U13B and 14B levels, Kilmaley’s relentless drive finally paid dividends.

Healy’s ninth minute goal was finally reeled in by a Jerry O’Connor inspired Clooney-Quin by the 18th minute and helped by their numerical advantage, the sides were still level entering injury-time before substitute Murphy handed Kilmaley a minimum 1-6 to 0-8 half-time lead.

With the conditions now in their favour, Kilmaley soared to new heights, with goals from Healy (2) and Culligan helping them to outscore Clooney-Quin by 3-9 to 1-2 in the second period that included a 2-4 unanswered final quarter.

Timely goals through Conor Perrill, Charlie Doherty and substitute Oscar Reynolds were instrumental in Éire Óg’s Féile Division 2 Football success over St Joseph’s Miltown by 3-5 to 1-5 in Gurteen on Saturday morning.

Perrill and Doherty’s strikes helped the Townies to establish a 2-2 to 0-4 interval lead before replacement Reynolds put the result beyond doubt despite the best efforts of Eoin Devanney who along with scoring three points for Miltown also teed up Caimin Jones for a late consolation goal.

Goals were also pivotal in an even tighter Féile Division 3 Football decider in Cooraclare on Friday evening as a major in each half for Julian Linnane edged Shannon Gaels/Kilmihil over the line by 2-6 to 1-6 against a Nathan O’Shea-led Doonbeg.

OTH Avenue Utd and Newmarket Celtic made it back to back wins in the Maloney Garden Machinery Premier Division while Ennis Town FC got their campaign back on track with an impressive victory over Bridge Utd as Shannon Town Utd started their season with a late injury time winner from Gary O’Connell.

Gary O’Connell was the hero as Shannon Town A opened their Maloney Garden Machinery Premier Division campaign with a victory over Lifford on Sunday morning.

With the game in injury time and everything pointing to a draw, O’Connell rose highest to head home a Colin Scanlan delivery in the third minute of added time.

“It didn’t look like there was going to be a goal but thankfully it came.

We kept at it and the goal came in the end. Lifford will feel hard done. It was a very close game, end to end stuff but I felt we just did enough to win it. We had a few chances that we didn’t take,” Shannon Town manager Derek Byrne said.

He added, “It was a good game, nice football played. Lifford are a good footballing side. Fitness showed and we looked to be the team pressing at the end. It’s a huge start because if you fall behind Newmarket you won’t catch them.

Lifford manager Anton Mannering admitted to being “disappointed to lose in injury time but I can’t be disappointed in the performance.

We have three or four centre backs injured and we had two or three guys starting today who aren’t 100 per cent fit. To hold a team like Shannon Town, one of the better

teams in the league, for a full 90 minutes and threaten a few times ourselves, I can’t say I’m disappointed in the guys”.

Defences dominated for the most part and both goalkeepers produced some good saves in a tie which was 38 minutes old before the first corner was awarded and this went to the home side who had two corners in the opening half.

The home side enjoyed more possession in the second half and they forced three corners in as many minutes as the third quarter drew to a close. The day belonged to Shannon Town and while the Ennis outfit will be disappointed not to have taken something from the game, they will be pleased that the team’s performance was much improved from the previous week.

Eliaz Kunz scored a hat trick as Avenue United proved too strong for Shannon Olymic at Roslevan on Sunday morning in what was his

first start for the club after signing from Ennis Town FC. The opening goal came after 10 minutes when Kunz headed home after a great cross from Stephen Jordan. He struck again 10 minutes later when he applied the finish after good work by Mark Roche.

Olympic pulled one back through Declan McDonald but the winners restored their two goal lead when Stephen Jordan headed to the net following a Mark Roche cross. The winners stretched their advantage to three goals, 4-1, just before half time when Roche converted from the penalty spot.

Ten minutes into the second half Avenue introduced Cian O’Dea and within two minutes of his introduction he had found the net when he blasted to the roof after great work by Jordan.

On Monday he was announced as the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive player of the week. He followed this up on Tuesday when the NAIA named him the National Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

A goalkeeper with Tennessee Wesleyan, Michael impressed in what was his debut for the college side as they recorded an upset with a 1-0 win over Dalton State, a game in which he registered four saves in a row during his freshman debut.

The former St Breckans keeper - son of Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) was in fine form when they had a 1-1 draw against Cumberlands pulling off three saves in what was a double-overtime tie.

In March of this year, Michael signed with Galway Utd’s first team after impressing at U19 level for the club. Prior to this, he represented both Burren Utd and Avenue Utd as well as standing between the posts for Limerick FC. Meanwhile, Ennis’ Barry Cotter has signed with reigning League of Ireland champions, Shamrock Rovers, after his spell with Ipswich Town came to an end in March of this year.

In what was a UK transfer deadline day signing, Shamrock Rovers announced that the Clare native had put pen to paper on a deal with the club and needs to have his international clearance in order to line out in Friday’s encounter against Finn Harps.

Barry made his Ireland U19 debut in 2017 coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 loss to Norway at La Manga. He began his senior career at Limerick FC making 11 appearances during the first half of the 2017 Premier Division season. Prior to this, he represented both Ennis Town FC and Avenue Utd.

Two goals in each half gave the visitors a merited win on a day when the experienced Paddy

Purcell opened the scoring with a powerful header from the back post after twenty minutes. They doubled their advantage before half time through David McCarthy who converted from the penalty spot for the second week in a row.

