The Editor’s Insight By Kris Alvarenga Being named The City Insight’s newest Editor-inChief is a humbling honor that has been given to me. It is also one that bears a great responsibility that I am ready to take on. The City Insight is one of the Triangle’s most important publications because it represents the true voice of the community. I walked into this amazing position with goals already set in mind. Thank goodness, I work with the most communicative publisher ever! Joseph Crawford has not only been patient, but he has also been an active listener whose primary focus is all of you - the readers and and businesses. My first goal is to extend our local readership. By doing this, two wonderful things will happen. The first is that we will be able to inform even more readers about what is happening in our communities. The second will provide businesses an equal opportunity to compete in the marketplace by providing more diverse and intelligent ad space geared for our readers. These two accomplishments will offer our readers and partners a new and amazing reading experience that will speak to those from ages four (4) to 114. The Origins of the Thanksgiving Turkey By: Ga Ming Gao
When it comes to Thanksgiving, everyone has their own take on what the meal should consist of, but most people can probably agree that the classic holiday meal includes the following: turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potato casserole, and green bean casserole. The real star of the meal is of course, the turkey. But have you ever wondered how the turkey became such a huge Thanksgiving staple? Why not pork, or roast beef? A common misconception is that turkey was served at the first Thanksgiving with the Plymouth Colonists and Wampanoag Indians back in the 1600s and the tradition has been passed down through many generations until present day. With the availability of wild fowl in the new Plymouth colony, birds were probably part of the meal, but historians have no clear indication that turkey was specifically a main course at this gathering.
less substantial for feeding bigger crowds. Some birds were also tough to eat, or had a fishy taste based off of their diet before they were prepared. Another perk to serving turkey during the holiday was turkeys had a tendency to be bigger during the fall. During the spring and summer, turkeys were not as plump because they had less to eat, but gained significant weight by feasting off of nuts and seeds from the fall harvest. So now that we know about the origins, what about the way a turkey is prepared? During the medieval ages, a common way to prep meat was by boiling or preserving it and then seasoning with herbs and spices. Could you imagine serving a whole preserved turkey to your family and friends for Thanksgiving? Fortunately, an alternative option was to roast the meat. This was typically done only if the meat had plenty of fat, which was the perfect cooking technique for a turkey during the fall.
However, as time progressed, and turkey was more readily available in Europe and in the New World, it became more of a household staple for larger meals. In the 1500s and 1600s, Europeans ate all types of fowl, including geese, peacocks, swans, and herons. Turkey was a huge game changer. This was partially due to the fact that other fowl, like geese, was 10

Sometimes, turkeys were stuffed as well. This is no new concept. Food historians tie stuffing meat back to the Romans and it was commonly practiced during the Medieval Ages. Stuffing, or dressing, depending on where you are from, has the ability to enhance the turkey’s flavor, and could include a variety of food items. During the time of the pilgrims and Indians, fowl was most likely stuffed with whatever they had available, which could include wild grains and nuts. Early Europeans stuffed their birds with a variety of items, including herbs, spices, chopped chestnuts, beef marrow, turkey innards, and bread rolls. As far as keeping the tradition today, one of the reasons is a health advantage. Turkey not only has a lot of protein, but is also quite lean compared to ham or certain cuts of red meat. Now, throw in all of your sides and your healthy main course option might not make a huge difference, but it’s the thought that counts, right?
Serving turkey for Thanksgiving is also reinforced by pop culture. When you see a movie involving this holiday, what do you see served a majority of the time? Turkey. You can also walk by any magazine food stand during November and you’ll more than likely see a delicious roasted turkey there too. No matter the reason for how the turkey became a fan favorite, I’m glad this big bird made it to our top Thanksgiving staples.

