president’s letter

Dear fellow leaders, Our esteemed Society owes so much to you—our volunteers and donors who have provided leadership, support, and guidance. Our Society is in a wonderful position due—in no small part—to the efforts of immediate past National President Dr. Michael Christakis, national headquarters staff, and our devoted circle officers, whether they be faculty, administrators, or students. During the convention, we reported on the state of the Society at the end of the 2016 fiscal year, which included 300 total active circles, 8,044 new initiates, and $316,326 raised to further the mission of O∆K. I am honored to have been elected the 35th National President of O∆K at the convention in June, and I hope to serve with distinction.

We each have our own O∆K leadership story. Mine began at Davidson College and continues to my role as associate dean of students at Wake Forest University. In my experience in the collegiate environment, leadership is often a story about the gentle nudge from a trusted friend, a calming presence in the midst of a setback, or enthusiastic encouragement to ambitious students.

The students who demonstrate excellence will be recognized at circles, both old and new, across the country this year. Each of these students has his or her own rich and unique experiences and aspirations that will add to O∆K’s leadership story of dedication, passion, and drive to create positive change. While our leaders continue to write their own stories, we must determine what story O∆K will tell.

During the convention, I shared my ideas for the future of O∆K. I would like to focus on three specific chapters of our story. First, we must continue to pursue avenues of exposing O∆K to college students. Members are the lifeblood of our organization, and we cannot hope to extend the reach of O∆K without expanding the opportunity of membership.

Additionally, we will focus on strengthening our programs of distinction. The convention, Drive-In

workshops, and circle-specific programs are important to the future of our Society. Our members deserve the very best, and we must focus our efforts toward providing a world-class and lifelong experience.

Finally, we’ve heard a lot recently about people being written out of the story because they are different. The O∆K story is written for everyone, and we will doggedly pursue diversity and inclusion at all levels of our Society.

Leadership in a global society is a vital commodity, and we must embrace the challenge to prepare our members for this environment.

I look forward to writing this story with the talented volunteers on the Society Board of Directors, the Foundation Board of Trustees, the National Advisory Council, the Student Advisory Board and, most importantly, with you—a fellow leader.

The Omicron Delta Kappa Society, Inc., the National Leadership Honor Society for college students, recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership, and exemplary character. O∆K® was founded December 3, 1914, at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. by 15 student and faculty leaders. Omicron Delta Kappa was the first college honor society of a national scope to give recognition for meritorious leadership and service in extracurricular activities; membership in Omicron Delta Kappa continues to be a mark of highest distinction and honor. The Society is now present on the campuses of more than 300 colleges and universities around the country.

O∆K’s first annual report issue is a review of our 2016 programs and events. Our programs are highlighted by the way in which they fulfill the Omicron Delta Kappa mission to: • identify, honor, and develop leaders in collegiate and community life; • encourage collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and alumni to advance leadership; and • promote and publicize our ideals.

You’ll see each of these goals in the sections that follow.

Like you, we see opportunities for leadership in every field and at every turn. Being a leader means we have the right and responsibility to strive for excellence, to be resourceful, and to be an ethical global citizen. Leadership is a dedication to honest and open conversation, and perhaps most importantly—collaborating with others to make positive change.

Whether it is the Clay Grant program, the Leaders of the Year, or simply the circle events held on campuses across the country, the ways in which students serve their campuses and communities give us hope for the future of leadership.

We see leaders whose drive for excellence includes the chance to serve others. When we meet students in person at Drive-In Workshops or at the national convention, we see great character, integrity, and a desire for excellence. We are impressed with each and every scholarship applicant and we are proud to support the ways in which they will shape this changing world.

Every year, the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation awards scholarships to more than 20 collegiate members to continue their educations through graduate and professional study. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $2,500. These recipients demonstrate exceptional academic performance and leadership abilities.

ANNA BALASSA Transylvania University Current Study: Eastern Kentucky University, Occupational Therapy, Ph.D. As president of the Transylvania Circle, Anna expanded the circle’s leadership development efforts. With the support of an O∆K Clay Grant, the circle added a mentoring piece to Transylvania’s Pioneer Leadership Development Program. Each O∆K member is paired with a sophomore in the program to cultivate leadership qualities and become confident in those abilities.

My experiences have instilled values of empathy, patience, and encouragement. For my future career, I want to practice these values as an occupational therapist to better serve others and their needs.

