The Omicron Delta Kappa Society, Inc., the National Leadership Honor Society for college students, recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership, and exemplary character. O∆K® was founded December 3, 1914, at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. by 15 student and faculty leaders. Omicron Delta Kappa was the first college honor society of a national scope to give recognition for meritorious leadership and service in extracurricular activities; membership in Omicron Delta Kappa continues to be a mark of highest distinction and honor. The Society is now present on the campuses of more than 300 colleges and universities around the country.

Facilitating the collaborative efforts of leaders from different aspects of the collegiate experience is the hallmark of Omicron Delta Kappa.

The motives that guided our founders sprang from the desire to bring together in one body, for the general good of the institution and its community, leaders from all parts of the college or university with the mission of cooperating in worthwhile endeavors. By encouraging collegiate leaders to work together on matters of shared interest, O∆K supports our members in developing an appreciation for civility, varying perspectives, contrasting strategies for problem-solving, and conflict resolution.

O∆K’s annual report issue is a review of our 2017-18 programs and events which are highlighted by how they fulfill Omicron Delta Kappa’s mission to: ● Identify, honor, and develop leaders in collegiate and community life; ● Encourage collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and alumni to advance leadership; and ● Promote and publicize the ideals of leadership including service, scholarship, character, fellowship, and integrity.

Omicron Delta Kappa members go on to fulfill the expectations of leadership by solving problems locally and globally by serving in education, the arts, journalism, healthcare, and many other fields.

The common thread among O∆K members is their dedication to succeed and make a difference. Our Society is proud to support outstanding collegiate leaders in the following ways: ● Providing scholarship opportunities for collegiate members in need; ● Supporting member travel to the national conference for learning, leadership, and networking; ● Offering career resources including post-baccalaureate internship opportunities;

Encouraging community service; and,

● Supporting the creation of additional programs such as the Stone Ethical Leadership Challenge and the Campus Conversations Initiative.

The volunteer and philanthropic partnerships of our members and donors make each of these programs possible. We appreciate your dedication to developing outstanding student leaders. Celebrating Exceptional Leaders A message from the National President Dear members, Each year, the annual report issue of The Circle chronicles the ongoing story of our Society. From our founding in 1914 to today, Omicron Delta Kappa continues its commitment to develop individuals as leaders, support communities of leaders, and advance the ideals of leadership including scholarship, service, integrity, character, and fellowship.

The 2018 Foundation Scholarship recipients and Dougherty National Leader of the Year honorees, profiled in this issue, make us proud. These exceptional members have worked on projects ranging from drone safety to sustainable water initiatives to using music as therapy for individuals with Alzheimer’s.

Our circles also continue to thrive. During the 2017-18 academic year, O∆K welcomed 8,120 new members and added seven new circles. Also, we were pleased to re-charter our circles at Arizona State University and East Tennessee State University bringing the number of active circles to 304. Of these circles, 15 were named Presidential Circle of Excellence award winners in recognition of their sustained commitment to quality. I encourage you to read more about our circles and their accomplishments on page 32.

One thing we hear from attendees of our biennial national convention is how valuable it is to the life of a circle. The Society Board of Directors studied this notion and concluded that a transition was in order. We held our “last” biennial national convention in 2018. Beginning in 2020, O∆K will start offering an annual national leadership conference. This is an exciting development in our Society, and I look forward to our new, annual gathering.

During the 2018 conference, we announced several new resources for circles including a diversity and inclusion toolkit to help circles develop programming

and recruit members from a broader population of collegiate leaders. We also introduced Campus Conversations, a program designed to assist circles in creating a safe and productive space for sharing ideas, perspectives, and plans for action on polarizing topics. The Stone Ethical Leadership Challenge was also introduced. This program includes review and discussion of difficult situations that leaders may face and is intended to help our members better understand the moral, legal, and practical considerations of leadership. These resources are critical for our members and will help develop the skills necessary to navigate increasingly challenging circumstances in our communities. I am grateful to the volunteers, staff, and gifts that have contributed to these efforts.

One of the things discussed by the Society’s national leadership is the importance of collaboration.

Collaboration among leaders of all phases of campus life, including faculty, staff, and students, is what sets Omicron Delta Kappa apart from other honor societies. I want to take this opportunity to thank each of our donors and the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation for our partnership in continuing to secure the resources to benefit our collegiate members through programming, scholarships, and other member benefits.

I remain honored to serve as the national president for Omicron Delta Kappa and am grateful for the support provided by our members. Thank you to all who continue to advocate for today’s collegiate leaders, the community leaders of tomorrow.

LEADER OF THE YEAR

FAITH PINHO WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY JOURNALISM, SPEECH, AND THE MASS MEDIA Faith Pinho, an initiate of the Alpha Circle at Washington and Lee University, developed her love for communications and writing at an early age. She wrote two 100-page historical fiction novels at eight years old and a weekly newsletter peppered with stories, town gossip, and jokes at the age of 12.

Faith completed internships with WBUR, Boston’s NPR station. She also covered metro issues and politics for The Washington Times. She received two awards from the Society of Professional Journalism, Region 2, for pieces that aired on WMRA public radio. Following graduation, she worked with The Indy Star newspaper in Indianapolis as a recipient of the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship.

Honorees

The Omicron Delta Kappa Leader of the Year program is named in memory of Gen. Russell E. Dougherty, United States Air Force.

Each O∆K circle selects an outstanding student to be named their Circle Leader of the Year. These students receive a certificate and are invited to apply for the National Leader of the Year Award.

The National Awards Committee recognizes five finalists on a national level, one for each phase of campus life: scholarship; athletics; campus or community service; journalism, speech, and the mass media; and creative and performing arts.

Each Leader of the Year finalist receives a $1,000 graduate/ professional studies scholarship. Of the five finalists, one student is selected to receive the Gen. Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year Award. The recipient of the National Leader of the Year Award receives a $4,000 scholarship to be used toward graduate-level study.

REID LOVELESS GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS For Reid Loveless, an initiate of the Georgia Southern University Circle, a freshman course in genetics is what sparked his journey into understanding the significance of past and current discoveries. As Reid explains, “Ultimately, my research and clinical shadowing experiences over the years have directed me towards a career as a physician-scientist.”

In his quest to understand cellular and molecular biology, Reid began his sophomore year working on a project that would better understand the role of a specific human protein in metastasis, the spread of cancer. Through the use of a humanized zebrafish tumor model, Reid is hopeful that his current work, along with his honor thesis, will continue to lead to a step closer in future cancer patient therapies.

