ホバート市は焼津市との友好関係を40年 間継続してきたことを非常に誇りに思い ます。

Growing from mutual fishing interests 40 years ago, our relationship has flourished to include cultural, educational and business links that unite our different cultures.

40年前のお互いの漁業への関心から、私 たちの関係は、文化、教育、ビジネスを含 めたお互いの異なる文化を結合する繋が りへと発展しました。

Our relationship is truly special and connects our two cities in many ways, but it is the people’s connectivity that keeps it alive. These connections not only help Hobart and Yaizu to strengthen international links, but also bring increased experience, knowledge and skills back to the communities. The community committees in each of our cities have been the driving force in the relationship, organising many activities and initiatives. An activity at the heart of our sister city relationship is the highly successful student exchange program, which has seen hundreds of students and families benefit over many years.

The City of Hobart very much looks forward to the 40 year commemorative activities in Hobart and Yaizu in 2017.

両都市の関係は真に特別であり、二つの 町を様々な形で繋いでいますが、 これを活 発なものにしているのは人々のつながり です。 これらのつながりはホバートと焼津 の国際的な連携を強めるだけでなく、 より 多くの経験、知識、技術を市民へ還元する ものです。両市のコミュニティー委員会は 多くの活動を生み出し、運営して、 この関 係を推進してきました。私たちの姉妹都市 関係の中心的な活動は学生交流プログラ ムで、数百人の生徒たちやその家族が長 年に亘ってその恩恵を受けました。 ホバート市は2017年の姉妹都市提携40 周年の記念行事を心から楽しみにしてい ます。

I’d like to thank everyone, including the friendship associations of both cities, for their contributions and enthusiasm.

Our exchange has been broad, with cultural, educational and sports activities that have involved the young and the old and deepened our friendship.

When we look at our past records, it is so touching to see the smiling faces of all the people in the photos. I trust our relationship will be filled with happiness and make our hearts grow richly.

Background and history 歴史と背景 The relationship with Yaizu began in the 1960s when its fishing fleets were harboured in Hobart and it was formalised in 1977.

The agreement is the 6th oldest Japan– Australia sister city relationship.

The then Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Doug Plaister, visited Yaizu in the mid 1970s and began the process of establishing a sister city relationship. He also met a local woman, Fumiko, who would later become his wife.

There have been a number of official visits between the two cities to commemorate the 25th, 30th and 35th anniversaries of the Hobart–Yaizu relationship.

The sister city relationship has given Tasmanian families the opportunity to experience another culture and it has promoted the state in Japan.

Hundreds of students have benefited from the sister city student exchange program over the past 28 years.

Historically high school exchanges occurred with Taroona High School, Ogilvie High School, New Town High School and Guilford Young College.

For the last few years however, these visits have involved St Mary’s College, St Virgil’s College and Mount Carmel College.

ホバート・焼津の姉妹都市関係25周年、30 周年、35周年を記念しての公式訪問が、両 市の間で行われました。 姉妹都市関係はタスマニアの家族たちに 異文化を体験する機会を与え、 またタス マニア州を日本に広める役割を果たしま した。

A community support committee was established in 2001 to further develop the relationship. The committee includes representatives from the Australia Japan Society and interested local people. The committee meets bi-monthly and supports a variety of educational and cultural activities and exchanges with local schools.

焼津市との関係は1960年代、焼津市から の漁船団がホバートに入港したことに始 まり、1977年に公式な関係を結びました。 これはオーストラリアと日本との間の姉妹 都市関係で6番目に古い提携となります。 当時のホバート市長ダグ・プレイスター氏 は1970年代半ばに焼津を訪れ、姉妹都市 関係を結ぶ手続きを始められました。 ま た、後に夫人となられる、焼津市の市民、

Mrs Fumiko Plaister 芙美子プレイスター In the 1970s, Japanese tuna boats came to fish for southern bluefin tuna in Australian waters under an international fishing agreement with the Australian Government. Yaizu’s Mayor Hattori hoped to capitalise on some of the positive relationships established with the ports used by the fishing fleet from Yaizu, so he sent letters out to the mayors of those port cities. The first to officially take up the offer was Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Doug Plaister. After exchanges and negotiations between the two cities, the Hobart–Yaizu Sister City Agreement was formalised in 1977.

