Boy Scouts of America
Occoneechee Council Scouting And Those Who Make It Thrive by Joshua Henry
When you hear the word “boy scout you probably drum up visions of campfires, derby races, and badges. However, the concept of the Boy Scouts of America is so much more: it is a program that is helping young people build character, learn responsibility, and develop the skills to become productive members of the community!
Helping youths build character, learn responsibility, and develop the skills to become productive members of the community! The Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts of America serves roughly 20,000 youth and 7,000 adults within North Carolina. It is one of the largest Boy Scout councils 6

COMMUNITY
in North Carolina with ten districts in twelve counties, including Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Lee, Moore, Orange, Vance, Wake and Warren. One of the best aspects of being a scout is the concept of exploring. Exploring provides exciting activities and personal (one-on-one) mentorship for those young people looking to discover and plan their future. The purpose of exploring is to provide scouts with experiences that help them mature and prepare for becoming responsible and productive adults. It is based on a dynamic relationship between a youth and the organizations within their community. Organizations within the community will initiate an Explorer Post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of scouts within the community. This leads to a program filled with activities that aid in helping them pursue specific interests and grow. As with any program that aims in bettering the community and its members, the Boy Scouts of America relies on the help of partners and donors to really make a difference. Without the help provided from organizations like Blue Cross Blue Shield, Bank of America, Rex Hospital, Talk it Our NC, Alcohol Beverage Commission, faith based organizations, and Capital Broadcasting Inc., the BSA and the Occoneechee Council would not be able to make a difference in the lives of the youth and the community. One of the key values of being a boy scout is teamwork and it is great to know that the Boy Scouts instills this along with other real life values that are imperative to different facets of growth. Of course, you don’t have to be a part of an organization to lend a helping hand to the young people in your community. Throughout the community you will be seeing scouts and their leaders selling popcorn to help raise money. Not only do you get a delicious snack, but you also help better the lives of the kids and teens in your community and help prepare the world for future generations of responsible adults. Also, the BSA has begun a Camp Card promotion. This product provides people with cards that contain discounts for food, service, and entertainment services all throughout the year.

-- THE MANY FACES OF --
IDENTITY THEFT MORE THAN JUST YOUR CREDIT by Sheyenne Kreamer
I remember 10 years ago when I was first introduced to the concept of identity theft. Nobody even knew what it was, myself included, until two weeks after my initial training my personal checking account was hijacked by an identity thief! Ten years later, I continue to be surprised by how little the public really understands about the topic. Most think it’s strictly about your credit. But there’s a much bigger picture people need to know about. Criminal identity theft is a little-known problem that can really hinder a job search. This form of identity theft involves someone using your name and identifying information to commit a crime. As background checks become more common in the hiring process, identity theft can become a major stumbling block to getting hired. I have friends who were denied employment due to criminal identity theft. None of them knew about it beforehand, and, if they had not inquired to find out why they did not receive the job – they might not have known it then either. One friend spent 129 days in jail because of the criminal activities of an identity thief. It has taken her a decade to clear her name! Identity theft involving our healthcare records is the newest major threat. The COMMUNITY
9
2015 Study on Privacy and Security of Healthcare Data, conducted by the Ponemon Institute, found that 91% of the healthcare organizations they surveyed had between one and 5 data breaches in the last 2 years. Cases of medical identity theft reached 2.3 million in 2014. Medical identity theft happens when an imposter walks into a clinic or hospital using your name and identifying information. Your medical records can be altered with diseases you don’t have, and critical data such as your blood type can be changed. In a trauma situation, this incorrect data can become life threatening. How would you know if you were a victim of criminal or medical identity theft? Watch out for these: • Being denied employment or access to any activity that required a background check. Make sure you inquire as to the reason for the denial. • Being stopped by a police officer, and you’re not sure why. Be sure to ask. Unknown outstanding arrest warrants are a possibility! • Receiving an “explanation of benefits” notice from your insurance carrier, or a bill for a healthcare provider. If you haven’t had any healthcare procedures, investigate immediately! • HIPAA laws can deny you access to your own records once somebody else has their information in them! You may need assistance from an attorney. • An increase in health insurance premiums due to a condition you do not have! • A drop in your credit score for nonpayment of a doctor or hospital bill you know nothing about!