Reid’s determination can be equally matched in his extra-curricular activities. From the start of his college career, he served as the president, vice president, and secretary of his university’s wrestling team, and his duties included arranging travel logistics to tournaments while managing finances and coaching. He also served as treasurer and social coordinator for the school’s climbing team which competes both outdoors and indoors. Furthermore, he was the secretary of his O∆K circle at Georgia Southern. As a result of Reid’s dedication to both the wrestling team and the climbing club, he is recognized as the Leader of the Year in the athletics phase.

VRINDA KUMAR SUNY PLATTSBURGH CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

JACOB THRASHER

An initiate of the SUNY Plattsburgh Circle, Vrinda Kumar’s passion for issues of public health and social justice is derived from a culmination of experiences that have given her a first-hand look into the world around her.

UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS Finding himself caught between two passions – science and art – Jacob Thrasher decided to take the best of both and pursue a dual career in biochemistry and editorial cartooning. An initiate of the University of Mississippi Circle, Jacob worked in various labs and for multiple news outlets during his time as an undergraduate.

As an undergraduate student, Vrinda was a researcher for Title IX investigations and a head resident assistant.

She led SUNY Plattsburgh Student Association as its vice president and then president. Vrinda is currently working to publish independent research on substance abuse and its connection to sexual assault. She is also the founder of SUNY Plattsburgh CARES, which helps to expose students to issues of discrimination and intersectionality. She returned to SUNY Plattsburgh for her graduate studies and to work as a resident director.

Through his role as vice president and president of his O∆K circle, Jacob was able to be part of the freedom of speech panel as an editorial cartoonist. He is also a member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. He began his doctoral studies in biochemistry at Yale University in the fall of 2018 and plans to continue with his editorial cartooning.

Leader of the Year AWARD WINNER

SARA FRANK EMORY UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Sara Frank’s dedication to contributing to her community is reflected in her participation in many extracurricular activities. Through her role as president of O∆K’s Mu Circle at Emory University, she was able to organize O∆K information sessions and fundraisers while promoting the Society’s ideals.

She had served as a student investigator for the Emory College Honor Council. Sara was also active in Emory’s Jewish community by leading weekly worship services at Hillel.

Her community engagement has also extended into artistic expression. She hosted a weekly radio show, wrote for the station’s blog and magazine, and was also a member of an a capella group and served as its musical director.

Sara is looking forward to continuing her passion for ethical and legal thought in law school at the University of Virginia. As a result of Sara’s long list of accomplishments and well-rounded leadership, the National Awards Committee selected Sara not only as the representative in scholarship phase of campus life but also as the 2018 Gen. Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year.

uring the most recent Omicron Delta Kappa national convention, collegiate members and circle advisors were introduced to several new programs and available resources.

Campus Conversations

Stone Ethical Leadership Challenge Thanks to the generosity of Linda and Jeff Stone (both Auburn University, 1977), Omicron Delta Kappa developed a series of scenarios that involve one or more significant ethical challenges. Ultimately, the Stone Ethical Leadership Challenge will offer a series of programs from a ninety-minute session to full-day ethical immersion program. Materials will be free to circles, and trained facilitators will be available at a nominal cost.

Circles have access to the facilitator guides and visual presentations so that they may coordinate programs for members and other individuals on campus to explore particular and other similar challenges.

The members of the 2016-18 National Advisory Council, under the leadership of Michelle Burke (University of South Carolina – Columbia, 1997), introduced this initiative at the Nashville convention. This signature program is designed to assist circles in creating a safe and productive space for sharing ideas, perspectives, and plans for action on polarizing topics. It builds relationships among leaders across the breadth of a community and encourages collaboration to address larger societal problems.

Annual National Leadership Conference Omicron Delta Kappa held its first national convention in 1920 in Baltimore, Maryland. Throughout the majority of the Society’s history, the conference was held on a biennial basis. Attending a convention is one of the most important moments in the O∆K experience. Participation in a convention supports and enhances circle operations, and it facilitates the continuation of momentum for attendees and provides significant training and educational opportunities for new collegiate officers and advisors.

Leaders

Every year, the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation awards scholarships to more than 30 collegiate members to continue their educations through graduate and professional study. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $2,500. These recipients demonstrate exceptional academic performance and leadership abilities.

MILAN BROOKS Stephen D. Bisese (University of Richmond) Scholarship University of Richmond Circle As an initiate of the Epsilon Circle at the University of Richmond, Milan Brooks was active as her circle’s vice president of membership, facilitating the application and selection process and assisting with induction ceremonies and service activities. On campus, she served as a teaching fellow for the Department of Psychology, peer mentor and tutor, and public relations chair for the pre-health fraternity and women in STEM sorority. Milan also led a service-learning trip to Louisiana, engaged in more than four years of psychology research, and was a member of four dance teams.

Growing up, Milan had an interest in people—what caused their unique behaviors and how they interacted with their environment. Through numerous courses in healthcare studies and servicelearning trips to West Virginia, Louisiana, the Dominican Republic, and Peru, she fostered an interest in the way that an individual’s environment largely determines their health and health outcomes.

She hopes to combine these interests in pursuit of a medical degree and expects to enroll in medical school in the fall of 2019, ultimately practicing family medicine in underserved communities.

NATALIE BROWN Foundation Scholarship Troy University Circle Troy University, Sorrell College of Business, M. Acc. Natalie Brown graduated summa cum laude with a degree in accounting from Troy University.

She also received a minor in dance and completed the University Honors Program. Natalie was greatly involved while pursuing her undergraduate degree as she was a member of the Student Government Association and other prestigious honor societies. She was also active in organizations across all branches of campus, holding leadership positions in many of them.

One of Natalie’s most significant accomplishments was leading as the president of the Troy University Circle. She loved serving the organization because it represented many of the qualities that she appreciates: scholarship, service, character, integrity, and fellowship.

Currently, Natalie is attending Troy University seeking a Master of Accountancy and a Certified Public Accounting licensure. She is continuing her education in accounting to ensure that she is academically prepared to guide individuals and companies in their attempts to understand financial needs and prepare for the future. Natalie views accounting as a way to give back to her community due to the uncertainties surrounding taxes and financial planning.

MELISSA CANCIO Foundation Scholarship Florida International University Circle Melissa Cancio, born and raised in Miami, Florida, prides herself on her own multi-cultural background coming from her Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Lebanese heritage. She graduated from Immaculata La Salle High School, having completed nearly 1,000 community service hours, while also managing to start her own project - the collection and delivering of long sleeved t-shirts, socks and Bibles to migrant workers.