What is Your Choice By Ella Frazier Today there are more choices than ever when it comes to Christmas decoration such as choosing fresh or artificial trees. A Christmas tree is often the center piece of any living space; it’s often the focal point of gathering to exchange gifts or just to relax and enjoy conversations with food and drink. Today technology offers a wide variety of artificial choices for trees, which in some cases, from appearance only will require a double tack. Artificial trees can come either pre-lite or not. Some may be frosted or in different color and materials. They can be stored and maintained for years to come. Live trees can also come potted or cut. Live trees come in a variety of species and produce the smell of “Christmas”. You can recycle live trees and they require care. Live trees are usually grown and transported locally, therefore supporting your local economy. Real trees that are cut require care and attention. There are more variety in shape and size for you to choose from to customize to fit in your room(s). Tree variety that make great Christmas trees are Balsam fir, Colorado blue spruce, Douglas fir, Frazier fir, Scotch pine and White fir. Whether you choose the real or artificial tree,proper care will ensure a safe holiday season.

Avoid storing tree in attic spaces where there is exposed insulation. Also avoid storing your tree near open flames or water. You may also want to gently brush your tree to remove dust, etc. Maintaining Your Fresh Tree When you are looking for a tree, choose one that has little or no brown needles or dried out bark. Be sure to shake it and look for pests such as spiders and eggs sacs. Inspect the tree trunk for small holes and lines of sawdust. Be sure to remove bird nests which may contain mites, etc. Be sure to trim the trunk of the tree. Bounce or shake the tree once again before carrying it inside of your home. Fill the stand with water immediately after it is cut, but no later than 24 hours after being trimmed. There should be a quart of water for every inch of the tree’s diameter. Place your tree away from heat sources like fireplace, radiators, direct sunlight, space heaters, and heat vents. Keep water in the base, which should be above the base of the tree trunk. Consider the size of your ornaments and the size of the branches when decorating.

EDITOR’S NOTES: I love having conversations with my son, and I thought I would share our latest conversation because I love the way he thinks. However that conversation turned into something else that was magical. He wanted me to write his words down into an article for Daddy’s magazine. These are his own words about Christmas, and this is his first article. Harvey is only four-years-old making him the youngest journalist at The City Insight Magazine. I hope this warms your heart as much as it did mine. Welcome to my home, and come inside. You can play with anything you want but don’t touch the breakable stuff. I want to tell a story about what Christmas means to me, and to children, and puppies and grown-ups and everyone in the world. The first thing I think of is of Santa Claus. Santa looks like he has big whiskers and if you’re naughty, then he will give you a card to tell you to try to be good. He has a belt to hold his trousers up and he has a coat and a hat so he can look like Santa and he can stay warm. I think Santa has a Christmas rocket or a Christmas plane so he can fly all around the world to give presents. The sled is not fast
enough. I also think Santa has a puppy and he is taking him out right now for a walk. He has the puppy because he got him from the North Pole General Store. He likes puppies and dogs and he can take care of them and keep them safe. The puppy's name is Henry because I dream of Santa and I heard Santa say that to me in the dream. Mrs. Claus is cooking some breakfast for Santa and her. I think she is making Christmas Tree Soup. It's called Christmas Tree Soup because it’s like Spaghetti Christmas Tree soup which is super, super hot. So we need to cool it a little bit and you need spaghetti, meatballs, bananas, oranges, apples, and pumpkins to make it.

I think of the elves too. They help Santa make toys and fix toys. They have jingly bells on their hats. They check the list of naughty and nice children twice. I think they do this for Santa because the paper is too long with all the children’s’ names on it and it's rolled up and it goes down to the floor when it’s not rolled. That's too much for Santa to read. Snow on Christmas is so cold and chilly and fun to play with. I like sledding and snowball fights. I think the snow comes from the clouds or the rain. Snow is important for children on Christmas to play with. The reindeer are good and they are super, super special. They have antlers and they can guide Santa's sleigh. They are nice to look at and Rudolph was not the favorite but he came to be the favorite. I think the kids in the world like Christmas and other Christmas stuff like trees, decorations, pots to hold the trees, turkey, soup, chocolate, cookies, and milk, which Santa loves! You bake some cookies like sugar or chocolate chip and we get some milk. We put the milk and cookies on my learning desk and I do it to say thank you to Santa for the presents. I think he enjoys the cookies and milk because they are always gone in the morning. 16

