NON PRO FIT ORGA NI Z ATION S : MAK I N G A DIFFERE N C E IN TH E COMM U N ITY By Dr. Shanessa Fenner

I

t takes compassion, empathy, and a giving spirit to want to improve the lives of others. The needs in our world today are tremendous and many individuals are facing hardships and painful seasons. Nonprofit organizations play a vital role in enriching the community by helping the people who live in it through these tough times. Although our individual efforts may not solve the problems, together we can make a difference. Read on to learn more about two compelling nonprofit organizations and their extraordinary missions to help individuals in need. Fayetteville Urban Ministry Fayetteville Urban Ministry has been a staple in the Fayetteville community since 1974. Throughout the years, they have continued to modernize and add more programs. The organization operates with four 8

major programs that have grown throughout the community. The programs are: 1. The Nehemiah Project: The project entails home repairs for low-income home owners who live within the Fayetteville city limits. The City of Fayetteville thecityinsightmag.com

has partnered with Fayetteville Urban Ministry and has given grant funding to hire contractors to execute home repairs in order to bring these homes up to living conditions. Some examples include HVAC replacements, wheelchair ramps, roofs, floors, plumbing, and more. 2. The Adult Literacy and Education Center: This program does everything imaginable to improve the literacy skills of the homeowner or anyone in the home. It helps with GED preparation, ESL classes, career readiness, job resume building, budgeting, and building an individual’s overall literacy skills. The program also matches people with tutors. 3. The Emergency Assistance Program: During the pandemic, this program grew even larger because so many individuals were let go from their jobs. It includes a huge food pantry, a clothing closet, and and provides financial support by helping individuals pay their rent, utilities, or mortgage. 4. The Find-A-Friend Program: This program serves at-risk kids through interpersonal skills, life skills workshops, mentoring, and tutoring. A brand new facility 9

has been built for this program because it has grown so much. The goal is to match each child with an adult mentor. Background training is conducted and the mentor is required to spend eight hours a month with the child. “Between both facilities and the four programs, we easily serve over 10,000 people at this time,” said Johnny Wilson, executive director of Fayetteville Urban Ministry. “Due to the pandemic, in the last couple of years we have doubled to serving 20,000 people and we serve all of them free of cost.” For every dollar that is donated to the organization, 93 cents of it goes back into the community. For more information visit www. fayurbmin.org or call (910) 4835944. H.A.I.R. (Having Aunties In Reach) In 2019, Tameka Shipman, founder of H.A.I.R., was thinking about the start of the school year and wondered how she could give back to the students. She knew that everyone usually donated book bags, but she wanted to do something different. Shipman reminisced about being raised by her grandparents, and her grandma did not know how to do her hair, so she decided it would thecityinsightmag.com

be a great idea to braid female students’ hair free of charge for back-to-school. “I wanted to do a back-to-school braid drive being that I am a natural hair care specialist,” said Shipman. “We braided 40 female students’ hair for free two days before school started and the organization has been running with it ever since.” Shipman has been doing hair since the tender age of 12 and she wanted the organization’s name to have the acronym H.A.I.R. She had to strategically think about what words could stand for in H.A.I.R. The words "Having Aunties In Reach" literally rolled off of her tongue immediately and she stuck with it. The nonprofit currently serves Wake County and Columbus County. They are looking to expand to other counties. Shipman’s ultimate goal is to have a chapter in every state so they can be a blessing to more kids. H.A.I.R. caters to children 5 – 12 years old. They plan monthly activities for kids for 2-3 hours each month. Some of the activities or skills include selfesteem, early entrepreneurial

10

skills, hair braiding tutorials, juice & paint, personal hygiene care, how to take care of your body, and more. This past April, a 12-year-old entrepreneur came to teach the students how to bake and the pre-teen shared how she established her own cupcake business. In June, they will offer a look and learn for 15 kids. “I will teach them how to braid, do basic cornrows, or fix basic single plaits” said Shipman. “We have aunties, uncles, grandparents, and older cousins raising children so we can take them off of their hands for a few hours each month,” said Shipman. “We do this so the adults can have some free time to work on their mental health, go grocery shopping, or get the supplies that the kids need.” Sponsors and donations are welcome. TR I A N GLE Staycation Destinations By Meredith Hemphill It can be hard to find the time to take a big vacation. For those of us with busy schedules, a staycation can be the way to go. Day trips and weekend getaways to explore local gems are the perfect way to get some time away from the daily grind. Here are some Triangle destinations worth staycationing at.