MELISSA BOSWELL University of Akron Diane and Tom Vukovich Scholarship Current Study: Stanford University, Biomedical Engineering, Ph.D. Melissa studied biomedical engineering at Akron and spent a year working as an engineer and conducting research in Cape Town, South Africa. She is pursuing an advanced degree to combine orthopedic research with computational modeling to evaluate injuries. She is passionate about STEM careers and actively mentors elementary, middle, and high school girls in science and math.

JACOB CALAHAN Auburn University Auburn University Circle Endowed Fund in Memory of Dean Katharine Cater Current Study: Auburn University, Pharmacy, Ph.D. Jacob is the first student to receive the Auburn/ Cater Scholarship. As president of the Auburn Circle, Jacob works to induct leaders from athletics, ROTC, and the arts to diversify the circle.

Success goes beyond having strong academics to being able to express strong character and a servant heart, as well.

GRACE CHAO St. Mary’s College of Maryland John D. Morgan Scholarship Current Study: Johns Hopkins University, International Development Studies, M.A. Grace led the St. Mary’s Circle to volunteer for a local farm, donate school supplies, and create care packages for homeless individuals. She also used a triple major in psychology, economics, and Chinese to focus on her passion of how behavioral economics may be applied to international development. She hopes to lead this field and was recently selected by the Social Enterprise Accelerator Fund to work with social enterprises around the world to help solve strategic and operational challenges. In addition to her studies, she also works part-time for Hopkins’ SAIS China-Africa Research Initiative.

This scholarship will allow me to live closer to Columbia University, where living costs are higher. A scholarship will give me greater opportunity to evolve as a leader and in my education and service endeavors.

KAYLA COUTTS University of Maryland, College Park University of Maryland, College Park/Sigma

Circle Scholarship Current Study: Columbia University, Physical Therapy, Ph.D. While captain of the club soccer team, Kayla served as Alpha Chi Omega’s new member educator, as well as dance coordinator with Best Buddies, an organization that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities. She plans to use her physical therapy degree to lead an emerging field in discovering connections between physical therapy and dance therapy for neurological patients.

BHAKTI DESAI Birmingham-Southern College Robert and Mildred Blount Scholarship Current Study: University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dental Medicine, D.M.D. Bhakti’s undergraduate work with Birmingham’s Cahaba Valley Healthcare Clinic fueled her desire to give back to the community. She plans to start a dental clinic to reach out to underserved populations. As circle president, Bhakti created a breakfast for students to strengthen relationships between faculty members and students.

TRAVIS GOODLOE, III Hampden-Sydney College Current Study: University of South Alabama, Medicine, M.D. As a first-year medical student, Travis’s childhood dream of becoming a doctor continues to take shape. While at HampdenSydney, Travis helped raise $9,000 for gifts and essentials for children in need, served on the student court, and as Hampden-Sydney Journal of Sciences editor.

JAMES DRASBEK Southern Virginia University Chellgren Family Endowed Scholarship Current Study: Virginia Commonwealth University, Health Care Administration, M.H.A. In addition to helping establish the SVU circle, James worked with a summer camp dedicated to teaching leadership to young adults. He has interned with the Remote Area Medical Clinic in Virginia and ultimately hopes to work in hospital administration.

JENNY JUEHRING University of Iowa Current Study: Washington University School of Law, J.D. As circle co-president, Jenny oversaw the university’s faculty award program and the Dad of the Year award.

She maintained a 3.9 GPA majoring in international human rights law and studying democratization and the developing world. Jenny presented her research at the Midwest Political Science Association Conference in Chicago and at the Student Conference on U.S. Affairs.

University of Baltimore Current Study: University of Baltimore, Accounting and Business Advisory, M.A. Alphabet soup may best describe Jennifer Kelly’s career. As an undergraduate, she interned with the FBI and is currently enrolled in a MABA (Master in Accounting and Business Advisory) program. She hopes to become a CPA and continue to use the leadership skills she expanded through O∆K.

QUINCY KISSACK St. Norbert College Current Study: University of Maryland, College Park, Education in Student Affairs, M.A. While a St. Norbert student, Quincy volunteered for the Emerging Leaders program, Oxfam America, and as a First Year Experience mentor. She worked for the Sturzl Center for Community Service and developed a leadership workshop series with the Leadership, Student Engagement, and First Year office. Quincy helped found the St. Norbert Circle and organized service projects with the local Boys and Girls Club.

