GUTTING HOLIDAY STRESS

The holidays are some of the most stressful times of the year for most people but for those who have recently lost a loved one, the holidays are not only dreaded but the amount of stress increases exponentially.

Almost four years ago, Emily lost her husband to brain cancer and the holidays are still stressful for her. This time last year, Lynn’s father passed away, and her mother remains in ill 6

health. Our minds and bodies tend to remember stressful events around anniversaries; thus, stress around the holidays will automatically be higher if we have historical stressors around this time. So what can we do to help control the stress of the holidays and make sure that we are taking care of ourselves?

Stress seems to be here to stay but that doesn’t mean that we have to allow it to control our health and happiness. It’s important that we take control of stress and decide how much we allow it to affect us. We’ve all heard about deep breathing and learning to say no to taking on more than we can handle but have you ever thought to look to your gut as a means to control your stress? It’s actually a very great place to start!! Stress negatively impacts the gut and the gut can have a negative (or positive) impact on overall health and wellness including mental health, digestive health and joint health, to name a few. Basically, the health of the gut impacts your overall health and well being. Think of the gut as the first line of defense in our wellness. Stress changes gastrointestinal secretions, such as stomach acid and enzymes, that aid in the digestion and extraction of nutrients from our food.

Without these secretions we are unable to get the necessary nutrients to help us continue to function optimally. In other words, chronic stress leads to chronically low outputs of secretions which leads to

malabsorption which leads to malnutrition. We need to be providing our bodies with optimal nutrition during times of stress so our bodies’ can function effectively.

But stress doesn’t stop there.

It also affects the mucosal lining of the gut which helps to separate the trillions of microbes in our guts from our gut wall keeping proteins and pathogenic bacteria from harming us. Stress interferes with our bodies’ ability to repair the mucosal lining. When the mucosal barrier is damaged it leads to an increase in gut permeability (otherwise known as Leaky Gut). A Leaky Gut means that the gut lining, which is supposed to act as a filter to allow only those nutrients our body needs into our bloodstream, ends up allowing proteins, small food particles, and toxins into our bloodstream. This leads to inflammation and health issues.

As if that isn’t enough, stress affects our microbiome causing changes in the makeup of microbes. Our microbes form a symbiotic relationship with us but in order for that relationship

to work, we have to have a diverse amount of microbes in the right amounts. Research has found that stress can lead to an overgrowth of certain types of microbes and a decrease in the diversity of microbes. An overgrowth of certain types of microbes, called dysbiosis, leads to inflammation and an increased risk of being affected by pathogenic bacteria.

Finally, stress can lead to up to 4 times less blood flow to the digestive system which leads to a decrease in metabolism.

During times of stress, the body sends blood away from secondary systems and to the heart, lungs, brain, and muscles in the arms and legs so the body is prepared to take sudden action. An increase in sugary foods during the holidays combined with chronic stress leads to weight gain, low energy, and increased inflammation and can also lead to depression and anxiety.

Clearly controlling stress especially during the holidays is important for overall health. So what can you do?

Exercise. This doesn’t have to be anything major or strenuous.

You can do 7 minute exercises following an app (such as 7M Workout), do yoga or tai chi, or go for a walk. Walking in the woods, called forest bathing, has been shown to decrease stress and improve mood and increase feelings of wellbeing.

Gentle movement is good for not only improving gut motility but for improving mood as well.

Take a probiotic and include fermented foods in your diet.

Filling your gut with large amounts of the right kinds of microbes will help your body more effectively deal with stress. Talk to your health care provider about taking probiotics. When starting probiotics, there may be some side effects such as gas, bloating, or changes in gut motility. Sometimes skin issues may occur. This just means that the probiotics are working on cleaning out your gut by removing harmful bacteria.

However, if the symptoms are intense or continue for more than a week, discontinue taking the probiotics. Either that type of probiotic wasn’t right for you or there is something www.thecityinsightmag.com

else going on and you will need to see your doctor about it.

Fermented foods need to be low in sugar and say “Live and Active Cultures.”

Finally, it is important to pay attention to the gut-brain connection. What affects the gut affects the mind and vice versa. By reducing inflammation in the gut, you reduce inflammation in the brain. Having positive emotions improves your mood and is one way to reduce inflammation in the gut.

Laughing, meditating, chanting, singing, humming, and gargling are all effective ways to elevate emotions and improve the health of the brain and the gut.

Social connections are hugely important as well to the gut-brain connection. It can be so easy to isolate ourselves when we are grieving the loss of a loved one but this is a mistake. Make sure that you have plenty of face-toface interactions with people you enjoy being with. Find a grief support group that understands what you are going through and can help you through the holidays.

Taking care of your gut can help control your stress, improve your mood, and help you enjoy everything the holiday season has to offer - except for the stress!

