Resident opens school to inspire learning

By SIBYLLA CHIPAZIWA Assistant Editor When Yvette Rosario-Pérez learned that both of her daughters grew disinterested in their education, she knew it was time to do something.

Enter Inspire Academy Middle School, a non-traditional, individualized approach learning center that Rosario-Pérez is planning to open in September.

Rosario-Pérez, 42, is the founder and director of the school and a New Rochelle resident who has been teaching in the school district for approximately 13 years, quitting earlier this year to focus on Inspire full time. The new school is her way of giving back to the community. “Every kid deserves the opportunity to feel deeply connected to learning,” she said.

Coming from the world of business, she wanted a career change, and started as a bilingual teaching assistant at Trinity Elementary School in the early 2000s. “The minute I set foot into class from Day 1, I knew that was what I wanted to do,” Rosario-Pérez said.

“I just fell in love.”

Living in Cortlandt Manor at the time her eldest daughter was entering ninth grade, Rosario-Pérez was

frustrated with the school district’s handling of her child’s growing disinterest; she was an AP student on the honor roll who was suddenly failing.

To seek help, Rosario-Pérez even tried to speak to the Cortlandt Manor schools superintendent, but he refused to see her. “He literally said, ‘Someone else will handle this,’” she said.

“I felt so disconnected, nobody would help me,” she added. “Here I was, a parent begging for somebody to do something, and nobody did anything; they didn’t want to help.”

Rosario-Pérez’s daughter barely graduated high school, and even begged her parents if she could drop out. That experience led Rosario-Pérez to research non-traditional approaches to education.

“So many students go through this; the traditional school experience does not work for them,” she said. “It was devastating, and it still is. [My eldest daughter] thinks school is useless.”

She continued to teach, and her youngest daughter, who has a rare, chronic disease, was performing well in preschool—until she entered kindergarten. Then, just like her older sister, she, too, started to dread school.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God, here we are again,’” Rosario-Pérez said. “It was a different situation, because [my daughter] was doing well, but she was bored.”

The mother took this as a sign to finally act, starting around two years ago. She visited some schools that take the non-traditional approach, including the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, as part of her due diligence.

Rosario-Pérez had to complete a 21-item checklist through the New York State Education Department, which includes providing the agency with a description of the curriculum, a budget, and a records policy, to open the school. The hardest task to complete was finding a physical location. The whole process of finalizing the idea of Inspire, a nonprofit, to filing paperwork, took around nine months.

Inspire’s current location is temporary; the middle school is renting out space for a year at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, located at 10 Mill Road in New Rochelle.

Inspire Academy is a private, project-based learning school, where students take what they learn to connect to real-world experiences.

Rye Brook passes first gun store law in county

By COREY STOCKTON Staff Writer Six months after a controversially located gun store opened in the town/village of Harrison, the village of Rye Brook has passed a law that restricts how and where a gun store can operate within its municipal borders, becoming the first in Westchester County.

On Tuesday, May 23, the village Board of Trustees decided by a 4-1 vote that gun stores in Rye Brook should be kept outside of a 500-foot radius of so-called “sensitive areas,” such as schools, nursery centers, playgrounds and religious centers.

“It’s certainly appropriate that the village look at our zoning to make sure potential gun shops are located in appropriate locations in the community,” said Chris Bradbury, Rye Brook’s village administrator, following the adoption of the law.

The aim to restrict gun stores from those sensitive areas comes as a reaction to the opening of a gun shop in Harrison, where residents became concerned over the shop’s proximity to an elementary school.

Although there aren’t any gun stores currently located in Rye Brook, the village said it adopted the new law as a proactive measure to have in place in case of a similar situation arises like the one that has garnered significant attention in neighboring Harrison.

