Dear Member, As I write this, my own campus (the University at Albany) recently held commencement. I love commencement, a true embodiment of endings and beginnings.

A few short weeks ago, I too experienced my own “commencement” of sorts as I concluded my term as National President of Omicron Delta Kappa and our next National President was elected in Grand Rapids, Mich. during the 2016 National Convention.

Beginnings…I was initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa in 1998 as a member of the chartering class for the Alfred University Circle. It seems like a lifetime ago. In the 18 years since my initiation, I’ve gotten married to my college sweetheart (Chrissy, who’s also an O∆K member!), we’ve had three children (Katerina, Victoria, and Anastasia), we’ve earned advanced degrees and progressed in our respective careers (mine in higher education and hers in health care).

During that time, I’ve witnessed O∆K move forward too. As my time as National President draws to a close this summer, I can’t help but look forward.

We must continue to do more for our members, for our circles, and for research and scholarship in and around the topic of “leadership,” and we must remain steadfast in spreading the O∆K Idea of honoring and advancing collegiate leadership at as many colleges and universities as possible.

Our long-range plan, O∆K 2024: Leading for Our Second Century, which is featured in this issue of The Circle, is the road map that will be followed by my successor and future members of the Society Board of Directors. The reason that I’m confident that this plan will be embraced for the next eight years is because it was developed with our organization’s consistent mission, vision, and values at its core.

The plan has ten important elements that I encourage you to consider and embrace.

Among the many elements of the plan, supporting the growth of membership and providing for even greater opportunities for member engagement at the collegiate and post-collegiate levels are central to our Society’s long-term viability and relevance.

Endings… I reflect on serving Omicron Delta Kappa in many leadership roles over these past 18 years and how this experience has been among my greatest joys. Serving our Society as National President, especially at this historic time, has truly been among my greatest honors. I have benefited personally and professionally from the many colleagues, friends, and mentors that have stood beside me as have worked to move O∆K forward.

Thank you for allowing me to serve.

Here’s looking forward to many more commencements in the years ahead for O∆K and for each of us.

4 WAYS TO STAY SAFE AROUND A FLOODED ROAD When rains swell rivers and streams, these tips may help you stay safe and dry.

Brought to you by Nationwide Insurance® April showers might bring May flowers, but they also trigger hazards on the road. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that 620,000 crashes across the country occurred in rainy conditions in 2009, the most recent year for which annual data has been published. “ This represents millions of dollars in damage that could be avoided,” says auto expert Dean Fisher, owner of CARSTAR, a leading auto body repair company. “Just by slowing down and being more cautious, drivers can dramatically reduce their chances of being in a costly wreck.”

Fisher offered the following guidelines to help drivers safely navigate wet weather and flooded roads: 1 Create a pre-drive checklist. Take time to check your vehicle in dry weather. Replace old, brittle wiper blades and make sure light bulbs are working properly. Keep your headlights on at all times while you’re driving in the rain, regardless of how well you can see. “ Anytime you use your wipers, you need to have your headlights on,” Fisher says. “It helps you see better in rainy, foggy or overcast conditions, and allows other drivers to see you.”

2 Drive cautiously. Keep more than the standard “3-second” distance between you and the vehicle ahead and try to steer in the existing tire tracks to maximize traction in wet conditions. Also, avoid using cruise control, because it reduces the amount of control you have over the vehicle. “ Stay in the middle lanes because water tends to pool on the outside,” Fisher says. “When you need to stop or slow, avoid a skid by braking lightly and not locking the wheels. Maintain mild pressure on the brake pedal. Or, if possible, take your foot off the accelerator to slow down.”

3 Avoid low-lying areas. Don’t drive on a road if you can’t see the ground through the water. Be extra careful in areas where floodwaters tend to rise. “This includes low-lying roads adjacent to streams,” Fisher says, “and those that dip under rail or highway bridges.”

Avoiding deep water isn’t simply the safe thing to do—it’s a way to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape. “Flooded conditions can damage an automobile electrical system and leave all kinds of dirt, rust and mildew deposits,” Fisher says.

4 Hydroplaning hints. Hydroplaning happens when water in front of the tires builds up faster than the vehicle’s weight can push it aside, prompting a complete loss of traction and control. Factors such as speed and tire tread depth play a part, so reduce your speed in wet weather, and check the condition of your tires throughout the year. If you still find yourself hydroplaning, don’t panic. “ Don’t brake or turn suddenly,” Fisher says. “Instead, ease your foot off the gas until the vehicle slows and you can feel traction again. If you skid, turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid to recover control, then gently straighten the wheel.”

Virginia “Ginny” B. Edwards is a 1977 initiate of the University of Kentucky Circle and became a member of the O∆K Foundation Board of Trustees in June 2016. Ginny was the president of Editorial Projects in Education from March 1997 to July 2016. She is credited with energetically evolving EPE and Ed Week over the years from a print-only publication to a thriving, financially successful 24/7 digital news operation.

Tell us about your tenure as the CEO of Editorial Projects in Education.

After 27 rewarding years as the editor-in-chief of Education Week, and more than 19 years as the president of the parent nonprofit Editorial Projects in Education, I announced my departure from EPE at the end of July.

