The City Insight has always been a source of community news and culture around the Triangle and beyond. We feature those organizations and people of interest that make a difference and have a deep and lasting imprint on the future of our cities. As a lover of news and cultural trends, I aim to maintain The City Insight’s role as a dynamic publication focused on the latest stories of events, local leaders, community members, their lives and their achievements.

Even though we’re already into the new year, I have decided to make a prediction, or predictions, if you will, about those persons I think will shape our communities in the new year. Since Pantone, the source for color matching, already laid claim to the shades Dark Citron, Exuberance and Tillandsia Purple as the ‘it’ colors for 2014, we decided to use our expertise to profile some of the most interesting people in and around the state whom we believe will leave their mark on our cities for the better.

Another prediction: the arts will make BIG headlines this year. From the planned expansion of the Durham Performing Arts Center to planned performances at Duke Progress Center, expect to read a lot about the arts this year, especially between our pages.

The Regional Transportation Alliance has launched a new RTA Transit Innovations Series to support and advance current discussions on transit in Wake County.

The sessions, scheduled throughout 2014, include in person and/or videoconference presentations from experts on bus rapid transit and related innovations and research including express lanes, freeway caps, land use, circulators, and periodic comparisons with various rail transit options such as commuter rail, streetcars, and light rail.

Stirring sketches by the late Nelson Mandela highlighted an exhibit at American Tobacco Campus.

Stirring sketches by the late Nelson Mandela appeared in an exhibit at American Tobacco Campus from January 1 - February 26. The show explores parallels between South Africa’s apartheid regime and Jim Crow laws in the U.S. “Mandela: A Long Walk” is a Triangle exclusive, with roots in Durham and Raleigh. The exhibit features work from the art collection of Capitol Broadcasting Company (which owns American Tobacco). Starting in early January, WRAL.com will host an online overview of Mandela’s life, including photos and narrative from “A Long Walk.” Mandela died at age 95 in early December 2013.

In addition to Mandela’s charcoal and pastel sketches, the exhibit features several pieces -- some that visitors can physically interact with. In his journal, Mandela wrote: “These sketches are not so much about my life as they are about my own country. I drew hands, as they are powerful instruments, hands can hurt or heal, punish or uplift.”

“Mandela: A Long Walk” is the first in a series of diverse events marking the tenth anniversary of American Tobacco’s transformation from historic abandoned factories to a thriving hub of 21st century culture and business.

n 2011, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA celebrated 50 years of being moored in Wilmington, NC. Moored in quiet dignity and majesty, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, across the river from downtown Wilmington, beckons kids and adults alike to walk her decks. On board, visitors can envision the daily life and fierce combat her crew faced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

When the keel of NORTH CAROLINA was laid in October, 1937, she was the first battleship to be constructed in sixteen years. She was the first of 10 fast battleships to join the fleet in World War II. NORTH CAROLINA and her sister ship, WASHINGTON, comprised the NORTH CAROLINA class.

During World War II, NORTH CAROLINA participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle stars. After serving as a training vessel for midshipmen, NORTH CAROLINA was decommissioned in June 1947 and placed in the Inactive Reserve Fleet in Bayonne, New Jersey, for the next 14 years, awaiting the scrap yard.

Her fate would change, when North Carolina citizens raised $330,000 to preserve her as a WWII memorial and landmark of great historical and educational value. Today the ship is a reminder that from all across our great nation they came, young men who had grown up in the crucible of the Great Depression and were now determined to serve their country in its time of need. These are the men whose stories you will encounter through their oral histories, photographs, and mementos as you experience the Ship and the exhibits.

orth Carolina’s Research Triangle Park is already a hotbed of technology. Through Innovation Fund North Carolina (IFNC), an organization created to help entrepreneurs through pre-seed funding and mentorship for high-growth, scalable technology startups, the state as a whole will continue to attract the best and brightest.

“I congratulate the awardees on their successful completion of such a rigorous process,” stated Dr. Tony Mifsud, Executive Director. “It is exciting to see the companies and their technologies being developed here in North Carolina. Companies such as these will help boost economic growth here in the state.”

If you think you’ve got the next big idea, IFNC might be able to help you. The group accepted applications for its second funding cycle through February 7th, for pre-seed funding, $25,000 grants and up to $100,000 in loans, for startups in agricultural technology, advanced manufacturing technology, health care technology and IT/communications.