I wish I can work with Santa in the Workshop so I can make toys for all the children in the world like trains, planes, snakes, globes that have snow in them with Santa and the Christmas tree... snow globes. I think I need to help sick children and go with them to the Doctor's so that I can help them feel less sick and ask the Doctor what's happening inside of them. Then I can get the supplies with the tools to help them so they can have a happy Christmas. I want everyone to enjoy Christmas and be happy, safe, and sound. The End

OMG, It’s Great Lemonade! by Kris Alvarenga
In a Chron.com article written by J. Mariah Brown, the author wrote: “The importance of small business to local communities is emotionally rooted in buying and selling with friends and neighbors… In a big city, small businesses often offer a more diverse inventory or specialize in providing unique or personalized customer experiences. Small businesses also present new employment opportunities and serve as the building blocks of the United States' largest corporations.” Right here in the Triangle, such a small business is waiting just for you. Now, who doesn’t like lemonade? Lemonade is a staple drink in our country. However, the earliest written evidence of lemonade dates back to 1000 A.D. Lemonade, made in so many varieties, can be found all over the world. Today, though, we talk about OMG Lemonade. OMG Lemonade was established in April of 2017. People all over the world use the terminology “oh my god” when something is absolutely amazing, and this lemonade is. OMG Lemonade is a unique beverage 18

company that specializes in premium beverages. The purpose of OMG Lemonade is to open up the minds of people to different cultures. When you take a sip, you will feel as if you have traveled the world. The mission of OMG Lemonade is to swoop you away and give you an extraordinary experience through your taste buds. They offer mint lemonade, which creates an extravagant taste of fresh organic mint that they personally grow from their garden mixed with tart lemon. OMG Lemonade has many other unique flavors that will soon hit the market. OMG Lemonade was founded by Layla Quick. Her mother is the inventor of the digital feminine hygiene machine. Through that invention, it inspired Layla to start her own business. Her mother and father took a trip to Dubai, and as they walked into their hotel they were greeted with fresh mint limeade. In the African American culture, there is a preference to lemonade over limeade. They were amazed with the flavor so much that when they got back to America, they had to try and make it for themselves. Her mother

attempted to make the mint limeade, but it wasn’t quite right. Her mother, however, then made a contest between her sister and her, who happens to be a chef and is six years old than her. Layla ended up winning the contest. The mint lemonade was so good that her mom said “we should bottle it up!” Her mother took her to a brewing company to get the bottles. She was 14 and she never smelled or been around that much beer in her whole life. Clearly she was underage to drink beer but she had a purpose. She was there to learn how they bottle and cap their drinks. From there, Layla explored different marketing ideas and business names. Her mom, being a business woman, taught her how to get to her quiet place, turn out the noise in her head, and listen to her internal GPS. That’s how OMG Lemonade got its name.

Layla says, “seeing the joy and amazement on people’s faces when they tasted my mint lemonade inspired me to go even further.” She quickly learned that OMG Lemonade was something special. The long term goals for OMG Lemonade are to mass produce while still providing and maintaining great quality products to its customers. Cary, N.C. – Dr. Allan Acton is proud to announce the addition of a new associate dentist to his team, Dr. Matthew Bostian. Originally from New Bern, North Carolina, Dr. Bostian graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with awards in outstanding achievement in operative dentistry, prosthodontics and implant dentistry. After graduating, he continued his training at James J. Peters VA Medical Center in New York City, where he treated United States veterans and gained extensive experience working with anxious and phobic patients. Each person has a brand that is recognizable with adjectives like “dedicated, resilient, hard working or lazy.â€? Sight and memory are a powerful pair that work together to conjure images in the minds of people. Experiences are captured by sight, and the seeing of that same picture will bring back the same experience. When there is only one experience, the person will vaguely remember. Repeated experiences will strengthen the memory and go as far as to generate emotion. Products, services and people that have negative emotions attached to them will be avoided. Those things that have positive emotions attached to them will be sought. Time is the main factor in the strength of the memory onto emotion. Strength of memory is there when a repeated compliment is gained from certain clothing, restaurant visits or worker. Each time you encounter the compliment associated with them, the memory grows stronger. Time‌ Experiences cannot occur all at once. They must occur at different times and different settings to know they are genuine. That favorite coat gets compliments at the grocery store, the library, at work and at the gym.