After marrying Doug Plaister in 1982, I immediately started doing my little bit to further the relationship with Yaizu alongside the Lord Mayor. After his passing in 1993, I felt obligated to respect his wishes and carry on his work, and thus continued to actively work to further this positive relationship with Japan. As I reflect over the years, I have fond memories of visits by the Sekiyama Ballet and Yurikamome Choir, the annual student exchanges with Hobart schools, and formal intercity visits. Then, of course, there were the numerous student groups dancing Minato Gunbu in the annual Hobart Christmas Pageant, supported by the power, energy and dancing skills of Takame Ueki and her students from the University of Tasmania.

Of these many events, a key highlight was the visit of the Japanese Hachoro samurai wooden boat to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in 2011. The sea brought Yaizu and Hobart together and the sea continues to bind us.

I feel very privileged to have contributed to international peace and understanding through the Hobart–Yaizu sister city relationship. I feel confident that with a strong reservoir of support and goodwill, the positive relationship with Yaizu will continue beyond the next 40 years.

1970年代に日本のマグロ漁船が南マグロ を求めて、 オーストラリア政府との国際漁 業協定に基づいてオーストラリアの海に やってきました。 。当時の服部市長は焼津 からの漁船団が利用する港との良い関係 を設立したいと願い、いくつものオースト ラリアの港町の市長さんたちに手紙を出 しました。 この申し出を最初に公式に受け 入れたのがホバートのダグ・プレイスター 市長でした。二つの市の間で意見の交換 や交渉が行われた結果、1977年にホバー ト−焼津の姉妹都市協定が公式に結ばれ たのです。 1982年にダグ・プレイスターと結婚した私 は、彼と共に焼津市との関係をより深める ために私にできることは少しでもと活動を 始めました。1993年に彼が亡くなった後は 彼の願いを叶えることが私の使命だと感 じ、亡き夫の仕事を引き継いで日本との友 好関係をより深めるべく努めています。昔 を振り返ると関山バレエ団やゆりかもめ合 唱団らによる訪問や、毎年のホバートの学 校との学生交流、他州への公式訪問など、 楽しい思い出がたくさんあります。毎年の クリスマス・ページェントに参加し、植木孝 女さんのパワーと踊りのスキルとタスマニ ア大学の学生さんたちの支援によって 「港 群舞」 を披露したのもその一つです。 これ らのたくさんのイベントの中でのハイライ トは、2011年にホバートで開かれたオース トラリア木造船祭りに焼津の八丁櫓が参加 したことです。海は焼津とホバートを結び、 私たちをつなぎ続けています。 私はホバート−焼津姉妹都市関係を通し て、国際平和と理解に貢献できたことを光 栄に思います。強い支持と友好の蓄積によ って、焼津とのポジティブな関係が次の40 年を超えて続くことを確信しています。

Mr Tokuichi Nishikawa Yaizu-Hobart Friendship Association President 西川徳市 焼津−ホバート友好協会会長 The Yaizu–Hobart Friendship Association was established in 1977 as a proof of friendship when deep-sea tuna fishing boats from Yaizu called on many Australian ports. The President of the Yaizu Fishery Cooperative always played the role of the President of the Friendship Association since the inaugural president, Mr Sazaemon Takiguchi. Following this tradition, I became the Fifth President at the same time when I became the Fishery Cooperative President in the year 2000.

I’m so pleased that the sister city relationship between Yaizu and Hobart is now celebrating its 40 year anniversary. It reminded me of the broad and beautiful port of Hobart, where the fishing boats from Yaizu used to visit. In recent years the student exchange program has been at the centre of friendship activities, and I’m very pleased that our relationship has now passed on to the younger generations. While looking back on the past, I sincerely hope the friendship between our two cities will grow further into the future.

焼津・ホバート友好協会は、焼津の遠洋マ グロ漁船がオーストラリア各港へ寄港し た縁から、その友好の証として1977年に 設立されました。当協会の会長職には初 代の滝口佐左ヱ門氏から歴代、焼津漁業 協同組合の組合長が就任してまいりまし た。私も同漁協の組合長に就任した2000 年から５代目会長として活動しておりま す。 このほど焼津市とホバート市の姉妹都 市提携が40周年を迎え、喜びもひとしおで す。かつて焼津の漁船がホバートの広く美 しい港に寄港していたことが懐かしく思い 起こされます。近年は学生交流が友好活 動の中心となっており、若い世代にこの友 好関係が受け継がれていくことを大変嬉し く思います。過去の古き良き時代に思いを はせつつ、今後も両市の友好関係が益々 発展していくことを願ってやみません。

Teachers Di Irons and Shelley Macleod St Mary’s College Hobart ダイ・アイアン、 シェリー・マクラウド セント・メアリーズ・カレッジ教師 ‘It is important that we build strong, positive relationships [between] young, diverse populations. Why? Because they are the future leaders and citizens of the global community … We must continue to find ways to create, sustain, and strengthen our connections.’