Mountshannon came close to pulling one back in that opening period but William Glass’ effort struck the post and flew wide.

NEWMARKET-on-Fergus jockey Dylan Hogan recorded back to back wins on Moliwood with the latest success coming on Saturday.

Coincidentally, Moliwood is trained at Newmarket in England by Marco Botti.

Hogan (far right) rode out his claim on Moliwood by cruising past his sole rival to take the Watch Race Replays at racingtv.com Handicap to register back to back victories.

Speaking following his latest win, Dylan stated he was keen to “keep kicking” with his rising racing career while also paying tribute to the people of Clare for their continued support.

Erril is a Star for Newmarket owner ALLEGRA Blue continued her rich form on the track while there was success for the Newmarket-on-Fergus owned Erril Star on Saturday evening.

The opening contest on Saturday’s Galway Card was an A7 graded 525 yards contest in which Erril Star was away smartly in the centre of the track and racing towards the opening bend she led from Peteles Lord and Cuilbeg Big Bird. Turning down the back the Frank Casey of Newmarket on Fergus owned Erril Star kicked on and at the halfway mark the daughter of Toolatetosell & Snow Eva led Cuilbeg Big Bird and Springwell Stevo by over three lengths. When the chasing pair bumped slightly at the third bend Erril Star was finally on her way to her maiden success at the 19th attempt by two lengths from Springwell Stevo in 29.63.

On the run towards the opening bend in race six for this A5 graded contested the blue jacketed Lillies Joy showed pace along the inner to lead her rivals headed by Breaghmore Ava by over a length rounding the opening bend.

Racing down then back Breaghmore Ava moved up to challenge Lillies Joy but the Stephen Murray trained leader responded well to lead by a length approaching the home bend. Railing well the Michael Corry and Michael Daly of Clarecastle owned daughter of Ballymac Vic & Brookeville Dash stayed on well to defeat Breaghmore Ava by two & a half lengths in 29.54.

In the A4 graded finale Ballaghboy Panda showed pace on the run towards the opening bend to lead from Brickhill Layla and Bumblebee Lana as they swept round the opening bend. Racing down the back Ballaghboy Panda(Lenson Panda-Sues Music) continued to show the way as Bumblebee Lana moved up on his inside to virtually join issue leaving the back straight. Approaching the home bend Brickhill Layla and Kilcormack Molly also began to close on the leaders but off the home bend the Jerry Maloney and Patrick O’Driscoll of Doora owned Ballaghboy Panda really stuck his neck out to see off the challenges of Brickhill Layla and Kilcormack Molly by a neck and a head in 29.27.

The opening contest of the night at the College Road venue on Friday night was an A6 graded contest and from traps all six runners came away on terms as they raced towards the opening bend. Menmal Prince, trained by Galway’s Martin Fahy and owned by Michael Casey of Mullagh showed pace on the wide outside to outpace his rivals and lead by two lengths rounding the opening bend. Clear turning for home Macho Man raced clear to defeat Millrose Danny by four and a half lengths in 19.39.

In race four, the John Browne of Ballyea owned Rathmeehan Stud was another winner to register a career best effort as the son of Newhall Missile and Notimetotalk routed his rivals by upwards of seven and a half lengths in 28.97. Very smartly into stride the winner led Scooby Flash and Creevy Pearl on the run towards the opening bend rounding which the winner tracked well and led by two lengths entering the back straight. Leaving the back the winner was out in splendid isolation as Creevy Pearl came through late to claim the second spot.

The Sean Conlon owned Bumblebee Dylan was another winner to make all the running in race seven, the Stephen Murray of Sixmilebridge trained son of Droopys Jet & Gunner Maisie proved two and a half lengths too good for Millrose Minnie in 19.08 to record his fifth career success The opening round heats of the 2021 SIS Cambridgeshire Open 750 took centre stage on Sunday night at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. Heat three of the night was landed in trap-to-line fashion by the Marion Moroney of Ennis owned Allegra Blue as she justified her 7/4 favouritism with a fine maiden performance over the trip.

Allegra Blue is in a rich vein of form at present and after winning on her last two starts at Galway, where she dipped under 30-seconds for the 550-yard trip, the extra yardage at Limerick proved irrelevant as she made it three wins on the trot in a time of 41.87.

Looney wins President Prize again in Lahinch

by SEAMUS HAYES EUGENE Gilligan’s President’s prize which was played over two contrasting but challenging days, weatherwise, recently was won by Pascal Looney (14) with 40 points.

Pascal achieved a very rare feat as eleven years earlier (2010) he won Eugene’s Captain’s prize at Lahinch.

Evelyn Lyons and Marie O Connor represented Lahinch in the Munster Region Qualifiers of the Granard Cup at Castletroy yesterday returning a score of 41points to finish in second place. Evelyn and Marie have qualified for the All-Ireland finals which will be hosted by Balbriggan on October 1.

WOODSTOCK GOLF CLUB: Lady captain Fiona Landy’s prize was played for at Woodstock at the weekend when Mary Sweeney (43) returned a score of 64 nett.

Eleanor Miniter (46) was second with 68 nett followed by Chaye Kelly (22) with 70 nett and Niamh O’Regan (13) with 73. Fran Feighery (23) won the past lady captain’s prize while the nines were won by Mags Nash (45) with 34 ad Eilis Neville (35) with 35.

Niamh O’Regan won the long drive at the third hole and Mags Nash was the winner at the fifth hole.