Alongside her acceptance to Florida International University, Melissa saw a continued opportunity to influence others. With ambition and humility instilled in her, Melissa joined multiple organizations including Roarthon and Omicron Delta Kappa which she thanks for making a large impact in her personal growth and professional career. Melissa graduated in December 2018 with a degree in communication. As an undergraduate student, Melissa was able to balance internships, a job, and school work with strong determination and the continuous support of her family. Her goal is to continue her education in pursuing a graduate degree with hopes of possibly starting her own non-profit organization.

STEPHANIE CLARK Diane and Tom Vukovich Scholarship Muskingum University Circle University of Toledo, College of Medicine and Life Sciences, M.D. Stephanie Clark graduated summa cum laude from Muskingum University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics. As co-president of the O∆K circle, she helped organize events such as activities for Parents’ Weekend and a leaf-raking fundraiser benefiting a local food pantry. During her time as an undergraduate, Stephanie was also involved as a student mentor, a chemistry and math tutor, the president of Pre-Health Club, and a co-captain of the women’s basketball team. Stephanie was recognized as a Distinguished Scholar for three years, and she was awarded a Hodges Grant to fund her research on the synthesis of a calcium ion chemosensor with improved fluorescent properties.

“As a result of growing up with three younger siblings and participating in athletics since I was five years old, a competitive drive has been instilled in my character. I will never cease challenging myself to be a better person every day. This applies to my roles as a student, an athlete, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and an aspiring physician.”

Through her experiences of shadowing a family physician and volunteering at a children’s hospital, Stephanie developed a passion for medicine. She is currently pursuing her M.D. degree with support from the Diane and Tom Vukovich Scholarship.

BRANDON COOK Foundation Scholarship University of Cincinnati Circle University of Cincinnati, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Ph.D. Brandon Cook witnessed his first live space launch at the age of nine, and since that moment he has been working toward achieving his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut. Brandon is determined to advance science and technology through the research and development of autonomous systems.

Brandon is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Cincinnati studying aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics with a concentration in dynamics/controls and intelligent systems.

His research focuses on developing methods for safely integrating small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, into the national airspace. Brandon has been a Pathways Intern with NASA Ames Research Center since 2015. Previously, Brandon was equally active in his role as vice president of the Alpha Theta Circle as well as a mentor and facilitator for Camp Bearcats, a camp for which he developed a curriculum that went along with its mission of developing freshman into leaders.

Thus far, Brandon’s doctoral work has resulted in five conference papers, one book chapter, and numerous awards.

Brandon is in the final year of his program and aspires to retain his perfect GPA throughout the remainder of his degree.

Upon graduation, Brandon will continue his work with NASA as a full-time research aerospace engineer.

Wesley Curles graduated from Auburn University in May 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences.

He maintained a 3.97 GPA and graduated as an Honors College Scholar. A member of Auburn’s NCAA Division I cross country and track and field teams, Wesley led the team as captain his junior and senior years. Wesley served as a team representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and was a leader in Auburn’s Connect Program, which aids freshman athletes in their transition to college.

While at Auburn, Wesley completed undergraduate research in the Department of Nutrition under Dr. Ramesh Jeganathan, examining the link between Alzheimer’s disease and type 2 diabetes. He also performed research in the Department of Kinesiology, assisting Dr. Michael Roberts in studying the effects of protein supplementation on long-distance runners.

For two years, Wesley volunteered with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, and he was named to the SEC Brad Davis Community Service Team.

He is currently enrolled in medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and plans to become a pediatrician.

GAGE DAVIES Foundation Scholarship Pittsburg State University Circle University of Kansas, School of Medicine, M.D. When Gage Davies began his college career, he was unsure of the exact path his future would take. He did know, however, through multiple exposures to the world of healthcare that he wished to be a medical professional. Along with his role as president and secretary of the Pittsburg State University Circle, Gage became involved with numerous activities in college that only served to reinforce this dream. In addition to his academic work on campus, Gage reinvigorated a previously defunct partnership with a local free clinic that allowed undergraduate students a chance to learn more about vocations in the medical field, worked with the Pre-Medical Club as a secretary, and volunteered through multiple organizations to make a difference in his community. Gage also contributed to the Honors College by helping reform a mentoring program for incoming students to assist them in making the difficult transition to college.

Gage began studying at the University of Kansas in the fall, where he is pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree.

Emily Dunn graduated from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business in May 2018 with dual degrees in finance and risk management and insurance. As president of the Chi Circle, Emily coordinated programming with the most influential leaders on campus to challenge and inspire members of the circle. In doing so, she developed two new executive positions within her circle: treasurer and vice president of alumni relations.

Emily facilitated the honorary induction of esteemed women’s basketball coach, Dawn Staley, along with 28 new student inductees. As an undergraduate student, Emily shared hospitality with freshman students as a University101 Peer Leader and thousands of prospective students as a University Ambassador. She studied abroad in both London and New Zealand.

She consistently advocated for students on the Student Leader Advisory Board as well as the New Student Union Steering Committee. Emily also co-founded a women’s ministry group, Delight Ministries.

Emily began her first year in South Carolina’s Master of Health Administration program this fall. She is serving as a graduate assistant throughout the program and hopes to start a career in finance or administration in a hospital system upon graduation.

Foundation Scholarship University of North Georgia Circle University of North Georgia, College of Arts and Letters, M.S.

Leaders

As a first-generation college student, Brittaney Dyer graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Georgia in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice with a forensic concentration. She is currently an active member and will continue to serve as an officer in two of five honor societies: Omicron Delta Kappa (president), Phi Kappa Phi (vice president), Alpha Phi Sigma, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Golden Key. Being born and raised in the mountains of north Georgia, clean and sustainable water became important to her. Brittaney became a certified Georgia Adopt-a-Stream volunteer water quality monitor in 2015.

As president of the University of North Georgia Circle, she began collaborating on financing single-stream recycle bins to encourage recyclable waste collection on campus and reduce contaminated landfill run-off. Under Brittaney’s leadership, the UNG Circle placed 23 containers on campus in 2018.

This fall, Brittaney began a master’s degree in science with a major in criminal justice. Her ultimate goal is to obtain a doctorate and become a college professor to share her knowledge and love of learning with other students.

My enthusiastic thirst for knowledge shaped a self-disciplined determination in me to persevere through personal challenges, educational obstacles, and financial hardships to achieve my goal of a higher education.

TAYLOR EVANS Foundation Scholarship Hamline University Circle Taylor Evans graduated from Hamline University with a bachelor’s degree in public health and nonprofit management. During her time as an undergraduate student, she was secretary of her circle, a volunteer with Hamline’s Methodist Church, a member of the Sexual Violence Prevention Task Force, among other organizations focusing on youth empowerment and affordable housing and longterm homelessness. Taylor conducted research with the Minnesota Department of Health where she developed a toolkit based on the data she collected.