I had a tremendous – if, at times, daunting – run.

Back in the 1990s, when many newspapers were still debating whether to make the leap to “the World Wide Web,” Education Week enthusiastically embraced digital media as an opportunity to expand the reach of its journalism and inform the national discourse on pre-K-12 education. Since launching edweek.org in 1996, Ed Week has never looked back.

Today, EPE engages readers through a robust presence on social media, via broadcast-news segments produced for PBS NewsHour, and online videos.

You have been active with the Student Press Law Center. Why do you believe the work of the SPLC is important?

Journalists make a real difference. I truly believe that.

Journalists are crucial to the functioning of our democracy.

It takes dogged reporting that is constantly leveraging new tools and a steadfast commitment to producing high-quality content – in whatever form it takes. And it takes journalists who assiduously assert and preserve their independence.

The SPLC has been devoted to educating high school and college journalists about the rights and responsibilities embodied in the First Amendment. Among other priorities, the SPLC helps to protect students’ freedom of expression and provides opportunities for students to use their voices to influence public policy.

In the 21st century, few skills are more important than information literacy, or the ability to use critical-thinking skills to discern fact from fiction. With ever-more sources of information available and, therefore, more competition for the limited attention span of news consumers, connecting with communities and engaging with them as directly as possible becomes a crucial factor in the survival of journalism as we know it.

Young people are key to showing the way.

Q&A

Ginny Edwards write, write, write. Working for student media outlets can be an important first step, and internships can help build an early foundation.

What is the one thing you learned as the editor of the student newspaper at Kentucky that you still embrace today?

I learned the importance of setting high standards for the work and encouraging a workplace culture that values the contributions of all.

In addition to being on the newspaper staff at UK, what else where you involved in on campus?

I was on campus from 1973 - 77 and worked at The Kernel for all four years. At the time, the five-days-a-week paper had the fourth-largest circulation among morning papers in Kentucky. The bottom line is that, when I wasn’t working at the paper (or generally going to classes), I was socializing with others in my newspaper crowd. Let’s just say I excelled at making sure to have fun.

What is your personal philosophy of leadership?

Be intentional. Be humane. Foster a collaborative culture even as everyone is treated as an individual. And, all the while, communicate.

What advice would you give to aspiring journalists, writers, and editors?

Devote yourself to being a full-time student of good reporting and writing. That means read, read, read and

Even as I’m painfully aware of the troubled landscape defining journalism, I enthusiastically encourage talented young people to enter the fray, with one important caveat: make sure your eyes are wide open.

These days, it’s important that students interested in journalism learn the fundamental skills of the craft – research, reporting, and multimedia storytelling. But it’s also important that they develop an understanding of the digital technologies and business principles reshaping the media field.

Who is a leader you admire and why?

The late Robert Sexton, the long-time executive director of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.

I first met Bob in 1973 when I was doing an article for The Kernel about a UK program he ran that was designed to connect students to the world of work. I then covered Bob and the Prichard Committee as a statewide education reporter for The Courier-Journal in Kentucky in the mid’80s, and, in 1997, he joined the EPE Board of Trustees.

Even as Bob pushed tirelessly for school improvement in Kentucky, he always pursued the work with civility and in a reasoned way. He coupled a well-articulated vision with the pragmatic skills it takes to push for change, and he proved that keeping a long view ultimately wins out over quick fixes.

The education reforms he helped put in place live on as a tribute to his life.

esearch 1: Doctoral universities, as defined by the Carnegie classification system, are those institutions that have the highest research activity of all colleges and universities. They award at least 20 research doctoral degrees during any given year. They are also big, complex, messy places—often including professional schools, largely autonomous research centers, and big-time intercollegiate athletics. Dr. Joseph Johnson, president emeritus of the University of Tennessee, knows this fact as well as anyone.

Johnson summarizes the challenges of leading a big, complex institution with three points. First, the size of the University of Tennessee is challenging because it has more than 50,000 students.

Second, it is difficult to balance the complexity of the teaching and learning experience, research, and outreach and recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students. Finally, he knows that a president is challenged to balance needs, expectations, and complaints from different audiences, including students, faculty, alumni, employees, donors, governors, and legislators.

Johnson, describing his tenure as UT’s president, said, “When leading an institution such as the University of Tennessee, the administration must have the ability to be flexible while adhering to high ethical standards. Things change, and people have to change. But as a leader, one cannot ever violate ethical standards in periods of flexibility.”

Johnson, who earned his undergraduate degree at BirminghamSouthern College, started working at the University of Tennessee in 1958. “When I finished my Master of Public Administration, I went into state government. I never originally planned to have a career in higher education. I began at the University of Tennessee as an administrator and did not intend to become the president. I was the executive assistant to a fantastic president and then moved into the role of vice president for development, where I learned the art of building relationships with alumni and donors while also balancing lobbying and campus planning. In 1970, I became the chancellor of the Center for Health Sciences. Serving as chancellor proved to be a truly unique experience because I knew little about dealing with research, teaching, and taking care of patients. I also served as the executive vice president and the vice president for business and finance at Tennessee, and as a result of these years of service, I was exposed in all administrative roles.”