Where Women Entrepreneurs Prosper Most By Kris Alvarenga
In 2016, we published a report from Merchant Cash USA that listed Raleigh as one of the best cities for female entrepreneurs to live and work in. Merchant Cash USA wanted to know what the best cities were for budding female entrepreneurs looking to operate a small business. The small business financial lender used data from the 2015 Census in some of the most highly populated cities, and ranked particular cities according to cost of rent for a home or office space, number of small businesses per 10,000 people, and the average unemployment rate per city. Merchant Cash USA also looked into what was available financially for female entrepreneurs looking for funding, and analyzed what grant and loan options existed for women-owned businesses in various states across the country. Raleigh listed #8 out of the top ten cities, while Oklahoma City ranked as #1. How has that changed since then? Magnify Money performed their own survey in August of 2018 and the results have changed. They surveyed the fifty (50) largest U.S. cities to find the best places for women who want to be their own boss, launch a business, or do both. After looking at data about women entrepreneurs across four 24

different categories (income, earnings, rate of self-employment, and parity of ownership), the data found that women who work for themselves are more likely to earn a decent living by doing so. These cities also tend to have higher rates of women who are self-employed. According to Medium.com, women entrepreneurs make up approximately 1/3 of all entrepreneurs worldwide. Studies have also shown that successful women entrepreneurs usually start their businesses as either a second or third profession by fulfilling a dream. Many entrepreneurs have experienced a considerable amount of dissatisfaction with their previous careers and in working for others. They found that by starting their own businesses, these unhappy individuals have now become satisfied with their personal and professional lives. In addition to starting their own businesses, women tend to offer more benefits to its employees like job training and health packages. Are there challenges to become a woman entrepreneur? Absolutely! There are challenges in any role as an entrepreneur, but more so as a woman. 2017 data from the National Association of Women Business Owners found that more than 11 million U.S. firms are now owned by women, employing nearly 9 million
people and generating $1.7 trillion in sales. However, this is still a minority number in a male-dominated environment. Challenges such as defying social expectations, dealing with limited access to funding, and struggling to be taken seriously can surely frustrate anyone trying to make themselves into a successful brand. At the same time, encouraging moments such as owning your accomplishments, and building up your support network can help create that balance between sanity and insanity. While volunteering is a great option, the best way to make a difference is through a donation. Addiction treatment is just a single step on the path to recovery and that path is made all the more difficult when money issues are added in. - Heartfelt Advocacy For Autistic Individuals
The word itself, autism, derives from the Greek word “autos,” meaning “self.” It was used in the early 1900s to describe the condition in which a person isolates themselves from social interaction. In 1943, child psychiatrist Dr. Leo Kanner, would publish a paper that recognizes children who were highly intelligent but displayed a need for being alone. Dr. Kanner later names their condition “early infantile autism.” Once upon a time, autism was considered to be “childhood schizophrenia” and generally accepted to be a psychological disorder caused by emotionally distant mothers. Children with autism were discouraged from attending school, and grew up in the seclusion of their family 34

homes. Sometimes, children with autism were inappropriately institutionalized. People did not believe that these special children could grow up to have productive employment and lead fulfilling lives. Today, we recognize this condition as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); a group of developmental disabilities that can render an individual challenged in the areas of social interaction, communication, and repetitive or restricted behaviors. ASD is a brain disorder which is normally identified within the first three years of an infant’s life. ASD also comes in varying degrees of severity, which means that no two people will ever be the same. It is a lifelong disorder that affects those at all stages of their life, and can also be

