president’s letter

Dear Member, Omicron Delta Kappa is an organization devoted to leadership journeys – big and small.

We provide support to individuals as leaders, communities of leaders, and those who promote the ideals of leadership. These past several weeks, I’ve reflected a bit on how O∆K has supported me in my own ongoing leadership journey.

My first involvement with O∆K was an undergraduate at Alfred University. I was a member of the chartering class when the circle was installed by then National Vice President Cheryl Hogle. I remember how delighted Cheryl was when she found her guest room filled with blue delphiniums, the flower of O∆K. Shortly after the circle was established, I attended the 1998 convention in Knoxville, Tenn. and was eventually elected the first National Student Vice President of our organization in St. Louis, Mo. in 2000.

Since then, Omicron Delta Kappa has continued to support me through networking and service opportunities throughout my career. I firmly believe that I hold my current professional position, in part, because of O∆K’s support of me as an individual on my leadership journey.

Throughout my career, I have also had the opportunity to witness how Omicron Delta Kappa supports communities of leaders. The simplest representation of these communities of leaders is our circles on 296 campuses nationwide. Circles not only enhance the leadership journeys of our members, but they contribute to the celebration, recognition, and development of leaders on their campuses and in their communities.

I can’t help but think that 101 years later, our founders would be pleased to know how our members and circles continue to embrace the ideals of leadership upon which our Society was established.

Indeed, since our founding, there have undoubtedly been hundreds of thousands of leadership journeys characterized by the steadfast hallmarks of our organization – scholarship, service, integrity, character, and fellowship.

With this issue of The Circle, we celebrate those who support our mission and each of those leadership journeys – big or small – made possible by your investment in our members, circles, and O∆K’s century-old ideals.

Trending Now Initiation Ceremony Last fall, O∆K updated the initiation ceremony to be more inclusive of all members. The new initiation handbook provides additional guidance for the set-up for O∆K ceremonies, and offers alternative language for the opening and closing of the ritual.

Happy Birthday O∆K! On Dec. 3, 2015, O∆K celebrated our 101st anniversary. On that day many years ago, 15 students and faculty founded Omicron Delta Kappa to recognize and encourage leadership across all phases of campus life. Thank you to all members for a wonderful first century. We look forward to leading in the next 100 years.

Welcome New Staff Robin Murphey

Robin Murphey earned a Master of Education in higher education and student affairs from Indiana University Bloomington and a bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics. Her involvement with O∆K began with her induction in 1999, and she has since served in many capacities including faculty officer and National Advisory Council member.

In her new role as Assistant Director for Membership Services, Robin is responsible for communicating with circles and helping colleges and universities form new circles.

Student Leadership Competencies Inventory Omicron Delta Kappa has started an initial research effort with the developers of the Student Leadership Competencies Inventory (SLCI). Current collegiate members have the opportunity to assess their leadership potential by evaluating their skills within 60 competencies required by the academic-discipline based accrediting agencies. In addition, our organization will have access to the data in aggregate form to help our leadership develop a greater appreciation for the unique attribute of O∆K members. One of the developers of the instrument, Dr. Corey Seemiller, presented a workshop for our members and leadership educators on utilizing the SLCI on April 26, 2016.

This past fall, National Vice President Michelle Burke and Executive Director Tara Singer, attended the Lead 365 conference in Orlando along with five conference scholarship attendees.

Through the generosity of Lead 365’s founder, Nancy Hunter Denney, Elizabeth Sullivan (Stetson University), Ann Margaret Zelenka (University of Baltimore), Peter Wildeboer (Baylor University), Nolan Avery (The College at Brockport – SUNY), and Holley Hood (University of Houston – Clear Lake) all had the opportunity to attend the conference as scholarship recipients.

Participants had the opportunity to hear from a number of excellent speakers and explore a wide range of personal and professional leadership topics. Nancy will also be presenting a pre-conference workshop on creative leadership as part of the 2016 Biennial Convention and Leadership Conference.

Q& A

At the conclusion of the 2016 Biennial Convention and Leadership Conference, three long-serving collegiate members will go off of the Society Board of Directors. In addition to their involvement in O∆K, Parker Vascik (national student vice president), Brianna Hitt (member-at-large), and Ben Williams (member-at-large) have all also been accomplished in the performing arts.

O∆K: What has been your experience as a performing artist?

Parker: Throughout college, I explored my musical interests as a cellist with the Georgia Tech Symphony as well as through singing bass with the Glee Club.

Brianna: I’ve planned French horn for 14 years – participating in orchestra and wind ensembles throughout college, and I now play for church events and in a community wind ensemble.