Fumiko Sensei has worked tirelessly to ‘sustain’ the relationship in conjunction with the Yaizu and Hobart city councils, all of which have undoubtedly ‘strengthened’ the connections between our two cities. We are convinced that everyone who has been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to experience such close and meaningful interactions between our two peoples, through this relationship, will attest to the fact that the experience ‘changed their minds’ and enhanced their lives. We are extremely grateful to everyone involved.

Yaizu student Natsumi Ooishi 大石なつみ 焼津からの交換学生 Congratulations on the 40th anniversary of the Yaizu–Hobart sister city relationship.

I visited Hobart as a member of the student exchange in 2016. By participating in this program I’ve gained so many things to ‘understand only by visiting Hobart’, particularly, I was impressed by the warmth of the people of Hobart. When I was confused at the activities at school someone helped me straight away. I was so relieved by their help that my uncertain feelings went away. I had made up my mind to be as positive as possible in Hobart, and tried to talk to my host sister, Elizabeth Rutherford, and her family to communicate with them as much as possible. By doing this I’ve gained another family in a place where the language and culture is so different.

This experience was offerred to me because of the 40 year ties between the two sister cities. Thank you very much for the precious experience. 焼津市・ホバート市姉妹都市提携４０周 年おめでとうございます。 私はこの夏、学生派遣でホバート市を訪問 しました。 この事業に参加し 「ホバート市 に行ったからこそわかるもの」を沢山得る 事ができました。中でも一番感じたのは、 ホバート市の人の温かさです。学校のグル ープ活動で困っていたらすぐに声をかけ てくれました。私は声をかけてもらい大分 不安な気持ちがなくなりました。 またホバ ート市では積極的でいようとホストシスタ ー、エリザベス・ラザフォードさんやその家 族にも声をかけ、なるべく自分から進んで コミュニケーションをとるように心がけま した。そのため言葉も文化も違う地にかけ がえのないもう一つの家族ができました。 この体験は姉妹都市である両市の４０年 間の絆のおかげだと思います。貴重な経 験をありがとうございます。

The Hon Elise Archer MP Speaker of the House of Assembly Liberal Member for Denison Former Alderman, City of Hobart 2007–10 エリース・アーチャー タスマニア州議会議長 デニソン選区自由党 議員 前ホバート市議会議員 2007年〜2010年 One of the best things about our sister city relationship with Yaizu is the student exchange program fostering strong bonds and creating a close cultural exchange between our young people. 焼津市との姉妹都市関係による最も素晴らしいことの一つは、学 生交流プログラムです。若い人々の間に強い絆を育み、緊密な文 化の交流を生み出します。

Student Stella Barnhoorn St Mary’s College ステラ・バーンホーン セント・メアリーズ・カレッジ生徒 My experience in Yaizu is from the St Mary’s College 2015 Japan trip. In Yaizu, I had a homestay with my host sister Yuri, and her family.

I simply loved my time in Yaizu, and the wonderful memories I made with my host family.

It was a very difficult farewell for me, and I still get a little teary thinking about how much I miss my host family and the wonderful time I had in Yaizu. I’ll never forget it!

My favourite memories of Yaizu are from spending time with my host family—as well as having donuts for breakfast every day!

It wasn’t only the big exciting cultural experiences, but also the little memories I cherish, like doing origami with my little host sister Eri. I often read the letter my host sister Yuri wrote for me when I left. She wrote: ‘I can’t forget you forever’. And I know I will never forget her, or my time in Yaizu either.

私の焼津での経験はセント・メアリーズ・カレッジの21015年の旅 行での体験です。焼津では私のホストシスター、ユリのお家にホー ムスティしました。 焼津で過ごした日々を楽しみ、ホスト・ファミリーとの素敵な思い 出を作りました。 お別れがとっても辛くて、今でもホスト・ファミリーが懐かしく、焼 津で過ごした素晴らしい日々のことを思うと涙ぐんでしまいます。 絶対に忘れません！ ホスト・ファミリーと一緒に過ごしたことと、毎日朝ごはんにドーナ ツを食べたことが焼津での好きな思い出です。 大きな文化的な体験だけでなく、小さな思い出、例えばホストシス ターの妹エリと折り紙を折ったことなども私にはとても大切です。

Teaching in Yaizu was an incredibly special experience for me, and two wonderful years of my life. I like to think that at least some of the students remember me as well, and that I played a small part in piquing or increasing their interest in English. I can’t even imagine the number of people whose lives must have been touched by the Hobart–Yaizu sister city relationship over the years. May the relationship long continue, and in doing so, continue facilitating the sharing of knowledge, experiences and inter-cultural understanding.

