United States Navy Giving Back to Our Communities While composing this edition of The Clairemont Times, specifically the library page, I was struck at the positive impact The United States Navy is having in our community.

A series of workshops are being offered this month by the Navy’s Fleet and Family Support Program (FFSP) at the Clairemont Branch Library.

Two career oriented programs/workshops this month are quite timely given the number of people unemployed or having career uncertainty. The first is a “Resume Writing Workshop” on Tuesday, March 6th.

The second, in true military follow-up fashion is the next day Wednesday, March 7th “Winning Interview Techniques Workshop.” These are two phenomenal resources to learn some tips and obtain career advice.

There are also three other workshops/programs geared towards family

and parenting this month at the Clairemont branch provided by FFSP. The beauty of the above events is that attendees do not have to be affiliated with the Navy to benefit from such programs and workshops.

career counseling the North Clairemont branch will be hosting a free Job Seeker Boot Camp Friday, March 23rd.

We as a community are very fortunate to have such diverse programs at our local libraries the staff and many volunteers who take the time to give back should be commended for their hard work, dedication and service. For more information about what our local libraries have to offer see page 6.

PLENTY OF BASEBALL TO GO AROUND For all the baseball fans out there if you are looking for a fun time basking under the sun why not check out the local baseball action which is just getting underway.

Whether it is the little league, high school or college levels there are plenty of opportunities to get your baseball fix right here in our own neighborhoods.

Mesa College One of the Fastest Growing Community Colleges San Diego Mesa College was recognized as one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the nation by Community College Week magazine. Of the nation’s 1,050 two-year institutions, the magazine’s overall ranking puts Mesa College seventh in the nation for colleges enrolling at least 10,000 students.

With a 13 percent increase in enrollment, Mesa College also ranked the highest growth in numbers in the state of California.

The results were reported in the annual “Special Report: Fastest Growing Community Colleges” released November 28, 2011. The article named the top 50 fastest-growing public twoyear colleges in four categories ranging from “fewer than 2,500 students” to “10,000 or more students” based on data collected between fall 2009 and fall 2010.

“This distinction comes at a critical time and in spite of the fact that in the last several years, we have had to turn away students, reduce classes and increase fees,” noted Dr. Pamela T. Luster, president. “It underscores the dedication of our faculty and staff to meet the education and workforce training needs of the San Diego region.”

San Diego Mesa College and Miramar College were two of only four California community colleges to place in the top 50 with enrollments of 10,000 or more.

San Diego Miramar College ranked 41 in the CCW report, with an eight percent increase, in the same category. Mesa and Miramar were two of only four California community colleges to place in the top 50 with enrollments of 10,000 or more.

The demand for classes at Mesa, Miramar and City College is at an alltime high, even as the colleges and the entire the California Community College system face severe and continuing budget cuts. All three colleges are part of the San Diego Community College District, which also includes San Diego Continuing Education.

Community College Week published its findings in the November, 2011 issue.

It based its research on U.S. Department of Education data, which only include analysis of students enrolled in courses that lead to a post-secondary degree or other formal award. The publication ranks the colleges in order of percentage change in student count. The report can be found at www.ccweek.com.

Opinions Spring (Training) is in the Air! Hello Clairemont Faithful! Thanks again for picking up your monthly edition of The Clairemont Times; we truly value you and all of our readers out there on the mesa. With the Chargers’ season behind us and no professional basketball or hockey team to watch we can finally turn our full attention to the Padres’ Spring Training Camp.

As we sit through the weekly rainy day and low to mid 60 degree weather we can take comfort in knowing that all 30 Major League Baseball teams have taken the field and gone through their first full squad workouts with actual Spring Training games starting in the next couple of weeks. Personally, I cannot be more excited. This is my favorite time of year. Every single team is tied for 1st place and everyone is offering up their projections of how the season will go. The beauty of baseball is that the season is long and looking good or bad on paper really does not hold up over a 162 game season.

- Regardless of how the season goes, and it could be a long season at that, there is a lot of young talent floating around the Padres at every level of their major roster and minor league system.

We all could be in for quite a treat if you give these guys a chance. There are always going to be some growing pains with young players but watching them develop and reach their potential can be extremely exciting. The Padres have positioned themselves to win over the next couple of seasons (not necessarily this season mind you) by building a strong core of young prospects that can

play together and will be under team control through 2015. Players to watch early on in Spring Training include: 1B Yonder Alonso, RHP Casey Kelly, and 3B Jedd Gyorko.

Only a month and half to go before Petco Park will be hosting our hometown Padres!!! Make sure you catch a game this season, I know I will.