Ben: My best experience as a performer was as part of an improv show at Georgia State that was developed to bring awareness to campus climate issues.

O∆K: As a performer, what has been the biggest leadership lessons you have learned?

Parker: Performing on stage (or on the sidewalk!) with a music group makes you keenly aware of how essential each and every person is to the whole. If anyone in our 85 piece orchestra or 40 member glee club skips a beat or misses a cue, then the performance suffers. Unlike a sports or

academic team where a mistake often doesn’t lead to the loss of the game, in music, a mistake lessens the quality of the performance and impacts the art of the musicians and composer. I learned to help my team identify that those extra hours of practice, those grueling late night rehearsals, and those high-stress public appearances were warranted to allow our group not simply to do a performance, but rather to create art. Leading a team that sets its own goals and measures its own success taught me new lessons that I didn’t acquire from academic or sports leadership.

Brianna: I served as a section leader in high school and college. I learned to work together with my section to accomplish a common goal, take advantage of my colleagues’ strengths and talents, and accept that I’m not always the best performer, marcher, etc.

O∆K: What about leadership as an artist translate to other opportunities to lead and serve?

Ben: Whether leading an organization, or performing a show for a group of 200, you strive to connect with the emotion, experience, and truth of those who you work with and you serve.

Parker: There are many important leadership opportunities in life where “success” cannot be simply expressed or measured. Music teaches a leader how to inspire, encourage, and train followers to strive for a nebulous, often self-defined goal (i.e.,“good” music), find the innerconfidence to share their strengths and imperfections (a public performance), and then derive satisfaction from the art they created and the joy they shared.

O∆K: What is your favorite memory of your time of service on the O∆K Society Board of Directors?

Ben: Meeting the members of the University of South Carolina Circle during the winter 2015 meeting. They inspired me as those students are the reason that the O∆K Idea still lives today. They are why I serve and invest in Omicron Delta Kappa.

Brianna: The summer 2013 meeting where we had the opportunity to visit the homes of two board members in New York. We even went to Saratoga Springs, and it was the board meeting where I got to know the other board members best.

Ben Williams

O∆K: As your term on the O∆K Society Board of Directors ends, what are your hopes for the organization and specifically the collegiate and recent graduate member experience?

Ben: Continued growth, engagement, and impact.

Brianna: I hope that we can find ways to engage more fully collegiate members who are not circle officers and to provide a more meaningful experience for recent graduates.

I hope that we can establish a network, allowing those members to connect with one another. I also hope that we can use data to better inform decisions.

Parker: At the end of its first century, O∆K was a studentfocused organization that linked exceptional faculty and student leaders on college campuses to improve their community. I am hopeful that in this next century O∆K will expand its horizons to connect students, business professionals, government officials, professional athletes, and renowned artists with the common goal of improving our country and world.

A Passionate Leader for

Exceptional Dogs for Extraordinary People

Cabell Youell went to law school and soon determined that it was a dog’s life.

Not that practicing law was bad, but she eventually discovered that it was the inspiration of service dogs that was her true passion.

Hero

Youell, an initiate of the Alpha Circle at Washington and Lee University, is the executive director of Saint Francis Service Dogs based in Roanoke, Va. Established by volunteers in 1996, Saint Francis Service Dogs is the one of the only two programs in the state accredited by Assistance Dogs International. While the organization’s original mission was to train service dogs to help specific individuals, its program has been expanded to provide training of facility dogs.

Dogs assist their partners with tasks such as turning devices, such as lights on and off; helping get through doors; and picking up and relocating items in a room. Also, of note is the organization’s work with veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and have physical challenges because of injuries they sustained while serving in the military.

Running after different dreams Youell began her association with Saint Francis as a volunteer when she was still practicing corporate law in Roanoke. The organization asked for her assistance in setting up their Prison Pup program at the regional mediumsecurity prison. During law school, Youell had worked at another prison clinic that assisted women at a minimum-security federal facility. This clinic helped women to secure benefits that they were entitled to receive from the Department of Corrections, prepared custody documents for the care of their children, and assisted with other issues. Through this experience, she became familiar with the challenges of a prison bureaucracy. After the Prison Pup program was established in 2002, she joined the board of Saint Francis and became its executive director in 2003.

After graduating with her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1991, Youell moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked before enrolling in law school at Washington and Lee University. She graduated in 1999.

service In addition to being initiated into O∆K while in law school, she was the Head Honor Advocate and won the Wilfred J. Ritz Award for Excellence in the Alderson Legal Assistance Program.