Toyoda Junior High School student 豊田中学校生徒 Days passed and we came to say goodbye. On the night before I left I read a thank you message to my host family.

Tears came to my eyes before I started, and before I finished Siobhan and her mother were in tears. My host dad said ‘Thank you for coming to our home!’ We shed more tears of happiness and then hugged each other. I was so happy that everyone in the family thought so well of me. What I learned from this trip is that it doesn’t matter if it’s a different country or if the language is insufficient, people’s hearts can bridge the gap. History and culture come after. I would like to visit Hobart again someday.

日々が過ぎて、サヨナラを言う時が来た。出発の前の晩、ホストフ ァミリーに感謝の言葉を読み上げた。始める前にもう私の目には 涙が溢れてきて、読み終わる前にシボーンとお母さんは泣いてい た。ホストダッドは「うちに来てくれてありがとう」 と言った。私たち は幸せの涙を流しあって、お互いにハグした。ホストファミリーの 皆が私のことをこんなによく思ってくれて嬉しかった。 この旅行で 学んだことは、国が違っても、あるいは言葉が十分でなくても、人 々の心がそのギャップを埋めてくれる、 ということ。歴史や文化は その後で。ホバートにまた行きたい。 学校の印象： 学校でおやつの時間があること。 生徒達がフレンドリーなこと。 たくさんの友達ができた。

Kogawa Junior High School student 小川中学校生徒 For my host sister making lunches and helping make dinner are both normal.

My host mother made no distinction and expected me to pitch in. It meant that I was accepted as part of the family I was ecstatic.

Things that surprised me: • Even though it was winter, they were in shorts and short sleeves • Larger quantities of food and drink than in Japan • Rock climbing and church • Unbelievably large grounds • Lots of steep hills • Big house • Not using a hair dryer after a shower School impressions: • Very free atmosphere • Sweeties at school • Buying lunch

Yaizu Senior High School student 焼津高等学校生徒 It felt free, different to Japan. There were different colour schemes throughout the school and students were allowed to have pierced ears. The tables and chairs were charming and appeared to be for more than just study.

The only problem was that everything seemed a bit high for us. The doorknob was about up to my neck and hard to turn.

Things that impressed me and were enjoyable: • Meeting native animals at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary • The stars were beautiful School impressions: • School overall felt freer than in Japan

日本と違って、 自由に感じた。学校中が異 なる色分けを使っている。ピアスが許され ている。机や椅子は魅力あるもので、ただ 勉強するためだけではないようだった。た だ一つ問題は全てが私達には少し高すぎ るようだ。 ドアのノブが私の首の辺りの高 さで、回しにくかった。 感激したこと、楽しかったこと： ボノロング野生動物保護園で、野生動 物に会えたこと 星が綺麗だった 学校の印象： 全体的に日本の学校より自由に感じた 皆フレンドリーだった

Wada Junior High school teacher 和田中学校教師 On the final night I asked the students if they had been able to converse with their host families. They replied ‘even though I didn’t understand the English, I think the message got across with gestures and pointing and saying YES and NO words, and if I looked like I didn’t understand they would come back with simpler words’. So, through the homestay experience, I feel that the students grasped the importance of communication as a fundamental requirement. Through my participation, I came to appreciate the depth of the Hobart– Yaizu relationship. I think the Yaizu citizens should be proud of the efforts made by so many people over such a long time in support of this connection. I am immensely grateful to the Yaizu Hobart Friendship Association for giving me this opportunity.

Yaizu Village Event Australian Wooden Boat Festival February 2011 オーストラリア木造船祭りでの焼津ビレッジ 2011年2月 The Hobart–Yaizu Sister City Committee, under the auspices of the City of Hobart, and in association with the Australian Wooden Boat Festival committee, featured a traditional Hacchoro Japanese sailing boat and created a ‘Japanese village’ at the 2011 Australian Wooden Boat Festival.

The driver of the project on the Hobart side was the doyen of Japanese culture and a champion of Yaizu, Mrs Fumiko Plaister. She was inspired to create the Japanese village concept to showcase the relationship with Yaizu and the maritime links of the two cities.