I can’t tell you how the Padres are going to fair this season because it’s just a guess like everyone else’s but I can tell you what the baseball world is saying about them. The only thing is...I don’t want to. Instead let’s just point out some fun optimistic facts about this upcoming season: - The National League West Division is up for grabs this year and the Padres can immerse themselves in it even with the loss of players such as starting pitcher Mat Latos and closer Heath Bell.

- The Giants, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Rockies were all completely predicted wrong at the start of last season, so it could happen again this season with the Padres reaping the benefits of little media coverage compared to the rest of the division.

- Adrian Gonzalez and the Red Sox most likely are not going to win, sorry Adrian.

- The Padres brought in some fine talent to replace those players most notably outfielder Carlos Quentin, closer Huston Street, starting pitcher Edinson Volquez, and hard hitting unproven 1st base prospect Yonder Alonso.

District 6 News/Events Moving Our Schools Forward in 2012 From the Office of Councilmember Lorie Zapf Use Caution in Our Canyons The network of canyons in Clairemont is something that makes our community unique. Some of them, like Tecolote Canyon and San Clemente Canyon are well-known and have great hiking and biking trails for the public to enjoy. Many of our homes overlook the expansive network of canyons that run through Clairemont.

My family and I frequently enjoy our local canyons. The Tecolote Canyon and Natural Park, for example, has 6.5 miles of trails that can be used for jogging, walking, and mountain biking. I encourage everyone who hasn’t yet had the opportunity, to spend some time visiting our local open spaces.

I would suggest, though, that everyone who enjoys spending time in our canyons use caution and be aware of their surroundings. Recently, my office became aware of a small fire that had started in one of the canyons near Clairemont Mesa Blvd. and Clairemont Drive. An investigation found that the cause of the fire was a meth lab in one of the homeless camps in the canyon.

This camp was located just yards away

from a residential neighborhood full of single family homes.

The City has an ongoing program aimed at cleaning up these camps that are located in canyons throughout San Diego. Through a partnership with the San Diego Police Department, Environmental Services, Neighborhood Code Compliance, and nonprofits like Alpha Project, City staff are able to go in and clean up these hazards in our communities. This team effort cleans up one to two homeless camps per month throughout the City. At the meth camp I mentioned earlier, the cleanup hauled away nearly three tons of litter and trash, and SDPD made multiple arrests including finding individuals who had outstanding warrants.

As you are out enjoying San Diego’s canyons and open space, be aware of your surroundings. If you see suspicious behavior, please call the San Diego Police Department’s non-emergency number at (619) 531-2000 or (858) 484-3154. Let’s keep our canyons clean and safe for everyone to enjoy!

Clairemont schools continue to perform very well and are an enhancement to our neighborhood.

Clairemont schools were well represented at the All Schools Fair at Balboa Park last month. Thursday, March 8 is the dedication of the Clairemont High Automotive Facility that will prepare our students for jobs leading into the future.

The budget crisis in the state of California will have a big effect on the operational budget of our schools next year. We have already eliminated millions in central administration and outside contracts to keep most of the money in the schools. We have also reduced transportation funding to keep more money in the classrooms.

After reviewing every department last fall, it became very clear that we cannot keep cutting staff.

The district is already functioning with a skeleton crew in many cases. We have 2,000 fewer employees than just a few years ago.

But we have a $124 million dollar shortfall due to reduced funds from the state. The Board cannot vote that shortfall away. The November ballot initiative for taxes will come too late to help us for next school year. We have two choices: increase class size and cut academic programs and student support services (resulting in over 1,000 layoffs) or have concessions from employees. The school police officers’ union

has already agreed to the concessions, so now there will be no need for layoffs in that department and our kids will be safe.

The Board of Education and the Superintendent have also agreed to the same package of concessions. I have faith that our other employee groups will do the right thing. We really need to return next year with the same level of staffing and programs.

We need to make it clear to our state legislators that we cannot continue to provide quality education without adequate funding. As parents, community members, teachers and staff we need to work together to protect the education of all children in Clairemont and throughout San Diego.

Tecolote Canyon Clean-Up • Saturday, March 17 Volunteers and business sponsors are needed for Canyon, the annual spring clean-up of Tecolote Canyon led by San Diego Mesa College. This year’s clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, March 17.

Canyon Day is a collaborative town and gown effort that has grown from several dozen volunteers in 2008 to more than 200 in 2011. Community partners include

the Tecolote Canyon Nature Center and Citizens Advisory Committee, the Linda Vista Town Counsel, and the San Diego American Indian Health Center.