Youell has been recognized several times for her contributions to the greater Roanoke community. In 2010, she was received the YMCA’s Women’s Achievement Award for business. In 2015, she was selected as Virginia Lawyers Media’s 2015 Influential Woman of the Year.

During her tenure, the nonprofit secured the funding, built, and opened a state-of-the-art facility for training dogs for placement.

The staff has grown to 12 people, and there is significant volunteer engagement. Youell is a member of the Assistance Dogs International North America’s Board of Directors.

Youell notes, “Saint Francis does not receive state or federal funding, nor do we receive insurance reimbursements. We rely on donations, grants, and fundraisers to survive. Most of our support historically has come from the Roanoke Valley. In the future, we intend to expand our fundraising efforts to other parts of our service area where dogs are placed (the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as portions of North Carolina and West Virginia within a three-hour driving range of Saint Francis).”

In addition to being socialized to being devoted to the needs of an individual or to being comfortable with the chaos and different people found in various environments, Saint Francis also trains its dogs to go for help and carrying bags. The dogs also help by picking up and moving items, getting food out of refrigerators, and assisting with turning lights on and off.

Sampson Thor Meet Thor Thor (photo above), a four-month-old yellow Labrador, really isn’t behind bars because he was a bad puppy. He, along with Doc, Odin, and Q-bert, have all been recent residents at Saint Francis’ 18-acre training facility in Roanoke. Although the puppies are incredibly cute, the work that they do to become certified service dogs is somewhat arduous.

Golden retrievers, Labradors of many colors, and other breeds are found in the training corps. Most are taller dogs that can reach counters and commercial doors. It takes about two years to train a service dog at a cost of nearly $25,000 per dog.

Training begins when the puppies are eight weeks old. Each year, Saint Francis connects10-15 dogs with partners. Over time, the nonprofit hopes to secure the resources to place 25 dogs on an annual basis.

Youell notes that the work of Saint Francis, a non-secular organization, focuses on training dogs for individuals with physical disabilities. Training for seeing-eye dogs follows different protocols. Some training takes place in the home of the volunteers who help to raise the puppies, and weekly classes completed by the puppies and their handlers supplement the effort. Puppies also receive socialization and assistance training as part of the Prison Pup program at the Bland Correctional Facility.

After the conclusion of their training, the dogs are treated to an official graduation ceremony. This spring, ten puppies will earn the credential of being a certified service dog and start their careers as partners for individuals and organizations across Virginia and the region.

Partners in progress Dogs will be placed in a variety of settings following completion of their training and certification. Some will be connected with individuals with physical difficulties, and others will be assigned to facilities and organizations that serve communities of individuals. Placing dogs with individuals is the main focus of the program at Saint Francis. The humans for these dogs are intentionally referred to as partners. According to Youell, “Saint Francis refers to our clients as partners because it more accurately describes our relationship than the word ‘client’ does.

Although our partners do not pay for their dogs, they do put in a great deal of effort to make sure that the match with their service dog is successful.” She goes on to say, “At the end of the matching process, we consider the person a partner to their dog – a team. We also consider ourselves as partners to that team. Everyone has invested a great deal of time, money, and heart into the process and at the end of it, we are all partners with the same goal – a long and fruitful relationship between person and service dog.”

Service Dogs on Campus

Reportedly, there are only two colleges and universities that have resident facility dogs on campus. One of those institutions is Idaho State University (ISU) – the location of one of O∆K’s newest circles.

Hero, a two-year-old black Labradoodle, is the facility/emotional support dog for ISU’s Veterans Students Service Center (VSSC).

Unlike a dog trained to assist a single individual, Hero provides support to the entire community she serves. Two members of ISU Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, Michael Mares and Chad Elliot, are involved with the VSSC and are engaged with Hero and her work.

Her acquisition at ISU is largely attributed to research that the center’s staff completed on how facility animals have a significant impact veterans’ recoveries. They found a lot of information on the positive effects of dogs being able to support veterans’ emotional needs, especially by providing assistance with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as how they can assist with dealing with physical injuries and challenges.

The cost of Hero’s care is supported through private donations and coordinated through the university’s foundation. Hero even has her own Facebook and Twitter accounts. According to Todd Johnson, the director of ISU’s VSSC, “Hero is a valuable part of our team’s success in serving student and community veterans. Her presence creates a feeling of inclusion and unity for everyone who comes in contact with her.”

Veteran dogs fulfill the myriad of tasks completed by a service dog; however, they also provide emotional support for combat-related issues including PTSD. Facility dogs work in schools, courthouses, nursing and rehabilitation centers, and in programs championing children and their needs. They can assist with physical therapy as well as provide reassurance and affection to the individuals in the communities they serve. Many facility dogs are golden retrievers and Labradors because the friendly and approachable nature of these breeds.