In her free time, Taylor enjoys studying and training in martial arts, especially Thai Boxing and Jeet Kune Do. In September, Taylor moved Oregon to participate in the AmeriCorps RARE program, working as the Community Development Coordinator for the City of Monroe. Taylor’s hope for the program is to find what area of fundraising and development she is interested in and use that as a focus for when she enrolls in the nonprofit management graduate program at the University of Oregon the next fall.

ASHA FULLER Winton M. Blount Scholarship University of Alabama Circle Arizona State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, M.A. An initiate of the University of Alabama Circle, Asha Fuller wrote, “I became keenly more aware of the mental health of my peers after my friend’s suicide in high school. This experience led to my interest in psychology, specifically to work with children and adolescents.”

My interest in medicine began at the age of ten, when I experienced the death of my father shortly after moving to South Carolina. A heart attack struck him and ended his life before emergency services could arrive. Confronting this loss influenced me to reflect at an important time in my youth. I realized that I want to dedicate myself to service.

As an undergraduate student, Asha volunteered twice a week and helped lead service groups as an assistant team leader at UA’s Center for Service and Leadership. She also served as treasurer for her O∆K circle, as an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences, and as director of philanthropy and service for the Greek Programming Board. Asha participated as a member of various honor societies and served as a research assistant in a psychology lab.

GEORGE DILLON GRAHAM

Asha is attending Arizona State University and pursuing a master’s degree in behavioral analysis. Her ultimate aspiration is to obtain a doctorate in psychology to help reform the mental health care system, especially for individuals of lower socioeconomic status and those in the justice system.

MAIA GORDON Foundation Scholarship University of Redlands Circle University of Notre Dame, Mendoza College of Business, M.S. Maia Gordon graduated from the University of Redlands in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology and Bachelor of Music with a major in violin performance. As president of the University of Redlands Circle, Maia worked to make O∆K more involved on campus.

She also served as vice president for membership of Sigma Alpha Iota, director of the women’s a capella group: Redlands Rhapsodies, Finals Basket Committee Chair for Mortar Board, and as a member of Psi Chi, Phi Beta Kappa, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

Maia’s passion for leadership led her to pursue a Master of Science with a major in management at the University of Notre Dame in hopes of learning about business ethics. After graduation, Maia plans to seek a career in the music industry where she can combine her knowledge of music and business ethics to make a meaningful impact for performers in this field.

Born in Bluefield, West Virginia, Dillon Graham moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in 2006.

Dillon became interested in the military at a young age and decided to attend The Citadel: The Military College of South Carolina to pursue a degree in biology. While serving as the Regimental Commander, the highest ranking cadet in the Corps of Cadets, Dillon helped charter the college’s Omicron Delta Kappa circle. For the inaugural service project, O∆K members planned and organized a Leadership and Ethics Conference for local high school students to learn about leadership in the midst of moral and ethical dilemmas. He was also a commander of the Junior Sword Arc, as well as a member of the Citadel Summerall Guards.

Dillon commissioned in the U.S. Air Force after graduation and is attending the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville to pursue a medical degree. He aims to become an orthopedic surgeon upon completion of his training.

RICHARD HOLLENBACH Foundation Scholarship University of Pittsburgh Circle Duke University, Pratt School of Engineering, MEng Richard Hollenbach graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a major in mechanical engineering. With stellar grades, he graduated summa cum laude with honors distinction and even pursued a certificate in applied engineering simulation as well as minors in mathematics and German. In addition to serving as vice president of the Pittsburgh Circle, Richard was also president of the Engineering Honor Society, a member of the Student Government Board, a resident assistant in the first-year Engineering Living Learning Community, and a brother in a social fraternity.

Richard’s heavy involvement in research both at Pittsburgh and Texas A&M, coupled with an insightful internship with the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, pushed him to apply to graduate school. In August, Richard began attending Duke University to pursue a master’s degree, and eventually a doctorate, in mechanical engineering with a focus on aerodynamics. His interests outside of engineering include traveling and martial arts. He studied abroad three times while at Pittsburgh: traveling to China, Peru, and Scandinavia. In 2015, Richard successfully earned his fourth-degree black belt in Taekwon-Do, while just this past March 2018, he secured a spot on the United States’ Team for the World Taekwon-Do Championships held in August 2018.

NICOLE JOHNSON John Karlem Reiss Scholarship Louisiana College Circle Louisiana College, School of Human Behavior, M.S.W. Nicole Johnson graduated from Louisiana College in 2018 with a major in social work and a minor in psychology. Aside from her involvement with O∆K, Nicole also belonged to organizations such as Psi Chi, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and Psi Alpha where she served as vice president. Through her other positions as a presenter for the National Association of Christian Social Workers conference, a volunteer with the Homeless Street Count in Pineville, Louisiana, and a member of the church choir, Nicole has demonstrated that faith is integral to her education.

Nicole is pursuing a Master of Social Work so that she can be an influence on her community in a positive way. Nicole has a heart for children who are facing struggles or come from broken homes and wants to make a difference in this population once completing her degree.

CARLY KOZA Chellgren Family Endowed Scholarship Duquesne University Circle Case Western Reserve University, School of Law, J.D. Carly Koza is an initiate of the Duquesne University Circle.

In 2017, she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology and a Bachelor of Music with a major in voice performance. Carly represented Omicron Delta Kappa as one of five female representatives on the 2016 Homecoming Court at Duquesne. In 2018, she graduated with a Master of Music with a voice performance from Duquesne.

In the future, Carly also plans to use her music degrees to teach, sing in the church, and bring music into the lives of those with neurodegenerative diseases. In 2016, Carly began promoting her platform titled “Never Forgetting Those Who Forget,” which focuses on those living with Alzheimer’s disease along with their caregivers.

In law school, Carly continues participating in community service activities, taking on leadership roles, and acting as a mentor, while striving to excel academically. Carly began law school this fall at Case Western Reserve University with a focus on health law and public policy.

Dahlia Kronfli, a 2017 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, received a Bachelor of Science with majors in physiology and neurobiology and a minor in Spanish language and culture.

Throughout her undergraduate experiences in shadowing physicians, mentoring students, and volunteering in Washington D.C., Dahlia enjoyed the humanistic aspect of getting to know each person. From organizations such as Terrapin Beats Society to her involvement as advertising director of the American Medical Students Association, her dedication never wavered.