The Holidays HOW TO SAVE TIME ON A DIME by Ella Frazier
The Holidays can feel like it’s one of the busiest times of our lives with travel, work, family, friends, meals and gifts. Is there time to just sit back and relax? So, how do you keep your sanity and carve out some quality time for you? Preparedness is the key. One tip is to plan meals in advance by selecting pre-made meals, which are becoming more and more available through such chains as Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Kroger, etc. You can also prepare your own sides and select a Honey Baked ham or turkey. However most meals are not complete without dessert and some great places to pick up cakes and pies such as places like K&W Cafeteria and your major grocery chains, which provide cakes and pies that taste just like grandma makes. Are you working late hours and have no time to hit the mall or the many great local retail businesses in your area? No worries, you can shop online sites such as Amazon and WayFare, which makes shopping and shipping a breeze. However, the number of local businesses with websites you can order from is increasing each year. Remember back in the day when you would get an envelope with cash in it? Now, the modern day replacement for cash is gift cards. Gift cards can be purchased at so many retailers from HOLIDAYS
grocery to department stores. The key is to purchase gift cards directly from the vendor to avoid administrative fees. You do not have time to run into the store to purchase or you want to avoid the crowd? Gift cards can be purchased online from such vendors as Belk and Amazon. The e-gift card can be purchased from Starbucks and Best Buy. Run into stores like Ross, Walmart, JCPenny and HomeGoods to purchase gift cards with no fees. Websites such as giftcards.com and raise.com offers a variety of gift cards. Today’s technology is making it easier and easier to have quality time with family and friends or just a quiet time for one’s self if you prefer being proactive by being prepared.

Clothing Children with Dignity & Love by Joshua Henry
Note in the Pocket is a non-profit organization that provides clothing to the impoverished and homeless children within Wake County. They believe that it is completely unacceptable to limit a child within their educational and social development simply because they do not have appropriate clothes for school. They employ the generosity of schools, businesses, agencies, foundations, and individual volunteers to make sure that clothing is never an issue for children within the community. Note in the Pocket is able to achieve this by being alerted through schools and social service agencies throughout the community of those children in need. Then, through the kindness of donations, they supply those children with clothing year around. This wonderful organization began from a family ministry in 2005. One family saw fit to take it upon themselves to provide clothing for some of the less fortunate children in an impoverished school. That one act of kindness spread throughout the community and more people became interested in lending a helping hand. In 2012, the small family ministry that started it all became a church ministry of Our Lady of Lourdes and began operating under their non-profit status. It truly is a story of how one good deed can make a huge difference in the world.

In March of 2013, Note in the Pocket officially became a legally formed North Carolina corporation! And they have no plans of slowing down anytime soon. The corporation seeks stronger community support for high quality, weather and school appropriate clothing donations, volunteers to help process clothing donations and deliver clothing packages to schools and agencies, and the financial support to grow the staff and facility size needed to provide clothing to an additional 500 students per year. Note in the Pocket recently reached 2,500 students in 2015 and are on target to reach their goal of 3,000 students in 2017. They are truly living up to their motto: Clothing Children with Dignity and Love!