When asked about the nature of the dogs’ leadership styles, Youell said, “I definitely think of it as servant leadership . . . The dogs themselves are a great catalyst for personal change. A service dog is a potent weapon against the pitfalls of disability in a very holistic way. Yes, the dog makes it easier for a person with a disability to perform the tasks of daily living. The dog does retrieve items, turn lights on and off, goes for help, open doors, and brings the phone. But the dog does much more. People with disabilities face more than physical barriers. They also face feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety. A service dog helps to treat all of these issues by providing steadfast, constant, and loyal companionship. Service dogs crack the isolation many people with disabilities feel in public, providing a natural and positive way to interact with the public. All of our partners report an increase in confidence and decrease in feelings of hopelessness and loneliness.”

The tagline for Saint Francis Service Dogs is, “Exceptional Dogs for Extraordinary People.” Cabell Youell is exceptional and extraordinary in her devotion to her organization’s mission, the individuals it serves, and the dogs that provide that service. Bryant University’s O∆K Provides Mentorship for Innovation Program Bryant University’s leadership program, created and directed by Professor of Management Michael Roberto, focuses on teaching first-year students how to solve real world challenges. “The Bryant IDEA,” a three-day intensive academic program, teaches brainstorming, prototyping, and working with a team. Each group of 35 students is assigned a specific, real world issue, and students work through innovative ideas to find a viable solution. A student, faculty member, staff member, and alumni mentor provide support and guidance to each group.

Roberto, who was initiated into the Bryant University Circle in 2009, appreciated the value of mentorship and asked O∆K members partner with the program by serving as Bryant IDEA student mentors every year. Roberto said, “student mentors in the IDEA program have the unique opportunity to work alongside faculty members, as partners in delivering an important academic program. They teach, advise, counsel, and support our first-year students. They serve as wonderful exemplars for these young students, as well.”

Max Karsok, president of Bryant’s circle, explained the mutually beneficial relationship. “First-year students are provided an upper-class mentor that they can relate to; our members also gain a lot from the experience and can further develop themselves as leaders.”

Matt Licari has served as an IDEA student mentor for two years and was a participant in the program in 2013. “Going from a student in the program to a mentor has been such a rewarding experience. I’ve had the opportunity to not only pass along things that I’ve learned, but also continue to develop as a leader myself, which is what I believe O∆K is all about.”

University of South Carolina opens Carolina Closet Carolina Closet, a professional attire rental program started by University of South Carolina students, opened last spring. The program will rent business professional clothing to students for job or internship interviews, or other professional opportunities.

Many students use student loans, work study programs, and part-time jobs to support their financial needs while earning a degree. This program aimed to help these students and others more easily acquire professional attire.

Jacqueline Plyler, O∆K’s 2015 National Leader of the Year worked with Student Body President and O∆K member Lindsay Richardson to make the program possible. She worked with circle members to submit and ultimately be awarded a Clay Grant in support of the program.

Richardson got the idea for the program when one of the students living in her residence hall needed to borrow professional clothes. Richardson realized that many others likely needed business attire for presentations and interviews, but may not have the financial means to invest in clothing while they are in college.

2015 Clay Grant

Awards

Omicron Delta Kappa’s Maurice A. Clay Leadership Development Initiative awards small grants of up to $500 to individual circles that propose specific programs to enhance leadership development on their campuses. The selection committee takes into account three distinct characteristics when reviewing applications: furthering circle engagement within the campus community, enhancing current programming, and developing new initiatives to increase publicity.

In 2015, Omicron Delta Kappa awarded a total of $7,280 to 10 circles.

Georgia College and State University

The Inspire! series invites prominent business and nonprofit executives to campus to share leadership lessons with students.

Each presenter will have the opportunity to speak about his or her experiences and views on leadership. Students have the opportunity to network with the speakers and fellow students with the goal to create positive change and gain real-world insight into leadership.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Georgia Tech’s professional leadership conference will offer opportunities for all students to engage and gain strategic insight into leadership in a variety of fields. Panel topics include: professional leadership in the classroom, startup environments, corporations, and the diverse cultural landscapes of global business.

Hamline University

Hamline’s Power Brunch will allow for candid conversation about an issue relating to Hamline University. Student leaders, administrators, faculty, and staff will be invited and encouraged to discuss a specific topic chosen by an influential person on campus. This year, the circle will work with President Fayneese Miller who has invested in campus and community relationships.