The traditional Japanese Hacchoro boat was a featured vessel in the festival and was a major drawcard, being the first of its kind ever to visit Australia. Bringing the Hacchoro boat to Hobart was no small feat and required many hours of hard work by staff and volunteers. Not only was it a spectacular sight, but it also gave festival goers who boarded the ship a rare first-hand experience of Japanese boat building craftsmanship and sailing tradition. The Japanese village itself provided a snapshot of Japanese culture, including dance, music, tea ceremony, kimono display, Ikebana (flower arrangement), origami, judo and Japanese cuisine (featuring famous Tasmanian soba producer and chef, Rick Shiratori, as well as local Geeveston sushi chef, Masaaki). The presenters within the village were mainly the dedicated citizens of Yaizu, who travelled to Tasmania at their own cost to share their time and expertise. They toiled tirelessly during the days of the festival to provide an authentic taste of Japanese cultural arts and food.

ホバート−焼津姉妹都市委員会はホバート市とオーストラリア木 造船祭り委員会との共同の後援で、2011年のオーストラリア木造 船祭りに、伝統的な日本の八丁櫓を中心とした「日本村」を作り出 しました。 このプロジェクトのホバート側の中心人物は日本文化の第一人 者で、焼津のチャンピオンである芙美子プレイスターさんです。焼 津との関係と両市を結んだ海事上の繋がりを展示するという構 想で「日本村」を創ろうと発案しました。 伝統的な和船「八丁櫓」はオーストラリアにお目見えした初めて のタイプの船であり、木造船祭りの特別な呼び物でした。八丁櫓 をホバートに運ぶについては容易な業ではなく、 スタッフやボラ ンティアの長時間にわたる困難な作業を要したのです。壮観な見 栄えだけでなく、乗船した見物客達に和船建造の技と航海術を目 の当たりにするというごく稀な体験を提供しました。 「日本村」 で は踊りや音楽、茶道、着物の展示、生け花、折り紙、柔道、 日本食（ 著名なタスマニアそば製造者であり料理人でもあるリック白鳥氏 やジーブストンの寿司職人マサアキさんらが出場）など、 日本文 化を披露しました。 「村」の中では、 自費でタスマニアまで旅をして この期間を共にし、 また専門分野の指導のために参加された焼 津の熱心な市民達が主に活躍し、 日本の文化や食べ物を提供し て、祭りの期間中毎日休みなく働かれました。 これは木造船祭りとホバート市にとって、一生に一度のイベント でした。ホバートと焼津の両市からのボランティアの人々の間に は多くの永続する友情が築かれ、 これらの人々の暖かさと好意に よる協力で、 このユニークなイベントが生み出されたのです。

This was a once-in-a-lifetime event for the Wooden Boat Festival and City of Hobart. Many lasting friendships were forged among volunteers from both Hobart and Yaizu who collaborated with warmth and goodwill to create the unique event.

Hobart Myer Christmas Pageant 2013 ホバート・マイヤー・クリスマス・ページェント In November 2013 the Mayor of Yaizu, Mr Hiromichi Nakano, visited Hobart and attended the Myer Hobart Christmas Pageant.

The Hobart–Yaizu Sister City Committee and local schools participated in the pageant carrying a custom built omikoshi (portable shrine).

The omikoshi was built in two handson construction workshops involving students from Tarremah Steiner School and St Mary’s College in Hobart. The project helped students gain new skills

working with a community artist on an arts project.

The young people enjoyed their experience, which enhanced their knowledge on Japanese culture in a fun, active and educational way.

2013年11月中野弘道焼津市長がホバート を訪れ、ホバート・マイヤー・クリスマス・ ページェントを視察されました。 ホバート−焼津姉妹都市委員会と地元の 学校がページェントに参加し、特別に作ら れたお神輿を担ぎました。

お神輿はホバートのタラマー・シュタイナ ー・スクールとセント・メアリーズ・カレッジ の生徒達が参加した二回のワークショップ で作られたものです。 このプロジェクトは 生徒達にコミュニティー・アーティストと一 緒に作業をするというアート・プロジェクト の新しいスキルを得る機会を与えました。 生徒達はその体験を楽しみ、 日本文化へ の知識を楽しい活動をしながら、 より多く 学びました。

Australian Yaizu resident Tricia de Jersey トリシア・デ ジャージ − ホバート出身で焼津の住民 ‘I am home for a week,’ I tell my friend when visiting family near Hobart. ‘I’m coming home next week,’ I say to my mother-in-law in Yaizu.

After 18 years living in and around Yaizu I truly feel like both cities are my home.

I was born and raised near Hobart but have spent almost my entire adulthood in Yaizu.