“The experiences in the administration at the university taught me that the real heart of a university is what goes on in the classroom.

As a leader, I learned to respect the role of quality educators and

the integrity at the heart of the university.” Johnson saw the enterprise from all levels and perspectives—the good, the bad, and the simply complicated.

Having served at the University of Tennessee for more than half a century, Johnson has seen numerous changes. He explains that one of the most notable changes in higher education is the drop in public and state funding as a percentage of total resources. He noted that public institutions are more dependent on tuition than they have ever been, and they have seen a real need to increase private funding.

Johnson also observed that students and parents have a greater focus on the academic experience than they did when he began his career in higher education. He commented, “Students are coming to us better prepared for college than they were 40 years ago. And, our admissions standards have changed quite a bit. Youngsters come to us better prepared out of high school; as a result, they have a higher expectation of us. We see a greater focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education because of increased pressure to get meaningful, well-paying jobs.”

After completing an undergraduate degree, many young people aspire to become presidents of colleges and universities. Johnson remarked on preparing oneself for a leadership position at that level. One option to prepare for a collegiate leadership position is to place one’s focus on education first.

He recommends that the person pursue a doctoral degree or the highest academic credential in his or her field. After completing the highest level of education, the person could find an academic position and rise through the ranks to become a president. Johnson admits that he took a non-traditional approach in which he began a career in higher education before completing his education.

In addition to pursuing a formal education, Johnson points out that one characteristic that is required of a president is leadership. Some leadership comes naturally, and some leadership lessons are learned. “My personal philosophy about leadership has one essential point: relationships. A leader must be able to build a team. Within the team, a leader will need to be able to share responsibility and trust the people on the team. Finally, you must, as a leader, hold your colleagues accountable. But, the key to success as a leader is to build strong relationships.”

“If I could offer one piece of advice to young leaders, I would encourage them to get an excellent education and learn how to relate to all sorts of people. In addition to education, I would also recommend finding a top-quality mentor who will be honest in supporting you on your leadership journey.” ●

I

Omicron Delta Kappa’s Long Range Plan

n 2014, as O∆K celebrated its100th anniversary, national leadership renewed our focus on developing the campus leaders of today into the community leaders of tomorrow.

The leadership team appointed a planning commission to develop a long range plan, OΔK 2024: Leading for Our Second Century, to guide our organization’s future.

The commission was chaired by then OΔK National President Michael Christakis of the University at Albany and vice-chaired by OΔK Foundation President, Russell Chambliss.

The other committee members included Darwin Jones, Michelle Burke, David Chambliss, Melvinia King, and Parker Vascik; Executive Director Tara Singer staffed the committee.

With months of research, discussion, and analysis of member needs, the committee established ten strategic priorities, specific initiatives for each priority, and benchmarks for evaluating progress. In the 2014-16 biennium, OΔK leadership concentrated on selected initiatives discussed on the next page.

O∆K Man of Vision Mike Christakis

As the principal architect of O∆K 2024: Leading for Our Second Century, Immediate Past National President Michael Christakis has had many years to think about the future and direction of the Society. A 1998 initiate and founding member of the Alfred University Circle, he first formally served as the circle’s chartering president. He was elected Province I Student Director in 1999 and O∆K’s first-ever National Student Vice President in 2000. Mike went on to serve as National Vice President from 2002-12 before becoming National President in 2012. Mike also served a number of years as a trustee of the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation.

Some of Our Other Favorite Super Heroes This year, several of O∆K’s highly dedicated members of the Foundation Board of Trustees completed their terms and decades of service to the organization. The Foundation has had only seven presidents; Sally Jones Hill (1996-2002), Calder Sinclair (2002-06), and Gene Vance (2010-14) each have graciously served at least two terms.

Sally Jones Hill, a 1988 initiate of the Auburn University Circle, has led numerous fundraising efforts through the years.

Notably, she led the campaigns to name O∆K’s national headquarters lobby in honor of Auburn’s Dean Jim Foy and to expand scholarships for Auburn Circle members through the Katherine Cater Endowed Fund.

Calder Sinclair, a 1971 initiate of the Emory University Circle, brought his knowledge of best practices to the Foundation as a professional fundraising consultant. He championed significant revisions to the Foundation’s gift acceptance policy, coordinated numerous Atlanta-based fundraising efforts, and helped refine the planned giving program.

Gene Vance, a 1985 initiate of the Transylvania University Circle, has done everything from guiding and refining the Foundation’s investment policies to helping secure many of the gifts to purchase the national headquarters building.

Through super-hero efforts of leadership, devotion, personal contributions, and a passion for enhancing the experiences of collegiate members, each of these individuals has made a tremendous difference for the future of Omicron Delta Kappa.

Increase membership and enhance member engagement in Omicron Delta Kappa.

The Membership and Circle Standards Committee led the Society’s efforts to (1) increase membership in O∆K and grow the number of annual initiates to 12,000 and (2) increase the number of stable circles to 320 through expansion efforts. Between FY 2014 - 16, 20 new circles were chartered or re-chartered to bring the total active circles to 300 and membership in the last fiscal year to 8,044.