Middle Tennessee State University

The recently opened Military and Veterans Center was created to help veterans and children of veterans navigate the vast higher education system. Many traditional students are not aware of the challenges veterans often face returning to college from military service. The circle and the director hope to foster greater understanding by bringing a military leader to speak on campus. The circle also delivers holiday cards to veterans living in a nursing home to support veterans and help students gain a greater respect for diversity.

Samford University

Samford University plans to host a program that will connect Christian faith and learning by discussing the unconventional

ways that Christ served as a leader. The program’s focus is two-fold: to introduce freshman to the idea that there are unconditional ways to be an impactful leader on campus and to create a foundation for an honest community in which ideas can be exchanged, discussed, and considered.

State University of New York, Oneonta

SUNY Oneonta will host an honor society workshop to teach students how to apply StrengthsQuest training to their personal development as leaders and better understand their honor society group dynamics. Students will discuss at least two ways to improve their honor society during round table discussions.

State University of New York, Oswego

In partnership with the SUNY Oswego Student Association, the circle intends to host The Future Oswego Leaders Conference.

Objectives include: showcasing the leadership that exists on campus, connecting students with prominent alumni to recognize and foster collaboration, and promoting leadership.

The conference includes student presentations, alumni panel discussions, and diversity forums.

Transylvania University

Director of Student Involvement and Leadership, Dr. Shane McKee, manages a leadership program which “provides a formalized and official leadership curriculum aimed at educating, training, and preparing students to be values-congruent leaders.”

The O∆K circle will add student-to-student mentorship to the program. The circle hopes to inspire leadership in freshman and sophomores and break down barriers between upper and underclassmen to allow for collaboration and exchanges of ideas.

University at Albany

The circle plans to invite two recent honoris causa members, Kathy Sheehan, mayor of Albany, and Robert Jones, university president, for a moderated conversation to discuss service opportunities that the university and the city could offer to one another. Students will learn about the importance of community collaboration and how communities work together to achieve success. During the reception, students can share volunteer opportunities and foster relationships with community members.

University of South Carolina

After Columbia’s “thousand-year storm,” O∆K members mobilized the campus community to assist in local relief efforts.

The circle and the university will develop an open source platform that provides organizational and communication assistance during times of crisis. The tool provides mass communication services, gathers information from relief partner agencies to help identify where help is necessary, and the type of support required in these locations.

Opening Keynote Speech: Simple Solutions for Colossal Problems Derreck Kayongo and his family fled a civil war in Uganda and settled in the U.S. when he was just ten years old. Now a successful entrepreneur and the current CEO of the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Kayongo is an expert in environmental sustainability and global health, as the founder of the Global Soap Project which takes donated, purified, and reprocessed hotel soap and redistributes it to vulnerable populations around the world. His talk will address how a child refugee turned human rights hero devised a simple solution to a colossal problem. he notion of doing something “like a girl” has carried a variety of social and cultural meanings, as explored in last year’s Super Bowl advertisement and continued in the (viral) #LikeAGirl Campaign. The Super Bowl ad for Always asked people to explain the concept of “like a girl,” and many of the answers and depictions illuminated a negative association. While many young women see themselves just as they are (or how they want to be seen), others see them differently.

Some individuals may hold onto antiquated ideas which suggest that ‘male’ and ‘masculine’ are somehow better, and ‘female’ and ‘feminine’ are lesser in terms of worthiness, value, and potential.

Title IX largely grew out of the work of Rep. Patsy T. Mink of Hawaii, the first woman of color and first Asian-American elected to the House of Representatives, Senator Birch Bayh (Ind.), and Rep. Edith Louise Starrett Green (Ore.), among others.

Senator Bayh, a 1965 O∆K initiate of the Purdue University Circle, wrote, “Title IX grew out of my work sponsoring the Equal Rights Amendment in the early 1970s.” At the time, women still did not have equal opportunity in higher education as students, faculty, or staff. When his then-wife, Marvella, wished to continue her education at the University of Virginia, she was told, “women need not apply.”

As Bayh writes, “Prior to Title IX, women students were denied equal opportunities under the law in academics; women applicants were routinely denied equal access to medical, law, and other graduate disciplines; and women athletes were denied equal participation in sports.

Similarly, female faculty members were denied equal compensation and promotion.”

Title IX, officially The Education Amendment of 1972, and later renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act, states: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. — 20 U.S.C. 1681

Gender discrimination and related issues like the pay gap, lack of women in leadership roles, and family leave restrictions has inspired leaders in all fields, including many O∆K members, to challenge cultural norms and create change. The passage of Title IX represents one major shift, and this legislation continues to impact campus life today.

While Title IX has had a significant positive effect on fair access to education, sports, and campus life, legislation and practices must continue to evolve to ensure equality.