Before coming to Yaizu I had studied some Japanese at the University of Tasmania. I was curious about Hobart’s sister city, Yaizu, and when the opportunity arose to come here, I wanted to make the most of it. Since then I have been a language teacher in Yaizu schools, interviewed Yaizu students for the annual homestay trip to Hobart, attended sister–city functions and local festivals, and many other cultural exchanges which have cemented my strong feeling of belonging to both cities.

My husband and children were born in Yaizu and in 2003 I opened Bonorong, my English school, where I now continuously promote the relationship between Yaizu and Hobart, including taking my Japanese students to Hobart during holidays.

Who knows? Maybe, in the future, they, too will hear, ‘Welcome home!’ and ‘Okaerinasai’ when they go … home.

焼津に来る前にタスマニア大学で日本語 を学びました。ホバートの姉妹都市、焼津 に興味を持って、 ここに来るチャンスがで きたとき、最大限に活用したいと思いまし た。焼津の学校の語学教師となり、毎年ホ バートへのホームスティの旅に行く生徒た ちの面接をし、姉妹都市関連の催しや近 所のお祭り、その他の文化交流に参加し て、私が両都市の一員であるという気持ち を固めています。

Yaizu teacher Joanna Matsunaga ジョアンナ松永 ホバート出身の焼津の教師 This year marks the 40 year relationship between Yaizu and Hobart. That’s a big number and a long time. One year is nothing in comparison and was how long I had planned on staying when I first came to Yaizu to teach English, improve my Japanese and experience the culture first hand.

Twenty-four is also quite a big number and the actual number of years I have ended up staying in Yaizu. One more year will make it 25, a significant number, as it will mean I have spent half my life in Hobart and half in Yaizu.

Another small number is three, and that’s the number of years my daughter has now been in Hobart, making it of course feel like a very much larger number.

The largest number, however, is the factor by which my life has been enriched through the relationship forged between my native and adopted cities.

The Hon Rob Valentine MLC Independent Member for Hobart Legislative Council Tasmanian Parliament ロブ・バレンタイン タスマニア州議会上院議員 I have wonderful memories of the friendships forged over many years of association with Yaizu during my 12.5 years as Lord Mayor of Hobart. They are true friendships that remain to this day. Yaizu’s Mayor Tomoto, Mr Nishikawa and Mr Ishida were very instrumental in maintaining our city’s solid relationship with Yaizu. Of course, I must not forget the many City of Hobart officers who gave magnificent support, and Hobart’s Mrs Fumiko Plaister, a former Lady Mayoress, who has always been a wonderful, driving force in welding the ‘sister’ cities together.

In 2002 I visited Mayor Tomoto in Yaizu and cut a cake in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship fireworks, along with a fireworks display at the Yaizu Ara Matsuri Festival. ホバート市長としての12年半の間に、長年にわたって築かれた友 情の素晴らしい思い出がたくさんあります。今日まで続くまことの 友情です。戸本焼津市長、西川さん、石田さんは、私たちの市が焼 津市と堅固な関係を維持する上で大きな貢献をされました。 もち ろん素晴らしいサポートをして来たホバート市役所の多くの職員 達や、常に「姉妹」都市を繋ぐ推進力となって来た前市長夫人の 芙美子プレイスターさんを忘れるわけにはいきません。 2002年には焼津市に戸本市長を訪問し、焼津荒祭りでの花火大 会と共に姉妹都市提携の25周年を祝うケーキをカットしました。

Australia Japan Society (Tasmania) 豪日協会タスマニア The Australia Japan Society (Tasmania) congratulates all people who were involved over the past 40 years in this unique relationship.

The AJS in Hobart, which was formed a year before, has been involved since its beginning. Our life member, Mr Robert Wedd, and his wife Bronwen, were founding members of the Hobart–Yaizu Friendship Association, then a support group for the sister city relationship.

In fact, the late Mr Doug Plaister, then Lord Mayor of Hobart, was president and the first AJS life member, which indicates how closely AJS was involved in the formation of this relationship between the two cities.

When the Hobart–Yaizu Sister City Committee was established by the City of Hobart in 2001, AJS committee members were invited to be involved, which has continued today.

Alongside the Yaizu citizens’ visits to Hobart, the AJS has always been associated and cooperated with the City of Hobart in the various activities in promoting this sister city relationship: e.g. Japanese cultural event in the Elizabeth Mall, Australian Wooden Boat Festival, participation in The Taste of Tasmania, etc.

The AJS is committed to support this significant relationship between Hobart and Yaizu as a part of its objectives.