ALIEHS LEE Southwestern University Current Study: Medicine, M.D. Aliehs and circle members organized the Bystander Intervention Program, designed to train students to intervene in emergency situations such as bullying, racism, and sexual assault. In addition to building the circle to recognize leaders from all five phases, she serves in the Catalyst Leadership Program. Aleihs has dreamed of becoming a pediatrician because of her close relationship with her own doctor. She writes, “my pediatrician…made sure that I was treated properly and with tender care in any situation I faced. Being a pediatrician means you help shape [children’s] lives to become extraordinary adults…pediatricians are comforters, counselors, teachers, and much more.”

RYAN LEEYOUNG University of Maryland, College Park University of Maryland, College Park/Sigma Circle Scholarship Current Study: Johns Hopkins University, Biotechnology Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, M.S. Ryan seeks to apply his business background to the pharmaceutical industry. He was working as an equity research analyst and decided to further his science education. Ryan recently met up with a Sigma Circle O∆K member in his new town. “More important [than recognition] is to be supportive of those with whom I share this common bond of leadership and achievement.”

JIA SIANG (BEN) LEONG MELISSA MICEK Jacksonville University Rupert Nelson Latture Scholarship Current Study: London School of Economics and Political Science and Peking University of China Ben revised the circle constitution and bylaws to reflect O∆K values.

His internship with the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville provided him “the opportunity to network with distinguished leaders and gain knowledge beyond the classroom.” His interest lies in the outcomes of China and India’s rapid economic growth, and his ultimate career goal is to work for the United Nations Development Program.

KATIE MCGRATH Wright State University Diane and Tom Vukovich Scholarship Current Study: Wright State University, Student Affairs in Higher Education, M.A. Katie, circle co-president, describes how student affairs professionals helped develop her leadership skills and “saw in me what I could not see in myself.” Her mentors spent hours making her the best she could be and, in turn, “inspired me to want to make a difference in the lives of students.”

JENNIFER MCILVAINE Stockton University Current Study: Stockton University, Communication Disorders, M.S. Jennifer is driven to become a speech language pathologist. Her experience volunteering at the Special Olympics and with individuals on the autism spectrum “always instilled in me a renewed sense of appreciation for life.” According to Jennifer, these experiences and her circle presidency “allowed me to advance my leadership skills and will serve as a highlight on my achievement list.”

Lynchburg College Current Study: University of Delaware, Public Administration, M.A. Melissa served as a model leader for her circle, but she is most of proud of developing O∆K Day to introduce the student body to O∆K. Melissa served as a legislative assistant intern for the Virginia House of Delegates and participated in the Virginia Commission on Parole Review and the No Kid Hungry initiative. Melissa is applying to the Delaware Legislative Fellows Program while working on her master’s.

SAVANNAH NORAY Hillsdale College Current Study: Montana State University, Applied Economics, M.A. From presenting on women’s empowerment in Nepal to researching the craft brewery market, Savannah is always examining the numbers. She is currently working on her master’s degree in applied economics and has a goal to complete her doctoral work in economics before pursuing a career in international development research. “Development economics requires humility: a willingness to give up failed projects and a dedication to evaluating success without bias.”

ANNE PARSIOLA Louisiana State University Current Study: Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Medicine, M.D. From a rural town in Louisiana, Anne plans to return to her roots to practice medicine. During college, she worked in a biochemistry laboratory and at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic in her hometown to gain clinical experience.

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University Current Study: Florida A&M College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharm.D

Leaders

Hermán is completing his third year of Florida A&M’s pharmacy program. As circle vice president, Hermán is highly involved in community service events, such as cleaning the circle’s adopt-a-highway street, joining the annual AIDS walk, and donating 300 pounds of food to a local nonprofit.

POLLY RICKETTS University of Alabama Current Study: University of Alabama School of Law, J.D. Polly led the Living Legend program, which honored Dr. Judy Bonner, the first female president of UA, for her contributions to the university. The event touched on one of O∆K’s cornerstones: the meeting of intergenerational—collegiate and alumni—leaders. Polly collaborated with the Auburn Circle to plan the presentation of the James E. Foy O∆K Sportsmanship Trophy during the Iron Bowl. She served as director for Beat Auburn Beat Hunger, vice president of the business honors program, and an investment officer at Forza Financial, a microfinance institution founded by honors students.