CLOER FAMILY VINEYARDS This Apex winery is family owned and operated and established by North Carolina State horticulture graduate Tam Cloer. “We are the only family-owned winery in the Raleigh-Durham area that grows its own grapes and produces its own wines on-site,” explained cofounder Pam Cloer. Cloer Family Vineyards carries two muscadine and three European-style wines. Tastings, including a brief wine education, are available anytime. Visitors may walk through the vineyards, take self-guided tours of the winery, visit the sheep, or have a picnic with a bottle of wine. “If they forget to bring food with 12

them, we have tons of NC food products available for sale so they can make their own charcuterie basket,” Pam said. Cloer Family Vineyards hosts classes and events. Upcoming classes include cupcake decorating, acrylic pour charcuterie boards, candle making, and acrylic pour wine glasses. Check their calendar for dates and times.

CHATHAM HILL WINERY Established in 1999, Chatham Hill Winery was the first winery in the Triangle. They are in Cary with a market and eatery on site. Their wines are produced using traditional methods. They state on their website that they “simply assist nature in the alchemy of turning grapes into wine.” Chatham Hill Winery makes ten European-style, two Scuppernong, and five “Sweet Carolina” fruit-infused wines. There are live music nights on Fridays from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Wine tastings are offered every Saturday and Sunday. thecityinsightmag.com

themed programs and public events held at the Ecostation. See their calendar for upcoming opportunities. If there are children in your life, keep an eye out for their Take a Child Outside Week events September 24-30. Reservations are required for parties of eight or more.

ARROWHEAD INN

PRAIRIE RIDGE ECOSTATION

The Arrowhead Inn, a former plantation house circa 1775, is now a romantic couple’s retreat in Durham. There are seven guestrooms and two small cottages to choose from, all designed to sleep two people. A third guest may stay in the North Carolina Cabin for $25 more. There is a fireplace in every room, and guests are treated to small luxuries like fresh flowers, writing journals, and terry satin robes. The Arrowhead Inn is adultsonly, they do not take children under 12 years old. The grounds have beautiful gardens, outdoor seating areas, and a fire pit. A three-course breakfast made with herbs from the gardens and local produce is included. Special packages and add-ons are available.

Prairie Ridge Ecostation is part of the NC Science Museum. While it is used for research and conservation purposes, it’s also open to the public. “What makes [the Ecostation] special is just the wide variety of nature you can experience while you’re here,” said Brian Hahn, a natural resource specialist at Prairie Ridge. The Ecostation includes an outdoor classroom, native plant garden and arboretum, ponds, walking trails, and the Nature PlaySpace which has programs for young children several days a week. “It’s a playground with no playground equipment,” Hahn explained. “The idea is for that to be a first step to getting back to being comfortable outdoors.” Visitors can sign up to participate in citizen science projects, as well as attend the variety of nature13

These are just a few of the wonderful staycation destinations in the Triangle. Give one of them a try next time you need a quick break. thecityinsightmag.com

Entering the

NBA

CHET HOLMGREN

By John Stewart

I

attempted to complete this prospect writeup before the 2022 NBA draft, however that did not end up happening. We now know that Chet was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder and will likely spend a considerable amount of his career in Oklahoma City. Regardless, since we haven’t seen Chet play yet I believe my pre-draft thoughts are still of some intrigue.

I really wanted to be able to use a catchy name with some alliteration to describe my top four ranked players in the 2022 NBA draft. The “fab four”,the “fantastic four”,or even (admittedly less exciting) the “frankly fine four” would have worked. Chet Holmgren, Jaden Ivey, Paolo Bancharo, and Jabari Smith are all better than “fine.” Each one of these young men is exciting, skilled, and overwhelmingly likely to play high-level basketball for a long time. But, certain individual limitations limit the top of the 2022 NBA draft from having the same top-end talent as, say, the 2019 NBA draft.