20/20 VISION CHECKLIST – TAKE CARE OF YOUR MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT

The references to vision in the year 2020 are sure to abound over the next month and early into the new year. But, to see clearly in 2020, we offer a few tips to prepare. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list, but practical vision on what really matters. The list refers to the whole person, because the checklist covers mind, body, and spirit. Let’s see how many you can check off: • Forgive and let it go! Unforgiveness holds you hostage to the past.

Move forward with ease through forgiveness and unload.

• Get a fireproof, waterproof, and wind resistant security, home safety box for your important papers such as birth certificates, passports, marriage license, insurance policies, etc.

• Get a passport or check the expiration date on your current passport. Most out of the country trips require you to have a passport with an expiration of 6 months past your travel return date.

• Get your RealID. It’s required for everyone after October 1, 2020. It is necessary for airline travel, entrance to Federal buildings and offices.

• Check all bank accounts to determine correct contact information.

• Get a copy of your credit report from each major reporting agency: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.

Ensure there are no discrepancies.

• Get the birthdate of family and friends. Plug into your phone with reminders or write on your calendar to be sure to wish “happy birthday!”

• Don’t forget to review your benefits during healthcare Open Enrollment period.

• Gather all tax documents for 2019 and setup a box to capture all receipts for 2020. Plan your plan for financial well-being.

• Clean your email address book and unread email messages. Do the same for text messages.

• Clean out of date condiments in your refrigerator. Trash them.

• Organize your home. Tackle one room per day. Donate, shred, and gift items that need to go, so you can make space in your space. www.thecityinsightmag.com

• Complete a closet cleanse. This means donate unused clothes, shoes, and home goods to a local charity. If you have not worn/used in the past 18 months, consider donating for others to enjoy.

• Find a charity to volunteer throughout 2020. Giving back to the community helps others and yourself.

• Find your mission.

• Set goals and objectives for the next year. Make a business plan for your life.

• At the end of each day, write 3-5 things you are grateful for that day.

Start your gratitude journal today and continue into the new year. You will be surprised how many days you have more than 5 things to be grateful for.

• Discover your purpose. What brings you joy? Literally, what would you do if you could without any limitations, without fear, without any regrets?

At the end of your life, what do you want to be known for? Each day do something towards your purpose.

It doesn’t need to be something earth moving, just make a small shift daily. The earth moves continually; however, we don’t feel it. Keep moving forward. The evidence of your small movements will appear.

• Purchase a book of stamps and mail thank you cards to friends and family throughout 2020. Let them know how much you appreciate 33

them. This is a personal touch that means so much beyond a text message or email.

• Schedule a maintenance checkup with your medical provider. We ensure our vehicles and homes are well maintained, do no less for your body.

• Get documents for pets and secure in your home safety box.

• Finish your degree. Contact the last college attended and request a program plan analysis. Get a plan, work the plan, and complete your degree. You may be closer than you think!

• Donate to your favorite charity or find a cause that speaks to you.

• Encourage a young person. Speak positively and encourage them to achieve their dreams.

• Rest. Take a getaway trip in your own home. The holidays can be exhausting for many reasons. While you take care of others, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Have a personal bathroom retreat. Gather some jar candles, bubble bath, instrumental music, and your favorite beverage. Soak away all your cares and relax in your personal sanctuary.

Take this time to get ready for the new year.

North Carolina rapper Da Baby grew up living with his single mother and two older brothers; he remained close to his father.

Growing up, he was drawn to the street life in which he gave up focusing on rap full time in 2015.

He says ‘‘When I get bored with something, I'm done with it," he says matter-of-factly, @dababy chewing his burger. "Running around in the streets started feeling repetitive. I just felt like I mastered it."

SHINING A LIGHT ON RECOVERY

Within the United States alone, over 20 million individuals suffer from some form of drug or alcohol addiction. To give that statistic a bit more weight, that is about one out of every twelve of the people you pass on the street or in school or at work. Yet, we, as a society, still deem addiction as a rather taboo subject. We talk about it in hushed whispers or with a hint of judgement or shame in our voice.

With so many of us suffering with addiction, we should not be quietly whispering the term in the dark.

Instead, we should be shouting about it and making sure that those that suffer, know that there are places to get help. One such place is Recovery Communities of North Carolina.

Recovery Communities of North Carolina, or RCNC, is a nonprofit organization that promotes addiction recovery, wellness, and citizenship through advocacy, education, and support for those

suffering with (SUD) disorder. This wonderful organization was born from a need to shine a light on addiction and recovery. From that idea, the 1st Annual Capital Area Rally for Recovery was created, and it snowballed from there. After the success of the first rally, a second was planned but there was also the drive to take this further and to offer more. Thus, RCNC was born and soon joined the national recovery advocacy movement by becoming a member of Faces and Voices of Recovery’s Association of Recovery Community Organizations.