The law also regulates some practices of a potential gun store, including storage, reporting, inspection, and who can be allowed into the premises. It specifies that no guns

can be displayed in a shop’s windows, and must instead be kept behind a counter; when the store is closed, those weapons must be kept in a fireproof vault. The law also makes it illegal for an owner to admit anyone on the premises who is legally unable to purchase a firearm, including minors and convicted felons. The legislation also gives the Rye Brook Police Department the authority to inspect any gun store every six months.

Rye Brook worked with the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a California-based nonprofit organization, in drafting the now adopted law. According to Laura Cutilletta, the legal director for the law center, the center has worked with nine separate communities in New York state to propose local gun ordinances.

The Westchester County Firearms Owners Association, a Rye Brook-based community organization, could not be reached for comment as of press time.

and might pitch it to the community, eventually creating an event and preparing a press release all on their own.

“I felt that this kind of learning is appropriate for the middle school level,” Rosario-Pérez said, explaining why the school only teaches grades six through eight. “This age group is where I can make the biggest impact.”

She is currently hiring faculty for Inspire, while accepting applications for the September enrollment.

The school also plans to focus on personalized instruction, with students working through some of the curriculum at their own pace. The goal is to provide children with life skills for whatever they end up doing in life, including knowing how to communicate and work with oth-

The aim is to enroll 30 students for the first year, with up to 110 students enrolled by the school’s third year. “Keeping [the school] small is the only way we could be committed and consistent to growing and nurturing meaningful connections between faculty and students,” Rosario-Pérez said.

Park Passports There’s a new way to access some of New Rochelle’s most popular parks this season.

The Department of Parks and Recreation has replaced Omnicards with Park Passports for parking entry into waterfront parks, including Hudson Park, Five Islands Park, Davenport Park and Neptune Park.

Park Passports can be obtained at the Parks and Recreation Office at 515 North Ave. Photo proof of identification must be shown, as well as two permanent documents or items that confirm name or address (driver’s license, vehicle registration, utility bill, lease, tax statement, or rent receipt).

Senior resident Omnicard passes will continue to be honored.

Passport fees are: adult resident (ages 14-61) – $40; senior resident (ages 62 and up) valid for five years – $40; non-resident – $80.

Reporters discuss fake news, media’s future

By TAYLOR BROWN General Assignment Reporter With the current national political climate placing the press under tremendous scrutiny, five reporters dedicated their evening to giving media consumers a look into the work journalists are doing, and discussing the positive outlook they see for the future of the press.

This discussion included how news stories are frequently labeled as false when they paint someone in a bad light, the effect that President Donald Trump has had on the media.

The paneled, labeled “Fake News, the First Amendment and Democracy,” was held on Wednesday, May 17 at the Rye Community Synagogue.

We Persist, a liberal organization founded by women in Rye and Rye Brook shortly after the Women’s March in January 2017, hosted the event, and recorded the event’s attendance at 350 people.

Andi Hessekiel, co-chair of the Freedom of the Press/First Amendment Action Team, which is one of the teams that make up We Persist, explained that the organization’s goal is to advocate for democracy. “[We Persist was] talking about what can we do about what seemed

to be an effort by the new president of the United States to develop distrust in the press and in some cases keep the press out of public events,” Hessekiel told the Review following the event.

The evening’s panelists included Heather Cabot, a previous ABC News correspondent and anchorwoman; Taegan Goddard, who founded PoliticalWire.com; Chris Vlasto, an executive producer at “Good Morning America”; Diana Williams, a reporter and anchor for ABC7 “Eyewitness News”; and Andrea Canning, a correspondent at Dateline NBC. They were led in the discussion by Lee Woodruff, who is a contributing reporter for “CBS This Morning.”

During the conversation on “fake news” Woodruff pointed out that prior to the current presidency, the term “fake news” was mostly reserved for websites like AbcNews. com.co and Cnn.com.de that create their own false news stories to spark a reaction from readers.

But today, when one uses the term “fake news,” it is normally associated with attacks by Republican politicians on reporters.

This can be seen by President Trump’s use of Twitter, where he frequently calls out publications and journalists that he believes are

painting him in a bad light through random, oftentimes early morning tweets.