Let’s start with Chet Holmgren from Gonzaga University. A tantalizing defender with the horizontal athleticism of a forward, the straight-line speed of a guard, and the rim protection of a big makes him truly unique. My favorite defensive comparison for him is the Memphis Grizzles' Jarren Jackson. I rarely compare individuals to thecityinsightmag.com 14

Jackson, as he is a game-changing defender. As amazing as Jackson is defensively, he has pitfalls that Chet also subscribes to, the main being core strength. When Jackson or Holmgren absorb contact from a driving guard or forward, they do not have the core strength to stay upright and therefore often foul when put in this scenario. This lack of core strength (and overall weight) will also lead to Chet being targeted for post-up opportunities from other team’s big men, which of course is not ideal. Jackson only averaged 24.8 minutes per game in this year’s playoff match-up against the Minnesota Timberwolves due to fouling in these scenarios. Just like Jaren, Chet does not foul as a weak-side rim protector. This is Chet’s main defensive skill and with his size, length, basketball IQ, and speed he will be one of the best weakside rim protectors in the NBA for at least a decade. It must also be noted that Chet’s horizontal quickness and length will make him one of the best big men in the league at switching onto smaller (often time faster) players. Offensively, the comparison for Jackson begins to fade. Chet is simply far better. Chet can handle the ball to a degree that players his size rarely can. He looks eerily 15

like Al Horford in fast breaks as a ball handler and when attacking close outs, however he is almost 2 inches taller. This skill has been huge for the Celtics and Hawks (where Horford has been used properly and played his best ball). Horford’s ability to handle the ball has taken away considerable pressure from both the Celtics and Hawks, who at times did not have elite level ball handling on their roster. Similarly to Horford, Chet combines his dribbling ability with above average levels of passing, making his transition skill translatable to an NBA environment where eager threepoint shooters will crowd the three-point line. Chet will never create out of the pick-and-roll or shift defenders with his eyes, but his passing will allow him to function as an elite transition threat. Of course, his size, speed, and athleticism will make him an above average rim finisher in these situations as well. Besides transition game, Chet seems to be a developed shooter, although his shot is slower, and he took relatively easy shots on low attempts at Gonzaga (3.3 three pointers attempted per game). He is a skilled shooter, but the comparisons to the likes of Michael Porter Jr. or Kevin Durant are asinine. Chet won’t be thecityinsightmag.com

shooting over the tops of players out of isolation or in movement initially. Nor does he have the ball handling skills to get himself into those situations. However, he will be able to spot up in the corner or on the wing and be a solid piece in a winning offense. The last component of Chet’s offensive game that I want to discuss is his isolation or raw scoring ability. This is where I differ from national media the most on this prospect. Many highly touted scouts have accepted that Chet will isolate in the mid-range, post ups, and maybe even from three. If this happens initially, it will be inefficient offense, but of course it could eventually become efficient if those skills develop. Chet simply does not have a tight enough handle on the ball to be an elite mid-range scorer. He is silky smooth for a big, but not generationally smooth like Kevin Durant. In those situations, Chet would likely have the ball taken from him or be bumped from his spot due to his lack of lower body and core strength. These same concerns of strength will occur as Chet attempts post-ups. NBA athletes are stronger than West Coast Conference collegiate athletes and will not allow Chet to steady himself in the paint. I 16

would imagine that upwards of 85 percent of players in the NBA will be able to do this making it nearly impossible for Chet to hunt for mismatches. After reading that last paragraph, one might think I am low on Chet. Not at all. I simply don’t think he is Kevin Durant. The way he is described on ESPN or by Skip Bayless makes him sound like he will be a main scoring option on a championship team. I would be shocked if this occurred. Instead, Chet is a unique weak-side shot blocker, fantastic at moving his feet and using length to stay in front of guards, and can rebound at an average rate for a big (and that’s just on defense!). He combines that unique defensive ability with fantastic transition play, above average passing, and good (not great) three-point shooting. Simply, unless Chet is hurt at some point in his career, he will be a useful NBA player for a decade to come. Even if he never develops into a super star, his ability to fit alongside other players will make him a useful NBA player at the least. thecityinsightmag.com

Beginner? A Guide to Start Working Out Today

Y

ou do not have to wait for the beginning of the year to start working out. Oh, what is that? You do not know where to start? Do not worry, there are many people who want to start, but for many reasons do not take that first step. I know for many years I tried going to the gym a few times until finally I got the nerve to go. I got there and I was very intimidated by not knowing what to do or how to use the equipment. I felt like everyone was looking at me and could tell I did not know what I was doing. No one was paying me any attention at all. They were busy getting their workouts done and I was the one with the anxiety. It was a whole 18 years before I set foot back into a gym. So, I 18

By Stephanie Whitten

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

utterly understand what it means to start working out and being unsure of everything about it. So, whether the doctor sent you, you want to fit into a special bathing suit, or are just ready to make a change for yourself, I would like to congratulate you on the first step of many in your journey. There are so many options available, but you are going to have to ask yourself a few questions. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?