KRISTIN SHEETZ Randolph-Macon College Current Study: Virginia Commonwealth University, Chemical Engineering, M.S. Kristin served as circle president and took leadership roles in the science honor society, Chi Beta Phi, and the pre-health society. She overhauled Randolph’s Leadership Fellows Program by boosting enrollment and planning events. She seeks to excel in her field and serve as a role model for women in science. “I believe it is very important for women to have a safe place to encourage each other and work through tough times in a field mostly dominated by men,” she says.

JAMIE SPINELLO University of Florida Current Study: University of Denver, Social Work, M.A. Jamie helped lead the Gators of Tomorrow program, served as a teaching assistant, and mentored a new O∆K member. Jamie aspires to tie her knowledge of psychology and criminology to families in crisis. She writes, “Coupling my psychology degree with an additional degree in criminology integrated my study of mental and emotional factors of human behavior, its causes and methods for prevention.”

SARAH STAYER St. Mary’s College of Maryland Current Study: Miami University, Student Affairs in Higher Education, M.A. Sarah’s interest in higher education and Title IX led her to develop a capstone study that examined how that legislation is implemented on college campuses nationwide.

Sarah is passionate about making a difference in the lives of students and promoting gender equality on college campuses.

Sarah was editor of SMCM’s Journal of Social Sciences, a resident assistant, Dean’s Advisory Council member, and Title IX Fellow, working to plan and implement programs to prevent sexual misconduct.

Palavi recently finished her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Since her induction, she has worked tirelessly to improve recruitment for O∆K and expand its impact on campus.

As a member of the executive board of the Georgia Tech Neuroscience Club, Palavi displayed an overwhelming passion in the fight against Parkinson’s disease and ALS. She has also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to provide funding for the shelter and protection of Nigerian refugees.

LEADER OF THE YEAR

Her current work, aimed at providing outlets to the LGBT community and those experiencing mental health issues, is reflective of her intense passion for community service. Palavi was also the captain of Nazaaqat, a prestigious Bollywood dance team at Georgia Tech, and is trained in both classical and Bollywood fusion dance.

Palavi is enrolled in the University of Toledo’s College of Medicine and Life Sciences. Congratulations!

Honorees

The Gen. Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year program celebrates five exceptional collegiate members of Omicron Delta Kappa. The honorees were selected by the National Awards Committee chaired by John Herbst. Also, each of their circles received a $300 programming grant.

These five students were recognized at the National Convention and Leadership Conference, and they embody the best of collegiate leadership. With the support of the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation, each will receive a scholarship of $1,000. The National Leader of the Year will receive an additional $3,000 in scholarship support.

PASQUALE TOSCANO

Initiated into O∆K in December 2014, Pasquale Toscano will complete his undergraduate degree at Washington and Lee University with majors in English and classics in December. His work as vice president of the Alpha Circle at W&L has been instrumental in selecting new initiates and is demonstrative of his commitment to the mission of O∆K. Pasquale is also a young man of tremendous perseverance. In 2013, he was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle. As a result of his accident, he was paralyzed, and doctors questioned whether he would walk again. However, his determination enabled him not only to walk again but to flourish as a student and a leader.

In addition to maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Pasquale dedicates much of his time to the Student Judicial Committee. He has served as both class justice and chairman of the committee. Throughout his service, he has displayed tremendous dedication to the health and safety of his fellow students. After graduating, Pasquale plans to pursue a Ph.D. in literature. Pasquale’s strong academic record makes him a worthy representative of the scholarship pillar. He was recently named a 2017 Rhodes Scholar.

RACHEL BELLI

Rachel Belli recently graduated from Florida Southern College with her undergraduate degree majoring in broadcast, print, and online media and advertising and public relations. In addition to serving as circle president of O∆K, Rachel was also president of her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, and of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communications Association honor society. She sought to make her circle’s involvement in student life a priority.

Her passion for broadcasting lead her to single-handedly produce the campus news show, FSC Today, and work as a project leader and reporter for Go Healthy FSC TV. Rachel has completed internships with both CBS and Fox News. She is currently finishing a newsroom internship with WTSP and hopes to attend the Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism to continue research in a field in which she is passionate. She embodies the journalism, speech, and mass media pillar.