St Mary’s College student Millie Mcleod ミリー・マクラウド セント・メアリーズ・カレッジ生徒 The sister city relationship between Hobart and Yaizu has, for me, propelled a deep love and excitement for travel, experiencing new cultures and learning foreign languages. This relationship has brought many smiles and happy memories to my home throughout my school life. I was lucky enough to participate in a reciprocal homestay in 2010, where I met my Japanese ‘sister’ on both ends of the planet through our respective high schools. In having stayed in each other’s homes, we have established a life-long friendship that deeply reflects the importance and values of the Yaizu–Hobart sister city relationship. 焼津とホバートの姉妹都市関係は、海外 旅行と新しい文化の体験、そして、外国語 学習への熱意と喜びを駆り立ててくれまし た。そしてこの関係は私の学生時代を通し て、私の家に多くの笑顔と楽しい思い出を 生み出してくれました。2010年に交換ホー ムスティに参加するという幸運に恵まれ、 私は日本の「姉妹」 と、お互いの学校を通し て地球の反対に位置する二つの土地で、 会うことができました。お互いの家庭で共 に過ごすことにより、一生続く友情を築くこ とができました。 これは、焼津市とホバート 市の姉妹都市関係の重要さと価値を深く 反映するものです。

Soroptimist International Hobart visits Soroptimist International Yaizu ホバート国際ソロプチミストの焼津国際ソロプチミストへ の訪問 Yaizu City, Japan and Hobart, Australia have a long history as sister cities, and Soroptimist International (SI) of Hobart has a long-established friendship link with SI Yaizu. This friendship was recently re-established, resulting in five SI Yaizu members visiting Hobart in August 2014 to coincide with SI Hobart’s launch of a Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture project. Tasmanian Aboriginal Elder, Auntie Patsy Cameron, guided SI Hobart and SI Yaizu members through Launceston’s Cataract Gorge and we were privileged to learn much about the Aboriginal history of the area.

In March 2016, five SI Hobart members visited Yaizu and were officially received by the Yaizu City Mayor, the Honorable Mr Hiromichi Nakano and his staff. SI Yaizu President and members spent valuable time with SI Hobart members who were gratefully treated to two full days of sight-seeing. This included the local fish market, museum honouring the history of the bonito fishing industry, viewing Mount Fuji from Shizuoka, climbing up (and down again) the 1159 steps at the Tushogu Mountain Shrine, and dining and entertainment.

日本の焼津市とオーストラリアのホバート は姉妹都市の長い歴史があり、ホバート の国際ソロプチミスト （SI） も焼津のSIと長 い友情の絆を築いて来ました。 この友情は 2014年8月に焼津SIの5人の会員がホバー トを訪れたことにより再び堅固なものとな りました。ホバートSIがタスマニアの原住 民の歴史と文化のプロジェクトを開始する のに合わせて訪れたものです。 タスマニア 原住民の長老、 アーンティ・パッツィ・キャ メロンさんが、ロンセストンのキャタラクト 渓谷を案内してくれ、 この地域の原住民の 歴史を学びました。2016年の3月にはホバ ートSIの5人の会員が焼津を訪れ、中野弘 道焼津市長と職員の方々を公式訪問しま した。焼津SIの渡辺ゆきこプレジデントを 始め、会員の方々がホバートの会員を2日 間の観光に連れて行ってくださいました。 魚市場、 カツオ漁業の歴史を語る博物館、 静岡からの富士山の眺め、東照宮の1159 段の階段を登り （そして降りて）、お食事や エンターテイメントを楽しみました。

City of Hobart Community Development Officer, Multicultural, Sjaan Field ホバート市コミュニティ開発部多文化担当 シャーン・フィールド Konnichiwa! Working with the Hobart Yaizu Sister City Committee and Yaizu City for the past four and a half years has been satisfying and enlightening.

Since being involved in the program, I have deepened my knowledge of Japanese culture. Our Yaizu sisters and brothers are kind, polite, courteous and very hospitable and such a pleasure to work with.

When Yaizu students arrive in Hobart they are mostly shy and quiet but after

seven days staying with their host families they become more confident and talkative. It is pleasing to see many close friendships made in such a short time.