“Enhancing the member experience and supporting circle operations are the primary focus of O∆K. Through each circle, members have the opportunity to grow as leaders, facilitate the development of others, and embrace O∆K’s values on their leadership journeys.”

Advance leadership education by providing opportunities for members to enhance their leadership skills and conduct leadership research.

A Research and Curriculum Development Committee was established in 2014 to coordinate leadership education. The committee primarily worked to (1) develop a webinar or online educational series and (2) deliver current leadership resources through an online leadership hub. O∆K offered webinars in 2015 and 2016 in conjunction with NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

“O∆K not only recognizes collegiate leaders; our Society is also actively engaged in conducting research about student leadership and providing resources to support leadership educators. It is our mission to explore the best practices and programs for truly developing the campus leaders of today into the community leaders of tomorrow.”

Create strategic alliances and partnerships with organizations to provide experiential learning opportunities within the five phases of collegiate leadership celebrated by O∆K for collegiate members and recent graduates.

The Strategic Alliances Committee continued to explore opportunities to provide collegiate members and recent graduates with post-baccalaureate experiences to enhance career and leadership development. Most recently, the committee has concentrated its work on (1) exploring an alliance with City Year and (2) expanding O∆K’s existing partnership with the Coro Fellows Program. This year, we reached an agreement with City Year to engage O∆K members in the organization’s program at a number of colleges and universities in the southeast. In addition, the Coro Fellows Program agreed to waive its $75 application fee for O∆K members in all of its regions.

“We are proud to offer collegiate members several opportunities to lead. Teach for America provides a post-baccalaureate opportunity in the area of scholarship; City Year and Coro provide opportunities in service. Our objective is to develop partnerships connected to the other phases of leadership celebrated by O∆K including athletics, communications, and arts.”

Strengthen and leverage existing programs of promise and distinction.

The National Advisory Council continues to lead the effort to review O∆K programs with an emphasis on identifying the strengths of the programs, aspects of programs and services that need improvement, and the role which the programs play in the greater value of O∆K membership. In particular, the NAC made a number of recommendations on revising the initiation ritual, recognition and support of faculty officers, and circle workshop programming for the convention.

“As the ‘voice from the trenches,’ the members of the National Advisory Council have helped inform decisions made by the national headquarters staff as well as the Society Board of Directors. The NAC members work to improve the member and circle experience.”

Diversify and increase general revenue by identifying and develop opportunities to increase revenues from sources other than dues and fundraising.

Initiation fees remain the primary source of funds for supporting O∆K programs and member services. Since 2014, the Finance Committee has led the effort increase revenue from other sources including merchandise and advertising.

Increase resources from charitable sources to support both Society and Foundation operations.

The Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation Board of Trustees direct the efforts to secure the financial resources to provide scholarships, leadership development programs, and recognition of members. Between 2014 and 2016, the Foundation has made (1) expanding the planned giving program of O∆K (the Heritage Society) and (2) planning for a comprehensive campaign its primary focus. Develop an engagement and communications strategy to enhance connections with members and enhance organizational image and awareness.

Coordinating communications with individuals in all membership categories is a primary responsibility of the national headquarters staff. Between 2014 and 2016, the staff has focused on (1) evaluating and modifying the engagement and communications strategies for collegiate members and (2) developing a targeted communications plan for honoris causa initiates of OΔK. Last year, headquarters staff launched the Leading Today, Leading Tomorrow newsletter, which shares leadership insights and skill development, as well articles on the needs and concerns of emerging leaders. Headquarters developed a special welcome package for honoris causa initiates.

Since its creation in 2014, the Student Advisory Board, which includes current collegiate members and recent graduates, championed the establishment of online career services including the creation of a mentoring program. The SAB has also advocated for the development of a circle officer network and a communications platform to help inform prospective employers of the value of membership in O∆K. “Service in, as well as service from, Omicron Delta Kappa does not end with graduation. Additional opportunities for ongoing member engagement will continue to be explored and developed.”

This year, national leaders discussed and ultimately officially introduced our newest priority to (1) provide content about multicultural leadership to O∆K members through various O∆K publications and (2) recruit pools of diverse candidates for headquarters staff, national volunteer corps, and circle leadership. This priority is championed by the Diversity and Inclusion Work Group.

Staff developed a three-part series about diversity and inclusion for The Circle magazine. The fall issue examined the role of O∆K members in the integration of higher education; the winter issue covered the involvement of members in the development of Title IX; and the current issue looks at higher education leaders involved in the LGBTQ community.

“In addition to assisting with the development of the diversity and inclusion theme for the 2015-16 issues of The Circle, the D&I Work Group also recommended changes the 2015 O∆K Initiation Handbook to ensure that the language was accommodating for all individuals and encouraged the establishment of circles at HBCU institutions. These efforts will remain an important focus for Omicron Delta Kappa.”

Dr. Glenn Hilburn A True

Gentleman of O∆K

lenn Hilburn, who served Omicron Delta Kappa as its national president from 1978 to 1984 and again from 1985 to 1986, passed away in early June at the age of 86.

During his tenure, the O∆K Foundation was established, O∆K’s first executive director was selected, and membership grew.