TIFFANY BRASBY

Tiffany Brasby was the co-president of the Morningside College O∆K Circle’s Into the Streets event. She led the effort to coordinate 2,500 collective hours of community service from 77% of the college’s students.

She recently graduated with Bachelor of Arts with a major in math education and continues to remain passionate about education. She is a member of the honor societies Kappa Mu Epsilon (math) and Kappa Delta Pi (education). In addition to collecting numerous awards on the softball field, she volunteered as the head coach for a local high school girls’ softball team. Tiffany’s athletic achievements, combined with her scholarship and community accomplishments, earned her the Leader of the Year in the athletics phase.

CHRISTINA WALKER

Christina Walker began her journey with Omicron Delta Kappa in January 2013 as a new initiate. As president of her circle at the University of Kentucky, she was involved in numerous efforts to provide aid to homeless and underprivileged individuals. She recently graduated Bachelor of Arts with a major in communications with a minor in music. In addition to her many campus accomplishments and philanthropic work, Christina served her country in the United States Army from 2007-10. During her military service, Christina was deployed for one year in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Christina is consistently looking for ways to help those in need. Her work in “A Cause For the Holidays” provided care and support for children with disabilities or financial hardships during the holiday season. Moreover, while maintaining a near perfect GPA and graduating summa cum laude, Christina balanced two jobs. Christina is pursuing her law degree at the University of Kentucky. Her exemplary service to the military, her university, and the community at large make her a great representative of the pillar of service.

CHERYL M. HOGLE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS

Valerie Guzman and Billiee Pendleton-Parker The award is named for Cheryl Hogle, the first woman to serve as O∆K’s national president and a long-time circle advisor at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Valerie Guzman, circle coordinator for the Grand Valley State University Circle, served as the local arrangements chairperson for the 2016 Biennial Convention and Leadership Conference.

She served on the National Advisory Council and as a member of the Research and Curriculum Development Committee. A longtime StrengthsQuest educator, Valerie developed the Strengths curriculum for the 2013 Drive-In workshops and centennial convention.

Billiee Pendleton-Parker recently retired from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Billiee has been a trusted friend, confidante, and cheerleader to hundreds of circle members through her 15 years of service. According to her nomination letter, Billiee has “empowered and inspired O∆K students to achieve. She advised circle leadership on efforts to create a LGBTQIA resource center, advocate for a new student union, run a mental health think tank, and create an inclusive postsecondary academy. The true breadth of Billiee’s impact on her O∆K students and the broader society can never be fully expressed, but each of us can attest to the growth she fostered in ourselves.”

Larry Burke Larry Burke, a 1974 Florida Southern College collegiate initiate, has served as faculty secretary/circle coordinator for the FSC Circle for more than a decade and is the 2016 Morlan-Bishop

honoree. He is also an associate professor of music. His nominator, Rachel Belli, wrote that Larry led the FSC Circle “to receive the ranking of Superior Circle and encouraged us to strive to do better each year. Professor Burke makes the time to be at each of our events, despite his busy schedule and various roles he has at Florida Southern. Through his guidance, we have become what we believe to be the most esteemed honor society on campus.”

Joel Hermann, Matthew Hibdon, Brooke Supple, and Krista Wilhelm Joel Hermann, a 2007 Maryville University initiate, entered student affairs after graduation. In 2013, he was the guiding force in establishing the Fontbonne University Circle. Known for its engaging social media strategy and involvement on campus and beyond, the circle is a 2015 and 2016 Superior Circle honoree.

While a graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University, Matthew Hibdon wondered if there was a place for Omicron Delta Kappa at MTSU. Matthew found partners in the institution’s honors college, and he helped establish the circle in 2010. He was integral in coordinating the archives display for the centennial convention.

Brooke Leckey Supple has been actively engaged with O∆K since her initiation into the University of Maryland, College Park Circle in 2001. Brooke’s leadership contributions are seen in the Sigma Circle’s recognition for hosting Drive-In workshops, record in producing scholarship recipients, and the O∆K fountain on campus, where all circle members’ names are recorded.

Krista Wilhelm serves as the circle coordinator for the East Carolina University Circle and was initiated into O∆K in 2010 at ECU. The East Carolina Circle hosted regional Drive-In workshops, sent numerous members to the recent biennial conventions, and continues to have a great impact on campus.