During Dahlia’s year away from academia, she became the chief medical scribe in the Emergency Department of her hometown community hospital, further developing her love of clinical medicine and getting firsthand experience of the demands of leadership in the workplace. Through all of these interactions, she knew that she wanted a career in which she could not only pursue science and develop relationships but also apply those understandings to offer personal, comprehensive medical care.

In August, Dahlia started her M.D. degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Her goal is to become a physician who embraces clinical care with consideration of a patient’s social, economic, and mental concerns.

During her undergraduate career at Rider University, Ashley Leeds was an active executive board member in the Leadership Development Program, and she is currently serving at the Mental Health Caucus at Columbia University. In addition, she was vice president of Hillel at Rider. She served as the secretary of Alpha Lambda Delta, a first-year student honor society. Ashley was also the community ambassador for her school’s Odyssey Chapter, an online national writing platform for college students, as well as an ambassador for the university’s library.

Currently, Ashley is involved as the college liaison for the Arc of Mercer, a nonprofit organization that provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to interact with collegiate volunteers.

As an involved student and president of O∆K during several of her undergraduate years, Ashely understands that Omicron Delta Kappa provides community-oriented aspects. She will eternally hold onto her experiences of being in Omicron Delta Kappa through being awarded this scholarship, which serves as a crucial stepping stone to begin her next chapter of graduate education as a Columbia University School of Social Work Graduate School student.

ALI LANNOM Scott R. Goodale Memorial Endowed Scholarship Tennessee Technological University Circle Huntington University, Graduate Department of Occupational Therapy, O.T.D. Ali Lannom, former vice president of the Tennessee Tech Circle, graduated with a degree in exercise science and physical wellness: pre-occupational therapy in December 2017.

During her time at Tech, Ali was active on campus – promoting leadership, innovation, and community involvement. Ali served as the student coordinator of New Student and Family Programs, developer of a luer-lock medical chest tube device, and campus chairperson of Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinics where she organized statewide free medical care to underserved populations. These accomplishments led her to be recognized with the university’s highest honor – the 2018 Presidential Everett Derryberry Award.

Ali is enrolled in Huntington University’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. She is interested in specializing in hand therapy and hopes to become a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). She also has aspirations to start a non-profit to help educate developing countries on how to work with people with disabilities to increase their independence and quality of life.

Ali attributes her success in leadership and professional development to the values instilled in her through Omicron Delta Kappa.

CHARLOTTE MCFADDIN Foundation Scholarship Hillsdale College Circle University of Virginia, School of Law, J.D.

Leaders

In May, Charlotte McFaddin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in finance from Hillsdale College where she served as treasurer for O∆K. Literacy advocacy played an integral role in her collegiate career and represents an issue she hopes to continue supporting after earning her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia.

While in O∆K, Charlotte coordinated a literacy fundraiser benefiting the public high school in her college town.

Partnering with a local coffee shop, members of O∆K met with teachers and promoted an all-day coffee and literacy fundraiser. Outside of O∆K, Charlotte’s service as chapter president of her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, allowed Charlotte to lead her sisters in literacy advocacy. In 2017, her sorority surpassed previous years’ fundraising goals, partnered with other chapters to donate more than 25,000 books to community organizations in Detroit, and supported a public elementary school by reading with children.

After graduation from law school, whether through her career or pro-bono work, Charlotte hopes to continue advocating for education through community organizations or at the policy level.

Studying law, I hope to gain skills that will help me advocate education reform. Our public education system should better reflect our increasingly global economy, and I am confident we need to better prepare students for a technologically evolving cosmopolitan world.

MADISON NGUYEN Foundation Scholarship University of Richmond Circle Wake Forest University, School of Medicine, M.D. Madison Nguyen served as president of the Epsilon Circle at the University of Richmond and graduated in May 2018, receiving a Bachelor of Science with majors in biochemistry and molecular biology and a minor in healthcare studies. During her time as circle president, Madison sought to improve the transparency and equity of the member selection process.

At Richmond, Madison also acted as the vice president of member development for her sorority, volunteered with Church Hill Activities and Tutoring as well as RVA Reads, served on the University’s Honor Council, worked as a writing consultant, wrote and edited articles for the campus healthcare magazine “Osmosis,” and performed and presented biochemistry research on the mutagenic effect of various enzymes during genetic replication.

Madison began her Doctor of Medicine studies at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in July 2018. She is looking forward to blending her knowledge of the natural sciences, healthcare, and medicine and is particularly interested in performing translational research that she can explain in depth to her future patients.

CODY SAIN Foundation Scholarship University of Tennessee-Knoxville Circle University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, M.D. Cody Sain graduated from the University of Tennessee– Knoxville in 2018 with a major in microbiology and a minor in Africana studies. Admitted to the university’s Haslam Scholars Program, Cody focused on service-learning, community leadership, the pursuit of knowledge through research, and civic engagement during his undergraduate career. He worked across campus to support students as a resident assistant, a tutor through the Student Success Center, and as the Honors and Scholars Programs Chair on the Provost Student Advisory Council. In the community, Cody volunteered at local University-Assisted Community Schools through the Clinic VOLS program teaching science experiments during Science Saturday and developing and organizing local community school public health fairs.

Cody served his circle as president, and he established the formation of the Honors and Scholars Multicultural Inclusion Council to support and retain minority and diverse students. For his undergraduate research, Cody worked in a microbiology and virology lab where he studied the involvement of neutrophils in cytomegalovirus dissemination and pathogenesis. In the fall of 2018, Cody began pursuing his M.D. at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in aspirations of becoming an anesthesiologist or entering the field of palliative medicine.

ANDREA SAJEWSKI Foundation Scholarship Duquesne University Circle Andrea Sajewski was a biomedical engineering and mathematics major and secretary of her circle at Duquesne University. She has been involved in image processing research at Duquesne, applying mathematical theory to medical image data. In the summers, she has been an MRI research assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and an engineering intern for GE Healthcare, designing and testing MRI surface coils.

As a member of O∆K, Andrea helped plan Professor Appreciation Day, Senior Celebration, and a campus-wide fundraising event for the Women’s Shelter of Pittsburgh. She was also president of her section of the Society of Women Engineers, a member of Flute Choir, and an active participant in Start-PLAY Hackers, a campus group of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and biomedical engineering students who modify electronic toys for children with disabilities. As part of Start-PLAY Hackers, she organized a Build-a-Thon, a soldering workshop for freshmen engineering majors, and several fundraisers.