Dr. Hilburn, a native of Plain Dealing, La., earned his bachelor’s degree from Centenary College of Louisiana and a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He was initiated into the Centenary College Circle in 1951.

Later, in 1962, Dr. Hilburn helped charter the Baylor University Circle and served as faculty advisor or faculty secretary for the next 38 years.

Before coming to Baylor, Dr. Hilburn worked as a research and analytical chemist and served as a pastor for churches in Texas and Arkansas. He joined the Baylor faculty in 1961 and was a member of the religion faculty for 40 years. For 15 years Dr. Hilburn was the chairperson of the department. In addition to helping to bring O∆K to Baylor, he also played a significant role in securing a Phi Beta Kappa chapter for the school.

Dr. Hilburn was devoted to the Baylor University Circle, and a circle-specific scholarship fund has already been established in his name. A tribute to his service is included in the inscription of the O∆K monument at Baylor. The Dallas Baptist

University Circle is known as the Glenn Hilburn Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa because of the influence Dr. Hilburn had on the founding members of that circle.

In addition to serving as national president, Dr. Hilburn was the editor of The Circle for a number of years. He was presented with the 2000 Laurel Crowned Circle Award in recognition of his scholarship, leadership, and service to O∆K. Dr. Hilburn would occasionally call the national headquarters to offer historical background information and share stories. He was incredibly helpful to Michael Nichols in preparing The Laurel Crowned Circle: Omicron Delta Kappa and 100 Years of Leadership.

In 2014, Dr. Hilburn attended the Biennial Convention and Centennial Celebration in Lexington, Va. Those in attendance appreciated hearing his stories about the growth of O∆K, the people who have led it through the years, and his long career in higher education.

Dr. Hilburn and his late wife, Martell Hilburn, were active in First Baptist Church of Waco.

Dr. Hilburn is survived by son Kelly Hilburn and his wife, Sherrie, and stepson Sheridenn White; son Jeff Hilburn and his wife, Nancy; grandsons Dylan Hilburn and Sean Hilburn; granddaughter Haley Anderson and her husband, Jessie; granddaughter Taylor Hilburn; and great-granddaughter Zoey Hilburn. ●

ven after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage in 2015, a strange dilemma persisted. An LGBTQ person could marry legally in all states; however, that person could then be fired from his or her job, denied credit, or refused service by a business. The Supreme Court’s historic ruling was seen as a hopeful and positive step by many individuals. Nevertheless, as David Stacy, government affairs director for the Human Rights Campaign, noted, “With limited or no federal protections, an LGBT person can get legally married in most states but then be evicted from an apartment and denied a home loan.”

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) has remarked on remaining challenges for LGBTQ individuals in American society. In support of the Equality Act (last introduced in 2015), he said, “The time has come for us as a nation to be bolder and better in ensuring full rights for the LGBT community.

Every person deserves to live free from fear of discrimination, regardless of who they are or whom they love.” The Equality Act amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity among the prohibited categories of discrimination or segregation in places of public accommodation. Merkley said, “Enacting the Equality Act will bring us another significant step forward in our nation’s long march towards inclusion and equality. It will extend the full promise of America to every American.”

In extending the “full promise of America,” several Omicron Delta Kappa members have been on the front lines to address discrimination in their communities, provided leadership and role models for the LGBTQ community and others, and guided O∆K to become a more diverse and inclusive organization.

Confronting and Recognizing Discrimination Ricardo Benavidez, a 2013 initiate of the Grand Valley State University Circle and a former GVSU student government president, said, “For the longest time, I held the notion that being gay didn’t affect my life. I didn’t feel as if I were treated differently or had diminished opportunities as compared to my heterosexual peers … However, as I have gotten older and taken in more experiences —my time as a college student and my short Ricardo Benavidez stint thus far in the professional world—I have come to realize that while my initial understanding of how my sexual orientation affected my experiences was based in partial truth, it was also slightly askew from reality.”

diversity Benavidez went on to say, “I wasn’t exempt from the effects of society’s perception and actions towards the LGBTQ community, but there was a tandem subconscious and conscious effort to mitigate those effects. As I reflected I realized (and [continue to] do so even today) that my actions were greatly impacted by how I thought others perceived me. The way I spoke, the way I laughed, my posture, the topics of conversation I allowed myself to delve into, and even my leadership style have been, and continue to be, shaped by the way I feel my peers and those with whom I interact perceive me.”

Dr. Joseph Bertolino, a 1992 initiate of the East Stroudsburg University Circle and current president of Southern Connecticut State University, noted that while societal expectations have changed some, when he speaks to audiences about his life and the ongoing discussion of LGBTQ issues, it is often “difficult for people to conceptualize the challenges” he and his partner Dr. Joseph Bertolino faced early in their careers.

Key elements in leadership include personal responsibility, involvement, and self-awareness directly relates to how we accept and treat each other. As Benavidez stated, “The feat of creating greater equity and inclusion is daunting … Small accomplishments and acts will build together a society that appreciates difference and strives for inclusion, resulting in greater equity across the board. Harkening back to the idea that small changes over time will leave a greater impact, if you begin to make these changes, you’ll see a shift in your way of thinking and your actions. You will become more aware

of injustice in all forms and, hopefully, you will work to eradicate them. We won’t change systems if we don’t know that they are broken. Bringing awareness to yourself and your surroundings is paramount to the passion that great leaders feel for their cause.”

experiences for everyone involved. When students organize speaker series, film series with panel discussions, or art or musical events involving LGBTQ people, culture, and issues of concern, it is powerful, relevant, and the kind of educational moment that leaves participants forever changed.”