Organizers aim to break last year’s record of removing a dozen shopping carts and several tons of trash, recyclables, and non-native plants.

Volunteers receive free Canyon Day tee-shirts, certificates of participation, and enjoy canyon talks by Mesa College faculty and Tecolote Canyon expert Eloise Battle. The clean-up will be led

by Park Ranger Janice Lavallee.

Mesa College biology and geology professors will also be on hand to give canyon talks.

High school students will receive community service credits. Interested persons should show up at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 17 at the head of the Tecolote Canyon Trail near the corner of Genesee and Marlesta streets in Clairemont. THE CLAIREMONT ART GUILD ART Demonstration – On March 17 th the Clairemont Art Guild will welcome Guest Artist Vicky Delong. She will demonstrate how to make ceramic wall pockets using a hand built slab technique. Guests and new members are welcome to attend the free monthly meetings on the third Saturday of each month from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The group meets in the Recreation Building behind the Holy Cross Lutheran Church located at 3450 Clairemont Drive. Monthly meetings usually include information about community events of interest, helpful critiques of member’s artwork and works in progress, as well as lecture demonstrations by guest artists. Music, Animals & Emotions SILVERWOOD MUSIC ENSEMBLE The Clairemont Library will offer a free concert by Renaissance group SilverWood on Wednesday, March 28th at 6:30 pm. SilverWood draws its strength from its members’ diverse backgrounds, playing a variety of musical styles, including classical, popular, Celtic, jazz, and other international styles. The group performs throughout southern California. At the Los Angeles Museum of Art they played as part of a Russian-Jewish music presentation for the exhibition of the works of Mark Chagal. In May of 1998, SilverWood was featured as the Irish band providing entertainment preceding a performance of “Riverdance” in the San Diego Civic Theatre. The following June they presented Scottish music for the Scottish Highland Games festival in Vista.

The band performed with the San Diego Repertory Theatre in their 1997-1999 productions of “A Christmas Carol.” SilverWood has given live TV performances on KUSI, KFMB, and NBC; and they have appeared live on KFMB radio. Their music has also been aired on KPBS radio. This program is appropriate for adults, and no sign-up is required.

TALES FOR TAILS The Clairemont Library will host a free interactive animal program with the San Diego Humane Society’s PetAssisted Therapy Program on March 24th at 1:00 pm. This monthly program helps children improve their reading skills by reading to animals in a fun and relaxing environment. The animals may include guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, and sometimes dogs and cats. This program will occur on the 4th Saturday of every month at 1:00 p.m. This program is appropriate for grades 1-6, and no sign-up is required.

The San Diego Humane Society has been bringing the joys of animals to people for more than 30 years through its Pet-Assisted Therapy (PAT) Program. Volunteers bring resident rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and sometimes adoptable puppies and kittens to visit people who aren’t able to experience the joys of pet ownership.

Many volunteers have taken their dogs through a special class called Canine Good Citizen and their dogs have passed the Canine Good Citizen test. These dogs and people provide an extra dimension of happiness to the

residents who look forward to seeing them each month.

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP The Clairemont Library will offer a free Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) workshop with Michelle Leuschen on March 23rd from 12:001:00 pm. Based on the premise that unresolved emotions can compromise our potential for happiness, EFT began as an effective remedy for phobias, addictions and war trauma.

Vietnam Vets were finally able to sleep at night, smokers could choose fresh air, and paralyzing phobias lost their grip...all without medication!

Before long, EFT was providing relief for migraine headaches, sexual abuse trauma, and a wide assortment of everyday ailments. Fascinated by the results, founder Gary Craig taught the technique to therapists, clients and people on the street. He said “Try it on everything!”, so they did. Since then, EFT has grown into a revolutionary healing aid, used by traditional therapists, medical professionals and alternative healers on everything from weight loss to disease. The discovery behind this technique is that most physical and emotional issues are caused by disruptions in the body’s “subtle energies”. These disruptions inhibit our natural ability to heal, thus resulting in emotional symptoms, chronic pain and illness. Combining this emotional element with the ancient principles of acupuncture, EFT has been able to address the causes of these energy disruptions with a gentle tapping procedure (using the fingertips). Impressive results ensue because the process addresses causes (disruptions in the energy system) instead of symptoms. EFT has been known to work where nothing else has and often delivers rapid, gentle and permanent relief from unwanted emotional and physical symptoms.

Michelle Leuschen has been a Counselor for nine years in private practice. She has taught over 50 private workshops and created a 12 part webinar series designed to help people learn EFT at home. She frequently speaks at bookstores, mental health centers, spas, wellness centers, yoga studios, and women’s networking organizations.