MICHAEL SCHULTE Foundation Scholarship Creighton University Circle Creighton University, School of Medicine, M.D. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Michael Schulte graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science in 2017. He was inducted into the Creighton University Circle in 2015 where he served as co-president his junior year and as president during his senior year. Through these positions, O∆K taught him a great deal about leadership and gave him the opportunity to work with others as a member of a team to plan programs and lead an organization. Michael remembers the many lessons he’s learned about organization, communication, and perseverance while organizing a Christmas gift drive for a struggling family.

His other involvements included serving as a public relations officer for the athletics pep band, a tutor for the local Boys and Girls Club, and a mentor for at-risk middle school aged youth through a community outreach organization.

He is currently a second-year medical student at Creighton University School of Medicine. His passion for medicine lies in working with others to improve their health while being a source of support and understanding. Michael’s interest lies in the field of family medicine because he believes holistic, long-term doctor-patient relationships and preventative medicine provide the greatest promise of healthy, fulfilling lives for patients.

Foundation Scholarship University of Nebraska – Lincoln Circle University of Chicago Law School, J.D.

Leaders

This fall, Camille Sippel began attending the University of Chicago Law School. Her long-term goal is to own and operate her own law firm that will accommodate work in entrepreneurial justice, aiding low-income and disadvantaged populations in building successful businesses.

As an undergraduate student, Camille served as the University of Nebraska’s student body internal vice president and was able to design and implement projects for students by students. Some examples include adding emergency contact numbers on the back of student ID cards and proposing and gaining university approval for a more comprehensive University Attendance Policy to cover absences for issues related to mental health and medical conditions related to pregnancy. She was also able to serve as the circle’s vice president of recruitment and designed a more accessible online application which increased the applicant pool by 20 percent. As an elected senate member within student government, she served on the committee for diversity and inclusion and was a member of the UNL Disability Club, a mentor, a Board of Director’s intern, and a service leader for several local nonprofit organizations.

ANDREW SMYTHE Foundation Scholarship Stockton University Circle Stockton University, School of Health Sciences, DPT Andrew Smythe graduated from Stockton University in May 2018 with dual degrees in biology and philosophy. During his time as an undergraduate student, he served as the president of the Stockton University Circle and planned various service and entertainment events with the circle. He also served as the president of an environmental group called Water Watch, the secretary of Stockton Entertainment Team (SET), and a committee member of the Relay for Life committee.

In September 2018, Andrew returned to Stockton University to pursue his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). As a physical therapist, he intends on providing treatment and motivation to individuals who endured physical injuries and lost motivation needed for their lifestyles. Andrew noted “patients would receive treatment and learn routines that would help the healing process and empower them to take care of themselves after they receive treatment. Providing the empowerment to patients is the greatest accomplishment and joy as a physical therapist.”

DILLON STAUB Diane and Tom Vukovich Scholarship University of Cincinnati Circle University of Cincinnati, Carl H. Lindner College of Business and Electrical Engineering, M.S. Dillon graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science with a major in electrical engineering. As an undergraduate student, he served as membership chair and co-president of the Alpha Theta Circle and contributed to several other student organizations including Student Activities Board, Engineers Without Borders, ROAR Campus Tour Guides, and Engineering Diplomats. Other involvements include Emerging Campus Leaders, CEAS Ambassadors, and his most current position as a peer mentor through Cincinnati’s joint co-op institute. Dillon’s interests in neuromorphic computing and nanotechnology led him to research emerging device architectures, and his desire to connect business disciplines with engineering led him to pursue a minor in finance.

With the assistance of O∆K’s Diane and Tom Vukovich Scholarship, Dillon is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. His research is in electrical engineering centers on hardware security and the development of trusted and secure systems. Following completion of his degree, Dillon hopes to work with startup companies in the Atlanta metro area.

CYNTHIA SURYAWAN Foundation Scholarship Salem College Circle University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, M.S. Born with a cleft lip and palate, Cynthia Suryawan grew up having significant interactions with medical professionals as well as speech therapists. Having attended a small high school and then a small, liberal arts college, Cynthia recognized how intersectional identities have impacted her life.

Cynthia has always been passionate about change and having her voice heard. During her undergraduate years, she took charge in several leadership roles.

Given a platform on the Student Government Association, she was able to engage her peers as well as her superiors to help create tangible change. These roles have enabled Cynthia to embody scholarship, service, integrity, character, and fellowship.

Cynthia’s experiences have also impacted her academic and occupational goals. Cynthia will be earning a Master of Science with a major in statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her ultimate goal is to become a biostatistician so that she can make a difference in the medical field. She would like to address the discrepancies that are present in the medical industry particularly those regarding racial, sexual, and gender minorities.

An initiate of the Washington and Lee University Circle, Zachary Taylor graduated in May 2017 as valedictorian of his class. In addition to serving as an honor code advisor with the Student Government Association and editorin-chief of the Mudd Journal of Ethics, Zachary also tutored undergraduate students in Latin, hosted a weekly radio show, and worked tirelessly with the Alpha Circle in support of its diversity initiatives both on campus and in the local Lexington community.

For the past year, Zachary taught Latin and coached soccer and basketball at a private school in Delaware.

Zachary also assisted in the American Excavations at Morgantina: Contrada Agnese Project in Sicily.

He is currently attending Trinity College at the University of Cambridge in pursuit of a Master of Philosophy in theology, religion, and the philosophy of religion. Zachary’s studies will address questions about God and the nature of God-talk, the way in which philosophers approach the study of religion and ontology, and how religious thinkers from various traditions confront problems concerning divinity and religious language. Ultimately, having grasped the most fundamental concepts in the philosophy of religion at Cambridge, Zach plans to complete a Ph.D. in religious ethics with the intention of teaching as a university professor.

SARAH REAGAN TEPOOL Katharine Cater (Auburn University) Scholarship Auburn University Circle University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Health Professions, M.S. A May 2018 graduate of Auburn University, Sarah Reagan Tepool served as president of the Omega Circle, and through her position, she was the Miss Homecoming Director. Sarah Reagan is also a member of Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi. Sarah Reagan started the physician assistant program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham this fall. Upon completing her physician assistant studies, Sarah Reagan will be capable of working in many different medical fields. Currently, she is interested in either dermatology or orthopedics as future focuses. Ultimately, Sarah Reagan’s goal is to build relationships with patients and get to know more than just their medical conditions. She hopes to bring hope to patients through healing.

An initiate of the University of Maryland, College Park’s Sigma Circle, Jacob Veitch graduated in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Science with a major in international business and a Bachelor of Arts with a major in government and politics. He served as the Sigma Circle’s co-director of events from January to May 2017 before serving as circle president for one year. Jacob’s other involvements include being a member of the Maryland Federation of College Republicans where he served as state chairman.