Creating Greater Understanding

Whitney also suggested that awareness and responsibility help create the right climate for conversations about change. She said, “The first thing each of us should do is to take full responsibility for ourselves as members of society. Each of us has a responsibility to learn about, appreciate, and respect one another. My hope is that each student at the university will choose to live each day committed to equity and inclusion. My Dr. Karen Whitney (right) with her hope is that each student spouse Dr. Peggy Apple. will develop an awareness that leads them to engage and work toward eliminating bias on their part as well as among others throughout their life. I know I ask a great deal of students, but I believe it is worthy of ‘the ask.’”

Bertolino indicated that he believes today’s students are coming to college much more familiar and comfortable with gay and transgendered people. He said that many students come from a variety of family types, and as time passes, future generations will talk about these issues more easily. He said, “Students today are already engaged in the conversation concerning equity and acceptance. By the time students reach college age, a number have already engaged in the educational process.”

Benavidez agreed, adding that, “today’s youth are simply more vocal about their experiences—the good, the bad, and the ugly. The younger generation of today has more transparency afforded to it than their older peers. This allows them to have more awareness surrounding LGBTQ issues. The conversations are present in the media, in politics, and in education. Regardless of their political and ideological leanings, students have more exposure to these topics. If you think even twenty years back, our society did not have such open and in-depth discussions regarding the LGBTQ community. These conversations were guarded and met with opposition. The tides are definitely changing on the topic. Such as with technology, conversations surrounding LGBTQ issues have been with today’s students since they were young; it doesn’t feel new or out of place.”

Bertolino suggested that college campuses often become the site for this sort of interaction and dialogue, with students he has encountered often pushing for initiatives and education.

He stated that people can “engage in real, substantive conversations on campuses,” that campuses have the “opportunity to provide space where these conversations, difficult as they may be, can happen. Yet the common theme comes back to the willingness to educate and engage in the conversation and to listen … and to do so in a productive manner.”

Dr. Karen Whitney, who was initiated into the University of Texas at San Antonio Circle in 1999 and is the current president of Clarion University, shared similar observations. She said, “College students continue to be more aware of LGBTQ issues and want to have the conversations because they are more likely to personally know someone who is LGBTQ. In fact, this generation of college students is not only more open but is more likely to have parents, grandparents, and other loved ones who are LGBTQ. Once the political becomes personal, there is great relevance and importance to engaging in a conversation.”

She found that “student-driven events can be transformative

O∆K’s Diversity and Inclusion Efforts Throughout Omicron Delta Kappa’s nearly 102-year history, the organization has evolved to initiate, welcome, and embrace an ever-diversifying membership. As a leader in the higher education landscape, it is crucial that O∆K be well positioned to be an organization that is inclusive and supports the further development of leaders to lead in a world that becomes more diverse with each passing day. With its far-reaching network of members and circles, Omicron Delta Kappa has an avenue to reach many people.

Ben Williams, a student member-at-large of O∆K’s Society Board of Directors and a 2011 initiate of the Georgia State University Circle, stated, “O∆K is uniquely positioned to lead these conversations with our focus on leadership and supporting our collegiate members. The culture and demographics of our country are changing and as a leadership honor society we can support our members’ learning in these areas. We are going to intentionally integrate topics of diversity, inclusion, and multicultural leadership into our programs, moving forward ranging from sessions at our conventions, to drive-in conferences, to potentially exploring other avenues to support our circles and staff.”

O∆K’s Diversity and Equal Opportunity Statements As chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Work Group, Williams and his fellow volunteers reaffirmed O∆K’s diversity statement and recommended to the Society Board of Directors that some new language be added, which was approved by the board. The current versions of the statements are as follows:

The O∆K Idea affirms and promotes openness and inclusiveness among all people.

Membership selection shall be free of bias so that all qualified will be considered equally for membership.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Omicron Delta Kappa does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, biological sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran’s status, or genetic information in its programs and activities, membership, and with regard to employment.

In April 2015, O∆K National President Michael Christakis appointed a Diversity and Inclusion Work Group comprised of members of the Society Board of Directors and chaired by Williams. Christakis charged the group “with identifying processes and policies that support the involvement and engagement of a multicultural membership. The work group will evaluate the current benchmarks for diversity and inclusion found within Omicron Delta Kappa at all levels of the organization. In addition, the work group will develop programmatic recommendations related to topics of leading in a diverse world and supporting leadership development in marginalized student populations. Included in these programmatic recommendations will be suggestions on adding specific multicultural content to convention, drive-in, and online resources as well as to staff and board member orientation programs.”

In addition to reaffirming the organization’s diversity and equal opportunity statements (see sidebar), the work group presented a set of convention site selection guidelines that were adopted by the Society Board of Directors. The guidelines recommend that O∆K identify cities where comprehensive non-discrimination policy that provides protection for attendees based on race, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, veteran status, ability, and all other protected classes to provide for a positive convention experience for all of our members.