What RCNC does is promote and create a culture that supports recovery from substance use disorder. Not only do they place a focus on the individual in recovery, but also on the families, friends, and communities that are indirectly impacted. They want to ensure that those looking for help are given access to the highest

quality of care, services, and support needed to make recovery as easy as possible. RCNC also works to eliminate the stigma that surrounds addiction and recovery by speaking about it out loud and not shying away from making sure the community understands it is not something to be ashamed of.

HOW TO SAVE THOUSANDS ON YOUR WEDDING VENUE

You’ve researched wedding venues and are left with some questions like: “How can I save money on my wedding venue?’

“Why is this so expensive?”

“HOW MUCH do I have to pay for alcohol?!”

There are a million other questions you’re hit with during the process of wedding planning but I’m here to let you in on a little secret – you’re not alone! Every bride has some sort of question or dilemma when they are planning their wedding! In fact, some of them go through the entire wedding planning process and miss ways they can save a TON of money. But, that won’t be you, so let’s jump into my tips on how you can book a budget-friendly wedding and still look like a million bucks walking down the aisle!

Alcohol Do you want an open bar? Do you want to have a per-person drink limit? Will your guests have to pay for their own alcohol? When you’re negotiating the inevitable alcohol pricing, try to find a venue that will allow you to bring your own alcohol. If you can purchase booze over the time of your engagement (i.e. buying a bottle a week / month), you can save yourself a ton of money by controlling your costs and how much your guests drink. I have been to weddings where the bride and groom purchased enough alcohol to have an open bar!

Friday Wedding, Anyone?

Another great way to save a pile of cash is to choose a non-traditional day or month to get married at your venue. Find out the “off season” times at your venue and pick a day of the week, like Friday, to say your vows. Another option is to have an earlier wedding, a bride I know had a brunch wedding on a Saturday morning which saved her over $1,000!

If you do decide to plan your wedding on a non-traditional day/month, don’t be afraid to ask or extras! A lot of the time, venues are eager to add in some value add-ons that you won’t have to pay for! One bride I worked with was able to get a beautiful ceiling package at no additional cost to her, which she was ecstatic about. You never know what you can receive from your venue! When they do go above and beyond, a great way to say thank you is by reviewing and referring friends to their venue as well.

I hope these tips help you manage your budget a little better so that you can have the wedding you’ve always wanted without going broke!

Don’t be afraid to ask for other things, the worst they can say is no! This is your day and you should never walk away from a meeting feeling like you aren’t getting the most out of what you’re paying for.

It is often unfortunately seen as a disadvantage. Millennials are viewed as spoiled entitled techies with little understanding of how business moves. This edition of Preneur Pro Tips will feature the writing of a Millennial that has a brand of integrity.

Every business owner has life experiences that shape their worldview. This young college student has been a part of more than one instance of unfair treatment. It has caused them to scrutinize every situation and seek truth. Your brand must be genuine from the honest integrity of your heart. This Millennial attends a college that does not share his ethnicity. His brand of integrity 44

must speak louder than his skin color. Hear his words: I don’t embarrass easily but hearing my name so close to quitting time put me on edge.

“I’m not staying late again,” I mumbled under my breath.

I opened the door to find two familiar faces and they both looked grim. Did I do something? The pressure of authority is like being locked in a cage with a large cat, fully capable of taking you out. The word stung like a slap to the face, SLANDER. Now I remember.

A few nights back after staying late and exhausting my polite demeanor, I was eavesdropping on a cashier and customer talking about a wage gap yet using figures from the earnings gap. One is the unfair wage in which a woman gets paid less than www.thecityinsightmag.com

her male counterpart despite having the same experience, position and education. The other is a number crunched by calculating the take home pay of men versus women with no regard to part- or fulltime employment. A teachable moment; I interjected saying the difference and corrected her. Even the customer stayed a moment to learn more.

However, this cashier took offence to being corrected saying I was deliberately lying to make her look bad.

Slander is mostly handled in house, we sat in anticipation as the facts were straightened out. I would be lying if I told you I remembered a word of what she said in that office, but I remember the verdict.

My facts checked out and although telling the truth might have made her look/feel bad, it wasn’t a lie. For my honesty I was rewarded with a gift card to make up for my wasted time. All I could say was, “thank you for not siding with emotions.” A lesser man would have crumbled in fear, simply apologized and hoped for a lighter punishment.

A lesser company would have sided with the outraged party

to make peace. But, it is our integrity that holds weight.

Our willingness to strive to be better, more informed and just is what drives this nation and it economy.

This young man has earned the respect of his peers and managers because he stands with integrity. He does not expect what he is unwilling to give himself. His name is A’Donté Sharpe and he is pursuing a Sociology Degree with a minor in Creative Writing.