A PARALEGAL’S
PERSPECTIVE by Kris Alvarenga
From the moment a potential client walks through the front door, paralegals will always be there to assist. We, paralegals, are asked to wear many ballcaps and be the sidekick to our client’s superhero, the attorney. However, I have learned that we are so much more than that.
form their case. This is where my shoulder becomes important, as well as a box of tissue and a nice break. I sit back while they gather themselves, and find myself truly in awe of them.
For those who are hesitant to approach an attorney to fight for your cause, take a breath and jump in with feet first. Attorneys are not here to take your money; they are here to fight for you and triumph for you, the client. As for paralegals, we are always here by the attorney’s side, championing When that client comes through the door, your rights. We will always give most enter with such trepidation. When I walked into the world of Law back in August 2014, I thought I was going to be a “paralegal.” Truth is that as a paralegal, I am also a researcher and a public relations practicioner, but most importantly I am also the biggest shoulder to cry on. So, why am I all these jobs?.. because I chose to be a paralegal.
As a researcher, the attorney depends on paralegals to find the answer he or she needs. “Here is the case, here is the problem, now what is the answer?” This is where our research skills comes in and how well we can think out of the box to find that right answer. Then comes the most important part to me personally - talking to the client and getting those important answers. How Resistance Training Is A Healthy Choice
by Ella Frazier
Resistance training can improve bone, joint function, bone density, and muscle, in addition to tendon and ligament strength. Resistance training is something you can do at either the gym or at home; however, if you are one of us who says “I’ll do it tomorrow when the kids are asleep and it was three years ago, you may want to join the gym. This way you will not be distracted by the activities at home which seem to distract or give us an excuse to put it off til tomorrow. Resistance training is a vital component to healthy living. Its benefits include a better night sleep and improved posture. It can assist in the prevention and/or control of chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, arthritis, back pain and depression. In those who are aging, resistance training may help to reduce cognitive decline and increase bone density and strength to minimize the risk of osteoporosis. Resistance training is not only a good solution for the body but it is also good for the mind. Resistance training can boost self-esteem, perk up your attitude and even beat boredom. Resistance training also requires very little equipment. For example, you can get great results with dumbbells, resistance bands and a balance ball. Resistance training is something you can do at the gym as well as home. The use of dumbbells and barbells can be utilized at any time. You can do squats anytime and anywhere. The results of resistance training will provide you with a more fit and toned body while also boosting your energy levels and improving your mood and balance.

nyla elise clothing co. LOCAL BRAND KNOWN FROM THE TRIANGLE TO HOLLYWOOD by Tiara Sanders
If you live in Raleigh, chances are you’ve either seen the tee shirts and jackets of fashion designer Rick Moore and his unique Nyla Elise Clothing Company. You’ve probably heard the name tossed around in conversations and may be curious as to what all the fuss is about. Well if that is the case, then this article is for you! Rick Moore, owner of Nyla Elise, shares exclusive insight into his successful company and talks about all of the hard work he has put into his business in order to make it big. Mr. Moore named his company Nyla Elise after his daughter. This is a
fact that his daughter loves and is proud to share with everyone. In fact, when his daughter first saw someone else wearing the Nyla Elise brand, she felt a surge of pride for her father and his hard work. Moore boasts about his daughter saying, “She is not the selfish type and loves helping others”, which is a good representation of the Nyla Elise Company because helping others also plays a role in his business. Of course, there are challenges as with any venture. Moore shares on the challenges that come with being a designer and entrepreneur by saying, “The process of learning of what you’re about to start is the main challenge to overcome. You have to take in account about funding or how to get an actual product made”. He also adds, “That’s the main thing anyone should figure out because it is not for sure how 22

Moore shares that his biggest triumph dressed, and that is “If you look was staying up countless nights trying to create and hone his craft. At a young age, Mr. Moore expressed a passion in playing basketball. He would work hard to win games and he blossomed into a very talented and highly skilled player in high school. He was so talented that various high school coaches throughout North Carolina reached out to him to play for their schools. However, Mr. Moore held out for a school that had the best program to fit his talent. He eventually found that program in Word of God Christian Academy, also known as WOGCA. It was there that he made a name for himself in the basketball world, appearing in the newspaper quite often. Even though Mr. Moore excelled at basketball, he was eventually pulled toward his other passion: fashion. Growing up, his biggest fashion influences were his two uncles. He says, “They lived an elegant, edgy and very fashionable life. They took pride in their appearances and in who they were [as individuals]”. They showed him how a man