combined with other disabilities such as Sensory Processing Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome. Those afflicted with this condition can seek help through autism therapy in the form of behavioral, occupational, physical, medical and dietary, language, and complementary therapy, such as those involving music or art. Autism in North Carolina is prevalent. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, in 2016, about one (1) in sixtyeight (68) eight (8)-year-old school children may be diagnosed with autism on a national level. In North Carolina, that number increases to about one (1) in fifty-eight (58). In North Carolina’s public schools, during the 2014-2015 school year, there were more than 16,000 students with autism enrolled in all 107 school districts; there are more than 65,000 individuals in North Carolina living with ASD.
Parents and individuals with ASD cannot get through these difficult moments in life alone. This is where support groups such as The Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) come in. ASNC also provides an unlimited amount of support to professionals such as doctors and teachers. By working with professionals, ASNC can increase the quality of care for those afflicted with ASD. ASNC’s licensed psychologists and certified behavioral analysts emphasize evidence-based best practices, early intervention and learning through an individual’s life as part of their
specialized training. The goal, as ASNC underlines, is to increase the understanding and acceptance of individuals with ASD. The organization’s educational efforts have helped the State of North Carolina to have a lower average age of diagnosis than the nation as a whole. Through education, comes support in the way of families. ASNC’s locally based Autism Resource Specialists will help find resources for families, assist with school issues, and provide further education to families through workshops. There are more than 50 local chapters throughout North Carolina to provide this extended support and education to individuals and their families affected by autism. ASNC, in addition to their many community service activities, advocates for the needs of the autism community by forming and upholding valued relationships at the State Legislature and other policy-making bodies. This year, ASNC celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the annual Triangle Run/
Walk for Autism. “This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Triangle Run/Walk for Autism. From the first year and around 300 runners, the event has grown to 4,000+ participants stepping out to raise money and support the autism community. At the Triangle Run/ Walk for Autism, families come together to celebrate and share information and the community learns more about autism while enjoying a fun-filled event. Whether you run, walk, donate, or volunteer, the Triangle Run/Walk for Autism has something for everyone,” reiterated Laxton. 3 Things to Consider
Before Starting a Non-Profit By Sheyenne Kreamer
As someone who has spent 25+ years working with people who are stuck in unemployment, I’ve seen many people who thought they wanted to start a non-profit. While their visions and motivations are always admirable, they often have no idea where to begin, or what kind of difficulties they are going to encounter. Most people appreciate my advice to visit the website of the North Carolina Center for Non-Profits to download the document on “How to Start a 501c3.” Imagine their surprise when I show them that the Center advises against starting a new non-profit. Let’s look at three of the main reasons for this.

First, did you know there are literally thousands of non-profits in the Triangle area alone? Grant money has become incredibly competitive, and a young non-profit reconfirmed for me recentlythat a new, unknown organization has the most difficulty trying to acquire grant money. Too many non-profit start-ups end up closing their doors before they barely get off the ground. Competition for volunteers is a second reason to pause before jumping into starting a new organization. Have you built your own “tribe” of supporters? Running a fundraising event without volunteers can be a truly difficult experience. This begs the question – have you