Do you like to swim, run, or were you an athlete? You do not have to be in a gym to work out, and you want to do something you like or enjoy, so that you will keep doing it. Enjoying it makes working out easier. Do you want to see if you can get a group of friends together to start walking or dancing? thecityinsightmag.com

4. Track your progress. It is very motivating to see how far you have come and give yourself a reward.

WHERE WILL YOU DO IT?

Will it be at a small gym, group fitness classes, in the park with friends, or a home workout? Would you like to get a trainer or a coach to plan your workouts? The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of cardio a week, along with two to three days of strength training. It is recommended that you start at a moderate level and work your way up to add more intensity to your cardio for the recommended amount of 75 minutes a week. 1. Create a plan to get 30 minutes a day and you can split it up into 3 X 10 minute sessions. 2. Write down your goals. 3. Brainstorm anything that you think will get in the way of your new journey and how to combat it. 19

5. Measure progress by how you feel physically, emotionally, and how your clothes fit. The scale and body weight is not a good indicator. Weight fluctuates daily with hydration, fluid retention, and when you start resistance training, you will be putting on muscle. The weight on the scale may not change, but your body is losing fat and gaining muscle equally. Whenever we are incorporating anything new and exciting in our life, we may bite off more than we can chew, then we get discouraged and stop because we get overwhelmed. The important thing is that you are creating a new habit, and they take time. Be kind to yourself and focus on those small, little steps, and the next thing you know, you will arrive at the first goal you set. thecityinsightmag.com

COVER STORY

THE READY SHOWER:

Revolutionizing the Way People Take Showers By Dr. Shanessa Fenner

M

odern showerheads have been around for more than 250 years. Englishman William Feetham patented the first mechanical shower in 1767. Since then, showers have evolved over the years and today, shower manufacturers offer a wide range of products that includes modern electric and digital showers, shower enclosures, showerheads, body jets, and LED lights. The Ready Shower is a revolutionary shower created by Sabra Wilson, Founder & CEO. It enhances your bathing routine and has the remarkable ability to dispense hair shampoo and body wash from the showerhead using two dispensers that are placed behind the wall. You can select to use the shampoo or the body wash. Homemade or specially made body washes and shampoos can also be used. 20

Sabra Wilson, Founder & CEO

“We have a refill so that you can refill your canisters from home,” said Wilson. “We also have a refill cap so that you can use your own body wash or your own shampoo products.” And exactly how did Wilson come up with this invention? She was sitting at home watching TV, and a Dove commercial came on. The commercial showed the shower running and a bottle of Dove body wash sitting on the counter. The commercial thecityinsightmag.com

flashed from the running shower to the bottle of Dove body wash sitting on the counter. She wondered what was getting ready to happen. To her surprise, the commercial went off and nothing happened. “I thought that maybe the body wash was going to come out of the showerhead,” said Wilson. “I said if the body wash would come out of the showerhead, that would be a great thing.” She immediately began working on the innovative idea by putting it all together and thinking about her next steps. The first step was to obtain a patent. She hired an attorney and presented her idea to a group of individuals. She conducted a patent search to find out if there were presently any products on the market or in society that were similar or did the same thing that her invention did. Fortunately, there were no products like hers, and it took her about a year to obtain the patent on January 5, 2021. She had to pay $2,500 for a patent search and then applied for a utility patent that costs $7,000. “The process is very lengthy, it takes time to do it, and you have to focus,” said Wilson. “It was very challenging, and I made monthly payments for $550 to $600 in order to obtain my patent.” 21