The organization will also look for host communities that have a comprehensive nondiscrimination policy that provides protection for attendees based on race, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, veteran status, ability, and all other protected classes. Lastly, in determining locations for future conventions, O∆K will seek to partner with host institutions that have a comprehensive non-discrimination policy that provides protection for attendees based on race, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, veteran’s status, ability, and all other protected classes. Also, O∆K will work to ensure that accommodations support the needs of attendees related to gender, identity, and ability.

Gradually, by raising public awareness through education and dialogue, people in the LGBTQ community, including O∆K members, have begun to receive some greater acceptance. As Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), one of the authors of the Equality Act, stated, “Brave men and women in every generation throughout America’s history have mustered the conviction to fight for freedom and equality against all odds—from abolitionists and suffragettes to civil rights activists. With each fight for justice, ordinary people have challenged our nation to become a more perfect union.” ● The Circle • Summer 2016 | 21

O∆K Members become University Presidents Richardson Named Bishop State Community College President Last fall, on October 10, 2015, Valerie Richardson was named the permanent president of Bishop State Community College in Ala. after serving as the interim president. Richardson previously served as vice president at Gadsden State Community College. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degree from Jacksonville State University where she was initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa in 1997. She earned her doctorate degree from the University of Alabama. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her commitment to students and leadership.

Jensen Appointed Illinois Wesleyan University President Eric Jensen began his tenure as the 19th president of Illinois Wesleyan University on November 1, 2015. Prior to his appointment at IWU, he was the provost at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. where he was inducted into that institution’s circle in 2014.

Previously, Jensen was on the faculty at The College of William and Mary where he was noted for working with the College Board to develop and implement its Financial Aid Strategy Tool (FAST), which enables participating institutions to individually tailor financial aid offers to admitted students. Jensen earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Cordano Announced as Gallaudet University President Roberta “Bobbi” Cordano became the new president at Gallaudet University on January 1, 2016. When her appointment was announced she was described as a “transformational leader who is the right person at the right time for Gallaudet.” President Cordano graduated from the University of Wisconsin’s law school and from Beloit College where she was initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa in 1986. Prior to coming to Gallaudet, Cordano was vice president of programs for the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation in St. Paul, Minn.

Gilbert Named Marshall University President Jerome “Jerry” Gilbert began his tenure as president of Marshall University in January 2016. Prior to coming to Marshall, Gilbert held positions at Mississippi State University (MSU) for many years and spent the last six years as MSU’s provost and executive vice president. A noted scholar in biomedical engineering, he earned his undergraduate degree from Mississippi State and his doctorate from Duke University. In addition to serving institutions, he has been a board member of the Association of Chief Academic Officers and was the 2005 president of the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He is a 1976 initiate of the Mississippi State University Circle.

Trude Heller’s

Amazing Journey

Trude Schönthal Heller was born in Austria. She escaped with her family as the prevalence of the Nazi Party rose in Austria in 1941.

Prior to her arrival in the U.S., Trude met Max Heller when she was only 15 and he was 18. He had escaped in 1938, ended up in Greenville, S.C., and they married in 1942.

Through the years, Trude Heller has been active with the Furman community, speaking about the Holocaust and supporting the university. Max Heller, who died in 2011, founded the Maxon Shirt Company and served the community of Greenville, S.C. as its mayor.

Trude Heller, a 1999 honorary doctorate recipient from Furman University, was inducted into the Furman University Circle on September 25, 2015, as the circle’s honoris causa initiate.

Super Bowl

Success Stories

Nearly everyone knows that Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos won the 2016 Super Bowl. What not everyone knows is that Manning is an initiate of the University of Tennessee Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa.

By the end of his junior year, Manning had earned sufficient credit hours to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in speech communications. He was initiated into O∆K in 1997 and also into Phi Beta Kappa.

Manning wasn’t the only O∆K member who was a winner this year during the Super Bowl. Travis Braun, a 2009 initiate of the Franklin College Circle, won $1M in the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest along with his friend Jacob Chase. Their commercial is the one where three dogs finally outsmart the store manager to get into the grocery store to get the Doritos. Check out the QR code to see the video.

Braun studied journalism at Franklin College. After completing his degree, he went onto Los Angeles to continue his career in television writing. As part of the prize package, Braun will also have the opportunity to work with director Zach Snyder on several of his projects.

Day of Service NATIONAL

or the past eight years, on the second Thursday in April, O∆K circles from across the country participate in the National Day of Service.

This year’s event took place on April 14, and it was another great success. Circles engage in activities including preparing and serving meals for homeless individuals, working in a community garden, coordinating activities at after-school programs, and visiting individuals in nursing facilities.

This year’s National Day of Service coincided with O∆K’s first-annual National Day of Giving. With the support of 53 donors, $5,675.54 was raised to support scholarships, convention programming, circle grants, and member outreach. Many of these gifts were from first-time donors.

One gift that was particularly special came in from the Concordia University Irvine Circle. The amount was $191.40, in recognition of the founding year for Omicron Delta Kappa.