Individuals or companies interested in applying are encouraged to attend one of the scheduled information sessions prior to submitting an online application.

Recently, the fund announced a group of award winners for its first cycle of funding. Awardees were honored at a private reception in midDecember in Conover.

Employing a rigorous application method, IFNC works to ensure entrepreneurs benefit from the process while advancing core community and economic development objectives.

As a condition of the award, awardees must agree to milestone driven plans tailored to their business, intensive mentoring programs and having their business headquartered in North Carolina for a minimum of six years. The progress of each milestone is monitored, with mentoring in place to ensure each company’s success in preparation for the next stage of funding.

IFNC aims to bridge the financial ‘valley of death,’ which occurs after entrepreneurs have exhausted personal financing, and before their companies are attractive to angels, venture capitalists and bank lenders — the time in which most startups fail. In addition to pre-seed funding, education and mentoring resources are provided.

Founded in 2013, IFNC is part of a pilot project between Innovation Fund America, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and Catawba Valley Community College. IFNC’s founding partners include Fayetteville Technical Community College and City of Conover.

SUCCESS in Small Spaces

A garden, no matter how big or how small, changes everything for the better. Especially the gardener. Since nothing breeds success like success, all you need to do is stack the deck a little bit. Just like anything else worth doing, you’ll need a bit of specific knowledge, so read the plant tag information and ask a couple of questions. It’s not only OK to snoop here, it’s highly recommended. There are conditions that both plants and their keeper need in order to thrive. If you understand these conditions and match the plants you choose to fit them, voilà – success! Even in small spaces, matching to these conditions is important.

Match Point 1: Climate. Start with the USDA Hardiness Zone Map. By knowing what hardiness zone you’re planting in, you can choose the plants that are best suited to this growing condition. Know your zip code? Take a look at www.planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/phzmweb/ interactivemap.aspx to find the zone to match your plant selections to.

Match Point 2: Sun or Shade. The amount of light that plants need varies. Some, such as many fruits and vegetables, like full sun 6+ hours per day. Others, such as caladiums and heucheras, prefer various levels and periods of shade. Remember that morning sun tends to be gentler than afternoon blazes. Take a look at your planting site and see how much sun it gets morning through evening during your growing season.

Sure there’s more to know, but start small with these basics and you’ll find your small spaces can turn into an oasis!

Match Point 3: Soil and Water. Consider the type of soil you’re planting in. From the clay, loamy, sandy or silty mix of the garden to the soilless potting mixes of containers really counts. Related soil moisture and drainage is just as important as some plants like it drier, a few plants like it boggy, and most like it somewhere in between. What’s in your “soil’s cupboard”? Don’t know? Send in a soil sample to the state for testing.

If you’re starting small, either in a container, raised bed or a small garden space, key questions are: How big is this plant going to be when it grows up and what do you want to get out of it? Small spaces call for gardening small and gardening tall. Happily, dwarf and narrow plant varieties abound.

Match the planting site size to the adult plant size for the best fit.

The Bible says, “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” (Lamentations 3:40).

If we as Christians make a resolution, what kind of resolution should we make - praying more, reading the Bible more, attending church on a regular basis? There is nothing wrong with these goals, but if there is no power in our resolution these goals will not last and they will become wishful thinking. If God is the center of our resolutions, they will be successful.

John 15:4 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

If our resolution is in agreement with God’s will, then He will enable us. Philippians 4:13 tells us, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”

Mainstream healthcare systems are influenced by socio-economic conditions, biology, behavior and environment. The Center plays a role in assisting clients with reducing high blood pressure, managing or eliminating type II diabetes, diminishing or reversing the occurrence of cardio vascular disease, encourage healthy eating habits to support healthy brain activity to bring about clarity and mental acuity and more. This is done through access to center physicians, registered nurses, integrative health coaches, integrative medicine practitioners and other members of our holistic health team.

Southeast Raleigh faces high rates of poverty and unemployment, low education levels and low asset values.

Linger added: “We pay specific attention to the issues around children’s health in order to develop a plan to address each of the barriers that keep them from living healthy lives.” Childhood obesity, for example, is an epidemic in North Carolina and ranks fifth in the nation for obesity. Obesity rates in children who reside in North Carolina are staggering: an estimated 30% of children ages 10-17 are overweight or obese. Diseases which emerge as a result of obesity include high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes and some forms of cancer, reduced life expectancy and a decline in the quality of life in general, Linger said.