Wilson is confident The Ready Shower will be a huge success and has never seen a product like it. She explained, “I’ve traveled a little bit and I have been to Germany and other places, and I have never seen anything that comes out of the showerhead where I don’t have to physically take the washcloth and lather it with the soap or body wash. I can actually push a button or turn a knob and it comes out of the showerhead to cut down on germs.” These showerheads can be installed in hotels, nursing homes, and prisons to help curtail the spread of germs. We are living in the time of COVID-19, and everyone is being careful about what they touch and how they use things. Wilson is a former hotel thecityinsightmag.com

supervisor and observed a great amount of soap, shampoo, and conditioners being wasted and left in the rooms. “They would often be smashed and the wetness would dissolve them so that you could not use them anymore,” said Wilson. “My invention helps to conserve these products and helps to cut down on the spread of bacteria and germs.” The installation of The Ready Shower will be an easy process. She said, “During our prototype process, we were trying to put it where it would be plumber friendly so that consumers can go to the store, purchase it, and install it themselves. In the bigger facilities it will have to be installed, but we are trying to do it both ways so that it will be plumber friendly so that it won’t be so hard to install it by yourself.”

22

The CEO is currently in the process of finding a manufacturing company who will make the product. “We have been speaking with several companies, and we are waiting on calls to see what opportunities may be available, and hopefully we will receive some good news on moving forward,” said Wilson. Wilson is a single mother of three: two girls and a boy, and she has two beautiful grandchildren.

thecityinsightmag.com

Her favorite pastime is spending time with her family, and she loves to love, laugh, and live life to the fullest. She works as a Customer Service Representative for Alaska Airlines and Avelo Airlines at the RaleighDurham airport. She was the #1 hairdresser in Columbus County North Carolina, and is presently a member of a nonprofit organization called H.A.I.R. (Having Aunties In Reach). “We have many events throughout the year for the children in Columbus County city limits and also in Wake County,” said Wilson. “We basically have back-to-school events like braiding or styling all of the kids’ hair for free for the first day of school.” She added, “We do Valentine’s Day, Halloween Trunk-or-Treat, and everything we do for them is free of cost, and all the students have to do is show up.” Some of the challenges that she has faced during the invention process have been the passing of her father, the passing of two step-kids, and living in an area where a lot of violence is happening. In spite of dealing with life’s hardships, she continues to persevere and not give up. “I have been working so hard 23

on this for years and I tell my children and grandchildren this is for them,” said Wilson. “I have been working so hard, and I have not been able to give them a lot during the years, but I know God has given me this idea and it will be a blessing.”

Her ultimate vision is for The Ready Shower to be in hotels, prisons, new homes, overseas, nursing homes, amusement parks, Lowe’s, Walmart, and hardware stores everywhere. When the product becomes available for purchase, she has plans to establish an online store. If you are interested in The Ready Shower, the ultimate showering experience, and would like to become a potential investor or form a partnership, visit www. thereadyshower.com or email info@thereadyshower.com. thecityinsightmag.com

“Where th ere’s tea, there’s hope.”

T

here isn't a day that goes by that we don't hear something about the wonderful benefits of green tea for heart disease and lowering cholesterol. But over the last few years there has been increasing interest in its ability to help with fat loss. You probably enjoy having a cup yourself or have family and friends who do. In the Western World it has taken off like a jet but has had traditional uses in Chinese and Indian culture 24

A r th u r Wi n g Pi n e ro for medicinal purposes and daily life for thousands of years. Some say that green tea is the healthiest drink because it is packed with powerful compounds that can benefit the body. The International Institute of Sustainable Development says it is the second most consumed beverage in the world after water: 3 billion cups every day. We will look at the effects green tea has on fat and weight loss in this article. thecityinsightmag.com

What Is Green Tea? Green tea is the common name for Camellia sinensis. Green tea is made by steaming, pan frying, and drying the leaves and buds of the plant. Black, oolong, and all other teas come from the same plant, but what determines the type of tea is the oxidation of the leaves, and green tea leaves are unoxidized which is why it contains beneficial antioxidants and polyphenols! Green tea also contains caffeine and the highest level of catechins (natural phenols and antioxidants) when it comes to teas. There are 4 catechins in green tea, and one of the main catechins that is being studied for fat loss is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). What Is The Benefit Of Catechins For Fat Loss? Research from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says catechins may help the body metabolize fat effectively, improve metabolic disorders, improve insulin sensitivity and increase

