Founders’ Day 2016 This year, Founders’ Day was cause for a double celebration, as not only did it mark the Year 12 cohort’s achievement in their GCSE exams last year, but it also marked the opening of the brand new Sixth Form Centre, the Emmerson Sixth Form Centre.

The top students from each subject received special prizes in the prize giving, and a host of speakers were invited to talk to the students about their opportunities, and more generally about the school itself.

Prizes included the Fiona Woolf Music prize, and the Farriers Awards for English Language and Literature.

We hosted Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, who spoke about the opportunities ahead of the students, and her own experiences of university, coping with failure and achievement, and becoming a member of parliament.

Catherine McGuinness, our chair of governors also gave a speech, referencing the memories she had of the school

opening as well as how much the school, along with Mr Emmerson’s leadership and the original first cohort of students, has developed and exceeded expectations.

In her speech, she talked about the history and reputation of schools in Hackney in the past, and reminded the students that they should be proud of the school they attended, and the achievements they have made during their time here.

After the prize giving, student performances, and speeches, guests were invited over to the brand new Emmerson Sixth Form Centre - named after the former Principal Mr Emmerson, who oversaw the opening of the academy in 2009 - to watch the unveiling of the plaque, and see the new facilities.

The new Sixth Form Centre features classrooms, a study area, and canteen facilities exclusively for Sixth Form students to use.

Accelerated Reader of the Week

This term, the focus has been on student engagement in the classroom. This half term has seen Gardening Club, revision for mock exams, and rehearsals for concerts and drama performances.

Top merit winners this half term www.thecityacademy.org/students Congratulations to all of our top merit winners from the past few weeks. Students receive merits every day and rewards each term for outstanding behaviour, attainment, effort and positive contribution to the academy. These merits can then translate into prizes for individual achievements as well as awards to top attaining Houses, tutor groups and year groups.

Sports Results Girls football at the City Academy is forever growing. The girls have participated in the London Cup, Essex schools cup and the Hackney League tournaments.

The Year 7 and 8 girls in particular have stood out with their progress and success in a variety of games. Arsenal in the community coaches come in every Friday after school and they thoroughly enjoy it.

We have been entered into the premier league schools tournament in March where the winner gets to represent arsenal and play at Chelsea FC. The Year 7 boys football team have had an unbeaten start to the league, scoring 49 goals and conceding only 5

before Christmas. Their positional play and discipline is ever improving, which along with the natural pace and skill in the squad will undoubtedly lead to a successful second half of the season.

In netball, the year 7 girls’ commitment to training is excellent and the progression of specific skills has been excellent over the start of the term. The girls are keen to learn and continually improve which we hope to take forward into our first game of the season.

The year 10 and 11 team had another successful start to their Hackney League and London League with some impressive wins. They have their last league game against Mossbourne Academy which will determine where they will finish in the league this year.

WINTER letters Our annual Christmas competition kicked off on 1 December and every student in Key Stage 3 was asked to make a 3D letter from the word ‘WINTER’. A selection was then used on the academy Christmas card (pictured) which was on sale during the Christmas Concert, and all the money

raised donated to WaterAid. Entries could be any size and made from any material, and are now on display in the academy foyer. Staff will be picking a winner shortly!

PSA Second Hand Uniform Shop Thanks to the parents/carers in the PSA, who have started up a regular second hand uniform shop, selling academy uniform at a lower price. The sales have been a massive success so far, and further sales will be held throughout the year. The next one will be Friday 13 January, from 4 - 6 pm.

Royal Albert Hall After being invited to sing at the Hackney Gala, held at the Hackney Empire, an event that celebrates and showcases biggest musical talents from Hackney Borough schools, our core choir qualified to sing twice at the Royal Albert Hall. Their performances were part of the Primary Proms and Music For Youth.

The Christmas Concert Our annual Christmas Concert took place this December, featuring well known Christmas songs and dramatic performances. Both our Boys Choir and Girls Choir performed, we heard an original piece by Sixth Former Josh Owusu, and we were treated to extracts from this year’s GCSE drama production - The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. The staff choir also performed, singing a rendition of War Is Over by John Lennon. Thanks to the Creative Studies Department for supporting this yearly production.

Year 11 and Sixth Form Parent Day Wednesday 4 January, 1.30 pm - 8 pm.

We begin the term with a Parent Day for year 11 and Sixth Form students. Subject teachers will be on hand in the Sports Hall to meet with parents throughout the day. Students are expected to attend in full uniform (Sixth Form - smart business wear, as per the academy’s normal expectations).

All Students Return to School Thursday 5 January, 8.20 am.

Students return back to school, starting at the usual time of 8.20 am until school finishes after Additional Studies, at 4.45 pm.

PSA Second Hand Uniform Sale Friday 13 January, 4 pm - 6 pm.

The PSA have started holding regular sales of the second hand uniform, on the second Friday of each month (only during term time).

They will be holding the sale from 4 pm until 6 pm - if you would like to purchase some uniform, please turn up during these times.

PSA Subject Evening Wednesday 25 January Each term, parents/carers, students and families are invited to attend a taster class. Thank you to music for hosting the last event.

The next Subject Evening will be with the computing and ICT department.