Below are several short profiles about some of the 2016 National Day of Service projects.

Louisiana State University The LSU Circle participated in GEAUX Big Baton Rouge. This city beautification project involved the collaboration of several clubs and organizations.

Several members of the circle scraped, primed, and painted the carport of a deserving 90-year-old member of the community (photo right).

Fontbonne University The Fontbonne University Circle returned to the House of Living Stone Community Garden to do some yard work and help plant this year. This is the third year for the circle’s partnership with the House of Living Stone. As their advisor Joel Hermann said, “If you think the group has grown, you should see the garden” (photo below).

SUNY Potsdam The SUNY Potsdam Circle has been partnering with Hospice for many years. This year, the members of the circle made and donated healing stones to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. The stones serve as remembrances and stress relievers for family members dealing with the grief of losing a loved one.

University of Kentucky At the University of Kentucky, the members of the circle prepared sandwiches for individuals at a local homeless shelter in Lexington.

A Time of Progress A message from the Foundation President In many organizations, it is difficult to keep anything a secret; however, this spring I have had the pleasure of being “in on” two big secrets within the life of Omicron Delta Kappa.

First, I’ve had the opportunity to see the cover art for this issue of The Circle. It has been my great pleasure to serve alongside Dr. Michael Christakis as O∆K’s National President and as a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees.

Mike has been a super leader for Omicron Delta Kappa, and I have appreciated his support of the Foundation’s efforts to increase resources to support the development the campus leaders of today into the community leaders of tomorrow.

Second, I had the opportunity to return to my alma mater in April to announce the Foundation’s newly established endowed fund named for Dr. Kenneth P. Ruscio who will step down as president of Washington and Lee University at the end of 2016. Ken served as O∆K’s president from 2002 - 06. Ken was instrumental in bringing Omicron Delta Kappa’s national headquarters back to Lexington, and he was truly surprised when the gifts from members of the Alpha Circle and other contributors were announced during W&L’s alumni weekend.

Endowed funds to support school-specific scholarship and programming funds are presently being established for a number of long-operating circles. These funds will provide at least one scholarship for a member of the circle to attend graduate or professional school.

They will also provide support for convention travel and circle activities.

As the 2016 fiscal year comes to a close, the Foundation is also pleased to announce the creation of the Sustaining Circle program.

Members who make a contribution of at least $50 have the opportunity to access the O∆K Careers platform, receive O∆K’s award-winning magazine, and invitations to select member events that will be held around the country during the next academic year. Details about the careers platform and the Sustaining Circle initiative may be found on our organization’s website at www.odk.org.

It’s Mike Christakis – O∆K Man of Vision!

Our outgoing National President, Dr. Michael Christakis, looks a little like Clark Kent with his dark hair and glasses.

However, for those of us who have had the pleasure of working with him, we know he can also embody Mr. Kent’s alter ego.

When the circle at Alfred University was established in 1998, Mike was a member of the chartering class and served as the circle’s first president. He had several leadership positions within O∆K while in graduate school and eventually went onto to serve as our first National Student Vice President. He held the position of National Vice President for Circle Standards, and he will be concluding his second term as our National President during the convention this summer. There are many in our organization who have literally watched Mike Christakis evolve from a campus leader of today into a community leader of tomorrow.

The growth in Omicron Delta Kappa has been significant during Mike’s tenure as National President. There have been 30 new circles added and our membership numbers have reached an all-time high during his presidency. More importantly, Mike has led the effort to craft our long-range plan which has been developed to guide the Society through 2024.

Mike’s vision for our Society was the guiding force in developing the long-range plan. In the development of the plan, Mike championed not only growing membership and representation of campuses but improving the life-

long member experience as well. He made certain that the plan identified strategies for enhancing leadership development, providing post-baccalaureate opportunities for members, and offering programs that would benefit individuals at all phases of their leadership journeys.

He was also insistent about having the plan address how the fore-mentioned efforts would need to be supported through philanthropic resources, engaged staff and volunteers, and communications efforts. Just as importantly, Mike worked with the members of the Society Board of Directors to include strategic priorities and initiatives in the plan that reflect our values including our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

On March 24th of each year, I remind Mike that it is “our anniversary” – the anniversary of the date he offered me the position as O∆K’s Executive Director. We often talk about how that conversation changed both of our lives. I am thankful that he invited me to join him, the individuals on our volunteer boards, our members, and our staff in implementing his vision for the future of Omicron Delta Kappa.

A Legacy of Service Laura Morgan was the first full-time administrator for international students and scholars at the University of Miami, where she served until she retired in 1998. She was an extremely creative and dedicated international administrator, and she served as a campus leader in the creation of several of Miami’s innovative international programs and services, many of which are still in place today.

Laura, a 1991 alumni initiate of the University of Miami Circle, left a bequest for Omicron Delta Kappa in her will. The O∆K Foundation is using the proceeds from her estate to establish a circle-specific scholarship in her memory that will assist future Miami Circle members who wish to attend graduate or professional school.

Planned gifts help secure the future of O∆K, can include a will bequest; naming the O∆K Foundation as a beneficiary of life insurance, retirement plan, or annuity; and can be revocable in the event that an individual’s needs should change in the future.