Stemming in part from the previously enacted Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (which “provides that an employer may not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin”), historian and author William Glover explains, “Title IX extends that same philosophy to any program that receives funding from the federal government.”

Since Title IX’s promise of protection under the law, the growth in opportunity for women has expanded immensely.

According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, women’s participation in college sports has increased more than fivefold since the law’s passage. Before Title IX, a General Accounting Office report found 30,000 female undergraduates participated in athletics compared to 248,000 men at American colleges and universities.

According to Bayh’s website, “women’s sports received less than two percent of college athletic budgets before Title The Circle • Spring 2016 | 17

Women’s representation among law school students has risen from seven percent to 43 percent and from nine percent to 41 percent of medical school students. On college and university faculties, the proportion of women professors has risen from 18 percent to almost 40 percent.” Women now account for more than half of the nation’s undergraduate and graduate students overall.

The history of female leadership in O∆K stretches back to the same time in the early 1970s. Women were not offered membership during the first sixty years of O∆K’s history.

However, members from the University of Alabama argued for the inclusion of women at the 1970 and 1972 national conventions. In 1974, O∆K initiated its first female members.

Since then, the inclusion and vital participation of women in O∆K has grown considerably and now reflects the significance of women in higher education and as leaders in their communities.

Cheryl M. Hogle, after serving four terms as faculty province director and two terms as national vice president for extension, became the first woman national president of O∆K, elected unanimously in 1998. O∆K’s second woman president, Betsy Bugg Holloway, served in the position from 201012. Also, female members play integral roles on the Society Board of Directors, the Foundation Board of Trustees, and the National Advisory Council. Today, while O∆K does not keep a tally of membership by gender, the organization as a whole continues to strive for even greater inclusion and recognizes outstanding leaders of all genders.

Unquestionably, Title IX continues to play an important part in education and opportunity, yet challenges to gender equality still exist. As stated by the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education.

“Women’s advancement in some areas, including computer science and engineering, has stagnated or even declined in recent years. Pregnant and parenting students are frequently subjected to unlawful policies and practices that deter them from completing their education. Nearly half of all middle and high school students report being sexually harassed in school.”

In today’s context, Title IX often connects to trending topics in sports administration, funding of programs, and sexual assault. According to Barbara Winslow, in “The Impact of Title IX,” the law also addresses equality in many other areas, including “access to higher education, career education, education for pregnant and parenting students, employment, learning environment, math and science, sexual harassment, standardized testing, and technology.”

Valerie Holmes, an O∆K initiate of the Grand Valley State University Circle and associate dean of students in the Office of Student Conduct at Wake Forest University, explains: “There continues to be a shroud of misunderstanding around Title IX, because in the 40 years of amendments and public focus of the law we are just now making the law central to the daily function of colleges. With the development of Title IX offices on college campuses, there is a renewed interest in sex discrimination in education bringing light to aspects of the law well beyond intercollegiate athletics […]. The focus is on education, awareness, process, implementation, transparency, and assessment of sexual discrimination and sexual misconduct. Today, more so than yesterday, stakeholders are better informed with facts about their rights and the requirements of institutions of higher education.

diversity The statistics show, and as President Barack Obama mentioned in his 2016 State of the Union address, we still have work to do to ensure equality and “equal pay for equal work, paid leave […] and making education affordable for all.” It has only been 43 years since Title IX was passed into law, and even fewer years since the Equal Rights Amendment failed to be ratified; yet women still struggle to have their rights be recognized by the law.

She struggled to gain admission to law school because of her gender and later found it difficult to secure employment in established law firms because she was a married woman. Even the bar exam in Hawaii offered obstacles: Though she was born in Hawaii, her husband was not, therefore she was not classified as a Hawaii resident and was initially denied the chance to take the bar exam. She later became the first female Japanese-American in Hawaii to pass the bar exam.

has created pressure for campuses to develop and almost simultaneously master, provide oversight, and implementation of the law. Because the focus of Title IX is on students, faculty, and staff, there is a much broader scope to the work that Title IX coordinators perform.”

A major criticism today is the handling of sexual violence on college campuses. Title IX requires institutions to handle sexual assault cases in addition, or prior, to reporting to local law enforcement agencies. In some cases, this allows institutions of higher education to respond quickly to survivors’ needs that would go unaddressed by the criminal justice system. In others, college and university employees and departments lack the resources and training to handle such cases. A result, students experience inconsistencies, stigmatization, and are even discouraged from reporting sexual violence or harrassment.