Jacob also led the Student Government Association as president, where he revised SGA election procedures. Jacob was also on the advisory committees for the Office of the Provost and the Department of Information Technology.

Currently, Jacob serves as a business technology analyst in Deloitte Consulting’s Government and Public Services practice. In this role, he provides thoughtful analysis of federal programming and constructive solutions to address some of the country’s greatest national security challenges.

Jacob accepted this role after previously interning at Deloitte, the Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Congress.

Jacob is planning to attend law school, and he intends to enroll no later than 2021. He hopes to leverage the law school experience to do what he has always done – serve others.

HANNAH WEBER John D. Morgan Scholarship Transylvania University Circle In May 2018, Hannah Weber graduated from Transylvania University summa cum laude with majors in neuroscience and educational studies. As president of the Lampas Circle, Hannah coordinated many events ranging from initiation to the National Day of Service project. She was an integral member of the residence life program on campus, serving as both a resident advisor and an area coordinator for first-year students. In the Lexington community, Hannah was very involved in the Living Arts and Science Center. At the center, she worked in curriculum development and as a teacher for the after-school Science Explorers program. This program strives to empower students attending lowincome schools in STEM fields. Additionally, Hannah attended the Yale Sherwin B. Nuland Summer Institute on Bioethics and received a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates grant to study the molecular evolution of memory circuitry in octopuses through the University of Florida’s Whitney Laboratory.

In January 2019, Hannah will begin a year-long Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Malaysia. Upon returning, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. in cognitive science with an emphasis on how learning occurs in the developing brain, ultimately synthesizing these findings with research in education to inform improved instructional practices.

ASHLEY WERNER Foundation Scholarship University of Mary Circle University of Mary, School of Health Sciences, M.S. At the young age of 16, Ashley Werner had the chance to attend a medical career camp where she shadowed a speech-language pathologist (SLP). After witnessing the impact of the SLP on families and patients, Ashley knew that she had found her purpose to serve individuals with communication needs.

As an undergraduate student, Ashley served as the O∆K circle president. In this role, Ashley assisted the newly chartered circle to establish strong circle practices by effectively running meetings, organizing new service projects, and encouraging additional leadership activities. In addition, Ashley served as North Dakota’s state student officer and campus vice president for the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association.

In the fall, Ashley began a Master of Science with a major in speech-language pathology at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. She said, “I am excited to continue developing ample skills and professional traits needed to reach my career goal, to serve as an SLP in rural North Dakota where there is a significant need for speech-language pathologists.”

The Laurel Crowned Circle Award is considered to be the highest individual honor awarded

by Omicron Delta Kappa and is given by a vote of the Society Board of Directors.

Recipients demonstrate the highest ideals of the Society including scholarship, service, integrity, character, and fellowship. Susan Komives (Denison University, 1978) professor emerita in the Student Affairs Program at the University of Maryland, College Park, is the 2018 recipient of this award. She is a past president of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). She served as vice president of two colleges and is the author of a dozen books or monographs including Student Services, Exploring Leadership, Leadership for A Better World, Facilitating the Social Change Model, Handbook for Student Leadership Development, Management and Leadership Issues for a New Century, and Cross Border Enhancement for Student Learning and Development.

John “Jack” D. Morgan

Award for Lifetime Service The John “Jack” D. Morgan Award for Lifetime Service is given to honor a member of the Society who has rendered outstanding and sustained service to Omicron Delta Kappa throughout their life to promote the highest interests of O∆K. The award was first presented at the 2018 convention to Jack Morgan (Maryville University, 1986) at a dinner celebrating his contributions and lifetime service to O∆K.

Bishop Outstanding Circle Officer Award The National Awards Committee selects this honoree each year based on nominations received from circles recognizing those individuals who have served for an extended time as either a circle coordinator or faculty advisor. Brooke Lecky Supple (University of Maryland, College Park, 2001) is the 2018 recipient of this award.

Her nominator wrote, “As the Circle Coordinator, Dr. Supple helps connect the Sigma Circle with the administration and our alumni.

In addition to that, she supports our students’ leadership development and counsels them on how to improve as leaders within O∆K and in the broader university community. She is committed to ensuring that O∆K remains the premier leadership honor society on campus.”

Betsy Bugg Holloway

Cheryl M. Hogle Distinguished Service Award This award is named for Cheryl Hogle, a longtime circle advisor at SUNY Plattsburgh and the first woman to serve as O∆K’s national president. The 2018 recipient was the second woman to serve as national president. Betsy Bugg Holloway (Vanderbilt University, 1991), a long-time advisor for the Samford University Circle, was the Society’s leader from 2010-12. In addition to serving as a member of the Society Board of Directors for several years, she also served as a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees including a term as vice president of the Foundation.

Pillars of Leadership Awards The Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation established the Pillars of Leadership Awards to recognize post-collegiate members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in one of the five phases of campus life celebrated by O∆K.

Susan and Tom Lowder (Auburn University, 1971) are both successful professionals whose interests range from real estate to wine. They are devoted to finding cures for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s, the illnesses that took the lives of their first spouses. Their philanthropy also supports faith-based organizations and education including Tom’s alma mater, Auburn University. journalism

During his career, Senator Lamar Alexander (Vanderbilt University, 1961) has admirably served the State of Tennessee and the nation.

He has been the Governor of Tennessee and Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. Since 2003, Senator Alexander has represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate where he is the current chair of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

Janis Hirsch

Arts

Janis Hirsch (Rollins College, 2013) is a prolific writer and producer. She has written for or produced television programs including Frasier, Murphy Brown, and Will & Grace. Janis was nominated for an Emmy in 1999 for her work as a producer on Frasier. She was also one of the first women to work at The National Lampoon and was interviewed in the 2015 Netflix documentary about the magazine and its various projects.

Monica Pearson

Communications As a noted journalist and community leader, Monica Pearson (Emory University, 1995) has had a career in broadcasting that has stretched across decades. A graduate of both the University of Louisville and the University of Georgia, Monica’s career has included print as well as broadcast media. She advocates on behalf of several concerns including those focused on women’s health in the greater Atlanta area.

Dawn Staley Athletics

Coach Dawn Staley (University of South Carolina – Columbia, 2017) earned her undergraduate degree and played basketball at the University of Virginia. She represented the United States in three Olympics winning a gold medal in 1996, and she played professionally in the WBNA. Currently, she is the head coach of the University of South Carolina Women’s Basketball Team. In 2017, the Lady Gamecocks won the NCAA Division I Championship under Coach Staley.

