Can Boys Sing?

Wednesday the 21st of March marked the third running of the annual ‘Boys Can Sing’ event at The City Academy, Hackney. The programme’s aim was to eradicate the stereotype that singing was only a female skill. Last Wednesday the boys took a stand, showing the world ‘hey, this is for me too’.

This year, 130 boys from six different schools across the borough joined in unity to perform an array of stylistically diverse choral pieces, ranging from an energetic rendition of Stormzy’s ‘Blinded By Your Grace’ to the all-time classic, Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’. Each year, the show is topped off with a special guest.

Stars in the past have included: Shlomo and VOCES8. This year we had the honour of having Jermaine Jackman, winner of The Voice UK 2014 perform for us.

Schools participating included: Daubeney Primary School, Skinners Academy, St. Monicas Primary School, Rushmore Primary School and Shoreditch Park Academy.

This was before he delivered an insightful talk to the young men, detailing his ‘The Voice’ journey, the hurdles he faced and his growth into the artist we know today. Jermaine then gave way for some especially confident performers to showcase their born talents, singing solo a song of their choice.

The evening carried a certain buzz nerves, excitement and electric charisma captivated each and every audience member as the boys gave the performance of their lives. “It was great” says Henry, a performer from The City Academy “We got a chance to meet and sing with Jermaine Jackman. He’s definitely someone to look up to”.

Catching up with Jermaine post- show, we asked what he thought of the day.

“The Boys Can Sing event is a perfect example of what happens when you meet opportunity with the extraordinary hidden talent we have in our Hackney schools. I went to the City Academy in Hackney with the intention to inspire these young men but it was I who left inspired. We need more projects like these in our schools to empower our young people.”

A Postcard from Wales...

Congratulations to Mila Stiling who won silver in the London Heathside Inter-Borough Challenge for running!

Congratulations to our Year 7 netball team who won the Year 7 Hackney Netball League and therefore got the chance to represent Hackney in the London Youth games. They won 4 of their 6 games!

As soon as we arrived in Ogwen it was all go. Students were immediately kitted out with all the clothing and equipment they would need for the next few days in the great outdoors. The first and second day were spent trekking around the national park and exploring the natural environment. Students marvelled at the natural beauty of the adverse weather conditions and enjoyed burying themselves in the snow, sledging, snowball fights and investigating icicles. Due to the weather, camping trips were cancelled , so students enjoyed three nights of hot food and warm beds.

The final day was by far the most challenging, but the beast from the east was no match for the students of TCAH. All three groups had a go at rock climbing on Holyhead Mountain , before scrambling to its summit in the middle of a snowstorm. A huge achievement for all involved with many a lesson learnt about resilience , positivity and team work .

City Conferencing Buisness students hosted their first conference in the sixth form centre for the Inspire! team.

The event was described as “very professional and well organised” on Twitter.

Our year 10 mathematicians competed in a ‘Maths Feast’ event, hosted by the Further Mathematics Support Programme at Raynes Park High School.

Students were among the highest achievers, demonstrating excellent professionalism and teamwork, finishing off the day nicely by winning the final round!

I am delighted to be appointed as the new Assistant Principal: Director for 14 – 19.

Selected year 10 high attainers visited the Guildhall, City of London for a City of London schools debate. Four of our students, Noah, Kai, Momeen and Linus, worked with other students to prepare a speech arguing for or against the motion that the ‘EU should have its own army.’

The boys did a great job of tackling questions, persuading the audience and entertaining their listeners. Kai Ogden’s group were the winning team, with Kai (pictured left) being awarded ‘The Most Convincing Debater.’

In Key Stage 3 all students participate in the Accelerated Reader programme to encourage them to read and enjoy the broad range of books available in the academy library. How does it work? Having read a book of their choice, a student takes a quiz which tests their knowledge of the book they’ve read, the story, and the characters.

If they pass the quiz they receive a certain number of points towards their personal reading target for the term.