In a productive business nothing is ever achieved alone. Mr. Moore surrounds himself with a supportive team with the same mindset of being dreamers. These people share the same ideals and the same belief that it is important to make your dreams a reality. He states, “It is not easy to be on the cover of The City Insight Magazine and it is not easy to get a two-page article in Black Enterprise”. His drive helped him reach those milestones in his career and he continues to thrive in the fashion industry with a vengeance. Mr. Moore also believes that everyone has something in them that they love to do. Of course, everyone also has a story or a situation that could hold them back from their dreams. What is important is to not give up on those dreams and to push past the obstacles. This former basketball player turned fashion designer is living proof of that. Mr. Moore also thinks that it is good to have a perspective on what is important. He says, “First, I thank God and then I am grateful for my work ethic and talent”. Mr. Moore also believes that anyone can make it big from wherever they are located: “I can be a fashion designer and make it big in Raleigh. I do not have to go to New York, or California to make it big. Bring the big cities to where you are located”. While Mr. Moore is seeing success, he has no plans on slowing down. He feels that Nyla Elise is so much bigger than him or his daughter: it is a movement. He has 24

huge dreams to create a multi-million dollar company. Of course, it is not about the money or becoming rich to Mr. Moore, but it is about being able to foster a whole new generation of kids that may not have much or just need that extra push in the right direction. Mr. Moore creates, prints and sells everything that is under his company’s name. Every shirt he designs has a meaning behind it. A great example of this is on a shirt that reads “Natural Vibes Only” with one of his favorite pictures of his daughter on the shirt. He created that shirt because his daughter was at school and was wondering why her hair wasn’t like the other girl’s hair. He explained to her that her hair was beautiful the way it was because that’s how God made it. Natural vibes are the way to go whether it is in households or functioning in society. He sees his shirts as conscious clothing, a tool of empowerment. Nyla Elise is not only well received on a local level, on a national level as well by very known celebrities and influential people. He proudly shares that, “Cedric the Entertainer stood next to Will Smith with a jacket made by me.” It is not just Cedric the Entertainer that is noticing Moore’s designs, but actors like George Lopez and Olivia Wilde have supported the company along with many other celebrities. This is something Moore really aims for. He wants his brand to be on the platform and on the backs of celebrities because he feels like his designs are the best. He works extremely hard, uses the best material and has a unique and creative mind within the fashion world. In fact, Mr. Moore has known Kevin Hart for about three and a half years and Kevin has seen Mr. Moore grow as a designer. Last time they talked, Kevin told Mr. Moore, “I keep supporting you because you are such a hard worker”. Mr. Moore is modest about his success and shares that his accomplishments give him goose COVER STORY

bumps; he says, “no job is too small”. It is that mindset that is propelling Moore to the top!” Social media and technology has also played a part in Moore’s success. Mr. Moore partners with Lenovo. Lenovo has given him the tools to create and make his creations come to life. Lenovo traveled internationally to shoot a commercial using one individual from a select few regions, and once Lenovo made its’ way to the USA they chose Mr. Moore to do the commercial. Something that really sets Rick Moore apart is how he measures success. He doesn’t factor in money or notoriety, but rather by how many footprints he has made in someone’s life. Of success, he shares that, “I measure it by how many people come up to me and say how much I inspire them. I get letters about how I inspire others”. Because of this, Moore is certain that Nyla Elise will be a $100 million company five years from now. All of the feelings from his garments are good feelings and will make you feel good about yourself. His clothing obtains significant meaning along with making a notable fashion statement. Mr. Moore also shared some information on his upcoming book and how it is going to be about his business. It will touch on the things he experienced in life and on the process of starting his business. He says that
being an entrepreneur can be frustrating and the experience of starting a business can be a bit overwhelming. People want success quick and fast which he calls a “microwave America” and America needs to get away from that concept. People need to realize that the best stories are the under-developed stories being that struggling is the part to break through to reach success. If there is one thing Moore would like people to remember about him, it is that he doesn’t believe in dream killers that treat his work like any other type of work. He only focuses on the positive forces in life and those who help instead of hinder. This is something Moore shares when he speaks at colleges, high schools, and to regular youth to empower and inspire. Nyla Elise clothing line is for anyone who wants to make a positive statement with apparel while looking and feeling great in the process. To learn more, visit www.nylaelise.com.