Trump, not surprisingly, turned out to be the primary focus of the discussion.

But for one local resident, that was the reason why she had wanted to attend.

“I was really interested in hearing what journalists had to say about Trump threatening the press, and calling respected news outlets fake news,” said Heather Stone, of Larchmont.

Williams tried to explain the unprecedented difficulties as a journalist trying to cover this presidency, referring to Trump as a different kind of president.

Williams said that because Trump is active “24/7,” especially on social media, news outlets need resources that are able to cover his activity, and reporters are being forced to adapt to this type of constant coverage.

“It’s not that we aren’t doing the job [of reporting,] I think we’re doing the job as best as we can,” Williams said. “But it’s a different job now.”

Hessekiel, who called the event an overall success, explained that part of the importance of the event was so that the public could get a

behind-the-scenes look at some of the issues that journalists now face.

The panelists were eventually asked to discuss what they thought the future of journalism would look like and whether freedom of the press is under attack by the Trump administration.

Vlasto said, “I think we’re more vibrant now than ever.”

Vlasto added that when journalists are attacked by politicians, they should wear it as a badge of honor, and not be afraid of backlash.

Canning shared a similar senti-

ment, saying that she wasn’t worried about the future of the press.

She explained that under the new administration, reporters’ jobs might be more difficult, but they shouldn’t let this stop them from doing it.

“That is why we put together this evening—to remind people that though the current president may be attacking the press, the press is crucial to holding politicians accountable for their actions,” Hessekiel said.

By ANDREW DAPOLITE Contributor Dudley’s Parkview Restaurant and Bar in New Rochelle became a temporary barber shop on April 21, as more than 25 people shaved their heads in support of the fight against childhood cancer.

The event was sponsored by the New Rochelle firefighters and Police Association of New Rochelle, in partnership with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a non-profit organization that holds more than 1,000 head shaving events throughout the country each year.

According to their website, funds collected by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation are used to provide research grants towards “the most promising cures for childhood cancer.”

More than $12,000 was raised through this year’s local initiative, in part due to the generosity of numerous local businesses including V.I.P. Country Club, Sound Bound Fishing Charters, Texas Roadhouse and TP Toys and Accessories.

Benjamin Diemoz, the 10-year-old nephew of Peter Escobedo, a city firefighter, raised more than $2,500 and celebrated with a fresh head shave.

While the event did not draw attention to any specific children battling cancer, according to John Schroeder, a New Rochelle firefighter and event organizer, there are numerous families within the community currently confronting the challenge.

honors fallen heroes The American Bombshells, a nationally known patriotic harmony group, perform patriotic songs and “oldies.”

By ANDREW DAPOLITE Contributor A weekend of patriotic activities geared toward honoring those who died in active military service began at two New Rochelle cemeteries on Sunday, May 28, as nearly 3,000 flags were placed at tombstones belonging to local veterans.

The volunteer effort was held at Beechwoods and Holy Sepulchre cemeteries, and was led by Peter Parente, the president of the United Veterans Memorial & Patriotic Association of New Rochelle, UVMPA. Parente also serves as com-

mander of the local VFW Post, and is a veteran of the Marine Corps who spent eight years in active duty during Operation Desert Storm.

For Parente, the process of laying flags at the gravesites of New Rochelle’s veterans is what he calls “the most emotional part of the weekend.”

“It’s a way for us to give respect to those that served and remember those that are no longer with us,” Parente said. “We had a huge turnout this year with a lot of kids helping out, which was very nice to see.”

Local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, along with their parents, were on hand to assist in the flag placements, which proved to be a tedious process as there is no map or accounting system indicating where former service members are buried. Volunteers walked each row of both cemeteries searching for grave makers and medallions on the tombstones. Some stones are inscribed with the veteran’s branch of service, while others are labeled with their American Legion or VFW post.