considered trying to collaborate with someone else with a similar vision as yours? Lastly – how much time, money and energy do you personally have to put into it? Most non-profits are not setting themselves up to develop any ongoing, residual income, which simply means, you will spend all your own time and your own money providing services to others, or, trying to fundraise to pay others to perform the services. In either case, you can put yourself in danger of burning out. Understanding the pitfalls in this process is not a discouragement in any way – in fact I suggest you look at it as a motivator to go forward. However, there may be better ways to set up the structure and provide the services you wish to provide. An option to seriously explore is the concept of social enterprise. A social enterprise can be a for-profit business (much lower start-up costs) that has a social mission. A social enterprise can be set up to have multiple income streams, and because it involves the selling of products and services, you can pay the people who
are helping you to “fundraise” (create profits). Paid professional fundraisers can help you overcome the challenges of searching for volunteers. And then the profits from the sale of products and services will now allow you to fund your outreach services. The options for “adopting products to sell” go way beyond cookies, candy and donuts – and you may even find some that align with your mission! Social enterprises also have the flexibility and freedom to develop on-going, residual income streams (without worrying about unrelated business income). They can integrate membership products and monthly buying programs that allow them to “sell once” and receive income every month. The larger the residual income streams become, the more time freedom and money freedom you will have to serve your client base without spending all your time planning your next major fund-raising event. Over the last few years we have seen a lot of attention being put on mental issues. The increase in technology and its conveniences has brought about an escalation in depression and anxiety. We do not have to work hard physically, but we do have a lot more daily stresses than our grandparents. We drive to work and school and sit all day. A machine washes the laundry. We go to the store to buy our food, or have it delivered to our door. All of these things are designed to make our lives easier. However, our stress levels, depression and anxiety have skyrocketed far above our past generation. Simply put, our health is declining. Could it be that all of the modern conveniences are the cause? Maybe the depression, anxiety and stress was handled more naturally then, because they moved around for the majority of their day. They were plowing, planting, tending to gardens, feeding livestock, washing and hanging clothes by hand. All day of that movement made them sleepy, so to bed early to rise early. 42

We all have had some form of depression in our lives, but we have excused it away with statements like, "I am just not hungry," or "I want another helping of Mac & Cheese," after having four helpings already. I understand this because I am a comfort food eater myself. I used to eat three hot fudge cakes a day. I would go into the store where the bakery was. The bakers knew me by name and knew what I wanted when they saw me. I would get a fork and eat it in the car before I drove off. I had one after I ate my afternoon meal and one in the evening. I did this for two years! My memory was failing me and that is something I took pride in at one time of my life. I was always tired, did not sleep well and the things I loved to do were not important to me any longer. The negative thoughts built up, because I was gaining weight, not doing things that made me feel good about me. Those hot fudge cakes were giving me a fake boost from the sugar, because I was a sugar addict.

I was replacing those feel good endorphins with that sugar. To top it off, I was eating them alone, which comforted me, but reinforced needing the hot fudge cakes. It was an endless cycle that I was creating. It was not until I was running up the stairs one day and was so out of breathe, and felt a whole lot of things shake that did not before. I started really taking a self-inventory! I wanted to be around for my family; I wanted quality of life. I started doing resistance training, walking and building up to interval training. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE! I had not done any real movement since I was pregnant with my daughter in 1993. I started making this change in 2013. I really started to feel good about myself. I was setting and meeting small goals, which gave me a positive outlook on my life, it allowed me to deal with daily stresses, get better sleep and my memory improved tremendously. How did I do it?

We all believe that when we leave school, bullying will no longer exist. That is so untrue! I have listened to several of my family and friends express their frustration about the unfair treatments they’ve experienced from a coworker, supervisor or superior.

A 2017 survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute estimated that 61 percent of U.S. employees are aware of abusive conduct in the workplace; 19 percent have experienced it and another 19 percent have witnessed it. So I know you are thinking… What is Workplace Bullying? Bullying is legally defined as unwanted behavior that occurs over a period of time and is meant to harm someone who feels powerless to respond. However, since there is not a legal definition for Workplace bullying, workplace bullying is defined as “offensive, intimidating, 52

Overbearing supervision; Constant criticism; Blocking promotion; Exclusion, for example from lunches and drinks, relevant meetings, and important emails; Being overworked and expecting unreasonable response times; Making threats or comments about job security without foundation; Such as Threaten you by saying “If you report me, you will be fired!”; Yelling or humiliating you; Belittles your character or spread rumors about you; Sabatages your work.
If this is something you have been experiencing; then you should seek help. In situation such as this, you should speak to someone that you can trust such as a friend or a family member.; even a coworker that you can trust. You should first decide if you can speak directly to the one who is bullying you. Believe it or not, sometimes they are unaware of how they are coming off to their team. However, if that does not work, you should report them to Human Resources (HR) and file for a formal grievance.