Eldridge W. Roark Jr. Meritorious Service Award David Ellington (Washington and Lee University, 2008) has been an active member of the Scholarship Review and Selection Committee.

He has also been involved with the Virginia Military Institute’s circle by serving as the guest speaker at a recent initiation ceremony.

Wandalyn Fanchon “Chon” Glover (The College of William and Mary, 2001) served the Society as the chair of the National Advisory Council in addition to providing leadership as an advisor for the William and Mary Circle. Chon also served as a member of the Society Board of Directors and was instrumental in the development of the orientation program for new directors.

Diane Vukovich (University of Akron, 1998) has been a devoted member of the Scholarship Review and Selection Committee. Along with her husband Tom Vukovich (University of Akron, 1997), Diane has been involved in the creation of several significant O∆K scholarships and grant funds.

Rexford Waters (Elon University, 1998), who long served as the faculty advisor of the Elon University Circle, is one of the 2018 recipients of this award. Rex is crediting with establishing a higher profile for the circle at Elon and developing an innovative membership selection process.

The National Awards Committee takes into account three distinct characteristics when reviewing applications: furthering circle engagement within the campus community, enhancing current programming, and developing new initiatives to increase publicity.

Growing Our PEAYple is an educational leadership experience where first and second-year students have the opportunity to develop their leadership potential. The Austin Peay State University Circle recognizes that many underclassmen seek leadership experiences but lack critical opportunities to grow the skills necessary to lead. This program allows students to engage in a dinner dialogue with key community leaders including, Dr. Alisa White, APSU president, Dr. Gregory Singleton, associate vice president and dean of students, and another community leader.

The program provides an opportunity to grow and learn together with O∆K leaders who impact our community.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

The Virginia Tech Circle held its first diversity and inclusion discussion on February 9, 2018. The purpose of the discussion was to get students to have an open conversation about diversity and inclusion and experiences they have faced on the Virginia Tech campus. Participants discussed topics such as the personal meaning of diversity and inclusion, unconscious bias, and any barriers on campus that limit students’ ability to recognize diversity.

Students in attendance represented many campus organizations including O∆K, Alpha Sigma Phi, Theta Nu Xi, Phi Sigma Kappa, SAA, and the Corps of Cadets.

On Tuesday, February 27, 2018, the Georgia College Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa convened a community leadership summit. The circle brought together nearly 50 community members and Georgia College faculty, staff, and students for a day-long discussion of leadership and leadership development within the university and community.

The Wagner College Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Summit featured two-time TED speaker Elisabeth Cardiello. The program included keynote speakers who focused their presentations on their personal journeys and how the attendees might be able to learn from their experiences. After the keynote speeches, group activities included discussions about the participants’ leadership journeys with an emphasis on personal understanding and aligning vision with values.

To be eligible for any award, a circle must have:

• Provided membership processing documents (certificate

The secret to getting ahead is getting started A message from the Foundation President Mark Twain, a master of wit and wisdom, has a way of saying so much in so few words. Here’s a favorite quote: The secret to getting ahead is getting started.

As the president of the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation, part of my “job” is getting things started, lighting fires, encouraging participation . . . mostly having to do with the “giving” side of things. So, here I go . . .

First, let me tell you about our 2018 successes: • We held a wonderfully fulfilling convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

• We had an excellent fundraising year.

• We awarded 33 scholarships to worthy candidates (five more than last year).

• We committed to hosting a leadership convention annually, starting in 2020.

Now, let me tell you what O∆K needs: • More participation and involvement from current members and alumni. Would you consider signing up to volunteer or even serving on the Board of Trustees?

• Additional collegiate initiates in existing circles, representing all phases of campus life while welcoming faculty, staff, and alumni members.

We need to continue to increase membership and establish new circles.

• Monetary investments to expand our programs and scholarships. As a member of the scholarship committee for several years, I cannot begin to tell you how significant these dollars are to our outstanding collegiate members.

Just a few years ago, I got “started” and involved in O∆K. I’ve met wonderful, insightful, and interesting people I would never have met in my current circles of life. I have become focused on something important, something that lifts students and makes them more involved in leading the way for others in their colleges and communities.

How can I encourage you to get started? It’s really no secret. Think about the way you felt when you were initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa. Pride? Honor?

Confidence? Wasn’t it amazing, being recognized for your work, your time, your efforts?

So come on, I urge you to “get started.” Help O∆K support our leadership vision. Remember all of those people that supported you along the way? Now, be one of those people.

Celebrating Leaders in Our Lives A message from the Executive Director Dear member, In the previous pages, there is a listing of those individuals who made gifts in honor or memory of special individuals in their lives. There are gifts honoring longtime circle advisors, favorite professors, close friends and family, and other loved ones who have been important to our members. Any gift to the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation may be designated as a tribute gift, and when contact information is available, our headquarters sends a letter informing the honoree or that individual’s family of the donation.

This issue of The Circle has significantly more pages than normal. The extra pages provide the opportunity to include more photographs. On page 25, there is a collection of photos from the 2018 Biennial National Convention and Leadership Conference. Our collegiate members remain an inspiration to their fellow students and circle advisors, our national volunteers, and the headquarters staff. I often remark that I have great hope for our society because of the talent, competence, and compassion of our student members.

On the page to the right, we are introducing a new photo feature: Then and Now. The 1949 convention, held in Atlanta, had a fairly homogenous population of attendees. The 2018 photograph well-represents the sociological diversity in our modern collegiate membership. What the photo doesn’t reveal is the

diversity of the activities in which our students serve as leaders. Our collegiate members are involved in everything from campus government to sustainability programs to intercollegiate athletics. They are also active participants in university orchestras and gospel choirs. They support youth literacy initiatives, conduct biomedical research, work in residence life, and host campus radio shows.

If you have a personal connection with one of our current student members or recently graduated initiates, I invite you to consider making a gift in honor of their service. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate their accomplishments and acknowledge the importance of leadership.

Thank you, once again, for all that you do for Omicron Delta Kappa. I truly appreciate your continuing devotion to the Society and your support of outstanding student leaders.

Then& Now

The 1949 Omicron Delta Kappa National Convention was held in Atlanta, Georgia.

It was the Society’s 16th national gathering. At the time, there were only 65 circles.

The 2018 O∆K Biennial National Convention and Leadership Conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee, was the 50th such meeting. It will be the last “biennial” convention for the Society. In 2020, Omicron Delta Kappa will start holding national meetings on an annual basis. The collegiate members wore the convention service t-shirt as they prepared care kits for service men and women through the Circles for Soldiers program.

At the time of the 2018 convention, there were 304 active circles on campuses across the United States.