On Memorial Day, an entire itinerary of events was planned by the UVMPA, beginning with the New Rochelle Police Department escorting a bus full of service members from New York City to New Rochelle’s American Legion Hall for a private early morning breakfast prior to a public ceremony at Memorial Plaza.

After the ceremony, a day of activities was held at Glen Island Park, beginning with a water service coordinated by the New Rochelle Police Department Harbor Unit.

water, paying homage to all those lost at sea, as the sound of taps and a gun salute could be heard from the mainland.

Following the service, Dennis “Dion” Nardone, a local radio DJ, stepped in as the event’s emcee and DJ, also introducing musical performances from the American Bombshells, a harmony group who sings patriotic songs and “oldies,” as well as Undercover and Third Stone, two New Rochelle-based bands.

A highlight of the event was when four Marine Corps helicopters landed in Glen Island Park as part of a live demonstration, allowing children and families to board the choppers for a tour. Children spent time interacting with the crew, as marines also brought along static display weaponry and taught onlookers how to handle some of their military equipment.

There was also special recognition given to 18 New Rochelle residents currently serving through-

out the different branches of the U.S. military, stationed all over the world.

Large canvas prints of each active service member lined the stage with a yellow ribbon attached. Parente took a moment to recognize each individual, explaining who they are, where they are stationed, and what their job is.

Many of their mothers and fathers were in attendance and volunteered in the VIP area, serving food to the marines who were visiting.

The event which drew an estimated 3,500 people by day’s end despite the inclement weather.

The architecture firm Keller/Eaton Architects, led by Robert Keller and Dianne Eaton, has received an award for Best Historical Restoration from Westchester Home Magazine. The magazine’s annual Home Design Awards was held at the Performing Arts Center at SUNY Purchase College and hosted by celebrity designer Vincent Wolfe.

Keller/Eaton’s winning project was in the category of Historical Restoration for two homes in Larchmont Manor, one of them pictured above. The firm was also finalists in Whole Home Architecture for a project in Rye, Best Master Suite for a project in Larchmont, and a finalist in the prestigious Readers’ Choice Awards.

Westchester Medical Center unveils new main concourse

Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, WMCHealth, recently unveiled a new, contemporary main concourse to greet patients and visitors to the region’s advanced care medical center in Vahalla.

The new main concourse, now an important extension of the hospital’s care-giving environment, is a functional crossroads that will eventually connect Westchester Medical Center and the future 280,000-squarefoot Ambulatory Care Pavilion currently under construction on WMCHealth’s Valhalla campus. The 8-story Ambulatory Care Pavilion, the largest healthcare construction project in Westchester County since the construction of Westchester Medical Center’s main tower in 1977, is slated for completion in 2018.

The main concourse more than doubles the size of Westchester Medical Center’s former main lobby, offering a beautiful, soothing environment for community members who visit the hospital.

The 13,200-square-foot concourse, replete with stainless steel accents, tri-colored terrazzo floors, carefully curated art, energy-efficient lighting, and coordinated colors and textures, welcomes guest through the front doors of Westchester Medical Center.

Warming lamps and an outdoor waterfall wall greet visitors as they drive up to the valet station.

With the new main concourse came the addition of a new boutique-style gift shop, a fully renovated Au Bon Pain bakery and café, and a 1,800-square-foot Caregiver Center.

The private, dedicated Caregiver Center provides a retreat for family members to access advocacy services, and emotional and spiritual support through Westchester Medical Center’s Caregiver Program while their loved ones receive care at the hospital. The center offers amenities like computers, showers, wireless and mobile device charging stations, and information on local resources. Refreshments and other amenities like yoga and reiki therapy are also offered.

As the region’s advanced care medical center and Level I trauma center, approximately 50 percent of patients and visitors who arrive at the hospital on any given day do so in an emergency situation. Kitchen cooking up success

Barnes & Noble Kitchen serves three types of salads, including chicken Caesar, kale and chopped vegetable.