Regulations need enforcement, and many of the significant issues related to Title IX —discrimination, sexism, and violence—have not gone away. Today, both male and notably female students continue to face aggression and gender discrimination. These acts violate student safety and trust and significantly interfere with their success in college and beyond.

Shay Chan Hodges, author of Lean On and Lead, a book about participating in the 21st century economy while raising children, notes, “Female voters have outnumbered males in every presidential race since 1964, but that has neither eliminated the gender pay gap, nor assured equal employment opportunities. Voting alone has yet to resolve vital issues that disproportionately affect women, and, in particular, mothers, such as paid sick leave, parental leave, flexible workplaces, affordable childcare and college, living wages for caregivers, and a fair minimum wage.”

Organizations like O∆K recognize leaders and provide leadership opportunities, and members in O∆K often go on to become leaders in countless fields, working to eliminate social and cultural gender biases. For instance, as an undergraduate intern in 2014 in the Office of Vice President Joe Biden, Najaah Daniels, a recent president of the St. John’s University Circle, worked with the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault.

Her work helped to create sexual assault awareness and addressing the Title IX concern of ensuring a safe campus environment for all students.

As a result of efforts beginning even before the mandate of Title IX, women and men now can access diverse fields of interest and can attend whichever schools they choose—and ideally, they can become members of any organization for which they meet the standards. Still more has to be accomplished to ensure that students enjoy their educational opportunities safely and without judgment.

Continued vigilance is necessary because, as Patsy T. Mink said, “We all need to be reminded that since Title IX was put in place by a legislative body, it can be taken away by a legislative body.” Women’s rights were not protected by law until the 20th century, yet thanks to the work of many people, including O∆K members, from Birch Bayh to current advocates, the right steps have been taken to erase bias and stereotypes and to ensure safety, equity, and prosperity. ●

Outstanding Faculty Officer

A long-serving faculty officer for the circle at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) was selected as the 2015 Morlan-Bishop Outstanding Faculty Officer Award winner.

Dr. C. Elaine Freeman and National Vice-President Michelle Burke

Dr. C. Elaine Freeman, a recently retired professor of education at MSSU and a 1977 initiate of the Pittsburg State University Circle, has served as either the faculty secretary or the faculty advisor for the Golden Crest Circle since its inception. Golden Crest, a local honor society emulating the ideals of Omicron Delta Kappa, was created in the spring of 1986 on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. Twenty students and three faculty members were charter members. One year later, April 26, 1987, the local society received the national Omicron Delta Kappa charter. Since that time more than 800 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and honorary members have been inducted into the local Golden Crest Circle.

In addition to nearly 30 years of service to the local Golden Crest Circle, Dr. Freeman has advocated for Omicron Delta Kappa on a regional and national level. Among her accomplishments are serving as chair of the 2000 National Convention in St. Louis. She also served on the Knoxville National Convention Planning Committee and was the chair of the major speakers in 1998. In addition to convention-related involvement, Dr. Freeman served four terms on the National Nominating Committee, three years on the National Committee on Extension, and as a member of the General Council (the national governing board) from 1995-2000 and again from 2005-06. During the era that Omicron Delta Kappa maintained a province structure, Dr. Freeman served as the Province XI director as well as the editor of the province’s newsletter for several years.

John Herbst, chair of the National Awards Committee, commended Dr. Freeman on this award by writing to her, “This award recognizes an outstanding faculty officer for their dedication to the ideals of O∆K. The Awards Committee commends you on your valuable contributions to O∆K on the campus of Missouri Southern State University, and for your past contributions to the National Society. You are truly deserving.”

Her nominator for the award, Dr. Michael Garoutte, current faculty secretary for the Golden Crest Circle, wrote that Dr. Freeman “has consistently recruited qualified students for O∆K and championed both them and the organization as representatives of exemplary character, leadership, and service.” He also noted that she was honored as Omicron Delta Kappa Faculty Secretary of the Year for Province XI in 1994 and that she is a 1998 recipient of the Eldridge W. Roark, Jr., Meritorious Service Award.

National Vice President Michelle Burke presented the award to Dr. Freeman at the Golden Crest Circle’s initiation ceremony on November 15, 2015. Dr. Freeman said, “I am both humbled and honored to receive this award.”

“O∆K has been an important part of my life since my undergraduate years and it has been my joy to serve in a faculty role and work with so many outstanding leaders. Our students are the very definition of service leadership and a living example of what is right with the world. I have been privileged to work with so many wonderful people and form great friendships through O∆K and want to thank all who made this award a reality. It is deeply humbling and a great honor.”