As part of SERA’s focus on integrative medicine,The People’s Integrative Community Health Center’s services are in alignment with the provisions of the new healthcare reform law (Affordable Care Act). The law includes a number of important provisions that will directly or indirectly improve the health of communities of color and impact racial and ethnic minorities through implementation of forward thinking approaches to healthy living in minority communities.

Newcomer to Drive Earnhardt’s No. 3 Car The pressure is on for 23-year old NASCAR driver Austin Dillon. The racing champ will race Dale Earnhardt’s legendary No. 3 car full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning in 2014 driving for Richard Childress Racing (RCR) in Welcome.

Earnhardt, regarded as one of the greatest drivers in auto racing history, died from injuries sustained in a crash at the Daytona 500 in 2001. Since the crash, Childress hasn’t rolled out the No. 3 car.

“I feel like I’ve been able to spend adequate time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series preparing for this next step in my career. I am truly grateful and looking forward to this opportunity,” said Dillon, a champion in both the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

While Dillon may be looking forward to this opportunity it has yet to be seen if the racing world is ready to see the No. 3 car back in action.

Octavia Rainey Community Activist Packs New Year with New Causes With her talk show (or what she calls a “chat show,”) Raleigh resident and local activist Octavia Rainey plans to make voter registration a top priority for 2014.

“With the new changes to the election procedures it’s going to be imperative that everyone is informed and registered so their voices can be heard.”

Rainey also plans to address the issue of homeownership and entrepreneurship for African Americans in the downtown Raleigh area.

“I will explore the factors as to why this issue exists and how we can fix it”, states Rainey.

Joe Bryan Wake Aims to Be Fittest, Healthiest County in America The greater metropolitan area of Wake County typically makes a lot of “Best” lists. Wake County Commissioner Joe Bryan and his fellow board members recognize the strides citizens have make to earn those designations. But Bryan believes more can be done to enhance Wake citizen’s quality of life. The Commissioners have set a goal (among many) to make Wake the healthiest capital county in America.

“We’ve been the healthiest county in North Carolina for the last four years. But I think if we can get out there and talk about our various recreational sources, our greenways, our famers markets, for example, it will make us all want to be a little bit healthier,” said Bryan, who also sees 2014 as a vehicle to continue more of the one-to-one outreach the Commissioners recently undertook.

As part of the seven stop Wake County Listening sessions, Commissioners and senior county staff are hitting the road to hear directly from the public about what county services are working and not working.

“The listening tour is a very good strategy because you get to meet people first hand,” said Bryan.

Immigration Law: DREAM Act vs. DACA

By John O. N. Eluwa, Esq. Some people confuse or take the Dream Act and DACA to be or mean the same; they are similar but not the same. The DREAM Act, or Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors was the proposed act that failed in the U.S. Senate after the U.S. House of Representatives voted on and passed it in 2010. The Act was aimed at and intended to favor illegal immigrant children present in the U.S. who have made strides in their lives through education, business, and service in the various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Act was never passed into law in 2010.

Whereas DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals -- is similar to the DREAM Act in that it came about for the same purpose of helping certain young or illegal immigrant children who entered the U.S. before the age of 16 years old and have improved their lives while living in the U.S. illegally. Deferred action came into effect via Executive Order issued by President Barack Obama’s Administration on June 15, 2012.

More About Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals: Deferred action is a discretionary determination to defer removal action of an individual as an act of prosecutorial discretion. Deferred action does not confer lawful status upon an individual. In addition, although an individual whose case is deferred will not be considered to be accruing unlawful presence in the U.S. during the period deferred action is in effect. Deferred action does not excuse individuals of any previous or subsequent periods of unlawful presence. Under existing regulations, an individual whose case has been

deferred is eligible to receive employment authorization for the period of deferred action, provided he or she can demonstrate, “An economic necessity for employment.” The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can terminate or renew deferred action at any time at the agency’s discretion.

What is deferred action for childhood arrivals?

Eligibility for DACA Persons eligible for DACA may request consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals if they: 1. Were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012; 2. Came to the U.S. before reaching their 16th birthday; 3. Have continuously resided in the U.S. since June 15, 2007, up to the present time; 4. Were physically present in the U.S. on June 15, 2012, and at the time of making their request for consideration of deferred action with USCIS; 5. Entered without inspection before June 15, 2012, or their lawful immigration status expired as of June 15, 2012; 6. Are currently in school, have graduated or obtained a certificate of completion from high school, have obtained a general education development (GED) certificate, or are an honorably discharged veteran of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the U.S.; and Have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, three or more other misdemeanors, and do not otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety.