25

Brown Adipose Tissue (body fat) which helps to reduce the White Adipose Tissue and burns calories. It seems that the catechins and caffeine work well in combination. Additional research from the NIH says a green-tea mixture improves weight maintenance through thermogenesis, fat oxidation, and sparing fat free mass. Peer reviewed research stated that catechins and caffeine play a part in metabolism that can lead to weight loss. How can you get the best weight loss benefits from green tea? Medical News Today suggests 2 to 3 cups a day to help with weight loss which is generally safe, but some people with heart problems or high blood pressure should be careful consuming a lot of caffeine. There is more and more research available to help take health to another level. I will definitely get my green tea in today.

egardless of the uncertain state of the world, you never know when a crisis might occur in your life. Some days, bad things just happen. That is why it is important to know how to contact some attorneys who will work to make sure you are treated properly in legal cases. Two areas where personal attorneys may be needed are for traffic violation cases, and injuries or accidents. This article suggests a few attorneys based in the Raleigh, North Carolina area that specialize in these areas. The Law Offices of John Eluwa, PLLC provides attorneys for immigration, criminal, traffic violations, and personal injury 27

cases. Eluwa’s team has been practicing since 1995 and operates in Wake, Durham, Franklin, Harnett, Johnston, Orange, Person, Sampson, and Wilson Counties in North Carolina. The website for the practice, johneluwa.com, details the main areas of law that the lawyers there specialize in. These include, “Immigration, Criminal Law/Criminal Defense, Traffic Violations, Personal Injury, and Uncontested Divorces.” The Law Offices of John Eluwa have offices in Raleigh, Wilson, and Clinton. On the homepage of the website, they make it clear that they will “represent clients with immigration issues from any part of the world.” In fact, in the thecityinsightmag.com

past, they have been designated “Excellent” and a “Client's Choice” for Immigration services on popular legal services ratings Avvo. The website for the practice is very accessible and easy to navigate, and even has a way for you to pay bills online. You can contact John Eluwa and his office directly through the website via a contact form or by calling them at the number provided on the website. They are also active on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. There is another highly rated personal injury attorney worth mentioning. John McCabe P.A., whose website is mccabelawoffices.com, is based in Cary but serves all of North Carolina. The website specifies that McCabe specializes in personal injury and accident cases as well as workers’ compensation for these types of events. Similar to Eluwa, McCabe’s office has been operating since 1994. John McCabe has a “Superb” rating on Avvo and was named a U.S. News Best Law Firm for personal injury in 2021.

practice’s website is also accessible and easy to use. You are able to send a direct message through a contact form that informs McCabe of your case and allows him to get back to you. McCabe provides free consultations online but also does phone consultations. All of their contact information is provided on the website. Unfortunately, crises are bound to occur in our lives and we are mostly unable to predict when something is going to go awry. However, there are people whose job it is to make sure the process of making things right is easy and fair. Reach out to personal injury and accident lawyers if something has happened in your life that you need trustworthy assistance with.

One out of seven people experiences a migraine, according to the American Migraine Foundation. For most of them, the disease interferes with their education, career, and social lives. Fortunately, the last several years have seen a rapid increase in the treatment options available to those living with migraines. Four experts weighed in on this promising trend for migraine treatment. 40

Dr. Timothy A. Collins Dr. Collins is the Division Chief of Headache and Pain for the Duke University Department of Neurology as well as the Medical Director of Duke Neurology’s Morreene Road Clinic. He is board certified in neurology and headache medicine. Dr. Jaskiran Vidwan Dr. Vidwan did her fellowship in headache medicine at the University of Michigan. She is an American Osteopathic Boardthecityinsightmag.com

certified neurologist treating headache and facial pain at the Morreene Road Clinic. Dr. Gary Jay Dr. Jay is a professor of headache medicine in the UNC Department of Neurology and a neurologist at the UNC Headache Clinic. He has been treating headache and pain for 42 years and is a founding member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Dr. A. Laine Green Dr. Green is a headache specialist working at the Mayo Clinic’s neurology department in Phoenix, Arizona. He engages in both research and clinical practice.