2017 Drive-In Workshops This spring, O∆K will host regionally-located Drive-In workshops. The curriculum provides participants with a high impact, low-cost opportunity to network with fellow O∆K members, hear about best practices at other circles, and engage in personalized and organizational leadership development. Both students and faculty officers benefit from the program through increased exposure to, and education on, the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully and effectively make O∆K a prominent leadership organization on campus.

Our goal is to provide a positive learning environment where participants can grow and improve as officers, reach their potential as circle leaders, and more fully understand and utilize the resources provided by the national headquarters.

Collaboration

Many O∆K circles organize or participate in a program to serve their community. While many circles serve on O∆K’s National Day of Service held in April every year, others serve their campus and community throughout the year.

Annual Speed Mentoring Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive

The University of Redlands The University of Redlands student leaders participated in their campus Thanksgiving basket food drive, which provided a full meal to five families for the holiday. The circle is currently planning their Relay for Life event in the spring.

Appreciation to the U.S. Military

Concordia University Irvine Students wrote notes of appreciation to the United States military servicemen and women. These notes were included in care packages sent to deployed soldiers. The students discussed sacrifices made by those who serve our country.

Hamline University When O∆K leaders sought to improve their leadership skills, they chose a mentoring program. Students invited leaders across campus and the local community to meet with students on campus. They matched each student with three professionals in their field of interest.

Students met mentors in speed dating style where the pair meet and talked for 30 minutes before the student moved to the next mentor’s table.

O∆K Circles Making a Difference Across the Country Etiquette Dinner and Community Leader Recognition

Hillsdale College Hillsdale members organized a formal dinner to teach students etiquette. The circle also invited key members of the community to the dinner to thank them for their leadership and service to the community.

SUNY Oswego Circle leaders organized their sixth annual Future Oswego Leaders Conference. The conference invites all students to hear speakers and presentations from graduates in various fields.

Middle Tennessee State University The MTSU Circle presented True Blue Leadership Day, inviting professionals from the community and several faculty members to share their leadership philosophy and knowledge with students.

The circle invited all students to attend the five presentations on campus.

Dance Marathon

Loyola University New Orleans O∆K leaders organized a dance marathon to raise money for the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. The circle partnered with the SGA to plan a fun event with food, games, raffles, and prizes. More than 120 students participated, and the event raised $4,500 for the hospital.

OMICRON DELTA KAPPA FOUNDATION PILLARS OF LEADERSHIP AWARDS The Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation honors leaders with its Pillars of Leadership Awards during each Biennial Convention and Leadership Conference. These awards recognize individuals representing the five phases of collegiate leadership celebrated

by O∆K. These honors recognize individuals who have achieved considerable success in their chosen field of endeavor.

Tom Bowen

Tom Bowen is the 2016 recipient of the Pillars of Leadership Award in Athletics. A 2014 honoris causa initiate of the University of Memphis Circle, Tom was a featured speaker at the 2016 Biennial Convention and Leadership Conference.

Professionally, Tom has served as the athletics director at San Jose State University and the University of Memphis. Previously, he spent three years serving as the director of community affairs and the executive director of the 49ers Foundation for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. His other Division I experience at the collegiate level includes athletics administration positions at the University of California and Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif.

Virginia Edwards

Virginia “Ginny” Edwards was initiated into the University of Kentucky Circle as a collegiate member in 1976. As an undergraduate, Ginny was the editor of The Kentucky Kernel, the daily student newspaper at UK. Ginny was the president of Editorial Projects in Education, the nonprofit corporation that publishes Education Week and edweek.org, from March 1997 until she stepped down in July 2016. She also served as the editor-in-chief of Education Week, the premier news outlet of record for pre-collegiate education in the U.S. from 1989 to 2016.

Ginny is the 2016 Pillars of Leadership in Scholarship honoree.

Kevin Kruger

Kevin Kruger currently serves as president of NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

Kevin was initiated into the University of Maryland, College Park Circle in 1984 as a staff member. Before his career at NASPA, Kevin worked for 15 years at the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. During his tenure at the University of Maryland, he worked in orientation, student activities, leadership development, admissions, and with the vice president for student affairs. He has published and presented nationally on leadership development, using technology in student affairs administration, and international education. He is a regular lecturer on technology in student affairs, assessment, and student learning. Kevin is the 2016 Pillars of Leadership in Communications award winner.