O∆K Members become University Presidents Mason Appointed University of DC President Ronald Mason, Jr., started as president of the University of the District of Columbia on July 1, 2015. Prior to being appointed president of UDC, Mason was the seventh president of the Southern University and A&M College System. He is a 1990 initiate of the Tulane University Circle. Mason earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Columbia University. He has been recognized for strong leadership throughout his more than 30 years of involvement in higher education, shared governance, and community development.

Andrews Named Southwestern College President Brad Andrews became the 19th president of Southwestern College (Kansas) on July 1, 2015. A 2003 initiate of the Carthage College Circle, where he also served as a faculty officer, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Missouri, his master’s from Drake University, and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. At the time of his appointment, his skills as a “collaborative leader” and passion for supporting students was noted. Previously, Andrews was a senior administrator at Carthage where he oversaw divisions that included areas such as admissions, financial aid, student affairs, first-year academic advising and retention, and religious life.

Keel Announced as Augusta University President Brooks Keel was named president of Augusta University on July 8, 2015. He also is the CEO of the Georgia Regents Health System. Keel earned both of his degrees from Augusta University’s founding universities: Augusta College (later Augusta State University) and the Medical College of Georgia (later Georgia Health Sciences University). Keel completed a bachelor’s degree at Augusta College before earning a doctorate from the Medical College of Georgia. He is a 2010 initiate of the Georgia Southern University Circle. Keel previously served that institution as its president and was recognized for being a “steadfast ally of students on both the undergraduate and graduate levels throughout his career.”

NASPA Pillars of the Profession Each year, the National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) recognizes a number of colleagues who exemplify the best of the profession. These individuals have served as administrators and faculty members and provided extraordinary service to NASPA, their institutions, and the profession. This year, several O∆K members were selected as honorees and will be recognized at NASPA’s annual convention.

Training to Lead With the start of every calendar year, I make resolutions. Mine are usually structured positively, as in, “Call old friends more regularly.” I like affirmative resolutions so much better than those which restrict life’s joys such as, “Eat fewer fried foods.”

Based on the ads for running shoes, exercise equipment, and meal plans, it’s evident that almost everyone seems to share the resolution to get in shape, exercise more, and eat better. However, all of this chatter also has me wondering about the leadership lessons from participation in athletics as well as our ability to train to become better leaders.

Some of the leadership lessons that can be taken from athletics are grounded in the concept of teamwork. Additionally, athletes often exhibit the ability to continue in spite of pain and discomfort.

Sometimes we rise to the challenge and lead our teams when we are struggling individually.

Omicron Delta Kappa is increasing its support to our collegiate members by providing them with more resources to become better leaders. Recently, we started producing a newsletter focused on topics of interest to emerging leaders. Leading Today Leading Tomorrow contains summaries of articles, videos, or other resources that the newest initiates of O∆K may find interesting early in their leadership journeys.

We now have a partnership that provides access for our collegiate members to the Student Leadership Competencies Inventory that may be used to assess their potential based on 60 leadership competencies required by the academic discipline accrediting agencies.

In April, we will sponsor a webinar, in conjunction with NASPA (National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education), about the SLCI and how it can be used to help students become better leaders while in college and beyond.

With the support of the C. Charles Jackson Foundation (CCJF), we have also been able to provide a select number of circles with access to The New York Times in Leadership. This online platform includes news articles, discussion questions, reading lists, video conferences, and social media resources about leadership. The CCJF is also sponsoring our June 2016 launch of a website with resources for individual members, circles, and leadership educators. O∆K Leadership Matters will have information about leadership assessments, theories, publications, conferences, and professional organizations.

In thinking about training for leadership, if, as the adage goes, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body;” then my colliery is, “Leading is to the heart what serving is to the soul.”

Ben Williams In addition to showing leadership as a philanthropic partner for O∆K, Benjamin “Ben” M. Williams is the coordinator for student involvement at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Currently, he serves O∆K as a member of the National Advisory Council and as a student member-at-large the Society Board of Directors. Throughout his career, he has also been active with the Association of College Unions International.

Ben earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Georgia State University where he was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa in 2011.

He recently completed a Master of Science in student affairs in higher education at Miami University.

During his time on O∆K’s Society Board of Directors, Ben has served on the Membership and Joint Audit committees. He is currently chairing a workgroup to support the area of diversity and inclusion in Omicron Delta Kappa. Ben hopes to develop tools and resources to support circles and to continue the strides made by O∆K to support the inclusion of the diversity represented by our members.

Ben supports the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation with a monthly gift to the growth capital fund. His philanthropic support also includes a yearly donation to fund a Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Circle Award. Ben recently became one of the youngest members of O∆K’s Heritage Society by designating a gift of retirement funds in his estate plans to the O∆K Foundation.