A formal grievance should force your employer to investigate the matter. An employer should have a grievance policy that explains how the process works. Usually, the grievance is lodged with HR or your manager (unless your manager is the bully, in which case, if possible, you should lodge it with someone who holds more seniority). To help the case, you must document everything. The more proof the better the chance to solve the case.
According to the 1974 Health and Safety Act, it is the employer’s responsibility to protect the well-being of their employees. An unhealthy work environment stresses all employees; not just the target, and increases the rate of physical and emotional illnesses. If you are witnessing someone being bullied at work, please do your part and report it. If you don’t, then you become part of the problem.
If the grievance is not upheld, you have the right to lodge an appeal. If it is upheld, the person bullying you could be disciplined or even dismissed. As the old saying goes, “Stick and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” That statement is totally false! Words do hurt! In fact, it can cause people stress, PTSD and other issues such as: • • • • •
Hypertension; Auto-immune disorders; Depression; Anxiety; Suicide.

When we were younger, we always admired the Karate and Kung Fu actors on television and in movies. We asked, “Is it really true? Can I hit someone that way and have an effect on the person?” Those are some of the questions that By Stephanie and George Whitten ran through our minds as children which made us very curious about Martial Arts. We wanted to know what the value of Martial Arts were and how could it help us outside of throwing these amazing kicks and punches we saw. Our curiosity took different paths to get there; for George that path did not start till he got to college which is where he took his first Karate class. George’s instructor was a professional guy in the community that taught Karate for passion. George quickly realized that Martial Arts provided the same life skill training he received from his Mother. He was very fortunate in that regard and invigorated to hear those parental influences repeated by his Karate instructor. This experience helped him realize that Karate is not about punching, kicking or fighting. It is about developing an individual, and helping them grow to become the best person they can be. Stephanie’s fondness for Karate grew even stronger while she took her own path. She was enticed with the art of being a leader with the passion and discipline to help and care about people.

These philosophies are very true! Karate has a way of teaching this through repetition; it allows the mind and body time to adapt. Within that process, we realize that we can become leaders by helping others willing to study. We learn honesty through perseverance; you perform all 200 kicks because you realize that putting in the work makes your journey more rewarding. As an individual develops internally, just like anything else, your confidence and self-esteem grows as well. Karate helps those grow mentally and physically stronger. Once a martial artist can understand these doctrines, they are then better prepared to meet the everyday challenges of life; of course they will also have the skills to defend themselves if ever required. We were told separately many years ago that the best way to learn is to teach. We now have the ability and responsibility to share with our students the principles and values which we both have gained from studying Karate for the past two decades. Each student is different and requires a different approach to learning in order to reach their full potential. We understand, as instructors that our students, young and old, comprehend that the respect and discipline they demonstrate to learn and participate in Karate is the same discipline required to be successful in life. Karate is an art like learning to play a musical instrument. When you respect it and are ready to devote time to your craft, you will rise to greater heights. We have personally witnessed how embracing the art and living as a true Karate-ka (a person who studies Karate) will benefit your life and the people around you. Through our desire or any instructor’s desire to share their passion of Karate with them, hopefully, students are inspired to do the same. The focus as an instructor is not to develop the person with the best kicks or punches, but instead develop the person with strong character who lives with values and ethics for others and themselves. Our experience in Martial Arts says “YES, Martial Arts are still very relevant!” Considering today’s society, we have to be thorough, confident and have great selfworth to be successful. Martial Arts provide the pathway for an individual to learn their limitations, and push those boundaries or challenges out the way so that the true powerful and mighty person within them can come alive.