Richard Williams

Richard “Rick” Williams, a 2001 collegiate initiate of the Grand Valley State University Circle, is a man on a mission—or several of them, all built around the concept of service. Rick is an Army veteran, attorney, and civic leader who most notably serves on the Shriners Hospitals for Children® board of trustees. Professionally, Rick works as a consultant for biotech companies.

He was a major donor to O∆K’s 2016 Biennial Convention and Leadership Conference and is active in several other community organizations in greater Grand Rapids, Mich.

The 2016 Pillars of Leadership in Arts will be presented and announced at a later date.

eputation is important, but character is more important. Reputation is what people see, what people comment about, and what you become known for. Character is about what you do when no one is watching. I suggest that as you continue to develop and grow as leaders—and make our societies, our communities, our college campuses better—that you always engage in, ‘is what I’m doing building my character as opposed to my reputation?’”

He was a standout athlete in high school and majored in chemistry and math at Centre College. He earned a Rhodes Scholarship and attended the University of Oxford. He then went to Harvard Law School and worked as general counsel for General Electric.

Raymond Burse gave students this advice as he accepted the Laurel Crowned Circle award, the highest individual honor awarded by O∆K, during O∆K’s national convention in June 2016. Burse is perhaps most known for donating $90,000 of his $350,000 salary as Kentucky State University’s president so that all of the university’s workers would earn a living wage of $10.25 an hour.

Surround yourself with people smarter than you “You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room, but you need to be able to get the smartest people in the room to share their ideas,” Burse shared during a KSU leadership conference. He went on: “Good leaders know the talent of the people around you. Everyone comes with a unique set of skills and values.”

While his decisions at KSU earned him a reputation for unique and powerful leadership, he developed his character throughout his life.

He grew up as the youngest of thirteen in a small town in Kentucky.

His family “did not have much” according to his interview with CNN. He said, “Going through that process I learned a lot about sacrificing, waiting your turn, and being thankful for what you have.”

Listen Burse likes to manage by walking around and talking to people. He joked that his colleagues didn’t always enjoy it, but it was a way for him to learn about challenges and successes at the ground level.

What did Burse learn about leadership along the way?

Burse sums up his leadership lessons in three ways:

Manage pressure Burse discusses the courage and bravery it takes to be a leader. He shared: “You will make wrong decisions. You have to be thick skinned enough to admit you made a mistake.

None of us are perfect.”

Burses’ favorite quote about leadership from John Quincy Adams states: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” From a small town in Kentucky, to the athletic fields of Centre College, to the offices of General Electric and to the president’s desk at KSU, we’re betting Burse has inspired a few people along the way.

Comings and Goings

A message from the Foundation President In the last issue of The Circle, we celebrated three longserving members of the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation Board of Trustees: Gene Vance, Sally Jones Hill, and Calder Sinclair. They have been personally generous to the Foundation and each given numerous hours of service. The legacy of leadership provided by these three volunteers is significant; however, as president of the Foundation Board of Trustees, I am pleased to introduce you to eight new individuals who are already contributing to the efforts to advance O∆K. Matthew Clifford, as O∆K’s National President, serves on the Foundation board and as a member of the Trusteeship and Governance Committee. A 2001 initiate of the Davidson College Circle, Matt has served as an advisor to two circles.

In addition to his undergraduate degree, he earned a master’s degree at the University of South Carolina and his doctorate from the University of North Florida. Matt was recently named Wake Forest’s associate dean of students.

Virginia Edwards is a 1977 initiate of the University of Kentucky Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. She earned her undergraduate degree at Kentucky and is currently a member of the Foundation Finance Committee. Ginny was the president of Editorial Projects in Education from 19972016.

W. Jeffery Edwards, O∆K’s National Counsel, is a 1981 initiate of the Alpha Circle at Washington and Lee University.

Jeff also earned his law degree at W&L. He is a member of the Foundation’s Trusteeship and Governance Committee.

As a partner with the law firm of Hunton and Williams, Jeff’s litigation experience includes a variety of subject matters in different forums.

Richard Johnson is a 2005 initiate of the University of Richmond Circle. He had a significant role in the development and execution of the fundraising campaign to purchase the Lexington train station for O∆K’s headquarters.

Rich received his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond and his master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Since 2002, Rich has been chairman, president, and CEO of The Wilton Companies.

John Robitscher is a 1981 initiate of the Emory University Circle. He earned his associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees Emory. He is currently a member of the Foundation’s Investment Committee. John is currently the CEO of the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors.