Barnes & Noble’s outdoor dining area opened in late April, providing customers the opportunity to enjoy the weather along with their meal.

everal months into the opening of Barnes & Noble Kitchen, the bookstore’s rebranding, the Eastchester location has already built up a loyal customer base.

Included in the 22,000-squarefoot bookstore, the third of its kind, is a 2,600-square-foot kitchen. The new store provides one convenient location for shoppers to enjoy a new book along with their breakfast, lunch or dinner.

“The reception [for the kitchen] has been exceptional,” said Amy Gautreau, community relations business development manager for Barnes & Noble. “Once [customers have] tried it, they come

back again and again.”

The latest Barnes & Noble Kitchen launched in November 2016 in the Vernon Hills Shopping Center.

The bookstore’s sit-down restaurant serves breakfast until noon, and lunch, dinner and dessert all day.

On the menu are dishes including lemon-ricotta pancakes, chicken Caesar salad and brick-cooked chicken.

There are also gluten free options like the guacamole without chips, hummus and plancha-cooked salmon.

The restaurant also offers the “Kids’ Kitchen” menu with entrees and drinks available for children.

The menu was put together by Sheamus Feeley, executive chef consultant and operating partner at The Bransetter Group, a hospitality consulting business that has partnered with Barnes & Noble. Feeley has worked in the restaurant business for more than 20 years.

Along with food, the restaurant also serves 23 types of wine, champagne, and six types of draft beer. Each Barnes Take your pick from three types of desserts, & Noble Kitchens’ beer including freshly baked cookies.

On Thursday night, the Cavaliers and Warriors took the court for Game 1 of the NBA Finals, marking the third time in as many years that the two teams have squared off with the Larry O’Brien trophy on the line. But while I’d ordinarily welcome another chapter of a burgeoning high-stakes rivalry, I—and a lot of other fans—can’t help but be underwhelmed by the upcoming series.

The fault here, however, doesn’t lie with the two teams—which come into the finals with an overabundance of star power—as much as it does with the NBA product in general.

I mean, let’s face it. The fact that the 2017 finals would be a “three-match” was pretty much preordained the moment that LeBron James hoisted up the NBA Finals trophy after last year’s series.

The Cavs and Warriors simply had way more talent than the rest of the teams in their respective conferences—and that’s even before

Golden State added a top-5 player in Kevin Durant.

Now, I don’t blame the Warriors or Cavaliers for going out and creating these “super teams.” Operating within the rules put in place by the NBA, it’s incumbent upon teams to go out and put together the best rosters they can (The Knicks, apparently, didn’t get that memo).

But even though I’m sure that the league is happy to see a finals series containing six of the best 20 players in the NBA right now, that concentration of talent ultimately weakens the league and makes the road to a championship about as uncompelling as it has ever been.

Super teams are nothing new of course.

The Celtics and “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s, Jordan’s Bulls of the 1990s; these weren’t oneman shows. There were plenty of Hall of Famers on those rosters.

But what most of those teams had, at least, was some competition within the conference.

The Celtics had to tangle with the “Bad Boys” Pistons; the Lakers—at least in the later half of the 1980s—faced some stiff tests from

the Stockton-Malone Jazz and the Dallas Mavericks. The Bulls, despite their dominance, still had to get through the same physical Pistons teams and a Knicks squad that always seemed to play them tough.

This year, the Cavs and Warriors combined to lose one game in the postseason, and it was one in which Cleveland seemingly lost interest in beating the Celtics after jumping out to a huge, early lead.

That sort of dominance doesn’t just affect the postseason though.

The Cavs were so confident, so unconcerned with establishing homecourt advantage in the playoffs, they rested their stars often and essentially quit playing during the last month of the regular season, handing Boston the top overall seed.

Sure, it worked out for them on the court, but in terms of building up any sort of momentum among NBA fans who don’t live in Cleveland or San Francisco, the last six months have been an absolute snooze-fest.

After all, when the biggest storyline of the regular season is which superstar not named LeBron is going to win the MVP, it’s hard to generate any sort of momentum.