Dexter Henderson, the founder of the Professionals Catering It’s More Than Just Services, is addressing that issue by using his culinary skills, and making affordable chef prepared by Ella Frazier meals available to you. A graduate of the Wells Culinary Institute, Dexter Henderson spent many years in the kitchens of top-notch hotels perfecting his craft prior to starting his own business, the Professionals Catering Services in 1998. In addition to preparing meals, Dexter also offers event set-up at no additional cost.

“Creativity and presentation is one thing I am big on and I must do it well since I have gained a lot of recognition for creating that ‘wow’ factor when you walk into a ballroom that I set up. Creativity and presentation is what sets me aside from other caterers. I received a lot of recognition from hotels I’ve worked for like Holiday Inn and Sheraton”, said Dexter. He also worked for the famous Peabody hotel for six years. According to Dexter, “the Peabody wanted me to teach them different styles of room setup like a chevron setup used for weddings.” In 2009, Dexter survived a brain aneurism, which led to a massive stroke. This resulted in a loss of memory. “I had to learn to read again at the age of 45. It took me five years to completely recover.” Dexter also stated that “From a dinner plate to the ballroom setup is something I find to be very therapeutic. I have cooked for several celebrities like Kool and the Gang and Candi Staton to name a few. I also do fruit carving and some ice sculpting.” When Dexter is not working he can be found walking the track at Chavis Park in Raleigh to get his exercise and imagining his next dish. Walking for the Cause by Joshua Henry
Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer found within American women. In fact, the chance of a woman having breast cancer within her lifetime is 1 in 8. It is the second leading cause of cancer related death in women in the United States. However, it is human nature to rise up and fight. That is why the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk was formed. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer humbly began in 1984 when Margery Gould Rath, a cancer survivor herself, wanted to celebrate other cancer survivors by raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Along with her fellow survivors and volunteers, she created what was dubbed a “move-along-a-thon” to bring people together to help combat cancer. That very first event (held in Boston) drew in about 200 people and was the catalyst for an annual event that would go on to become a movement! Since its inception, Making Strides walks have seen more than 11 million walkers participating in over 300 communities across the country. It has also raised over $685 million for the fight against breast cancer! Not bad, but there are still miles to go if we want to see the end of breast cancer! You may be wondering how exactly raising this money helps saves lives. Simply put, the money the American Cancer Society procures from donations from walks like the Making Strides walk aids them in the promotion of prevention and early detection of cancer. Education is an important aspect in prevention. Only by knowing how cancer works and what signs to look for can we make strides against breast cancer. The money raised in these events also goes to support those fighting in their recovery. The American Cancer Society provides information and support to those who need it. Struggling through breast cancer is hard enough without having to worry about getting a ride to the treatment center or finding a place to stay that is close to the center. That is why the American Cancer Society has trained people waiting to step in and provide a helping hand. 36

And of course, the funds aid in the research to find a cure for breast cancer (and other cancers). The funds that the American Cancer Society has raised from Making Strides walks and the like has led to the development of potentially lifesaving breast cancer drugs like tamoxifen and Herceptin. It has also helped in the discovery of those genes in the human body that are directly linked to breast cancer. These developments are remarkable and put the human race one step closer to finding a cure.
Of course, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is not the only event formed to battle cancer. The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life events also bring communities together to honor survivors, remember loved ones, and fight back! What began with one man (Dr. Gordy Klatt) walking a track for 24 hours to raise awareness and funds has turned into a worldwide phenomenon that has raised The great people at Making Strides would not almost $5 billion in the fight be able to support the community as much against cancer! as they do without a little help! The October 15th walk was presented by Duke Cancer Whether you have been personally Institute and supported by great organizations affected by cancer or know someone who has, it is important within the community like Genworth, TJX, that we rally together in this fight!