Andristine Robinson is a 1999 initiate of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Circle. Andristine served O∆K as the national vice president for extension from 2006-12 and is a current member of the Joint Audit Committee.

Professionally, she is the director of Institutional Initiatives in the Office of the President at Prince George’s Community College. Andristine has an undergraduate degree from Lincoln University (Pa.) and a master’s degree from Marshall University.

Marc Slotnick is a 1987 initiate of the circle at the University of Miami where he obtained his undergraduate and law degrees. He chairs the Trusteeship and Governance Committee and has been a leader in the fundraising efforts supporting the circle at Miami. Marc is a partner of Bailey & Slotnick, PLLC. Jeff Stone is a 1977 initiate of the circle at Auburn University where he earned his undergraduate degree. He is a member of the Foundation’s Development Committee. Jeff currently serves as executive vice president for Brasfield & Gorrie and serves on the company’s Executive Board.

WHEREAS, Carl Bolte had a vision for O∆K to have a song; and RESOLUTION – OFFICIAL WORK GROUPS AND AD HOC WHEREAS, Sally Albrecht took his lyrics and added additional COMMITTEES words and a musical arrangement; and WHEREAS, there are always opportunities to develop a new perspective on the operations of Omicron Delta Kappa; and WHEREAS, the convention participants joined in song to perform the O∆K anthem for the first time during the 2016 Biennial Convention WHEREAS, these explorations often involve heart-felt discussions of and Leadership Conference; language, terminology, and practice; and WHEREAS, the Diversity and Inclusion Work Group, Faculty Officer Terminology Work Group, and Ritual Review Ad Hoc Committee each took the work of their teams seriously and thoughtfully;

Larry Burke –

Leader, Circle Advisor, Musician, Professor, and Friend As I travel the country and share what is special about O∆K, I often discuss our intentionally intergenerational nature—one of the most distinctive and special features of our Society. O∆K was founded with the intent to bring together individuals from all campus roles and stages of leadership journeys. Although primarily an organization which engages collegiate members, Omicron Delta Kappa also actively involves faculty, staff, and administrators as well as alumni and community members. These inter-generational connections and collaborations serve to advance our host institutions and contribute to our mission to develop the community leaders of tomorrow.

The Robert L. Bishop and Robert Morlan Award recognizes an outstanding Faculty Advisor or Circle Coordinator for his or her dedication to the ideals of O∆K. The award celebrates the importance of the adults who interact with, support, and encourage collegiate members on a daily basis. To qualify for the award, the recipient must have been an active voting faculty or staff member of the circle for at least five years and have served as a faculty advisor or circle coordinator for at least three years.

This year’s honoree, Dr. Larry Burke, from Florida Southern College (FSC), is the embodiment of what our organization cherishes: faculty and staff who assist the collegiate leaders of today in their advancement in becoming the community leaders of tomorrow.

Jenna Iacovino, FSC Circle President, noted the impact that Burke has had on her and other circle members. She said, “I have had the pleasure and honor of working with Professor Burke at FSC in the music department both as a professor and as the Circle Coordinator. He goes above and beyond to encourage students to get as involved as possible while exploring the opportunities O∆K has to offer both locally and nationally. Along with being extremely knowledgeable about the organization, he shares his knowledge with our members on a daily basis and is passionate about recognizing students who accomplish noteworthy goals.”

Burke was presented his award at the 2016 Biennial Convention and Leadership Conference. For me, it was a great pleasure to watch his face light up when the award was announced. Later, he commented on what receiving the award meant to him.

“Serving as Faculty Secretary for the Florida Southern College Circle has been one of the great joys of my teaching career. I generally enjoy all of our students, but to work with the ‘best of the best’ is not only fulfilling but a great honor. It is especially gratifying to serve in this position since I became a member of O∆K as a student here. Being selected for the Robert L. Morlan and Robert Bishop Award was a great surprise; there are so many devoted and deserving faculty officers and I hold this as one of the great honors I have ever received,” said Burke.

When Burke was first initiated into O∆K, Dr. Richard Burnette was the Faculty Secretary at FSC. Burnette was the first recipient of what was then called the Robert L. Morlan Outstanding Faculty Secretary Award.

Burke’s final comment about the honor was, “My deepest and most sincere thanks for being cited for the award, and additional thanks to all those who serve as circle officers.”