On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several key guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal, and would then be eligible for work authorization. Individuals who can demonstrate through verifiable documentation that they meet these guidelines will be considered for deferred action. Determinations will be made on a case-bycase basis under the guidelines set forth in the Secretary of Homeland Security’s memorandum.

VISIT

Persons that are successfully approved/considered for DACA are also issued an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), or “work permit.” They then will be able to apply for a Social Security Card through the Department of Social Security Administration. Upon obtaining a social security number/card, they will in turn be able to apply for and be issued a state driver’s license.

Ultimately they will hence forth live without the fear of being arrested by ICE, detained or placed in Removal/Deportation proceeding. Best of all they are able to work or run their own businesses legally and provide for their family.

“We are working on questions of the future of food -- how and where we grow it, who has access to it, and how it supports our community values. They say that you change the world by thinking globally and acting locally and we see that idea as a smart way to frame our projects,” said Community Food Lab Founder, Erin White Sullivan.

Throughout 2014, the Raleigh start-up will continue to build stability, where a big part of that, “... will come from doing lots of work close to home with an understanding of how it relates to larger global systems. Safe, Secure, Livable Communities The City of Durham has seen its challenges over the years. And through most of the turnaround, seven term Mayor William V. “Bill” Bell has helped to shape the new direction.

In the new year, Bell and the Durham City Council have adopted a series of goals around creating safe, secure and livable communities for every Durham-ite.

This involves continuing to work on reducing crime rates, improving access to affordable housing and promoting neighborhood revitalization.

On a personal level, Bell pointed out a more intimate goal. “I consider myself to be a pretty good listener, but in 2014 I want to become a better listener to my city council colleagues, city staff and the community, in seeking solutions to some of the challenges facing our city,” said Bell.

FTC TO CONSUMERS Hang Up on Tech Support Refund Scams One sunny summer afternoon my phone rang. It was a man claiming to be a third party tech representing Microsoft. He was calling to inform me that Microsoft had been monitoring my computer and detected a virus...

With great urgency in his voice, the man said he was authorized to discount the fee to remove the virus. Also, he said not to worry because Microsoft would reimburse me. (Uh-huh. And I’ve got a nice new bridge over the Nuese River for sale. Cheap.) I hung up.

While I was alert enough to say ‘No,’ others aren’t so lucky. That’s why the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning consumers if they get a call promising a refund for tech support services, it is just a new twist on an old scam.

Tech support scams try to gain consumer’s trust and access to their computer, and personal and financial information. Typically, a fraudster calls claiming to be a computer technician from a well-known software company, like Microsoft, and says they’ve detected a virus on the consumer’s computer. Their goal is to trick consumers into giving them remote access to their computer or paying for bogus software they don’t need.

In this latest version, scammers call consumers who may have been victims of an earlier tech support scam under the guise of checking on their “satisfaction” with that service and offering a refund or new service when they express

their dissatisfaction. Others may claim a company is going out of business and providing refunds to people who paid for technical support services that will no longer be provided. But it’s all a hoax. Once consumers give their banking or credit card information for a refund, the scammers actually take money from their accounts.

“ ... a fraudster calls claiming to be a computer technician” Anyone who gets these types of calls should hang up immediately and file a complaint with the FTC. Consumers who paid for bogus tech support or tech support refunds using a credit card should contact their credit card company and ask to reverse the charges.

The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them.

He has been a singer/songwriter for most of his life, beginning at age 11 with “Love Find Me.” When asked why he chose to start singing country music, Brown has a simple, genuine response: “I grew up in the south and didn’t realize what I was writing fell under the country genre. I just write and sing the songs that I feel,” said Brown. Nonetheless, “It helps that I have a southern drawl.”

Brown debuted his first single and music video, “Look Around the House,” in November 2012. Most recently Brown has been featured in a musical clip in the independent film, Blue Caprice. The drama recounts the story of an abandoned boy who is lured to America and drawn into the shadow of a dangerous father figure, inspired by the real life events that led to the 2002 ‘Beltway Sniper’ attacks.
