President Michael D. Higgins has urged the people of Clare to make the most of their lives while being praised for creating life-lasting memories as he honoured the Ennis volunteers. Inspired by the work of volunteers with Samaritans and Ennis Tidy Towns during his visit to the county over the weekend, President Higgins was struck the coming together of people from different ages and backgrounds working towards a common goal. “It is great to see the inter-generational quality to it and also the heritage. People working together of all ages across this, that is a great base for the thinking and the kind of shift we all want, it isn’t all heavy there is a joy in it all, God we’re only around once we should be able to enjoy it,” he told The Clare Echo. Addressing President Higgins and his wife Sabina from St Flannan’s College on Saturday, Chairman of Ennis Tidy Towns, Cormac McCarthy commented, “you have created memories that will last a lifetime and for that we are eternally grateful”. HANNON Airport has been given a golden opportunity to capitalise on Dublin Airport’s inability to carry out its primary function of facilitating flights. Terminal buildings inside and outside Dublin Airport were thronged with queues on Sunday as over 1,000 passengers missed their flights. The scenes were likened to the fall of Saigon by Clare TD, Michael McNamara (IND). Ennis travel advisor, Gearoid Mannion told The Clare Echo, “It’s a poor reflection
on the organisation at Dublin Airport to be honest, there’s no doubt it’s an opportunity for us to capitalise for Shannon”. He added, “We have to grow the hinterland for Shannon, this is a great opportunity to do it. Dublin are shooting themselves in the foot, their misfortune is our opportunity”. TD Cathal Crowe (FF) said the solution to Dublin’s ongoing problems lies with airports like Shannon. “Pre-Covid Dublin airport enjoyed a 86% dominance in terms of all inbound and outbound flights - the only other national airport to exceed this was Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. In that context, the Dutch government saw fit to devise a brand new aviation policy to cap the number of flights landing and taking off from Schiphol Airport”.