I thoroughly enjoy working with many dedicated and enthusiastic people in Hobart and Yaizu. I trust the relationship will continue to strengthen and enrich lives as it has mine. こんにちは！ ホバート−焼津姉妹都市 委員会と焼津市と共に働いて来たこの4 年半は充実した、学ぶことの多いもので した。 このプログラムに関与するようになってか ら、私の日本の文化についての知識は深 くなりました。私たちの焼津の兄弟姉妹は 親切で、優しく、礼儀正しく、 とてもおもて なし上手で、一緒に働くことがとても楽し いのです。 焼津の生徒達がホバートに到着した時 は、大抵が恥ずかしがり屋で、静かです が、7日間ホストファミリーと過ごした後 は、 自信もついてよく喋ります。 このような 短い期間に親密な友情が生まれるのを見 るのはとても嬉しいことです。 ホバートと焼津の献身的で熱心な多くの 人々と共に働くのは本当に楽しいことで す。 この関係がより強くなり、私の場合がそ うであるように、人々をより豊かにするも のと信じています。

Peter Shelley Honorary Consul-General for Japan in Tasmania ピーター・シェリー タスマニア名誉総領事 It is indeed an honour to be asked by the City of Hobart to record some observations on the occasion of this very important anniversary.

Early in my time as Honorary ConsulGeneral for Japan in Tasmania, I was delighted to have the opportunity during a business trip to Japan to visit Yaizu. I was fortunate to be guided on this visit by Mrs Fumiko Plaister, who ensured that I visited all of the important aspects of Yaizu and the economy that creates this wonderful city. I was very impressed with Yaizu, its people, its industry, its government and its involvement with the sea.

Our two cities share many common aspects and our respective citizens should be grateful that some 40 plus years ago, our mutual leaders had the foresight to determine the future benefits that would arise through the formation of a formal relationship between these two cities by the sea.

It has been my pleasure to have witnessed many visits by different groups from Yaizu bringing with them such benefits as education exchange, arts, culture and theatre. May these exchanges continue for another 40 years for enabling the continuation of this extraordinary relationship.

Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens ロイヤル・タスマニア植物園

The Japanese garden was designed

by Kanjiro Harada, a landscape architect from Yaizu, Japan. The garden officially opened in 1987. It emphasises traditional Japanese garden elements of wood, stone and water.

The plants in the garden largely consist of species native to Japan and selected cultivars, with Japanese maples a feature, particularly in autumn. The waterway with its associated tea house, waterwheel and bridges, acts as a focal point for the central plantings.

It’s beautiful in every season, with cherry blossom in spring then irises and water lilies in summer. The stunning Japanese maples put on a dazzling display in autumn, followed by the winter tracery of their bare branches. There are numerous conifers of all shapes, sizes and colours plus a plethora of camellias and azaleas that have abundant flowers from June until September.

日本庭園は焼津からの造園師、原田寛二 郎氏によって設計されました。庭園は1987 年に公式に開園し、伝統的な日本庭園の 素材である、樹木と石と水を強調してい ます。 この庭園の植物は日本原産種と選ばれた 栽培種がほとんどを占め、特に秋のモミジ が呼び物となっています。水路とそれが巡 る茶室、水車、橋は中央部の植え込みへの 焦点をあてる 役割を果たしています。 春の桜から夏のあやめ、睡蓮、秋の見事な 紅葉から 、冬の裸の幹や枝が生み出す 模 様、 と季節ごとに美しい庭です。様々な形 や大きさ、色の針葉樹がたくさんあり、6月 から9月まで花をいっぱいにつける椿、ツ ツジもふんだんにあります。

Celebrating the 35 year anniversary 35周年記念 A number of activities celebrated the 35 year anniversary, including a tea ceremony and kimono dressing in Hobart and bag making at the Nijinoie social welfare facility in Yaizu.

35周年記念の際には茶道や着物の着付けなどの多くの活動がホ バートで行われ、焼津では福祉施設「虹の家」 でのバッグ制作現 場などを見学しました。

I would like to offer my congratulations to the citizens of Hobart and Yaizu on their 40th anniversary as sister cities.

このたび、オーストラリアタスマニア州ホ バート市と静岡県焼津市が姉妹都市提携 40周年を迎えられますことを、心からお祝 い申し上げます。

The Japan Local Government Centre (CLAIR) Sydney, as a local office for Japanese local governments, supports various international activities such as sister city exchanges and the Japan Exchange and Teaching program.

私たちは、 日本の地方自治体の共同組織 として、姉妹都市交流や外国青年招致事業 （JETプログラム）を通じて、地域の国際交 流を支援させていただいております。

The relationship between Hobart and Yaizu is the 6th oldest Japan–Australia sister city relationship. Many people in both cities have worked hard to build such a great model of cultural exchange with originality and ingenuity. I would like to express my respect and gratitude for their hard work.

As we live in a global community, I strongly believe that these exchange programs will play an important role in promoting mutual understanding and acceptance of each other’s differences.

I hope Hobart and Yaizu can continue to work together and further strengthen their friendship.