CGRP Antagonists: A Sea Change in Migraine Treatment “Until a few years ago, we didn’t have any treatments that were specifically designed for migraine prevention,” Dr. Vidwan said. That all changed with the discovery of CGRP receptors. Researchers realized that the receptors are part of migraine genesis, although their function is still not fully understood. The result was an explosion of new drugs called CGRP antagonists which block CGRP receptors. Some of these new medications are preventatives and some stop migraine attacks. CGRP antagonists tend to have fewer side effects than other medications used for migraine. Dr. Jay explained that they are also safe for people who are unable to 41

take triptans, the long-standing go-to drugs for migraine attacks. “With these new medications, I have patients that come to me and say, ‘This medication changed my life,’” said Dr. Collins. Barriers to Treatment That Remain Just because new treatments are available doesn’t always mean they reach patients, however. “One of the issues is diagnosis is poor,” Dr. Jay said. He explained that migraine is only one of many headache disorders, and a patient can’t receive the best course of treatment without a proper diagnosis. Dr. Collins highlighted the severe shortage of headache specialists. Most people only have access to primary care or emergency medicine. “I think it’s important that education thecityinsightmag.com

increases for those people who are the point of first contact,” Dr. Green recommended. Even with a correct diagnosis and a prescription in hand, patients aren’t out of the woods yet. “The biggest barrier with all of the new treatments that have come out is probably the insurance,” Dr. Vidwan said. Insurance companies usually require prior authorization for CGRP antagonists, a process which can take a long time with no guarantee of approval.

42

Where Is Migraine Treatment Headed Next? All our experts agreed that neuromodulation is on the rise. Neuromodulation is a treatment in which a device electrically stimulates a patient’s nerves to change the electrical activity in the brain. According to Dr. Jay, it is a popular choice among people who are hesitant about medication. Pediatric migraine is also an area that is likely to see new treatment options soon. “A lot of these things haven’t been well-tested in the child or adolescent age group,” Dr. Green said. Once they have been, children with migraines should have more treatment options available to them.

RECOVERY COMMUNITIES OF

NORTH CAROLINA

and their divine service! Recovery from any kind of addiction is the stepping stone for an individual to lead a healthy and self-directed life. However, transitioning from one phase to another is a tedious journey; the complete recovery from addiction takes some time. This is where things like recovery programs and recovery communities come in, which offer a supervised environment. The basic treatment programs do not usually include an aftercare system; these programs do provide an extraordinary rehab environment but fall short of providing the long-term support that is essential to stop an addict from falling into relapse. The relapse rate in the US is estimated to be between 40% and 60%. This is where the recovery communities play a major role; communities such as the Recovery Communities of North Carolina include nonprofit organizations. The sole 44

purpose of these organizations is to give back to the community and provide mutual support that enables an individual to recover more efficiently. Impact of Recovery Communities of North Carolina A recovery community drastically impacts the decisions taken by an individual and ensures that they find a way to commit to their new life. Here is a look at how the recovery homes have an impact on the lives of those who they serve. Expert Guidance The people who need help get expert guidance from the volunteers and house managers. These people are always available to guide the people struggling to maintain good behavior and encourage them every day if anything goes wrong. These places have a set of rules, and the staff motivates thecityinsightmag.com

these people to follow these rules; however, if someone keeps breaking the rules, they face things like curfews. These places also keep a check and balance with regular drug tests that guarantee a clean environment. Emotional Support One of the most important impacts of these recovery communities is the emotional support they provide. An individual can find people going through the same phase or find alumni who have been through this phase in the past. This creates a sense of empathy among peers and allows them to discuss their concerns confidently and find role models. The relationship with other people also eliminates the factor of loneliness that an addict might have been facing for a long time.

Healthier Appearance An addict usually goes through a lot and loses all sense of well-being; it takes a toll on basics things like healthy eating, appearance, and personal hygiene. However, the recovery communities have a huge positive impact on these things. The addicts start noticing that things like their skin, eyes, and teeth are getting better because they have been eating healthier, drinking more water, and sleeping better. The end goal for an addict is to progress towards everyday life, and if it comes down to making a new life for themselves, they have the strength and courage to do so. It also provides a sense of independence as the person is now more comfortable with deeds like finding a job or establishing new healthy relationships. The freedom of choice is discovered by an addict who transitions back to mainstream life.
